Abstract: In the first half of the nineteenth century the main employment open to young women in Britain was in teaching, dressmaking, textile manufacture and domestic service. After 1850, however, young women began to enter previously all-male areas like medicine, pharmacy, librarianship, the civil service, clerical work and hairdressing, or areas previously restricted to older women like nursing, retail work and primary school teaching. This book examines the reasons for this change.

Abstract: "This anthology reconsiders the social, political and intellectual meanings of multiculturalism in the West, particularly in Britain. In introducing a new conceptual language for thinking about it, the volume stresses the importance of distinguishing between the multicultural as a signifier of the unsettled meanings of cultural differences, and multiculturalism as the signifier of attempts to 'fix' their meaning in national imaginaries. The book also casts the debates about multiculturalism in the contexts of globalization, post-colonialism and what Barnor Hesse calls 'multicultural transruptions' - which he sees as resurgent, irrepressible multicultural issues which unsettle the racialized meanings of social norms and the cultural habits of national politics."--BOOK JACKET

Abstract: The E-mail Virus Protection Handbook is organised around specific e-mail clients, server environments, and anti-virus software. The first eight chapters are useful to both users and network professionals; later chapters deal with topics relevant mostly to professionals with an emphasis on how to use e-mail filtering software to monitor all incoming documents for malicious behaviour. In addition, the handbook shows how to scan content and counter email address forgery attacks. A chapter on mobile code applications, which use Java applets and Active X controls to infect email and, ultimately, other applications and whole systems is presented. The book covers spamming and spoofing: Spam is the practice of sending unsolicited email to users. One spam attack can bring down an entire enterprise email system by sending thousands of bogus messages or "mailbombing," which can overload servers. Email spoofing means that users receive messages that appear to have originated from one user, but in actuality were sent from another user. Email spoofing can be used to trick users into sending sensitive information, such as passwords or account numbers, back to the spoofer. Highly topical! Recent events such as the LoveBug virus means the demand for security solutions has never been higher Focuses on specific safeguards and solutions that are readily available to users

Abstract: As more and more equipment is interface or'bus' driven, either by the use of controllers or directly from PCs, the question of which bus to use is becoming increasingly important both in industry and in the office. 'Computer Busses' has been designed to help choose the best type of bus for the particular application. There are several books which cover individual busses, but none which provide a complete guide to computer busses. The author provides a basic theory of busses and draws examples and applications from real bus case studies. Busses are analysed using from a top-down approach, helping the undergraduate electrical or computer engineer to chose the right type of bus for their particular application. This book is essential reading for students of software engineering and electronic design, as well as for those working in disciplines such as production engineering or process control. It will also be a handy reference book for professional engineers, systems designers, consultants and those working in technical support. Provides a complete guide to computer busses Contains application-specific programme examples Plenty of real-life case studies

Abstract: A hands-on guide to finding the sources of electromagnetic interference and then fixing the problems. Includes basic theory of EMI as well as detailed explanations of why this problem is becoming more serious as the international scope of the communications and electronics industries grow. This book is not a textbook, but rather a handbook that will become a constant source of reference for anyone who runs into trouble with EMI. Includes chapters on grounding, circuit shielding and filtering, preventing EMI in circuit design, as well as EMI sources such as power lines, transmitters, television, consumer electronics, telephones, automobiles, and the ever-frustrating mystery EMI. There are very few other books available even though EMI is constantly discussed and cursed. Most of the books on the market are about how to prevent EMI in circuit design or approaches to understanding the theory behind EMI. Though this information is important, especially to an engineering audience, these books hold no value at all to the technicians and hands-on practitioners in the fields of communications and servicing. These savvy professionals know that the book they are looking for and need is just not on the market. To get the information they need, this group is forced to read every magazine article they can find on the subject and rely on the advice of other professionals whether through technician groups or newsgroups. This book fills a void in the telecommunications and electronics industries by providing practical troubleshooting information. Addresses the technician's needs and interests Written by an eminent authority in the field Covers correction and prevention of problems with EMI

