Die BHL revolutioniert die globale Forschung, indem sie freien, weltweiten Zugang zum Wissen über das Leben auf der Erde bietet. Die BHL hat ihren Sitz in den Smithsonian Libraries and Archives in Washington, D.C., und ist ein weltweites Konsortium von naturhistorischen und botanischen Forschungs- und Nationalbibliotheken, die zusammenarbeiten, um die naturhistorische Literatur in ihren Sammlungen zu digitalisieren und als Teil einer globalen "Biodiversitätsgemeinschaft" frei zugänglich zu machen. Das BHL-Portal bietet freien Zugang zu Hunderttausenden von Bänden mit über 60 Millionen Seiten aus dem 15. bis 21. Jahrhundert. Headquartered at the Smithsonian Libraries and Archives in Washington, D.C., BHL operates as a worldwide consortium of natural history, botanical, research, and national libraries working together by digitizing the natural history literature held in their collections and making it freely available for open access as part of a global “biodiversity community.”The BHL portal provides free access to hundreds of thousands of volumes, comprising over 60 million pages, from the 15th-21st centuries. The BHL consortium works with the international taxonomic community, publishers, bioinformaticians, and information technology professionals to develop tools and services to facilitate greater access, interoperability, and reuse of content and data. Anupama Rao's account challenges standard thinking on caste as either a vestige of precolonial society or an artifact of colonial governance. Focusing on western India in the colonial and postcolonial periods, she shines a light on South Asian historiography and on ongoing caste discrimination, to show how persons without rights came to possess them and how Dalit struggles led to the transformation of such terms of colonial liberalism.

The premise of this study is that it is much more - a form of social control, a political activity, a key to identity maintenance and transformation. Governments legislate and regulate naming; people fight to take, keep, or change their names. A name change can indicate subjugation or liberation, depending on the circumstances. But it always signifies a change in power relations. Since the late 1970s, the author has looked at naming and renaming, cross-culturally and internationally, with particular attention to the effects of colonisation and liberation. The experience of Inuit in Canada is an example of both. Colonisation is only part of the Nunavut experience. In all diesen Feldern tauchen Form, Macht und kulturelle Differenz als Motiv immer wieder auf, doch sie tun dies nicht in einer klar bestimmbaren Konfiguration. Vielmehr gehen Form, verstanden als innere Fügung und äußere Gestalt, Macht, verstanden als äußerliches restriktives Instrument und innerliches produktives Strukturierungsprinzip, und kulturelle Differenz, verstanden als identitätsstiftendes Moment und als identitätspolitische Ressource, in und durch ihre Polyvalenzen immer wieder neue Verbindungen miteinander ein. Die Texte dieses Bandes stammen aus verschiedenen Feldern ethnologischen Forschens, in denen sich die genannten Fragen zum Zusammenhang von Form, Macht und Differenz stellen. In den einzelnen Kapiteln wird je ein Begriff in seinem Verhältnis zu den beiden anderen in den Mittelpunkt gestellt. Entsprechend nähern sich die Beiträge in diesem Buch der Komplexität dieser Relationen aus verschiedenen regionalen und thematischen Perspektiven. Dieses Vorgehen spiegelt eine besondere ethnologische Perspektive wider, die weniger durch Begriffe wie Form, Macht und Differenz an und für sich ausgedrückt wird, als vielmehr durch die besondere Art, wie diese Begriffe in ihrer Relation zueinander beleuchtet werden. Dies beinhaltet die Anerkennung der Diversität kultureller und gesellschaftlicher Formen als Ausgangspunkt des verstehenden Erklärens menschlicher Praxis ebenso wie die empirische Begründung in der Feldforschung im Modus der teilnehmenden Beobachtung, die kulturvergleichende Betrachtung und die methodische Nutzung der Fremdheitserfahrung. Deshalb bildet Feldforschung als Praxis von Form, Macht und Differenz einen besonderen Schwerpunkt dieses Bandes.     