Abstract: The Question for Twentieth-Century China has been the integration of tradition and modernity. In this collection of essays written over a period of some twenty years (1987-2006), Chen Lai reflects on the question in an informative and original way. He reads behind the political slogans and engages with the thought both of Max Weber, Talcott Parsons and Western sociology, and representative Chinese thinkers, notably Feng Youlan and Liang Shuming. While the focus is on China, the book also appeals to anyone interested in this fascinating question of how to modernise whilst retaining the positive values of tradition. Chen Lai’s unique and balanced grasp of society marks him out as the foremost thinker in China on this topic today

Abstract: Scholars have read the Alexandrian riots of 38 CE according to intertwined dichotomies. The Alexandrian Jews fought to keep their citizenship - or to acquire it; they evaded the payment of the poll-tax - or prevented any attempts to impose it on them; they safeguarded their identity against the Greeks - or against the Egyptians. Avoiding that pattern and building on the historical reconstruction of the experience of the Alexandrian Jewish community under the Ptolemies, this work submits that the riots were the legal and political consequence of an imperial adjudication against the Jews. Most of the Jews lost their residence never to recover it again. The Roman emperor, the Roman prefect of Egypt and the Alexandrian citizenry - all shared responsibilities according to their respective and expected roles

Abstract: A much discussed question in classical studies is the comparison between the situation of poets in Augustan Rome and that of artists and intellectuals in the totalitarian regimes of the twentieth century. As instructive as this question proves to be for an understanding of the relation between the freedom of art and thinking on the one hand and power on the other, it also reveals the insufficiency of our present grasp of this crucial articulation of our humanity. This volume offers a multidisciplinary and comparative approach to the problem, complementing the historical perspective with a rega

Abstract: An Entirely New Way to Look at Human Resources in the Public Sector What makes a good worker? Why do some people naturally do well at their jobs while others struggle? These questions are at the heart of the human resource (HR) profession. And while there is no shortage of theories about how people achieve success, no one has explained the entire body of HR theories. Until now. In A Human Resources Framework for the Public Sector, Dixon Southworth offers a fresh, new perspective on HR management with the first comprehensive theoretical framework for work performance, tying human resource theories, concepts, and concerns to public administration. With the introduction of the Work Performance Framework (WPF), Southworth offers a roadmap for work performance in the nonprofit and public sectors that focuses on three fundamental objectives of HR programs and services: build human resource capacity, build performance, and build community.

Abstract: Discover how technology is affecting your business, and why typical security mechanisms are failing to address the issue of risk and trust. Security for a Web 2.0+ World looks at the perplexing issues of cyber security, and will be of interest to those who need to know how to make effective security policy decisions to engineers who design ICT systems - a guide to information security and standards in the Web 2.0+ era. It provides an understanding of IT security in the converged world of communications technology based on the Internet Protocol. Many companies are currently applying security models following legacy policies or ad-hoc solutions. A series of new security standards (ISO/ITU) allow security professionals to talk a common language. By applying a common standard, security vendors are able to create products and services that meet the challenging security demands of technology further diffused from the central control of the local area network. Companies are able to prove and show the level of maturity of their security solutions based on their proven compliance of the recommendations defined by the standard. Carlos Solari and his team present much needed information and a broader view on why and how to use and deploy standards. They set the stage for a standards-based approach to design in security, driven by various factors that include securing complex information-communications systems, the need to drive security in product development, the need to better apply security funds to get a better return on investment. Security applied after complex systems are deployed is at best a patchwork fix. Concerned with what can be done now using the technologies and methods at our disposal, the authors set in place the idea that security can be designed in to the complex networks that exist now and for those in the near future. Web 2.0 is the next great promise of ICT - we still have the chance to design in a more secure path. Time is of the essence - prevent-detect-respond!

