    Abstract: Jazz in der DDR war vielfältig, subversiv und oft nonkonform. Besonders in Jazzklubs, die überall im Land verstärkt ab den 1970er Jahren ins Leben gerufen worden, manifestierten sich beständige Reibungspunkte zwischen Staat und jungen Jazzbegeisterten, die eigensinnig ihre Musik hören, aufführen und veranstalten wollten. Jazz galt für seine Anhängerinnen und Anhänger dabei als eine Art Lebensentwurf neben statt gegen den SED-Staat.Anhand einer breiten Regionalstudie der Jazzszenen im damaligen Thüringer Raum untersucht das Buch mittels Zugängen aus Biografieforschung, Kulturtransfer und Alltagsgeschichte soziale Kontexte, musikalische Aneignungsformen sowie kulturbehördliche Kontrollstrukturen und das vielfältige Vorgehen der Staatssicherheit gegen Jazzmusik und Akteure zur Zeit der DDR.

In den letzten 40 Jahren hat sich das Beatmaking in enger Verbindung mit musik- und medientechnologischen Entwicklungen global verbreitet und vielfältig ausdifferenziert. Dabei hat es vor allem im Bereich der populären Musik in musikalisch-ästhetischer und technisch-praktischer Hinsicht maßgebende Impulse gesetzt.In seiner qualitativ-empirischen Studie geht Chris Kattenbeck der Frage nach, was es bedeutet, als Beatmaker*in künstlerisch kompetent zu handeln, welche Fertigkeiten und Kenntnisse dafür nötig sind und wie diese erworben und entwickelt werden. Damit liefert er grundlegende Erkenntnisse über eine bislang kaum erforschte Musikpraxis und die mit ihr verbundenen künstlerischen Strategien und Techniken, ästhetischen Ziele und Vorstellungen, Wissensformen und Lernpraktiken. Dabei zeigt sich unter anderem, dass bestimmte in der Musikpädagogik vorherrschende Verständnisse – etwa von Musiklernen oder Musiktheorie – ungeeignet sind, das Beatmaking adäquat zu erfassen. Die Studie bietet daher nicht zuletzt Anlass, diese Verständnisse zu hinterfragen und neu zu konzeptualisieren, um mit der Vielfalt musikalischer Praxen in Zukunft angemessen umgehen zu können.

But in spite of attempts by influential scholars and political leaders to limit or control musical expression, music and sound permeated all layers of the social structure. Lisa Nielson here presents a rich social history of music, musicianship and the role of musicians in the early Islamicate era. Focusing primarily on Damascus, Baghdad and Jerusalem, Lisa Nielson draws on a wide variety of textual sources written for and about musicians and their professional/private environments -- including chronicles, literary sources, memoirs and musical treatises -- as well as the disciplinary approaches of musicology to offer insights into musical performances and the lives of musicians. In the process, the book sheds light onto the dynamics of medieval Islamicate courts, as well as how slavery, gender, status and religion intersected with music in courtly life.     Abstract: This book explores the history of reggae in modern Britain from the time it emerged as a cultural force in the 1970s. As basslines from Jamaica reverberated across the Atlantic, so they were received and transmitted by the UK's Afro-Caribbean community.     Abstract: Music in Conflict studies the complex relationship of musical culture to political life in Palestine-Israel, where conflict has both shaped and claimed the lives of Palestinians and Jews. In the context of the geography of violence that characterizes the conflict, borders and boundaries are material and social manifestations of the ways in which the production of knowledge is conditioned by political and structural violence. Ethical and aesthetic positions that shape artistic production in this context are informed by profound imbalances of power and contingent exposure to violence. Viewing expressive culture as a potent site for understanding these dynamics, the book examines the politics of sound to show how music-making reflects and forms identities, and in the process, shapes communities. The ethnography is based on fieldwork conducted in Israel and the West Bank in 2011-2012 and other excursions since then. Author has "followed the conflict" by "following the music," from concert halls to demonstrations, mixed-city community centers to Palestinian refugee camp children's clubs, alternative urban scenes and even a checkpoint. In all the different contexts presented, the monograph is thematically and theoretically underpinned by the ways in which music is used to culturally assert or reterritorialize both spatial and social boundaries in a situation of conflict

Sie verließen die Türkei aufgrund des Militärputsches von 1980, der Diskriminierung ihrer kurdischen und/oder alevitischen Identität oder des gescheiterten Gezi-Protests und erneuter Einschränkungen von Minderheitsgruppierungen im Musikleben. Kirsten Seidlitz untersucht, wie sie von Deutschland aus mit ihrem musikalischen Schaffen politisch kommentieren, inwiefern die deutsche Gesellschaft mit Musik erreicht, aufgeklärt und beeinflusst werden kann, und ob die in Deutschland produzierte Musik zurück in die Türkei gelangt.

    Abstract: In the 20th and 21st century, the tradition of singer-poets gained popularity in Eastern Turkey and its neighboring countries. Many of these artists were bi- or multilingual and thus representative of the ethnically diverse region of Eastern Anatolia. Wolf-Georg Zaddach rückt eine in der Forschung lange Zeit vernachlässigte Jugendkultur in den Fokus und erläutert - erstmalig in diesem Umfang - die alltäglichen Praktiken und Entwicklungen der Heavy Metal-Szene im DDR-Sozialismus der 1980er-Jahre. Die empirische Grundlage hierfür bieten bisher unveröffentlichte Quellen wie Songtexte auf Karteikarten, Fan-Briefe und Akten der »Stasi« (Ministerium für Staatssicherheit). Es kommen aber auch zahlreiche Zeitzeugen wie die Macher der Kultradiosendung »Tendenz Hard bis Heavy« sowie diverse Fans und Musiker zu Wort.

