    Kurzfassung: This essay argues that the phenomenon of repeat viewing of films by Bollywood audiences is worthy of being treated as an unusual cultural practice in which repetition and difference support and reinforce each other in the manner suggested by Gilles Deleuze. This relationship is particularly enabled by the relationship of music to plot in these films, in which song sequences provide a repetitive or percussive element that deepens the melodic and innovative element provided by the story. Not all films are able to attract repeat viewers, which raises a question about the role of the “formula” in the Hindi film industry. Further, the pleasures of repetition in this domain offer a suggestive perspective on India’s larger political dilemma, which is to combine the repetition of Western modernity with the unique developmental signature of Indian culture.

    Kurzfassung: Introduction: Primarily aimed at undergraduates studying history, media studies, or cultural studies, this term-long nine-week unit explores the changing and complex relationships between the media and everyday life from the eighteenth to the twentieth century. Rather than focusing simply on the history of media industries, institutions, or texts, the unit examines a range of ways in which media shape--and are shaped by--everyday life as they are put to use in a range of historical and national contexts. Carefully avoiding technological determinism, it is designed to enable students to understand the role of different media in the experience of modernity, from the sights and sounds of the nineteenth-century city to the rhythms and practices of the interwar home. The unit is organized around a series of key themes to enable students to develop more in-depth knowledge of a series of issues such as media and the senses; the media and everyday life in interwar Britain; and the media and consumer culture. Questions of identity are highlighted through an examination of issues such as gender, nation, and age. The unit offers opportunities for students to consolidate their own learning, analyze primary sources, and use audiovisual resources to enhance their directed learning

    Kurzfassung: Introduction : Modernity has involved profound changes to human bodies. As a subject, the body has been central to developments in legal regulation, political debate, medical interventions, scientific understanding, personal experience, cultural representation, and social interaction. This course gives students the opportunity to critically explore some of the many ways in which changes relating to the body were tied to the Enlightenment era and the emergence of modernity. Themes to be addressed include identity and nationhood; health and disability; selfhood and psychology; sex and reproduction; science and art; display and embodiment; and race and gender. Our pursuit of these themes will focus on what historians have identified as a key period for change, 1650 to 1850. To reflect the distinctly interdisciplinary character of historical research on the body, we will use a variety of approaches and materials in this course that includes studying museum objects, reading literary sources, reviewing legal records, analyzing visual material, and more

Engaging with debates about the separation and gendering of public and private spheres, the unit examines how ideas of home are the products of distinctive historical contexts and transformations. It explores how specific values and meanings have been mapped on to public and private spheres and structured everyday life and shaped identities. The unit pays particular attention to how domestic cultures are gendered and classed, and how they need to be understood within--and contribute to--wider power relations and inequalities. The lessons also question whether public and private can simply be understood as distinct and bounded spheres. The unit encourages students to analyze primary sources to understand how the meaning of home is created across a range of cultural forms and practices such as domestic advice literature and cookbooks, art, radio and television programming, and women's magazines

    Kurzfassung: APPROVED ; Abstract Introduction: Temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) are caused by changes in the structure and/or function of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), masticatory muscles, and/or osseous components, which develop secondary to non-inflammatory (e.g.: myalgia) or inflammatory-based conditions (e.g.: rheumatoid arthritis (RA)). TMDs are the most common non-dental orofacial pain conditions, with up to 90% of the general population experiencing TMDs during their lifespan. Symptoms include: TMJ pain, dysfunction, and reduced range of motion, all of which can impair mastication. It is hypothesised that masticatory impairments may impact on overall eating and swallowing, with the potential for additional repercussions for physical functioning and emotional well-being. It is also hypothesised that due to inflammatory joint destruction, adults with TMDs associated with RA may experience more severe problems than those with non-inflammatory disorders. However, little is currently known about the epidemiology, nature, impact, or management of TMD-related eating and swallowing problems. Research Aims: To investigate the epidemiology, nature, impact, and management of TMD-related eating and swallowing problems in adults with non-inflammatory and inflammatory-based conditions. Materials and Methods: Ethical approval was granted for all studies. The epidemiology, nature, and impact of TMD-related eating and swallowing problems was initially investigated via systematic reviews, with subsequent conduct of cross-sectional prospective studies of treatment-seeking patients presenting to national specialist centres of care. Patient data was gathered using both validated tools and new cohort-specific assessment protocols developed here. In addition, perspectives on the management of TMD-related eating and swallowing problems were investigated via surveying the views of both professionals and patients, with development of novel educational resources to address reported needs. Descriptive and statistical techniques were used in analysis. Results: Masticatory difficulties were common (89%), resulting in subsequent swallowing difficulties (53%), choking experiences (45%), and strangling sensations on swallowing (48%). Patients with RA reported higher rates of swallowing difficulties, although the sample size for this group was limited. Eating and swallowing problems moderately impacted on the completion of family, social, and recreational activities, with additional emotional impact, regardless of TMD aetiology. Professionals reported limited awareness of, or clinical experience with, these problems, with 34% viewing them as insignificant, and 47.5% reporting dissatisfaction with and negative perceptions of typical care delivered to this group. Professional and patient concerns related to the lack of evidence-based guidelines, resources, information sharing, or MDT interaction to support service delivery in this field. Discussion and Conclusion: This research highlighted: 1) the range of eating and swallowing problems reported by adults with TMDs; 2) the impact which these problems have on physical functioning and emotional well-being; 3) the status of clinical practice in this field, and 4) the resultant dissatisfaction of both surveyed patients and professionals with current care provision. Recommendation for future clinical practice and research include: the refinement of assessments and educational tools developed here, and the recruitment of larger and more diverse cohorts of patients and professionals in future epidemiological and interventionist research on TMD-related eating and swallowing problems.