Abstract: Internetworking Protocol (IP) addresses are the unique numeric identifiers required of every device connected to the Internet. They allow for the precise routing of data across very complex worldwide internetworks. The rules for their format and use are governed by the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) of the The Internet SOCiety (ISOC). In response to the exponential increase in demand for new IP addresses, the IETF has finalized its revision on IP addressing as IP Version 6, also know as IPng (ng = Next Generation). Key hardware vendors such as Cisco and major Internet Service Providers such as America Online have already announced plans to migrate to IP Version 6. IP address allocation within an organization requires a lot of long-term planning. This timely publication addresses the administrator and engineer's need to know how IP 6 impacts their enterprise networks. Easy-to-read, light technical approach to cellular technology Ideal for companies planning a phased migration from IP 4 to IP 6 Timely publication: The IETF standard was finalized in early 1999 and will begin to be implemented in late 1999/2000. The current IP Version 4 address set will be exhausted by 2003 The book focuses on planning and configuring networks and devices for IP 6. Specifically, it will cover how to: Increase the IP address size from 32 bits to 128 bits; Support more levels of addressing hierarchy; Support an increased number of addressable nodes; Support simpler auto-configuration of addresses; Improve the scalability of multicast routing by adding a "scope" field to multicast addresses; Use a new "anycast address" to send a packet to any one of a group of nodes

Abstract: Multifunction devices combine the essentials of a fax machine, printer, scanner, and copier into one peripheral for small and home offices. As the market for this equipment grows, the need for skilled repair and maintenance increases. Unfortunately the service documentation supplied by the manufacturers is completely inadequate making the repair jobs even harder and more expensive. Marvin Hobbs teaches you how multifunction peripherals work in theory and in practice with lots of hands-on examples and important troubleshooting and repair tips you don't want to miss. This book fills a gap in the literature, and will be a welcome addition to the library of any technician or do-it-yourselfer. Written by a knowledgeable practitioner with inside industry information Fully covers the troubleshooting and repair of multifunction peripherals A must-have instructional and reference title for anyone who works with computer peripherals!

Abstract: Interfacing with C is about interfacing personal computers using C. Anyone who is interested in ports, transducer interfacing, analog to digital conversion, convolution, filters or digital/analog conversion will benefit from reading Interfacing with C. Students will also find this a practical introduction to real-time programming with a generous collection of tried and tested programs. The pace of the book is such that the reader is encouraged to run the programs and experiment with C. The principles precede the applications in most cases in an attempt to provide genuine understanding and encourage further development. Readers will gain much from the hands-on experience the authors' approach provides, an approach designed to enable readers to climb steep learning curves with the minimum amount of assistance. The many programs included in the text provide the essential hands-on experience. Some of the programs inevitably become rather lengthy, so the source code used is available as a free download from the Newnes website. The aim of the book, however, is to give the reader enough confidence to rewrite and improve these programs. In the second edition Mike James has thoroughly updated all aspects relating to software, operating systems and graphical interfaces. He has also increased the scope of the book to include current forms of C++. Material on data acquisition has been thoroughly updated and the section on peripherals increased. A disk containing the source code for the listings in the book is available from 'Electronics World' magazine, tel. 020 8722 6054. A practical and painless way of becoming an expert C programmer New edition also covers C++ and the Windows environment Get up to speed with the essential maths needed for C without having to buy a university maths text!

Abstract: "Natural Enemies examines people-wildlife conflicts from a social anthropological perspective. The authors focus on the human dimension of these conflicts - an area often neglected by specialists in applied ecology and wildlife management - and on their social and political contexts. Case studies of specific conflicts are drawn from Africa, Asia, Europe and America, and feature an assortment of wild animals and birds, including chimpanzees, elephants, wild pigs, foxes, bears, wolves, pigeons and ducks." "Examining the symbolic, as well as material, dimensions of wildlife pestilence, anthropologists can reveal the cultural character of many of our 'natural enemies'. These reports from the 'front line' show that human conflict with wildlife is often an expression of conflict between people."--Jacket

Abstract: The South African higher education system has historically been characterized by racial and gender inequities inherited from the discriminatory policies of the apartheid era. Emerging from a higher education history plagued with deeply entrenched racial disparities, Voices of Conflict examines how academic programs and structures at the historically white universities have responded to the increasing enrollment of black students since the enactment of the Universities Amendment Act in 1983. Dr. Mabokela specifically seeks to understand the perceptions and attitudes of students, faculty, and administrators and to determine how these respective constituents have responded to changes in student demographics. Her study brings to light, with clarity and thoroughness, many too often overlooked and neglected issues in higher education in South Africa.

