Abstract: In sub-Saharan Africa a number of national theatres were established from the 1950s onwards. Their construction involved British colonial administration, American philanthropy and Chinese development aid. While each history is particular, they share certain common experiences that can be read as an allegory of postcolonial history. This narrative is bracketed by the seemingly contradictory terms modular modernity and cultural heritage: modernity with its promise of the new, cultural heritage with its ideology of preservation. While apparently oppositional terms, they are in fact two points on a continuum of Western and Asian influence on the African continent. There is a direct through-line connecting modular modernity with cultural heritage discourse of the post-Cold War period. This chapter’s main example is the National Theatre in Uganda which can read as a test case of shifting discourses and agendas in the context of the Cultural Cold War and its long-term implications

Abstract: Despite the non-governmental status of the UNESCO-affiliated International Theatre Institute (ITI), its organisational structures enabled its member states to use it as an instrument of cultural representation for national and Cold War purposes. In the late 1970s and early 1980s, the East German national centre of the ITI hosted several seminars and colloquia for theatre artists from the Global South. These events focussed heavily on playwright Bertolt Brecht as a figurehead of East German theatre since his plays and theories were of great interest to the international theatre community. This chapter examines how the GDR centre used the international community of the ITI to find and contact artistically and politically suitable participants from emerging countries and how they conceptualized and adjusted their presentation of Brecht’s work and methods not only according to their participants’ needs, but also to build a specific national brand of soft power designed to appeal to artists and cultural policy makers in the non-aligned countries: the GDR and the East German artists as partners and supporters of nation building

Abstract: The introduction outlines the main trajectories of the Cultural Cold War, starting with the revelations in the late 1960s that the CIA was using various front organizations to fund culture abroad as a way to combat Soviet influence. It adds to the familiar narrative by showing that the Cultural Cold War needs to be re-evaluated on the one hand by focusing on US philanthropy in the postcolonial world. On the other hand there is a need to examine Soviet and East European initiatives in the newly independent nations from the perspective of cultural diplomacy and soft power. The activities on both sides of the Iron Curtain testify to the recognition on the part of US policy makers that the emerging postcolonial world needed substantial investment in cultural infrastructure if it was to resist the blandishments of socialism, to which many of its leaders were ideologically attracted, if not aligned. The final section outlines the four sections that structure the volume: Networks and Institutions; Cultural Diplomacy; Artists and Agency; and Cultures of Things

Abstract: Emerging from the superpowers’ covert attempts to counter their political and ideological influence without direct military confrontations, the Cold War was also enacted in the cultural sphere of many third world countries, especially Africa, which became a ‘site of encounter’ for the staging of US-Soviet theatre of influence. In West Africa, Ghana and Nigeria were strategically adopted as epicentres of western cultural philanthropy through the funding of cultural institutions and networks of selected artists as well as the organisation, sponsorship and hosting of collaborative artistical events covering drama, music, dance, and the visual arts. This chapter shall discuss selected American-sponsored cultural events and programmes in these territories as a sub-set of the cultural Cold War dynamics directed towards the ‘winning of hearts and minds’ as well as the institutionalisation of liberal values within these emerging societies. Events such as the 1961 Lagos Festival (sponsored by the American Society of African Culture) and the 1967 Ghana Festival of Arts (sponsored by the United States Information Service) shall be examined to ascertain, from a comparative perspective, the underlying structures of collaboration, organisation and reception of these events within the Cold War context

Abstract: Maverick Movies tells the improbable story of New Line Cinema, a company that cut a remarkable path through the American film industry and movie culture. Founded in 1967 as an art film distributor, New Line made a small fortune running John Waters’s Pink Flamingos at midnight screenings in the 1970s and found reliable returns with the Nightmare on Elm Street franchise in the 1980s. By 2001, the company competed with the major Hollywood studios and reached global box office success with the Lord of the Rings franchise. Blurring boundaries between high and low culture, between independent film and Hollywood, and between the margins and the mainstream, New Line Cinema epitomizes Hollywood’s shift in focus from the mass audience fostered by the classic studios to the multitude of niche audiences sought today. “At long last, a top film scholar takes a deep dive into New Line Cinema’s remarkable and most unlikely history. Mining a wealth of primary sources and trade press accounts, and with access to New Line’s renegade founder Bob Shaye himself, Daniel Herbert deftly recounts the company’s rags-to-riches saga and firmly situates New Line as one of the most important Hollywood studios in the past half century.” — THOMAS SCHATZ, author of The Genius of the System: Hollywood Filmmaking in the Studio Era “Exhibiting the same archival dexterity he brought to Videoland, Herbert reconsiders how New Line’s eclecticism both predicted and reflected broader changes in US film culture of the late twentieth century. This book will revitalize the field of distribution studies.” — CAETLIN BENSON-ALLOTT, author of The Stuff of Spectatorship: Material Cultures of Film and Television “Focusing on New Line Cinema, an indie outfit rooted in 1960s college-campus film culture that in the 1990s briefly became the tail that wagged the dog at the WB, Herbert crafts a compelling road map of the volatile movie industry of postclassical Hollywood.” — JON LEWIS, author of Road Trip to Nowhere: Hollywood Encounters the Counterculture

Abstract: This book analyses bordering practices and their negative effects as well as the many creative and often grassroots ways in which borders are resisted and reinvented. From the hostile environment to Brexit and the Nationality and Borders Bill, the UK border regime has become increasingly strict and complex, operating both at the edge of the state and within everyday life in unprecedented ways. At the same time, this securitisation approach is often contested, and its effects are fought daily by many groups and individuals. This book explores this tension, documenting and analysing how the contemporary UK border is imagined, constructed, deconstructed, and reconstructed in multiple ways. To draw together the different pieces that compose this evolving and conflicting landscape, this book uses the concept of "borderscapes", which views borders as sites of multiple tensions between hegemonic, non-hegemonic, and counter-hegemonic imaginaries and practices. This lens enables contributors to draw a multifocal overview of the UK border that includes the different human and material actors that form it, the spaces and practices they shape, and the imaginaries and counter-imaginaries that emerge from their conflictual encounters. Bringing together contributions by researchers from a variety of disciplines, this book will be of interest to scholars and students in the fields of migration and border studies, refugee studies, human geography, criminology, sociology, and anthropology

Abstract: Cultural Cold War, decolonization, postcolonial studies, cultural diplomacy, national theatre
Abstract: "This volume explores how the Cultural Cold War played out in Africa and Asia in the context of decolonization. Both the USA and the Soviet Union as well as East European states undertook significant efforts to influence cultural life in the newly independent, postcolonial world. The different forms of influence are the subject of this book. The contributions are grouped around four topic headings. "Networks and Institutions" looks at the various ways Western-style theatre became institutionalized in the decolonial world, especially Africa. "Cultural Diplomacy" focuses on the activities of the Soviet Union in India in the late 1950s and 1960s in the very different arenas of book publishing and the circus. "Artists and Agency" explores how West African filmmakers (Ousmane Sembene and Abderrahmane Sissako) and European authors (Brecht and Ibsen) were harnessed for different kinds of Cold War strategies. Finally, the section "Cultures of Things" investigates how everyday objects such as books and iconic theatre buildings became suffused with affect, nostalgia and ideology. This book will be of interest for students of the Cold War, postcolonial studies, theatre, film and literature"--

Abstract: Klappentext: The Routledge Companion to History and the Moving Image takes an interdisciplinary approach to understanding history in moving images. It engages this popular and dynamic field that has evolved rapidly from film and television to digital streaming into the age of user-created content. The volume addresses moving image history through a theoretical lens; modes and genres; representation, race, and identity; and evolving forms and formats. It brings together a range of scholars from across the globe who specialize in film and media studies, cultural studies, history, philosophy of history, and education. Together, the chapters provide a necessary contemporary analysis that covers new developments and questions that arise from the shift to digital screen culture. The book examines technological and ethical concerns stemming from today's media landscape, but it also considers the artificial construction of the boundaries between professional expertise and amateur production. Each contributor?s unique approach highlights the necessity of engaging with moving images for the academic discipline of history. The collection, written for a global audience, offers accessible discussions of historiography and a compelling resource for advanced undergraduates and postgraduates in history, film and media studies, and communications.