    Kurzfassung: Społeczeństwa w krajach uprzemysłowionych doświadczyły w ostatnim wieku dużych zmian w strukturze demograficznej. Z jednej strony nastąpił wzrost przeżywalności wśród osób z wyższych przedziałów wiekowych, z drugiej zmniejszyła się liczba urodzeń. W efekcie populacje krajów rozwiniętych stały się zauważalnie starsze. Jednocześnie poprawa wskaźników demograficznych związanych ze śmiertelnością jest większa niż prognozowano. To niedoszacowanie stanowi poważne wyzwanie dla podmiotów wypłacających świadczenia uzależnione od długości życia ubezpieczonego. Ryzyko niewłaściwego oszacowania przyszłych trendów demograficznych jest ściśle powiązane z ryzykiem długowieczności. Ryzyko, że grupa osób będzie żyć dłużej lub krócej, niż oczekiwano, może być przeniesione na inne podmioty w tradycyjny sposób, w oparciu o reasekurację. Jednak rynek reasekuracji ma zbyt małą pojemność i płynność, by w pełni sprostać rosnącym potrzebom. W tej sytuacji ważną rolę mogą odegrać rynki kapitałowe, które dysponują zarówno wystarczającą pojemnością, jak i płynnością. Do transferu ryzyka długowieczności wykorzystuje się obligacje, instrumenty pochodne (q-forward, s-forward, swapy, opcje), wykupy i zakupy planów emerytalnych oraz sprzedaż niezapadłych polis. Istotnym ograniczeniem dla rozwoju rynku instrumentów transferu ryzyka długowieczności są trudności związane z wyceną ryzyka długowieczności. Instrumentów tych nie da się bowiem zreplikować, co powoduje, że mamy do czynienia z rynkiem niezupełnym. Tym samym nie jest możliwe zastosowanie klasycznych metod wyceny. Wycena instrumentów transferu ryzyka długowieczności jest ściśle powiązana z prognozowaniem przyszłych wskaźników śmiertelności. Celem książki jest charakterystyka ryzyka długowieczności i sposobów jego transferu na rynki kapitałowe oraz zbadanie zależności pomiędzy modelowaniem śmiertelności a wyceną ryzyka długowieczności

Mimo żywego zainteresowania dziełami Platona, Cycerona czy Machiavellego oraz nielicznych prac porównujących przemyślenia starożytnych z opiniami pisarzy renesansowych, ciągle brakuje tego rodzaju opracowania. Mój niedosyt wzbudził dodatkowo fakt, iż twórczość Francesca Guicciardiniego, która jest cennym źródłem informacji dotyczących sytuacji społeczno-politycznej renesansowej Florencji, a poprzez konfrontację z opiniami Machiavellego daje pełniejszy obraz tamtej epoki oraz pozwala lepiej zrozumieć ówczesne tendencje, na gruncie literatury polskiej nie znalazła wystarczającego uznania.     Kurzfassung: La ricerca nel campo dell’epigrafia si arricchisce continuamente con la scoperta di documenti inediti e vive oggi un radicale rinnovamento grazie alle tecnologie digitali. Una componente fondamentale del «mestiere di epigrafista» è però costituita anche dalla ricostruzione filologica e dall’indagine delle figure che si cimentarono nella collazione dei testimoni delle iscrizioni antiche. Il volume comprende sedici saggi di studiosi italiani e francesi, dedicati all’esame della tradizione manoscritta e a stampa dell’epigrafia, che Theodor Mommsen definì la «parte più difficile» della disciplina.     Kurzfassung: In African countries there has been a surge of intellectual interest in foregrounding ideas and thinkers of African origin—in philosophy as in other disciplines—that have been unjustly ignored or marginalized. African scholars have demonstrated that precolonial African cultures generated ideas and arguments which were at once truly philosophical and distinctively African, and several contemporary African thinkers are now established figures in the philosophical mainstream. Yet, despite the universality of its themes, relevant contributions from African philosophy have rarely permeated global philosophical debates. Critical intellectual excavation has also tended to prioritize precolonial thought, overlooking more recent sources of home-grown philosophical thinking such as Africa’s intellectually rich liberation movements. This book demonstrates the potential for constructive interchange between currents of thought from African philosophy and other intellectual currents within philosophy. Chapters authored by leading and emerging scholars: recover philosophical thinkers and currents of ideas within Africa and about Africa, bringing them into dialogue with contemporary mainstream philosophy; foreground the relevance of African theorizing to contemporary debates in epistemology, philosophy of language, moral/political philosophy, philosophy of race, environmental ethics and the metaphysics of disability; make new interventions within on-going debates in African philosophy; consider ways in which philosophy can become epistemically inclusive, interrogating the contemporary call for ‘decolonization’ of philosophy. Showing how foregrounding Africa—its ideas, thinkers and problems—can help with the project of renewing and improving the discipline of philosophy worldwide, this book will stimulate and challenge everyone with an interest in philosophy, and is essential reading for upper-level undergraduate students, postgraduate students and scholars of African and Africana philosophy