Abstract: How do some salespeople consistently outsell their competition? Why do closing techniques work in small sales but fail in larger ones? How can salespeople dramatically increase their sales volume from major accounts? If you're in sales--or if you manage a sales force--you need the SPIN strategy. Developed from 12 years of research into 35,000 sales calls, SPIN--Situation, Problem, Implication, Need-payoff--is already in use by many of the world's top sales forces. Now these revolutionary, easy-to-apply methods can be yours. With wit and authority, Neil Rackham explains why traditional sales models don't work for large sales. With supreme clarity, he unfolds the enormously successful SPIN strategy, using real-world examples and informative cases. You may find the techniques controversial; they often go against the grain of conventional sales training. In the end, the powerful evidence Rackham presents will convince and convert you.

Abstract: The evil prosthesis of Captain Hook, the comical speech of Porky Pig, and the bumbling antics of Mr. Magoo are all examples of images in our culture which can become the basis of negative attitudes and subliminal prejudice towards persons with disabilities. These attitudes influence and underlie discriminatory acts, resulting in negative treatment and segregation. A teacher's ability to recognize and counter such images may well determine the success of inclusion and mainstreaming programs in our schools and society. Well-researched and well-written, this book offers practical guidance as grou

Abstract: Apache is far and away the most widely used web server platform in the world, running on Windows NT as well as Unix and other platforms. It powers about half of the world's existing web sites and is still increasing market share. Apache also forms the basis of a number of commercial web servers, such as IBM HTTP Server powered by Apache and C2Net's Stronghold. Apache is at the leading edge of web server development with many new technologies being implemented first. Apache has a flexible architecture that allows independent developers to add their own functionality by way of modules, written either in C or, with the advent of mod_perl, in Perl. The Apache Pocket Reference, a companion volume to Writing Apache Modules with Perl and C and Apache: The Definitive Guide, 2nd Edition, covers Apache 1.3.12. It provides a complete overview of the command-line options, configuration directives, and modules, and covers Apache support utilities.

Abstract: This new release of Communications Server for AIX includes many new features and functions that make CS/AIX a more important player in bridging the e-business gap between the Internet and critical legacy data applications. Support for secure TN3270 communications with SSL and load balancing with SLP are critical in insuring secure and consistent communications with the host. Support for high performance routing, branch network configurations, and channel attachment are significant in that they allow placement of Communications Server anywhere it benefits performance most in the customer's IP or SNA network. This book covers the new features and functions in Communications Server for AIX, Version 6. Each feature is explained. Implementation steps are listed for most features, and sample scenarios are reviewed to give a better understanding of where a feature or function may fit in your networking environment. Guidelines given in this IBM Redbooks publication are general. Several scenarios are included, and although actual customer networks most likely will differ, these scenarios serve as examples for customers to develop proper plans to expand or migrate their networks to meet future business requirements. Customers are invited to engage IBM in the planning process.

Abstract: Electrochemical reactions make significant contributions to organic synthesis either in the laboratory or on an industrial scale. These methods have the potential for developing more "green" chemical synthesis. Over recent years, modern investigations have clarified the mechanisms of important organic electrochemical reactions. Progress has also been made in controlling the reactivity of intermediates through either radical or ionic pathways. Now is the time to gather all the electrochemical work into a textbook. As an essential addition to the armory of synthetic organic chemists, electrochemical reactions give results not easily achieved by many other chemical routes. This book presents a logical development of reactions and mechanisms in organic electrochemistry at a level suited to research scientists and final year graduate students. It forms an excellent starting point from which synthetic organic chemists, in both academia and industry, can appreciate uses for electrochemical methods in their own work. The book is also a reference guide to the literature.

