    Abstract: Das 20. Jahrhundert ist oft als das Jahrhundert der Gewalt bezeichnet worden. Daher mangelt es nicht an Gewaltphänomenen, die es genauer zu untersuchen gilt, als dies bislang geschehen ist. In diesem Band werden deswegen Gewalttaten aus neuen Perspektiven untersucht, neue Interpretationen ihrer Entstehung vorgestellt und neue Herausforderungen der sozialwissenschaftlichen Gewaltforschung debattiert. Folgende Fragen werden unter anderem in diesem gesellschaftspolitisch folgenreichen Buch behandelt: Kann der lange dominierende Begriff der physischen Gewalt überhaupt noch leitend sein, und muß die Gewaltanalyse sich nicht wieder stärker der strukturellen Gewalt zuwenden, da zunehmend eine »Gewalt ohne Gesicht« auftritt? Stecken die Ursachen im Gewalthandeln selbst, so daß Hinweise auf soziale Hintergründe etwa in die Irre führen? Verlieren sozialwissenschaftliche Forschungen aufgrund neuer biologischer Ansätze völlig an Relevanz? Biographische Informationen Wilhelm Heitmeyer, geboren 1945, war von 1996 bis 2013 Direktor des Instituts für interdisziplinäre Konflikt- und Gewaltforschung der Universität Bielefeld und arbeitet dort jetzt als Forschungsprofessor. In der edition suhrkamp gab er u. a. die Reihe Deutsche Zustände heraus. Wilhelm Heitmeyer, geboren 1945, war von 1996 bis 2013 Direktor des Instituts für interdisziplinäre Konflikt- und Gewaltforschung der Universität Bielefeld und arbeitet dort jetzt als Forschungsprofessor.     Abstract: Pre-Conquest attitudes towards the dying and the dead have major implications for every aspect of culture, society and religion of the Anglo-Saxon period; but death-bed and funerary practices have been comparatively and unjustly neglected by historical scholarship. In her wide-ranging analysis, Dr Thompson examines such practices in the context of confessional and penitential literature, wills, poetry, chronicles and homilies, to show that complex and ambiguous ideas about death were current at all levels of Anglo-Saxon society. Her study also takes in grave monuments, showing in particular how the Anglo-Scandinavian sculpture of the ninth to the eleventh centuries may indicate not only the status, but also the religious and cultural alignment of those who commissioned and made them. VICTORIA THOMPSON undertook her postgraduate work in English and Medieval Studies at the University of York and currently lectures in medieval history for New York University's London Program.

    Abstract: Arnd Uhle untersucht das Verhältnis von freiheitlichem Verfassungsstaat und kultureller Identität, das bislang kaum – wenn, dann lediglich partiell – erforscht wurde. Der Autor beleuchtet die Relevanz der kulturellen Identität für Entstehung, Gestalt und Fortbestand des freiheitlichen Verfassungsstaates aus verfassungstheoretischer, aus verfassungsrechtlicher und schließlich aus europarechtlicher Perspektive.Bereits aus verfassungstheoretischer Sicht ergibt sich dabei, daß die kulturelle Identität gleichermaßen Entstehungs- wie auch Geltungsbedingung freiheitlicher Verfassungsstaatlichkeit ist, weil der freiheitliche Staat in vielfältiger Weise an die kulturelle Identität anknüpft. Eine Betrachtung aus verfassungsrechtlicher Perspektive unterstreicht diesen Befund und belegt, daß namentlich das deutsche Grundgesetz in einer prima facie zwar komplex und unüberschaubar erscheinenden, letztlich aber systematisch geordneten und differenzierenden Weise an die kulturelle Identität anknüpft – und diese angesichts ihrer Bedeutung für den dauerhaften Fortbestand des freiheitlichen Verfassungsstaates überdies durch das in der Habilitationsschrift erstmals entfaltete grundgesetzliche Staatsziel der Vitalität und Dauerhaftigkeit der freiheitlichen Verfassungsordnung mit verfassungsrechtlichem Schutz umhegt. In der Konsequenz dieses Staatsziels ist der grundgesetzgebundene Staat zur Pflege und zum Schutz der kulturellen Identität verpflichtet. Eine abschließende europarechtliche Betrachtung verdeutlicht, daß die grundgesetzliche Anknüpfung an die kulturelle Identität wie auch deren verfassungsrechtliche Sicherung den Schutz des Art. 6 Abs.3 EUV genießen, der die Achtung der nationalen Identität anordnet.

