    Abstract: Kaum eine gesellschaftliche Domäne scheint heute mehr zu existieren, in der man nicht partout erfolgreich zu sein hat. Woher rührt der Siegeszug dieser Leitorientierung? Welche sozialen Voraussetzungen und Folgen hat das zusehends allgegenwärtige Motto: Erfolg um jeden Preis?     Abstract: Die Globalisierung ist keineswegs als ein linearer und einheitlicher Prozess zu begreifen, wie dies in einer rein ökonomistischen Deutung oft angezeigt wird. Zwar finden zahlreiche Phänomene in der Globalisierung im Rahmen ihrer universalen Entgrenzung einen gemeinsamen Bezug, doch sind die Effekte regional und sektoral ganz unterschiedlich und oft auch widersprüchlich. Der systemische Widerspruch ist geradezu ein Grundsymptom der Globalisierung. Unter dem leitenden Aspekt einer «Gleichzeitigkeit des Ungleichen» werden in diesem Lehrbuch strukturelle Phänomene in insgesamt 14 Kapiteln vorgestellt und diskutiert. Dabei handelt es sich jeweils um staatsübergreifende Aspekte und Fragestellungen wie die internationale Migration, den modernen supranationalen Terrorismus, das weltweite demographische Wachstum, den Klimawandel, die Neuen Kriege, die Revolutionen im arabischen Raum und den Möglichkeiten, die durch die neuen Kommunikationstechnologien kognitiv bereit stehen. Originally prepared as the tenth-anniversary volume of the UNDP's Arab Human Development Report, Arab Human Development in the Twenty-first Century places empowerment at the center of human development in the Arab world, viewing it not only from the vantage point of a more equitable distribution of economic resources but also of fundamental legal, educational, and political reform. The ten chapters in this book follow closely this political economy framework. They look back at what Arab countries have achieved since the early 2000s and forward to what remains to be done to reach full development. Supported by a wealth of statistical material, they cover the rule of law, the evolution of media, the persistence of corruption, the draining of resources through armed conflict, the dominance and increase of poverty, the environment, and religious education.     Abstract: In 14 bislang unveröffentlichten Essays entwickelt der britische Soziologe Martin Albrow seine These vom 'Globalen Zeitalter', die er zuerst in den 1990er Jahren vortrug, um das Neue an unserer Epoche zu kennzeichnen. Anregungen von Max Weber, Emile Durkheim, Arnold Toynbee und Norbert Elias gehen dabei in einen globalen Diskurs ein, der einen neuen Zugang sucht zu bleibenden menschlichen Dilemmata im Zusammenhang mit Glaube, Gerechtigkeit und Verantwortung. Auch wenn der Autor die Überzeugung von der Unabwendbarkeit von Globalisierung und Amerikanisierung nicht teilt, vertritt er doch die Auffassung, der Entwurf unserer Zeit als von dem Phänomenen der Globalisierung geprägt beinhalte die Notwendigkeit einer kollektiven Antwort auf die Herausforderungen, die sich der Menschheit heute stellen. Die Hoffnung auf eine menschliche Zukunft beruht auf einer normativen Ordnung der globalen Gesellschaft, einer Weltregierung, die es den disparaten lokalen, nationalen und globalen Kulturen erlaubt, zu koexistieren und zu prosperieren.
    Abstract: In 14 previously unpublished essays British sociologist Martin Albrow develops the Global Age thesis that he first proposed in the 90s to capture the novelty of our own epoch. He absorbs insights from Max Weber, Emile Durkheim, Arnold Toynbee and Norbert Elias into a global discourse that shapes new approaches to abiding human dilemmas of faith, justice and responsibility. Even in resisting the idea that globalization and Americanization are inevitable he argues that framing our time as global promotes a collective response to the challenges facing humankind. The hope for a human future depends on a normative ordering of global society, on global governance that allows local, national and global cultures to co-exist and thrive.

This book introduces the discussion about youth bulge into social anthropology using Tajikistan, a post-Soviet country that experienced civil war in the 1990s, which is in the middle of such a demographic transition. Sophie Roche develops a social anthropological approach to analyze demographic and political dynamics, and suggests a new way of thinking about social change in youth bulge societies.

