Description / Table of Contents: Was heißt Globalisierung »wirklich«?

Abstract: Social relations in our globalising world are increasingly stretched out across the borders of two or more nation-states. Yet, despite the growing academic interest in transnational economic networks, political movements and cultural forms, too little attention has been paid to the transformations of space that these processes both reflect and reproduce. Transnational Spaces takes a innovative perspective, looking at transnationalism as a social space that can be occupied by a wide range of actors, not all of whom are themselves directly connected to transnational migrant communities.

Abstract: Growing Up Global examines global change through children's lives in two seemingly disparate places: New York City and Sudan. The book's core is a study of children in a Sudanese village that was included in a state-sponsored agricultural program. Abstract: There is currently a popular view that the world is undergoing profound changes in the fundamental relationships upon which it is organised. In particular, there is widespread talk of a 'globalised' economy, facilitated by and associated with 'new' technologies and practices. There is a further consensus that within this 'globalised', 'new' economy, regionalisation in some form is important. The aim of this volume is to address these topical issues, presenting perspectives from which they can be analysed and exploring specific aspects in greater detail. The contributors provide a framework for understanding current trends, and suggest approaches that highlight appropriate ways forward in the context of both opportunities and dangers. In doing so, they discuss specific cases and explore detailed policy possibilities, including the prospect of stimulating change through multinational engagement and debate
Abstract: 1. Economic 'prosperity' and 'globalisation' : an agenda and perspective -- 2. The problem of regional 'hollowing out' in Japan : lessons for regional industrial policy -- 3. Regional prosperity in a globalised economy : evidence from Mexico -- 4. Economic activity, market structure and public policy -- 5. Notes on labour market flexibility : questions for the new economy -- 6. Antitrust issues : global cartels, competition law and the new economy -- 7. Economic gains from regional concentration of business operations -- 8. Why do biotechnology firms cluster? : some possible explanations -- 9. Industrial clusters and districts in the new economy : some perspectives and cases -- 10. The global economy and manufacturing : the case of Wisconsin -- 11. Reflections on a university's role in regional economic development -- 12. International perspectives on the prosperity of a region : a personal reflection

Abstract: This analysis explores the social history and politics of mega-events from the late 19th century to the present. Through case studies of events such as the 1851 Crystal Palace Expo, the 1936 Berlin Olympics and the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, Maurice Roche investigates the impact Expos and Olympics have had on national identities, on the marking of public time and space, and on visions of national citizenship and international society in modern times. Historical chapters deal with the production of Expos by power elites, their impacts on mass culture, and the political uses and abuses of international sport and Olympic events. Chapters also deal with the impact of Olympics on cities, the growth of Olympics as media events and the current crisis of the Olympic movement in world politics and culture.

Abstract: Christian Berndt investigates how selected corporate actors in German small and medium-sized enterprises and in large companies respond to globalisation and the apparent crisis of the German model. By exploring the role of economic and non-economic factors in shaping business strategies he argues that, rather than simply being formal opposites, forces of dynamic change and irrational persistence are intertwined

Abstract: This book is about cities as engines of consumption of the world's environment, and the spread of policies to reduce their impact. It looks at these issues by examining the impact of the Rio Declaration and assesses the extent to which it has made a difference. Consuming Cities examines this impact using case studies from around the world including: the USA, Japan, Germany, the UK, China, India, Sweden, Poland, Australia and Indonesia The contributors all have direct experience of the urban environment and urban policies in the countries on which they write and offer an authoritative commentary which brings the urban 'consumption' dimension of sustainable development into focus.