Abstract: This book analyses the social relations between the Malvezzi lineage and the College of Spain in Bologna. The apparently strange symbiosis between a family of the urban oligarchy and a secular university college can be explained in the context of the creation of factions favourable to the Houses of Austria and Valois, which polarised Italian political life. Thus, the college, which participated in the administrative structures of the monarchy, became part of a Hispanophile circuit created in Bologna and led by the Malvezzi family. The aim of these affinity networks was the social promotion of their male leaders through political and military service to the Spanish monarchs. From the precedents in the kingdom of Naples, we move on to the articulation of a philo-Habsburg party in Bologna that extended its influence beyond the city, and which counted on the College of Spain and several of its collegiates throughout the 16th century. In this way, the foundations of the Malvezzi's local power are integrated into the Italian philo-Spanish networks, combining the urban, regional and international scales. A study that relies on Network Analysis in order to properly interpret the involvement of the college and the personal interests of each of the Italian leaders involved. Finally, it addresses questions related to symbolic capital, attempting to unravel the fundamental points of the hispanophilic narrative elaborated by the Malvezzi family and the collaboration of the College of Spain in this ideological enterprise. This contribution not only broadens our knowledge of the phenomenon of philo-Spanish factions in Renaissance Italy, but also allows us to interpret the role played by a university college in a city where, unlike Rome, Naples or Milan, there were no centres of reference for the Spanish Monarchy

Abstract: From early in the modern history of the Marine Corps, The Basic School (TBS) has played an enormously important role in acculturating Marine officers in the profession of arms. Author Jennifer Mazzara’s exhaustive and detailed research, which included examining the curricula of prewar TBS, shows that the TBS product, the Marine lieutenant, was fundamental to the early victories of the Second World War. As the only basic-level post-commissioning school in the United States that imparts a generalist education, rather than specialist training, TBS is unique among the military schools operated by the U.S. armed forces. Its distinctiveness stems from two primary features: its structure, and what it provides to its graduates. This history reveals TBS’s essential qualities during the interwar period, but it also illuminates the timeless and immutable reality and necessity of this institution that has bound generations of Marine officers to each other and to the Corps

Abstract: Every civilization has developed different forms of knowledge and techniques to manage and exploit water, an essential element for human life, but also to defend itself from the threats that can derive from it. In preindustrial times, the need to manage such a precious commodity led to the development of different technologies, the construction of infrastructures, the creation of special judiciaries, but it also fuelled conflicts between subjects who claimed privileged or exclusive access to water resources. In addition, the risks posed by the proximity of waterways or lake basins often led societies to develop prevention techniques and practices. This range of issues is at the heart of the essays collected in this volume, which examine various medium and large cities located in Central Western Europe - from the Rhine Valley to the Iberian Peninsula, from Paris to Palermo - between the fourteenth and the nineteenth centuries

Abstract: This open access book suggests new ways of reading nineteenth-century African American literature environmentally. Combining insights from ecocriticism, African American studies, and Foucauldian theory, Matthias Klestil examines forms of environmental knowledge in African American writing ranging from antebellum slave narratives and pamphlets to Charlotte Forten’s journals, Booker T. Washington’s autobiographies, and Charles W. Chesnutt’s short fiction. The volume highlights how literary forms of environmental knowledge in the African American tradition were shaped by the histories of slavery and race, mainstream environmental writing traditions, and African American forms of expression and intertextuality. Turning to the Underground Railroad, debates over education and home-building, and the aesthetics of the pastoral and the georgic, Environmental Knowledge, Race, and African American Literature provides an original perspective on the African American ecoliterary tradition that uncovers new facets of canonical and understudied texts and offers new directions for ecocriticism and African American studies

Abstract: In recent decades, the importance of rural lordship in the history of Italy in the late Middle Ages has been reconsidered and reassessed. On the basis of a wealth of archive documentation, this volume offers a systematic and reasoned description of the political, economic, social and cultural aspects of rural lordship in a territory located “on the borders of Italy'” the episcopal principality of Trento in the 14th and 15th centuries. From their castles scattered in the alpine valleys, at the foot of the mountains, the noble families of Trento looked increasingly towards Vienna and the Habsburg empire; in their relations with the peasant world, they set up in the 15th century balances of power destined to remain almost intact throughout the modern age, until the end of the First World War

Abstract: The volume aims to fit into the existing studies in Italy and Portugal on the Portuguese 18th century, however describing the 18th century from a new, inclusive (and no more separatist), point of view between Portugal, Macao (in the south of China) and Brazil. The related insight does not have the claim to completeness, but offers an overview, allowing the lector to range over three Lusitanian territories. According to this principle of completeness, the volume is divided in three chapters within which historical, iconographical and literary themes of the 18th century are illustrated. The volume higlights historical facts, literary works, also through an European view of the same period, that have marked the Portuguese, Asian and Brazilian 18th century.

In such a context, along with trying to keep a balanced and methodologically-aware approach in our original research, we realized that a multi-authored work such as the present volume, with papers written by some of the major experts of Anatolian religious history, would represent an invaluable contribution to the advancement of a complex and vast field. This collection of essays is the result of the workshop Theonyms, Panthea and Syncretisms in Hittite Anatolia and Northern Syria, held at the University of Verona on 25th and 26th March 2022. Colleagues with different areas of expertise pertaining to the topic of Anatolian religions contributed to an extremely successful event

Abstract: The Valsugana, crossed by the river Brenta, is a perfect example of a 'road area'. The seigniorial families installed in this territory juggled between the bishop of Feltre and the prince-bishop of Trento, not without a certain amount of military pressure from the city lords of the Veneto region (Scaligeri, Carraresi). During the 15th century the authority of the Habsburgs asserted itself in Valsugana

Abstract: Hurrian personal names are documented among the members of the Hittite royal family starting from the time of King Tuthaliya I and they become more and more popular in the 13th century BC. The rulers of polities subordinate to Hatti, such as Karkemish and Amurru, bore Hurrian names. These names were also diffused among the inhabitants of Anatolia and Syria, as the Hittite texts and the tablets discovered at Alalah and Emar demonstrate. The greatest part of the Hurrian names is "Satznamen" in which one of the two components is a divine name. Thus, the name giving process can offer information on the spread of the Hurrian religious tradition in the regions under the Hittite political control

Abstract: The purpose of the essay is to illustrate the role of territorial ecclesiastical institutions in the organization of the Trentino lordships of the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. From a de facto hegemony and control, sometimes exercised by force, we generally pass to forms of patronage endorsed by the bishop, especially between the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. There are also chapels located inside the castle

Abstract: Already by the Late Bronze Age, culturally distinct cults of Kubaba existed throughout the region controlled by the Hittite Empire. After the fall of the empire and the fragmentation of the political landscape of the Syro-Anatolian region, these cults persisted in local contexts, developing along their own trajectories, and thus producing hypostases of the goddess with unique roles, modes of expression, and perhaps aliases. However, these local variations did not evolve in a vacuum, but in many cases through a process of interregional and intercultural interactions. This paper will examine these processes along with the resultant expressions of local cults of Kubaba, demonstrating specific trajectories for interactions between neighboring groups, along with selective adaptations and rejections of foreign cultic concepts. Preliminary results suggest an interesting convergence between these cults and certain sociolinguistic boundaries within the region, perhaps connected to communities with shared group identities

Abstract: This Open Access book carefully examines the legal and historical bases of the territory of Japan as a modern State from the Meiji period to 2002. A new preface summarizes key developments in the situation up through 2022. Japan’s current territory is stipulated by the Potsdam Declaration (1945) and the Treaty of Peace with Japan (1951); it includes the Northern Territories, the Senkaku Islands, and Takeshima. Japan has demanded the return of the Northern Territories, comprising the islands of Etorofu, Kunashiri, Shikotan and Habomai, which are occupied by Russia. China has claimed sovereignty over the Senkaku Islands, which are validly controlled by Japan; Japan has claimed sovereignty over Takeshima, which is occupied by the Republic of Korea. This book analyzes the current status of these territorial topics, drawing on historical documents and international legal precedent, and it suggests peaceful methods to address them. In discussing territorial land, sea, and air space, this work touches upon postwar concepts defining modern international law and relevant rules on these subjects—exclusive economic zones (EEZs), continental shelves, and air defense identification zones (ADIZs)—found in international treaties, such as the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), and related domestic laws

