    Abstract: "Black Neo-Victoriana is the first book-length study on contemporary re-imaginations of Blackness in the long nineteenth century. Located at the intersections of postcolonial studies, Black studies, and neo-Victorian criticism, this interdisciplinary collection engages with the global trend to reimagine and rewrite Black Victorian subjectivities that have been continually marginalised in both historical and cultural discourses. Contributions cover a range of media, from novels and drama to film, television and material culture, and draw upon cultural formations such as Black fandom, Black dandyism, or steamfunk. The book evidences how neo-Victorian studies benefits from reading re-imaginations of the long nineteenth century vis-à-vis Black epistemologies, which unhinge neo-Victorianism's dominant spatial and temporal axes and reroute them to conceive of the (neo-)Victorian through Blackness"

Contemporary theorists argue that the family should be democratized to reflect the egalitarian ideals of the liberal state, but Koganzon argues that this desire for 'congruence' between familial and state authority was originally illiberal in origin, advanced by theorists of absolute sovereignty like Bodin and Hobbes.

Disclosing prejudices about whiteness, homosexuality and democracy in the »staged society«, he claims the concept of relation as an adequate framework for the embodiment of »profane democracy« understood in Agambian terms.     Abstract: Die Hochschule ist als Teil der globalisierten Welt auch ein Ort migrationsgesellschaftlicher Mehrsprachigkeit. Die diskursive Verhandlung dieses Themenkomplexes bewegt sich häufig zwischen einer kompensatorischen Perspektive mit dem Fokus auf die deutsche Sprache und dem Blick auf Internationalisierungsprozesse, der zunächst die englische Sprache in den Vordergrund rücken lässt. Die sprachliche Vielfalt, die Studierende selbst mit an die Hochschulen bringen, und deren Potential ist dagegen seltener Gegenstand der Betrachtung. In dieser Studie stehen die Perspektiven von Studierenden an Hochschulen in Deutschland im Mittelpunkt, die ihren Alltag selbst als mehrsprachig beschreiben. Wie gestalten sich ihre sprachlichen Spielräume zwischen der eigenen lebensweltlichen Mehrsprachigkeit und hochschulischen Sprachverhältnissen? Dieser Frage wird auf der Basis von qualitativen Interviewdaten nachgegangen. Besonderes Interesse gilt dabei den Mustern des studentischen Sprachgebrauchs im Hochschulkontext und damit verbundenen Zukunftsaspirationen sowie der Frage, wie Studierende ihre Sprachpraxis erleben.

    Abstract: "World Englishes on the Web focuses on linguistic practices at the intersection of international migration and social media, examining the language repertoires of Nigerians living in the United States, and their negotiations of identity and authenticity on a Nigerian web forum. Based on a large corpus of informal, multilingual, interactive, online writing, this book describes how diasporic Nigerians employ African-American Vernacular English, Nigerian English, Nigerian Pidgin, and ethnic Nigerian languages in an online community of practice. The project combines corpus linguistic methods-relying on a corpus management tool custom-made for web forum data-with ethnographically-informed qualitative analyses of morphosyntactic, lexical, and orthographic features, and immigrants' language attitudes and ideologies. It is relevant particularly for linguists and other social scientists interested in World Englishes, the sociolinguistics of globalization and computer-mediated communication, corpus linguistics, and pidgin and creole languages"--

    Abstract: Ezra Pound, T. S. Eliot, and Wyndham Lewis have all, to varying degrees, been the subject of studies that explore their ideology. All too often, however, these studies have not tackled the issue adequately, limiting their analytical approach to fascism or other phenomena such as anti-Semitism. Frequently, they have also sought to exculpate these writers or to normalise their political tendencies in an effort to circumnavigate the dilemma of how to address the paradox of right-wing artists who are both harbingers and opponents of the imagined trajectory of progressive modernity. This interdisciplinary study analyses the connections between literary Modernism and right-wing ideology. Moreover, it is the first academic study to explore the reception of these Modernist authors by today's far right, seeking to understand in what ways they use strategic readings of Modernist texts to legitimise right-wing ideology. By raising fundamental questions about the relationship between aesthetics and politics, this study ultimately challenges its readers to see their cultural practices as political. It wants to make visible and problematize the interdependencies of right-wing ideology and cultural production as well as reception in order to explain the (far) Right as a phenomenon deeply rooted in European history and cultural development. It thus lays bare the misconceptions, the gaps as well as the complicity in the debate about right-wing ideology in literature

