Abstract: Centuries of intense and involuntary migrations deeply impacted the development of the creolised cultures on the Dutch Caribbean islands of Aruba, Bonaire, and Curaçao. This volume describes various forms of cultural heritage produced on these islands over time and whether these heritages are part of their 'national' identifications. What forms of heritage express the idea of a shared "we" (nation-building) and what images are presented to the outside world (nation-branding)? What cultural heritage is shared between the islands and what are some real or perceived differences? In this book, examples of cultural heritage on these three islands ranging from sports to questions of reparations, from museums to digital humanities, from archaeology to music, from language and literature to tourism, and from visual art to diaspora policies are compared to developments elsewhere in the Caribbean.

Abstract: "Offering a practical guide on How to be an Ethnographer, this book will be a valuable resource for advanced students and early career researchers of organisation studies, anthropology and sociology. It will also be a useful introduction to scholars exploring ethnography as a new research method. This book explores the aims, main methods, and ethical and methodological standards of ethnography. Placing human beings at the centre, it showcases why ethnography is a valuable method of research. Highlighting the importance of ethnographic engagement as a means to learn about different ways of being human, the book employs a range of case studies from researchers at all career stages to provide examples of different methods used in research projects. Going beyond tools and techniques, the authors discuss moral and methodological principles as well as community related modes that are important in conducting ethnography

Abstract: "From start-up entrepreneurs in China's equivalent Silicon Valley to the booming phenomenon of e-commerce rural villages, IT and new internet-based industries are shaping ideas and practices regarding labor and identity in China. Digital entrepreneurship was seen as a way to energize China's slowing economy after the 2008 global financial crisis-but its implementation and practice, while successful in some respects, has also reinforced traditional ideas about state power, gender, and what it means to be Chinese. Lin Zhang argues that these new digital initiatives have simultaneously empowered and exploited digital entrepreneurs and laborers. Through her examination and critique of the new media economy in China, Zhang highlights the historical ruptures, continuities, and contradictions of entrepreneurial labor of self-reinvention in China. In The Labor of Reinvention, Lin Zhang examines digital entrepreneurship in three different areas of Chinese society to provide a multifaceted and ground-level view of how the Chinese are grappling with the new digital economy. She recounts the story of how one U.S.-educated IT entrepreneur's initial application of Google's "people-centric" management style gave way to nationalist discourse to ensure state funding for his crypto-chip startup. Far from Beijing, Zhang considers the mixed success of new ventures in rural areas that combine modern e-commerce with centuries-old practices of familial production. Finally, she discusses a group of internationally mobile upper-class Chinese women whose ability to create a space for themselves in the new digital economy selling luxury goods was curtailed by the patriarchal Chinese state."

Abstract: "Wollstonecraft is best known as the author of A Vindication of the Rights of Woman (1792), the first systematic analysis of the oppression of women, categorically, across history and across cultures. Its vigorous argument for a reform in female education and social valuation was so sensible, so forcefully reasoned, that Virginia Woolf could say in 1929 (just after women gained the vote in England) that its "theories and convictions...are so true that they seem now to contain nothing new in them-their originality has become our commonplace." If Woolf may have spoken too soon (given the culture wars still raging in the 2020s), it is still surprising to learn that this champion for the education of women who was in disdain of amiable social "finishing" and in favor of intellectual, moral, and solidly practical virtues could end up for decades under a cloud of disgrace. Why was this advocate of rational sense, chastity (sexual restraint in the era long before birth control) for men as well as women, for the study of science, history, philosophy, and government (even for school uniforms and physical exercise) as well as the aim of producing responsible wives and mothers, cast as a radical menace and monster, an atheist, a slut, and a pathologically castrating threat to masculine authority? What went wrong? Rising to the complexity and knotty complications of her subject with intellectual verve, A Vindication of the Rights of Woman persists as a work of stimulating international consequence. Wolfson has written a sustained, focused, generalminded account that situates this major work in a decade marked at one end by the French Revolution, and at the other by Napoleon's coup d'état, with reactionary resonance in British letters and national policy. While Wollstonecraft bears strong affinity to other progressive thinkers, she defines her own method, by bringing gendered polemics to the infrastructure of revolutionary politics. Wolfson has spent her career studying Wollstonecraft and her contemporaries, and the resulting book is a pleasure to read"--

Abstract: "Pragmatist thought is central to sociology. However, sociologists typically encounter pragmatism from a distance, through the works of canonical social scientists including George Herbert Mead, Herbert Blumer, Erving Goffman, and W. E. B. DuBois, rather than the philosophers who founded the school of thought, such as Charles S. Peirce, John Dewey, and William James. In The New Pragmatist Sociology, Neil Gross, Isaac Ariail Reed, and Christopher Winship assemble a range of sociologists to address essential ideas in the field and their historical and theoretical connection to classical pragmatism. The book examines questions of methodology, social interaction, and politics across the broad themes of inquiry, agency, and democracy. Essays engage widely and deeply with topics that motivate both pragmatist philosophy and sociology, including rationality, speech, truth, expertise, and methodological pluralism"--

