Abstract: The author argues that the way femininity was defined in the first half of the century blinded employers in the new industries to the suitability of young female labour. This definition of femininity was, however, contested by certain women who argued that it not only denied women the full use of their talents but placed many of them in situations of economic insecurity. This was a particular concern of the Women's Movement in its early decades and their first response was a redefinition of femininity and the promotion of academic education for girls. The author demonstrates that as a result of these efforts, employers in the areas targeted began to see the advantages of employing young women, and young women were persuaded that working outside the home would not endanger their femininity.

Abstract: Plundered Kitchens, Empty Wombs examines the symbolic language of food, fertility, and infertility in a small, mountainous African kingdom to explore more general notions of gender, modernity, and cultural identity. In the Cameroon grassfields, an area of high fertility, women hold a paradoxical fear of infertility. By combining symbolic, political-economic, and historical analyses, Pamela Feldman-Savelsberg traces the way reproductive threat is invoked in struggles over gender and ethnic identities. Women's fears of reproductive disorders, she finds, are an important mode of expression for their worries about much larger issues, such as rural poverty, brought about or exacerbated by political and economic changes in this century. A lively case study of an infertile queen who flees the palace sets the stage for discussions of the ethnographic and historical setting, the symbolism of fertility and infertility, and the development and interaction of cosmopolitan and ethno-gynecologies. The book concludes with an analysis of the links between women's role in human reproduction and the divine king's role in social reproduction, both occurring in the rapidly changing context of a multiethnic African nation. Plundered Kitchens, Empty Wombs underscores the relevance of medical anthropology to other anthropological specializations, as well as to epidemiologists, population specialists, and development planners. It should reach a broad audience in medical anthropology, public health, and women's studies.

Abstract: As a conquest dynasty, Qing China's new Manchu leaders desperately needed to legitimize their rule. To win the approval of China's native elites, they developed an ambitious plan to return Confucianism to civil society. Filial piety, the core Confucian value, would once again be upheld by the state, and laborious and time-consuming mourning rituals, the touchstones of a well-ordered Confucian society, would be observed by officials throughout the empire. In this way, the emperor would be following the ancient dictate that he 'govern all-under-heaven with filial piety'. Norman Kutcher's study of mourning looks beneath the rhetoric to demonstrate how the state - unwilling to make the sacrifices that a genuine commitment to proper mourning demanded - quietly but forcefully undermined, not reinvigorated, the Confucian mourning system. With acute sensitivity to language and its changing meanings, Kutcher sheds light on a wide variety of issues that are of interest to historians of late Imperial China

Abstract: "Experimental film and ethnographic film have long been considered separate, autonomous practices on the margins of mainstream cinema. By exploring the interplay between the two forms, Catherine Russell throws new light on both the avant-garde and visual anthropology. Russell provides detailed analyses of more than thirty-five films and videos from the 1890s to the 1990s and discusses a wide range of film and videomakers, including Georges Méliès, Maya Deren, Peter Kubelka, Ray Birdwhistell, Jean Rouch, Su Friedrich, Bill Viola, Kidlat Tahimik, Margaret Mead, Tracey Moffatt, and Chantal Akerman. Arguing that video enables us to see film differently -- not as a vanishing culture but as bodies inscripted in technology, Russell maps the slow fade from modernism to postmodern practices. Combining cultural critique with aesthetic analysis, she explores the dynamics of historical interruption, recovery, and reevaluation. As disciplinary boundaries dissolve, Russell contends, ethnography is a means of renewing the avant-gardism of 'experimental' film, of mobilizing its play with language and form for historical ends. 'Ethnography' likewise becomes an expansive term in which culture is represented from many different and fragmented perspectives." -- Back cover

