As part of an EU-funded project this volume deals with the musical activities of minorities and their impact on musical traditions in Europe. It also raises questions such as: How are musical traditions of minorities integrated in education and the public music life? Can music facilitate transcultural dialogue? And to what extent do musical practice and performance reassert the own cultural tradition in a foreign environment? Answers to those and similar questions as well as a review on what can be observed in the 21st century Europe are gathered in various thematic approaches. The book also provides model projects with a practical insight into the life and work with music of migrant and minority cultures across Europe

    Abstract: First published in 2000, Dipesh Chakrabarty's influential Provincializing Europe addresses the mythical figure of Europe that is often taken to be the original site of modernity in many histories of capitalist transition in non-Western countries. This imaginary Europe, Dipesh Chakrabarty argues, is built into the social sciences. The very idea of historicizing carries with it some peculiarly European assumptions about disenchanted space, secular time, and sovereignty. Measured against such mythical standards, capitalist transition in the third world has often seemed either incomplete or lacking. Provincializing Europe proposes that every case of transition to capitalism is a case of translation as well--a translation of existing worlds and their thought--categories into the categories and self-understandings of capitalist modernity. Now featuring a new preface in which Chakrabarty responds to his critics, this book globalizes European thought by exploring how it may be renewed both for and from the margins

    Abstract: Diese Studie analysiert das dialogische Zusammenspiel zwischen den europäischen und türkischen Diskursen um den möglichen EU-Beitritt der Türkei.     Abstract: First published in 2000, Dipesh Chakrabarty's influential Provincializing Europe addresses the mythical figure of Europe that is often taken to be the original site of modernity in many histories of capitalist transition in non-Western countries. This imaginary Europe, Dipesh Chakrabarty argues, is built into the social sciences. The very idea of historicizing carries with it some peculiarly European assumptions about disenchanted space, secular time, and sovereignty. Measured against such mythical standards, capitalist transition in the third world has often seemed either incomplete or lacking. Provincializing Europe proposes that every case of transition to capitalism is a case of translation as well--a translation of existing worlds and their thought--categories into the categories and self-understandings of capitalist modernity. Now featuring a new preface in which Chakrabarty responds to his critics, this book globalizes European thought by exploring how it may be renewed both for and from the margins.

    Abstract: The world's largest and longest-running song competition, the Eurovision Song Contest is a significant and extremely popular media event throughout the continent and abroad. The Contest is broadcast live in over 30 countries with over 100 million viewers annually. Established in 1956 as a televised spectacle to unify postwar Western Europe through music, the Contest features singers who represent a participating nation with a new popular song. Viewers vote by phone for their favourite performance, though they cannot vote for their own country's entry. This process alone reveals much about national identities and identifications, as voting patterns expose deep-seated alliances and animosities among participating countries. Here, an international group of scholars from a variety of disciplines, including musicology, communications, history, sociology, English and German studies, explore how the contest sheds light on issues of European politics, national and European identity, race, gender and sexuality, and the aesthetics of camp. For some countries, participation in Eurovision has been simultaneously an assertion of modernity and a claim to membership in Europe and the West. Eurovision is sometimes regarded as a low-brow camp spectacle of little aesthetic or intellectual value. The essays in this collection often contradict this assumption, demonstrating that the contest has actually been a significant force and forecaster for social, cultural and political transformations in postwar Europe.

    Abstract: Dieses Buch behandelt die Arbeitsmigration aus Polen nach Deutschland nach der EU-Osterweiterung im Mai 2004. Einzelne Beiträge befassen sich mit der neuen rechtlichen Lage und der damit verbundenen Verschiebung der Wanderungsströme in Richtung der Länder, die ihre Arbeitsmärkte öffneten. Des Weiteren widmen sich die Autoren den unterschiedlichen Migrantengruppen und diskutieren die Struktur und die Formen der neuen Migration sowie die Rolle der Migrationsnetzwerke. Dabei liegt der Fokus auf den transnationalen Praktiken der Migranten und ihrer sozialen Positionierung. Im Anschluss werden die Folgen der Arbeitswanderung in einem offenen europäischen Raum sowie die Herausforderungen der transnationalen Migration für das Verständnis der sozialen Integration in Europa erörtert