Abstract: A comprehensive study of how slavery and enslaved people shaped the modern world.   A World Transformed explores how slavery thrived at the heart of the entire Western world for more than three centuries. Arguing that slavery can be fully understood only by stepping back from traditional national histories, this book collects the scattered accounts of the latest modern scholarship into a comprehensive history of slavery and its shaping of the world we know. Celebrated historian James Walvin tells a global story that covers everything from the capitalist economy, labor, and the environment, to social culture and ideas of family, beauty, and taste.   This book underscores just how thoroughly slavery is responsible for the making of the modern world. The enforced transportation and labor of millions of Africans became a massive social and economic force, catalyzing the rapid development of multiple new and enormous trading systems with profound global consequences. The labor and products of enslaved people changed the consumption habits of millions--in India and Asia, Europe and Africa, in colonized and Indigenous American societies. Across time, slavery shaped many of the dominant features of Western taste: items and habits or rare and costly luxuries, some of which might seem, at first glance, utterly removed from the horrific reality of slavery. A World Transformed traces the global impacts of slavery over centuries, far beyond legal or historical endpoints, confirming that the world created by slave labor lives on today.

Abstract: "Parasecoli coins and explains the concept of "gastronativism" to help us better understand the ways food has become a powerful ideological tool in political debates, protests, and negotiations. The overarching goal is to demonstrate what gastronativism is, along with the social and political work gastronativism does by means of a wide array of examples from all over the world, with an emphasis on developments during the last decade. Parasecoli describes how globalization and neoliberalism together drive the rise of gastronativism. He also points out that debates around food are rarely about food. The central role of food in everyday life, and its role in determining collective identities, help link it to a much deeper and more complex socio-economic dynamics. How is food used for political purposes? Food offers a unique perspective, because it connects very personal experiences to global systems. Because it is so intimate and emotionally powerful, food is the perfect prism through which to view nativism. Especially after the 2008 financial crisis, food has been used by those who feel they have been excluded or victimized by neoliberal globalization to express fears and resentment generated by changes wrought by globalization. As a reaction, there is among some a desire to go back to one's own food and culinary roots to anchor their identity. Hence gastronativism. This book poses questions about how neoliberal policies set the stage for a range of food movements to embrace local ingredients and encourage heritage recipes. This phenomenon can express itself in local and regional foods, agro-biodiversity, and artisanal know-how. It can support movements for equality, justice, and resistance against transnational corporations. It can also support groups that give local communities choices about what they produce, what they import, and what they consume. Other forms of gastronativism, however, are expressions of nationalist, supremacist, and xenophobic projects that want to maintain or increase inequalities, rendering immigrants, ethnic minorities, and underprivileged people as scapegoats to make up for fears of loss of social prestige, status, and economic well-being. Parasecoli explores both the exclusionary and the non-exclusionary forms of this global trend."

Abstract: What is a social movement? -- Social movements and the task of democracy -- Social movements and the moral life -- Taking imagination seriously -- Language matters -- Justice and the narrative imagination -- The empire of affect and the challenge of collective hope -- Hope and history.
Abstract: "From nineteenth-century abolitionism to Black Lives Matter today, progressive social movements have been at the forefront of social change. Yet it is seldom recognized that such movements have not only engaged in political action but also posed crucial philosophical questions about the meaning of justice and about how the demands of justice can be met. Michele Moody-Adams argues that anyone who is concerned with the theory or the practice of justice-or both-must ask what can be learned from social movements. Drawing on a range of compelling examples, she explores what they have shown about the nature of justice as well as what it takes to create space for justice in the world. Moody-Adams considers progressive social movements as wellsprings of moral inquiry and as agents of social change, drawing out key philosophical and practical principles. Social justice demands humane regard for others, combining compassionate concern and robust respect. Successful movements have drawn on the transformative power of imagination, strengthening the motivation to pursue justice and to create the political institutions and social policies that can sustain it by inspiring political hope. Making Space for Justice contends that the insights arising from social movements are critical to bridging the gap between discerning theory and effective practice-and should be transformative for political thought as well as for political activism"--