    Abstract: "This unique work analyzes the crisis in modern society, building on the ideas of the Frankfurt School thinkers. Emphasizing social evolution and learning processes, it argues that crisis is mediated by social class conflicts and collective learning, the results of which are embodied in constitutional and public law. First, the work outlines a new categorical framework of critical theory in which it is conceived as a theory of crisis. It shows that the Marxist focus on economy and on class struggle is too narrow to deal with the range of social conflicts within modern society, and posits that a crisis of legitimization is at the core of all crises.     Abstract: The rate of social change has speeded up in the last three decades, but how do we explain this? This volume ventures what the generative mechanism is that produces such rapid change and discusses how this differs from late Modernity. Contributors examine if an intensification of morphogenesis (positive feedback that results in a change in social form) and a corresponding reduction in morphostasis (negative feedback that restores or reproduces the form of the social order) best captures the process involved.  This volume resists proclaiming a new social formation as so many books written by empiricists have done by extrapolating from empirical data.  Until we can convincingly demonstrate that a new generative mechanism is at work, it is premature to argue what accounts for the global changes that are taking place and where they will lead. More concisely we seek to answer the question whether or not current social change can be regarded as social morphogenesis. Only then, in the next volumes will the same team of authors be able to remove the question mark

Das Buch ist für den Bereich der politischen Bildung konzipiert, im Rahmen der Bundeszentrale für politische Bildung (bpb, dort auch online: http://www.bpb.de/sozialkunde verfügbar). Daher werden nicht nur gesellschaftliche Themen und Entwicklungen (z.B. Bevölkerung, Migration, Familie, soziale Ungleichheit), sondern auch politische Themen wie Regierungssystem, Wirtschaftspolitik, Wohlfahrtsstaat, EU behandelt. Die Beiträge sind nicht didaktisch aufbereitet, aber sorgfältig in verständlichem Stil formuliert und z.T. mit Illustrationen versehen. Das Buch stellt eine gute Ergänzung zum periodisch von bpb und Statistischem Bundesamt herausgegebenen Datenreport (kostenlos bestell- und herunterladbar von der Homepage beider Institutionen) dar, der den gleichen Themenbereich anhand von Statistiken darstellt und interpretiert. Yet many Americans are skeptical of this fundamental social transformation. The failure of recognition is related to the remnants of the previous race-based society. Recognizing the advent of a post-racial society is not to gainsay recurrent racial incidents or a denial of the socio-economic gap between the races. Using the findings of historians and social scientists, this book outlines why the construction and deconstruction of the race-based society was such a difficult and daunting enterprise. Starting from the nation's inception, Rich examines how the nation elites used racial language, separate schools, and the media to divide Americans. After World War II, the nation used U.S. Supreme Court rulings and the Congressional passage of Civil Rights laws to dismantle the institutional support for racial segregation and discrimination. The black Civil Rights Movement facilitated and consolidated the movement toward socio-political inclusion of African Americans. Rich alerts the reader to the unprecedented progress made and why the forces of the new global economy demand that we move faster to make society more inclusive.     Abstract: The rate of social change has speeded up in the last three decades, but how do we explain this? This volume ventures what the generative mechanism is that produces such rapid change and discusses how this differs from late Modernity. Contributors examine if an intensification of morphogenesis (positive feedback that results in a change in social form) and a corresponding reduction in morphostasis (negative feedback that restores or reproduces the form of the social order) best captures the process involved. This volume resists proclaiming a new social formation as so many books written by empiricists have done by extrapolating from empirical data. Until we can convincingly demonstrate that a new generative mechanism is at work, it is premature to argue what accounts for the global changes that are taking place and where they will lead. More concisely we seek to answer the question whether or not current social change can be regarded as social morphogenesis. Only then, in the next volumes will the same team of authors be able to remove the question mark

    Abstract: "For Michel Serres, economic crises are earthquakes caused by societal tectonic plates. The current crisis erupted because of the widening discrepancy between major social changes and institutions that have remained the same since WWII.Serres, one of the first to bring nature into the political, writes, "To destroy, kill, exploit is worthless. In the long run, it means destroying ourselves." At a time when the world population has grown so much that it is exhausting natural resources and the environment, we need to rethink cultural, social, and political dynamics. Serres argues that geopolitics and economics will no longer be a two-player game, between West and East, for example, but a three-player one, in which is Earth will be the third partner.     Abstract: Main description: Das Buch hinterfragt die These, dass Demokratisierungen in der islamischen Welt per se zu Geschlechtergerechtigkeit führen, und zeigt, welche politischen, religiösen und kulturellen Faktoren bei Transformationen von Geschlechterordnungen bedeutsam werden. Dabei werden die arabischen Staaten, in denen die »Arabellion« erfolgreich war (Ägypten, Tunesien), mit anderen verglichen, in denen die Machtverhältnisse nicht (Saudi-Arabien, Kuwait, Syrien) oder nur minimal verändert wurden (Jemen, Jordanien). In die Untersuchung werden auch Länder einbezogen, in denen ausländische Interventionen einen Regimewechsel einleiteten (Irak, Afghanistan), in denen eine Revolution bereits mehr als ein Jahrzehnt zurückliegt (Indonesien), erfolglos war (Iran) oder gar nicht stattfand, da das Regime bereits demokratisch verfasst ist (Indien)
