Abstract: Three circuits of ditches comprise the Windmill Hill enclosure, which was re-examined in 1988 as part of wider research into the area's Neolithic sequence and environment, and the context in which monuments were built, used and abandoned. Detailed results are set out by category and theme, and abundant environmental evidence is presented covering soils, land snails, plant remains, charcoals, pollen, amphibian and small mammal remains. This volume advances many theories on the enclosure's symbolism: inclusion and exclusion, the relationship between culture and nature or between people and their surroundings. The authors suggest that the monument drew on the memory of the past and may itself have been a metaphor for time. Deposits reveal a wide range of use including subsistence, eating, drinking, perhaps feasting, alliance, exchange, death and expression of gender roles. The later history of the enclosure, in the later Neolithic and Early Bronze Age, is also considered

Abstract: This work presents the findings of research conducted from 1988 to 1993 near the étang de Berre. On the basis of systematic surveying, soundings and the excavation of a Gallo - Roman establishment,F Trément situates the major sites of Saint-Blaise and the Fossæ Marianæ in a globally and dynamically perceived space. Using earth and life sciences (geomorphology, sedimentology, palynology…). and with recourse to texts and iconography, the archaeologist broadens his focus, to encompass the landscape in its entirety. This microregion is characterised by numerous closed depressions, which explain the high population density during the Neolithic, the Iron Age and in Antiquity, and constitute sedimentary records of the evolution of the surroundings. The author seeks to understand how the successive waterside communities adapted to this shifting and harsh environment, how they appropriated the space and set about exploiting it, more or less consciously, leaving their mark, more or less enduring

Abstract: Established where the Île-de-France region meets Normandy, the rural sanctuary in Bennecourt was occupied from the 2nd century BC to the 4th century AD. Excavations camed out from 1982 to 1988 have revealed the gradual progression from a Gallic enclosure housing a small building on pillars, to a vast peribolus surrounding three stone temples A set of secondary features and an abundant collection of artefacts (close to 25,000 objects and fragments) have been preserved, making this a reference site for northern Gaul. After a detailed study of the structures and the artefacts, the author Luc Bourgeois presents an overview that suggests some directions tor research on Celtic cult structures and their evolution in Gallo-Roman era : a nuanced approach to architectural filiation, aspects of sacrificial cooking and the place occupled by this type of site in a regional framework

Abstract: Vestiges of Gallo-Roman workshops that were in activity between the 1st and 3rd centuries AD in the city of Augustodunum were found in the course of work carried out at the Lycée militaire in Autun. The workshop buildings are described in detail and situated in their urban setting. The different crafts activities are studied closely: metalworking with copper and iron alloys, ceramics, crafts of bone. This work has enhanced our knowledge of the chain of production in metallurgical crafts in particular. Fresh data on the manufacture of common objects such as brass fibulae and bells of bronze coated iron sheet is obtained from the analysis of mould fragments, of furnace remains and of forge slag and waste. Crafts emerge as a major feature of the economy in the city of the Aedui, according to processes already identified at Bibracte. The rich documentation of this work constitutes a significant contribution to research on crafts in ancient times

Abstract: Three Upper Palaeolithic sites have been discovered during the construction of the A5 motorway between Melun and Troyes.Marolles-sur-Seine, in the Seine-et-Mame area, is related to the other Magdaleman sites discovered in the Paris basin. The excellent preservation of the finds (silex, animal bones, heated stones) has made possible a palaeoethnological study of this horse hunting site, a type of research rarely possible in a rescue excavation Technological analysis of the lithic from Lailly (Aungnacian), in the Yonne area, and Fontvannes (Perigordian ?), in the Aube area, has revealed the production techniques for three kinds of artefacts blades, flakes and bladelets. These two sites increase the importance of the Vanne valley in the understanding of occupation of the south east of the Paris basin.Following the publication about the Middle Palaeolithic sites of the Sens area (dAf number 47), this volume renews the study of early Prehistory in this region

