    Kurzfassung: "Between 1600 and 1750 Ottoman Turkish music differentiated itself from an older Persianate art music and developed the genres antecedent to modern Turkish art music. Based on a translation of Demetrius Cantemir's seminal "Book of the Science of Music" from the early eighteenth century, this work is the first to bring together contemporaneous notations, musical treatises, literary sources, travellers' accounts and iconography. These present a synthetic picture of the emergence of Ottoman composed and improvised instrumental music. A detailed comparison of items in the notated Collections of Cantemir and of Bobowski-from fifty years earlier-together with relevant treatises, reveal key aspects of modality, melodic progression and rhythmic structures

Through a series of Ottoman/Turkish classical vocal music compositions that can be dated to 18th and 19th centuries, Euterpe and related sources reinforce a much broader picture of musical practice and transmission in which we clearly see that the Greek and Turkish traditions are linked.     Kurzfassung: Kurt Reinhard ist einer der bedeutendsten Musikwissenschaftler und Ethnomusikologen, der die Notwendigkeit der transkulturellen Kommunikation frühzeitig erkannte und sich zusammen mit seiner Frau Ursula Reinhard tatkräftig für deren Verwirklichung einsetzte. Beide Leben belegen eindrucksvoll diesen Einsatz. Musikologische Feldforschungen in der Türkei (1955-1993) bildeten die Grundlage einer umfangreichen Sammlung von Quellenmaterialien zur Türkei. Darauf aufbauend entstanden einschlägige systematische und ethnomusikologische Studien, unter anderem zu Musikinstrumenten, zu âşık-Liedern, zur Roma-Musik, zur Geschichte der türkischen Volks- und Kunstmusik. Neben den Grundlagenforschungen und einschlägigen Studien war das Forscher-Ehepaar zugleich bestrebt, den deutsch-türkischen Kulturdialog zu fördern und die transkulturelle Verständigung zu verbessern. Der vorliegende Band bezweckt, das ethnomusikologische Wirken, die Lebensläufe und Bibliographien des Ehepaares Reinhard möglichst umfassend zu dokumentieren und die Verdienste um eine über fünfzigjährige Wirkungs- und Entwicklungsgeschichte, nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg bis zur Jahrhundertwende, im Kontext der Vergleichenden Musikwissenschaft zu würdigen.

    Kurzfassung: Debates on language policy and planning in the Republic of Turkey are the focus of this volume, which is the outcome of a conference held at the University of Freiburg in April 2019. The eight chapters deal with various aspects related to both the official language Turkish and the other languages used in Turkey, whether autochthonous minority languages or languages that have recently become important through migration. For their analyses, the authors, coming from different disciplinary backgrounds like Turkology, political science or history, use methods like discourse analysis, mixed-method approaches or concepts from the field of linguistic landscapes research.Topics include re-evaluations of the Turkish Language Reform of the 1920s and 1930s, analyses of debates concerning the Turkish language in connection with questions of gender, loanwords and use in political speeches, the language on public and private signs, demands raised in connection with the so-called Democratic Opening initiated in 2009 or the migration of refugees from Syria since 2011. Attention to current developments also provides new perspectives on the early phase of language policy in Turkey and the question whether such developments can be seen as continuities or discontinuities. In any case, this book makes an engaging contribution to what seems to be a never-ending story?

