Abstract: Use Components to Improve Maintainability, Reduce Complexity, and Accelerate Testing in Large Rails Applications "This book gives Ruby pros a comprehensive guide for increasing the sophistication of their designs, without having to forsake the principles of elegance that keep them in our corner of the software world." -Obie Fernandez, author, The Rails™ 5 Way, Fourth Edition As Rails applications grow, even experienced developers find it difficult to navigate code bases, implement new features, and keep tests fast. Components are the solution, and Component-Based Rails Applications shows how to make the most of them. Writing for programmers and software team leads who are comfortable with Ruby and Rails, Stephan Hagemann introduces a practical, start-to-finish methodology for modernizing and restructuring existing Rails applications. One step at a time, Hagemann demonstrates how to revamp Rails applications to exhibit visible, provably independent, and explicitly connected parts-thereby simplifying them and making them far easier for teams to manage, change, and test. Throughout, he introduces design concepts and techniques you can use to improve applications of many kinds, even if they weren't built with Rails or Ruby. Learn how components clarify intent, improve collaboration, and simplify innovation and maintenance Create a full Rails application within a component, from first steps to migrations and dependency management Test component-based applications, manage assets and dependencies, and deploy your application to production Identify the seams in an existing Rails application, and refactor it to extract components Master a scripted, repeatable approach for refactoring Rails applications of any size Use component-based Rails with two popular structural patterns: hexagonal and DCI architecture Leverage your new component skills with other frameworks and languages Overcome the unique challenges that arise as you componentize Rails applications If you're ready to simplify and revitalize your complex Rails systems, you're ready for Component-Based Rails Applications . Abstract: A large number of enciphered documents survived from early modern Hungary. This area was a particularly fertile territory where cryptographic methods proliferated, because a large portion of the population was living in the frontier zone, and participated (or was forced to participate) in the network of the information flow. A quantitative analysis of sixteenth-century to seventeenth-century Hungarian ciphers (300 cipher keys and 1,600 partly or entirely enciphered letters) reveals that besides the dominance of diplomatic use of cryptography, there were many examples of?private? applications too. This book reconstructs the main reasons and goals why historical actors chose to use ciphers in a diplomatic letter, a military order, a diary or a private letter, what they decided to encrypt, and how they perceived the dangers threatening their messages

Abstract: "The subject of religion and dress in Turkey has been debated at great length both in academia and the media. Through in-depth ethnographic research into the Turkish fashion market and the work of a category of new comers, namely headscarf-wearing fashion professionals, Islam, Faith, and Fashion examines entrepreneurship in this market and the aesthetic desirability, religious suitability, and ethical credibility of fashionable Islamic dress. What makes a fashionable outfit Islamically appropriate? What makes an Islamically appropriate outfit fashionable? What are the conditions, challenges and constraints an entrepreneur faces in this market, and how do they market their products? Is the presumed oxymoronic nature of Islamic fashion a challenge or a burden? Through case studies and ethnographic portraits, Craciun questions the commercialization of Islamic dress and tackles the delicate and often incompatible relationship between clothing worn in recognition of religious belief and clothing worn purely because it is fashionable. This timely analysis of fashion, religion, ethics, and aesthetics presents dress as a disputed and a contested locus of modernity. Islam, Faith, and Fashion will be essential reading for students of fashion, anthropology, and material and visual culture"--Bloomsbury Publishing

Abstract: As stories continue to mount about security breaches in organizations and government agencies-such as the 2016 US Department of Justice hack-many people believe there's really nothing they can do about it. Fact is, you can do quite a bit. In this report, security professional Andrew Peterson addresses several widespread misconceptions about the hacking world so that you can be better prepared to join the fight. You may believe hackers today are too clever and attacks are too sophisticated for you to do anything, or that your organization isn't worth a hacker's time. But that isn't the case. All organizations-from small, owner-operated businesses to large, multinational corporations-own data worth stealing and are potential, and even likely, targets for an attack. If you're ready to take security seriously, you need to involve everyone in the company, including security and non-security professionals alike. This report provides you with an accurate picture, rather than conjecture or half-truths propagated by the media.

Abstract: The software development industry is increasingly realizing that success depends on a project's long-term viability. To help with that effort, the Software Improvement Group (SIG) has identified ten guidelines for delivering code that's easy to maintain and adapt over time. While a full examination of these guidelines is available in Building Maintainable Software (O'Reilly), this report focuses on their application in the real world. Author and agile consultant Abraham Marin-Perez briefly explores each guideline and uses a running example to demonstrate how they can work together in a production environment. You'll also get case studies of ten European organizations that have significantly benefitted from these guidelines. The Ten Guidelines for Maintainable Software aren't just a theoretical exercise. In fact, SIG created them after years of analyzing what made some software projects successful and maintainable, while many others ultimately fell short. By applying these guidelines, you'll benefit from the wisdom of developers who preceded you.