    Kurzfassung: Archaeologists tend to rely on scientific methods to reconstruct past histories, an approach that can alienate local indigenous populations and limit the potential of archaeological research. Essays in this volume argue that listening to and learning from local and descendant communities is vital for interpreting the histories and heritage values of archaeological sites. Case studies from around the world demonstrate how a humanistic perspective with people-centric practice decolonizes the discipline by unlocking an intellectual space and collaborative role for indigenous people. These examples show how listening to oral traditions has opened up broader understandings of ancient rituals in Tanzania-where indigenous knowledge paved the way to significant archaeological finds about local iron technology. Archaeologists working with owners of traditional food ovens in Northern Australia discovered the function of mysterious earth mounds nearby, and the involvement of local communities in the interpretation of the Sigiriya World Heritage Site in Sri Lanka led to a better understanding of indigenous values. The ethical implications for positioning archaeology as a way to bridge divisions are also explored. In a case study from Northern Ireland, researchers risked sparking further conflict by listening to competing narratives about the country's political past, and a study of archival records from nineteenth-century grave excavations in British Columbia, where remains were taken without local permission, reveals why indigenous people in the region still regard archaeology with deep suspicion. The value of cultural apprenticeship to those who have long-term relationships with the landscape is nearly forgotten today, contributors argue. This volume points the way to a reawakening of the core principles of anthropology in archaeology and heritage studies.     Kurzfassung: Set in Tanga, a city on the Tanzanian Swahili coast, Dominik Mattes examines the implementation of antiretroviral HIV-treatment (ART) in the area, exploring the manifold infrastructural and social fragilities of treatment provision in public HIV clinics as well as patients’ multi-layered struggles of coming to terms with ART in their everyday lives. Based on extensive ethnographic fieldwork, the book shows that, notwithstanding the massive rollout of ART, providing treatment and living a life with HIV in settings like Tanga continue to entail social, economic, and moral challenges and long-term uncertainties, which contradict the global rhetoric of the “normalization of HIV”

    Kurzfassung: Combining theoretical and empirical discussions with shorter “thick description” case studies, this book offers an anthropological exploration of the emergence in Malaysia of lifestyle bloggers – precursors to current social media “microcelebrities” and “influencers.” It tracks the transformation of personal blogs, which attracted readers with spontaneous and authentic accounts of everyday life, into lifestyle blogs that generate income through advertising and foreground consumerist lifestyles. It argues that lifestyle blogs are dialogically constituted between the blogger, the readers, and the blog itself, and challenges the assumption of a unitary self by proposing that lifestyle blogs can best be understood in terms of the “dividual self.”

    Kurzfassung: In the late nineteenth century, tens of thousands of porters carried ivory every year from the African interior to Bagamoyo, a port town at the Indian Ocean. In the opposite direction, they carried millions of meters of cloth, manufactured in the USA, Europe, and India. This book examines the centrality of the caravan trade, both culturally and economically, to Bagamoyo’s development and cosmopolitan character, while also exploring how this history was silenced when Bagamoyo was instead branded as a slave route town in 2006 in an attempt to qualify it for the UNESCO World Heritage List

Fate Calculation Experts explores how diviners attempt to achieve legitimation in a society which identifies strongly with modernity, science, and rationality. As well as associating with modern knowledge production systems, diviners build a positive social image for their occupation via claims to moral authority and appeals to “tradition”. Beyond matters of image management, diviners’ efforts towards legitimation also figure in the social relationships and fundamental cultural values they develop in their practice