    Kurzfassung: "This project is the first book length study of the ney, the Sufi reed flute long associated with Islam and disdained after the establishment of the Turkish Republic. Based on extensive field research and an apprentice-style method of inquiry, the book explores the remarkable revival of ney-playing among urban dwellers in Turkey today: in Istanbul and other urban centers, and in a plethora of new pedagogical sites ranging from private ney studios to cultural and religious associations, from university clubs to local mosque organizations. The author, Banu Şenay, documents the lifelong preparation required to become a skilled practitioner of the ney, examining in particular the transformative power of this Islamic art pedagogy to cultivate new aesthetic and ethical perceptions in learners. Şenay's ethnography shows how the learning process transcends musical technique, entailing not only an embodied, sensory disciplining of the body, but socialization of learners into new ways of being as well as into new ways of relating to other selves.     Kurzfassung: Ethnische Identität erlangt man nicht durch Geburt oder Nationalität, man sucht sie sich aus oder sie wird einem zugeschrieben. Sie ist eine Form von Zugehörigkeit, auf die viele Faktoren Einfluss haben: Geburtsort, Wohnort, Schule, Umgebung, Sprache: Welcher Faktor den Ausschlag für eine Selbst- oder Fremdzuschreibung gibt, ist individuell unterschiedlich. Philip Bracker zeigt, wie ethnische Identität in den Erfahrungen der InformantInnen auftaucht und in welchen Konstellationen sie in der Interaktion zwischen Individuum und sozialer Umgebung hervortritt. Dabei wird besonders die ausgrenzende Wirkung alltagsüblicher Begriffe erkennbar. Es stellt sich heraus, dass ethnisierende Begriffe in vielen Situationen nicht die Realität der InformantInnen widerspiegeln und Zuschreibungen als diskriminierend empfunden werden. Mit den Lebensgeschichten der InformantInnen und ihren Erfahrungen im Rücken argumentiert der Autor dafür, ethnische Identität als wandelbar zu verstehen und Hybriditäten, Teilidentitäten und situations- und altersabhängige Umgestaltungen anzuerkennen.     Kurzfassung: The book describes the confusing, contradictory and individualized musicscape in Turkey around the turn of the twenty-first century, including its prehistory throughout the twentieth century and sometimes beyond. Its focus lies on the recent tendency towards a disintegration of musical traditions into internationalism and multiple musical hybrids which might be described as a process of individualization. The category of individual as used here includes individual musicians, individual music pieces, individual life experiences, identities and approaches to music, individual musical projects, individual CDs and concerts, even individual concepts of music theory, conferences or research projects. Several factors lead to this development: A growing rate and importance of migration and international mobility; the increase of cross-cultural encounters and experiences; the availability of almost all Ottoman-Turkish, Anatolian and global musical styles, instruments and other musical elements via media; the opening up of identity discourses. A final chapter is intended as a reflection on the question of how this unprecedented musical expansion could have happened within an authoritarian state and society such as the Republic of Turkey.

    Kurzfassung: This book offers a range of trajectories of academic thought and musical practice in Turkey. It adopts a multidisciplinary approach, with chapters exploring the question posed by its title from the perspectives of ethnomusicology, historical musicology, neurology, psychology, social science, gender studies, acoustics, and linguistics. Some studies are experimental and scientific in nature, ranging from a friends focus on tonality, using EEG to investigate differences in the cognitive responses of musicians and non-musicians listening to tonal and atonal chords, to an examination of brain activation in response to reverberation time differences resulting from room acoustics. Another essay assesses the psychometric properties and effectiveness of the new Turkish version of the Music Performance Anxiety Inventory for Adolescents (MPAI-A), designed to survey performance anxiety and determine its severity in adolescent musicians. On a completely different tack, two studies investigate Turkey's heavy metal scene. The first explores the social forces propelling the "moral panic" over Satanism and heavy metal, generated by the national press in response to a gory murder in the 1990s. Through field interviews, this study examines the impact of this on the public perception and stereotypes of metal fans, and its effects on the fans themselves. The second contribution examines gender codes within the global extreme metal scene, looking specifically at the barriers faced - and overcome - by female Turkish extreme metal musicians. Setting Turkish music practices today in their historical context, a further contribution offers a critical appraisal of the mission to "contemporize" music, expounded (though ineffectually carried out) by the founding ideologies of Early Republican Turkey.
    Kurzfassung: A similar chapter discusses how even Anatolian folk music, when examined more closely, caused consternation, looking at the change in the Turkish state's attitude towards the multicultural structure of Anatolia during the last decade. The final article in this volume focuses on how Turkish musicians use the term "sound" - the English word, as borrowed in Turkish - to discuss elements of music. Beyond the physical meaning of the word, the essay explores the ways the word is used by musicians to describe the timbre of instruments, the production quality of recordings, the application of music technology, the aural aesthetics of an album, and the distinctive and unique elements of an artist's performance. - Firat Kutluk is a Professor of Musicology, and received his PhD on "Cultural Analysis of Popular Music in Turkey" in 1994. In addition to participating in various conferences, seminars and symposiums, he has presented a series of lectures on "New Music" and "Music and Politics". Between 1991 and 2009, he made a number of music programmes for broadcast, and has published the books Music History (1997) and Music and Politics (1997). He is currently Director of the Graduate School of Fine Arts at Dokuz Eylul University and Principal of DABMER (Acoustic and Cognitive Musicology Research Centre). Ugur Turkmen graduated from Uludag University's Faculty of Education in 1993. He gained a Master's degree from the Department of Music Education of Selcuk University in 1996. In 2005, he received his doctorate from Bolu Abant Izzet Baysal University's Department of Music Education, before becoming an Associate Professor of Musicology in 2010. He is currently the Director of Afyon Kocatepe University State Conservatory.

