    Abstract: Poverty and inequality have pervaded British society to this day, but this has not always been self-evident to contemporaries - popular understandings have depended on existing knowledge. Inequality Knowledge provides the first detailed history of the numbers about the gap between rich and poor. It shows how they were produced, used, and suppressed at times, and how activists, scientists, and journalists eventually wrestled control over the figures from the state. The book traces the making and the politics of statistical knowledge about economic inequality in the United Kingdom from the post-war era to the 1990s. What kind of knowledge was available to contemporaries about socio-economic disparities in Britain and how they evolved over time? How was this knowledge produced and by whom? What did policy makers and civil servants know about the extent of poverty and inequality in British society and to what extent did they take the distributional impact of their social and fiscal policies into account? Far from just a technical matter, inequality knowledge had far-reaching implications for key debates and the wider political culture in contemporary Britain. Historicizing inequality knowledge speaks to a long tradition of historical research about social class divisions and cultural representations of economic disparities in twentieth-century Britain.

    Abstract: Infrastructures are fundamental means through which societies create spaces, but little is known about the precise ways in which this occurs. How have infrastructures animated certain understandings of space? How do infrastructures stabilize, or undermine, the spatial formats in which we live, which shape our everyday practices and which regulate access to services and resources? And, conversely, how do spaces frame the ways infrastructural provision is organized? How do existing spaces shape infrastructural development and the scope and forms of access to vital services such as transport and water? In this volume, historians and sociologists draw on a range of fascinating case studies and provide compelling answers to these questions. Exploring, among others, the provision of irrigation water in nineteenth-century Los Angeles, the invention of airport transit zones, and the infrastructural practices of homeless people in Berlin, the book demonstrates how the making of spaces through infrastructure is deeply political. Intent on revealing uneven geographies of provision and hierarchies of access, the contributors highlight how infrastructures are products of global entanglements.

    Abstract: This book uses sociological perspectives to bring together work on war and identity in the Middle Ages relating to a range of peoples and geographical settings from Europe, the eastern Mediterranean, the Middle East, and Asia.     Abstract: This book aims to study the departure and reception of refugees in 19th-century Europe, from the Congress of Vienna to the 1870-1880s. Through eight chapters, it draws on a transnational approach to analyze migratory movements across European borders. The book reviews the chronology of exile and shows how European states welcomed, selected, and expelled refugees. In addition to presenting the point of view of nation-states, it reflects the experience of those migrating. The book addresses departure into exile, captured through the material circumstances of crossing borders in the 19th century, and examines the emergence of new ways to pursue political commitments from abroad. The outcasts are considered in all their diversity, with a prominent place accorded to women and children, many of whom also moved under duress. The book aims to shed light on the forced migrations of Europeans across Europe, while also considering the global dimension, looking at exile to the Americas or the French colonies. A final chapter examines the impossibility or difficulty of returning from exile to one's country of origin, as well as the a posteriori memorial constructs around that crucial experience.

    Abstract: The fluidity of myth and history in antiquity and the ensuing rapidity with which these notions infiltrated and cross-fertilized one another has repeatedly attracted the scholarly interest. The understanding of myth as a phenomenon imbued with social and historical nuances allows for more than one methodological approaches. Within the wider context of interdisciplinary exchange of ideas, the present volume returns to origins, as it traces and registers the association and interaction between myth and history in various literary genres in Greek and Roman antiquity (i.e. an era when the scientific definitions of and distinctions between myth and history had not yet been perceived as such, let alone fully shaped and implemented), providing original ideas, new interpretations and (re)evaluations of key texts and less well-known passages, close readings, and catholic overviews. The twenty-four chapters of this volume expand from Greek epos to lyric poetry, historiography, dramatic poetry and even beyond, to genres of Roman era and late antiquity. It is the editors' hope that this volume will appeal to students and academic researchers in the areas of classics, social and political history, archaeology, and even social anthropology.