    Abstract: A fundamental issue in society today, migration has been undergoing a new dynamic transformation, calling for new policy approaches. This new dynamic is not yet understood clearly, let alone that adequate policy answers for 'the managing' of these new migration processes and the consequences for receiving and sending societies are within. This comprehensive overview of migration research conducted throughout the IMISCoe network of European research analyses the influx of various types of immigrants in Western Europe post World War II, mostly to large cities, as well as the reactions of the native populations and governments to the changes and pressures brought about by immigration.
    Abstract: Internationale migratie en integratie zijn hete hangijzers in Europa. Het aantal migranten is de afgelopen decennia toegenomen, maar ook het fenomeen migratie zelf is veranderd, evenals de ontvangende samenlevingen en de landen van herkomst. De nieuwe dynamiek die deze veranderingen tot gevolg hebben wordt nog niet begrepen, laat staan dat de politiek adequate antwoorden heeft op de nieuwe vragen. In deze publicatie wordt een overzicht gepresenteerd van het IMISCoe onderzoek en wordt de lijn uitgezet voor toekomstig onderzoek. Hierbij worden cruciale vragen beantwoord die opkomen in het tijdperk van globalisering.     Abstract: Urban mindscapes are structures of thinking about a city, built on conceptualisations of the city’s physical landscape as well as on its image as transported through cultural representation, memory and imagination. This book pursues three main strands of inquiry in its exploration of these ‘landscapes of the mind’ in a European context. The first strand concerns the theory and methodology of researching urban mindscapes and urban ‘imaginaries’. The second strand investigates some of the representations, symbols and collective images that feed into our understanding of European cities. It discusses representations of the city in literature, film, television and other cultural forms, which, in James Donald’s phrase, constitute ‘archives of urban images’. The third and last section of the volume concentrates on the relationship between the collective mindscapes of cities, urban policy and the practice of city marketing

    Abstract: Citizenship is frequently invoked both as an instrument and goal of immigrant integration. Yet, in migration contexts, citizenship also marks a distinction between members and outsiders based on their different relations to particular states. A migration perspective highlights the boundaries of citizenship and political control over entry and exit as well as the fact that foreign residents remain in most countries deprived of core rights of political participation. This book summarizes current theories and empirical research on the legal status and political participation of migrants in European democracies.

    Abstract: In August 1880, businessman Adrian Jakobsen convinced eight Inuit men, women, and children from Hebron and Nakvak, Labrador to accompany him to Europe to be "exhibited" in zoos and Völkerschauen (ethnographic shows). Abraham, Maria, Noggasak, Paingo, Sara, Terrianiak, Tobias, and Ulrike agreed, partly for the money and partly out of curiosity to see the wonders of Europe, which they had heard about from Moravian missionaries.The Inuit arrived in the fall of 1880 and were much talked and written about in the local press. Meanwhile, the Moravian missionaries, who had begged them not to embark on the journey, were busily writing letters and trying to stay in contact with Abraham and his family. By January 1881 all eight Inuit had died of smallpox. This story is told through several different perspectives, from Abraham's diary, the earliest known Inuit autobiography, and the missionaries’ letters and reports, to a scholarly article, newspaper pieces, and even advertising. Many illustrations, including portraits done of the Inuit visitors, scans of some of the original documents in German, and recent photos of the abandoned Moravian mission in Hebron, round out Abraham’s intriguing and unfortunate story.

    Abstract: Bei dem Wettstreit zwischen Europas Metropolen spielen spektakuläre Museumsneubauten eine zentrale Rolle. Dieser für die städtische Imagebildung so wichtige Bau-Boom wird nun zum Gegenstand einer Studie, die sich mit Neubauten von Museen in den vergangenen drei Jahrzehnten in Amsterdam, Frankfurt am Main und Prag beschäftigt. Im Zentrum des Interesses stehen die urbane Prägung und die internationale Vermarktung der neuen Häuser durch die Medien. Darüber hinaus gibt der Band einen differenzierten Überblick über die Pläne und Ziele der in diesen drei Städten verwirklichten Museumsbauten, wobei auch die Konzepte der Eröffnungsausstellungen berücksichtigt werden. Die Ergebnisse der materialreichen Studie, die sich gleichermaßen an Kulturpolitiker, Architekten, Stadtplaner und Museumsdirektoren wendet, können einen wertvollen Beitrag dazu leisten, bei zukünftigen Museumsplanungen Fehler zu vermeiden und aus den Erfahrungen der Kollegen zu lernen