    Abstract: How did Britons understand their relationship with the East in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries? James Watt's new study remaps the literary history of British Orientalisms between 1759, the 'year of victories' in the Seven Years' War, and 1835, when T. B. Macaulay published his polemical 'Minute on Indian Education'. It explores the impact of the war on Britons' cultural horizons, and the different and shifting ways in which Britons conceived of themselves and their nation as 'open' to the East across this period. Considering the emergence of new forms and styles of writing in the context of an age of empire and revolution, Watt examines how the familiar 'Eastern' fictions of the past were adapted, reworked, and reacted against. In doing so he illuminates the larger cultural conflict which animated a nation debating with itself about its place in the world and relation to its others

    Abstract: Europa ist in der Krise. Angesichts Brexit, dringender Flüchtlings- und Einwanderungsfragen, Diskussionen über den Ausschluss insolventer Länder und dem demokratischen Defizit der EU ist dieser Befund zu einem Allgemeinplatz geworden. Als einen Weg aus der Krise schlagen Politiker_innen, EU-Beamt_innen und Intellektuelle oftmals die Stärkung des Zusammenhalts durch die Rückbesinnung auf die angenommene gemeinsame Geschichte Europas und eine daraus erwachsene kulturelle Identität vor. Dieser Herausforderung stellen sich zunehmend auch aktuelle Nationalmuseen in Europa, indem sie es sich zur Aufgabe machen, sich zu europäisieren: sie setzen es sich zum Ziel, nicht mehr nur die Nation und ihre Geschichte, sondern Europa und europäische Geschichte zu zeigen. Diese "Museen zwischen Nation und Europa" untersucht das Buch aus medienwissenschaftlicher Perspektive. Anhand dreier aktueller Fallstudien aus Deutschland, Polen und Frankreich (Deutsches Historisches Museum Berlin, Europäisches Solidarność Zentrum Danzig, Musée des civilisations de l'Europe et de la Méditerranée Marseille) geht es den Fragen nach, wie diese Museen Europa und seine Geschichte konstruieren, und was Europa und europäisch in ihren musealen Inszenierungen bedeute. Welche Vorstellungen Europas bringen die Medien der Ausstellungen hervor? Wen und was zeigen sie als europäisch, wer gehört dagegen in den musealen Inszenierungen nicht zu Europa? Die Studie zeigt, dass die Europäisierung nationaler Museen auf starke nationale und strukturelle Widerstände stößt.     Abstract: Monsters have taken many forms across time and cultures, yet within these variations, monsters often evoke the same paradoxical response: disgust and desire. We simultaneously fear monsters and take pleasure in seeing them, and their role in human culture helps to explain this apparent contradiction. Monsters are created in order to delineate where the acceptable boundaries of action and emotion exist. However, while killing the monster allows us to cast out socially unacceptable desires, the prevalence of monsters in both history and fiction reveals humanity’s desire to see and experience the forbidden. We seek, write about, and display monsters as both a warning and wish fulfilment, and monsters, therefore, reveal that the line between desire and disgust is often thin. Looking across genres, subjects, and periods, this book examines what our conflicted reaction to the monster tells us about human culture

    Abstract: In Zeiten, in denen die Komplexität gesellschaftlicher, politischer, wirtschaftlicher und technologischer Probleme zunehmend steigt, ist der Erwerb einer naturwissenschaftlichen Grundbildung für die persönliche Meinungsbildung von zentraler Bedeutung. Hierzu gehört das Erlernen von naturwissenschaftlichen Erkenntnismethoden wie dem Experimentieren. Erkenntnisse zu experimentierspezifischen Kompetenzen zeigen, dass Lernende über unterschiedliche Vorstellungen bezüglich des Experimentierens verfügen. Diese zeigen sich in unterschiedlichen Vorgehensweisen, die mehr oder weniger stark von der Vorgehensweise in realer wissenschaftlicher Forschung abweichen. Ziel der vorliegenden Studie ist eine differenzierte Erfassung und Analyse individueller Prozessstrukturen sowie prozessbezogener Niveaustufen von Experimentierprozessen Lehramtsstudierender der Biologie. Die Ergebnisse zeigen, dass die meisten Experimentierprozesse nicht, wie in idealisierten Modellen angenommen, einem linearen Prozessverlauf verlaufen, sondern wiederholte Wechsel zwischen den Experimentierphasen aufweisen. Insbesondere die Durchführung nimmt hier eine zentrale Stellung ein. Die Vernetzung der Experimentierphasen ist unterschiedlich ausgeprägt und steht in einem positiven Zusammenhang mit der Qualität eines Experimentierprozesses. Die prozessbezogenen Niveaustufen weisen Ausprägungen über alle Niveaus hinweg auf. Aus den Ergebnissen werden Hinweise zur Gestaltung von Unterricht und universitärer Lehre sowie Implikationen für die fachdidaktische Forschung abgeleitet