    Abstract: Historians have become increasingly interested in material culture as both a category of analysis and as a teaching tool. And yet the profession tends to be suspicious of things; words are its stock-in-trade. What new insights can historians gain about the past by thinking about things? A central object (and consequence) of modern warfare is the radical destruction and transformation of the material world. And yet we know little about the role of material culture in the history of war and forced displacement: objects carried in flight; objects stolen on battlefields; objects expropriated, reappropriated, and remembered.Objects of War illuminates the ways in which people have used things to grapple with the social, cultural, and psychological upheavals wrought by war and forced displacement. Chapters consider theft and pillaging as strategies of conquest; soldiers' relationships with their weapons; and the use of clothing and domestic goods by prisoners of war, extermination camp inmates, freed people, and refugees to make claims and to create a kind of normalcy.While studies of migration and material culture have proliferated in recent years, as have histories of the Napoleonic, colonial, World Wars, and postcolonial wars, few have focused on the movement of people and things in times of war across two centuries.     Abstract: Leading scholars use the lenses of history, sociology, political science, psychology, philosophy, religion, and literature to examine, disentangle, and remove the disguises of the many forms of antisemitism and anti-Zionism that have inhabited or targeted the English-speaking world in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. Although in principle one can be anti-Zionist without being antisemitic, authors document and trace the numerous parallels and continuities between the hoary tropes attached for centuries to the Jewish people and the more recent vilifications of the Jewish state. They evaluate—and discredit—many of the central claims anti-Zionists have promoted in their relentless effort to delegitimize the Jewish state. They show how mainstream anti-racist communities, courses and texts have ignored—or denied—the antisemitic hatred that pervades much of the Muslim world.

    Abstract: For the analysis of contemporary historical pop-cultural phenomena, a surplus of transnational perspectives are often asserted, but rarely backed up empirically. This volume, however, gathers together case studies that without exception analyze multiple countries and are engaged in forceful historical comparisons, as well as histories of transfer and intertwinement. They focus on music and film, television and radio, magazines and comics, youth culture and fashion.     Abstract: 25 Jahre Mauerfall und zehn Jahre EU-Osterweiterung - diese politisch bedeutsamen Ereignisse haben auch die historische Osteuropaforschung grundlegend verändert. Wie sehr die Beiträger_innen des Bandes infolgedessen durch die Etablierung der Historischen Kulturwissenschaften, die Öffnung vorher verschlossener Archive und nicht zuletzt vorher ungekannter Reisefreiheiten profitiert haben, zeigen ihre Stadtgeschichten: Auf der Basis kulturhistorischer Fragestellungen etwa zur Musealisierung und Monumentalisierung, zur Repräsentativität oder zur Multikulturalität im osteuropäischen urbanen Raum geben sie Einblicke in die Geschichte von Metropolen wie Prag, Baku, Moskau oder St. Petersburg und regionalen Zentren wie Lemberg oder Irkutsk
    Abstract: 25 years after the fall of the wall and ten years after the eastward expansion of the EU - these politically significant events have also fundamentally altered historical research on Eastern Europe. The extent to which the contributors to this volume have benefitted as a result of the establishment of historical cultural studies, the opening of previously sealed archives and more importantly, from a hitherto unknown freedom of movement, is shown in their urban histories: based on cultural-historical interrogations into »museification« and monumentalization, on representativeness or multiculturalism in the Eastern European urban sphere, they offer insights into the history of metropolises like Prague, Baku, Moscow or St Petersburg, and regional centers like Lviv or Irkutsk

    Abstract: The significant changes in early modern German marriage practices included many unions that violated some taboo. That taboo could be theological and involve the marriage of monks and nuns, or refer to social misalliances as when commoners and princes (or princesses) wed. Equally transgressive were unions that crossed religious boundaries, such as marriages between Catholics and Protestants, those that violated ethnic or racial barriers, and those that broke kin-related rules. Taking as a point of departure Martin Luther's redefinition of marriage, the contributors to this volume spin out the multiple ways that the Reformers' attempts to simplify and clarify marriage affected education, philosophy, literature, high politics, diplomacy, and law. Ranging from the Reformation, through the ages of confessionalization, to the Enlightenment, Mixed Matches addresses the historical complexity of the socio-cultural institution of marriage.

    Abstract: Ethnographers helped to perceive, to understand and also to shape imperial as well as Soviet Russia's cultural diversity. This volume focuses on the contexts in which ethnographic knowledge was created. Usually, ethnographic findings were superseded by imperial discourse: Defining regions, connecting them with ethnic origins and conceiving national entities necessarily implied the mapping of political and historical hierarchies. But beyond these spatial conceptualizations the essays particularly address the specific conditions in which ethnographic knowledge appeared and changed. On the one hand, they turn to the several fields into which ethnographic knowledge poured and materialized, i.e., history, historiography, anthropology or ideology. On the other, they equally consider the impact of the specific formats, i.e., pictures, maps, atlases, lectures, songs, museums, and exhibitions, on academic as well as non-academic manifestations.