Abstract: This volume is one of the first scientific publications devoted to the archaeological research covering Bronze Age occupation (20th-14th centuries BC) carried out during the construction of the northern ring road around the city of Lyon. It has been possible interpret the vestiges discovered as belonging to rural centresorclusters of dwellings established at a site on the Bank of the valley. The sets of objects studied, primarily ceramics, have come to constitute a valuable reference resource for the Lyon region. They testify to a composite cultural profile for the early Bronze Age. combining northern and southern characteristics, while the Bell Beaker cultural background subsists. During the late Bronze I period, however. the southern features give way to influences of the Jura and Burgundian regions and those derived from the north-western façade of the Alps. Palaeo-environmental studies conducted in conjunction with the archaeological work provide the basis for an investigation of the landscape during the Bronze Age and the foundation of the populations’ subsistence economy, in keeping with the basic outlines established for the temperate regions of Western Europe

Abstract: The studies compiled here all pertain to the same area, located between the Charente river valley and the Saintonge marshlands, a perpetually shifting and inhospitable setting that constitutes a privileged held of study for grasping the numerous and complex interactions between the human populations and their natural environment A seaside site and a plains site were excavated at the time of a motorway construction protect (the A 837 between Saintes and Rochefort), and the vestiges found illustrate the diversity of settlement and uses of these lands. In La Challonnière a saltworks (4th-3rd century BC) was uncovered and its activities retraced m detail, as well as an early Middle Ages settlement and its ceramic artefacts typical of Saintonge workshops. In Mortantambe a small rural homestead (2nd-7st century BO was examined along with the evidence of its economy (farming, hunting fishing metal working. J. and structures and graves attesting occupation from the 8th to the 9th century In parallel, the progression of the filling-in of the estuary was retraced by means of multidisciplinary analysis of deep sondages These studies make a fundamental contribution to the history of the settlement and the countryside in the Rochefort hinterland

Abstract: This work introduces the initial results of research at sites occupied by Native Americans in the Sinnamary basin (1660-220 BP), carried ont at the time of the construction of the Petit Saut dam by Electricité de France in French Guyana. A methodological approach pertaining to the tropical sylvan and riparian milieu is followed by a study of the open-air sites, and a commentary focusing on the phenomenon of terra preta and palaeolithic fires. For the first time a typological tramework and a vocabulary are proposed for reference to lithic senes and polishing-tool sites. This work also includes a study of ceramics using two complementary approaches: determination of place of manufacture based on the Chemical make-up of the pestes employed, and codification of the forms and motifs of the 22,000 objects registered. Following up on the publication devoted to the colonial period in this region (dAf 60), this volume makes a signifiant contribution to the renewal of histonographical work on the Guyana plateau

Abstract: An OverView is presented here of the studies conducted at this prestigious site, where as a rural, then an urban space developed. the traces left by humankind from prehistoric times to the 19th century have accumulated. The trenches and material of farmers of Neolithic and protohistoric times gave way to a silt quarry, then to the plots of land in a suburbium outside of Lutetia, still present in the 9th century. A 14th century manor house, decorated with mural paintings, preceded the city’s encroachment on this area, seen in the Charles V city wall and the neighbouring faubourg, while the tile Works continued to be active for three centuries. In the 16th century the site was drastically altered by the construction of the Tuileries castle and the Jardin Neuf. Interpretation of the numerous vestiges, supported by palaeoenvironmental studies and archival documents, provides new and sometimes unexpected data on land use before urbanisation, on the social status of the inhabitants, on the fate of renowned edifices. This book tells a story. "the story of a small piece of Paris", one of the great seats of the history of France. In the heart of Paris, the Grand Louvre project led to urban excavation on an exceptional scale. This archaeofogical operation was a model of its kind, both by the nature of its findings and its state-of-the-art exploration strategies

Abstract: Archaeological research carried out in Lyon since 1971 at three major sites, the cathedral complex and the churches and graveyards of Saint-Just and Saint-Laurent-de-Choulans, has changed our understanding of the topography of the town during the early Christian period. Lyon, federal capital of the Cauls and later capital of the Burgundian kings. was from the IVth to VIIIth centuries an ecclesiastical centre of prime importance. The remains oftwo churches and of a baptistery forming an épiscopal group (one of the first to be completely excavated). the basilicas built on the tombs of saints and the graveyards, are evidence of the creation of a new Christian architecture, respecting antique traditions, and of the Christianisation of funerary practices. Thorough analysis of the archaeological evidence, confronted with archivai sources and documents, confirms the vitality and prestige of Lugdunum christianum