Abstract: Part of a series of core databooks within the William Andrew Plastics Design Library, Fatigue and Tribological Properties of Plastics and Elastomers provides a comprehensive collection of graphical multipoint data and tabular data covering fatigue and tribology. The concept of fatigue is very straightforward: if an object is subjected to a stress or deformation, and it is repeated, the object becomes weaker. This weakening of plastic material is called fatigue. Tribology is the science and technology of surfaces in contact with each other and therefore covers friction, lubrication and wear. The reduction of wear and fatigue and the improvement of lubrication are key bottom-line issues for engineers and scientists involved in the plastics industry and product design with plastics. Fatigue and Tribological Properties of Plastics and Elastomers, 2e, is an update of all that has changed in the world of plastics since the 1st edition appeared nearly 15 years ago, and has been reorganized from a polymer chemistry point of view. A hard-working reference tool: part of the daily workflow of engineers and scientists involved in the plastics industry and product design with plastics The reduction of wear and fatigue and the improvement of lubrication are key bottom-line issues The data in this book provide engineers with the tools they need to design for low failure rates

Abstract: Une attitude d'athlète en entreprise !

Abstract: No previous full-scale study has been undertaken so far to study the polemical writings of the Muslim reformist Muḥammad Rashīd Riḍā (1865-1935) and his associates in his well-known journal al-Manār (The Lighthouse). The book focuses on the dynamics of Muslim understanding of Christianity during the late 19th and the early 20th century in the light of al-Manār's sources of knowledge, and its answers to the social, political and theological aspects of missionary movements in the Muslim World of Riḍā's age. The basis of the analysis encompasses the voluminous publications by Riḍā and other Manārists in his journal. Besides, it makes use of newly-discovered materials, including Riḍā's private papers, and some other remaining personal archives of some of his associates

Abstract: Class has always played a role in American religion. Class differences in religious life are inevitably felt by both those in the pews and those on the outside looking inches This volume starts a long overdue discussion about how class continues to matter - and perhaps even ways in which it does not - in American religion. Class is indeed important, whether one examines it through analysis of events and documents, surveys and interviews, or participant observation of religious groups. The chapters herein examine class as a reality that is both material and symbolic, individual and corporate. Religion and Class in America examines the myriad ways in which class continues to interact with the theologies, practices, beliefs, and group affiliations of American religion

Abstract: Mobilization against apartheid, the campaign against blood diamonds, the women's movement in Liberia where Africa's first female head of state was elected in 2005: these are all examples of socially based movements that have had a major effect on Africa's recent history. Yet the most influential theories concerning social movements worldwide have paid little heed to Africa, basing themselves more often on cases drawn from other continents. This volume draws together contributions from some leading writers on social movements in Africa, setting empirical studies alongside a couple of theoretical chapters. Africa’s social movements have distinctive features that are related to the continent’s specific history

Abstract: This book tells a different story about water. Against the backdrop of the end of the Ottoman Empire to the Palestinian uprisings, old Palestinian women recount life before and after piped water. While talking about fetching and managing household water, women also talked about being women. Women, Water and Memory speaks of many different lives. We hear stories about women's own strength and beauty, and about the woman who married a man whose ugly face made her sick. While one woman married the man “she cared for”, another was relieved that her husband died when she was too old to be forced to remarry. We learn about the joy they feel each time they dance at a wedding, the sheer satisfaction of lighting a cigarette, the loyalty and shared despair towards families with members in prison, and about the tears of sorrow at each death and the delight at each birth

This volume offers a multidisciplinary and comparative approach to the problem, complementing the historical perspective with a regard on Eastern traditions. It thus explores tentative paths for future research on an issue of critical importance for the shaping of the global world

Abstract: The central question of this volume is, whether present day medical visualisation techniques like ultrasound, endoscopy, CT, MRI and PET-scans mark a significant shift in the experience of bodily interiority. These visualisation techniques enable not only medical researchers and practitioners to look inside living bodies without literally opening them, but their inhabitants as well. This new experiential possibility may have profound implications for the ways in which the relations between ‘body’, ‘self’, and ‘world’ are configured, both on the level of cultural discourses and practices and on the level of individual experiences. The contributions to this volume investigate the body within as an historical, social and cultural construct, constituted in the interchange between technology, knowledge, representation and media. Abstract: Modern embedded systems require high performance, low cost and low power consumption. Such systems typically consist of a heterogeneous collection of processors, specialized memory subsystems, and partially programmable or fixed-function components. This heterogeneity, coupled with issues such as hardware/software partitioning, mapping, scheduling, etc., leads to a large number of design possibilities, making performance debugging and validation of such systems a difficult problem. Embedded systems are used to control safety critical applications such as flight control, automotive electronics and healthcare monitoring. Clearly, developing reliable software/systems for such applications is of utmost importance. This book describes a host of debugging and verification methods which can help to achieve this goal. Covers the major abstraction levels of embedded systems design, starting from software analysis and micro-architectural modeling, to modeling of resource sharing and communication at the system level Integrates formal techniques of validation for hardware/software with debugging and validation of embedded system design flows Includes practical case studies to answer the questions: does a design meet its requirements, if not, then which parts of the system are responsible for the violation, and once they are identified, then how should the design be suitably modified?

