    Abstract: Immigrant Stories portrays the contexts and academic trajectories of development of three unique immigrant groups: Cambodian, Dominican and Portuguese. The children of immigrant families - or second generation youth - are the fastest growing population of school children in the US. However, very little is known about these children's academic and psychological development during middle childhood. We examine the previously under-explored intricacies of children's emerging cultural attitudes and identities, academic engagement, and academic achievement. These processes are studied alongside a myriad of factors in the family and school environment that combine to shape children's academic psychological functioning during this important period. Through a three-year longitudinal study, including interviews with teachers, parents and children, this book presents a fascinating look at the community, school, and family contexts of child development among second-generation children. Both pre-immigration and post-immigration characteristics are explored as critical factors for understanding children of immigrants' development. In the current climate of US immigration policy debate, we offer research findings that may inform educators and administrators about the sources of community strengths and challenges facing our newest immigrant generations.

In recent years, research has begun to inform this debate, but many of the key outcomes have not been adequately examined, or have been examined in only a few states. Do the conflicting conclusions of different studies reflect real differences in effects driven by variation in charter laws and policies? Or do they reflect differences in research approaches --some of which may be biased? This book examines four primary research questions: (1) What are the characteristics of students transferring to charter schools? (2) What effect do charter schools have on test-score gains for students who transfer between TPSs and charter schools? (3) What is the effect of attending a charter high school on the probability of graduating and of entering college? (4) What effect does the introduction of charter schools have on test scores of students in nearby TPSs?

    Abstract: This book deals with the development and transformation of the part of the educational system that has been called 'the non-university higher education sector', 'the polytechnic sector', and 'the college sector'. In most Western European countries, higher education has to an increasing extent developed outside universities, partly through the establishment of new institutions, and partly through the up-grading of professional and vocational schools into higher education colleges. Yet, there is a shortage of in-depth studies on the changes that have taken place in this part of the educational system, and on the processes that have driven this development. This book gives an overview of the stepwise transformation of higher education systems. It uses Norway as a national case for in-depth analyses, and then compares this with parallel developments in Western Europe. The development is discussed within the frames of three phases: fragmented expansion, horizontal integration, and vertical integration.

Er verweist auf ein modernes Todesproblem: Mit ihm wird die Angst des sich »nur noch mit sich selbst identisch« (Luhmann) verstehenden Individuums vor einem Selbstverlust thematisiert, die eng mit der Verzeitlichung der Gesellschaft sowie der anthropologischen Transformation seit der Aufklärung zusammenhängt. Welche Bedeutung kommt dem Tod zu nach Überwindung der christlich-mittelalterlichen Seelenvorstellungen im Zuge der Aufklärung?Die Studie rekonstruiert die wechselseitigen Bezüge zwischen Wissen und Tod, die der Bildung dieses Begriffs zugrunde liegen. Die soziale Reichweite des Scheintodes wird mittels konkurrierender Deutungsmuster und kultureller Praktiken des Umgangs mit Tod und Sterben untersucht, zu denen neben Diskursen aus der Medizin oder Theologie religiöses und überliefertes Wissen zählen

    Abstract: Demographic and societal changes are strongly affecting the contexts of childhood and the experience of being children. At the same time, across social groups and across societies, diversities and inequalities in childhood are taking new forms. Public concern over issues such as fertility rates, mothers working, early childhood education and care as well as solemn international declarations of children's rights are examples of the ongoing politicization of childhood. Drawing both on micro and macro, national and comparative studies, this volume of "Comparative Social Research" traces some of the trends and analyzes in comparative perspective how they affect images and practices of childhood and transforms responsibilities for children. The volume's focus is mainly on children in the developed countries, but attention is also paid to transnational diversities and to the impact of globalisation through the experiences of migrant children and of children living through the processes of modernization in the developing world

