    Kurzfassung: "The edited volume Both Muslim and European: Diasporic and Migrant Identities of Bosniaks scrutinizes some of the new aspects of the Bosniak history and identity and connects them with the experience of migration and diaspora formation. Adopting an interdisciplinary approach, to volume tackles a variety of important questions and issues such as: the impact of migration waves on the Bosniak identity; dealing with the experience of war, genocide and forced displacement; the dual cultural code of being "in-between the two worlds"; the role of religion, language and culture in everyday life; looking at translocal and transnational networks and practices. In addition to discussing the contemporary issues in Bosnia and Herzegovina, several chapters deal with the Bosnian migrant realities in countries such as Germany, Switzerland, Slovenia, Australia, Turkey and the United States of America."

    Kurzfassung: "With the rise of Christianity in the Roman Empire increasing numbers of educated people converted to this new belief. As Christianity did not have its own educational institutions the issue of how to harmonize pagan education and Christian convictions became increasingly pressing. Especially classical poetry, the staple diet of pagan education, was considered to be morally corrupting (due to its deceitful mythological content) and damaging for the salvation of the soul (because of the false gods it advocated). But Christianity recoiled from an unqualified anti-intellectual attitude, while at the same time the experiment of creating an idiosyncratic form of genuinely Christian poetry failed (the sole exception being the poet Commodianus). In The Baptized Muse: Early Christian Poetry as Cultural Authority, Karla Pollmann argues that, instead, Christian poets made creative use of the classical literary tradition, and - in addition to blending it with Judaeo-Christian biblical exegesis exploited poetry's special ability of enhancing communicative effectiveness and impact through aesthetic means. Pollman explores these strategies through a close analysis of a wide range of Christian, and for comparison partly also pagan, writers mainly from the fourth to sixth centuries. She reveals that early Christianity was not a hermetically sealed uniform body, but displays a rich spectrum of possibilities in dealing with the past and a willingness to engage with and adapt the surrounding culture(s), thereby developing diverse and changing responses to historical challenges. By demonstrating throughout that authority is a key in understanding the long denigrated and misunderstood early Christian poets, this book reaches the ground-breaking conclusion that early Christian poetry is an art form that gains its justification by adding cultural authority to Christianity. Thus, in a wider sense it engages with the recently developed interdisciplinary scholarly interest in aspects of religion as cultural phenomena" --

    Kurzfassung: "The reality for marginalized Muslim girls in the city of Kolkata (formerly Calcutta) in India is far more complex than the one that is often constructed during discussions that view the lives of Muslim girls through a lens of repression and poverty within the patriarchal Islamic community. Based on extensive, original research, this book portrays a different and an under-represented perspective of young Muslim girls in the bustees (shanty towns) of Kolkata. Through a series of personal narratives, photos and artwork, it demonstrates that in spite of the dominant discourse surrounding their lives, the consumption and behaviour patterns of young women in these bustees challenge the monolithic representations of what it means to be a Muslim girl in Indian society. It explores the ways in which the young Muslim women live, manipulate, and resist the stereotypes of Islamic femininity by carefully negotiating the risks and performing multiple identities inspired by modernity, globalization and, most of all, Bollywood culture.     Kurzfassung: A collection of Pollmann's previously-published essays on early Christian poetry, most newly-translated from German and all updated and corrected. It is a genre that has tended to be overlooked by both Classicists and Patristics scholars and this collection will rectify that. With the rise of Christianity in the Roman Empire, increasing numbers of educated people converted to this new belief. As Christianity did not have its own educational institutions, the issue of how to harmonize pagan education and Christian convictions became increasingly pressing. Especially classical poetry, the staple diet of pagan education, was considered morally corrupting (because of its deceitful mythological content) and damaging for the salvation of the soul (because of the false gods it advocated). But Christianity recoiled from an unqualified anti-intellectual attitude, while at the same time the experiment of creating an idiosyncratic form of genuinely Christian poetry failed (the sole exception being the poet Commodianus). This book argues that, instead, Christian poets made creative use of the classical literary tradition, and—in addition to blending it with Judaeo-Christian biblical exegesis—exploited poetry’s special ability of enhancing the effectiveness of communication through aesthetic means. It seeks to explore these strategies through a close analysis of a wide range of Christian, and for comparison partly also pagan, writers mainly from the fourth to sixth centuries. The book reveals that early Christianity was not a hermetically sealed uniform body, but displays a rich spectrum of possibilities in dealing with the past and a willingness to engage with and adapt the surrounding culture(s), thereby developing diverse and changing responses to historical challenges. By demonstrating throughout that authority is a key in understanding the long denigrated and misunderstood early Christian poets, this book reaches the ground-breaking conclusion that early Christian poetry is an art form that gains its justification by adding cultural authority to Christianity. Thus, in a wider sense this book engages with the recently emerged scholarly interest in aspects of religion as cultural phenomena.

