    Kurzfassung: Abstract: Der Beitrag beschäftigt sich mit dem Armutsrisiko von Frauen in der Schweiz im Kontext ihrer (un-)entgeltlichen Arbeitstätigkeiten. Dabei orientieren sich die Ausführungen an der These, wonach nicht die Arbeit, sondern die Arbeitsteilung das Armutsrisiko von Frauen erhöht. Diese Entwicklung wird anhand von fünf Faktoren und entsprechendem empirischen Datenmaterial für den Zeitraum von 1991 bis 2002 aufgezeigt: (1) die traditionelle Rollenverteilung in ihrer ganzen Breite, (2) die damit verbundene Erwerbsreduktion von Müttern, (3) Lohnungleichheit, (4) erhöhte Erwerbslosigkeit und Unterbeschäftigung unter Frauen sowie (5) das System sozialer Sicherung, das auf die Lohnhöhe ausgerichtet ist. Vor diesem Hintergrund plädieren die Autorinnen für eine Armutsbekämpfung in Form einer gleichberechtigten Teilnahme der Frauen am Berufsleben. (ICG2)

    Kurzfassung: Abstract: 'Wie zeitgenössische ethnologische und soziologische Studien gezeigt haben, hat sich das im Westen populäre Modell von Freundschaft als dyadischer, nicht-utilitaristischer, egalitärer und emotionsgeladener Sozialbeziehung als nicht-verallgemeinerbares Ideal erwiesen. Freundschaft bedarf einer kontextbezogenen Analyse, welche historische, regionale, kulturelle, soziale, wirtschaftliche und politische Bedingungen in Betracht zieht. Im vorliegenden Artikel wird Freundschaft im Rahmen interethnischer Beziehungen zwischen Mbororo (agro-pastorale Fulbe), Hausa und Mitgliedern der Kameruner Grasland-Gesellschaften untersucht. Der Fokus liegt dabei auf gender- und altersspezifischen Unterschieden in der Konzeption und der Ausgestaltung von Freundschaftsbeziehungen.     Kurzfassung: Since the 1970s, the literary and cultural politics of the turn-of-the-century New Woman have received increasing academic attention. Whether she is seen as the emblem of sexual anarchy, an agent of mediation between mass market and modernist cultures, or as a symptom of the consolidation of nineteenth and early twentieth-century political liberation movements, the New Woman represents a site of cultural and socio-political contestation and acts as a marker of modernity. This book explores the diversity of meanings ascribed to the New Woman in the context of cultural debates conducted within and across a wide range of national frameworks including the UK, Canada, North America, Europe, and Japan. The key concept of 'hybridities' is used to elucidate the national and ethnic multiplicity of the 'modern woman' as well as to locate this figure both within international consumer culture and within feminist writing. The book is structured around four key themes. 'Hybridities' examines the instabilities of New Woman identities and discourses in relation to both national/ethnic contexts and the textual parameters of New Woman writings. 'Through the (Periodical) Looking Glass' is concerned with the periodical press and its production and circulation of New Woman images. 'Feminist Counter Cultures?' interrogates feminist efforts to influence and shape this process by mimicking or subverting dominant models of representation and by establishing alternative spaces for the articulation of New Woman subjectivities. 'Race and the New Woman' inspects white New Women's investment in hegemonic racial discourses, looking at the way in which black and non-Western women inserted liberationist discourses into the New Woman debate. This book will be essential reading for advanced students and researchers of American Studies, Women's Studies, and Women's History.

    Kurzfassung: Religious conflicts had a pronounced effect on women and their families in early modern England, but our understanding of that impact is limited by the restrictions that prevented the open expression of religious beliefs in the post-Reformation years. More can be gleaned by shifting our focus to the New World, where gender relations and family formations were largely unhampered by the unsettling political and religious climate of England. In Maryland, English Arminian Catholics, Particular Baptists, Presbyterians, Puritans, Quakers, and Roman Catholics lived and worked together for most of the 17th century. By closely examining thousands of wills and other personal documents, as well as early Maryland's material culture, this transatlantic study depicts women's place in society and the ways religious values and social arrangements shaped their lives. Common Whores, Vertuous Women, and Loveing Wives takes a revisionist approach to the study of women and religion in colonial Maryland and adds considerably to our understanding of the social and cultural importance of religion in early America

    Kurzfassung: Women's Rights and Women's Lives In France 1944-1968 explores key aspects of the everyday lives of women between the Liberation of France and the events of May '68. At the end of the war, French women believed that a new era was beginning and that equality had been won. The redefined postwar public sphere required women's participation for the new democracy, and women's labour power for reconstruction, but equally important was the belief in women's role as mothers. Over the next two decades, the tensions between competing visions of women's `proper place' dominated discourses of womanhood as well as policy decisions, and had concrete implications for women's lives. Working from a wide range of sources, including women's magazines, prescriptive literature, documentation from political parties, government reports, parliamentary debates and personal memoirs, Claire Duchen follows the debates concerning womanhood, women's rights and women's lives through the 1944-1968 period and grounds them in the changing reality of postwar France.

