Abstract: This book clarifies Khomeini’s views on nationalism, sectarianism, and peace and war by putting the Iran-Iraq war at center of understanding of Khomeini’s ideology. Moreover, by making comparisons between Khomeini’s thoughts before and after the revolution with his words during the Iran-Iraq war, this book helps us see how his discourse during the conflict was shaped by such thoughts. Also, such a comparison helps us understand the complexities of Khomeini’s doctrines and their evolvements. Additionally, by offering a unique set of methodological tools, this book introduces a new way to study political leaders in Iran and other parts of the Middle East. Meysam Tyaebipour is a researcher and human right activist. Meysam’s area of interests are the Middle East politics and political ideology.

    Abstract: 1. Introduction -- 2. Theorising the EU as an International Actor -- 3. Development Negotiations -- 4. Trade Negotiations -- 5. Enlargement Negotiations -- 6. Withdrawal Negotiations -- 7. Conclusion.
Abstract: “Magdalena Frennhoff Larsén’s book makes a welcome and significant contribution to the sparse literature on the EU as an international negotiator. It fills a major gap in our understanding of EU negotiation behaviour by examining the interplay between internal and external bargaining games. The four case- studies brilliantly illustrate the intricacies and complexity of external negotiations. The book will serve as a major reference point for students and scholars alike.” —Ole Elgström, Professor emeritus, Lund University, Sweden “This book is an important and pioneering contribution to our understanding of the EU’s global role. Based on high level interviews with negotiators, it combines a compelling qualitative analysis informed empirically from four case-studies with an insightful application of theories. The analysis is theoretically rigorous and the writing style refreshingly articulate and clear. It is highly recommended and an essential addition to all EU Studies library collections.” —Professor Martin Holland, University of Canterbury, New Zealand “The EU in International Negotiations breaks new ground in providing a comprehensive account of the practices of the EU as an international negotiator. In its cogent analysis drawing comparisons and contrasts between negotiations on trade, development, enlargement and withdrawal negotiations undertaken by the EU it deserves to be widely read by scholars of the EU.” —Professor Richard Whitman, University of Kent, UK This book, which is aimed at scholars, practitioners, advanced under-graduate and post-graduate students, seeks to contribute to the understanding of the EU as an international negotiator by analysing a number of external policy areas where the EU to a great extent engages internationally through negotiations, including development, trade, enlargement, and withdrawal. Magdalena Frennhoff Larsén is Senior Lecturer in the School of Social Sciences, University of Westminster, UK. She teaches EU studies, and her research interests are in the areas of EU external relations. She has published articles on the topic in leading journals, including European Comparative Politics, Journal of Common Market Studies, Journal of European Public Policy, Policy and Politics, and International Negotiation.

Abstract: This book explores the development of the gas industry within Latin Europe (France, Italy, Portugal, and Spain). Through charting the growth of this industry during the 19th and 20th centuries, the technology and public policies used are examined to highlight the long term impact of the industry. Utilising a comparative analysis, similarities and variation between the development of gas within the Latin European countries is compared and contrasted with the aid of specific case studies. This book aims to place the development of gas resources in Latin Europe within a global perspective that takes into account the development of energy resources in the rest of Europe and the world more generally. It will be of interest to students and researchers working within energy economics and economic history. Jesús Mirás-Araujo is Professor of Economic History at the University of A Coruña. Andrea Giuntini is Associate Professor of Economic History at the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia. Abstract: "Yavuz and Ozturk have masterfully crafted an outstanding examination of Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu's life, moral values, and political philosophy. Representing the first comprehensive study of the influential figure Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu, who played a pivotal role in shaping the political landscape of modern Turkey in its second century, this book is an essential resource for anyone seeking a profound understanding of the nation.” — Hüsamettin Cindoruk, Former Speaker of the Turkish Parliament “A timely, important, and path-breaking work by two eminent scholars on the man poised to become Turkey’s next president. This volume traces the rise, evolution, and world-view of Kemal Kılıçdarоğlu, whose victory would usher in a new era in Turkish politics.” — Paul Kupicek, Editor, Turkish Studies “With meticulous research and insightful analysis, Yavuz and Ozturk shed light on Kılıçdaroğlu's journey, offering invaluable insights into his beliefs, motivations, and impact on Turkey's trajectory. Their work stands as a testament to the significant contributions made by this transformative figure.” — Michael M. Gunter, Professor of Political Science, Tennessee Technological University This book discusses the life and professional struggle of Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu and the transformation of the CHP under his leadership. It deals with the transformational periods and phases of the CHP, up to the period when Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu became prominent in the party. Furthermore, this book aims to answer the following questions: How and for what reasons did Kılıçdaroğlu decide to ally with the center-right wing in the CHP? What was the collective impact of the center-right wing in positive and negative terms regarding the CHP’s general identity, especially in a historical context? After the 2015 elections, what constituted the shifts and revisions in Kılıçdaroğlu’s ideology and how did they alter the political power of the CHP as a major opposition party? What evidence exists to shed light on his capabilities for building coalitions as a viable option for the possibility of forming a national government in elections? M. Hakan Yavuz is Professor of Political Science at the University of Utah, US. Ahmet Erdi Öztürk is Associate Professor of Politics and International Relations at London Metropolitan University, UK.

