The book divides into five parts. The first part deals with theoretical questions related to the definition and the modeling of the construct of functional literacy. The second part goes into the notion of literacy development. Both societal and individual aspects of literacy development are taken into account. In the next two parts the actual achievement of literacy in various regions of the world is dealt wi , FUNCTIONAL LITERACY: THEORETICAL ISSUES AND EDUCATIONAL IMPLICATIONS; Editorial page; Title page; Copyright page; Table of contents; Acknowledgements; Introduction; Modeling and promoting functional literacy; Part1: The construct of functional literacy; Literacy, myths and legacies: lessons from the history of literacy; The construct of oral and written language; Text processing and its relevance for literacy; Cross-cultural perspectives on literacy; Functional literacy in a changing world; Part 2: Literacy and development; Literacy and the making of the Western mind

Abstract: What does `critical mathematics education' mean? This is the essential question in Towards a Philosophy of Critical Mathematics Education. The question forms the basis of an approach to the clarification of such notions as: crises, democracy, the Vico-paradox, mathematical formatting, reflective knowing, learning as action, personal fatalism and underground intentions. The subject matter considered is the project-organised mathematics education undertaken in primary and secondary school. It is shown that the concept of critical mathematics education is crucial for every educational theory. As the book explains, if humanity is submerged in technology, and if modern technology is to a great extent constituted by mathematics, then the implicit and explicit functions of mathematics education assume a fundamental importance

Abstract: Mathematics teaching and learning have been dominated by a concern for the intellectual readiness of the child, debates over rote learning versus understanding and, recently, mathematical processes and thinking. The gaze into today's mathematics classroom is firmly focused on the individual learner. Recently, however, studies of mathematics in social practices, including the market place and the home, have initiated a shift of focus. Culture has become identified as a key to understanding the basis on which the learner appropriates meaning. The chapters in this timely book attempt to engage with this shift of focus and offer original contributions to the debate about mathematics teaching and learning. They adopt theoretical perspectives while drawing on the classroom as both the source of investigation and the site of potential change and development. The book will be of fundamental interest to lecturers and researchers and to teachers concerned with the classroom as a cultural phenomenon

Abstract: The validity and utility of employment tests have become entangled in the debate over the 1991 Civil Rights Bill. Worried about compliance with new federal guidelines for test validity, and concerned about possible lawsuits, the business world became wary of pre-employment testing in the early 1980s, but the use of employment testing increased throughout that decade. This book reflects a continuing focus on test validity and fairness, as psychometricians debate the logical, theoretical, and empirical grounds for judging validity, and legal experts debate the appropriateness of various tests and testing practices. The book was prepared under the auspices of the National Commission on Testing and Public Policy

Abstract: Drawing upon experiences at state and local level project evaluation, and based on current research in the professional literature, Payne presents a practical, systematic, and flexible approach to educational evaluations. Evaluators at all levels -- state, local and classroom -- will find ideas useful in conducting, managing, and using evaluations. Special user targets identified are state department of education personnel and local school system administrative personnel. The volume can be used by those doing evaluation projects `in the field', or as a text for graduate courses at an introductory level. The book begins with an overview of the generic evaluation process. Chapter Two is devoted to the criteria for judging the effectiveness of evaluation practice. Chapter Three addresses the all important topic of evaluation goals and objectives. Chapters Four, Five and Six basically are concerned with the approach, framework, or design of an evaluation study. Chapter Four contains a discussion of four major philosophical frameworks or metaphors and the implications of these frameworks for conducting an evaluation. Chapters Five and Six describe predominantly quantitative and qualitative designs, respectively. Design, implementation and operational issues related to instrumentation (Chapter Seven), management and decision making (Chapter Eight), and reporting and utilization of results (Chapter Nine) are next addressed. The final chapter of the book (Chapter Ten) considers the evaluation of educational products and materials

Abstract: The common theme that links the six contributions to this volume is the emphasis on students' inferred mathematical experiences as the starting point in the theory-building process. The focus in five of the chapters is primarily cognitive and addresses the processes by which students construct increasingly sophisticated mathematical ways of knowing. The conceptual constructions addressed include multiplicative notions, fractions, algebra, and the fundamental theorem of calculus. The primary goal in each of these chapters is to account for meaningful mathematical learning -- learning that involves the construction of experientially-real mathematical objects. The theoretical constructs that emerge from the authors' intensive analyses of students' mathematical activity can be used to anticipate problems that might arise in learning--teaching situations, and to plan solutions to them. The issues discussed include the crucial role of language and symbols, and the importance of dynamic imagery. The remaining chapter complements the other contributors' cognitive focus by bringing to the fore the social dimension of mathematical development. He focuses on the negotiation of mathematical meaning, thereby locating students in ongoing classroom interactions and the classroom microculture. Mathematical learning can then be seen to be both an individual and a collective process

Abstract: Over the last ten years deliberate and determined efforts have been made to improve schooling. This book charts recent and current developments in the practical business of changing classroom practice to make schools more effective. It is devoted to detecting the effects on classroom practice of the efforts made to improve schools and classrooms, and to understanding how classroom practice changes. Contributors include advisory teachers, Higher Education HE tutors and researchers, and work described ranges from early years' classrooms to post-experience course outcomes and the tracking of Inservice education and training INSET effectiveness

Abstract: This book discusses the development of new models, methods, and tools to support the design and production of (computer-based) learning material. The contributions describe a number of projects that represent the state of the art of European research on courseware authoring, with a special attention to simulation-based learning material. Researchers in instructional science and educational technology, trainers, teachers, and professionals involved or interested in the development of learning material will find valuable ideas, clues and references in this book. Some of the relevant topics that emerge from the papers are: the separation of the conceptual representation of the knowledge to be taught from the instructional strategies and from the actual pieces of multimedia learning material; the support of all the phases of the authoring process, including the most abstract at the design stage; collaborative approaches and reuse techniques

Abstract: This book examines the progress of literacy in ancient Greece from its origins in the eighth century to the fourth century B.C.E., when the major cultural institutions of Athens became totally dependent on alphabetic literacy. By introducing new evidence and re-evaluating the older evidence, Robb demonstrates that early Greek literacy can be understood only in terms of the rich oral culture that immediately preceded it, one that was dominated by the oral performance of epical verse, or "Homer." Only gradually did literate practices supersede oral habits and the oral way of life, forg