Abstract: Now more than ever, fear and uncertainty are becoming staples of daily life. During changing times, it's easy to worry, give up, and let fear paralyze you. However, you have more control than you think you do, and how you handle adversity is your choice-the only choice that matters. Many successful people and businesses have grown to prominence during even the worst recessions and downturns. These successful people and organizations all shared similar characteristics and took similar actions to thrive while others merely tried to survive. You can do the same. In The Shark and the Goldfish, bestselling author Jon Gordon shares an inspiring fable about a goldfish who has always been fed, a nice shark who teaches him to find food, and a wave of change that brings them together. In the process of finding food the shark teaches the goldfish the ultimate lesson-that the difference between a full belly and an empty stomach depends solely on your faith, beliefs, and actions. In the face of adversity, this is a simple fable that reinforces a proven truth-you can't control the events in your life. But you can control how you respond to them. You can allow the waves of change to crush you, or you can learn to ride them to a successful future. Packed with tips and strategies for thriving during tough times, The Shark and the Goldfish will have a lifelong impact.

Abstract: Based on an extraordinary collaboration between Steve Forbes, chairman, CEO, and editor in chief of Forbes Media, and classics professor John Prevas, Power Ambition Glory provides intriguing comparisons between six great leaders of the ancient world and contemporary business leaders. -Great leaders not only have vision but know how to build structures to effect it. Cyrus the Great did so in creating an empire based on tolerance and inclusion, an approach highly unusual for his or any age. Jack Welch and John Chambers built their business empires using a similar approach, and like Cyrus, they remain the exceptions rather than the rule. -Great leaders know how to build consensus and motivate by doing what is right rather than what is in their self-interest. Xenophon put personal gain aside to lead his fellow Greeks out of a perilous situation in Persia-something very similar to what Lou Gerstner and Anne Mulcahy did in rescuing IBM and Xerox. -Character matters in leadership. Alexander the Great had exceptional leadership skills that enabled him to conquer the eastern half of the ancient world, but he was ultimately destroyed by his inability to manage his phenomenal success. The corporate world is full of similar examples, such as the now incarcerated Dennis Kozlowski, who, flush with success at the head of his empire, was driven down the highway of self-destruction by an out-of-control ego. -A great leader is one who challenges the conventional wisdom of the day and is able to think outside the box to pull off amazing feats. Hannibal did something no one in the ancient world thought possible: he crossed the Alps in winter to challenge Rome for control of the ancient world. That same innovative way of thinking enabled Serge Brin and Larry Page of Google to challenge and best two formidable competitors, Microsoft and Yahoo! -A leader must have ambition to succeed, and Julius Caesar had plenty of it. He set Rome on the path to empire, but his success made him believe he was a living god and blinded him to the dangers that eventually did him in. The parallels with corporate leaders and Wall Street master-of-the-universe types are numerous, but none more salient than Hank Greenberg, who built the AIG insurance empire only to be struck down at the height of his success by the corporate daggers of his directors. -And finally, leadership is about keeping a sane and modest perspective in the face of success and remaining focused on the fundamentals-the...

Abstract: The Element is the point at which natural talent meets personal passion. When people arrive at the Element, they feel most themselves, most inspired, and achieve at their highest levels. The Element draws on the stories of a wide range of people: Paul McCartney, The Simpsons creator Matt Groening, Meg Ryan, Gillian Lynne, who choreographed the Broadway productions of Cats and The Phantom of the Opera, journalist Arianna Huffington, renowned physicist Richard Feynman, and many others, including business leaders and athletes. It explores the components of this new paradigm: the diversity of intelligence, the power of imagination and creativity, and the importance of commitment to our own capabilities. With a wry sense of humor, Ken Robinson looks at the conditions that enable us to find ourselves in the Element and those that stifle that possibility. He shows that age and occupation are no barrier and that once we have found our path, we can help others do so as well. The Element shows the vital need to enhance creativity and innovation by thinking differently about human resources and imagination. It is an essential strategy for transforming education, business, and communities to meet the challenges of living and succeeding in the twenty-first century.