Abstract: The city and Indigenous women: Buenos Aires (1744–1820). This book addresses the presence of Indigenous women in the city of Buenos Aires between 1744 and 1820, focusing on their forms of social interaction and incorporation into urban life. The main objective is to raise the visibility of this group of urban Indigenous women and their specific living conditions. To this end, the article is centered on the observation and problematization of their ways of performing in society, on the forms of subjection to which they were exposed and on the strategies they were able to implement in response to them. In this sense, the author proposes to analyze these women from the intersection of various identity categories and the definition of their specific conditions; to characterize their presence in the city, both in the urban space as a whole, as well as in domestic groups and institutions

Abstract: The spectacular finds at Göbekli Tepe and Nevali Çorı: monolithic pillars representing stylized humans decorated with a large variety of animals, are the representation of an animist cosmos, in which animals and plants being may appear as persons, capable of will. Çatal Höyük represents a stage in which gods started to be shaped: the bull represented the Storm-god (a concept which reached the Classical period), the stag the god of the wild fauna, and female figurines symbolized the Mother-goddess. In Egypt, where gods where usually represented by animals, zoomorphism presents a continuity which ended only with the introduction of Christianity. The archaeological finds from Kaneš and the Hittite texts document an extraordinary continuity: each deity was represented by an animal, portraited in the vessel with which the celebrant (the royal couple or also a priest) reached a kind of communion with the god in drinking of the same wine and eating of the same bread

Abstract: The goddess Išḫara is attested early in cuneiform sources, and her cult can be traced back in all regions of the Ancient Near East over a period of more than 2000 years. From this point of view, it is worthwhile to look at her integration into the Hittite pantheon and try to identify changes and continuities in her figure and present some ideas about the circumstances under which the process of integration took place

Abstract: For the Hittite religion of the “Thousand Gods of Hatti” the scholarship has identified different ways of categorization: State pantheon, Local cults, “circle” and numeric group are the most widely used categories based on several criteria, such as linguistics, geography, and cultural milieu. The present paper aims to better define the state of the question about the hierarchy within the Hittite pantheon on the one hand, and to further investigate the notion of “circle” in the Hittite religion on the other, whose analysis has raised some questions and has led to different interpretations

Abstract: This study, through the use of hundreds of archival documents over a period of about two centuries, highlights the total reversal in the silk trade that occurred from the beginning of the 15th century: silk cloth no longer crossed the Mediterranean from East to West, as in previous centuries, but from West to East. Jewish, Turkish and Syrians merchants, and above all the Sublime Porte showed continued appreciation for Florentine silks. Through the analysis of the sources, every phase of such export is described in detail: the purchase of the cloths in Florence, their shipment, transport and finally the sale through Florentine correspondents in Constantinople. This flow of silks continued until the first decades of the 16th century, only to decline rapidly around the middle of the century

Abstract: The “Sun-goddess of the earth” and the less clearly defined category of “chthonic solar deities” of Hittite religion have been the objects of various studies in recent years. This paper aims to examine the significance of these categories of deities within the Hittite festival texts. Although the Sun-goddess of the earth achieves some prominence in local cult contexts, such as at Zippalanda and Nerik, she otherwise remains a marginal deity. This contrasts with her general significance in Hittite magical rituals. The chthonic solar deities represent a less tangible deity type that is associated with death and the netherworld, but that also does not attain overarching significance in the Hittite state pantheon. Finally, the paper addresses the question, to what cultural milieu can we trace the beginnings of the Sun-goddess of the earth? Efforts to identify her origins in the Hattian milieu of north-central Anatolia will be critiqued, favoring the Luwian milieu instead as the most likely from which the tradition of the Sun-goddess emerged, and later flourished in the magical traditions especially that became widespread in Hittite society of Late Bronze Age Anatolia

Abstract: The PN Kammalia-Tarawa in an Old Assyrian tablet seems to be the earliest reference of the deity Darawa. The Luwian background this deity is also apparent, e.g., from the plural form DDa-ra-ú-wa-an-zi or from those texts mentioned in CTH 457 and the etymological interpretation of the divine name to the Luwian verb tarāwi(ya)-. Since the early Middle Hittite period Darawa also found her way into the Hattian milieu and as a goddess connected with the family life, she is mentioned several times in festivals for a queen (CTH 646), but also in the Hittite Prayer to the Sun-goddess of the Netherworld (CTH 371) which is – in my opinion – the only Hittite texts mentioning Darawa within the “pantheon of the state”. Texts from the Hurrian and Kizzuwatnaean milieu (e.g., CTH 351) also refer several times to Darawa, but this is clearly the result of a secondary and marginal dissemination of the goddess. In conclusion one might say that Darawa from her Luwian background also came into contact with various milieus of the “Hittite pantheon”, functioning as a goddess providing good (and evil) to humans in everyday life

Abstract: The shift between the first and second half of the twentieth century marked a watershed. It represented the “sunset of modernity” and made tradition unattainable, thereby calling into question the very survival of poetry. This collection focuses on the work of Giuseppe Ungaretti as poet, translator, and critic, which took the lead from this fracture. As the essays gathered here show, this fracture took a specific shape in Ungaretti’s work, which was reviewed in distinct ways and had a lasting impact up to the present day, alongside twentieth-century history and poetry. The book thus offers a multifaceted picture aimed at assessing albeit provisionally the later Ungaretti’s writings and his legacy for future generations of writers

Abstract: The historical vicissitudes of the stately Trentino and Tyrolean archives are extremely complex. Archives have long been preserved in castles and aristocratic homes (and in some cases still are); until the end of the 19th century they underwent manipulations, transfers, splits linked to the functioning of the aristocratic society of the Habsburg empire, with the transfer of funds also to distant territories (Czech Republic, Bavaria, etc.). Only recently have the provincial archives of Bolzano and Trento become the most significant place for preserving the memory of the Trentino aristocracy

Abstract: In his investigation of the expansion of the cult of the “deity of the night” in Anatolia and her relationship with Ištar (Studien zu den Boğazköy-Texten 46, 259-439), J. Miller exposed the complexity of a diachronical analysis of the religious phenomenon represented by the diffusion of local “forms” or “aspects” of Ištar during the late Hittite period. However, many relevant issues concerning the role of the goddess in the Hittite dynastic pantheon, heavily influenced by Ḫurrian beliefs, and her presence in local pantheons, are still to be dealt with. As a case study, the present contribution will focus in particular on the goddess Ištar of Ḫattarina, attested together with the “Kanešite gods” Pirwa and Aškašepa in Muwatalli II’s prayer CTH 381. This unusual association may be derived from the interpretation of a local female deity traditionally defined as MUNUS.LUGAL, “queen” in Hittite local pantheons, as a form of Ištar

Abstract: Roman amphitheatres are an interesting field of investigation and allow to analyze and classify structural instability, recurrent forms of degradation and anomalies related to their accessibility. These critical issues emerge, in particular, from the study of two interesting case studies, the Roman Amphitheatre in Tarragona, Spain, and the Roman Amphitheatre of Santa Maria Capua Vetere, Italy. Through a contextual interpretation of literary, historiographic and iconographic testimonies, in the light of the expertise of architectural restoration and an in situ cognitive campaign supported by surveys, the main theoretical and design nodes connected to the restoration and enhancement of these monumental complexes are identified: knowledge, conservation, use and management, understood as scheduled maintenance and constant monitoring

Abstract: The book traces the history of revolutionary trade unionism in the aftermath of the First World War, leading to the trade union split in the CGT and the birth of the CGTU. From the rise of the oppositionists to the confederal leadership, through the strikes of 1919-1920, it traces the genesis and beginnings of the CGTU in the post-war revolutionary context. The young CGTU is then studied in its structuring, its establishment and its particularlinks with the communist galaxy. The book ends in 1927 at the height of unitary trade unionism

