Revitalization of the vita contemplativa and relearning of the art of lingering are essential to overcoming the current time crisis.»Scent of Time« makes explicit the philosophico-temporal foundations of Han's critique of neoliberalism and of digital culture, and is indispensible for an understanding of his later books »society of tiredness« and »society of transparency«

    Abstract: This article is based on a web survey of on-line and print translations into English of poetry by writers from Bosnia since the 1992-1995 war. Combining insights from Actor Network Theory, Activity Theory and Goffman's Social Game Theory, it examines the relationships between human and textual agents in the production of poetry translations. It maps these relationships onto agents' geographic 'positionality'. Among the findings are:(1) Poetry translation is produced by networks of agents working across a 'distributed' space. This implies that it is simplistic to conceptualise literary translation in terms of one agent's loyalty to one cultural space.(2) Translators often carry less power in a production network than an anthology/journal editor or a living source poet.(3) Networks involving players from source-language regions working in a target-language country are particularly effective in publication terms.

    Abstract: Das Verhältnis zwischen Geist und Natur ist seit der frühen Neuzeit eines der großen Themen der Philosophie, das in das Zentrum unseres Selbstverständnisses als menschliche Wesen stößt. Auch die aktuellen Debatten in der Philosophie des Geistes sind davon bestimmt. Dabei steht seit Descartes im Hintergrund die Überzeugung, dass zwischen Geist und Natur eine tiefe Kluft besteht und unser Geist nicht in die Natur passt. Erst diese Überzeugung verleiht den Debatten ihre Brisanz. Diese Kluft ist jedoch nicht leicht zu präzisieren, denn weder ist der Naturbegriff klar, noch gibt es eine allgemein akzeptierte Definition des Mentalen, aus der hervorginge, was genau das Mentale zu einem nicht-natürlichen Phänomen macht. Das eröffnet den Spielraum für die Vermutung, dass die Kluft zwischen Geist und Natur nur eine scheinbare ist. Immerhin sprechen starke Intuitionen dafür, den Geist ohne reduktive Abstriche als Bestandteil der Natur zu betrachten: Er ist ein Produkt der Evolution; die Grenze zur tierischen Kognition ist eine graduelle; unsere personale Identität hängt von unserem Selbstverständnis als biologische Wesen ab. Die Beiträge des Bandes sammeln und diskutieren Argumente dafür, den menschlichen Geist auf eine unproblematische Weise als Teil der Natur zu begreifen, ohne eine tiefe Erschütterung unseres Selbstbildes befürchten zu müssen.

    Description / Table of Contents: In Zeiten transkultureller Bewegungen erweist sich die Literatur, die sich aus verschiedenen Gründen nicht in nationale Grenzen einpassen lässt, als ein zentrales Untersuchungsfeld: Kulturelle Veränderungen, die durch Migration von Menschen, Ideen, Waren und Sprachen entstehen, lassen sich hier auf eine umfassende Weise analysieren. In aktuellen Fallstudien untersuchen die Beiträge dieses Bandes unter anderem kulturelle Grenzziehungen in muslimischen bzw. türkischen Gemeinschaften und setzen sich dabei mit dem neuen »Zwang zur Kultur« auseinander. Daran anschließend wird der Begriff »Weltliteratur« auf seine Brauchbarkeit in diesen Kontexten untersucht, insbesondere im Hinblick auf nicht-europäische, etwa afrikanische Repräsentationsmodelle von Literatur. Einzelanalysen von Filmen und literarischen Texten zeigen, dass die so genannte Migrationsliteratur eine ästhetische Reflexion auf kulturelle Integration einerseits, aber auch auf verschiedene Formen von sozialer, individueller und sprachlicher Desintegration andererseits ist.     Abstract: From a very young age we are told not to stare, and one hallmark of maturation is the ability to resist (or at least hide) our staring behavior. And yet, rarely do we master the impulse. Despite the complicated role it plays in our development, and its unique brand of visual enticement, staring has not been considered before as a suitable object for socio-cultural analysis. What is it about certain kinds of people that makes it impossible to take our eyes off them? Why are some visual stimuli irresistible? Why does staring produce so much anxiety? Drawing on examples from art, media, fashion, history and memoir, Garland-Thomson defines staring, explores the factors that motivate it, and considers the targets and the effects of the stare. A bodily inventory then enumerates how stares actually operate in daily life. A section on "Bodies" focuses on the question of size and scale as key indicators of normalcy, while certain body parts show themselves to be disproportionately arresting, as passages on "Faces" "Hands" and "Breasts" reveal. A concluding chapter on "Beholding" considers the frisson at play between starer and staree and offers an alternative way of understanding visual communication between people.     Abstract: James Dawson first published Australian Aborigines in 1881, after deciding that his careful description of the tribes, languages, customs, and characteristics of the indigenous peoples of the western district of Victoria was too bulky for its originally intended publication in a newspaper. Essentially a field-inspired anthropological account of the dwindling Aboriginal population, written before the emergence of anthropology as a formal discipline, Dawson's book draws on his daughter's ability to speak the local languages and attempts a balanced description of a culture he considered ill-used and under-appreciated by white settlers. Minute details about clothing, tools, settlement and beliefs combine to depict a complex society that possessed highly ritualised customs deserving of respect. Dawson also included an extensive vocabulary of words in three indigenous languages that he hoped would facilitate further cross-cultural understanding. His work provides valuable source material for modern researchers in anthropology and linguistics

    Abstract: This insightful study proposes a unified theory of speech through which conflicting ideas about language might be understood. It is founded on a number of key points, such as the continuum of linguistic behaviour, extensive variation in language features, the importance of regional and social proximity to shared linguistic production, and differential frequency as a key factor in linguistic production both in regional and social groups and in text corpora. These three texts not only constitute epoch-making novels, but are also novels of their epoch, in the sense that they deal with the significant historical currents of thought of their time in a literary manner. One of the most succinct characteristics of their epoch was a diversity of epistemological positions, never to be attained again afterwards. Using an interpretive approach, this study sheds light on how the three authors dealt with this spectrum in their aesthetic works.

    Abstract: This book is a comprehensive survey of the structure, organization and institutionalization of local community religious traditions in north China villages in the twentieth century. These traditions have their own forms of leaders, deities and beliefs. Despite much local variation one everywhere finds similar temples, images, offerings and temple festivals, all supported by practical concerns for divine aid to deal with the problems of everyday life. These local traditions are a structure in the history of Chinese religions; they have a clear sense of their own integrity and rules, handed down by their ancestors. There are Daoist, Buddhist and government influences on these traditions, but they must be adapted to the needs of local communities. It is the villagers who build temples and organize festivals, in which all members of the community are expected to participate and contribute.     Abstract: This book explores the meanings of educational interactions which aim to promote peace and positive relationships.