    Kurzfassung: In Jewish Ethnic Identity and Relations in Hellenistic Egypt , Stewart Moore investigates the foundations of common assumptions about ethnicity. To maintain one’s identity in a strange land, was it always necessary to band tightly together with one’s coethnics? Sociologists and anthropologists who study ethnicity have given us a much wider view of the possible strategies of ethnic maintenance and interaction. The most important facet of Jewish ethnicity in Egypt which emerges from this study is the interaction over the Jewish-Egyptian boundary. Previous scholarship has assumed that this border was a Siegfried Line marked by mutual contempt. Yet Jews, Egyptians and also Greeks interacted in complicated ways in Ptolemaic Egypt, with positive relationships being at least as numerous as negative ones

Hatzaad Harishon ("The First Step") was a New York-based, multiracial Jewish organization that worked to increase recognition and legitimacy of black Jews in the sixties and seventies. In Stepping into Zion, Janice W. Fernheimer examines the history and archives of Hatzaad Harishon to illuminate the definition and borders of Jewish identity, which have critical relevance to Jews of all traditions as well as to non-Jews. Fernheimer focuses on a period when white Jewish identity was in flux and deeply influenced by the Civil Rights and Black Power movements. In 1964, white and black Jews formed Hatzaad Harishon to foster interaction and unity between black and white Jewish communities. They raised the question of who or what constitutes Jewishness or Jewish identity, and in searching for an answer succeeded-both historically and rhetorically-in gaining increased recognition for black Jews. Fernheimer traces how members of Hatzaad Harishon, who did not share the same set of definitions, were able to create common ground in a process she terms "interruptive invention." Through insightful interpretation of Hatzaad Harishon's archival materials, Fernheimer chronicles the group's successes and failures within the larger rhetorical history of conflicts that emerge when cultural identities shift or expand. Stepping into Zion offers "interruptive invention" as a framework for understanding and changing certain dominant discourses about racial and religious identity, allowing those who may lack institutional power or authority to begin to claim it"-- , "By studying the multiracial Jewish organization Hatzaad Harishon, Janice W.     Kurzfassung: Revitalization of religious and cultural traditions is taking place in nearly all contemporary Asian societies, as is shown in Faith in the Future: Understanding the Revitalization of Religions and Cultural Traditions in Asia . Revitalization is not unique to Asia, it is one of the most significant new global trends in religion and society. While they are a response to globalization and rapid change, revitalization movements are not backward looking but represent a struggle by local people for their right to determine their own future in a changing world, while also reflecting their desire to find an appropriate place and status for themselves within a global context which they take for granted. The volume provides a comparative analysis of the key features and aspirations of revitalization movements and assesses their scope for shaping the future trajectories of societies in all parts of the world