Abstract: At various junctures in the contemporary age, the relationship between Russia and the West has occupied a crucial place in the debates of Russian intellectual and political elites about the peculiar path and historical destiny of their country, constituting at the same time an important factor in Europe’s cultural self-definition, geohistorical contours, security system. The outbreak of the Russian-Ukrainian war has invested a question that had already become “classic” with a renewed, urgent topicality. The essays collected in the volume range over the time span from the final decades of the Tsarist Empire to the present day, focusing on topics such as Nikolai Danilevsky’s influential reflection on Rossiia i Evropa (A. Venturi), Max Weber’s analysis of Russian constitutionalism in 1905-07 (F. Fera), the pro-Westerner elements in Russian nationalism at the beginning of the twentieth century (G. Savino), the contribution of Russian emigration to the conceptualization of the West/East cleavage in the interwar period (R. Gravina), the Soviet Union in the vision of A.J. Toynbee (T. Tagliaferri), the “Ukrainian question” between the 20th and 21st centuries (R. Valle), the competition over the post-Soviet space between the Russian Federation and the European Union (M. Puleri). In the introduction, G. Cigliano dwells on the recent aspects of the relationship between Russia, Europe and the West which seem more suitable for interpreting the roots of the ongoing conflict in a historical-historiographical perspective

Abstract: Most people regard the arts as free. This publication demonstrates that Asian art and architecture are created in contexts of extreme dependence. They depend on the climate, resources, social and religious traditions and patrons. Despite these asymmetrical dependencies, artists have found freedoms for self-expression. This creative dialogue is explored in 13 chapters on material culture from India, Nepal, Tibet, the Silk Routes and China

Abstract: Rivers have always been a formative component of spaces. They serve as natural borders, mold the character of a landscape, shape how entire regions look, and often mark politically contested border areas. At the same time, river landscapes constitute spaces of contact and exchange, thereby helping spatial cultures and cultural spaces to grow. The aim of this volume is to outline the diversity of river landscapes

Abstract: Michael Agricola’s main work is the New Testament, published in 1548, a magnificent quarto volume of 700 pages with a hundred woodcuts. The basic text used was the Greek text published by Erasmus, Erasmus’ Latin translation, the Vulgate, the Luther Bible and the Swedish Bible from 1541. The 450 marginal glosses come from the Luther Bible and the Swedish Bible. In his translation, Agricola distinguished “the Holy Spirit’s own words,” i.e. H. the Bible text, the prefaces and marginal glosses, which were only intended to provide “clearer understanding”. The word of God is much more valuable than the word of man, so that the translator was closely tied to the text. A free translation was out of the question, let alone consciously improving the text. He was able to proceed more freely with the prefaces and marginal glosses. Most of the time he translated verbatim, but did not shy away from omissions, additions and changes when he deemed them appropriate. In this critical edition, Agricola’s marginal glosses on the New Testament are printed in parallel with their sources

Abstract: In order to preserve the memory of the late Prof. Dr. Fuat Sezgin (d. 2018) and to ensure that his significant scientific legacy serves as a source of inspiration for future generations, the 1st International Prof. Dr. Fuat Sezgin Symposioum on the History of Science in Islam, in collaboration with Istanbul University, Fatih Sultan Mehmet Foundation University, and the Prof. Dr. Fuat Sezgin Research Foundation for the History of Science in Islam held its inaugural conference between June 13-15, 2019. Subsequently, IU Press published 38 of the papers that had been presented at the conference. Following this, the decision was made to organize the symposium every two years, and preparations were undertaken for the 2nd International Prof. Dr. Fuat Sezgin Symposium on the History of Science in Islam, which was held on October 7-9, 2021 with the theme of “Methodological Approaches to the History of Science in Islam.” The study of the intellectual output from the Islamic world as an object of research has a nearly 200-year history. Despite the efforts of many international scholars to discover, understand, and interpret the history of Islamic sciences and determine its relevance for contemporary society, many aspects of the history of Islamic sciences still exist that remain to be clarified, such as the individuals, works, theories, networks of relations, contexts, and influences. Two key questions facing researchers in this field is how to approach the history of Islamic sciences using methodological tools and how to utilize perspectives from different disciplines. The 2nd International Prof. Dr. Fuat Sezgin Symposium on the History of Science in Islam aimed to address these issues by discussing the methodological aspects of how to research the history of Islamic sciences with a focus on the following questions: • How does the study of the history of Islamic sciences relate to the established historiography and research methods? • How can the history of Islamic sciences be periodized? Is creating a periodization that encompasses all sciences possible, or should separate periodizations be established for each individual science? • Can special methods be mentioned for studying the period following the 13th century that is commonly referred to as the post-classical period? • Has the paradigm of decline in understanding the history of Islamic sciences truly expired? • What opportunities and weaknesses do content-oriented and context-oriented approaches have in regard to analyzing scientific texts? • How should the relationship Islamic sciences have with the scientific accumulation of other civilization basins be handled? • What kind of balance should be established between continuity and originality when writing the history of scientific theories? • To what extent is the perspective presented by global history studies functional in understanding the history of Islamic sciences? • What kinds of methods and approaches should be used in teaching the history of general science at different levels, including the history of Islamic sciences? A total of 68 scholars, 41 from Turkey and 27 from other countries such as Germany, the United States of America, Belgium, France, the Netherlands, Iran, Spain, Switzerland, Egypt, Uzbekistan, Syria, Tunisia, and Greece participated in 16 parallel sessions. The symposium was conducted in a hybrid format to take into account the ongoing pandemic, with 51 of the presenters having attended the symposium in person and 17 having presented their papers online. The symposium was also broadcast live on the internet ((https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q11sAL3l5CI&t=8s and https://www. youtube. com/watch?v=jyrnK3q4Loc). This collection of papers offers readers 30 of the papers that were presented at the symposium and has been organized into five main sections: Methodological Approaches to the History of Science in Islam; Mathematical Sciences; Medicine; Natural Sciences; and Geography, Cartography, and Linguistics
Abstract: Prof. Dr. Fuat Sezgin’in (ö. 2018) hem hatırasını yaşatmak hem de ortaya koyduğu göz kamaştırıcı bilimsel mirasın gelecek nesiller için güçlü bir ilham kaynağı olmasını sağlamak amacıyla, Prof. Dr. Fuat Sezgin İslam Bilim Tarihi Araştırmaları Vakfı, İstanbul Üniversitesi ve Fatih Sultan Mehmet Vakıf Üniversitesi’nin iş birliğiyle ilki 13-15 Haziran 2019’da gerçekleştirilen I. Uluslararası Prof. Dr. Fuat Sezgin İslam Bilim Tarihi Sempozyumu’nun ardından sempozyumda sunulan tebliğlerden 38’i IU Press tarafından yayınlanmıştı (https://iupress.istanbul.edu.tr/tr/book/1-uluslararasi-prof-dr-fuat-sezgin-islam-bilim tarihi-sempozyumu-bildiriler-kitabi/home).