    Abstract: When Flesh Becomes Word collects nine different examples of British libertine literature that appeared before 1750. Three of these--The School of Venus (1680), Venus in the Cloister (1725), and A Dialogue Between a Married Lady and a Maid (1740)--are famous "whore dialogues," dramatic conversations between an older, experienced woman and a younger, inexperienced maid. Previously unavailable in an affordable edition, these dialogues combine sex; education,medical folklore, and erotic literature in a decidedly proto-pornographic form. This edition presents other important examples of libertine literature, including bawdy poetry, a salacious medical treatise, an irreverent travelogue, and a criminal biography.     Abstract: What makes us the people we are? Culture evidently plays a part, but how large a part? Is culture alone the source of our identities? Some have argued that human nature is the foundation of culture, others that culture is the foundation of human identity. Catherine Belsey calls for a more nuanced, relational account of what it is to be human, and in doing so puts forward a significant new theory of culture. Culture and the Real explains with Professor Belsey's characteristic lucidity the views of recent theorists, including Jean-François Lyotard, Judith Butler and Slavoj Zizek, as well as their debt to the earlier work of Kant and Hegel, in order to take issue with their accounts of what it is to be human. To explore the human, she demonstrates, is to acknowledge the relationship between culture and what we don't know: not the familiar world picture presented to us by culture as 'reality', but the unsayable, or the strange region that lies beyond culture, which Lacan has called 'the real'. Culture, she argues, registers a sense of its own limits in ways more subtle than the theorists allow.     Abstract: In a world increasingly marked by migration and dislocation, the question of displacement, and of establishing a sense of belonging, has become ever more common and ever more urgent. But what of those who stay in place? How do people who remain in their place of origin or ancestral homeland rearticulate a sense of connection, of belonging, when ownership of the territory they occupy is contested? Focusing on Australia, Allaine Cerwonka examines the physical and narrative spatial practices by which people reclaim territory in the wake of postcolonial claims to land by indigenous people and new immigration of "foreigners." As a multicultural, postcolonial nation whose claims to land until recently were premised on the notion of the continent as "empty" (terra nullius), Australia offers an especially rich lens for understanding the reterritorialization of the nation-state in an era of globalization. To this end, Native to the Nation provides a multisited ethnography of two communities in Melbourne, the Fitzroy Police Station and the East Melbourne Garden Club, allowing us to see how bodies are managed and nations physically constructed in everyday confrontations and cultivations.

    Abstract: Launch activities performed by private entities deal with a complex legal environment. The Space Treaties provide a general liability framework. Launch participants are subject to regulatory or institutional control, and to domestic liability laws. Specific contractual practice has developed due to insurance limitations, the inter-participants' waivers of liability and claims. This book synthesizes information on the norms of play, to allow the grasp of their relative weight and interactions in the assessment of liability risk for launch activities. It reveals a legal framework presently lacking sufficient predictability for an efficient liability risk management: the waivers of liability suffer weaknesses as do all such clauses, and lack uniformity and reliability; and the Space Treaties contain ambiguous terms preventing predictable determination of the States responsible for authorizing and supervising launch activities and for damage compensation, and do not reflect the liability of launch operators. This book offers suggestions of new approaches for: harmonizing waivers of liability to improve their consistency, validity and flow-down; and improving the Space Treaties for their implementation to non-governmental launch activities. In the launch community, the need for lawmaking is less compelling than in fields such as aviation. Nevertheless, adjustments to the present framework are proposed through model clauses and an international instrument, for further thinking and contribution by those sharing the opinion that creative lawmaking is needed now to prepare for tomorrow's endeavors.

    Abstract: Die Arbeit befasst sich mit dem mandatum iuris gentium und der völkerrechtlichen Treuhand. Im ersten historischen Teil werden die rechts- und ideengeschichtlichen Wurzeln beider Institute nachvollzogen. Im zweiten Teil werden problematische Fälle des modernen Völkerrechts dargestellt, in denen das Mandats- bzw. Treuhandrecht in völkerrechtlichen Streitfragen besondere Relevanz hatte und z. T noch hat, z.B. Südwestafrika/Namibia, Israel/Palästina und Nauru. Im dritten und letzten Teil wird die Zukunft der völkerrechtlichen Treuhand untersucht, insbesondere in besonders aktuellen Fällen wie Kosovo, Afghanistan und Ost-Timor, die de facto mit der völkerrechtlichen Treuhand vergleichbar sind. In diesem Teil werden auch Vorschläge zu Wiederbelebung des UN-Treuhandsystems, auch im Umweltvölkerrecht, und ähnliche Vorschläge aus der Völkerrechtslehre diskutiert. Insgesamt wird festgestellt, dass der Treuhandgedanke seit seiner Entstehung im Völkerrecht nicht an Aktualität eingebüßt hat.

    Abstract: After Race pushes us beyond the old "race vs. class" debates to delve deeper into the structural conditions that spawn racism. Darder and Torres place the study of racism forthrightly within the context of contemporary capitalism. While agreeing with those who have argued that the concept of "race" does not have biological validity, they go further to insist that the concept also holds little political, symbolic, or descriptive value when employed in social science and policy research. Darder and Torres argue for the need to jettison the concept of "race," while calling adamantly for the critical study of racism. They maintain that an understanding of structural class inequality is fundamentally germane to comprehending the growing significance of racism in capitalist America.

Individual chapters written by some of the leading, young historians of welfare examine how advantages gained from access to common land, mobilisation of kinship support, resorting to crime, and other marginal resources could prop up struggling households. They suggest how the balance of these strategies might change over time or be modified by gender, life-cycle and geography.