    Abstract: Lotta König bietet theoretische und unterrichtspraktische Überlegungen, wie im Fremdsprachenunterricht eine reflektierte Auseinandersetzung mit Geschlechternormen angeregt werden kann. Entsprechende literaturdidaktische Überlegungen werden mit den Erkenntnissen der Gender Studies zusammengeführt.     Abstract: Leona Litterst vereint in systematischer Weise die Frage, ob mittels Techniken der Synthetischen Biologie „neues Leben“ hergestellt werden kann, mit der ethischen Dimension, ob dieses hergestellt werden soll und welche Regeln dabei gelten. Hierzu stellt sie fünf Forschungsansätze der Synthetischen Biologie detailliert dar, beleuchtet deren Anspruch, „neues Leben“ herzustellen, und bewertet Risikopotentiale in ethisch-anthroporelationaler Hinsicht. Sie untersucht zentrale ethische und systematische Aspekte zu Verantwortung, den Begriffen des Spiels, des Lebens, der Natürlichkeit und Künstlichkeit sowie dem moralischen Status von Forschungsobjekten der Synthetischen Biologie. Dabei wird deutlich, dass die Möglichkeit einer Herstellung von „neuem Leben“ nicht nur eine Frage nach der technischen Umsetzung ist, sondern auch danach, wie wir mit „neuem Leben“ sowie den möglichen Chancen und Risiken der Synthetischen Biologie zukünftig umgehen wollen.     Abstract: This study is a concise introduction to Bruno Latour's Actor-Network Theory and its application in a literary analysis of urban narratives of the 21st century. We encounter well-known psycho-geographers such as Iain Sinclair and Sam Miller, and renowned authors, Patrick Neate and Suketu Mehta. Prachi More analyses these authors' accounts of vastly different cities such as London, Delhi, Mumbai, Johannesburg, New York and Tokyo. Are these urban narratives a contemporary solution to documenting an ever-evasive urban reality? If so, how do they embody "matters of concern" as Latour would have put it, laying bare modern-day "actors" and "networks" rather than reporting mere "matters of fact"? These questions are drawn into an inter-disciplinary discussion that addresses concerns and questions of epistemology, the sociology of knowledge as well as urban and documentary studies.

    Abstract: Sabine Knöner untersucht systematische Verzerrungen, die im Zusammenhang mit der Tendenz von Studierenden, Schülerinnen und Schülern stehen, bestehende Vorstellungen auch mithilfe widerlegender Daten zu bestätigen. Dafür werden kognitionspsychologische Erklärungsansätze aus dem Forschungsfeld zu intuitiven Entscheidungs- und Urteilsprozessen im menschlichen Informationsverarbeitungsprozess herangezogen. Ziel ihrer Arbeit ist es, diese vertiefenden sowie differenzierteren Erklärungsansätze der Kognitionspsychologie theoriebasiert auf die Defizite beim Umgang mit Daten zu übertragen. Die Ergebnisse aus der Aufgabenerprobung werden mit Blick auf die Untersuchungsmethode und die Inhaltsvalidität der Aufgaben diskutiert.     Abstract: Petra Duske zeigt, dass sich bilingualer Fachunterricht zur Aufrechterhaltung der Schülermotivation im Sachfach und zum Erwerb vergleichbaren Wissens wie im deutschsprachigen Biologieunterricht eignet. Der Unterrichtskontext im Sinne einer thematischen Einbettung scheint eine untergeordnete Rolle für Motivation und Wissenserwerb zu spielen. Dies sind die Ergebnisse einer vergleichenden Untersuchung mit ca. 800 Schülerinnen und Schülern anhand eines bilingualen bzw. deutschsprachigen Moduls im Fach Biologie. Die Studie kann als Entscheidungshilfe für Lehrkräfte, Schulleitungen, Bildungsadministrationen, Schülerinnen und Schülern sowie deren Eltern bei der Einführung von oder Teilnahme an bilingualen Bildungsgängen dienen.     Abstract: Das Buch stellt das aktuelle nationale Tierversuchsrecht ausführlich dar. Berücksichtigt werden dabei vor allem die Umsetzung der Richtlinie 2010/63/EU in das deutsche Tierschutzgesetz und die Neuerungen, die das nationale Tierversuchsrecht hierdurch erfahren hat. Aufgezeigt werden neben der Beurteilung vormals bestehender rechtlicher Streitpunkte, beispielsweise des Umfangs der Prüfungskompetenz der Genehmigungsbehörden, auch Fälle der unzureichenden sowie der mangelnden Umsetzung der Vorgaben der Richtlinie 2010/63/EU. Insofern werden sowohl die richtlinienkonforme Auslegung nationaler Regelungen, als auch eine unmittelbare Wirkung einzelner Richtlinienvorschriften untersucht. Schließlich wird die Verfassungsmäßigkeit bestimmter nationaler Regelungen analysiert, dies betrifft insbesondere das relative Verbot schwerst belastender Tierversuche sowie Verwendungsverbote- und beschränkungen in Bezug auf Primaten und Menschenaffen