Abstract: Ever since we first introduced the term Web 2.0, people have been asking, What ™s next? Assuming that Web 2.0 was meant to be a kind of software version number (rather than a statement about the second coming of the Web after the dotcom bust), we ™re constantly asked about Web 3.0. Is it the semantic web? The sentient web? Is it the social web? The mobile web? Is it some form of virtual reality? It is all of those, and more. The Web is no longer a collection of static pages of HTML that describe something in the world. Increasingly, the Web is the world "everything and everyone in the world casts an information shadow,an aura of data which, when captured and processed intelligently, offers extraordinary opportunity and mindbending implications. Web Squared is our way of exploring this phenomenon and giving it a name.

Abstract: The times are changing at an ever-increasing velocity. Old systems, organizations, and ways of operating no longer work in our dynamic, complex and increasingly unstable new environment. Out of this chaos and confusion, a new and different leader must emerge. Old systems and methods will no longer work. Leading the Charge is a visionary leadership book that examines the trends that have reshaped our world and the ways in which leaders and organizations can effectively respond. Tomorrow's successful leaders-in all fields, including the military, academia, politics, and business-must know how to create, operate, and thrive in very fluid, flattened, and integrated structures that are remarkably different from the traditional organizations we are used to seeing. They will have to manage rapidly changing technology and flows of information, as well as create faster and more far-reaching spans of control. Leading the Charge shows the way. It is an incisive and compelling guide to the new world of leadership, one that will prove indispensable for years to come. Organized around "Leading a New World," a revolutionary leadership course developed and taught by General Zinni at the Terry Sanford Institute of Public Policy at Duke University, Leading the Charge makes a convincing case that leaders must: -change with the times to be relevant -be ready for crisis mode at any given time -have a moral compass and the ability to steer the company in the right direction -be forward thinking, not reactive, to provide innovation and creativity -develop other great leaders.

Abstract: Do you want to be perfect? Or do you want to be happy? We're all laboring under our own and society's expectations to be perfect in every way-to look younger, to make more money, to be happy all the time. But according to Tal Ben-Shahar, the New York Times bestselling author of Happier, the pursuit of perfect may actually be the number-one internal obstacle to finding happiness. Applying cutting-edge research in the field of positive psychology-the scientific principles taught in his wildly popular course at Harvard University-Ben-Shahar takes us off the impossible pursuit of perfection and directs us to the way to happiness, richness, and true fulfillment. He shows us the freedom derived from not trying to do it all right all the time and the real lessons that failure and painful emotions can teach us. He provides exercises for self reflection, meditations, and “Time-Ins” to help you rediscover what you really want out of life.

Abstract: "Imagine a world in which every single person on the planet is given free access to the sum of all human knowledge. That's what we're doing." -Jimmy Wales, founder of Wikipedia With more than 2,000,000 individual articles on everything from Aa! (a Japanese pop group) to Zzyzx, California, written by an army of volunteer contributors, Wikipedia is the number-eight site on the World Wide Web. Created (and corrected) by anyone with access to a computer, this impressive assemblage of knowledge is growing at an astonishing rate of more than 30,000,000 words a month. Now, for the first time, a Wikipedia insider tells the story of how it all happened-from the first glimmer of an idea to the global phenomenon it's become. Andrew Lih has been an administrator (a trusted user who is granted access to technical features) at Wikipedia for more than four years, as well as a regular host of the weekly Wikipedia podcast. In The Wikipedia Revolution, he details the site's inception in 2001, its evolution, and its remarkable growth, while also explaining its larger cultural repercussions. Wikipedia is not just a Web site; it's a global community of contributors who have banded together out of a shared passion for making knowledge free. The Wikipedia Revolution features a foreword by Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales and an afterword that is itself a Wikipedia creation.