Abstract: By studying both the archaeological evidence and the written records, this volume provides a new means of interpreting and reconstructing the history of an important fortified site of the middle Euphrates valley, Qalat Jabar, and clarifies its connection with the neighbouring regions. A detailed classification of the pottery finds from the late eleventh to the fourteenth centuries provides a chronological framework for the major changes in ceramic production - a valuable model which can be used for other sites. This is an example of the detailed archaeological research that has greatly advanced our understanding of the history of the Euphrates valley in the Middle Ages

Abstract: In Usable Pasts, fourteen authors examine the manipulation of traditional expressions among a variety of groups from the United States and Canada: the development of a pictorial style by Navajo weavers in response to traders, Mexican American responses to the appropriation of traditional foods by Anglos, the expressive forms of communication that engender and sustain a sense of community in an African American women's social club and among elderly Yiddish folksingers in Miami Beach, the incorporation of mass media images into the ""C&Ts"" (customs and traditions) of a Boy Scout troop, the changing meaning of their defining Exodus-like migration to Mormons, Newfoundlanders' appropriation through the rum-drinking ritual called the Schreech-In of outsiders' stereotypes, outsiders' imposition of the once-despised lobster as the emblem of Maine, the contest over Texas's heroic Alamo legend and its departures from historical fact, and how yellow ribbons were transformed from an image in a pop song to a national symbol of ""resolve.""...

Abstract: The excavations at Silbury Hill in the late 1960s were broadcast to the world on television and generated a huge amount of excitement, but until now have not been published. This report gives a full account of the excavation and discusses the archaeological and environmental evidence from the tunnel, the ditch section and the cuttings on the top of the mound, as well as the radiocarbon dates. Neolithic enclosures at nearby West Kennet have been the subject of research excavations since 1987, carried out by Cardiff university. One is a nearly circular double enclosure that straddles the present Kennet, the other is a larger elliptical enclosure. The character of the palisades, their construction, the finds and the radiocarbon dates are fully reported. Very importantly there is an extensive discussion of the interpretation of Silbury Hill and the enclosures and of their relation to each other and to the other features of the Neolithic landscape: the Sanctuary, the West Kennet Avenue and Avebury itself

Abstract: The construction of the dam at Petit Saut by Électricité de France in the French Guyane gave place to an important archaeological rescue operation. Carried out from 1990 to 1995, this was the largest ever programme for an overseas French department of which the history was scarcely known. This volume represents the results of these researches in the Sinnamary river basin for the last four centuries of our millenium. Based on archives, travellers tales, old maps and archaeological work, this study brings new elements to the history of this part of South America : the formation of the colony during the 17th and 18th centuries, its settlement, its economy and material culture. With the development of gold production from the 19th century, the Guyane appears to be another California. The jail at Saut Tigre was created in 1933 for Indochinese prisoners who worked on development projects in the Inini territory up until 1944. This work contains an important dictionary of place-names which constitutes a documentary source without precedent. A second volume will soon be consecrated to the Amerindian sites discovered during the same operation

Abstract: This study gives an account of the results of the archaeological excavations of the Gallo-Roman village at Roanne (Rodumna). The research is based mainly on 22 assemblages of material dating from the 1st century B.C. to the 3rd century A.D., including glassware, iron and bronze objects, and above all an exceptional corpus of pottery. Detailed analysis of the pottery and its relationship with the rest of the material enabled a chronology to be established. Using criteria such as frequency, use, variety of pottery production, datation, origins, etc., this chronology was found to be in continuity with previously studied Gaulish horizons. A series of illustrations places the material within the context of its discovery. The results of this study lead to an outline of the economic development of Rodumna - a small, rural town, built of clay and wood, very much in keeping with Gaulish tradition. This new volume in the dAf collection continues the study of the Gaulish occupations of Roanne begun in the recently published dAf 62. These two volumes, along with the publication on Feurs (dAf 14), constitute an exceptional documentation about the antique Segusiavi region

