    Abstract: Im Gartenland des Dorfes Malingdam/Imarin erzeugt ein Mann namens Uwok durch Sägen mit einem Rotan-Strang auf einem Holzstück Feuer. Er hält das Holzstück, das auf leicht brennbarem Material liegt, mit den Füßen fest. In zwei Einstellungen wird der Vorgang auch in Zeitdehnung (64 B/s) gezeigt.
    Abstract: In his garden on a low plain below the settlements Uwok, a leading man in Malingdam, makes fire. He presses a split stick with the feet to the ground, passes a rotan string underneath and "saws" until glowing sawdust is dropping on the "tinder" (dried leaves) placed below. After several vain attempts (breaking of the rotan string) Uwok finally succeeds in producing a blaze.

    Abstract: Sinkin, ein Junge aus Malingdam, beschäftigt sich mit dem Flächenverschränkspiel "Haus der Fledermaus" (tetim aik), indem er zwei Bananenblattstücke z. T. in schmale Streifen auflöst und ineinander verflicht. Es entsteht ein kegelförmiges Geflecht. Drei Jungen kommen hinzu und suchen ihn mit einer besseren und feineren Arbeit zu übertreffen.
    Abstract: In Malingdam the boy Sinkin executes the plaiting game "house of the bat" (tetim aik). He detaches from two pieces of banana leaves narrow strips which he interlaces. He is joined by three other boys who try to surpass him by attaining a better "performance", a finer interlacing.

    Abstract: Uwok, a leading man in Malingdam, cultivates his taro garden at an altitude of 2100 metres: He uproots the weeds, heaps them up around the taro plants (Colocasia esculenta) as green manure, takes up sods of grass with the digging stick, and places them upside-down about the plants. Uwok harvests taro and plants the sprout again. He roasts small taro tubers in the fire for a spontaneous meal.

Carelessly Uwok leaves the hair pulled off on the ground.

    Abstract: After several years of fallow the garden area below Malingdam is cultivated again. After chopping down the secondary vegetation, the slope is terraced with the digging stick and with the hands. The beds are planted with sweet potato cuttings and taro sprouts. The work is done individually: every man prepares and cultivates "his" plot of ground owned by the community.

    Abstract: The bent hut of a family in Malingdam/Imarin is reconstructed with the help of men and boys of the settlement. The new house, a circular building with a saddle-roof, is built with prepared materials in one day, within nine hours. Posts, beams, poles, and boards are only attached by rotan strings. Food cooked in the earth oven is distributed to the helpers.

    Abstract: Geschnitten wird den Hang hinunter, jeweils auf das noch stehende Getreide zu. Der geschnittene Roggen wird mit der Sichel hochgehoben und zu Garben gebunden. Zum Trocknen kommen 15 Garben mit den Ähren nach unten auf ein Holzgestell (Mandlan). Die vorletzte und letzte Garbe werden auseinandergefächelt wie eine Kappe und mit heraushängenden Halmen verbunden. Vier Mandlan ergeben einen Schober. Die trockenen Mandlan werden auf dem Rücken in das Futterhaus getragen.
    Abstract: In late July, early August the rye is harvested. Before harvesting, which is done by all members of the family, the reaping-tools are sharpened by beating the cutting-edges flat. During reaping the tools are sharpened again with a whet stone. When the reaped rye is bound, it is put on wooden frames and left to dry. The dried rye is carried into the barn.

    Abstract: In St. Jakob (Ahrntal) wird das Vieh vom Ortspfarrer gesegnet (27.5.1963). Auf der langen Talstraße ziehen die Herden taleinwärts nach Prettau. Am Spätnachmittag erreichen sie die Obere Tauernalm; dort nächtigen sie. Am nächsten Morgen beginnt der Aufstieg durch Schneefelder zum Tauern. Steil geht der Weg jenseits des 2634 m hohen Joches ins Windbachtal hinunter.

    Abstract: Eine Gruppe Heimatvertriebener aus dem Böhmerwald führt im Studio des IWF zum Dokumentationszweck den Schwerttanz vor, der aus zwei Teilen (Walzer und Marsch) besteht. In beiden Teilen werden die folgenden Figuren getanzt: Schwertbrücke, Schwertschwelle, Paschen.
    Abstract: A group of refugees from Bohemian Foerst performs in a studio the sword dance of the Bohemian Forest. The dance consists of two parts: The sword bridge, the sword thershold, and the so-called "Paschen". The dance is shown twice, the first time in full view without change of camera angle, the second with respective camera shots of the various steps and movements.

    Abstract: The film shows the performance of the Überlingen sword dance in 1962. It begins with the morning breakfast of the colour-comppany and of the "Hänsele". After forming up the colour-copmany and the rest of the companies march to divine service and then to the town hall square. After the burgomaster has given his approval the dance is performed. The sword dance is followed by a maidens' dance. A second performance of the sworrd dance was filmed once again.

    Abstract: Der Bootsbaumeister und seine Leute bauen in 8tägiger Arbeit aus dem Stamm von Hernandia peltata ein 8,32 m langes Auslegerboot: Baumfällen; Ausschlagen, Zusammensetzen und -binden der einzelnen Teile. Nach einem Festmahl wird das fertiggestellte, brandungstüchtige Paddelboot auf dem offenen Meer erprobt.
    Abstract: Shows all of the important phases of construction as a master boat builder and his people build an outrigger boat in the old style of Niutao. Trees are felled and individual parts are cut out of them - the hull, bow and stern pieces, planks, outrigger, etc. Precision and the assembly process are done and coconut-fiber cord is used to connect the pieces. After eight working days the craft is finished; a feast is held, and the boat is tested in the open sea.