    Abstract: »Scheintod« ist ein Neologismus des ausgehenden 18. Jahrhunderts. Er verweist auf ein modernes Todesproblem: Mit ihm wird die Angst des sich »nur noch mit sich selbst identisch« (Luhmann) verstehenden Individuums vor einem Selbstverlust thematisiert, die eng mit der Verzeitlichung der Gesellschaft sowie der anthropologischen Transformation seit der Aufklärung zusammenhängt. Welche Bedeutung kommt dem Tod zu nach Überwindung der christlich-mittelalterlichen Seelenvorstellungen im Zuge der Aufklärung? Die Studie rekonstruiert die wechselseitigen Bezüge zwischen Wissen und Tod, die der Bildung dieses Begriffs zugrunde liegen. Die soziale Reichweite des Scheintodes wird mittels konkurrierender Deutungsmuster und kultureller Praktiken des Umgangs mit Tod und Sterben untersucht, zu denen neben Diskursen aus der Medizin oder Theologie religiöses und überliefertes Wissen zählen.

    Abstract: In this study, e-learning support strategies of three innovative American research universities are investigated. The findings from over 50 interviews are presented in form of detailed qualitative case studies. On the basis of a comparative analysis recommendations are formulated on how structural and cultural conditions for e-learning support may be derived in order to effectively reach out to the faculty. The necessity of adequate strategic management practice on different levels is illustrated. This study was motivated by the current e-learning developments in German-speaking Europe. Hence, the potential and the limitations of a transfer of the study findings to the Swiss context is thoroughly considered.

    Abstract: This volume serves as an introduction to a rich and as yet under-explored period in the history of women's ideas. The volume provides a partial insight into the richness and complexity of women's political ideas in the centuries prior to the French Revolution. The essays in this collection examine women's political writings with particular reference to the themes of virtue (especially the virtue of phronesis or prudence), liberty, and toleration.
    Abstract: This volume challenges the view that women have not contributed to the historical development of political ideas, and highlights the depth and complexity of women's political thought in the centuries prior to the French Revolution.From the late medieval period to the enlightenment, a significant number of European women wrote works dealing with themes of political significance. The essays in this collection examine their writings with particular reference to the ideas of virtue, liberty, and toleration. The figures discussed include Christine de Pizan, Catherine d'Amboise, Isabella d'Este, Elizabeth I, Katherine Chidley, Elizabeth Poole, Margaret Cavendish, Damaris Masham, Mary Astell, Elizabeth Carter, Catharine Macaulay, Mary Wollstonecraft, and Cornélie Wouters. These women actively contributed to the political practice and discourse of their times. Some of the women question their exclusion from political power and argue in favour of women's virtue, prudence, and capacity to govern. Others aim to demonstrate women's spiritual equality with men, to defend liberty of conscience, and to highlight the importance of education as a means to moral development.     Abstract: This volume is the first of its kind in which phenomenologists from the West join hands with specialists from mainland China and Hong Kong to discuss the heritage of Husserl s Logical Investigations. Whereas all Western contributors to the volume are scholars who possess indubitable authority in phenomenology, their Chinese counterparts are much less well-known in the Western academic arena. Yet the latters' contributions are of the utmost interest. From them readers will learn of the early reception of Husserl s Logical Investigations in China. They will also understand in what way Husserl s doctrine of intentionality of consciousness in the Logical Investigations has paved the way to Scheler s phenomenology of feeling, to a novel phenomenological explication of religious experience, as well as to the little known young Foucault s tentative formulation of a paradoxical phenomenology of the dream. Last but not least, they will also discover how a young Chinese scholar undertakes a thorough reassessment of the problem of being in Husserl in the light of Heideggerian ontology.     Abstract: Economic globalization has been accompanied by implementation of education reforms linked to accountability and public finance schemes that emphasize student choice in schools and student loans in higher education. This book provides a systematic evaluation of the effects of state education reforms and finance policies over the past decades. It includes a discussion of the need for a fundamental rethinking of educational policy in the United States.
    Abstract: Economic globalization has been accompanied by implementation of education reforms linked to accountability and public finance schemes that emphasize student choice in schools and student loans in higher education. In the U.S. these reforms are rationalized based on intermediate variables, like the number of math credits completed in high school and net prices. However, the reforms rationalized based on this research are seldom evaluated in relation to outcomes (i.e., measures of student achievement and equal opportunity to attain an education). In Education and the Public Interest the editor re-examines the political rationales for these reforms. John Rawls's theory of justice is reconstructed to develop a framework for assessing the effects of public policy on these outcomes. This volume undertakes a comparative study of the states in the U.S. to examine how education reforms influence student achievement, high school graduation, and college access, and finance schemes influence college access. Policies implemented by states in the 1990s were associated with improved achievement, as measured by test scores for high school students. These policies also correlate with increased high school drop out rates and the widening gap in college enrolment rates across income groups. This volume considers how privatization and accountability policies can be reconstructed to reduce inequality while continuing to improve student achievement and college enrolment.     Abstract: This book contributes to the ongoing revision of early modern British history by examining the apocalyptic tradition through the life and writings of Joseph Mede (1586-1638). The history of the British apocalyptic tradition has yet to undergo a thorough revision. Past studies followed a historiographical paradigm which associated millenarianism with a revolutionary agenda. A careful study of Joseph Mede, one of the key individuals responsible for the rebirth of millenarianism in England, suggests a different picture of seventeenth-century apocalypticism. The roots of Mede's apocalyptic thought are not found in extreme activism, but in the detailed study of the Apocalypse with the aid of ancient Christian and Jewish sources. Mede's legacy illustrates the geographical prevalence and long-term sustainability of his interpretations. This volume shows that the continual discussion of millenarian ideas reveals a vibrant tradition that cannot be reconstructed to fit within one simple historiographical narrative.

