Abstract: This book offers a thematic introduction to American ethnic history which provides an overview of key historiographical debates. It provides a new framework for examining and comprehending the varied historical experiences of ethnic groups in the United States. Thematically organized and comparative in outlook, it explores how historians have grappled with questions that bear upon a key aspect of the American experience: ethnicity. How did the United States come to have such an ethnically diverse population? What contribution, if any, has this ethnic diversity made to the shaping of American culture and institutions? How easily and at what levels have ethnic and racial minorities been incorporated, if at all, into the social and economic structures of the United States? Has incorporation been a uniform process or has it varied from group to group? This is both an authoritative introduction to the field of American ethnic history and a valuable reference tool for secondary scholoars
Description / Table of Contents: The origins and nature of ethnic identityThe making of American ethnic diversity -- Ethnic adaptation -- Ethnicity and the American creed -- Ethnic incorporation -- Ethnic collective action -- Confronting challenges to ethnic allegiance.

Abstract: What counts as ethnography and what counts as good ethnographic methodology are both highly contested. This volume brings together chapters presenting a diversity of views on some of the current debates and developments in the field. It does not try to present a single coherent view but, through its heterogeneity, illustrates the strength and impact of debate. The topics discussed include participant observation, research roles in fieldwork, access to places and people in research, ethical issues concerning anonymity and intimacy in research, generalization in ethnography, the use of video, developing stronger criteria for autoethnography, and the use of ethnography as a contribution to the generation and modification of indicators. Together the collection illustrates the strength and vitality of ethnography

Abstract: Native Americans and the Environment brings together an interdisciplinary group of prominent scholars whose works continue and complicate the conversations that Shepard Krech started in The Ecological Indian . Hailed as a masterful synthesis and yet assailed as a problematic political tract, Shepard Krechs work prompted significant discussions in scholarly communities and among Native Americans

Abstract: Since the early 1990s, feminists in India have been rallying against integrating. the Indian economy into the world market, perceiving it as a phenomenon which. will lead to increased feminisation of poverty and the commodification of women. This anthology explores the impact of globalisation on Indian women and the struggle. for gender equality. Since urban India has taken the initial benefit and brunt. of globalisation, the focus here is on urban women, particularly from the educated. middle class. The two dozen essays in this book offer insights into:. - gender identity, gender relations an

Abstract: This volume ponders the cultures that generated the bulk of our global contamination legacy. Insight is sought into its creation and an understanding of differences in how it is being addressed. Hopefully the illumination of the problem will contribute to a better understanding of the constraining conditions and will help guide us in meeting the twin challenges created by the legacy of contamination: how to stop it and how to address what we already have done.Section one focuses on the psycho-social dynamics of chemical contamination. Section two deals with nuclear events, both accidents, but

Abstract: The political activism of the American counterculture during the 1960s remains a subject blighted by misconceptions and stereotypes. To many, the political thought of the 1960s is synonymous with widespread drug abuse, failed social experiments, and general irresponsibility. Despite sustained public interest, few remember that many of the freedoms and rights Americans enjoy today are the direct result of those who defiantly challenged the established order during this tumultuous period. The period frightened both mainstream and elite Americans and still does. In Generation on Fire, both well-k

Abstract: This book critiques literary and cultural representations of the Indian family to explore the manner in which the family and its structure are in transition. The various papers explore (and expose) how the Indian family, whether in India or abroad, needs to be redefined in the current context--in this age of rapid industrialization, globalization (both cultural and economic) and the emergence of new technologies. The family is viewed from a variety of perspectives, as represented in film, theatre and literature--both in English and in the vernacular. Including reflective pieces by several well-k

Abstract: In 2004, Michael Burawoy, speaking as president of the American Sociological Association, generated far-reaching controversy when he issued an ambitious and impassioned call for a "public sociology." Burawoy argued that sociology should speak beyond the university. This volume debates the perils and the potentials of Burawoy's challenge

Abstract: Many of us belong to communities that have been scarred by terrible calamities. And many of us come from families that have suffered grievous losses. How we reflect on these legacies of loss and the ways they inform each other are the questions Laura Levitt takes up in this provocative and passionate book. An American Jew whose family was not directly affected by the Holocaust, Levitt grapples with the challenges of contending with ordinary Jewish loss. She suggests that although the memory of the Holocaust may seem to overshadow all other kinds of loss for American Jews, it can also open up p