Note: Includes bibliographical references (pages 307-310) and index , "When it comes to holidays, some talk about "seeing the world," others about "getting away from it all." These two basic philosophies of travel are elaborated delightfully in Orvar Lofgren's investigation of "elsewhereness" as a human pursuit. Whether we set out in search of a mountainscape that will take our breath away, artifacts of the past to enrich our minds, the purest sand on the most unspoiled beach, or a summer place to know and cherish, we follow inner itineraries as time-honored and various as the routes we take." "Beginning his cultural journey among some eighteenth-century pioneers of tourism, Lofgren takes us on a tour of the Western holiday world and shows how two centuries of "learning to be a tourist" have shaped our own ways of vacationing. From country walks in search of the picturesque to wilderness trekking for more grandiose views, from seasonal campsites and communities on the coasts of New England and Sweden to Mediterranean resorts and rearranged ruins, from Continental spas to Las Vegas megahotels, we see how fashions in destinations have changed through the years, with popular images (written, drawn, painted, and later photographed) teaching the tourist what to look for and how to experience it." , "The means of travel have bred their own expectations and rewards. Faster and more affordable transportation, besides permitting more than a small elite to go "on holiday," has led to the package tour and the globalization of tourism. In one of his most entertaining chapters, Lofgren talks about the ongoing battle that results from travelers' differing values: what is "authentic," and does it matter? What constitutes too much or too little, good or bad, the wrong or the right kind of travel? This battle, he says, is often fought in the ways we relate to other tourists--we mock, admire, emulate, or distance ourselves from them. "In the history of modern tourism one element is striking. The main tourist attraction tends to be ... other tourists."" "Travelers present and future will never see their cruises, treks, resort interludes, ecotours, round-the-world journeys, or trips to the vacation cottage or condo in quite the same way again. All our land-, sea-, and mindscapes will be the richer for Lofgren's insights. Abstract: This volume, part of the Cambridge History of the Native Peoples of the Americas, is the first major survey of research on the indigenous peoples of South America from the earliest peopling of the continent to the present since Julian Steward's Handbook of South American Indians was published half a century ago. Although this volume concentrates on continental South America, peoples in the Caribbean and lower Central America who were linguistically or culturally connected are also discussed. This volume is an 'idea-oriented history', emphasizing the development of general themes instead of presenting every group and society. Indigenous peoples' own stories of the past are used as well as the standard accounts written by outsiders. Research is presented following regional and conceptual frameworks; some chapters overlap or present differing interpretations. The volume's emphasis is on self-perceptions of the indigenous peoples of South America at various times and under differing situations

Abstract: International folkloristics is a worldwide discipline in which scholars study various forms of folklore ranging from myth, folktale, and legend to custom and belief. In this volume, twenty classic essays, beginning with a piece by Jacob Grimm, reveal the evolving theoretical underpinnings of folkloristics from its nineteenth century origins to its academic coming-of-age in the twentieth century.

Abstract: In the early nineteenth century, the profession of American anthropology emerged as European Americans began to make a living by studying the "Indian." Less well known are the AmerIndians who, at that time, were writing and publishing ethnographic accounts of their own people. By bringing to the fore this literature of autoethnography and revealing its role in the forming of anthropology as we know it, this book searches out-and shakes-the foundations of American cultural studies, asserting the importance of the Indian voices to the discipline

Abstract: This book presents a social and cultural history of 'dishonourable people' (unehrliche Leute), an outcast group in early modern Germany. Executioners, skinners, grave-diggers, shepherds, barber-surgeons, millers, linen-weavers, sow-gelders, latrine-cleaners, and bailiffs were among the 'dishonourable' by virtue of their trades. This dishonour was either hereditary, often through several generations, or it arose from ritual pollution whereby honourable citizens could become dishonourable by coming into casual contact with members of the outcast group. The dishonourable milieu of the city of Augsburg from the sixteenth to the eighteenth centuries is reconstructed to show the extent to which dishonour determined the life-chances and self-identity of dishonourable people. The book then investigates how honourable estates interacted with dishonourable people, and how the pollution anxieties of early modern Germans structured social and political relations within honourable society.

Abstract: "Of the many sects that broke from the official Russian Orthodox church in the eighteenth century, one was universally despised. Its members were peasants from the Russian heartland skilled in the arts of animal husbandry who turned their knives on themselves to become "eunuchs for the kingdom of heaven's sake."" "In a feat of historical reconstruction, Laura Engelstein tells the sect's astonishing tale. She describes the horrified reactions to the sect by outsiders, including outraged bureaucrats, physicians, and theologians. More important, she allows the Skoptsy a say in defining the contours of their history and the meaning behind their sacrifice."--Jacket

Abstract: As widespread social transformations have been paralleled by gains in health and life expectancy through public health and other improvements, a variety of other challenges to health have emerged, particularly in lifestyle related, behaviourally mediated changes in rates of chronic disease. Hormones, Health and Behavior looks at the relationship of human biology and human society at the intersection of behavior, hormones and health. There is both scientific interest and practical urgency behind the ideas and findings presented here, as the need for a socio-ecological view of function and well-being has become more apparent. This book documents an emerging understanding of how hormones create linkage between behavior or social life and health. It will inform graduate students and researchers interested in human sciences, human development, anthropology, epidemiology, public environmental and reproductive health.