Abstract: This book explores the creation and career of the French Constitution of 1795, operative from the start of the Directory until Napoleon’s takeover in 1799. It explores the composition, history and replacement of the French Revolution’s third Constitution through a focus on the speeches and writings of four sets of political voices discernible in late 1790s France. The four main chapters present these voices as Thermidorians, Conservatives, Republicans and Brumairiens. They reveal the intensity and breadth of the debates generated by the permanent tension between the Constitution and the many ongoing conflicts of the Revolution. Set within and beyond the government and the two legislative chambers, the debates feature numerous conflicts central to the French Revolution including the composition and functions of the public powers, the legitimacy of exceptional laws, the regulation of the press and freedom of religion. This sustained focus on the relationship between the political nation and the Constitution provides a fresh reading of the political culture of the Directory. Marcus Ackroyd was educated at the Victoria University of Manchester and Balliol College, Oxford. He has worked as a researcher, translator and writer on a variety of literary, legal and academic projects.

Abstract: The COVID-19 pandemic is an international event whose impact has been acutely felt by almost everyone across the globe. Indeed, currently reading this, it is highly unlikely that your own life has not been significantly impacted by COVID-19. This book offers one of the first analysis of the COVID-19 pandemic and its potential impact from the perspective of International Political Theory. It promises normative interpretation and analysis of the COVID-19 pandemic and to map potential political orders that may emerge in the post-pandemic world. It seeks to give initial insight into how the shockwaves from this event will impact upon our political and international norms. The book focuses on the normative questions of: can emergency powers be used to preserve society from the virus without necessitating a transition to more authoritarian political norms? Will COVID-19 prove a catalyst for Chinese Socialism to challenge, and potentially usurp, liberalism as the dominant international political norm? What changes to liberalism ought to be made as a result of the pandemic? What direction should liberalism take in the post-pandemic world? Abstract: This book offers a unique and timely political analysis of war, international law and human rights, and the important interconnections among them. It questions why war features as a foundational problem in contemporary world affairs and explores how international law is used to manage this and other types of political violence. Challenging conventional thinking that understands war as a problem to be solved and law as an antidote to organized but unruly violence, this book situates the promotion and protection of human rights within the wider context of the modernist project, particularly during the epoch of the Anthropocene. Taking a critical perspective that draws on concepts found in the work of Michel Foucault, Pierre Bourdieu and Bruno Latour, this book casts new light on the ways in which the politics of war, law and rights produces profound insecurities for the human species as well as for other life forms and life systems on this planet. Damien Rogers is Senior Lecturer in Politics and International Relations at Massey University, Auckland. A graduate of four universities, he holds a PhD in Political Science and International Relations from the Australian National University and a PhD in Law from the University of Waikato.