Abstract: The problem of being a stranger is present in every culture. In this context, "the Jewish question" is often discussed, since the Jews have been present in other nations for centuries, constituting the social and cultural minority and being almost always perceived as strangers. This volume presents a detailed analysis of Jewish self-perceptions and attitudes, often very complex, towards other societies and communities living in the same lands. The contributors to this book explore the lengthy discussions between both the supporters and adversaries of assimilation within the Jewish environment

Abstract: Cosmopolitanism is the idea of humanity as a single community or polis. Beyond particularities, all human beings (and in some versions of cosmopolitanism certain non-humans) are part of a community, and have responsibilities, rights and the power to decide on a common future. Ideas of cosmopolitan vary from the purely moral to cultural, social, legal, institutional, political, educational and economic cosmopolitanism, or combine some or all of these facets. All of these different perspectives try to establish the basis necessary to create a true cosmopolitanism. This book provides an introducti

Abstract: IBM® zEnterprise® Data Compression (zEDC) capability and the Peripheral Component Interconnect Express (PCIe or PCI Express) hardware adapter called zEDC Express were announced in July 2013 as enhancements to the IBM z/OS® V2.1 operating system (OS) and the IBM zEnterprise EC12 (zEC12) and the IBM zEnterprise BC12 (zBC12). zEDC is optimized for use with large sequential files, and uses an industry-standard compression library. zEDC can help to improve disk usage and optimize cross-platform exchange of data with minimal effect on processor usage. The first candidate for such compression was the System Management Facility (SMF), and support for basic sequential access method (BSAM) and queued sequential access method (QSAM) followed in first quarter 2014. IBM software development kit (SDK) 7 for z/OS Java, IBM Encryption Facility for z/OS, IBM Sterling Connect:Direct® for z/OS and an IBM z/VM® guest can also use zEDC Express. zEDC can also be used for Data Facility Storage Management Subsystem data set services (DFSMSdss) dumps and restores, and for DFSMS hierarchical storage manager (DFSMShsm) when using DFSMSdss for data moves. This IBM Redbooks® publication describes how to set up the zEDC functionality to obtain the benefits of portability, reduced storage space, and reduced processor use for large operational sets of data with the most current IBM System z® environment. Please note that the additional material referenced in the text is not available from IBM.

Abstract: This IBM® Redbooks® publication provides performance tuning tips and best practices for IBM Business Process Manager (IBM BPM) V8.5.5 (all editions) and IBM Business Monitor V8.5.5. These products represent an integrated development and runtime environment based on a key set of service-oriented architecture (SOA) and business process management (BPM) technologies. Such technologies include Service Component Architecture (SCA), Service Data Object (SDO), Business Process Execution Language (BPEL) for web services, and Business Processing Modeling Notation (BPMN). Both IBM Business Process Manager and Business Monitor build on the core capabilities of the IBM WebSphere® Application Server infrastructure. As a result, Business Process Manager solutions benefit from tuning, configuration, and best practices information for WebSphere Application Server and the corresponding platform Java virtual machines (JVMs). This book targets a wide variety of groups, both within IBM (development, services, technical sales, and others) and customers. For customers who are either considering or are in the early stages of implementing a solution incorporating Business Process Manager and Business Monitor, this document proves a useful reference. The book is useful both in terms of best practices during application development and deployment and as a reference for setup, tuning, and configuration information. This book talks about many issues that can influence performance of each product and can serve as a guide for making rational first choices in terms of configuration and performance settings. Similarly, customers who already implemented a solution with these products can use the information presented here to gain insight into how their overall integrated solution performance can be improved.

Abstract: This IBM® Redbooks® publication presents a general introduction to Linear Tape-Open (LTO) technology and the implementation of corresponding IBM products. The high-performance, high-capacity, and cost-effective IBM TS1150 tape drive is included. The book highlights the IBM TS4500 tape library, which is the next-generation storage solution that is designed to help midsize and large enterprises respond to storage challenges. The IBM TS1150 tape drive gives organizations an easy way to deliver fast access to data, improve security, and provide long-term retention for less expense than disk solutions. TS1150 offers high-performance, flexible data storage with support for data encryption. This fifth-generation drive can help protect investments in tape automation by offering compatibility with existing automation. This eleventh edition includes information about the latest enhancements to the IBM Ultrium family of tape drives and tape libraries. In particular, it includes details of the latest IBM LTO Ultrium 6 tape drive technology and its implementation in IBM tape libraries. It contains technical information about each IBM tape product for open systems and includes generalized sections about Small Computer System Interface (SCSI) and Fibre Channel connections and multipath architecture configurations. This edition also includes details about Tape System Library Manager (TSLM), which consolidates and simplifies large TS3500 tape library environments, including the IBM Shuttle Complex. This book also covers tools and techniques for library management. It is intended for anyone who wants to understand more about IBM tape products and their implementation. It is suitable for IBM clients, IBM Business Partners, IBM specialist sales representatives, and technical specialists. If you do not have a background in computer tape storage products, you might need to read other sources of information. In the interest of being concise, topics that are generally understood are not covered in detail.