Abstract: The Libyan Bedouin are Arab people of tribal and nomadic pastoralist backgrounds who have ties to the Libyan Desert. This desert comprises the western part of the Egypt, where it is known as the Western Desert, and the eastern part of Libya. This file on the Libyan Bedouin consists of 14 documents and includes ethnographies which provide rich accounts and varying perspectives of Libyan-Bedouin culture and society. These works include Evans-Pritchard's historical and sociological analysis of the Sansusi Order, Emry's study of power in Bedouin society, Behnke's study of Bedouin political ecology, and Abu-Lughod's studies of gender and poetry. Other studies discuss sociopolitical organization and customary law. Three studies examine more recent changes in Bedouin society as a result of sedentization, intrusion of the state, and economic development

Keywords: Saramacca (Suriname people) ; Saramacca (Surinam people) ; Saramakka ; Saramakka
Abstract: The Saramaka are one of six Maroon (or Bush Negro) groups in Suriname. The Saramaka live in the northern extension of the Amazonian forest along the upper Suriname River and its tributaries, the Gaánlío and the Pikílío, and -- since the 1960s -- along the lower Suriname River in villages constructed by the national government after the flooding of approximately half of tribal territory for a hydroelectric project. This file contains six documents, including five books by the anthropologists Sally and Richard Price. The earliest work is a travelogue-like account of Saramaccan beliefs and practices by the anthropologists Melville and Frances Herskovits, who did their field work in 1928 and 1929. Two of the books by Richard Price are histories based on oral and written accounts and cover the period from the establishment of the plantations in Suriname, in the late 1600s, to the Peace of 1762 (Price, R. 1983) and the following period from 1762 to 1820 (Price, R. 1990). Also included is Richard Price's published dissertation on Saramaccan social structure and organization, Sally Price's work on Saramaccan art and gender relations, and a work the Prices co-authored about Saramaccan folk-telling

Abstract: Arab Canadians are first-generation Christian or Muslim Arabic-speaking immigrants and their descendants who originally came from the Arab world and have roots in Arabic culture. Arab Canadians can be found throughout Canada, although the largest communities are found in major cities, such as Montreal and Toronto. There are five documents in the Arab Canadians file. The two major works cover the immigrant history, assimilation, and acculturation of Arab Canadians in Canada and Lebanese and Syrian Canadians in Nova Scotia. Three shorter articles examine the changes in Lebanese-Canadian households and families, the persistence of traditional customs in an Edmonton, Alberta Druse community, and a Lebanese community in Lac La Biche, Alberta

Keywords: Dogons (African people) ; Dogon ; Dogon
Abstract: The Dogon are a group of people who live primarily in the districts of Bandiagara and Douentza in the western African nation of Mali. Some Dogon reside in Burkina Faso. This file consists of 30 documents, two are in the original French. Most focus geographically on the Mopti Region of Mali from ca. 1935 through 1970. General ethnographic information on the Dogon can be found in Paulme and Griaule for the 1930s, Paulu Marti up to the mid-1950s, and Bouju, ca. 1980s. Nearly half of the works focus on Dogon religion and art. Griaule wrote the classic works on Dogon religious thought and myth, which have been critiqued and defended. Griaule and Dieterlen also carried out a sociological analysis of Dogon religion. More specific religious studies are Dieterlen's studies of the Dogon concept of the soul and the symbolism of Dogon sacrifices. Van Beek has written on witchcraft, religious statues and religious ceremonies. Imperato writes on masked dances, as does Griaule in his general ethnography. Analyses of Dogon art are found in Laude, Flam, and Segy. Verboven provides a sophisticated analysis of Dogon ritual movement and dance. Culture and personality studies are found in Parin et al. and Ganay. Other topics included in the file are games, ethnolinguistics, ethnobotany, food patterns, and marriage patterns