    Kurzfassung: Religion gilt als wichtige Ressource zur Artikulation von kulturellen Identitäten - besonders bei Menschen mit erhöhter Mobilität. Ethnologische Forschungen haben dazu beigetragen, die transnationale Perspektive in der Migrationsforschung zu etablieren, indem nicht nur die verschiedenen Aufenthaltsorte von Migranten und Migrantinnen und ihren Familienangehörigen, sondern auch die Transaktionen und Vernetzungen zwischen diesen in den Blick gerücktsind. Migranten reaktivieren nicht nur die eigene Religion und leben sie teilweise aktiver als in der Heimat, sondern das Nebeneinander unterschiedlicher Religionen im Einwanderungsland führt auch zu einer erhöhten Pluralisierung von religiöser Kultur mit den verschiedensten Wirkungen und Dynamiken.In diesem Buch wird auf Basis aktueller ethnographischer Forschung die Verwobenheit informeller Mikropolitiken und makrostruktureller Angelegenheiten von Religion und rituellen Praxen untersucht. Dabei geht es zentral um das Spannungsfeld zwischen individuellen Handlungsstrategien und den kulturellen wie sozialen Zugehörigkeiten im transnationalen Raum.

    Kurzfassung: In The Location of Culture, Homi K. Bhabha sets out the conceptual imperative and political consistency of the post-colonial intellectual project. In a dazzling series of essays, he explains why the post-colonial critique has altered forever the landscape of postmodern discourse. The Location of Culture examines, among other things, the displacement of the coloniser's legitimizing cultural authority. It takes a searching look at the complex cultural and political boundaries which exist in between the spheres of gender, race, class and sexuality. Bhabha investigates and illuminates a diverse range of texts in a bold attempt to specify the moment and the place of both colonial and post-colonial perspectives. He discusses writers such as Morrison, Gordimer and Rushdie and historical documents such as those on the Indian Mutiny.

    Kurzfassung: Enlightenment in the Colony opens up the history of the "Jewish question" for the first time to a broader discussion--one of the social exclusion of religious and cultural minorities in modern times, and in particular the crisis of Muslim identity in modern India. Aamir Mufti identifies the Hindu-Muslim conflict in India as a colonial variation of what he calls "the exemplary crisis of minority"--Jewishness in Europe. He shows how the emergence of this conflict in the late nineteenth century represented an early instance of the reinscription of the "Jewish question" in a non-Western society undergoing modernization under colonial rule. In so doing, he charts one particular route by which this European phenomenon linked to nation-states takes on a global significance. Mufti examines the literary dimensions of this crisis of identity through close readings of canonical texts of modern Western--mostly British-literature, as well as major works of modern Indian literature in Urdu and English. He argues that the one characteristic shared by all emerging national cultures since the nineteenth century is the minoritization of some social and cultural fragment of the population, and that national belonging and minority separatism go hand in hand with modernization

    Kurzfassung: Main description: Die Globalisierung, wie sie sich im Zuge der Epochenwende von 1989/90, der weltweiten Öffnung der Märkte, der neuen Kommunikationstechnologien und einer beschleunigten Mobilität herausgebildet hat, steht im Begriff, die Welt tiefreichend zu verändern. Soziale, wirtschaftliche, staatliche und kulturelle Identitäten und Vertrautheiten werden zunehmend in Frage gestellt.Von diesen Befunden gehen die in diesem Band publizierten Beiträge aus. Dabei stellen sich Fragen in zwei Richtungen: Wird die Globalisierung dazu führen, daß die Unterschiede und Besonderheiten zwischen den Nationen und Völkern immer mehr verschwinden? Welche kulturellen Kompetenzen sind erforderlich, um die Globalisierung im Sinne eines sozial verträglichen, wirtschaftlich erfolgreichen und damit möglichst gerechten Ausgleichs zu gestalten? Eine dritte durchgängige Perspektive des Bandes ist darin zu sehen, daß hier auch die religiösen, insbesondere christlichen Implikationen der Globalisierung eine ihnen zustehende Beachtung finden.Die Beiträge gehen auf das 8. Deutsch-Amerikanische Kolloquium zurück, das auf Initiative der School of Philosophy der Catholic University, Washington DC, und der Katholischen Sozialwissenschaftlichen Zentralstelle, Mönchengladbach, vom 12. bis 18. August 2004 in Detroit durchgeführt wurde.