    Abstract: Current ecological and environmental problems put the concept of nature more and more into the center of debates. This book presents analyses and case studies that explore the function and meaning of nature within the process of modernization at the epochal threshold of 1900 anew. In a trans-national, Northern European comparison, the contributions address the medial representations of nature (in literature, philosophy, film, photography) as well as the colonization of space (in tourism, travels, sports, environmental and cultural heritage protection). Thus, this volume also offers stimuli for the new theoretical-methodical approaches of eco-criticism and spatial sociology

    Abstract: Between 1880 and 1914 several million Eastern Europeans migrated West. Much is known about the immigration experience of Jews, Poles, Greeks, and others, notably in the United States. Yet, little is known about the paths of mass migration across "green borders" via European railway stations and ports to destinations in other continents. Ellis Island, literally a point of passage into America, has a much higher symbolic significance than the often inconspicuous departure stations, makeshift facilities for migrant masses at European railway stations and port cities, and former control posts along borders that were redrawn several times during the twentieth century. This volume focuses on the journeys of Jews from Eastern Europe through Germany, Britain, and Scandinavia between 1880 and 1914. The authors investigate various aspects of transmigration including medical controls, travel conditions, and the role of the steamship lines; and also review the rise of migration restrictions around the globe in the decades before 1914.

    Abstract: In many ways what is identified today as "cultural globalization" in Eastern Europe has its roots in the Cold War phenomena of samizdat ("do-it-yourself" underground publishing) and tamizdat (publishing abroad). This volume offers a new understanding of how information flowed between East and West during the Cold War, as well as the much broader circulation of cultural products instigated and sustained by these practices. By expanding the definitions of samizdat and tamizdat from explicitly political print publications to include other forms and genres, this volume investigates the wider cultural sphere of alternative and semi-official texts, broadcast media, reproductions of visual art and music, and, in the post-1989 period, new media. The underground circulation of uncensored texts in the Cold War era serves as a useful foundation for comparison when looking at current examples of censorship, independent media, and the use of new media in countries like China, Iran, and the former Yugoslavia.  ...

    Abstract: Does capitalism emerging in Eastern Europe need as solid ethnic or spiritual foundations as some other "Great Transformations" in the past? Apparently, one can become an actor of the new capitalist game without belonging to the German, Jewish, or, to take a timely example, Chinese minority. Nor does one have to go to a Protestant church every Sunday, repeat Confucian truisms when falling asleep, or study Adam Smith's teachings on the virtues of the market in a business course. He/she may just follow certain quasi-capitalist routines acquired during communism and import capitalist culture (more exactly, various capitalist cultures) in the form of down-to-earth cultural practices embedded in freshly borrowed economic and political institutions. Does capitalism come from outside? Why do then so many analysts talk about hybridization? This volume offers empirical insights into the current cultural history of the Eastern European economies in three fields: entrepreneurship, state governance and economic science. The chapters are based on large case studies prepared in the framework of an eight-country research project (funded by the European Commission, and directed jointly by the Center for Public Policy at the Central European University and the Institute for Human Sciences) on East-West cultural encounters in the ex-communist economies.

    Abstract: Stadt und Vergnügen waren um 1900 eng miteinander verbunden. Tanzveranstaltungen und Theater, Kino und Kneipen boten den Großstadtbewohnern vielfältige Möglichkeiten, ihrem Bedürfnis nach Freizeitgestaltung und Unterhaltung nachzugehen. Gleichzeitig prägten die Vergnügungsangebote zunehmend das Stadtbild.Ausgehend von der Beobachtung, dass die Herausbildung einer modernen Vergnügungskultur nicht ohne die Urbanisierung gedacht werden kann und dass die Vergnügungskultur eine wichtige Rolle im Prozess der Anpassung an das Leben in der Großstadt spielte, untersucht der Band die Wechselwirkungen zwischen Metropole und Vergnügen um 1900. Das Spektrum der Beiträge reicht vom Vergnügungsviertel bis zum Kiezvergnügen, von Mode auf der Theaterbühne und politischen Massenveranstaltungen bis hin zu Alpenbällen und Musikautomaten