Abstract: Construction work on the TGV Nord railway discovered the exceptional gaulish site of Montmartin/La Fosse Muette. A rich aristocratic dwelling was uncovered and the abundance of small finds shows the diversity of the craft activities (metal working, pottery production...). In addition, a public and religious space was observed, composed of a small temple, similar to the famous site of Gournay-sur-Aronde, along with an attached public square or meeting place. This represents a first-rate document for the religious practices (notably for the treatment of corpses) and the gaulish warrior society, that of the equites described by Caesar

Abstract: This book provides a synthesis of the archeological research carried out in the town of Roanne (Loire) It was the site of a small Roman town whose name on the Peutinger Table and in Ptolomey is recorded as Rodumna and whose Gallic origin has been recognised since the 1950s. The small agglomeration of the late Iron Age became a maior centre of population in the Gallo roman civitas ot the SegusiaviThe work includes a detailed catalogue of the finds which can act as a basis for comparisons with other sites in central Gaul. The evolution of the settlement area from the 2nd and 1st centuries BC is described in detail. The study of the linds shows an important analysis of then evolution and the different stages of development in what was a crucial period for the history of Gaul culminating in the « romanization ». The discoveries also allow an interpretation of several aspects of daily life : the domestic architecture, diet industries, trade… Based on the material culture, these studies allow us to deal with certain aspects of the economy and to describe the material culture of theSegusiavi within the regional context. This volume is followed by another monograph in the Daf series on the Gallo-Raman occupation

Abstract: Shirting front a systematic study of Roman amphora discovered at approximately one hundred sites in the north-east of Gaul, this research treats certain aspects of provincial economic history, regarding impart and consumption of foods under the Roman Empire in the region, which, in Antiquity, was strategically situated on an important crossroad, the joining of the Rhône corridor with the "Germanic limes". The original aspects are tested through the analysis of the morphology, epigraphy and macroscopic description of the clay material of these recipients. The observation of the differences in distribution helps us to understand the directions of economic currents over lime and specific consumer habits whether in urban or rural areas

Abstract: The excavations carried out on the lines of the A28 an A29 motorways have brought to light two sites from the Middle Palacolithic (-300 000 - -30 000). The desposits at Pucheuil and at Etoutteville (Haute-Normandie) yielded important lithic series with numerous reassemblies of waste flakes. At Pucheuil, two human occupations were observed in the context of a doline. They ear individualized by their particular technological traditions which both stem from the santé chain of production : the Levallois technique. This, in association with a volumetric conception of the nucleus which resembles those of the Upper Palaeolithic, characterises the laminar production of Etoutteville. The spatial analysis of the reassembled groups of material identify the site as a knapping workshop. These results, complemented by a presentation of the geomorphological and stratigraphical frameworks, represent a solid contribution to our knowledge of the Prehistory of north-west Europe

Abstract: A large campaign of excavations has saved the gaulish tumulus of Courtesoult (Haute-Saône) from destruction. These researches have put into evidence two main phases of construction and use of the monument which includes 45 tombs. These have been the subject of detailed anthropological and palaeodentographical studies. The typological analysis of the small finds, mainly composed of dress items (brooches, bracelets, belt hooks, coral beads), gives a date ranging from the Hallstatt D1 to the La Tène A period. The data From Courtesoult can be put up against that of other burial sites, such as Gy, Mantoche or Savoyeux. It gives further details concerning the evolution of funeral practices from the first Iron Age in the region between the Jura and Burgundy. This area had hitherto given rise to no recent research far this period

Abstract: Considered as the result of the barbarian invasions in 275 AD, four late roman town defences have been examinated here, Bordeaux, Dax, Périgueux and Bazas. The caracterstics of each one depend one depend on its past, on its role during the late roman period, on the various solutions adopted by the constructors and the date to which one can attribute the defances. However, in their general conception, the construction methods of the rampart, the details of organisation of defensive structures (positioning of towers, small number of gates, absence of ditches, abundance or rarety of reused building materials), these fortified towns do not represent individual cases but take their place within a system of defence created at different dates between the gallic empire and the end of roman domination in south-west Gaul