Abstract: The Ndyuka live in the northern extension of the Amazonian rain forest in the Marowijne (Maroni) river basin which is shared by the Republic of Suriname and French Guiana. The heartland of Ndyuka territory is considered to be the lower part of the Tapanahoni River, a tributary of the Marowijne. The Ndyuka are one of six Maroon (or Bush Negro) groups in Suriname. Maroons are the descendants of rebel African slaves who succeeded in building independent communities in the Americas. This file contains 16 documents, which mostly cover topics on religion, law, and cultural change. The major works are Hurault's ethnography of the Boni from the 1940s and 1950s, van Velzen's history of Ndyuka religious movements and cults, Bilby's examination of culture change and identity in five Aluku communities, and Lenoir's work on Paramaccan religion. Other topics covered in this file include Ndyuka manners, possession cults during Suriname's civil war, leadership, witchcraft, law and sanctions, kinship and social organization, resistance and acculturation, classificatory kinship and authority, food cultivation and preparation, and a comparative demographic study of the Boni and Oyana Indians

This volume is an 'idea-oriented history,' emphasizing the development of general themes instead of presenting every group and society.

    Keywords: Dogons (African people)
Abstract: The Dogon are a group of people who live primarily in the districts of Bandiagara and Douentza in the western African nation of Mali.

Abstract: The Bristol doctor James Cowles Prichard (1786-1848) has enjoyed a glowing reputation. Late Victorians regarded him as the founder of British anthropology and, in the twentieth century, he has been considered as a precursor of Darwin. Nowadays his name is cited mainly in context of inquiries into the rise of racial theories. Prichard's own theoretical goal was simple: the son of Quaker parents, he attempted to establish that the Bible provided a correct account of the earliest history of humankind; above all it was his aim to prove once and for all the doctrine of monogenesis: the unitary origins of mankind. He single-handedly charted the waters of the pre-Victorian human sciences. Philology, anthropology, mythology, Biblical criticism, the philosophy of the human mind, comparative anatomy, physiology, and practical medicine - Prichard mastered subjects so diverse that his learning may be called truly universal. His views have often been misrepresented, however, and his opposition to racial thinking in particular has been underestimated. This book, the first study dedicated exclusively to Prichard, explores his notions of man's place in nature and puts them in the context of contemporary European learning

This volume is an 'idea-oriented history,' emphasizing the development of general themes instead of presenting every group and society.

Abstract: Houses are not just assemblages of individual rooms but intricate patterns of organised space, governed by rules and conventions about the size and configuration of rooms, which domestic activities go together, how the interior should be decorated and furnished and what kinds of household object are appropriate in each setting, how family members relate to one another in different spaces, and how and where guests should be received and entertained in the home. Decoding Homes and Houses introduces new, computer-based techniques designed to retrieve and interpret this wealth of social and symbolic information. The various representations and measures show how domestic space provides a shared framework for everyday life, how social meanings are constructed in the home and how different sub-groups within society differentiate themselves through their patterns of domestic space and lifestyles.

Abstract: "Drawing on examples from the US and Mexico, Northern Ireland, Israel and Palestine, Spain and Morocco, as well as various parts of Southeast Asia and Africa, this timely book offers a comparative perspective on culture at state boundaries. The authors examine the role of the state, ethnicity, transnationalism, border symbols, rituals and identity in an effort to understand how nationalism informs attitudes and behaviour at local, national and international levels. Soldiers, customs agents, smugglers, tourists, athletes, shoppers, and prostitutes all provide telling insights into the power relations of every day life and what these relations say about borders." "This overview of the importance of borders to the construction of identity and culture will be an essential text for students and scholars in anthropology, sociology, political science, geography, nationalism and immigration studies."--BOOK JACKET.

Abstract: In a compelling example of the cultural history of South Africa, Robert Ross offers a subtle and wide-ranging study of status and respectability in the colonial Cape between 1750 and 1850. His 1999 book describes the symbolism of dress, emblems, architecture, food, language, and polite conventions, paying particular attention to domestic relationships, gender, education and religion, and analyses the values and the modes of thinking current in different strata of the society. He argues that these cultural factors were related to high political developments in the Cape, and offers a rich account of the changes in social identity that accompanied the transition from Dutch to British overrule, and of the development of white racism and of ideologies of resistance to white domination. The result is a uniquely nuanced account of a colonial society.
