Abstract: Exile and migration played a critical role in the diffusion and development of modernism around the globe, yet have long remained largely understudied phenomena within art historiography. Focusing on the intersections of exile, artistic practice and urban space, this volume brings together contributions by international researchers committed to revising the historiography of modern art. It pays particular attention to metropolitan areas that were settled by migrant artists in the first half of the 20th century. These arrival cities developed into hubs of artistic activities and transcultural contact zones where ideas circulated, collaborations emerged, and concepts developed. Taking six major cities as a starting point--Bombay (now Mumbai), Buenos Aires, Istanbul, London, New York, and Shanghai -- the authors explore how urban topographies and landscapes were modified by exiled artists re-establishing their practices in metropolises across the world. Questioning the established canon of Western modernism, Arrival Cities investigates how the migration of artists to different urban spaces impacted their work and the historiography of art. In doing so, it aims to encourage the discussion between international scholars from different research fields, such as exile studies, art history, social history, architectural history, architecture, and urban studies

Abstract: This is a book on the state of social anthropology as an academic discipline in contemporary Zimbabwe. The authors are frustrated and disheartened by a problematic visibility and sluggish growth of the discipline in the country. The book makes an important claim that the future and vibrancy of anthropology in Zimbabwe, lies in how well anthropologists in the country and in the diaspora are able to join efforts in articulating, debating and enhancing its relevance and vitality. The book provides critical overview and nuanced analyses of the role and continued relevance of the discipline in reading and interpreting the social unfolding of everyday life and dynamism. It is a vital text for understanding and contextualising histories and trends in the development of social anthropology in Zimbabwe and how anthropologists in the country navigate the tumultuous waters and struggles that have engrossed the discipline since colonial times. The book has the capacity to generate added insights and influence national, continental, and global debates and trends in the field

Abstract: Drawing on communications ‘rescued' from the shredders in the last days of Rhodesia, enlivened by photographs and memories - both her own and those of her colleagues - Maia Chenaux-Repond tells the story of her work as the Provincial Community Development Officer (Women) for Mashonaland and South in the Ministry of Internal Affairs in the 1970s. There are no records whatsoever in the National Archives of Zimbabwe about the Community Development Section (Women), even though it was active in all the provinces. In the absence of other documentary sources, and all other provincial officers long having emigrated or died, this account of her work fills a significant gap in the pre-independence history of Zimbabwe. The crucial focus of the Women's Section on improving the lives and skills of women in the rural areas became progressively more difficult when the civil war intensified from the early 1970 as rural people - and the development workers themselves - were moved into ‘Protected Villages', and as the Ministry became increasingly militarized

Abstract: When discussing inequality and poverty in Hong Kong, scholars and politicians often focus on the failures of government policy and push for an increase in social welfare. Richard Wong argues in Fixing Inequality in Hong Kong that universal retirement support, minimum wage, and standard hours of work are of limited effect in alleviating inequality. By comparing Hong Kong with Singapore, he points out that Hong Kong needs a new and long-term strategy on human resource policy. He recommends more investment in education, starting with early education and immigration policy reforms to attract highly educated and skilled people to join the workforce. In analyzing what causes inequality, this book ties disparate issues together into a coherent framework, such as Hong Kong's aging population, lack of investment in human capital, and family breakdowns. Rising divorce rates among low-income households have created a shortage of housing, driving rents and property prices upwards, and enlarging the wealth gap between those who own housing and those who do not, thus causing intergenerational upward mobility. This is the third of Richard Wong's collections of articles on society and economy in Hong Kong. Diversity and Occasional Anarchy and Hong Kong Land for Hong Kong People, published by Hong Kong University Press in 2013 and 2015 respectively, discuss growing contradictions in Hong Kong's economy and current housing problems as well as their solutions

Abstract: Between 1880 and 1922, the coal fields of southern West Virginia witnessed two bloody and protracted strikes, the formation of two competing unions, and the largest armed conflict in American labor history--a week-long battle between 20,000 coal miners and 5,000 state police, deputy sheriffs, and mine guards. These events resulted in an untold number of deaths, indictments of over 550 coal miners for insurrection and treason, and four declarations of martial law. Corbin argues that these violent events were collective and militant acts of aggression interconnected and conditioned by decades of oppression. His study goes a long way toward breaking down the old stereotypes of Appalachian and coal mining culture. This second edition contains a new preface and afterword by author David A. Corbin

