Abstract: Now that PC users have entered the realm of programmable hardware, graphics programmers can create 3D images and animations comparable to those produced by RenderMan's procedural programs-but in real time. Here is a book that will bring this cutting-edge technology to your computer. Beginning with the mathematical basics of vertex and pixel shaders, and building to detailed accounts of programmable shader operations, Real-Time Shader Programming provides the foundation and techniques necessary for replicating popular cinema-style 3D graphics as well as creating your own real-time procedural shaders. A compelling writing style, color illustrations throughout, and scores of online resources make Real-Time Shader Programming an indispensable tutorial/reference for the game developer, graphics programmer, game artist, or visualization programmer, to create countless real-time 3D effects. * Contains a complete reference of the low-level shader language for both DirectX 8 and DirectX 9 * Provides an interactive shader demonstration tool (RenderMonkeyTM) for testing and experimenting * Includes a CD ROM containing all shader examples, source code, and tools, plus the DirectX SDK * Maintains an updated version of the detailed shader reference section at www.directx.com * Teaches the latest shader programming techniques for high-performance real-time 3D graphics

Abstract: Understanding Virtual Reality arrives at a time when the technologies behind virtual reality have advanced to the point that it is possible to develop and deploy meaningful, productive virtual reality applications. The aim of this thorough, accessible exploration is to help you take advantage of this moment, equipping you with the understanding needed to identify and prepare for ways VR can be used in your field, whatever your field may be. By approaching VR as a communications medium, the authors have created a resource that will remain relevant even as the underlying technologies evolve. You get a history of VR, along with a good look at systems currently in use. However, the focus remains squarely on the application of VR and the many issues that arise in the application design and implementation, including hardware requirements, system integration, interaction techniques, and usability. This book also counters both exaggerated claims for VR and the view that would reduce it to entertainment, citing dozens of real-world examples from many different fields and presenting (in a series of appendices) four in-depth application case studies. * Substantive, illuminating coverage designed for technical and business readers and well-suited to the classroom. * Examines VR's constituent technologies, drawn from visualization, representation, graphics, human-computer interaction, and other fields, and explains how they are being united in cohesive VR systems. * Via a companion Web site, provides additional case studies, tutorials, instructional materials, and a link to an open-source VR programming system

Abstract: Publisher description: Amid all of the talk about the digital divide, there is little to point to in the way of effective solutions. Putting computers in classrooms without adequate teacher training, Internet access and courseware doesn't solve anything. School administrators, communications and information technology experts and policymakers need a broader understanding of the issues surrounding the debate in order to formulate policy and implement viable solutions. This book approaches the problem from an historical, political and global perspective. It presents a comprehensive discussion of the problems and provides workable solutions, potential model approaches, and country-by-country analysis. Unique in scope and structure, this work is both a policy guide and reference book, providing solutions and resources that should help build a community of interest and foster the exchange of information and best practices.

Abstract: Designing Collaborative Systems: A Practical Guide to Ethnography introduces a new 'ethnographic' approach that will enable designers to create collaborative and interactive systems, which are employed successfully in real-world settings. This new approach, adapted from the field of social research, considers both the social circumstances and the level and type of human interaction involved, thereby ensuring that future ethnographic systems are as user-friendly and as effective as possible. This book provides the practitioner with an invaluable introduction to this approach, and presents a unique set of practical strategies for incorporating it into the design process. Divided into four distinct sections with practical examples throughout, the book covers: - the requirements problem; - ethnographic practices for describing and analysing cooperative work; - the design process; and - the role of ethnography when evaluating systems supporting cooperative work. "Of the various perspectives that jostle together under the rubric of ethnography, ethnomethodology has often held the most appeal for designers. Yet, surprisingly, there has not been a systematic explication of ethnography and ethnomethodology for the purposes of system design. Andy Crabtree puts this to rights in a comprehensive, informative, and accessible practical guide which will be of great value to not only designers but also the ethnographers who work with them." (Graham Button, Lab. Director, Xerox Research Centre, Europe) "Not only is the book a must for those interested in bringing a social dimension to the system design process, it also makes a significant contribution to ethnomethodology." (Professor John A. Hughes, Lancaster University, UK)

Abstract: This book examines the 'new' areas of telecommunications technology, focusing particularly on fixed data communications (including the internet) and mobile telecommunications (including the mobile internet). A sectoral systems of innovation approach is used as a conceptual framework for the analysis of the telecommunications sector, in terms of equipment, access and content. The authors consider the emergence and expansion of new technologies and explore how the sectoral system of innovation is evolving and how previously independent systems are now converging. In particular, they address the question of equipment production and the provision of intangible service products such as internet access and content. By addressing the production of both goods and services, they highlight the critical interdependence of service innovations and manufacturing innovations. Some of the specific topics discussed within the book include: * the challenges for Europe of fixed data communications * second and third generation mobile telecommunications systems * data communication via satellite and television subsystems * the dynamics and trends of the internet services industry * policy implications for the future of the telecommunications sectoral system of innovation. The book is a comprehensive theoretical, empirical and policy oriented account of the emergence and evolution of the sectoral system of innovation of the internet and mobile telecommunications. It will be an invaluable source of reference for academic researchers and policymakers in the fields of macroeconomics, industrial economics and innovation, as well as consultants and firms operating in the communications industry

Abstract: Can computers change what you think and do? Can they motivate you to stop smoking, persuade you to buy insurance, or convince you to join the Army? "Yes, they can," says Dr. B.J. Fogg, director of the Persuasive Technology Lab at Stanford University. Fogg has coined the phrase "Captology"(an acronym for computers as persuasive technologies) to capture the domain of research, design, and applications of persuasive computers. In this thought-provoking book, based on nine years of research in captology, Dr. Fogg reveals how Web sites, software applications, and mobile devices can be used to change people's attitudes and behavior. Technology designers, marketers, researchers, consumersanyone who wants to leverage or simply understand the persuasive power of interactive technologywill appreciate the compelling insights and illuminating examples found inside. Persuasive technology can be controversialand it should be. Who will wield this power of digital influence? And to what end? Now is the time to survey the issues and explore the principles of persuasive technology, and B.J. Fogg has written this book to be your guide. * Filled with key term definitions in persuasive computing *Provides frameworks for understanding this domain *Describes real examples of persuasive technologies

Abstract: The study of information-based actions and processes has been a vibrant - terface between logic and computer science for several decades now. Indeed, several natural perspectives come together here. On the one hand, logical s- tems may be used to describe the dynamics of arbitrary computational p- cesses – as in the many sophisticated process logics available today. But also, key logical notions such as model checking or proof search are themselves informational processes involving agents with goals. The interplay between these descriptive and dynamic aspects shows even in our ordinary language. A word like “proof” hdenotes both a static ‘certificate’ of truth, and an activity which humans or machines engage in. Increasing our understanding of l- ics of this sort tells us something about computer science, and about cognitive actions in general. The individual chapters of this book show the state of the art in current - vestigations of process calculi such as linear logic, and – with mainly two major paradigms at work, namely, linear logic and modal logic. These techniques are applied to the title themes of concurrency and synchronisation, but there are also many repercussions for topics such as the geometry of proofs, categorial semantics, and logics of graphs. Viewed - gether, the chapters also offer exciting glimpses of future integration, as the reader moves back and forth through the book.