Abstract: Quartiers « illégaux », « informels », « irréguliers » : les études sur l'urbanisme proche-oriental s'intéressent de plus en plus à ces lieux de la ville où l'habitat contrevient aux règles de la construction et de l'urbanisme. Ces désignations recouvrent en réalité une grande diversité dans les histoires et les enjeux socio-politiques présidant au développement de ces quartiers. Ce livre en étudie un exemple particulièrement révélateur. La banlieue sud-ouest de Beyrouth concentre la grande majorité des quartiers irréguliers du Liban : ceux-ci participent de la stigmatisation sociale de cette périphérie de la capitale, et les grands projets de reconstruction de l'après-guerre ont par ailleurs fait de l'irrégularité urbaine une question d'actualité. Les occupations de terrains pendant la guerre ou encore les extensions des camps de réfugiés sont liées à l'histoire récente du Liban. Mais en se plongeant dans l'histoire foncière des parcelles irrégulièrement construites et occupées, ce livre révèle que leur sort a également été marqué par des ambiguïtés juridiques remontant à l'époque ottomane ou au Mandat français. Cette profondeur historique remet en perspective le phénomène de l'irrégularité foncière. S'ajoutent des histoires particulières, celles de propriétaires plus ou moins bien placés pour protéger leur bien, qui montrent que les stratégies individuelles ou collectives sont souvent un facteur important pour expliquer la localisation et l'ampleur des irrégularités. Plan, réglementation, loi et norme sont des outils majeurs de l'urbanisme. lorsqu'il organise la ville. Aussi l'irrégularité, qu'elle soit définie en termes juridiques (illégalité) ou formels (désordre visible dans l'espace), fonctionne-t-elle comme un remarquable révélateur des tensions qui traversent l'aménagement urbain.     Abstract: In Zeiten transkultureller Bewegungen erweist sich die Literatur, die sich aus verschiedenen Gründen nicht in nationale Grenzen einpassen lässt, als ein zentrales Untersuchungsfeld: Kulturelle Veränderungen, die durch Migration von Menschen, Ideen, Waren und Sprachen entstehen, lassen sich hier auf eine umfassende Weise analysieren.In aktuellen Fallstudien untersuchen die Beiträge dieses Bandes unter anderem kulturelle Grenzziehungen in muslimischen bzw. türkischen Gemeinschaften und setzen sich dabei mit dem neuen »Zwang zur Kultur« auseinander. Daran anschließend wird der Begriff »Weltliteratur« auf seine Brauchbarkeit in diesen Kontexten untersucht, insbesondere im Hinblick auf nicht-europäische, etwa afrikanische Repräsentationsmodelle von Literatur.Einzelanalysen von Filmen und literarischen Texten zeigen, dass die so genannte Migrationsliteratur eine ästhetische Reflexion auf kulturelle Integration einerseits, aber auch auf verschiedene Formen von sozialer, individueller und sprachlicher Desintegration andererseits ist.Der Band wird ergänzt durch zwei Interviews mit Ilja Trojanow und Feridun Zaimoglu

    Abstract: Zusammenfassung: Participatory development is the most widespread form of development today, where participation implies that beneficiaries are empowered to take development into their own hands in addition to being encouraged to cooperate with the government to ensure sustainability of their initiatives. Participatory development has been deemed particularly suitable for socially excluded groups, following the formula: participation equals inclusion and social exclusion is the opposite of participation. In this dissertation I will show that participation in development projects can take various forms and bring about unexpected outcomes. This finding is based on two field studies of NGO-led social inclusion interventions, one focusing on a tribe called Sahariyas in India and the other on a Roma (i.e. Gypsy) community in Montenegro. I argue that on one hand, the beneficiaries desired to have access to services and to be included in "the project of modernity" but on the other, they were much more interested in improving the wellbeing of their group than in working toward social integration with the mainstream. This state of affairs calls attention to some limitations that can be found in these participatory development projects, one of them being the tendency among NGOs to prioritize representations of project success over the real impact of their project on the beneficiaries