Abstract: "In this book at why some determinedly pursue higher literacy against all expectations and predictions, Donna Dunbar-Odom explores the complex relationships people have with literacy, paying particular attention to the relationship between literacy and class. She shares the personal and often poignant literacy narratives of writers, academics, and her own students to reveal a great deal about what motivates desire for higher literacy, as well as what gets in the way. Bringing together these reflections with current literacy, composition, and class theories, Dunbar-Odom provides a better understanding of how to tap that desire in writing classrooms. Ultimately, the author argues that teachers need to focus less attention on how students should read and more on why they might want to."--Jacket

Abstract: What happens when anthropologists lose themselves during fieldwork while attempting to understand divergent cultures? When they stray from rigorous agendas and are forced to confront radically unexpected or unexplained experiences? In "Extraordinary Anthropology" leading ethnographers from across the globe discuss the importance of the deeply personal and emotionally volatile "ecstatic" side of fieldwork. Anthropologists who have worked in communities in Central America, North America, Australia, Africa, and Asia share their intimate experiences of tranformations in the field through details of significant dreams, haunting visions, and their own conflicting emotional tensions. Their experiences demonstrate the necessary fluidity of research agendas, the value of going beyond an accepted (and safe) cultural and academic vantage point, and the inevitability of wrestling with tension and unhappiness when faced with irreconcilable cultural and psychological dichotomies. The contributors explore ways in which conventional research methods can be adapted to creatively engage the intellectual, ethical, and practical dimensions of these dislocations and capitalize on them. Unsettling and revealing, "Extraordinary Anthropology" will spark debate and reflection among anthropologists for years to come

Abstract: "Immortal Austria was the title of a theatrical pageant devised by Austrian refugees in wartime London. This volume contains various studies of the representations of their homeland in the cultural production of Austrian exiles; including those projected by emigres working in the British film industry, those portrayed in the historical novel and in the literary works of such notable authors as Stefan Zweig, Elias Canetti and Robert Neumann. It opens with a survey of the make-up of the Austrian exile community and concludes with a study of attitudes to returning exiles, as reflected in the post-war literary journals. The volumes thus offers students and teachers a vital cultural link, between the pre-1934 Austria of the First Republic and the post-1945 Austria of the Second."--BOOK JACKET

Abstract: Advances in the Psychology of Justice and Affect presents a collection of chapters written by leading scholars attempting to illuminate the developing trends in explaining and understanding the role that affect plays in justice and vice versa. The book comes at a particular fitting time as it is recognized that justice is in the eye of the beholder, but, unfortunately clear theoretical perspectives have not been clearly outlined yet. This book addresses this need by presenting a variety of perspectives advocating the further integration between both fields and how this may be achieved. Moreover, the book also provides a discussion of what we know as yet and where this integrative field should be going. The book is divided in three parts discussing the nature of justice and affect, justice, morality and affect, and justice and affect at work. The market for this book is students, researchers in social psychology, organizational behavior and management, behavioral economics, philosophy, and other related social sciences fields. Graduate students and upper level undergraduates can make use of the book as a supplementary text

Abstract: The Canadian census taken in 1901 has surprising things to say about the family as a social grouping and cultural construct at the turn of the twentieth century. Although the nuclear-family household was the most frequent type of household, family was not a singular form or structure at all; rather, it was a fluid micro-social community through which people lived and moved. There was no one "traditional" family, but rather many types of families and households, each with its own history. In Household Counts, editors Eric W. Sager and Peter Baskerville bring together an impressive array of scholars to explore the demographic context of families in Canada using the 1901 census. Split into five sections, the collection covers such topics as family demography, urban families, the young and old, family and social history, and smaller groups as well. The remarkable plasticity of family and household that Household Counts reveals is of critical importance to our understanding of nation-building in Canada. This collection not only makes an important contribution to family history, but also to the widening intellectual exploration of historical censuses

