    Abstract: Dans la France du dix-neuvième siècle, l’institution familiale se trouve dans une phase de transition historique, et dans une position à la fois triomphale et contestée. Avec l’avènement de la classe et des valeurs bourgeoises portées par la Révolution se répand le modèle domestique bourgeois ; les familles de type nobiliaire ou paysan, enracinées dans une terre et une tradition, prises dans un réseau de relations lignagères et communautaires, et placées sous l’autorité du père, reculent devant le ménage mobile, autonome, rassemblé par l’amour autour de la mère et des enfants, qui caractérise notre civilisation industrielle et urbaine. Ce livre interroge la façon dont les intellectuels du dix-neuvième siècle ont pensé la mutation de la famille, considérée dans son rôle de médiateur entre l’individuel et le social. La première partie fait le point sur l’état de l’institution dans l’avant-dernier siècle, telle que nous pouvons la penser aujourd’hui. La famille est appréhendée en tant que maisonnée dans l’espace, et lignée dans le temps ; dans le jeu de ses alliances et l’enchaînement de ses filiations ; dans ses fonctions sexuelle, économique, autoritaire et, de plus en plus, sentimentale ; sans oublier les infractions qui tout ensemble contestent et confirment ses règles. La deuxième partie examine comment, de la Révolution à l’aube de la Troisième République, la famille a suscité chez les penseurs différents types de discours : des formules conservatrices qui se réclament du nom du Père et de la Tradition, patriarcalisme et phallocentrisme ; en antithèse, des formules de contestation qui opposent à la famille un utopisme totalitaire (focalisé sur la Cité), libertaire (recentré sur le moi) ou féministe (défenseur du sexe opprimé) ; enfin, des formules « progressistes » qui affirment les droits de l’individu, du citoyen et du coeur, paternalisme éclairé, réformisme libéral, et familialisme romantique.     Abstract: Adrian Daub's The Dynastic Imagination offers an unexpected account of modern German intellectual history through frameworks of family and kinship. Modernity aimed to brush off dynastic, hierarchical authority and to make society anew through the mechanisms of marriage, siblinghood, and love. It was, in other words, centered on the nuclear family. But as Daub shows, the dynastic imagination persisted, in time emerging as a critical stance by which the nuclear family's conservatism and temporal limits could be exposed. Focusing on the complex interaction between dynasties and national identity-formation in Germany, Daub shows how a lingering preoccupation with dynastic modes of explanation, legitimation, and organization suffused German literature and culture. ​ Daub builds this conception of dynasty in a syncretic study of literature, sciences, and the history of ideas, engaging with remnants of dynastic ideology in the work of Richard Wagner, Émile Zola, and Stefan George, and in the work of early feminists and pioneering psychoanalysts. At every stage of cultural progression, Daub reveals how the relation of dynastic to nuclear families inflected modern intellectual history

Die Autorin nutzt diese umfangreiche Materialsammlung erstmals für eine Untersuchung der Beziehungen von materiellen und sozialen Sphären zwischen 1700 und 1900. Deutlich wird nicht nur, wie ein Grossteil der Schweizer Bevölkerung während dieser Zeit wohnte, sondern auch, welche strukturellen Veränderungen Häuser und die darin lebenden Familien durchliefen. Mit «Hausgeschichten», deren Quellen Häuser inner- und ausserhalb des Freilichtmuseums Ballenberg sind, leistet die Arbeit zudem einen methodischen Beitrag zur materiellen Kulturforschung. Die Fallbeispiele zeigen, dass ländliches Wohnen in der Schweiz dynamisch war und sozial-materielle Grenzen nicht in Stein gemeisselt, sondern situativ wandelbar gewesen sind.

