Abstract: New digital technologies have fostered much debate about the nature of social relationships, institutions and structures in a new information age. An amorphous and interdisciplinary field of research has emerged, concerning itself with the complexities and contradictions involved in the fundamental shifts and radical transformations which information and communication technologies (ICTs) are purportedly bringing about across cultural, political and economic practices. From cyberselves to cyber communities, from media wars to the digital divide, sociology confronts a new digital landscape. 〈BR〉

Abstract: 'A timely collection of essays by some of the most authoritative researchers and scholars in the field of political communication. The essays combine rigorous research on everything from advertising to reality TV, game shows and social networking with lively and accessible writing, and will be essential reading for students of political communication all over the world.' - Brian McNair, Professor of Journalism & Communication, University of Strathclyde, UK
Abstract: This edited collection examines the changing faces of political communication in contemporary democracy. Based on comparative investigations of recent trends in the Netherlands and Great Britain, the essays provide fresh insights and new empirical evidence into the public representation of media-centred politics, This book explores the changing relationship between politics, the media and citizens. Based on comparative evidence from the UK and the Netherlands it provides new insights into the dynamics of political communication in post-modern democracy, which is characterized by uncertainty about the location of politics and an erosion of grand narratives and political ideologies. The contributions of this volume aim to understand these changes as a two-dimensional process: the horizontal dimension encompasses the shifting power balance between politicians and the media. The vertical dimension explores how new forms of citizenship and the pervasiveness of popular culture alongside new communication technologies are challenging the authority of both established journalism and institutionalized politics. What emerges is a complex picture of politicization and de-politicization, elite dominance and the power of vox populi, mediatisation and effective control of political elites over the public agenda

Abstract: This volume brings together scholars from across Europe to critically examine TV history programming in a period of political, economic and cultural change. They look at links between programming and national identity, consider the representation of minorities, and explore a range of televisual genres and techniques, Televising History: Mediating the Past in Postwar Europe examines the representation of history on television in the context of the immense economic and political changes experienced in Europe in the postwar era, and particularly in the past three decades. It considers how elements of the recent and more distant past have been used and adopted by scholars and media professionals alike. The book shows how, within the broader context of cultural, economic, political and aesthetic change, pan-European developments in broadcasting, and particularly in televisual modes, forms and imperatives, have mediated the way in which the past is represented onscreen. Considering the programming of ten European nations, the contributors also represent a range of disciplines, from sociology and history to film studies and television studies, demonstrating the diversity and richness of this growing interdisciplinary field

Abstract: Analyzing the relationship between digital technologies and society this book explores a wide range of complex social issues emerging in a new digital space. It examines both the vexing dilemmmas with a critical eye as well as prompting readers to think constructively and strategically about exciting possibilities, Revealing, engaging and mapping the contours of emerging digital terrains from a variety of perspectives, this book uncovers the ways in which 'the digital' is encroaching, reformulating and recreating social spaces, even what it means to be social in an increasingly digitally-mediated age. In order to capture the complex dimensions of this digital shift included is a comprehensive range of disciplinary perspectives: politics, sociology, science, philosophy, informatics, public policy, communications and media studies. While many of the authors propose real answers to digital dilemmas, no single map and no single agenda for action emerges from this book. Rather the aim is to explore the properties of digital technologies to discern a range of pathways into our digitally-mediated future. The book examines vexing dilemmas with a critical eye as well as prompting readers to think constructively and strategically about alternative pathways and transformative possibilities for our social futures

Abstract: This book offers a clear introductory overview of the concept of gender. It places gender in its historical contexts and traces its development from the Enlightenment to the present, before moving on to the evolution of the concept of gender from within the various stances of feminist criticism, and recent developments in queer theory and post-feminism. Close analysis of key literary texts, including Frankenstein, Paradise Lost and A Midsummer Night's Dream, shows how specific styles of literature enable reflection on gender
