Performance has always been used by sociologists to understand the social world but this volume offers the first systematic analytical framework based on the performance metaphor to explain large-scale social and cultural processes.     Abstract: This book focuses on one of the prime movers in the unification of Lunigiana – a region which at the time was still broken up into a myriad of tiny feudal holdings, almost all in the hands of the various branches of the Malaspina family. The process of unification began in the fifteenth century, when various areas of the region were conquered by Milan and Florence, which also divided between them the hegemony of the remaining independent territories, while Genoa too displayed an interest in expansion in the region. As a result it became crucial for the local lords to manoeuvre between the various forces at play to maintain the independence of their own little states. Among the figures who displayed the greatest dexterity in this was Gabriele Malaspina, who became a leading player on the stage of local history. The book starts by illustrating the period in which Malaspina succeeded in obtaining his political independence, and then goes on to analyse the phase in which his policy came to be characterised by an absolute loyalty to Florence. Finally the book addresses the last part of the Marquis's life, marked by a progressive distancing from the Florentine alliance in favour of other entities, in which he nevertheless always succeeded in maintaining his independence

    Note: "Every day, small arms and light weapons (SALW) kill and maim, wound and threaten millions of adults and children, whether combatants and civilians in war zones or gangs and communities in degraded "peacetime" environments that are characterized by large-scale violence. Due to their widespread availability, mobility and ease of use prolific SALW have become central to maintaining social dislocation, destabilization, insecurity and crime in the build-up to war, in wartime and in the aftermath of violent conflict. Small arms are misused within domestic settings, as well as in public spaces, and they affect everyone in the community without regard to sex or age. Although the impacts of these weapons can be vastly different for women and men, girls and boys, a careful consideration of gender and age is rare in the formulation of small arms policy, of planning small arms collection or control, or even in small arms research. To counter the effects of prolific SALW, their role in reinforcing and maintaining gender- and age-specific violence must be more deeply analyzed and the results applied at the policy and operational level. This work should be undertaken in war-afflicted contexts, in societies suffering from elevated levels of social violence and/or severe underdevelopment, and in those tolerant of the presence of individually owned firearms. Contributors to this book draw on experience and research from around the world on the nexus of gender, age, violence and small arms in developing and developed countries.     Abstract: The Straight State is the most expansive study of the federal regulation of homosexuality yet written. Unearthing startling new evidence from the National Archives, Margot Canaday shows how the state systematically came to penalize homosexuality, giving rise to a regime of second-class citizenship that sexual minorities still live under today. Canaday looks at three key arenas of government control--immigration, the military, and welfare--and demonstrates how federal enforcement of sexual norms emerged with the rise of the modern bureaucratic state. She begins at the turn of the twentieth century when the state first stumbled upon evidence of sex and gender nonconformity, revealing how homosexuality was policed indirectly through the exclusion of sexually "degenerate" immigrants and other regulatory measures aimed at combating poverty, violence, and vice. Canaday argues that the state's gradual awareness of homosexuality intensified during the later New Deal and through the postwar period as policies were enacted that explicitly used homosexuality to define who could enter the country, serve in the military, and collect state benefits. Midcentury repression was not a sudden response to newly visible gay subcultures, Canaday demonstrates, but the culmination of a much longer and slower process of state-building during which the state came to know and to care about homosexuality across many decades. Social, political, and legal history at their most compelling, The Straight State explores how regulation transformed the regulated: in drawing boundaries around national citizenship, the state helped to define the very meaning of homosexuality in America.

    Abstract: This book is a fascinating study of the Vietnamese experience and memory of the Vietnam War through the lens of popular imaginings about the wandering souls of the war dead. These ghosts of war play an important part in postwar Vietnamese historical narrative and imagination, and Heonik Kwon explores the intimate ritual ties with these unsettled identities which still survive in Vietnam today as well as the actions of those who hope to liberate these hidden but vital historical presences from their uprooted social existence. Taking a unique approach to the cultural history of war, he introduces gripping stories about spirits claiming social justice and about his own efforts to wrestle with the physical and spiritual presence of ghosts.     Abstract: 1. EinleitungAusgehend von der Fragestellung, warum gerade bei Tschetschenen und Palästinensern der Selbstmordterrorismus in den letzten Jahren so populär geworden ist, analysiert die Autorin die Geschichte dieser beiden Völker. Einer der Gründe ist bisher wenig beachtet worden. Der Einfluss eines kollektiven Traumas, das als solches nicht anerkannt, behandelt und auch nicht einer politischen Lösung zugeführt wurde. 2. Geschichte der Palästinenser und TschetschenenIm Zuge der Errichtung Israels im Unabhängigkeitskrieg 1948 verlor die Hälfte des palästinensischen Volkes - 750.000 Menschen - ihre Heimat. Unter der Führung von Jassir Arafat kämpften sie in den Jahrzehnten danach - mit Gewalt und am Verhandlungstisch - um einen eigenen Staat. Das Recht auf Rückkehr spielte dabei immer eine besondere Rolle. Die "Nakbah", die als Katastrophe empfundene Vertreibung 1948, wurde dabei Bezugs- und Angelpunkt mehrer Generationen von Flüchtlingen. Die Weigerung Israels, die Mitverantwortung für die Vertreibung der Palästinenser zu übernehmen und das kollektive Trauma der Palästinenser anzuerkennen - aus Angst vor einer Infragestellung des eigenen Staates - ist einer der Gründe, warum der Nahostkonflikt bisher nicht gelöst werden konnte. Auch die Tschetschenen durften jahrzehntelang über die Deportation ihres Volkes nicht einmal sprechen. Hatte Josef Stallin sie erst unter dem Vorwand der Kollaboration mit Nazi-Deutschland deportiert, waren sie zwar nach seinem Tod in die Heimat zurückgekehrt, lebten dort aber jahrzehntelang weiterhin als "unzuverlässiges Volk". Das kollektive Trauma der Deportation konnte nur mündlich überliefert werden. Mit dem Zusammenbruch der Sowjetunion brach der ungelöste Konflikt zwischen Tschetschenien und Russland sofort auf, das Land ging in blutigen Kriegen unter. 3. ZusammenfassungDie kollektive Erinnerung ist in den vergangenen Jahrzehnten zu einem zentralen Forschungsthema geworden. Der vorsichtige Einsatz von in der Individualpsychologie gewonnenen Erkenntnissen in der Behandlung von kollektiven Traumata, um zu einer politischen Lösung zu kommen, ist eine Chance.Das Studium historischer Fakten in Kombination mit den Erkenntnissen der Psychologie und Psychiatrie bietet die Basis für eine politische Lösung.     Abstract: Although small and not particularly peoples both Chechens and Palestinians became famous for suicide bomber attacks in recent years. This can - partly - be explained by the unrecognised collective traumas of the past.Both Chechens and Palestinians experienced collective traumas in the 1940ties. The entire Chechen population wad deported by Josef Stalin to Kasakhstan, Kirgysia and Sibiria in February 1944 under the pretext of collaboration with the Third Reich. Those who survived were allowed to return in 1957 to Chechenya. Half of the Palestinian Arab population was expelled from Palestine in 1947/48, when fighting erupted between Jews and Arabs. The refugees were never allowed to return. The memory of the deportation/expulsion was kept alive. The founding traumas contributed to the development of Chechen and Palestinian nationalism. Chechens and Palestinians till today suffer from their collective traumas, which stayed unrecognised and therefore create psychological and political problems for the following generations - and for their adverseries. The phenomenon of the "closed circle of violence" created a phobic collective behaviour, which led for example Chechens to the illusionary declaration of independence in 1991. It also led to the individual overreaction of young Chechens or Palestinians, who became living bombs. The collective Trauma, if untreated, poses a threat to any peaceful political solution