    Abstract: Kings of Mississippi examines how a twentieth-century black middle-class family navigated life in rural Mississippi. The book introduces seven generations of a farming family and provides an organic examination of how the family experienced life and economic challenges as one of few middle-class black families living and working alongside the many struggling black and white sharecroppers and farmers in Gallman, Mississippi. Family narratives and census data across time and a socio-ecological lens help assess how race, religion, education, and key employment options influenced economic and non-economic outcomes. Family voices explain how intangible beliefs fueled socioeconomic outcomes despite racial, gender, and economic stratification. The book also examines the effects of stratification changes across time, including: post-migration; inter- and intra-racial conflicts and compromises; and, strategic decisions and outcomes. The book provides an unexpected glimpse at how a family's ethos can foster upward mobility into the middle-class.

Many studies have explored the English family in the 16th and 17th centuries, focusing on husbands and wives, parents and children. 'The Ties that Bind' explores in depth the other key dimension: the place of brothers and sisters in family life, and in society. Moralists urged mutual love and support between siblings, but recognized that sibling rivalry was a common and potent force. The widespread practice of primogeniture made England distinctive. The eldest son inherited most of the estate and with it, a moral obligation to advance the welfare of his brothers and sisters. 'The Ties that Bind' explores how this operated in practice, and shows how the resentment of younger brothers and sisters made sibling relationships a heated issue in this period, in family life, in print, and also on the stage.

    Abstract: Die historischen Zäsuren von 1945 und 1989/90 haben insbesondere im östlichen Europa zu massiven Umwälzungen geführt - nicht nur hinsichtlich der Entstehung spezifischer Generationen, sondern vor allem auch in Bezug auf Migrationsprozesse. Im Mittelpunkt dieses Bandes steht der Versuch, Perspektiven auf Migration und Generation nah an den Menschen nachzuverfolgen, zu verstehen und zu deuten. Dabei rücken neben den biografischen Erfahrungen und Erzählungen auch die jeweiligen Rahmenbedingungen und Kontexte potenzieller kollektiv-biografisch prägender Prozesse von Dynamik und Wandel im östlichen Europa und darüber hinaus in den Fokus.

    Abstract: "The sixteenth-century changes wrought by expansion of the Spanish empire into Peru shaped the ways of being a family in colonial Peru. Even as migration, race mixture, and transculturation took place, family members fulfilled obligations to one another by adapting custom to a changing world. Family began to shift when, from the moment of their arrival in 1532, Spaniards were joined with elite indigenous women in political marriage-like alliances. Almost immediately, a generation of mestizos was born that challenged the hierarchies of colonial society. In response, the Spanish Crown began to promote the marriage of these men and the travel of Spanish women to Peru to promote good customs and even serve as surrogate parents. Other reactions came from wives in Spain who, abandoned by husbands, sought assistance to fulfill family duties. For indigenous families, the pressures of colonialism prompted migration to cities. By mid-century, the increase of Spanish migration to Peru changed the social landscape, but did not halt mixed-race marriages. The book posits that late sixteenth-century cities, specifically Lima and Arequipa, were host to indigenous and Spanish families but also to numerous 'blended' families borne of a process of mestizaje. In its final chapter, the legacies for the next generation reveal how Spanish fathers sometimes challenged law with custom and sentiment to establish inheritance plans for their children.     Abstract: Liebe und Arbeit wurden bisher selten zusammengedacht. Die Geschichte der Liebe war vor allem ein Thema der Literatur, der bildenden Kunst und des Musiktheaters – weniger der Wissenschaft. Die Geschichte der Arbeit hingegen steht schon lange im Fokus von Ökonomie und Sozialgeschichte. Das vorliegende Buch aus dem Nachlass der Wiener Historikerin Edith Saurer stellt nun erstmals das Verhältnis von Liebe und Arbeit aus einer europäischen Perspektive dar und verbindet dieses mit gesellschafts- und diskursprägenden politischen und sozialen, rechtlichen und kulturellen Phänomenen des 19. und 20. Jahrhunderts. Als Ergebnis zeigt sich, dass einerseits Arbeit ein zentrales Orientierungsmoment darstellt und dass andererseits die Geschlechterliebe an oberster Stelle der Hierarchie der sozialen Beziehungen steht.