Dafür werden Musikvideos des US-amerikanischen Mainstreams in ihrer komplexen Verschränkung der auditiven und visuellen Ebenen mit der Sakraltheorie Georges Batailles gelesen. In vier Analysen von Musikvideos - u.a. von Kanye West - wird das Sakrale als aus dem Sozialen hervorgehende Kraft im Spannungsfeld von Macht, Ideologie und Widerstand diskutiert

    Abstract: The sustainability of music and other intangible expressions of culture has been high on the agenda of scholars, governments and NGOs in recent years. However, there is a striking lack of systematic research into what exactly affects sustainability across music cultures. By analyzing case studies of nine highly diverse music cultures against a single framework that identifies key factors in music sustainability, 'Sustainable Futures for Music Cultures' offers an understanding of both the challenges and the dynamics of music sustainability in the contemporary global environment, and breathes new life into the previously discredited realm of comparative musicology, from an emphatically non-Eurocentric perspective.

Mittels umfangreicher Archivrecherchen illustriert Michael Rauhuts Vergleich der Entwicklung des Blues in Ost- und Westdeutschland, wie soziale und politische Verhältnisse den Sinn von Musik formen.Rauhut zeigt: Wenn auch die Sounds weltweit gültigen Mustern folgen und kaum Unterschiede erkennen lassen, sind doch die Bedeutungszusammenhänge, in denen sich der Blues realisiert, durchaus verschieden. Die Studie bietet nicht nur ein kultur- und musikgeschichtliches Resümee der Genese des Blues in Deutschland, sondern leistet auch einen Beitrag zur Globalisierungsdebatte
    Abstract: People like to reduce the blues to a handful of clichés and twelve bars. But in actual fact, behind the seemingly standardized surface of the sound, manifold forms of cultural use are concealed. Using extensive archival research, Michael Rauhut's comparison of the development of the blues in East and West Germany illustrates how social and political relations form the meaning of music. It shows that even if the sounds follow globally valid models and differences can barely be recognized, the contexts of meaning in which the blues is employed are thoroughly different. This study offers not just a historical summary of the blues, it also provides a contribution to the debate around globalization

    Abstract: Who plays street music in Berlin and why? Mark Nowakowski provides a detailed portrait of street music in Berlin and of its protagonists, and in doing so, provides the first systematic investigation of this urban performance culture in Germany. In addition to the motives of the artists, he analyzes the role of the public and urban space as the context in which street music occurs, but also socio-cultural dimensions and historical processes of change. The study provides multifaceted information about the phenomenon of street music and represents a contribution to the description of the cultural life of Berlin and the musical identity of the city, whose profile is in no small part formed by street music as a performing culture with a strong everyday presence and great diversity of forms. Johannes Gruber untersucht dieses Phänomen erstmalig genauer anhand der von ihm entwickelten Flowanalyse. Die Anwendung dieser Methode auf über 600 Raptracks und die zugehörigen Texte liefert erstaunliche Ergebnisse und mündet in eine umfassende »Poetik des Rap«. Diese fasst standardisierte Verfahren der Textproduktion und -aufführung zusammen und zeigt den deutschen Rap in seiner ganzen Klanglichkeit. Wie Rapper diese Mechanismen und Strategien nutzen, um ein spezifisches Image bzw. Profil zu generieren, zeigt die Studie anhand der Genre-Stars Sido und Bushido
    Abstract: Rap does not exist on paper - rap must be performed. The individual style of a rapper - their flow - is thus a crucial measure of quality. Johannes Gruber examines this phenomenon for the first time using his own self-developed 'flow analysis'. The usage of this method on over 600 rap tracks and their lyrics delivers astounding results and culminates in a comprehensive "poetics of rap", combining standardised methods of text production and performance and presenting German rap in its complete soundscape. Drawing on insights from a wide range of disciplines including popular music, cultural studies, sociology, anthropology, philosophy, and ethics, this volume offers new and innovative research on metal musicology, global/local scenes studies, fandom, gender and metal identity, metal media, and commerce. Offering a wide-ranging focus on bands, scenes, periods, and sounds, contributors explore topics such as the riff-based song writing of classic heavy metal bands and their modern equivalents, and the musical-aesthetics of Grindcore, Doom metal, Death metal, and Progressive metal.     Description / Table of Contents: About 9,000 Jewish refugees from Nazi Germany settled in Australia between 1933 and 1945, a small fraction of the hundreds of thousands who fled. Although initially greeted with a mixed reception as «enemy aliens», some of these refugees remained and made a significant impact on multicultural Australia. This book traces the difficult journey of the orchestral performers, virtuoso soloists, singers, conductors and composers who sought refuge on a distant continent. A few were famous artists who toured Australia and stayed, most notably the piano virtuoso Jascha Spivakovsky and the members of the Weintraubs Syncopators, one of the most successful jazz bands of the Weimar Republic. Drawing on extensive primary sources - including correspondence, travel documents and interviews with the refugees themselves or their descendants - the author depicts in vivid detail the lives of nearly a hundred displaced musicians. Available for the first time in English, this volume brings to light a wealth of Jewish, exilic and musical history that was hitherto unknown