    Abstract: Why do some migrants integrate quickly, while others become long-term minorities? What is the role of the state in the settlement process? To what extent are experiences in the past different from the present? Are the recent migrants really integrating in another way than those in the past? Is Islam indeed an obstacle to integration? These are some of the burning questions, which dominate the current politicized debate on immigration in Western Europe. In this book, leading historians and social scientists analyze and compare a variety of settlement processes in past and present migration to Western Europe. Identifying general factors in the process of adaptation of new immigrants, the contributors trace social changes effected by recent European immigration, and the parallels with the great American migration of the 1880s-1920s. The history of migration to Western Europe and the way these migrants found their place in the receiving societies, is not only essential to understand the way nations deal with newcomers in the present, but also constitutes a highly interesting laboratory for different paths of integration now and then. By analyzing and comparing a wealth of settlement processes both in the past and in the present this book is both a bold interdisciplinary endeavor, and at the same time the first attempt to identify general factors underlying the way migrants adapt to their new surroundings, as well as how societies change under the influence of immigration. The chapters in the book both look at specific groups in various periods, but also analyses the structure of the state, churches unions and other important organized actors in Western European nation states. Moreover, the results are embedded in the more theoretical American literature on the comparison of old and new migrants. All chapters have an explicit comparative perspective, either by comparing different groups or different periods, whereas the general conclusion ties together the various outcomes in a systematic way, highlighting the main answers to the central questions about the various outcomes of settlement processes.     Abstract: De laatste jaren worden vragen gesteld bij het integratieproces van migranten. Nieuwkomers zouden tegenwoordig 'slechter' en 'langzamer' integreren dan in het verleden. Het besef dat West-Europa altijd al immigratie heeft gekend is nauwelijks doorgedrongen tot politici en sociale wetenschappers. Bijgevolg ontbreekt - anders dan in de VS - een discussie over verschillen en overeenkomsten tussen vroegere en hedendaagse integratieprocessen. In Paths of Integration vergelijken gerenommeerde onderzoekers integratieprocessen in het heden en het verleden en sluiten daarmee aan bij het recente Amerikaanse debat tussen historici, sociologen, antropologen en politieke wetenschappers. Verder identificeren de auteurs de factoren die ten grondslag liggen aan het integratieproces van migranten en de maatschappelijke veranderingen ten gevolge van migratie. De verschillende hoofdstukken richten zich op specifieke migrantengroepen in verschillende perioden (zoals Italianen en Algerijnen in Frankrijk, Polen in Duitsland, moslims in Nederland en Caraïbische migranten in Frankrijk en het Verenigd Koninkrijk) en bieden een analyse van de staatsstructuur, kerkgenootschappen en andere belangrijke organisaties en instituties in de westerse natiestaten. Ondanks de huidige opvatting dat migranten tegenwoordig minder snel zouden integreren, laten de auteurs overtuigend zien dat er meer overeenkomsten dan verschillen zijn tussen vroeger en nu dan doorgaans wordt gedacht. Tegelijkertijd identificeren zij in de conclusie van het boek een aantal belangrijke ontwikkelingen in de moderne tijd, die het integratieproces compliceren.

Damit gerät die transparente Masse als flexibles Medium sozialer Normalität in den Blick, die, in den Blickrastern massenkultureller Ereignisse angeordnet, ihre bedrohliche Materialität verliert. Die Autorin analysiert die Paradoxien einer Kultur, die nach einer Lesart Slavoj Zizeks der Unvorhersehbarkeit moderner Existenz mit einem phantasmatischen Mehr-Begehren begegnet