Through an analysis of representative works by Diana Abu-Jaber, Laila Halaby, and Randa Jarrar, among others, this volume demonstrates how Arab American women's anti-racist and anti-sexist struggles inform their nuanced portrayals of Arab men.     Abstract: Post-9/11 Representations of Arab Men by Arab American Women Writers: Affirmation and Resistance examines the portrayals of Arab masculinities in novels published after September 11, 2001, by women of Arab descent in the United States. The book provides a historical account of the mainstream representations of Arab masculinities in the United States, using them as a contrast to the realities experienced by Arab men in the American diaspora. Considering the construction of male and female Arab American identities, this book illustrates the role of feminism in Arab American literature written by women and its influence on women’s depictions of Arab men. Through an analysis of representative works by Diana Abu-Jaber, Laila Halaby, and Randa Jarrar, among others, this volume demonstrates how Arab American women’s anti-racist and anti-sexist struggles inform their nuanced portrayals of Arab men. This book will be essential for professors and students of ethnic American literatures in general and Arab American studies in particular, as well as for those interested in women’s studies and masculinity studies

    Abstract: This book investigates the cultural and intercultural aspects of English as a Lingua Franca (ELF). Authors discuss how ‘culture’ and the ‘intercultural’ can be understood, theorised and operationalised in ELF, and how the concepts can be integrated into formats of ELF-oriented learning and teaching.     Abstract: Am Anfang war Tacitus: Der römische Historiker schildert in seiner ›Germa­nia‹ die Gebiete östlich des Rheins wenig vorteilhaft als »durch Wälder grauenerre­gend«. Seine ›Annalen‹ berichten über eine Schlacht im »Teutoburger Wald« zwischen Römern und Germanen, deren Anführer Hermann der Cherusker zum »Be­freier Germaniens« geworden sei. Als dann im Zuge der Befreiungskriege um 1800 Anfänge eines deutschen Nationalbewusstseins entstehen, besinnen sich Dichter und Denker genau auf diesen anti-urbanen, naturnahen Waldmythos. Der Wald als unverbildete Natur wird zum deutschen Ideal – im Gegensatz zur verbildeten, städtischen Zivilisation Frankreichs. Dieser konstitutive Gegensatz bleibt prägend – bis hin zum Nationalsozialismus. Zechner widmet diesem Urtopos der Deutschen eine eindrucksvolle Studie und zeichnet dessen Ausprägungen von der Romantik bis zum Nationalsozialismus nach. Eine große Ideengeschichte, die erstmals das Identitätskonzept des deutschen »Waldvolkes« kritisch rekonstruiert.

    Abstract: In 1888 the name Jack the Ripper entered public consciousness with the brutal murders of women in the East End of London. The murderer was never caught, yet film and television depicts a killer with a recognisable costume, motive and persona. This book examines the origins of the screen presentation of the four key elements associated with the murders -Jack the Ripper, the victims, the detective and Whitechapel. Nineteenth-century history, art and literature, psychoanalytical theories of Freud and Jung and feminist film theory are all used to deconstruct the representation of Jack the Ripper on screen

    Abstract: Die Darwinsche Evolutionstheorie hat die These populär gemacht, dass der Mensch vom Affen abstamme, obwohl Darwin selbst davon kaum gesprochen hat. Insbesondere innerhalb der deutschen Anthropologie wurde diese Idee im 19. Jahrhundert aufgeregt debattiert. Die moderne Anthropologie konstruierte sich ihren Gegenstand von nun an neu. Wie es dazu kam, steht im Zentrum dieses Buches. Es verfolgt die Karriere einer These, die in Wissenschaft, Literatur und Kunst gleichermaßen zu Abwehrreaktionen und zu Begeisterung führte: Ab jetzt steht fest, dass die Frage danach, was der Mensch ist, nur mit Blick auf seine mehr oder weniger unheimlichen Doubles gestellt werden kann. Wie die Akteure und Medien der Evolutionstheorie mit dieser Erkenntnis umgingen, zeigt „Der Mensch, der Affe“.

With an emphasis on the dual meaning of "domestic," referring to both the family home and the nation, this study traces the important trope of mobility that runs through the "American" century. Juxtaposing canonical fiction with popular, and low-budget independent films with Classical Hollywood, Leyda brings the analytic tools of American cultural and literary studies to bear on an eclectic array of primary texts as she builds a case for the significance of mobility in the study of the United States