Abstract: “France has been the target of more terrorist attacks than any other Western country. In this major contribution to the burgeoning new field of ‘terrorism studies’, these attacks are subjected to intense social scientific analysis.” – Jolyon Howorth, Harvard University, USA “This timely and important volume presents a compelling analysis of terrorism's impacts and the responses needed to counteract these effects.” – Bruce Hoffman, Georgetown University, USA “Taking a very original perspective, this precious collection investigates the learning and healing processes that followed the Charlie Hebdo’s attacks.” – Donatella della Porta, Scuola Normale Superiore, Italy “This fine, wide-ranging collection on the 2015 Paris attacks takes stock of what we know while charting future directions of research.” – Stéphane Gerson, New York University, USA “By bringing together perspectives from political science, sociology, psychology, and media studies, the editors produce the most complete treatment of a society’s reaction to these horrific events that I have seen.” – Marc J. Hetherington, University of North Carolina Chapel Hill, USA From Charlie Hebdo to the Bataclan, the terrorist attacks perpetrated in Paris in 2015 shocked France and the world. This book offers a unique interdisciplinary approach on the complex responses of French society to these events: from the individual level (survivors of the Bataclan attack, emotional citizens paying homage to the victims, French Muslims) to the meso level of civic association and web communities, and the macro level of the State and public opinion. Religion in our days: Between return, revival and renewal -- A shifting global scenery: The age of re-globalization -- Re-globalization: An array of factors shaking the fundamentals of neoliberal globalization -- Religious re-globalization rhetoric from the United Nations -- The changing European-Western setting: Post-postmodernity and meta-modernity as carriers of a renaissance of values towards “everyday spirituality”?.
Abstract: This book provides a concise introduction into twenty-one trends that are transforming the role of religion and spirituality in “re-globalizing” societies. In referring to processes of “re-globalization”, the book draws attention to profound ongoing changes in the patterns and mechanisms of contemporary globalization. Inter- and transdisciplinary in its approach, clearly structured, and easy to read, the book analyzes the impact of religious self-understanding, rhetoric, and practice on five core fields: economics, politics, culture, demography, and technology. In turn, it describes the effects of these five fields on religion and spirituality themselves. This book represents a broad, encompassing overview of the main transformations that religion is undergoing today. Roland Benedikter combines a “big picture” approach with a keen attention to the details of specific case studies. With its clear and accessible structure and timely examples, this book is ideally suited for students of international relations and religious studies, and will also appeal to researchers engaged in those fields and to interested general readers. The book is also apt to serve as an encompassing basis for contemporary debates in civil society, including both grassroots and expert discussions. Abstract: This book provides a comprehensive approach of the media, journalism and politics in Sub-Saharan Francophone Africa. The author argues that there are common features that the media and journalism share in the seventeen countries of Francophone Africa and these make the local media systems different from what they are in neighboring English-speaking African countries, and in the rest of the world. The approach of the media in French-speaking Africa has not only to be “de-Westernized”, but also to step out of general overviews considering “African media." This project shows the historical, political, economic and sociological characteristics of the media systems of seventeen French-speaking countries of Africa. Abstract: ‘Politics of Violence and Fear in MENA: The Case of Egypt’ explores the state-orchestrated violence in Egypt, Syria, and Turkey justified by vaguely defined terrorist threats. It analyses the “wars on terror” as cases of lengthy securitisation processes that reinforced and legitimised autocratic practices of oppression in each country. Paying particular attention to Egypt’s “war on terror” that began 1981, the book looks into how and with what implications such securitisation processes are upheld throughout lengthy periods of time. Reworking the traditional securitisation theory, this book offers a novel securitisation model (the TER-model) that addresses the questions of securitisation durability and is applicable in non-liberal empirical contexts. The monograph is ideal for graduate students, researchers and policy makers in the fields of political science, International Relations, and Middle Eastern Studies. Helena Reimer-Burgrova is an independent researcher and author. She is a former associate researcher at the Institute for International Relations in Prague (CZ). She studied in Pilsen (CZ), Amman (JO), Cambridge (UK), and Munich (GE), where she earned her PhD at the Institute of Political Science at Bundeswehr University Munich.

Abstract: “The Programmatic Action Framework (PAF) is the newcomer in the pluralistic set of the theories of the policy process." -Giliberto Capano, Professor of Political Science and Public Policy, University of Bologna, Italy “The book presents empirical cross-country evidence for the PAF's idea that overlapping biographies of policy actors and resulting social identities often drive collective action.” -Tanya Heikkila, Professor of Public Affairs, University of Colorado Denver, USA “This work advances knowledge of programmatic actors comparatively.” -Michael Howlett, Burnaby Mountain Professor, Simon Fraser University, Canada “Johanna Hornung shows that policy change is irrevocably linked to the programmatic group, framed by two specific institutions - the recruitment processes and career paths of administrative actors.” -Sabine Saurugger, Professor of Political Science, Science Po Grenoble, France. This open access book is the first monograph to systematically apply the Programmatic Action Framework (PAF) in a comparative analysis of public policy in two institutionally different countries. The PAF seeks to explain long-term policy change by examining the shared biographies of policy actors who, to foster their careers, coalesce around policy programs which they promote throughout the policy process. Comparing health policy-making in France and Germany between 1990 and 2020, the book sheds light on the institutional settings that are necessary for programmatic action to occur. It will appeal to scholars and students of public policy, public administration, and health policy. Johanna Hornung is a Research Associate at the Institute of Comparative Politics and Public Policy, TU Braunschweig, Germany.