    Abstract: This study captures the dynamics of the everyday family life of the common people in Roman Egypt, a social strata that constituted the vast majority of any pre-modern society but rarely figures in ancient sources or in modern scholarship. The documentary papyri and, above all, the private letters and the census returns provide us with a wealth of information on these people not available for any other region of the ancient Mediterranean. The book discusses such things as family composition and household size and the differences between urban and rural families, exploring what can be ascribed to cultural patterns, economic considerations and/or individual preferences by setting the family in Roman Egypt into context with other pre-modern societies where families adopted such strategies to deal with similar exigencies of their daily lives

    Abstract: The word "blood" awakens ancient ideas, but we know little about its historical representation in Western cultures. Anthropologists have customarily studied how societies think about the bodily substances that unite them, and the contributors to this volume develop those questions in new directions. Taking a radically historical perspective that complements traditional cultural analyses, they demonstrate how blood and kinship have constantly been reconfigured in European culture. This volume challenges the idea that blood can be understood as a stable entity, and shows how concepts of blood and kinship moved in both parallel and divergent directions over the course of European history.

    Abstract: People have always lived in families, but what that means has varied dramatically across time and cultures. The family is not a "natural" phenomenon but an institution with a dynamic history stretching 10,000 years into the past. Mary Jo Maynes and Ann Waltner tell the story of this fundamental unit from the beginnings of domestication and human settlement. They consider the codification of rules governing marriage in societies around the ancient world, the changing conceptions of family wrought by the heightened pace of colonialism and globalization in the modern world, and how state policies shape families today. The authors illustrate ways in which differences in gender and generation have affected family relations over the millennia. Cooperation between family members--by birth or marriage--has driven expansions of power and fusions of culture in times and places as different as ancient Mesopotamia, where kings' daughters became priestesses who mediated among the various cultures and religions of their fathers' kingdom, and sixteenth-century Mexico, in which alliances between Spanish men and indigenous women variously allowed for consolidation of colonial power or empowered resistance to colonial rule. But family discord has also driven - and been driven by - historical events such as China's 1919 May Fourth Movement, in which young people seeking an end to patriarchal authority were key participants. Maynes's and Waltner's view of the family as a force of history brings to light processes of human development and patterns of social life and allows for new insights into the human past and present.

    Abstract: Dans la France du dix-neuvième siècle, l’institution familiale se trouve dans une phase de transition historique, et dans une position à la fois triomphale et contestée. Avec l’avènement de la classe et des valeurs bourgeoises portées par la Révolution se répand le modèle domestique bourgeois ; les familles de type nobiliaire ou paysan, enracinées dans une terre et une tradition, prises dans un réseau de relations lignagères et communautaires, et placées sous l’autorité du père, reculent devant le ménage mobile, autonome, rassemblé par l’amour autour de la mère et des enfants, qui caractérise notre civilisation industrielle et urbaine. Ce livre interroge la façon dont les intellectuels du dix-neuvième siècle ont pensé la mutation de la famille, considérée dans son rôle de médiateur entre l’individuel et le social. La première partie fait le point sur l’état de l’institution dans l’avant-dernier siècle, telle que nous pouvons la penser aujourd’hui. La famille est appréhendée en tant que maisonnée dans l’espace, et lignée dans le temps ; dans le jeu de ses alliances et l’enchaînement de ses filiations ; dans ses fonctions sexuelle, économique, autoritaire et, de plus en plus, sentimentale ; sans oublier les infractions qui tout ensemble contestent et confirment ses règles. La deuxième partie examine comment, de la Révolution à l’aube de la Troisième République, la famille a suscité chez les penseurs différents types de discours : des formules conservatrices qui se réclament du nom du Père et de la Tradition, patriarcalisme et phallocentrisme ; en antithèse, des formules de contestation qui opposent à la famille un utopisme totalitaire (focalisé sur la Cité), libertaire (recentré sur le moi) ou féministe (défenseur du sexe opprimé) ; enfin, des formules « progressistes » qui affirment les droits de l’individu, du citoyen et du coeur, paternalisme éclairé, réformisme libéral, et familialisme romantique. Une telle étude apparaît d’autant plus opportune aujourd’hui que, un peu comme dans les décennies postrévolutionnaires, la famille est en pleine redéfinition, et se pense volontiers sur le mode de la crise.

