This transparency is examined from the perspective of architecture, drawing on arguments from philosophy, quantum mechanics, theology and information theory. For example, the Marawah Island excavations have added a new facet to our understanding of the Neolithic period by revealing intriguing and hitherto unknown funerary rituals. Excavations in Al Ain in the emirate of Abu Dhabi continue to reveal extraordinary evidence of emgt falaj emgirrigation, stretching back 3000 years. The ubiquity of this system across this oasis city further validates its status as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Of particular importance is the discovery of extensive remains from the Late Pre-Islamic period, a significant time in history that has been best revealed in the excavations at Mleiha in the emirate of Sharjah.The research presented here was conducted by specialists from across the world working alongside an ever-growing cadre of Emirati archaeologists who will take the lead in the coming years in revealing more of this country’s extraordinary archaeology and history

    Abstract: Edited by Martin Biddle with a catalogue of the known coins of the mint by Yvonne Harvey, this volume records and illustrates the minting of silver pennies in Winchester between the reigns of Alfred the Great and Henry III, a period of three and a half centuries. At the Mint, which was situated in the area of the High Street to the east of where the city’s cross now stands, at least 24 million silver pennies (possibly as many as 50 million) were struck. Five and a half thousand survive in museums and collections all over the world. These have been sought out and photographed (some 3200 coins in 6400 images detailing both sides), and minutely catalogued by Yvonne Harvey for this volume. 〈br〉〈br〉 During the period from late in the reign of Alfred to the time of Henry III, dies for striking the coins were produced centrally under royal authority in the most sophisticated system of monetary control at the time in the western world. In this first account of a major English mint to have been made in forty years, a team of leading authorities have studied and analysed the use the Winchester moneyers made of the dies, and together with the size, weight, and the surviving number of coins from each pair of dies, have produced a detailed account of the varying fortunes of the mint over this period. Their results are critical for the economic history of England and the changing status of Winchester over this long period, and provide the richest available source for the history of the name of the city and the personal names of its citizens in the later Anglo-Saxon period

    Abstract: This study examines the ‘travel’ of political concepts between women's movements in the West around 1900 and argues that for the historical analysis of social movements, regardless of whether they were transnationally active or not, the exploration of the transfer practices that create spaces of exchange across linguistic and other borders is of eminent importance.     Abstract: Diese Studie untersucht die ‚Reisen‘ politischer Konzepte zwischen Frauenbewegungen des Westens um 1900 und postuliert, dass für die historische Analyse sozialer Bewegungen, unabhängig davon, ob diese transnational aktiv waren oder nicht, die Auseinandersetzung mit Transferpraktiken, die Räume des Austauschs über sprachliche und andere Grenzen hinweg schaffen, von eminenter Bedeutung ist. Anhand einer biografischen Fallstudie zur deutschen Feministin Käthe Schirmacher werden politische Reisetätigkeit, transnationaler Journalismus und Übersetzung als einflußreiche aber häufig wenig sichtbare Formen des Transfers in und zwischen sozialen und politischen Bewegungen thematisiert. This chapter explores the experiences and imaginaries of the UK border among migrants who have crossed the UK border, as well as those who intend to make the journey. We explore the contrast between the expectations and realities of UK borders through in-depth interviews with Vietnamese migrants. We argue, notwithstanding knowledge of the risks involved in border crossings and the hostile border enforcement regime, imaginations of opportunities for transforming local livelihoods remain powerful and deep-seated political and cultural narratives for Vietnamese migrants

    Abstract: The Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1690 became the first government in the Western world to print paper money, the imagery for which initiated an indigenous American art form of remarkable dynamism and originality. After the Revolutionary War, disillusioned by how quickly its promiscuous printing of Continental currency had led to hyperinflation, the U.S. government left it to private institutions such as state-chartered banks to carry on this artistic American tradition. Adorned with a vast variety of images, bank notes soon became the fledgling country’s primary currency. With pressures of the Civil War, the federal government in 1861 began taking charge of the paper-money supply by creating a national currency; simultaneously, the Confederate States of America was creating a competing self-image, making heavy use of bank-note vignettes. Later, collaboration between government engravers and well-known artists on the 1896 Silver Certificates marked the apex of U.S. government currency design.     Abstract: Since their discovery in 1945, the significance of the texts contained in the thirteen papyrus manuscripts now known as the Nag Hammadi Codices has been fiercely debated. In the history of scholarship, the texts have primarily been analyzed in light of the contexts of their hypothetical Greek originals, which in a majority of cases have been thought to have been authored in the second and third centuries CE in a variety of contexts. The articles in this volume take a different approach. Instead of focusing on hypothetical originals, they ask how the texts may have been used and understood by those who read the Coptic papyrus codices in which the texts have been preserved and take as their point of departure recent research indicating that these manuscripts were produced and used by early Egyptian monastics. It is shown that the reading habits and theological ideas attested historically for Upper Egyptian monasticism in the fourth and fifth centuries resonate well with several of the texts within the Nag Hammadi Codices