Abstract: Identifying discursive features of hate speech is a complex process which could be affected by digital practices. On the one hand, it is relatively easy to analyse what we have called “discours de haine directe” (direct hate speech) which relies on three concomitant conditions: the pathemic discursive dimension, the negation of otherness and judgement speech acts (provocation, offence, threat…). But the “discours de haine dissimulée” (covert hate speech) is to be viewed from the perspective of the role played by power relations and ideologies in determining hate speech through rhetorical figures such as argument ad hominem, indirect speech acts (blame, contempt, guilt…) and the concepts of preserved ethos and “discursive memory”. In this sense, data analyses also involve a critical argumentative and sociolinguistic approach to discourse. Hate speech resorts to numerous rhetorical features that need to be clarified. Based on current events, explored through argumentative or discursive analyses that illustrate the theoretical propositions developed, this book presents concepts linked to the diversity of hate speech. Among other notions, let us mention: performativity, the figure of the enemy, disqualification, gender-bias, the “fascist-sphere” or prevention. The papers, which are relatively short and echo each other, offer an insight into what is at work within hate or radicalization speech

Abstract: As America's first professional female architect, Louise Blanchard Bethune broke barriers in a male-dominated profession that was emerging as a vital force in a rapidly growing nation during the Gilded Age. Yet, Bethune herself is an enigma. Due to scant information about her life and her firm, Bethune, Bethune & Fuchs, scholars have struggled to provide a complete picture of this trailblazer. Using a newly discovered archival source of photographs, architectural drawings, and personal documents, Kelly Hayes McAlonie paints a picture of Bethune never before seen. Born in 1856 in Waterloo and raised in Buffalo, New York, Bethune wanted to be an architect from childhood. In fulfilling her dream, she challenged the nation to reconsider what a woman could do. A bicycle-riding advocate for coeducation, Bethune believed in women's emancipation through equal pay for equal work. This belief would be tested during the design competition for the Woman's Building for the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition, where female entrants were not paid for their work. Bethune refused to participate on principle, but nonetheless her career thrived, culminating in the most important commission of her life, Buffalo's Hotel Lafayette. A comprehensive biography of the first professional woman architect in the United States, who was also the first woman to be admitted to the American Institute of Architects, this book serves as an important addition to New York and architectural history.

Abstract: Alex Matson (1888–1972) is an important Finnish literary critic and essayist, whose literary reviews and collections of essays have made a vital contribution to the development of Finland's postwar literary generation. Born in Finland as the son of a sailor, Matson moved as a young child with his family to Hull in England, where he went to school. In the 1910s, he moved back to Finland, where he at first established himself as painter associated with the expressionist November Group, an important Finnish artistic movement at the time. In the interbellum, he moved from fine arts to literature. In the 1920s and 1930s, he published several novels, but more important was his work as transmitter of international literary ideas to Finland. Together with his first wife, Kersti Bergroth, he edited the literary journal Sininen kirja (""The Blue Book""; 1927–1930), which was inspired by the writings of John Middleton Murry and Katherine Mansfield. Sininen kirja is the most international literary journal in Finnish history to date and introduced Finland to the most significant modernist writers of the first half of the 20th century (Gottfried Benn, Jean Cocteau, Alfred Döblin, T. S. Eliot, Aldous Huxley, James Joyce, D. H. Lawrence, Katherine Mansfield, Paul Valéry, Virginia Woolf). During the Second World War, Matson worked for the State Communications Agency, which was responsible for disseminating relevant information about Finland to other nations and for informing Finns of relevant developments abroad. It was also tasked with studying the prevailing mood among the population in Finland. In Matson's unpublished wartime diaries, one can see the first symptoms of a shift in Finnish culture away from Germany and towards Anglo-Saxon culture. From the 1940s onwards, Matson recommended new English and American novels as a part of his work as reader for Finnish publishing houses, and he also translated works by Joyce, Hemingway and Steinbeck. With the help of a network of international literary critics, Matson became acquainted with New Criticism, which he introduced to Finland before it became established among academic researchers. He was often critical of academic literary studies, but his seminal essay works Romaanitaide (""On the Prose Novel""; 1947), John Steinbeck (1948), Kaksi mestaria (""Two Masters"", on Tolstoy and Dostoevsky; 1950) as well as his impressive conversational skills were instrumental in introducing knowledge about the principles of the prose novel to several authors (including Väinö Linna, Lauri Viita, and Hannu Salama), and contributed to their views of literature. Matson emphasized the importance of reading and understanding high-quality literature for the wellbeing of society

Abstract: Leonardo’s passage through Romagna in 1502 left significant traces in his graphic production, including the codex L and the celebrated map of Imola now at Windsor Castle. These records reveal his direct involvement in the political and military affairs of the region, as shown by the well-known concession letter issued to him by Cesare Borgia in 1502. The chapter presents a critical reexamination of the principal interventions to the fortifications of Cesena between 1502 and 1503, which were the focus of Leonardo’s observations during his stay when Cesare Borgia tried to transform it into the capital of his ephemeral duchy

Abstract: The paper analyses Leonardo’s main studies concerning the navigability of Milan waterways in order to contextualize and highlight his original contributions. Not only do Leonardo’s studies outline the actual situation of such waterways, they also include new projects and innovations. Even though these are not always ascribable to Leonardo, he certainly drew and examined them himself. The analysis is based on the study of the main transformations of Milan water system and territory over the centuries

Abstract: In recent years, several studies have focused on the interpretation and possible function of the so-called Hittite landscape monuments. For many of these monuments, a connection with the sphere of religion and cultic celebration has been suggested, especially taking into account the possible sanctity of their location, often connected to mountains, rocky outcrops, and water. The landscape monuments would in this sense represent a form of immaterial appropriation of the landscape by the Hittite king, the elites, or, in some cases, local rulers, and would play a specific role in the transmission of messages aimed at consolidating identity and/or spreading consensus. This contribution aims to provide further elements of discussion on the subject, and particularly on the use of landscape monuments as the scene of public events, through a (re)examination of some characteristics of the so-called sacred pool of Eflatunpınar, its possible connection with cult celebrations, and the identity of the ruler that sponsored its construction

Abstract: Leonardo’s interest in Vitruvian machinatio, subservient to the needs of military architecture, starts with the return of the Sienese tradition involving mechanisms used both in civil and military fields. Whilst Martini’s influence on his military studies is partly known, very little is as yet known about the extent to which they were influenced by direct observation of fortified cities. This study analyses some drawings in which the Master achieves a perfect synthesis of art and science, harmonizing together the natural features of a territory and the technical aspects necessary to forge military strategies

Abstract: Leonardo’s multifaceted experience has often been celebrated as a key historical legacy placed in a distant past. However, an interdisciplinary investigation of Leonardo’s thought, studies and design intentionality, trying to combine art and science, has highlighted the cornerstones of an ante litteram territorialist vision. To the finished product, Leonardo always prefers the knowledge of the most intimate relationships among components of the territory, always understood as a living being, thus giving posterity an immense gallery of possibilities. Therefore, Leonardo’s complex and integrated vision is a viaticum for the project of today’s manifold territory

Abstract: The essay studies the maps produced in the 15th and early 16th centuries by Venice and other states with reference to water management, exploitation of agricultural resources, administrative organization, border control and war strategies. It also considers the extraordinary maps of Southern Italy produced by the Aragonese government between the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries (known only thanks to their 18th-century copies), which bring out a grandiose and organic general plan of topographic survey by compass and astronomical observations

Abstract: Leonardo da Vinci surveys and sketches the city of Milan on f. 184v (c. 1493) and f. 199 (c. 1510) of the Codex Atlanticus and on f. 114r of the Codex Windsor (c. 1510). These drawings also include some projects for Milan’s urban transformation. The paper describes how strongly Leonardo’s idea of the city differs from the Milan of Ludovico Sforza (1494-1499) and that of the French rulers’ fortification projects of 1520-1521, in particular for what concerns the revision of the external border of the city

Abstract: At the time of Leonardo da Vinci, numerous landfalls and transversal passages along the Arno made it easily crossable and navigable in Tuscany, from Valdichiana to the coast. In order to develop a specific knowledge of such elements, and to restore a valuable analytical tile for the recognition of the territorial heritage related to Leonardo’s hydraulic design, this chapter presents the work carried out by the authors to map ports, ships, passes and mills along the Arno river course, from Florence to Pisa, also in view of a theoretical reflection on the importance of the water system at Leonardo’s time

Abstract: Leonardo’s conception of drawing and painting as a “science”, intended as a means to know material reality, in its application to the cartographic field highlights the Master’s adoption of different criteria for selecting and arranging information content in maps. Considering some significant cases, the text highlights Leonardo’s main contributions to cartography and proposes to consider these discrepancies as the results of an investigative process, in which the permanence and mutability of objects and territorial phenomena are evaluated in close relation with the project

Abstract: The Naviglio di Ivrea (Turin) sketched in sheet 563r of the Atlantic Code, drew Leonardo’s attention when he was working as hydraulic engineer in the nearby Milan. A research on the rich documentation available in local archives led to identify techniques and materials used to build the Naviglio, often similar to those in Leonardo’s hydraulic studies and drawings, and to show both its interaction with the surrounding territories and the continuous updates in hydraulic engineering from the XV to the XIX centuries. The persisting relevance of the canal through centuries is a testament to Leonardo’s ancient intuition

