    Abstract: Environmental change in general, and climatic change in particular, are likely to impact significantly upon resources such as water and soils, transforming present day landscapes and their ecological characteristics. As a consequence, disruptions of socio-economic activities in sensitive regions of the globe can be expected in coming decades. Agriculture is at particular risk, especially in areas where prolonged droughts, sea level rise, enhanced natural hazards, or extreme meteorological events such as floods or mudslides threaten marginal existence. Disruptions and risks may have large effects on population migration. Conversely, large-scale movements of people, goods or capital may also disrupt local environments and further contribute to social problems. This volume provides an ample overview of state-of-the-art understanding of the multi-dimensional phenomenon of migration, in the characterisation of migration drivers, in environmental and agro-economic case studies and modelling issues as well as socio-political analyses

Daher mangelt es nicht an Gewaltphänomenen, die es genauer zu untersuchen gilt, als dies bislang geschehen ist. In diesem Band werden deswegen Gewalttaten aus neuen Perspektiven untersucht, neue Interpretationen ihrer Entstehung vorgestellt und neue Herausforderungen der sozialwissenschaftlichen Gewaltforschung debattiert. Folgende Fragen werden unter anderem in diesem gesellschaftspolitisch folgenreichen Buch behandelt: Kann der lange dominierende Begriff der physischen Gewalt überhaupt noch leitend sein, und muß die Gewaltanalyse sich nicht wieder stärker der strukturellen Gewalt zuwenden, da zunehmend eine »Gewalt ohne Gesicht« auftritt? Stecken die Ursachen im Gewalthandeln selbst, so daß Hinweise auf soziale Hintergründe etwa in die Irre führen? Verlieren sozialwissenschaftliche Forschungen aufgrund neuer biologischer Ansätze völlig an Relevanz? Biographische Informationen Wilhelm Heitmeyer, geboren 1945, war von 1996 bis 2013 Direktor des Instituts für interdisziplinäre Konflikt- und Gewaltforschung der Universität Bielefeld und arbeitet dort jetzt als Forschungsprofessor.     Abstract: Latin America is both the world's most urbanized fastest developing regions, where the links between social exclusion, inequality and violence are clearly visible. The banal, ubiquitous nature of drug crime, robbery, gang and intra-family violence destabilizes countries' economies and harms their people and social structures. Encounters with Violence & Crime in Latin America explores the meaning of violence and insecurity in nine towns and cities in Columbia and Guatemala to create a framework of how and why daily violence takes place at the community level. It uses pioneering new methods of participatory urban appraisal to ask local people about their own perceptions of violence as mediated by family, gender, ethnicity and age. It develops a typology which distinguishes between the political, social, and economic violence that afflicts communities, and which assesses the costs of consequences of violence in terms of community cohesion and social capital. This gives voice to those whose daily lives and dominated by widespread aggression, and provides important new insights for researchers and policy-makers.

Nevertheless, the environmental crisis paradigm still commands considerable support, including logging bans in the mountain watersheds of China, India, and Thailand, and is constantly being promoted by the news media. Himalayan Perceptions identifies the confusion of misunderstanding, vested interests, changing perceptions, and institutional unwillingness to base development policy on sound scientific knowledge. It analyzes the large amount of new research published since 1989 and totally refutes the entire construct. It examines recent social and economic developments in the region and identifies warfare, guerrilla activities, and widespread oppression of poor ethnic minorities as the primary cause for the instability that pervades the entire region. It is argued that the development controversy is further confounded by exaggerated reporting, even falsification, by news media, environmental publications, and agency reports alike.

    Abstract: Launch activities performed by private entities deal with a complex legal environment. The Space Treaties provide a general liability framework. Launch participants are subject to regulatory or institutional control, and to domestic liability laws. Specific contractual practice has developed due to insurance limitations, the inter-participants' waivers of liability and claims. This book synthesizes information on the norms of play, to allow the grasp of their relative weight and interactions in the assessment of liability risk for launch activities. It reveals a legal framework presently lacking sufficient predictability for an efficient liability risk management: the waivers of liability suffer weaknesses as do all such clauses, and lack uniformity and reliability; and the Space Treaties contain ambiguous terms preventing predictable determination of the States responsible for authorizing and supervising launch activities and for damage compensation, and do not reflect the liability of launch operators. This book offers suggestions of new approaches for: harmonizing waivers of liability to improve their consistency, validity and flow-down; and improving the Space Treaties for their implementation to non-governmental launch activities. In the launch community, the need for lawmaking is less compelling than in fields such as aviation. Nevertheless, adjustments to the present framework are proposed through model clauses and an international instrument, for further thinking and contribution by those sharing the opinion that creative lawmaking is needed now to prepare for tomorrow's endeavors.