Abstract: Representing research from east, central, west, and southern Africa, Engaging Children and Youth in Africa provides a well-balanced analysis of on-the-ground data with methodological and phenomenological issues that abound in much of research in Africa today. With an introduction that charts out some of the most critical approaches in African-centred research on children and youth, contributors to this volume give the reader a glimpse of the product of engaged research that places children and youth at the centre of analysis. The authors follow recent studies that have insisted on seeing African childhood and youth beyond constraining Western notions of vulnerability or innocence, to capture the ways in which recent advances in technology, the intensification of global processes, and continued weakening of the nation-state have not only contributed to new ways of being children and youth but how they have also provided a new lens through which to study social change

Abstract: For eighteenth century readers, the contents of a novel were often perceived as part of reality. The first part of this study on the results of this view of literature is concerned both with the relevant German, French, and English criticism of the novel and the use of literature as a frame of reference in the poetry, drama, and prose writings of the day. The second part analyzes seven novels (among them Goethe's Werther and Meister) whose heroes were profoundly influenced by literature. The final section sketches the continuous presence of related themes, motifs, and narrative techniques in later novels with particular emphasis on Mann's Zauberberg

Abstract: Bernd's study shows how Storm's Novellen are made purposeful by the operations of a fictional intelligence, haunted by the fear of passing time. The author challenges the traditional belief that Storm's narratives are products of a sentimental mind. No other discussion of Storm's tales, be it analysis of an individual narrative or collective treatment of several or all of them, seeks to interpret them with such specific emphasis upon their fictional, omniscient narrator. This concentration on the fictional narrator also leads into a study of Storm's subjective narrative form

Abstract: The oldest medieval beast epic was translated literally into English prose for the first time in this volume, with Latin on facing pages. The introduction and commentary by Zeydel familiarize the reader with the history and value of the text and constituted a new approach, arguing for the inclusion of Latin literature composed in what is now Germany in the history of German literature

Abstract: Otto Ludwig, nineteenth-century German novelist and critic, originated the term poetic realism. In this excellent study, Ludwig's prose is sympathetically and thoroughly examined and a clear account of the evolution of German fiction after Romanticism is presented. Taking Ludwig's narrative works together with his literary criticism, McClain shows how the author attempted to blend the real and the ideal to reach the goal of poetic realism as he envisioned it

Abstract: This thorough study of the moral values of the Nibelungen and of their paradoxical behavior posits the work as an indictment of a society that results time and again in collective human tragedy. Told with tragic insight, yet sympathetically, the epic may well be described as the story of man, the victim of himself. Mueller analyzes the work in three chapters, focused on substance, essence and significance, in order to make the epic poem relevant to a modern audience

Abstract: A news item concerning six German soldiers trapped for years in the army food storage bunker provided Rudolf Hagelstange with a plot and an effective symbol to express the tensions, emotions, and paradoxes of modern man's being. In this volume the poet Herman Salinger translates Hagelstange's poem into verse with the original German on facing pages. An introductory essay by Charles W. Hoffmann gives context on Hagelstange and the ballad

The translator gives careful attention to details of substance, form and style, and to the spirit of the original, reproducing the simplicity and naturalness of language so characteristic of Goethe. Note: A condensed version, in English, of the author's Novalis, der Dichter der Blauen Blume , Issued as part of book collections on Project MUSE , Originally published in 1954, Hiebel's Novalis was the first critical evaluation in English of the life and works of Novalis (1772-1801), the German Romantic poet of the Blue Flower, since Thomas Carlyle's essay in 1829. This book presents not only a fully rounded picture of the man, the philosopher and scientist, the writer of beautiful fairy tales, the mystic poet of Christianity, but also a thoughtful commentary on one of the most influential and fruitful periods in German intellectual life. Hiebel combines the exactness required of the scholar with the creative writer's intuitive appreciation of a great poet's works , "Essays and studies about Novalis and his age, published in the United States and Great Britain." -- "Editions of Novalis' works in the English language."