Abstract: This paper aims to demonstrate that cults and cultic institutions are a crucial element for understanding the processes producing different regional outcomes after the fall of the Hittite empire. In this paper, cults are understood as normative cosmic forces defining tempo and worldview of ancient societies. Cultic institutions can be identified as physical spaces defined by purity, charged with real and symbolic value, and led by specialists whose competence is recognised by the community. Instead of being a by-product of political complexity, they are a driving force behind the power dynamics because they are perceived as such in a bottom-up perspective, but also often by main political actors in search of legitimation of their power. This paper examines the interconnections between cultic and political institutions in the territory under the Hittite empire and in the same space after the empire’s demise. We aim to distinguish between processes of resilience, reorganisation, and transformation as they occurred in particular micro-regions previously controlled by the empire, including the Upper Euphrates, South-Central Anatolia, North-Central Anatolia, Cilicia, and the Northern Levant; this will demonstrate both the importance of such a micro-regionally defined study, as well as the shared coincidence of cultic and political institutional change. It will become evident that cultic continuity coincided with the resilience of political institutions, and changes in the cultic landscape corresponded to political reorganisations or transformations in post-Hittite Anatolia and north Syria

Abstract: At the heart of a geographically ill-defined Phrygian space during Antiquity, the installation of military settlers, former soldiers and troupiers still in operation, met perfectly identified strategic objectives fromthe Achaemenids, the Hellenistic monarchs or the Romans. It was to control a space essential for terrestrial communications between the interior of the Anatolian plateau on the one hand and the Aegean on the other, but also between this same coast and Cilicia, and then beyond Syria. On a tactical level, this military presence was to protect Phrygian plateau and valleys from the lust of poorly controlled neighboring populations like Pisidians. Basedon numerous archaeological, numismatic and epigraphic sources, examining each community on a case-by-case basis, this work studies the consequences of the installation of these soldiers on the local reality, whether at the economic level, cultural, religious or social. Covering a long period from the 4th century BC to the end of the Severan Dynasty, he endeavours to weigh the evolutions related to the presence of these alien soldiers. Between the Achemenid Phrygia and the Hellenistic and then Roman one, the aspect of the region, essentially rural at the outset, has gradually evolved: from the Hellenistic era, we observe an important phenomenon of poliadization, making the communication network more dense and the control of local populations more complex

Abstract: The feudal lordship of Southern Italy and in Southern Italy is a long-lasting historiographic theme, which has taken on new life in recent years. The rethinking of the interpretative categories of the medieval lordship, a series of in-depth analyses of the late-medieval rural societies and the characteristics of the feudal powers, the detailed reconstructions of their forms of administration and management, the investigations into the semantics of representations have allowed the overcoming of that historiographic paradigm of a Southern baronial class which was internally homogeneous and monolithic in its orientations. Aiming to follow this path, this book puts a case study forth: the lordship of the Orsini, counts of Nola, between Terra di Lavoro and Principato Ultra (1293-1528). Using a wide variety of sources (documentary, literary, iconographic and architectural), the author reconstructs how the Orsini were able to entrench themselves within this territory, exposing their network of relationships with Nola’s most prominent families, and analysing the processes of their self-representation through artistic patronage

Abstract: What can artists learn from theatre scholars when it comes to performing historical works on stage today? What can theatre scholars learn from today’s artists when it comes to understanding the works and practices of the past? How is the experience of modern spectators affected by attending performances in historic theatres? And how, aesthetically, do we experience the reconstruction of productions from the remote past? This collection of essays covers the findings of the research project ‘Performing Premodernity’: an international group of theatre scholars whose work centred on the Drottningholm theatre from 1766: just outside Stockholm, this famous theatre has authentic stage sets and machinery preserved almost in their original eighteenth-century state. Behind all the essays is a mixture of fascination and dissatisfaction with today’s performances of drama and opera classics, particularly those that take place in historic theatres, and those operating within the so-called Historically Informed Performance movement. Moreover, they reflect a desire to develop and expand the methods traditionally used by theatre historians. And they present a variety of angles on today’s performances in historic theatres and on today’s attempts to revive theatrical practices of the past. The authors combine academic and artistic research as a way of deepening and nuancing our understanding of eighteenth-century theatre practices. The historical research is set in dialogue with the dramaturgical insights and aesthetic experiences the historians gained from their practical doing in historic spaces. Experimentation with lighting, costumes, stage movement, vocal and instrumental practices, and the flow of energy between performers and spectators led to the investigation of topics that theatre historians otherwise tend to ignore. In turn, this has led the researchers to challenge long-held views of the sites, repertoires, and performance practices of eighteenth-century theatre. Performing Premodernity’s experimental, practice-based approach accords with the view of the late Enlightenment as what Vincenzo Ferrone has called ‘a real and still unexplored laboratory of modernity’. The second half of the eighteenth century was a time of both wide-ranging artistic innovation and earth-shaking political revolutions; it was a period when ideal and practice, philosophy and art influenced and guided each other to an unprecedented degree. The essays start from the conviction that any attempt at a holistic understanding of the theatrical practices of the time must take these exchanges into account. And that a strictly antiquarian approach that merely tries to establish ‘how it really was’, without considering the utopian dimension of the reforms of people like Rousseau, Gluck, and Mozart, will fail to grasp the impetus and the dynamic, communicative aspect of eighteenth-century theatre. Therefore, several of the essays revolve around the group’s historically informed production of a true ‘avantgarde’ work of the eighteenth century: Pygmalion, Jean-Jacques Rousseau’s scène lyrique from 1762. Performing Premodernity’s research-based production premiered at Český Krumlov Castle Theatre in 2015. The present anthology is essential reading for theatre scholars and musicologists studying eighteenth-century performance as well as for theatre and opera artists concerned with period performance practice

Abstract: Slavery takes many forms. This was also true in Roman antiquity, even though modern scholarship on Roman slavery paints the picture of a very homogenous institution. This volume intends to correct that perception. In it, renowned legal historians analyse juristic writings to showcase the social differences among slaves reflected in these texts. In this way, the papers collected here convey an impression of the complexity of Roman slave law

Abstract: The book approaches the history of Finnish development cooperation through the experiences of development aid workers. At its core is a small group of Finns (experts and officials from different fields) who have worked with international development aid in Asia, Africa and Latin America. Their memories and experiences, together with diverse archival material offer an interesting window into the world of development (cooperation), or “Aidland”, from the 1960s to the turn of the millennium. The research focuses on the personal motives and experiences of Finnish aid workers from the 1960s to the 2000s. The book offers perspectives on the historical construction of Aidland since the 1940s and on the gradual integration of Finland and the Finns into its structures. It describes the mindset of the first two generations of aid workers and the factors that made them interested in developing countries. The book follows their education, their first contacts with Aidland, adaptation to work and conditions, returning home and the challenges that come with it. The study gives the reader a view of the power positions, hierarchies and contradictions in Aidland and development cooperation, which at times led Finns to reassess their motives and justify to themselves the meaningfulness of the entire undertaking. Through their experiences, the book also deals with the less-known side of development cooperation, such as corruption, prejudices, and opposition to development projects, as well as their occasionally unwanted consequences in partner/recipient countries. It also sheds light on the effects of the Aidland experience on an individual’s worldview and identity. The book is an academic study suitable for a wide audience, from university students to ordinary readers interested in development cooperation. The book helps to understand both the history of development and the construction of multi-level connections of Finnish society with the countries of the Global South. It is therefore also ideally suited for readers interested in the development of Finland’s internationalization in the late twentieth century. For its part, the book contributes to wider public debates on development cooperation