    Abstract: Die Bielefelder Sozialgeschichte gehört unbestritten zu den prägenden Programmen der deutschen Geschichtswissenschaft in der zweiten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts. Seit den frühen 1980er Jahren haben verschiedene Richtungen - von der Alltagsgeschichte bis zu den zahlreichen »Turns« - zu Recht auf die Leerstellen und Grenzen der Sozialgeschichte Bielefelder Provenienz aufmerksam gemacht. Doch noch heute lohnt sich der Blick auf die »Bielefelder Schule«: Sie stellt nicht nur ein wichtiges Element der jüngeren Geschichte des Fachs dar. Die Auseinandersetzung mit dieser Forschungstradition erlaubt zugleich in systematischer Hinsicht zu fragen, wie sozialhistorische Ansätze in die Forschungen jüngerer, stärker kulturwissenschaftlich geprägter Historikerinnen und Historiker integriert werden können.Der Reader präsentiert die wichtigsten programmatischen Texte der »Bielefelder Schule« ebenso wie die ihrer Kritiker.     Abstract: Dieses Buch deutet die Rituale und Praktiken der Freimaurerbruderschaft als Cultural Performance. Anhand von reichhaltigem historischen Material kann gezeigt werden, dass die freimaurerischen Praktiken in der Perspektive der kultur- und sozialwissenschaftlichen Konzepte der »Performativität« und des »Habitus« genuin soziale Formen der inkorporierenden Einübung einer bürgerlichen Habitusethik sind.Die Analyse dieser rituellen Form der sozialen und körperorientierten Habitusprägung in der entstehenden Commercial Society macht das historische Phänomen als Teil der Kultur- und Gesellschaftsgeschichte sichtbar - und geht damit über die bekannten pauschalen Verweise auf die geistesgeschichtliche Nähe zu Ideen der Aufklärung hinaus

In der interdisziplinären Perspektive der Beiträge zeigt sich der Streit als kulturelle Form der Austragung antagonistischer Positionen in Geschichte und Gegenwart. Es wird eine Annäherung an eine eigenständige kultur- und sozialtheoretische Figur ermöglicht, die mehr ist als lediglich ein Epiphänomen des Konflikts

    Abstract: This groundbreaking collection provides the first comparative history of gender and emancipation in the Atlantic world. Bringing together essays on the United States, Brazil, Cuba, Puerto Rico, West Africa and South Africa, and the Francophone and Anglophone Caribbean, it shows that emancipation was a profoundly gendered process, produced through connections between race, gender, sexuality, and class. Contributors from the United States, Canada, Europe, the Caribbean, and Brazil explore how the processes of emancipation involved the re-creation of gender identities-the production of freedmen and freedwomen with different rights, responsibilities, and access to citizenship.Offering detailed analyses of slave emancipation in specific societies, the contributors discuss all of the diverse actors in emancipation: slaves, abolitionists, free people of color, state officials, and slave owners. Whether considering the construction of a postslavery masculine subjectivity in Jamaica, the work of two white U.S. abolitionist women with the Freedmen's Bureau after the Civil War, freedwomen's negotiations of labor rights in Puerto Rico, slave women's contributions to the slow unraveling of slavery in French West Africa, or the ways that Brazilian abolitionists deployed representations of femininity as virtuous and moral, these essays demonstrate the gains that a gendered approach offers to understanding the complex processes of emancipation. Some chapters also explore theories and methodologies that enable a gendered reading of postslavery archives.     Abstract: Von »Ereignis« und »Ereignissen« ist überall dort die Rede, wo über das Einmalige, Neue, noch nicht Dagewesene gesprochen werden soll, über eine Revolution, einen Epochenbruch, eine Erfindung, eine unvorhergesehene Wendung. Das Wort kann als Synonym der Aporien begriffen werden, denen das Nachdenken über die Zeit heute ausgesetzt ist. Zugleich stellt die Rede vom Ereignis heute eines der mächtigsten Ideologeme der Kultur- und Medienindustrie dar. Spätestens seit dem 11. September 2001 taucht der Begriff »Ereignis« häufig in der politischen Rhetorik auf.