Le deuxième moment entre 1950 et 1978 est une longue période de crise de la doctrine traditionnelle que Paul VI tenta en vain d’étouffer. Mais le célibat sacerdotal et la condamnation de l’avortement et de l’homosexualité sont remis en cause. Cette dernière question qui n’émerge que tardivement sera abordée grâce au témoignage exceptionnel d’un prêtre homosexuel et pédophile. La tentative de Jean-Paul II de restaurer la morale sexuelle traditionnelle constitue une troisième phase. Comme chacun le sait, le pape n’a pas ramené les fidèles catholiques au respect des enseignements d’une éthique considérée par eux comme archaïque. Entre la doctrine intransigeante du magistère et des laïcs de plus en plus insoumis, les théologiens ont tenu une position stratégique : ont-ils contribué à renforcer et légitimer l’autorité du pape polonais ou préparé des accommodements tels que le pape François les propose aujourd’hui, voire des changements plus radicaux de la doctrine morale catholique ? Pour l’avenir du catholicisme, dans le monde développé du moins, la question sexuelle tient une place critique. L’Église est-elle capable d’abandonner ses « lois » de morale sexuelle ?

    Abstract: Quels sont les mécanismes qui ont conduit le rejeton d’une famille de financiers « moyens » du Languedoc à devenir, en 1726, le principal ministre du jeune Louis XV ? Les causes à l’origine de cette réussite sont de plusieurs ordres. D’abord, le mouvement d’ensemble de tout un lignage qui plonge ses racines dans la marchandise du Lodévois depuis au moins le xvie siècle. Puis, le passage à la finance – le maniement des deniers du roi – qui s’effectue avec le grand-père du cardinal dans les premières années du xviie et surtout son oncle Pierre-Moïse, trésorier de France au bureau des finances de Montpellier. Ce dernier favorise la montée à Paris du jeune André-Hercule qui embrasse dès lors la carrière ecclésiastique. Les moteurs de l’ascension sont ensuite individuels et reposent sur le jeu des clientèles, avec en particulier le cardinal de Bonsy puis le cardinal de Noailles qui obtient de Louis XIV l’évêché de Fréjus (1698) pour son protégé. Tirant profit de ses appuis à la cour et de son ferme soutien en faveur de la bulle Unigenitus, mais sans complaisance vis-à-vis des jésuites, Fleury est désigné par Louis XIV mourant précepteur du futur Louis XV. Sa proximité avec le petit roi le positionne dès lors en personnalité majeure. Les décès de Dubois puis de Philippe d’Orléans le laissent seul face au duc de Bourbon (1723). Trois ans seulement vont suffire à M. de Fréjus pour éliminer ce rival. L’idée selon laquelle le roi tenait de ses sujets l’autorité qu’il avait sur eux, et non plus de Dieu, a été le grand retournement de la Révolution. Les monarchies constitutionnelles du xixe siècle ont ainsi adopté des rites de substitution : serment devant les chambres représentatives, discours du trône. Au prix d’une compromission avec un gouvernement dont les choix politiques étaient à l’opposé de ses convictions, il a obstinément poursuivi l’accomplissement de ce qu’il considérait comme l’œuvre de sa vie : bâtir un enseignement technique au service du peuple et du pays.     Abstract: This book unpacks and interrogates dominant constructions of mothering, making use of interdisciplinary, ideological and theoretical perspectives to investigate how new rhetorics of mothering can expand the realm of maternal care-givers beyond the biological definitions of motherhood. This diverse collection is at the cutting-edge of rhetoric, feminism, and motherhood studies, and the chapters challenge the confines of biological parenting as heteronormative within the neo-liberal nuclear family. The contributors examine, how despite the diversity of parental relationships, many are excluded by the understanding of mothers biologically tied to their children. The volume seeks to expose the underpinnings of biological primacy and argues that 21st-century families and familial circumstances are ill-served by biological ideology.     Abstract: Mirrors of Salt publishes the proceedings of the First International Congress on the Anthropology of Salt, which took place at the Alexandru Ioan Cuza University in Iasi (Romania). The impact of salt on the development of human communities, from the Neolithic to the present, has generated a huge number of specialized studies. However, scientific research has become so atomized that the primordial importance of the mineral has been lost, creating a need for a holistic, comprehensive vision of the dimensions generated by salt. This can only be achieved through anthropology. The anthropology of salt encompasses the entirety of human behavior, i.e. cognitive, spiritual, pragmatic, and social reactions to salt, and provides a holistic view of its role in the evolution of human communities. The anthropology of salt thus brings salt studies from an ancillary position to an autonomous discipline. The papers in this volume are organized into six sections: theory, archaeology, history, ethnography/ ethnoarchaeology/ethnohistory, linguistics, and literature. Topics include salt in Greek and Roman antiquity, as well as from Cameroon, Georgia, Ireland, Italy, Mexico, Moldova, Mongolia, Nigeria, Peru, Romania, Spain, Sudan, Syria, Ukraine, the USA and Venezuela.