Abstract: Discovered during the construction of a four- lane trunk road (N 176) near Dinan, the Iron Age farm at Le Boisanne is but a modest rural settlement ; it constituted however an ideal subject of study. One can follow without interruption its evolution during a very long period, from the 4th century BC up to the 3rd century AD. The stratigraphy, the structures and the artefacts are presented in detail. The farm is placed in its context, both geographical (the Rance estuary) and historic (Armorican Iron Age). This study is concluded by a broad reflection, extending outside the purely regional framework: on the function and evolution of "native farms" or aedificia (archaeological myth or reality ?) of the Iron Age and gallo-roman periods

Abstract: Situated in South-Western Provence in the massif of Sainte-Baume, some thirty kilometres from Marseille, the Grotte des Cèdres (Var) was first excavated during the 1950s. In 1987 re-excavation took place and comprised the reexamination of conserved standing stratification. This re-examination permitted the identification of two human occupation levels, both of short periods, situated in a cool environment at the end of the Middle Pleistocene. With the identification of a new lithic industry. the discovery of the largest quantity of Tahr Rissien remains in Europe belonging to a new species, and the determination of new sub-species of Rodents and Rabbit, this site is now to be placed amongst those of major importance for the Mediterranean Europe, which is further increased by the presence of a human remain

Abstract: One of the large international and interdisciplinary research projects on the Palaeolithic of France during the middle of the 20th century was the excavation of the abri Pataud (Les Eyzies, Dordogne). From this project, directed by Hallam L. Movius, Jr., came innovations in excavation technique and artifact analysis that have contributed to the methodological synthesis underlying current research. The abri Pataud is one of the key sequences of the earlier Upper Palaeolithic in the Southwest. The publication began in 1975 but was left unfinished because of the death of Pr Movius in 1987. His closest collaborators have summarized here the results of the project, including unpublished studies of the Protomagdalenian, Middle Perigordian, and Aurignacian occupations, new radiocarbon dates, a reappraisal of the geochronology, and an extensively annotated catalogue of Aurignacian and Perigordian sites in Dordogne which allows the abri Pataud to be seen in its regional context

Abstract: Discovered during the construction of the A5 motorway, the early metalworking site of the Clérimois (Yonne) delivered the remains of some ten workshops which produced iron between the 4th century B.C. and the 5th century A. D. The published results are many: descriptions and typologies of the structures (18 furnaces studied), anthracology and analyses of the ores and slags. The study of the forges has allowed an estimation of the overall production: 5 000 tonnes of iron from 15 500 tonnes of smelted ore. Four fifths of this iron was produced between the end of the La Tène period and the 2nd century A.D. by large furnaces equipped with systems for removing the slag. These data can already be considered as a reference in the study of ancient metallurgy

Abstract: While it was once believed that agriculture and pottery developed concurrently in prehistoric societies, modern research has concluded that agriculture preceded pottery making, since a sedentary life with greater food production led to both the need and time to create storage containers. Bruce Huckell has been at the forefront of a movement in Arizona archaeology that has greatly modified our understanding of the transition from the Archaic to the agricultural periods in the Southwest. Work done by Huckell and others at Matty Canyon has produced the most detailed account available of a Late Archaic village and has been extremely influential in suggesting that the cultivation of maize predated the appearance of pottery. Of Marshes and Maize presents archaeological information obtained from small-scale investigations at two deeply buried preceramic sites in the Cienega Creek Basin. Its report on excavations at the Donaldson Site and at Los Ojitos offers a thorough description of archaeological features and artifacts, floral and faunal remains, and their geological and chronological contexts. From this data, the author concludes that a major shift toward a sedentary lifeway dependent on maize agriculture had already occurred by Late Archaic times (c. 500 to 800 B.C.), demonstrating that previous research on late preceramic sites in this region has provided an inadequate picture of the period. This monograph represents the first full presentation in the literature of an important set of data that is well-known among researchers but has thus far not been easily accessible. It is a classic example of the use of fragmentary evidence in well-dated contexts to introduce new ideas, and will stand not only as an important record of the evidence but also as the primary reference for this significant new interpretation of the late Archaic and the introduction of agriculture into the Southwest