    Abstract: Long description: Diese Publikation zur Erforschung der historischen Entwicklung einer „Wissenschaft Soziale Arbeit" am Beispiel des in Vergessenheit geratenen (Armenpflege)Konzeptes „De subventione pauperum" (1526) des spanischen Humanisten, Voraufklärers, Europäers und Sozialreformers jüdischer Herkunft, Juan Luis Vives (1492-1540), möchte eine Lücke schließen. Vives war Vertreter einer dramatischen Übergangsepoche vom Mittelalter zur frühen Neuzeit. Hier ergeben sich vergleichbare schwierige Herausforderungen, wie sie Übergangszeiten immer charakterisieren, und wie wir sie auch heute unter dem Umbau des Sozialstaates (wieder) zu bewältigen haben. Die frühneuzeitliche Armenpflege war gekennzeichnet durch eine Form der „Sozialdisziplinierung", die durch „Individualisierung", „Kommunalisierung", „Pädagogisierung" und „Bürokratisierung" die Masse entwurzelter Menschen zu grundlegenden Verhaltensveränderungen und Anpassungen zu bringen suchte. Dies bedeutet(e) bis in die heutige Zeit hinein für Empfänger öffentlicher Leistungen, sich rechtfertigen zu müssen, warum sie diese Leistungen beanspruch(t)en. Vives hat auf dem Fundament der abendländisch jüdisch-christlichen Gerechtigkeits- und Verpflichtungsethik eine kritische Gesellschaftsanalyse seiner Epoche vorgenommen. Der historische Rahmen seiner anrührenden Biographie im Schatten der Inquisition und die sozialpolitische Konzeption dieses Humanisten stehen im Mittelpunkt der Untersuchung.

    Abstract: This book contains contributions about the past, present and future of e-learning in twelve European countries. The papers are written by experts about their respective countries, together with one paper that deals with the subject from a transnational perspective. The main question treated and answered in this book is how digital media has contributed to Higher Education Development in different national contexts. Beyond a mere description of the situation in different countries, the socio-technical approach adopted in this book also offers the opportunity to make comparisons and thus fosters understanding between experts from different disciplines and cultures. This book takes stock of a decade of digital media in Higher Education in Europe by presenting a first comparative approach and encouraging discussion by adopting a relativist rather than a generalist approach. Readers are thus stimulated to envisage how e-learning might have developed in their own work and learning context and to shape how it may do so.