Abstract: The court and court society in the Hispanic world (16th-18th centuries): The courtly world has emerged as a propitious intellectual and historiographical space for thinking and writing the history of early modernity. Ever since the renewal of the so-called ‘political history,’ but also after the perspective of cultural studies, the courtly has become the privileged scenario for the study of the political society of the Modern Age, starting from the analysis of the formation of the different social actors’ different political identities in dispute, as well as the tracking of hidden interests in decision-making in order to understand power groups or networks. Similarly, the courtly cannot but be thought of as that singular scenario and/or space of conjunction and indistinction between the political (public) and the economic (private), as well as a locus of identity formation and dispute. In this sense, the study of the Ancien Régime societies cannot ignore the courtly, which is a key element for understanding and analyzing one of the articulating elements of the globality of the European monarchies, particularly the Hispanic monarchy. As this work describes, this global perspective allows us to understand the importance and imprint of the courtly in America. Therefore, the aim is to analyze and understand the court and the courtly world from multiple perspectives. The articles that make up this work problematize the courtly from different geographical spaces, but above all from different intellectual concerns and preoccupations: princely and courtly education, the problem of the King’s favorite, the religious, the nobiliary, the place of the feminine in the court or, also, the materiality of the courtly texts and the materiality of the government of the monarchy from the court

Abstract: Many Syrians who immigrated to the US beginning in the 1870s worked as peddlers. Traveling enabled men to transgress Syrian norms related to marriage, while Syrian women’s roles in peddling led to more economic autonomy. In Possible Histories, Charlotte Karem Albrecht explores this peddling economy to reveal the sexual ideologies imbricated in Arab American racial histories. Possible Histories marshals a queer affective approach to community and family history to show how Syrian immigrant peddlers and their networks of labor and care appeared in interconnected discourses of modernity, sexuality, gender, class, and race. Karem Albrecht theorizes this profession, and its place in Arab American historiography, as a “queer ecology” of laboring practices, intimacies, and knowledge production. This book ultimately proposes a new understanding of the long arm of Arab American history that puts sexuality and gender at the heart of ways of navigating US racial systems. “Possible Histories brings an innovative queer analytic to Arab American history, inquiring into the intimate relationships among itinerant peddlers. Uncovering the role of sexuality in racializing Arab Americans, it challenges respectability politics and brilliantly upends reigning paradigms in Arab American history.” — EVELYN ALSULTANY, author of Broken: The Failed Promise of Muslim Inclusion “A deeply personal queer history that is brisk, unsettling, and brimming with insights. Puzzling through gossip, shame, and scandal, Charlotte Karem Albrecht offers an astounding kaleidoscope of Arab Americans in the twentieth century.” — NAYAN SHAH, author of Refusal to Eat: A Century of Prison Hunger Strikes “Possible Histories is a rich contribution to queer theorizing on kinship, archives, and diaspora. In this moving tribute to the challenges and traps of recovery work, Karem Albrecht traverses the maze of memory and family with care and thoughtfulness.” — JASBIR PUAR, Professor of Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies, Rutgers University

Abstract: Marek Thee was a Jewish Polish journalist, scholar, and activist. This book tells his life from narrowly escaping death in the Holocaust to exile in Palestine, where he became attached to the Polish consular service. On his return to Poland in 1950, he worked for the Foreign Ministry and later for the Polish Institute for International Affairs. He served as Head of the Polish delegation to the International Control Commission in Indochina in the late 1950s. In 1968 he lost his job and his Polish citizenship in a nationalistic and antisemitic campaign. He was able to move to Norway where he worked for twenty years at the Peace Research Institute Oslo (PRIO), editing an international quarterly journal, Bulletin of Peace Proposals and doing research on the arms race. In retirement, he continued his research and writing at the Norwegian Human Rights Institute. The book vividly relates the drama of his life in Poland, Palestine, Indochina, and Norway. Abstract: This open access book includes forty-one chapters about foreign observers’ discourses on Japan. These include a wide range of perspectives from the travelogues of curious visitors to academic theses by scholars, which offer us a broad spectrum of contents, reflecting a variety of attitudes toward Japan. The works were written during the period from the 1850s to the 1980s, a timespan during which Japan became, in stages, more open to the outside world after a long isolation under the Tokugawa shogunate. From the perspective of “Japanology,” one can discern three distinct periods of rising interest in the country from abroad. The first tide of such interest came shortly after the opening of Japan, when various foreign travelers, including those who could not be included in this book, came over and wrote down their impressions of the country—which was, for them, a land of mystery and mystique, which had just opened its doors to them. The second wave arose at the beginning of the twentieth century, just after the Russo-Japanese War, when Japan again generated a remarkable surge of interest as a “miracle” in Asia that had pulled off the wondrous feat of defeating a white superpower. The third wave was more recent, which took place from the late 1960s to the 1980s, a period of high economic growth when the “miracle” of Japan’s remarkable economic recovery from the defeat of World War II attracted enthusiastic and curious attention from the outside world once again. It is not the intention of this book to directly highlight such historical transitions, but these forty-two brilliant mirrors (forty-one chapters, including forty-two discourses), even when looked in casually, provide us with unexpected insights and various perspectives. Shōichi Saeki (1922–2016) was Professor Emeritus, the University of Tokyo. Tōru Haga (1931–2020) was Professor Emeritus, International Research Center for Japanese Studies

Abstract: We all have flaws because, as humans, we are all inherently fallible. If we can focus on becoming better people in life, it will likely help mitigate that fallibility. What It Means to Be a Man focuses on the concept that if all young Marines internalize the words and thoughts here, and use them to not only be better Marines but more importantly, better people, then we can be a much better Service overall. The U.S. Marine Corps and the American people have invested so much time, effort, and money into them that they are more than worth the effort to make them better people now but also when they take off the uniform and return to civilian society

Abstract: The nature of the administration of sacred time in Hittite Anatolia represents a complex problem, which has received little attention until recent years. This paper provides an overview of the topic, reconsidering the Hittite religious calendar as a whole and analysing some of the main issues connected with the Hittite calendrical system, such as the problem of the beginning of the year, the lunar nature of the Hittite month and the alleged existence of a system of intercalation

Abstract: Ongoing study of the pottery assemblage and its surrounding context in Area 4 at the site of Alalakh has again brought to light a phenomenon that is considered typical for the Iron Age I Levant: the construction of pits/silo installations in open areas. This phenomenon has been interpreted as a sign of ruralisation or insecure economic conditions, a possible marker for the political instability in the area during the 13th-12th centuries BCE. This article examines the similarities and differences between the examples from the Iron Age I in the ‘Amuq and contemporary sites in the Levant, and also considers later similar installations from the Iron Age II. Keeping in mind the functions usually ascribed to these structures, this study also analyses the so-called ‘Anatolian’ tradition of grain storage in the Late Bronze Age and Early Iron Age in order to address the role of these installations in understanding possible food control strategies and their possible impact in the Levant

Abstract: Leonardo’s life and work coincide with the time the modern world was born, involving a strong change in the relationship with the territory and an acceleration of human subjugation of nature. Leonardo’s artistic and technical work moves between two polarities: the idea of a generating nature and the human aspiration to domination, with a vision of knowledge not yet fragmented by the specialism of modernity. Leonardo’s multifaceted activity is a child of his age: of a Renaissance that was more innovation than method and of a period in which political transformations and a demographic recovery drew new attention to the territory

Abstract: Dieu au Collège de France, volume 6 of the « Passage des disciplines » series, includes texts that were presented during the symposium “Dieu at the Collège de France”, which was held in June 2021, after the delays caused by the pandemic, as part of “Passage des disciplines. Global history of the Collège de France, 19th-20th century”. This research program and the series associated with it examines the genesis of scientific and literary fields of knowledge, their mapping and their evolution during the 19th and 20th centuries, on both national and international levels, from the standpoint afforded by the history of the renewal of academic chairs at the Collège de France. “Dieu” is, to be sure, not a new 19th discipline, or a “founder of discursivity”, as Foucault called the scholars who had invented not only new discourses, but, more broadly, discursive continents, new “épistemes”. God is certainly an ancient “inventor of discursivity” and the discursive continent that he has launched is considerably more diffuse than those which come from Freud, Darwin, Einstein or Durkheim, which were the object of preceding symposia, and, for the first three ones, of the first three volumes of the series. Yet, it seemed to us possible to examine, in collaboration with Thomas Römer, holder of the chair The Hebrew Bible and its Contexts, the science of God and how the Collège de France, at different times of its history, and through this institution, the university, higher education in general, the life of ideas, made way for the sciences of religion