    Kurzfassung: Abstract: Im Rahmen von kritischen Anmerkungen zu einem Beitrag von U. L. Fischer, C. Großer und S. Liebermann über den Einfluss der deutschen Wiedervereinigung auf die subjektiven erwerbsbezogenen Deutungsmuster Ostdeutscher (im gleichen Heft) wird eine Reihe von Einwänden gegen implizite Unterstellungen und zentrale Argumentationen vorgebracht. Fischer und Mitarbeiter können belegen, dass sich entgegen der modernisierungstheoretisch zu erwartenden Flexibilisierung der Subjekte empirisch die subkjektiven Deutungsmuster und Handlungsroutinen nicht verändert haben. Dass dies für erstaunlich gehalten wird, wird allerdings auf eine Reihe theoretischer Missverständnisse der Moderne und der Sozialisation sowie auf die Verkennung konstanter und weniger flexibilitätsfördernder Anforderungen im System von Erwerbsarbeit zurückgeführt. Die unterstellte Beharrlichkeit der Deutungsmuster eines exemplarischen Falls wird zudem in generalisierender Weise den zum Teil einseitig interpretierten realsozialist

    Kurzfassung: How did African women negotiate the complex political, economic, and social forces of colonialism in their daily lives? How did they make meaningful lives for themselves in a world that challenged fundamental notions of work, sexuality, marriage, motherhood, and family? By considering the lives of ordinary African women -- farmers, queen mothers, midwives, urban dwellers, migrants, and political leaders -- in the context of particular colonial conditions at specific places and times, Women in African Colonial Histories challenges the notion of a homogeneous "African women's experience." While recognizing the inherent violence and brutality of the colonial encounter, the essays in this lively volume show that African women were not simply the hapless victims of European political rule. Innovative use of primary sources, including life histories, oral narratives, court cases, newspapers, colonial archives, and physical evidence, attests that African women's experiences defy static representation. Readers at all levels will find this an important contribution to ongoing debates in African women's history and African colonial history.

    Kurzfassung: This study of women and gender in a Muslim society draws on archival and literary sources as well as the life stories of women of different generations to offer a unique ethnographic and historical account of the lives of urban women in contemporary Azerbaijan. Focussing on a group of professional women in Baku, it provides insight into the impact of the Soviet system on the position of Azeri women, their conceptions of femininity and the significant changes brought about by the post-Soviet transition to a market economy and growing western influence. Also explored are the ways in which local cultural expectations and Islamic beliefs were accommodated to different modernisation projects.

    Kurzfassung: Abstract: Die Autorin plädiert für einen biographischen Forschungsansatz, um den Einfluß der verschiedenen "Modernisierungsschübe" auf die individuelle Lebensgeschichte von Frauen zu eruieren. Aus einer historisch-vergleichenden Perspektive wird dabei kollektiven Lernprozessen von Frauen nachgegangen, die als Teil sozialen und kulturellen Wandels erforscht werden. Mit dem Konzept "Bildungsbiographien von Frauen" sind einige Implikationen verbunden. Das Konzept der Biographie meint mehr als die Abfolge von institutionalisierten und zertifizierten Bildungsprozessen bzw. -daten in der zeitlichen Ordnung des Lebenslaufs. Von diesen eher "curricularen Strukturen" muss die "Lebensgeschichte" unterschieden werden, zu der die übergreifenden biographischen Formationsprozesse von Sinn und Erfahrung gehören. Aus einer geschlechtertheoretischen Perspektive müssen solche Lernprozesse im Spannungsfeld von Tradierung und Transformation der kulturellen Geschlechterordnung verordnet werden. (ICA)

    Kurzfassung: Abstract: In psychoanalytischen Auseinandersetzungen mit dem 'Fremden' interessiert dieses in aller Regel in seiner Bedeutung, als auch in seinem Nutzen für das 'Eigene'. In seinem eigenen Recht wird dem, was das 'Fremde' genannt wird, meist keine Existenz gewährt. Solch eine Perspektive läuft Gefahr, das Machtverhältnis, welches dieser Situation zugrunde liegt, auszublenden und das 'Fremde' als gesetztes zu sehen anstatt nach der Geschichte der Bemächtigung zu fragen - danach, wie und wer jeweils zum Fremden, zum Anderen gemacht wird und warum. Abendländische Weiblichkeitskonstruktionen, in denen Frauen als das 'andere Geschlecht' zum Referenzpunkt des 'Eigenen' - dem männlichen Subjekt - gemacht werden, weisen seltsame Übereinstimmungen mit dem rassistisch konstruierten Fremden/Anderen als 'Außerhalb' der Grenzen des weißen, Eigenen auf.     Kurzfassung: Abstract: 'Der Beitrag behandelt Phänomene des 'doppelten Strukturwandels' der Frauenerwerbsarbeit im Sog des allgemeinen Wandels der Arbeitsgesellschaft. Gesellschaftliche Individualisierung, Erosion der männlichen Normalarbeitsbiographien und verstärkte weibliche Arbeitsmarktbeteiligung bei gleichzeitiger Verschärfung der Arbeitskontraktsegregation sind Kennzeichen dieser Re-Organisation bzw. Krise der Erwerbsarbeit. Die politischen Antworten auf diese Veränderungen variieren im europäischen Vergleich erheblich. In einigen Ländern wird das sog. duale Erwerbsmodell forciert, bei dem in sozial- und familienpolitischen Regelungen Frauen wie Männer als Erwerbstätige konzeptualisiert sind. In Österreich sind zwar hinsichtlich der Erwerbsbeteiligung und der Entwicklung der Arbeitsformen ähnliche Tendenzen festzustellen, alleine die politischen Forderungen deuten eine Verschiebung in der Kontextualisierung der Frauenerwerbsarbeit an: In familien- und sozialpolitischen Diskussionen dominieren Frau