    Abstract: This is an innovative study of middle-class behaviour and property relations in English towns in Georgian and Victorian Britain. Through the lens of wills, family papers, property deeds, account books and letters, the author offers a reading of the ways in which middle-class families survived and surmounted the economic difficulties of early industrial society. He argues that these were essentially 'networked' families created and affirmed by a 'gift' network of material goods, finance, services and support, with property very much at the centre of middle-class survival strategies. His approach combines microhistorical studies of individual families with a broader analysis of the national and even international networks within which these families operated. The result is a significant contribution to the history, and to debates about the place of structural and cultural analysis in historical understanding

    Abstract: The history of welfare provision has generally focused on the rise of the so-called welfare state and institutional provision for the poor. Recent studies have begun to look beyond the state to other ways in which assistance, care, and support were provided in the past, but the focus remains primarily on the poor. This work widens our understanding of welfare by focusing not on the poor but on those who have some wealth. It draws attention to the importance of family as part of a mixed economy of welfare provision that also incorporates the state, the market, and the voluntary sector.     Abstract: The family is a topical issue for studies of the Ancient world. Family, household and kinship have different connotations in antiquity from their modern ones. This volume expands that discussion to investigate the early Christian family structures within the larger Graeco-Roman context. Particular emphasis is given to how family metaphors, such as 'brotherhood' function to describe relations in early Christian communities. Asceticism and the rejection of sexuality are considered in the context of Christian constructions of the family. Moxnes' volume presents a comprehensive and timely addition to the study of familial and social structures in the Early Christian world, which will certainly stimulate further debate.

    Abstract: The Family in Late Antiquity offers a challenging, well-argued and coherent study of the family in the late Roman world and the influence of the emerging Christian religion on its structure and value. Before the Roman Empire's political disintegration in the west, enormous political, religious and cultural changes took place in the period of late antiquity. This book is the first comprehensive study of the family in the later Roman Empire, from approximately 300 AD to 550 AD. Geoffrey Nathan analyses the classical Roman family as well as early Christian notions of this most basic unit of social organisation. Using these models as a contextual backdrop, he then explores marriage, children, domestic servitude, and other familial institutions in late antiquity. He brings together a diverse collection of sources, transcending traditional studies that have centred on the legal record.

    Abstract: This book is a quantitative study into the influence of the process of industrialisation on the nature and strength of family relationships in a Dutch community between 1850 and 1920. The study makes use of the unique and unusually rich source of Dutch population registers, which enables the author to trace the history of individual households. The study closely relates aspects of family and household with the social processes characteristic of an industrialising society, such as increasing rates of social and geographical mobility and the shift of production from the home into the factory. Results reveal a striking continuity in the strength of nineteenth-century family relations despite the gradual but profound process of social change surrounding these families. Changes in behavioural patterns did occur, however, under the influence of changes in demographic rates, regional geographical mobility systems and local developments in the housing market. Nevertheless, these changes cannot be taken as a weakening of family relationships.

The essays presented in this 1991 book explore the relationship between the historical experiences of social relations and the demands and opportunities offered by the economy in early modern Europe through a focus on the strategies of labouring families. Critical discussion of the historian's use of sources characterises the essays, which provide case-studies of social groups in north-central Italy and the French Alps. They relate to three specific themes: the exploitation of non-agricultural resources in the countryside, urban guilds and charitable provision.

The dramatic changes that affected the political and economic autonomy of indigenous people in the region also had significant effects on domestic life. This book, originally published in 1989, examines the ways in which this happened. Using the insights of history and anthropology, chapters cover a wide range of geographical range, extending from Hawaii to Australia. The authors examine changes in medicine and health, religious beliefs, architecture and settlement, and the restructuring of the domestic realm. The book raises issues of concern to a wide range of interests: the peoples and history of the Pacific, the broader questions of colonialism and missionary endeavour, and the changing structure of the family.