Die Haken werden hinter dem Boot hergezogen. Die gefangenen Bonitos werden von dem achtern sitzenden Fischfangmeister mit einem Schwung eingeholt.
    Abstract: Large outrigger boats equipped with poles and typical mother-of-pearl hooks take to the sea in order to catch bonitos. Flocks of sea birds indicate the presence of the fish. As the boat moves quickly across the surface the hooks are pulled along in the water. As soon as a fish swallows a hook a master fisherman uses a pole to haul the bonito into the boat.

A native uses climbing cords and standing wood for assistance in cutting leaves from a coconut palm tree; the leaves are plaited into a roof covering.     Abstract: Withies are cut, split into three parts and pointed. Rye straw is combed out with a wooden rake, the ears are cut off. The beehive is coiled from a single bundle of straw, which is pulled through a template ring made of cow horn to ensure uniformity of size. The basketry technique is known as "wrapped and pierced coiling" whereby the coil is wrapped and interlocked with the split withies. The bell top is shaped first, followed by the cylindrical walls with the flight entrance for the bees. The finished skep is about 38 cm high.

    Abstract: Unter der Leitung eines Hausbaumeisters wird auf dem Siedlungsplatz in 19tägiger Gemeinschaftsarbeit ein Vierpfostenhaus mit rechteckigem Grundriß und einem Giebeldach mit geradem First errichtet. Das 9,95 m lange, 7,25 m breite und 5,35 m hohe, aus Holz erbaute und mit Pandanusblättern bedeckte Haus dient als Familienschlafhaus.
    Abstract: Gives a complete overview of the 19 working days needed to build a sleeping house on Niutao. The work is initiated by the master house builder who supervises the construction. The structure is a four-post house of rectangular design which has a large gabled roof and a straight ridge. Timber is cut from the surrounding bush; individual pieces are tied together with coconut-fiber cord. The roof is made up of treated pandanus leaves.

    Abstract: Mädchen flechten einen Korb aus einem frischen Kokospalmblatt und füllen ihn mit Düngeblättern. Ein alter Mann erntet eine Pulakaknolle und pflanzt ihren Stengel in die entstandene Grube, nachdem er die Blätter als Gründüngung in das Loch gelegt hat. Anschließend pflegt er ältere Pulaka, indem er Haltestäbe in den Boden steckt, diese mit geflochtenen Ringen zusammenhält und Gründüngung dazugibt.
    Abstract: Specially cultivated taro pits are used to grow a crude variety of dry taro (pulaka) on the coral island of Niutao. Typical cultivation work is shown here: girls collect leaves for the foundation; an old man harvests a pulaka tuber and plants the resulting stalks; and a one-year-old plant is treated with soil and fertilizing leaves.

    Abstract: In einer Bauernstube in Mardorf sitzen drei Mädchen und versehen ungefärbte Eier mit geometrischen und pflanzlichen Ornamenten sowie mit Sprüchen. Zum Verzieren verwenden sie flüssiges Bienenwachs und Schreibfedern. Die Eier werden in heiße Farbbrühe getaucht. Anschließend wird das Wachs mit einem weichen Tuch abgerieben. Die Ornamente erscheinen weiß auf farbigem Grund.
    Abstract: In a farmhouse in Mardorf three girls decorate eggs with geometric or plant ornaments and with sayings using liquid beeswax and pens. The eggs are dipped into hot dye. Afterwards the wax is rubbed off with a smooth cloth. The ornaments occur white on a coloured ground.

    Abstract: Die Hüllen von eben geernteten Kokosnüssen vergräbt man für drei Monate im Schlamm, bevor sie, gesäubert und getrocknet, von alten Männern zu drei verschiedenen Schnurarten gedrillt und geflochten werden. Zum Schluß werden typische Kokosschnurbindungen bei einer Bootsreparatur gezeigt.
    Abstract: Old men harvest certain coconuts, remove the hulls, and bury these in the mud at the lagoon. After three months the hulls are recovered, cleaned, and dried. The elders of the community then gather to prepare rope from the fibers of the coconut hulls. Three types of cord are produced using two, three, or four strains of the fiber. Typical coconut-fiber cord bindings are shown being used in boat repair.

    Abstract: Die Sichte (Kniesense) wird auf dem Hof gedengelt und auf dem Feld gewetzt. Mit der Sichte in der Rechten und mit dem Mathaken zum Abteilen der Halme in der Linken schneiden zwei Männer Roggen gegen das noch stehende Korn.     Abstract: The short-handled scythe is sharpended. Holding the scythe in the right and a hook for comparting the blades in the left hand men cut rye. After 8 chops the corn is taken away by the reapers and women bind it into sheaves with two straw strings and lay them in long rows.

    Abstract: Weidenruten werden geschnitten, in drei Teile gesplissen und angespitzt. Stroh wird mit einer hölzernen Harke ausgekämmt, die Ähren werden abgeschnitten. Der Korb wird aus einer einzigen Strohwulstspirale gebildet, die, um eine gleichmäßige Dicke zu erreichen, durch einen Ring aus Kuhhorn gezogen wird. Der Wulst wird mit Weidenruten umflochten. Es entsteht zuerst die Kuppel, dann der zylindrische Schaft mit dem Flugloch. Der Korb ist etwa 38 cm hoch.