Jahrhundert bildete sich unter dem Eindruck der Krise des Bürgertums und der Bürgerlichkeit ein neuer Jugendbegriff im deutschsprachigen Raum Mitteleuropas. Ein deutlicher Ausdruck des neuen Jugendideals waren die nun entstehende Jugendbewegung und die daraus hervorgehenden spezifischen Jugendkulturen, die bis heute fortwirken. 〈br /〉Dieser Band beschäftigt sich mit dem deutsch-jüdischen Ausdruck und der besonderen deutsch-jüdischen Interpretation der Jugendbewegungsformel. Der erste Teil ist theoretischen Fragen gewidmet, die im Zusammenhang mit dem Kernbegriff" Jugend"stehen und auch die Grundlage für die zeitgenössischen Debatten lieferten. Der zweite Teil beschäftigt sich mit historischen Hintergründen der deutschen Jugendbewegung und ihrer deutsch-jüdischen Pendants als Sonderfall, gefolgt von einem Beitrag, der die Brücke von Deutschland nach Palästina schlägt.     Abstract: After an explosion of conversions to Pentecostalism over the past three decades, tens of millions of Nigerians now claim that “Jesus is the answer.” But if Jesus is the answer, what is the question? What led to the movement’s dramatic rise and how can we make sense of its social and political significance? In this ambitiously interdisciplinary study, Ruth Marshall draws on years of fieldwork and grapples with a host of important thinkers—including Foucault, Agamben, Arendt, and Benjamin—to answer these questions. To account for the movement’s success, Marshall explores how Pentecostalism presents the experience of being born again as a chance for Nigerians to realize the promises of political and religious salvation made during the colonial and postcolonial eras. Her astute analysis of this religious trend sheds light on Nigeria’s contemporary politics, postcolonial statecraft, and the everyday struggles of ordinary citizens coping with poverty, corruption, and inequality. Pentecostalism’s rise is truly global, and Political Spiritualities persuasively argues that Nigeria is a key case in this phenomenon while calling for new ways of thinking about the place of religion in contemporary politics

    Abstract: What does it mean to call a place home? Who is allowed to become a member of a community? How do we create community? When can we say that we truly belong? The issues of place and belonging are the subject of this book. Moving from past to present, the author charts a journey in which she moves from place to place, from country to city and back again, only to end where she began in her native place, Kentucky. She explores a geography of the heart, focusing on issues of homeplace, of land, and land stewardship, linking the issues to global environmentalism and sustainability.     Abstract: Mittels einer Untersuchung von standardisierten Praktiken (Stadtrundgängen und Stadtrundfahrten) und Dispositiven (Stadtkarten, Reiseführer) fürs „Touren“ von Städten zeigt diese Dissertation, (1) wie die Stadt Berlin in ein virtuelles Objekt, nämlich, einen touristischen Zielort, transformiert wird, ( 2) wie diese Transformation nicht nur durch die Bewegung von Touristen im Raum und das Unterwegssein ermöglicht wird, sondern durch touristische Kommunikation über die Stadt, und (3) wie diese emergente touristische Stadt in einer multiplen und polykontexturalen städtischen Öffentlichkeit eingebettet ist, wo sie in verschiedenen Typen von Beziehung mit naheliegenden Inszenierungen der Stadt eintritt, wie die der Stadt-Marketing und der kollektiven Erinnerungspolitik. Drei weitere Aspekte sind zu erwähnen, die den gesamten Text subtil anregen. Die Dissertation stellt eine neue Theorie des Tourismus als Kommunikationsform, und nicht als Form des Reisens, auf; sie integriert die Luhmannsche Kommunikationstheorie mit der Akteur-Netzwerk-Theorie, und sie ist durchaus empirisch, basierend auf einer jahrlangen ethnographischen Untersuchung (2005-2006) von Praktiken und Dispositiven des „Tourens“ im zeitgenössischen Berlin.
    Abstract: Through the study of standardized practices (walking tours, bus-tours) and devices (maps, guidebooks) for touring cities, this dissertation shows (1) how the city of Berlin is transformed into a virtual object, namely, an urban destination, (2) how such transformation is enabled not simply by tourist movement in space and being away from ‚home‘, but by tourist communication on the city, and (3) how this emergent tourist city is embedded in a multiple and polycontextural urban public sphere, in which it enters into different types of relationship with neighbouring enactments of the city, such as those of city-marketing and collective memory. Subtly informing the whole text there are three aspects to be mentioned: the dissertation proposes a new theory of tourism as a form of communication, not of travel; it integrates Luhmann’s communication theory with actor-network theory; and it is throughout empirical, based on a year-long ethnographic study (2005-2006) of touring practices and devices in contemporary Berlin.
