    Abstract: Das Konzept »transnationaler Räume« hat der Migrationssoziologie neue Impulse gegeben. Wenig Beachtung hingegen fand bisher die Pendelmigration deutsch-polnischer Doppelstaatler aus Oberschlesien - einer Region, die aus der ehemaligen Peripherie Deutschlands wie Polens inzwischen mitten in ein vereintes Europa gerückt ist.Dabei macht die wechselvolle Geschichte dieser historischen Grenzregion sie geradezu zu einem Paradebeispiel für das Phänomen »Transnationalismus«. Die hier analysierten Lebensgeschichten ihrer Einwohner_innen werfen Schlaglichter auf europäische Diskurse über soziale und politische Partizipation sowie auf individuelle und kollektive Identitätsbildung.

    Abstract: Was ist ein gutes Leben? Und vor allem: Wo und auf welche Weise lässt es sich gut leben? Diese Fragen untersucht Julia Rössel am Beispiel von Zugezogenen in der Uckermark.     Abstract: Der deutsch- und englischsprachige Band enthält neun Essays von bekannten KanadistInnen aus Österreich, Deutschland und Kanada, die sich mit Immigration nach und Integration in Nordamerika beschäftigen: Wie wird dieses aktuelle Problem in Kanada bewältigt? Könnte das offiziell multikulturelle Kanada für Länder wie Österreich und Frankreich ein Muster sein? Neben der gelungenen Integration, die sich in Romanen von selbst nach Kanada eingewanderten ErzählerInnen spiegelt, belegen ethnische Autobiographien die früher auch in Kanada häufigen Probleme. Das Spannungsverhältnis beim transkulturellen Übergang erscheint als mögliche Inspirationsquelle, wobei Schriftsteller aus der Karibik ergiebige Untersuchungsobjekte sind. Die Einwanderung aus Österreich kommt ebenso zur Sprache wie die spezifische Auseinandersetzung mit der Immigration in Quebec, wo das Konzept des Interkulturalismus dominiert, sowie das Schicksal von Millionen illegaler Einwanderer in den USA. The volume comprises nine essays by prominent Canadianists from Austria, Germany and Canada who investigate in comparative fashion the problems of emigration / immigration to and integration in North America and some European countries, especially Austria and France. They inquire how this challenge has been met in Canada since the official adoption of multiculturalism and reflect on the possibility of Canada serving as a model for Europe. While contemporary novels by immigrants to Canada provide evidence of successful integration, ethnic autobiographies remind us of the existence of problems and prejudices in former times. The tensions experienced in the course of a transcultural transfer are shown to be a potential source of inspiration, with authors of Caribbean background providing fruitful examples. The waves of immigration from Austria are also described as is the specific approach to the challenge of immigration in the province of Quebec, through the adoption of the concept of interculturalism. Both the problems linked to immigration in France and the issue of the millions of undocumented immigrants from Latin America in the USA are considered.

    Abstract: Internationale Migration und die zunehmende Diversität der Bevölkerung sind hochaktuelle gesellschaftspolitische Themen in Deutschland. Die Herausforderungen vor Ort sind in den Kommunen und Wohnquartieren spür- und sichtbar. Insbesondere in den Lebensbereichen Arbeiten, Wohnen und Bildung stellt sich die Frage, wie Integration gelingen kann. Der vorliegende Sammelband setzt sich umfassend mit den Themen Migration und Migrationspolitik, Segregation und Integration, mit Konzepten wie Hybridität, diversity und Transkulturalität im integrationstheoretischen Diskurs auseinander. Er bleibt jedoch nicht auf der theoretisch-konzeptionellen Ebene, sondern zeigt Handlungsmöglichkeiten in der Praxis auf. Empirische Fallstudien wie z.B. zur Segregation von Migrant(inn)en in Großstädten, zu Wohnstandortentscheidungen türkeistämmiger Eigentümer(innen) der zweiten Generation und zu Maßnahmen städtischer Integrationspolitik in Europa zeigen, vor welchen Herausforderungen Politik und Gesellschaft stehen. Die Autor(inn)en setzen sich kritisch mit der gegenwärtigen Forschungspraxis und Integrationspolitik auseinander. Und sie geben Beispiele für eine verbesserte Integration in den Kommunen, im Wohnquartier, im Bildungssystem, in der Wohnungswirtschaft und der Ökonomie. Theoretische Analysen werden mit Handlungsanweisungen für Planung und Politik verbunden.
    Abstract: International migration and the increasing diversity of the population are highly topical social-political issues in Germany. Local challenges in municipalities and residential areas are tangible and visible. The question as to how integration can be successful is particularly pressing in the spheres of work, housing and education. This edited volume comprehensively addresses the themes migration and migration policy, segregation and integration, and considers concepts such as hybridity, diversity and transculturality in integration theory discourse. However, discussion is not restricted to the theoretical-conceptual level but includes illustration of possible courses of action in practice. Empirical case studies on, for example, the segregation of migrants in large cities, the neighbourhood choice of second-generation Turkish-origin homeowners and urban integration policy measures in Europe, reveal the challenges faced by politics and society. The authors critically review current research practice and integration policy. They provide examples of improved integration in municipalities, residential areas, the education system, the housing market and the economy. Theoretical analyses are linked to planning and policy recommendations.