Abstract: “This book is essential reading. Against the backdrop of a 15-year democratic recession, the question of why some countries become more democratic while others see growing authoritarianism is one of the most pressing of our era. This inspired volume cleverly leverages a comparative approach to provide new insights into the sources of democratisation and backsliding, making an important and timely contribution.” —Nic Cheeseman, Professor of Democracy, University of Birmingham, UK “This book is a delightful guide and a remarkable must-read for all those concerned with the decline of liberal democracies. This new book by a group of scholars dealing with the topic for quite a time is both a follow-up to their past tales about democracies across cultures and continents and a brand-new approach to its contemporary problems. The theoretical arguments are backed by convincingly constructed comparative country case-studies. It is accessible and fascinating. This book will be widely read by students, social scientists, policymakers, and—I hope—politicians.” —Radoslaw Markowski, Professor of Political Science, Polish Academy of Sciences, Poland“ This book identifies the main factors shaping the fortunes of democracy globally. Why do some democracies in the same region and presumably subject to similar global influences remain stable while others regress? This is the question guiding all the authors of this edited book. In the search for answers, they examine 16 democracies in paired and tripled comparisons in sub-Saharan Africa, North and Latin America, East Asia, Western and Central Europe, along with two polar cases. Insights from the perspectives of history, political science, economics and international relations are offered along with a sketch of possible future scenarios. Combining approaches anchored in the analytical tradition with empirical case studies and given the broad range of topics, this book is bound to be of interest not only to students and practitioners of democracy but also to the broader academic and general readership. Abstract: This book explores the foreign and security policies of Germany, France and the UK vis-à-vis China. Despite the progress made by the Lisbon Treaty and notwithstanding the first EU Global Strategy, the European Union does not have a strategy to address the rise of China. Since this strategic deficit does not automatically reflect the level of EU member states, this book argues that the vacuum at EU level provides member states with an opportunity to fill this gap. By assuming that an increase in national policies on China would eventually lead to a comprehensive European strategy for China, the author focuses on the three biggest European countries and looks at the rise of China to understand the development of the EU's Common Foreign and Security Policy vis-à-vis the PRC. While the CFSP depends on the contribution of EU member states, their role in shaping the CFSP towards China has not been researched yet, and this book fills the gap. Abstract: This book offers a nuanced, insightful and multi-disciplinary analysis of Russia’s war against Ukraine and EU’s position vis-à-vis this war. It is both an excellent book on the war specifically and EU foreign policy more generally. The book is, indeed, a must-read for now, but also a must-keep for the future. - Gustav Schaldemose, Head of Security Unit, The Prime Minister's Office, Denmark This book offers an accessible and rigorous introduction to the context, diplomacy, and law of the European Union’s response to Russia's 2022 invasion of Ukraine. The book explores how the EU responded to the war in the initial months, and is based on research carried out on Russian and European political, diplomatic, and legal texts. Presenting a unique interdisciplinary perspective, the book delves into topics such as the EU diplomatic response, the Ukrainian application for membership of the EU, the policy and legal aspects of EU sanctions against Russia and Belarus. Additionally, the book examines the significance of the EU’s unprecedented political response for the constitutional structure of the EU, and for the strategy toward the Russia of the future. Abstract: This textbook offers an interpretive overview of the history of the Latin American region since the mid-eighteenth century. Its central focus is the struggle of ordinary folks to control their daily lives. It examines the social, economic, and political institutions Latin Americans built and rebuilt, such as families, governments (from village to national levels), churches, political parties, labor unions, schools, and armies, through the lives of the people forged them. It explores the texture of everyday life. Mark Wasserman taught Latin American History at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, USA, for forty years. He is the author of four books on Mexico and two bestselling textbooks on Latin American History. He has won several major fellowships and awards for his scholarship. Covering the sweep of Latin American history from the perspective of the everyday experiences of the people who made it, Modern Latin America, tells the story of the forces that shaped the region and how people from various walks of life negotiated the changing dynamics of race, class, gender, political conflict and power to create the societies of today. Integrating current scholarship, the book covers the major themes and events of Latin American history while breaking away from a dry history of states and institutions to provide a window on the dynamics of how people shaped, were impacted by, and lived their history. Paul Hart, Professor of History and Director of the Center for International Studies, Texas State University, USA Modern Latin America: Everyday Life and Politics 1800 to the Present is an engaging account that effectively weaves the economic, cultural, social, and political histories of the region. Wasserman has a keen eye, recognizing the challenges that Latin America’s diverse populations have confronted over the centuries. “Nature’s Way,” one of the special features in each chapter, is a welcome addition at a time when disease and climate change surround us. Abstract: This edited book takes an interdisciplinary approach to shed light on the complex dynamics involved in the incidence of online hate speech against migrants in user-generated contexts. The authors draw on case studies from Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Poland and the UK, bringing together qualitative and quantitative analyses on user-generated online comments. The authors argue that online hate speech against migrants must be understood as a symptom of a representation crisis on migration, which can only be fully perceived through the study of the complex linguistic, interactional and connective processes within which it emerges. They focus on representations and shared meanings, community building and otherness, and delve into the role of network ecosystems in the process of the construction of public problems. This book will be of interest to undergraduate and post-graduate students as well as academics working on hate speech and migration studies in a variety of fields, and can also contribute to improving research protocols for automated analyses and detections of online hate speech. Abstract: The chapters contained in this handbook address key issues concerning the aesthetics, ethics, and politics of violence in film and media. In addition to providing analyses of representations of violence, they also critically discuss the phenomenology of the spectator, images of atrocity in international cinema, affect and documentary, violent video games, digital infrastructures, cruelty in art cinema, and media and state violence, among many other relevant topics. The Palgrave Handbook of Violence in Film and Media updates existing studies dealing with media and violence while vastly expanding the scope of the field. Representations of violence in film and media are ubiquitous but remain relatively understudied. Too often they are relegated to questions of morality, taste, or aesthetics while judgments about violence can themselves be subjected to moral judgment. Some may question whether objectionable images are worthy of serious scholarly attention at all. While investigating key examples, the chapters in this handbook consider both popular and academic discourses to understand how representations of violence are interpreted and discussed. They propose new approaches and raise novel questions for how we might critically think about this urgent issue within contemporary culture. Abstract: Introduction -- Financial context -- Visual context -- The merchant princes -- The charlatans -- Financial iconography -- Gender -- The other -- The law -- Dreams and the unconscious -- Conclusion.
Abstract: This book provides a critical analysis of visual images of British and international finance during the nineteenth century. Its focus is on the financiers themselves, contrasting the depiction of the respectable Merchant Princes with the less than perfect charlatans (white-collar criminals) who defrauded investors of millions. The breakdown of trust between financiers and investors that evolved during this period is represented visually in depictions of the emotional response of investors to the uncertain financial climate. Throughout the book a PEARL methodology has been used to critique the images reflecting the impact of any Publisher’s political bias, the Editorial and Artistic techniques used to convey the messages in the images, and the Legal context (especially a concern in countries such as France and Germany where censorship was strict). The book concludes that white-collar criminals were invariably secretly admired in Britain, and rarely severely satirised. Similarly, Merchant Princes were depicted favourably in Britain as members of the ruling elite during the latter half of the century. This is contrasted with the more extreme anti-monopolistic images in the US and the extreme anti-Semitic treatment of Jewish financiers in France and Germany. Henry Sless is currently a Research Associate at Henley Business School at the University of Reading, UK. He received a Master’s in historical cartoons from the University of Kent, UK, and a doctorate in visual images of finance in the Victorian era from the University of Reading.