Abstract: The intricacies of living in contemporary Latin American cities include cases of both empowerment and restriction. In Lima, residents built their own homes and formed community organizations, while in Rio de Janeiro inhabitants of the favelas needed to be "pacified" in anticipation of international sporting events. Aspirations to "get ahead in life" abound in the region, but so do multiple limitations to realizing the dream of upward mobility. This volume captures the paradoxical histories and experiences of urban life in Latin America, offering new empirical and theoretical insights to scholars

Abstract: Ist Kunst eine Form des Handelns?

Abstract: After her traditional engagement to her high school sweetheart falls apart, Liza Monroy faced the prospect of another devastating loss: the deportation of her best friend Emir. Desperate to stay in America, Emir tried every legal recourse to obtain a green card knowing that his return to the Middle East--where gay men are often beaten and sometimes killed--was too dangerous. So Liza proposes to Emir in efforts to keep him safe and by her side. After a fast wedding in Las Vegas, the couple faces new adventures and obstacles in both L.A. and New York City as they dodge the INS. Their relationship is compounded further by the fact that Liza's mother works for the State Department preventing immigration fraud. Through it all, Liza and Emir must contend with professional ambition, adversity, and heartbreak and eventually learn the true lessons of companionship and devotion. This marriage that was not a marriage, in the end, really was. The Marriage Act is a timely and topical look at the changing face of marriage in America and speaks to the emergent generation forming bonds outside of tradition--and sometimes even outside the law.

Abstract: Was ist eigentlich gemeint mit Kultur?

Abstract: Since the 1990s, internationally-supported peacebuilding interventions have become increasingly prominent. Activities focusing on rule of law and security institutions are a key component of this agenda. Despite increasing calls for more rigorous analysis of the impact of peacebuilding interventions, conceptual advances have been limited. There is little clarity on what is working, what is not, and why. This SSR Paper seeks to address this gap by mapping relevant approaches and methodologies to measuring impact. It examines how international actors have approached these questions in relation to support to rule of law and security institutions in complex peacebuilding environments. Most significantly, the paper demonstrates that measuring impact is not only feasible but necessary in order to maximise the effectiveness of major international investments in this field

Abstract: Controversies and problems with regard to language policy and language education still exist in Malaysia. Despite the attempts of language policy makers to promote multilingualism, the implementation has been marred by political and religious affiliations. Malaysia is a melting pot of many different cultures and ethnicities, the three largest being Malay, Chinese and Indian. Therefore, an analysis of the language variation in this polyglot nation will help in understanding the variety of languages and those who speak them. This book gathers the work of researchers working in the field of language change in Malaysia for over two decades. As there is no book published internationally on the language policy in Malaysia and the effects on the language change in urban migrant populations, this book is a timely contribution not only to an understanding of Malaysian linguistic pluralism and its undercurrents, but also to an understanding of the Indian Diaspora.

Abstract: For all of Brazil's efforts to reduce poverty-and its progress-the favelas in Rio de Janeiro still house one-third of the city's poor, and violence permeates every aspect of the city. As urban drug gangs and police wage war in the streets, favela residents who are especially vulnerable live in fear of being caught in the crossfire. Politicians, human rights activists, and security authorities have been working to minimize the social and economic problems at the root of this "war." Living in the Crossfire presents impassioned testimony from officials, residents, and others in response to the ongoing crisis. Maria Helena Moreira Alves and Philip Evanson provide vivid accounts from grieving mothers and members of the police working to stop the war and, among officials, from Brazil's President Luis Inácio Lula da Silva, who discusses his efforts to improve public security.

Abstract: This book examines design proposals that show symbolic handling of the 9/11 attack on New York, the disaster symbolism of the ship washed ashore by the tsunami in Banda Aceh, and the design of the symbol of the city of Cape Town derived from a remnant of Dutch colonial architecture, or the mass pilgrimage to Elvis’s Graceland in Memphis. Cities Full of Symbols develops urban symbolic ecology and hypercity approaches into a new perspective on social cohesion. Approaches of architects, anthropologists, sociologists, social geographers and historians converge to make this a book for anyone interested in urban life, policymaking and city branding.

Abstract: Although subject to little discussion, the UN has increasingly paid private military and security companies (PMSCs) for a range of services in the areas of humanitarian affairs, peacebuilding and development. However, this practice has rarely translated into coherent policies or guidelines that could guide the UN in setting standards or ensuring responsible contracting procedures. This paper explores UN demand for PMSCs and identifies the need for a more proactive, sensitive and deliberate political approach in order to avoid potential pitfalls associated with involving PMSCs in the delivery of UN tasks