Abstract: Financial Performance presents the foundation concepts underlying the Senior Executive Programmes the Authors have taught together and separately over the last 15 years in Europe, Asia and North America. These programmes include The Oxford Advanced Management Programme The Oxford Senior Executive Finance Programme The INSEAD Advanced Management Programme The IMI, Geneva, Advanced Management Programme The Harvard Advanced Management Programme The Oxford International Executive Programme, Singapore The IMI International Finance Programme, Singapore The book is intended as a reference manual as well as a textbook and will be of value to anyone with an interest in financial performance - particularly senior executives. The developments in modern finance over the last two decades have considerable implications for the way senior executives think about the finance discipline. It is no longer enough to have a rudimentary knowledge of basic finance and a heavy reliance on financial specialists. CEOs of course need excellent financial professionals - however they need to go beyond this and provide strategic leadership. This requires a conceptual framework for dealing with financial matters. This book provides a description of the underlying ideas and will be of value to anyone with an interest in financial performance - particularly senior executives. This book revolves around the concept of value and it is organised into two parts. Part I Performance Measurement Consists of three chapters, all of which focus on the real and fairly complex set of financial statements of DaimlerChrysler AG. The first two chapters provide a detailed guided tour of the financial statements which deconstruct the complexity and then reconstruct the financials to provide a clearer base for analysis. These chapters have been arranged to deal with each line item of financial statements which have been highlighted in such a way to allow the reader to treat the materials as a reference as well as a sequential read. Chapter three presents a framework for evaluating financial health and introduces a cash flow based model for understanding the short and medium term constraints on a firm's growth. This exposition revolves around the concept of sustainable growth. Part 2 Valuation In the second part of the book chapter 4 introduces the cost of capital concept followed by chapter 5 which provides a general source of reference for valuation and a variety of difference applications.Cha...

Abstract: Risk Management is one of the biggest issues facing the financial markets today. 'Managing Operational Risk in Financial Markets' outlines the major issues for risk management and focuses on operational risk as a key activity in managing risk on an enterprise-wide basis. While risk management had always been an integral part of financial activity, the 1990s has seen the requirement for risk management establish itself as a key function within banks and other financial institutions. With greater emphasis on ensuring that money is not lost through adverse market conditions, counterparty failure or inappropriate controls, systems or people, risk management has become a discipline in its own right. Managing risk is now THE paramount topic within the financial sector. Recurring major losses through the 1990s has shocked financial institutions into placing much greater emphasis on risk management and controls. The collapse of Barings and losses made by Metallgescellschaft, Orange County, Diawa and Sumitomo as a result of a lack of procedures, systems or managerial control has demonstrated to organisations the need to broaden the scope of their risk management activity from merely looking at market and credit risk. This has brought into focus the need for managing operational risk. Operational risk can only be managed on an enterprise wide basis as it includes the entire process of policies, culture, procedures, expertise and systems that an institution needs in order to manage all the risks resulting from its financial transactions. In fact, in order to effectively manage market and credit risks it is necessary to have the relevant skills and expertise in the staff, technical and organisational infrastructure, as well as monitoring and control systems. As all of these are components of operational risk, it then becomes apparent that an integrated risk management approach needs to focus on operational risk. Provides a comprehensive framework for the management of operational risk Defines the spectrum of risks faced by organisations and how they can effectively manage these Develops an enterprise-wide risk information system and defines the major challenges that need to be addressed in developing such a system

Abstract: The Patterns for e-business are a group of proven, reusable assets that can help speed the process of developing applications. The pattern discussed in this book, Business to Business e-Marketplace Pattern, is an emerging pattern that allows the development of e-Marketplace hub applications which bring multiple buyers and sellers together in a way that provides efficient electronic trading of goods and services. Subsets of the application topologies for the Business to Business e-Marketplace Pattern are used to describe different parts of the full marketplace topology, and they represent increasing levels of complexity, functionality and integration in the topology, ranging from a simple e-Marketplace to a fully integrated e-Marketplace. Part 1 of the IBM Redbooks publication describes the nature of e-Marketplaces and guides you through the process of choosing an application and runtime topology to deliver the desired market functionality. Part 2 of the book provides a set of guidelines for building your e-Marketplace application. These guidelines include discussion of performance, technology options, application design, application development, systems management, and security. Part 3 of the book describes, using the standard sample application, the functions available in WebSphere Commerce Suite, Marketplace Edition for AIX.