Abstract: "We talk a lot about race, yet we rarely focus on the underlying question of what race is and its connections to racism. Conversations about race can be uncomfortable and confusing, but this is resolvable if we ask the right questions and focus on clear answers. What, exactly, is race? Joseph L. Graves and Alan H. Goodman illuminate the idea of race so that people who want to confront the topic of racial injustice can do so with the necessary conceptual tools. Most people think race is real, they argue, and it is. But race is not real in the way that most of us have grown up to think of it. Race is not natural, fixed, or based on biology. Instead, they continue, racism created the idea of race, the idea of race has real effects, and while human genetic variation is biologically real, it is not race. The book is based on evidence from biological and social science. It is composed of twelve question-begging chapters, which engage topics such as the origins of race, race and genetics, the forms of racism, race and health, race and ability, institutional racism, DNA and ancestry testing, "race mixing," race and politics, and what it means to be an antiracist. The book is ideally suited for people want to understand more about what race is, where it came from, and how to confront its pernicious effects, in a format that is clear, direct, and can be used as a model to defend one's antiracist position"--

Abstract: "The links between Buddhism and medicine have lately received much attention in English-language academic, scientific, and popular media alike thanks to the increasing visibility of meditation, but all of these discussions have thus far failed to contextualize these developments within a larger historical framework. In fact, it turns out that the history of Buddhist engagement with various aspects of medicine is as old as the history of Buddhism itself. In all periods and all locations across the world, Buddhism has provided individuals with intellectual tools to frame and understand illness, has shaped health-seeking behaviors in conscious and unconscious ways, and has offered a range of popular therapies and institutional structures for dealing with the sick. This history is complex, involving multiple intertwining threads. Health and illness were common concerns in the earliest Buddhist texts, which drew heavily on existing medical traditions circulating in ancient India. Carried across geographic, cultural, and linguistic boundaries, these ideas and practices became an integral part of the spread of the religion across Asia in the ancient and medieval periods. Transregionally transmitted Buddhist knowledge formed the nucleus for the development of local forms of traditional medicine that still thrive today in many parts of Asia. The dynamics of reception in each of the cultures that received the Buddhist transmission were different and involved complex processes of translation that were always embedded in local social and political contexts. Consequently, particular configurations of Buddhist healing differ markedly from culture to culture. This diversity notwithstanding, certain global patterns have persisted in the history of Buddhist medicine. Many of the key texts in the medical canons of cultures across Asia are attributed to a handful of Buddhist figures. Today, Buddhist traditions, healers, and institutions continue to exert a tangible impact on medical care in societies both inside and outside Asia"--

Abstract: The concept of revolution marks the ultimate horizon of modern politics. It is instantiated by sites of both hope and horror. Within progressive thought, "revolution" often perpetuates entrenched philosophical problems: a teleological philosophy of history, economic reductionism, and normative paternalism. At a time of resurgent uprisings, how can revolution be reconceptualized to grasp the dynamics of social transformation and disentangle revolutionary practice from authoritarian usurpation?Eva von Redecker reconsiders critical theory’s understanding of radical change in order to offer a bold new account of how revolution occurs. She argues that revolutions are not singular events but extended processes: beginning from the interstices of society, they succeed by gradually rearticulating social structures toward a new paradigm. Developing a theoretical account of social transformation, Praxis and Revolution incorporates a wide range of insights, from the Frankfurt School to queer theory and intersectionality. Its revised materialism furnishes prefigurative politics with their social conditions and performative critique with its collective force.Von Redecker revisits the French Revolution to show how change arises from struggle in everyday social practice. She illustrates the argument through rich literary examples—a ménage à trois inside a prison, a radical knitting circle, a queer affinity group, and petitioners pleading with the executioner—that forge a feminist, open-ended model of revolution.Praxis and Revolution urges readers not only to understand revolutions differently but also to situate them elsewhere: in collective contexts that aim to storm manifold Bastilles—but from within

Abstract: "Workers in cultural industries often say that the best part of their job is the opportunity for creativity. At the same time, profit-minded managers at both traditional firms and digital platforms exhort workers to "be creative." Even as cultural fields hold out the prospect of meaningful employment, they are marked by heightened economic precarity. What does it mean to be creative under contemporary capitalism? And how does the ideology of creativity explain workers' commitment to precarious jobs? Michael L. Siciliano draws on nearly two years of ethnographic research as a participant-observer in a Los Angeles music studio and a multichannel YouTube network to explore the contradictions of creative work. He details how such workplaces feature engaging, dynamic processes that enlist workers in organizational projects and secure their affective investment in ideas of creativity and innovation. Siciliano argues that performing creative labor entails a profound ambivalence: workers experience excitement and aesthetic engagement alongside precarity and alienation. Through close comparative analysis, he presents a theory of creative labor that accounts for the roles of embodiment, power, alienation, and technology in the contemporary workplace. Combining vivid ethnographic detail and keen sociological insight, Creative Control explains why "cool" jobs help us understand how workers can participate in their own exploitation"--
