    Abstract: As we approach 2000-2001, the year that will mark the beginning of a new millennium, interest in the meaning of historical transitions is already on the rise. Fervent expectations abound, both positive ones that hope for the emergence of a more perfect form of earthly society, and negative ones that fear the end of the world, either the Armageddon depicted in the Bible or more secular versions of final destruction. Apocalypticism, broadly defined as the belief that God has revealed the imminent end of the ongoing struggle between good and evil throughout history, has been a major element in the three monotheistic Western religions of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. Over the past 30 years, extensive scholarship has been devoted to the study of apocalypticism, not only of its origins in Second Temple Judaism and Early Christianity, but also of the history of Jewish, Christian, and Islamic apocalypticism over the succeeding twenty centuries. The contemporary role of apocalyptic thought, both in America and in the world at large, has also been a subject of intense research. With the contribution of 42 internationally renowned scholars, The Encyclopedia of Apocalypticism provides a state-of-the-art survey of apocalypticism's role in Western history, from its origins down to the eve of the third millennium.

This study sheds new light on the ideological world of urban Zionism, the capitalistic aspects of Zionist culture, and the urban nature of the Zionist project, which sought to create a nation of warriors and farmers, but in fact nationalized the urban space and constructed it as its main public sphere.

    Abstract: Culture is a constant reference in debates surrounding Islam in Europe. Yet the notion of culture is commonly restricted to conceptual frames of multiculturalism where it relates to group identities, collective ways of life and recognition. This volume extends such analysis of culture by approaching it as semiotic practice which conjoins the making of subjects with the configuration of the social. Examining fields such as memory, literature, film, and Islamic art, the studies in this volume explore culture as another element in the assemblage of rationalities governing European Islam. From this perspective, the transformations of European identities can be understood as a matter of cultural practice and politics, which extend the analytical frames of political philosophy, historical legacies, normative orders and social dynamics.

    Abstract: The headscarf is an increasingly contentious symbol in countries across the world. Those who don the headscarf in Germany are referred to as ""integration-refusers."" In Turkey, support by and for headscarf-wearing women allowed a religious party to gain political power in a strictly secular state. A niqab-wearing Muslim woman was denied French citizenship for not conforming to national values.     Abstract: This book responds to the often loud debates about the place of Muslims in Western Europe by proposing an analysis based in institutions, including schools, courts, hospitals, the military, electoral politics, the labor market, and civic education courses. The contributors consider the way people draw on practical schemas regarding others in their midst who are often categorized as Muslims. Chapters based on fieldwork and policy analysis across several countries examine how people interact in their everyday work lives, where they construct moral boundaries, and how they formulate policies concerning tolerable diversity, immigration, discrimination, and political representation. Rather than assuming that each country has its own national ideology that explains such interactions, contributors trace diverse pathways along which institutions complicate or disrupt allegedly consistent national ideologies. These studies shed light on how Muslims encounter particular faces and facets of the state as they go about their lives, seeking help and legitimacy as new citizens of a fast-changing Europe.

    Abstract: Throughout its entire history, the discipline of anthropology has been perceived as undermining, or even discrediting, Christian faith. Many of its most prominent theorists have been agnostics who assumed that ethnographic findings and theories had discredited religious beliefs. E.B. Tylor, the founder of the discipline in Britain, lost his faith through studying anthropology. James Frazer saw the material that he presented in his highly influential work, The Golden Bough, as demonstrating that Christian thought was based on the erroneous thought patterns of 'savages.' On the other hand, some of the most eminent anthropologists have been Christians, including E.E. Evans-Pritchard, Mary Douglas, Victor Turner, and Edith Turner. Moreover, they openly presented articulate reasons for how their religious convictions cohered with their professional work.0Despite being a major site of friction between faith and modern thought, the relationship between anthropology and Christianity has never before been the subject of a book-length study.     Abstract: Long description: A rapid development of religious popular cultures and lifestyles can be observed across the globe. This book provides unique case studies from Asia and Europe illustrating new religious practices, forms of articulation and mass mediatization, all of which render religious traditions significant for contemporary issues and concerns. The essays examine experiences of spirituality in combination with commercialization and expressive performative practices as well as everyday politics of identity. Based on innovative theoretical reflections, the essays take into consideration what the transcultural negotiation of religion, tradition and the popular signifies in different places and social contexts. In doing so, it explores the shifting patterns of the worldviews of Srisailam and its modes of management, representing the ideologically-centered religious values and civic-oriented utilitarian practices. Bringing together the phenomenological and historical study of Srisailam for a comprehensive understanding of both the religious dimension and the historical development of the social organization of the pilgrimage place, this book will be of interest to students of Hinduism, Pilgrimage and South Asian Studies"--