Abstract: Bill Walsh was perhaps the most influential and successful coach in NFL history, transforming the San Francisco 49ers from the worst franchise in sports to a dynasty that won five Super Bowls. He is acclaimed not only for his strategic brilliance but also for his advanced approach to leadership. His teams sustained a consistency of excellence rarely seen in sports or anywhere else. Drawn from a series of deeply revealing conversations with coauthor Steve Jamison, The Score Takes Care of Itself offers Walsh's best leadership principles illustrated by anecdotes from his entire career. Additional insights and perspective are provided by his son Craig Walsh. A sample of Bill's wisdom: -Believe in people: No one will ever come back later and thank you for expecting too little of them. -Professionalism matters: There was no showboating allowed after touchdowns, no taunting of opponents, and no demonstrations to attract attention to oneself. -Keep a short enemies list: One enemy can do more damage than the good done by a hundred friends. -Leaders can't escape criticism: Ignore the undeserved. Learn from the deserved. Lick your wounds. Move on. It may hurt, but sometimes you can't have the last word. The book will delight football fans and guide the vast business audience eager to learn how Bill Walsh motivated individuals and crafted winning teams.

Abstract: When Hugh MacLeod was a struggling young copywriter living in a YMCA, he started to doodle on the backs of business cards while sitting at a bar. Those cartoons eventually led to a popular blog-gapingvoid.com-and a reputation for pithy insight and humor, in both words and pictures. MacLeod has opinions on everything from marketing to the meaning of life, but one of his main subjects is creativity. How do new ideas emerge in a cynical, risk-averse world? Where does inspiration come from? What does it take to make a living as a creative person? Ignore Everybody expands on MacLeod's sharpest insights, wittiest cartoons, and most useful advice. For example: -Selling out is harder than it looks. Diluting your product to make it more commercial will just make people like it less. -If your plan depends on you suddenly being "discovered" by some big shot, your plan will probably fail. Nobody suddenly discovers anything. Things are made slowly and in pain. -Don't try to stand out from the crowd; avoid crowds altogether. There's no point trying to do the same thing as 250,000 other young hopefuls, waiting for a miracle. All existing business models are wrong. Find a new one. -The idea doesn't have to be big. It just has to be yours. The sovereignty you have over your work will inspire far more people than the actual content ever will. After learning MacLeod's forty keys to creativity, you will be ready to unlock your own brilliance and unleash it on the world.

Abstract: What does it take to turn ideas into action? What are the elements of a perfect pitch? How do you win the war for talent? How do you establish a brand without bucks? These are some of the issues everyone faces when starting or revitalizing any undertaking, and Guy Kawasaki, former marketing maven of Apple Computer, provides the answers. The Art of the Start will give you the essential steps to launch great products, services, and companies-whether you are dreaming of starting the next Microsoft or a not-for-profit that's going to change the world. It also shows managers how to unleash entrepreneurial thinking at established companies, helping them foster the pluck and creativity that their businesses need to stay ahead of the pack. Kawasaki provides readers with GIST-Great Ideas for Starting Things-including his field-tested insider's techniques for bootstrapping, branding, networking, recruiting, pitching, rainmaking, and, most important in this fickle consumer climate, building buzz. At Apple, Kawasaki helped turn ordinary customers into fanatics. As founder and CEO of Garage Technology Ventures, he has tested his iconoclastic ideas on real-world start-ups. And as an irrepressible columnist for Forbes, he has honed his best thinking about The Art of the Start.

Abstract: Is your vital business information vulnerable to an attack from within? Growing dependence on IT may mean your business is becoming increasingly vulnerable to a sinister and unpleasant threat: the threat from within. How exposed is your company to the risk of a malicious attack by a discontented or psychologically unbalanced employee? What precautions have you taken to ensure that your IT systems cannot be manipulated for purposes of insider fraud? What steps do you need to take to prevent your IT systems from falling prey to organized crime through someone who has been planted within your firm or someone who is being threatened or bribed? Product designs and customer lists are not only useful information to you. They are also valuable information for your competitors. Employees who move to another company, or decide to set up in business on their own, may attempt to take some of this information with them. How will you stop this from happening? In this book, Clive Blackwell gets you up to speed on the key security problems that businesses are now facing as a result of the insider threat. Benefits to business include: Protect your company from sabotage. With the right strategy in place, you can restrict the opportunities open to disgruntled employees to disrupt your business operations through your IT system. Prevent major fraud. By employing dual control mechanisms for authorising large transactions, and by investigating accounting anomalies, you can protect your business from insider fraud. Prevent information theft. Use least privilege rules to limit data access, and set up a proper system of data management. You need to ensure that your employees cannot sell or exploit your proprietary information for their own purposes if you want to protect your competitiveness. As Dr Blackwell comments, "Systematic defence is required, as no single method can protect against employees with legitimate access to organizational resources."