    Abstract: Arnd Uhle untersucht das Verhältnis von freiheitlichem Verfassungsstaat und kultureller Identität, das bislang kaum – wenn, dann lediglich partiell – erforscht wurde. Der Autor beleuchtet die Relevanz der kulturellen Identität für Entstehung, Gestalt und Fortbestand des freiheitlichen Verfassungsstaates aus verfassungstheoretischer, aus verfassungsrechtlicher und schließlich aus europarechtlicher Perspektive.Bereits aus verfassungstheoretischer Sicht ergibt sich dabei, daß die kulturelle Identität gleichermaßen Entstehungs- wie auch Geltungsbedingung freiheitlicher Verfassungsstaatlichkeit ist, weil der freiheitliche Staat in vielfältiger Weise an die kulturelle Identität anknüpft. Eine Betrachtung aus verfassungsrechtlicher Perspektive unterstreicht diesen Befund und belegt, daß namentlich das deutsche Grundgesetz in einer prima facie zwar komplex und unüberschaubar erscheinenden, letztlich aber systematisch geordneten und differenzierenden Weise an die kulturelle Identität anknüpft – und diese angesichts ihrer Bedeutung für den dauerhaften Fortbestand des freiheitlichen Verfassungsstaates überdies durch das in der Habilitationsschrift erstmals entfaltete grundgesetzliche Staatsziel der Vitalität und Dauerhaftigkeit der freiheitlichen Verfassungsordnung mit verfassungsrechtlichem Schutz umhegt. In der Konsequenz dieses Staatsziels ist der grundgesetzgebundene Staat zur Pflege und zum Schutz der kulturellen Identität verpflichtet. Eine abschließende europarechtliche Betrachtung verdeutlicht, daß die grundgesetzliche Anknüpfung an die kulturelle Identität wie auch deren verfassungsrechtliche Sicherung den Schutz des Art. 6 Abs.3 EUV genießen, der die Achtung der nationalen Identität anordnet.

    Abstract: Die Arbeit befasst sich mit dem mandatum iuris gentium und der völkerrechtlichen Treuhand. Im ersten historischen Teil werden die rechts- und ideengeschichtlichen Wurzeln beider Institute nachvollzogen. Im zweiten Teil werden problematische Fälle des modernen Völkerrechts dargestellt, in denen das Mandats- bzw. Treuhandrecht in völkerrechtlichen Streitfragen besondere Relevanz hatte und z. T noch hat, z.B. Südwestafrika/Namibia, Israel/Palästina und Nauru. Im dritten und letzten Teil wird die Zukunft der völkerrechtlichen Treuhand untersucht, insbesondere in besonders aktuellen Fällen wie Kosovo, Afghanistan und Ost-Timor, die de facto mit der völkerrechtlichen Treuhand vergleichbar sind. In diesem Teil werden auch Vorschläge zu Wiederbelebung des UN-Treuhandsystems, auch im Umweltvölkerrecht, und ähnliche Vorschläge aus der Völkerrechtslehre diskutiert. Insgesamt wird festgestellt, dass der Treuhandgedanke seit seiner Entstehung im Völkerrecht nicht an Aktualität eingebüßt hat.

Diese Lesart der Biographien der Unternehmer zeigt nachdrücklich, wie Konstrukte »kultureller Grenzen« Handlungsrelevanz entfalten und wie sie in der Handlungspraxis - indem Akteure unbewusst oder strategisch auf sie rekurrieren - (re-)produziert, aber auch verändert werden. Damit ergänzt die Studie die aktuelle Diskussion über Inter- bzw. Transkulturalität um eine wichtige, innovative Perspektive.

    Abstract: Taking an interdisciplinary approach, this volume focuses on the trust processes between people within organizations, with an emphasis on empirical studies. Rational foundations and psychological motivations for trust are taken into account through conceptual and empirical chapters. The authors begin by summarizing a number of key elements from the literature including how trust develops in time, and how its development is affected by social-psychological phenomena. This includes the notion of "framing": the interpretive context in which actions are perceived and evaluated. A conceptual framework is then used to analyse trust and power in the internal relationships of the organization. The contributors take up this issue in an evolutionary analysis of competition between trust and cheating.