Man erfährt, was es mit dem Myotragus, einer heute ausgestorbenen balearischen Ziegenart auf sich hat, wie die Inseln geologisch entstanden sind und wie sich Fauna und Flora entwickelt haben. Zusammen mit 100 Abbildungen stellt dieses Buch einen wertvollen Reisebegleiter für alle dar, die mehr als nur die Strände Mallorcas und Menorcas besuchen wollen.     Abstract: Examining the rapid transition in Iran from a modernizing, westernizing, secularizing monarchy (1941-79) to a hard-line, conservative, clergy-run Islamic republic (1979-), this book focuses on the ways this process has impacted the Qashqa'i-a rural, nomadic, tribally organized, Turkish-speaking, ethnic minority of a million and a half people who are dispersed across the southern Zagros Mountains.Analysing the relationship between the tribal polity and each of the two regimes, the book goes on to explain the resilience of the people's tribal organizations, kinship networks, and politicized ethnolinguistic identities to demonstrate how these structures and ideologies offered the Qashqa'i a way to confront the pressures emanating from the two central governments. Existing scholarly works on politics in Iran rarely consider Iranian society outside the capital of Tehran and beyond the reach of the details of national politics. Local-level studies on Iran-accounts of the ways people actually lived-are now rare, especially after the revolution. Based on long-term anthropological research, Nomads in Postrevolutionary Iran provides a unique insight into how national-level issues relate to the local level and will be of interest to scholars and researchers in Anthropolgy, Iranian Studies and Middle Eastern Studies.

    Abstract: Central issues in global energy are discussed through interdisciplinary dialogue between experts from both North America and Europe with overview from historical, political, and socio-cultural perspectives, outlining the technology and policy issues facing the development of major conventional and renewable energy sources.We are facing a global energy crisis caused by world population growth, an escalating increase in demand, and continued dependence on fossil-based fuels for generation. It is widely accepted that increases in greenhouse gas concentration levels, if not reversed, will result in major changes to world climate with consequential effects on our society and economy. This is just the kind of intractable problem that Purdue University’s Global Policy Research Institute seeks to address in the Purdue Studies in Public Policy series by promoting the engagement between policy makers and experts in fields such as engineering and technology.Major steps forward in the development and use of technology are required. In order to achieve solutions of the required scale and magnitude within a limited timeline, it is essential that engineers be not only technologically-adept but also aware of the wider social and political issues that policy-makers face. Likewise, it is also imperative that policy makers liaise closely with the academic community in order to realize advances. This book is designed to bridge the gap between these two groups, with a particular emphasis on educating the socially-conscious engineers and technologists of the future.In this accessibly-written volume, central issues in global energy are discussed through interdisciplinary dialogue between experts from both North America and Europe. The first section provides an overview of the nature of the global energy crisis approached from historical, political, and sociocultural perspectives. In the second section, expert contributors outline the technology and policy issues facing the development of major conventional and renewable energy sources. The third and final section explores policy and technology challenges and opportunities in the distribution and consumption of energy, in sectors such as transportation and the built environment.     Abstract: Earth now is dominated by both biogeophysical and anthropogenic processes, as represented in these two images from a simulation of aerosols. Dust (red) from the Sahara sweeps west across the Atlantic Ocean. Sea salt (blue) rises into the atmosphere from winds over the North Atlantic and from a tropical cyclone in the Indian Ocean. Organic and black carbon (green) from biomass burning is notable over the Amazon and Southeast Asia. Plumes of sulfate (white) from fossil fuel burning are particularly prominent over northeastern North America and East Asia. If present trends of dust emissions and fossil fuel burning continues in what we call the Anthropocene epoch, then we could experience high atmospheric CO2 levels leading to unusual warming rarely experienced in Earth's history. This book focuses on human influences on land, ocean, and the atmosphere, to determine if human activities are operating within or beyond the safe zones of our planet's biological, chemical, and physical systems.

    Abstract: Wie verandern sich gesellschaftliche Raumordnungen im Zuge der Okologisierung, Mediatisierung, Globalisierung und Technisierung der Weltverhaltnisse Welche Moglichkeiten der (Neu-)Gestaltung gesellschaftlicher Raumordnungen bestehen, wenn deutlich wird, dass dabei mit einem vielfach besiedelten Außen zu rechnen ist, das von der Gesellschaft aus nicht vollstandig kontrolliert werden kann Der vorliegende Band widmet sich diesen Fragen im Horizont des Wissenschaftsprogramms Systemtheorie. Gezeigt wird, dass eine gesellschaftliche Kontrolle des Raums nur auf der Basis der sozialen Konstruktion von Raum als eine fortlaufende Sequenz von Kontrollversuchen zu denken ist, das heißt als ein standiges Uberprufen und Nachjustieren bestehender Raumordnungen. Weil die Systemtheorie bei dieser Auseinandersetzung mit den Außenbeziehungen der Gesellschaft an ihre konzeptionellen Grenzen stoßt, werden die Theoriebezuge in verschiedenen Beitragen erweitert. Im Ergebnis zeichnen sich Perspektiven einer allgemeinen Okologie im Sinne eines Denkens in Nachbarschaften.

    Abstract: This multi-disciplinary book provides practical solutions for safeguarding the sustainability of the urban water environment. Firstly, the importance of the urban water environment is highlighted and the major problems urban water bodies face and strategies to safeguard the water environment are explored. Secondly, the diversity of pollutants entering the water environment through stormwater runoff are discussed and modelling approaches for factoring in climate change and future urban and transport scenarios are proposed. Thirdly, by linking the concepts of sustainable urban ecosystems and sustainable urban and transport development, capabilities of two urban sustainability assessment models are demonstrated. To achieve sustainability of the urban water environment and future viability of treatment strategies, a framework that supports their adaptation to future challenges is required. A conceptual framework which involves a decision making cycle integrating best management practices and best planning practices that can be adopted to ensure future adaptation is also presented. Taking a holistic approach and with practical applications for modelling and predictions, Sustainable Urban Water Environment will strongly appeal to postgraduate students, practitioners and researchers in environmental science, environmental policy and urban transport planning.