Abstract: This book analyses the reasons for women’s participation in the various Lebanese and Palestinian militias involved in the Lebanese Civil War (1975-1990). Whilst most existing accounts of the Civil War in Lebanon either overlook the roles and experiences of women entirely or focus on women as victims or peacemakers only, ‘Women and the Lebanese Civil War’ highlights that women were involved as militants (and often also as fighters) in all of the militias partaking in the war. Analysing individual motivations, organisational characteristics, security-related aspects and societal factors, the book explains why women were included as fighters in some of the militias but not in others. Based on extensive fieldwork in Lebanon, the book is the first comprehensive study of female perpetrators and supporters of political violence during the Lebanese Civil War. Beyond the case of Lebanon, it questions widespread assumptions about the roles of women at times of violent conflict and war. Dr Jennifer Philippa Eggert is an academic, NGO researcher and practitioner. Her work focuses on violent conflict, development and migration, with a focus on gender, faith and local actors. She has worked in Europe, the Middle East, South Asia and the USA.

Abstract: This open access collection is devoted to an in-depth, qualitative analysis of practices of cross-national solidarity in response to the current political and social crises, from citizens’ initiatives to networks of cooperation among civil society actors. The book analyses existing informal groups at the grassroots, furthering transnational solidarity in three thematic areas: disability, unemployment and immigration. Contributions assess how civic groups respond to the various crises affecting Europe, especially the economic and refugee crises, presenting new findings from a systematic comparative study conducted in eight European countries (Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Poland, Switzerland, and the UK). The research will be of interest to scholars, students, journalists, policy-makers and activists interested in civil society, social movements, charitable actions, altruism and solidarity, as well as European studies and the socio-economic challenges of current European crises