Abstract: `I wish the Handbook of Ethnography had been available to me as a fledgling ethnographer. I would recommend it for any graduate student who contemplates a career in the field. Likewise for experienced ethnographers who would like the equivalent of a world atlas to help pinpoint their own locations in the field, the Handbook of Ethnography is it' - Journal of Contemporary Ethnography `This wonderful Handbook establishes the central, and complex place ethnography now occupies in the human disciplines. All future work will begin here' - Norman K Denzin
Abstract: Ethnography is one of the chief research methods in sociology, anthropology and other cognate disciplines in the social sciences. This is a landmark work in the field, which draws on the expertise of an internationally renowned group of interdisicplinary scholars. The 〈b〉Handbook of Ethnography〈/b〉 provides readers with a one-stop critical guide to the past, present and future of ethnography. It will quickly establish itself as the ethnographer's bible

Abstract: Managing diversity has become a primary concern of top U.S. corporations. In this paper, the authors develop a fact-based approach to modeling diversity management. They use the model to determine whether diversity-friendly corporations really do stand out from other companies by analyzing the strategies pursued by 14 large U.S. companies recognized for their diversity or human resource (HR) achievements. Finally, to understand whether best practices alone make a company diversity-friendly, they compare a number of characteristics of best diversity companies, best HR companies, and other companies, using quantitative and qualitative methods. They find that firms recognized for diversity are distinguished by a core set of motives and practices that resemble those presented in the best-practices literature, but that best practices per se may not enable a company to achieve a high level of diversity. Contextual factors, such as industry affiliation and company size, may be as significant as strategic factors in influencing the extent of a company's diversity

Abstract: A set of creative writers here responds to the call for literature that addresses who we are by understanding where we are-where, for each of them, being somehow part of the academy. Their personal essays delineate the diverse, sometimes unexpected roles of place in shaping them, as writers and teachers in varied environments, through unique experiences and distinctive worldviews-in reconfiguring their conjunctions of identity and setting, here, there, everywhere, and in between. Offering creative comments on place, identity, and academic work are authors Charles Bergman, Mary Clearman Blew, Jayne Brim Box, Jeffrey M. Buchanan, Norma Elia Cantú, Katherine Fischer, Kathryn T. Abstract: The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) is carrying out its congressional mandate to establish a patient-safety research and development initiative to help health care providers reduce medical errors and improve patient safety. In September 2003, AHRQ entered into a four-year contract with the RAND Corporation to serve as the Patient Safety Evaluation Center for its patient safety initiative. The evaluation center is responsible for performing a longitudinal evaluation of the full scope of AHRQ's patient safety activities and for providing regular feedback to support the continuing improvement of this initiative over the four-year project period. This report covers the period October 2003 through September 2004. It is the second of what will be four annual reports prepared by RAND during the formative evaluation. It builds on the preceding evaluation report, which covers the period October 2002 through September 2003. This report provides an update on the policy context that frames the AHRQ patient safety initiative, documents the evolution and current status of the priorities and activities being undertaken in the initiative, and lays out a framework and possible measures for evaluating the effects of the initiative on patient outcomes and stakeholders other than patients. Implications of the evaluation findings are discussed with respect to future AHRQ policy, programming, and research, and suggestions are presented for strengthening AHRQ activities as the initiative moves forward. The content and format of each report are designed to provide a stable structure for the longitudinal evaluation; the results of each year's assessment contribute to a cumulative record of the initiative's evolution. The contents of this report will be of interest to national and state policymakers, health care organizations and clinical practitioners, patient-advocacy organizations, health researchers, and others with responsibilities for ensuring that patients are not harmed by the health care they receive

Abstract: This compilation of Dale Morgan's historical work on Indians in the Intermountain West focuses primarily on the Shoshone who lived near the Oregon and California trails. Three connected works by Morgan are included: First is his classic article on the history of the Utah Superintendency of Indian Affairs. This is followed by an important set of government reports and correspondence from the National Archives concerning the Eastern Shoshone and their leader Washakie. Morgan heavily annotated these for serial publication in the Annals of Wyoming. He also wrote a previously unpublished history of early relations among the Western Shoshone, emigrants, and the government along the California Trail. Morgan biographer Richard L. Saunders introduced, edited, and further annotated this collection. His introduction includes an intellectual biography of Morgan that focuses on the place of the anthologized pieces in Morgan's corpus. Gregory E. Smoak, a leading historian of the Shoshone, contributed an ethnohistorical essay as additional context for Morgan's work