Abstract: Finland was an autonomous Grand Duchy in the Russian Empire during the years 1808–1917. At this time nationalism as well as other ideologies reached Finland from Europe, which strengthened the willingness to change both in society and on a governmental level. The Fennoman movement, which was a movement focusing both on language and on nationalism, became the core of the Finnish self-perception. The goal was to define Finland as a coherent and separate country in relation to its neighbouring countries. Collecting folk poems and learning to know one’s home country became essential. People saw the Kalevala poems as a way to understand and define the Finnish identity and the history of the Finnish people. Especially young people with a background in academia were intrigued by these ideas. University students collected poems all over the Grand Duchy of Finland as well as in the Russian part of Carelia, in Sweden, Norway and in Ingria. Students who collected these folk poems also wrote travelogues about their travels and all this material was handed over to The Finnish Literature Society. These documents are unique and there has not been much research done on them, especially with the focus on how the young academic generation during the age of autonomy defined their home country, their national self-perception, themselves and the commoners living in the rural parts of the country. This book reviews travelogues written by one hundred university students who travelled in the country collecting folk poems during 1836–1917. The book offers insight into how the students described Finland and what it meant to be Finnish. Travelogues can be defined as a sort of hybrid of texts. They consist of a mixture of letters, journals, biographical texts and travel books. Consequently, the image that the students depict of Finland is in this study based upon research perspectives and methods used in textual research, oral history and travel literature. The travelogues written by students previously evoked the interest of researchers who mainly studied certain traits of poem collectors, tradition bearers or poems. However, the travelogues contain plenty of information about the lives of the people who lived in the areas where the poems were collected. The descriptions of Finland in the travelogues do not represent the “real” 19th century Finland, but instead it is a story written and created by university students. The characteristics that are presented in The Land of Hope are based on how the intelligentsia perceived “real” Finnishness as opposed to the uneducated commoners living in the rural parts of the country. The most notable themes in the travelogues are the state and the future of the society and of being Finnish. Another theme is the otherization of those who were uneducated commoners. These themes describe the fears and hopes that university students had about Finland. They also show us that the travelogues were ideological texts about Finland and Finnishness that united the collectors of folk poetry. This book studies the collection of folk poetry in the context of the ideologies during the age of autonomy and it explains what the collection of poems meant and who were involved in it. Furthermore, the book gives an insight into the possibilities to pursue academic studies and it also presents the most essential sources of students’ knowledge about Finland at that point of time

Abstract: This book offers exciting and often surprising insights into one hundred diseases that have emerged over the past century. The authors focus on the period from 1923, when Radboud University was founded, to 2023, the university's centennial anniversary. All of the diseases included in this book have left an indelible mark on the century in which they emerged, in either a scientific and/or socio-historic sense. This book can therefore be read as a series of descriptions of time-specific degenerative disorders, inflammations, infections, malignant neoplasms, immunological diseases, developmental disorders, genetic diseases and psychiatric disorders. All of the descriptions are accompanied by vivid illustrations, the majority of which come from the Museum of Anatomy and Pathology at Radboud university medical center. Each disease description also includes a critical commentary and a brief historical framework. Scientific findings by Dutch and Nijmegen researchers are highlighted, where applicable. Finally, each disease description also includes an English summary. The book A Century of Diseases is accessible to a wide audience of readers with an interest in pathology, ranging from students and staff at Radboud University and Radboud university medical center to those involved in all facets of healthcare, from professionals to patients

Abstract: In the Middle Ages, the Iberian Peninsula and the Maghreb constituted a frontier zone where Christianity and Islam lived side by side and met, ignored each other and interacted, clashed and agreed. In addition to their own distinctive characteristics, the Christian and Muslim worlds were themselves largely composite entities. Political fragmentation, social heterogeneity and denominational plurality multiply the opportunities and reasons for tension and discord. These dissensions sometimes lead to confrontation, but can also be resolved or smoothed out by the search for common ground and compromise. It is these negotiations and accommodations, in all their variety, that are the focus of this dossier. Over a long period of time and across a vast geographical area considered on a variety of scales, the contributions brought together here aim to provide a better understanding of the modalities and functions of these negotiations and conciliations in the search for middle ground, in the diplomatic, political or economic spheres, while highlighting the difficulties and resistance that hinder their development or limit their effectiveness

Abstract: Between c. 1350 and 1550, English sculptors carved thousands of panels depicting religious scenes from alabaster quarries around Nottingham. Exported throughout Europe, these polychrome reliefs were originally usually assembled to form altarpieces. Their coloured epidermis, an integral part of these works that can be termed three-dimensional paintings, has now often disappeared. A multidisciplinary team (art historian, archaeologist, artist and specialist in ancient polychromy, 3D engineers and optodigital researcher) has analysed and reconstructed the polychromy of several of these English panels preserved in the Bordeaux region. The physico-chemical analyses made it possible to determine the nature of the materials used and to recreate the paints used by the alabastermen. These data were used to produce an alabaster facsimile as well as two 3D models with their digital polychromy. As the polychromy of English alabaster works is highly standardised, these examples can be considered as representative of the appearance that the vast majority of the panels must have showed. The study thus allows us to address broader themes, such as the aesthetic and symbolic qualities of the colours used by the alabastermen, or the way in which these were perceived by the medieval viewer

Abstract: Aimed at researchers, students and all interested in history, this multidisciplinary study offers a spectacular view of the history of Europe’s largest lake. Adopting the lens of coastal history, this edited volume presents the development of the vast Great Lake’s catchment area over a long-time span, from archaeological traces to Viking routes and from fishery huts to luxury villas of the power elite. It reflects on people’s sensory-historical relationships with aquatic nature, and considers the benefits and harms of power plants and factories to human communities and the environment. The focus of the study is on the central and northern parts of the shores of Lake Ladoga, which belonged to Finnish rule between 1812 and 1944. The multidisciplinary approach permits an unusually wide range of questions. What has the Great Lake meant to local residents in cultural and emotional terms? How should we conceptualize the extensive and diverse networks of activities that surrounded the lake? What kind of Ladoga beaches did the Finns have to cede to the Soviet Union at the end of the war in 1944? How have Finns reminisced about their lost homelands? How have the Russians transformed the profile of the region, and what is the state of Ladoga’s waters today? The volume is the first overall presentation of Lake Ladoga, which today is entirely part of Russia, aimed at an international readership. The rich source material of cross-border research consists of both diverse archival material and chronicles, folklore, reminiscence, and modern satellite images. The history of Lake Ladoga helps readers to understand better the economic, political, and socio-cultural characteristics of the cross-border areas, and the dynamics of the vulnerable border regions

Abstract: The riches of the Hittite tablet collections are justly famous for the great mass of information they provide about deities, cult, and religious beliefs all over the Kingdom of Hattusa. The sheer amount of available texts and the fragmented state of many of them pose nontrivial problems for any systematic study of the Hittite religion. Expanding on the digital edition of the so-called cult inventories (CTH 526-530, ca. 450 fragments) and exploiting the potential of the related database, this paper provides for the first time a quantitative analysis of the panthea of local towns in the core area of the kingdom in the Late Empire period. The study is organized in two parts. Part One sets out the methodological basis for the analysis by examining the target corpus in terms of internal consistency, discussing the appropriateness of a distinction between “state” vs. “nonstate” cults both within the perspective of the current discourse on Hittite religion and specifically with regard to its consequences for the proposed analysis, and laying out the analytical principles used in the extraction of the relevant information. Part Two presents selected sets of data, explores ways to interpret and combine them, and investigates their significance for the study of local panthea in the Late Empire. The results are twofold. On the one hand, an innovative picture of the panthea under discussion is obtained, with substantial implications for our understanding of a number of deities, their relationship to each other, and their role within the religious life of provincial communities. On the other hand, the critical scrutiny of the nature and specific traits of the data sample highlights methodological pitfalls in a purely quantitative analysis of Hittite religious texts, and proposes correctives for mitigating their impact, thereby providing a significant case study for future research