    Kurzfassung: Music in contemporary Turkey is inextricably linked to the history of the Republic of Turkey and the complex histories of the Ottoman Empire and numerous other empires that preceded it. Their fame and ubiquity have made them national icons -- but, Martin Stokes here contends, they do not represent the official version of Turkish identity propagated by anthems or flags; instead they evoke a much more intimate and ambivalent conception of Turkishness. Using these three singers as a lens, Stokes examines Turkeyʹs repressive politics and civil violence as well as its uncommonly vibrant public life in which music, art, literature, sports, and journalism have flourished. However, Stokesʹs primary concern is how Muren, Gencebay, and Aksuʹs music and careers can be understood in light of theories of cultural intimacy. Uzun zamana yayılmış, köklü Osmanlı musikisinin değişim sürecinin öncesi ve sonrası, İstanbul 2010 Avrupa Kültür Başkenti Ajansı Kültürel Miras ve Müzeler Direktörlüğü projeleri kapsamında hayata geçirilen sergi ve dinletilerle gözler önüne seriliyor bugünlerde. Gönül Paçacı'nın koleksiyonundan derlenen sergi Osmanlı musikisinin derinlemesine incelenerek köklü müzik tarihine adeta ışık tutuyor. Uzun zamandır planlanan müzik müzesine giden yolda da bir adım atılmasına öncülük etmiş, kültürel mirasa ilişkin bilinmeyenlerin bir kısmı daha gün ışığına çıkmış böylelikle.

    Kurzfassung: For over three decades I had the opportunity to research on Ottoman musical writings in the Turkish libraries and to consult private collections. Concurrently, I was able to study Ottoman musical manuscripts kept in libraries outside Turkey. Along those years of research I carried out persistent investigations that gave me access to a large number of Ottoman materials ranging from the fifteenth century to the end of the nineteenth century. As a result of examining numerous musical manuscripts in Ottoman Turkish literature I discerned the commonplace of themes in the majority of writings and evaluated their structure at formal and generative level. Moreover, I was able to ascertain the significant purport of certain sources over others and to compare several versions of the texts. The idea of this catalogue evolved gradually in my mind from the perception that an explicit presentation of the makams would constitute a valuable reference both for evaluating the historical process of creating and performing music, as well as for establishing the inventory of modal categories and their taxonomic relations. As time passed, I was able to determine the development of a genuine Turkish concept in works that provided descriptive and analytical matter, and to detect through manuscript lines the significance of the process involving the semantics of the practice of music at different periods. The present book is mainly focused upon the practical theory of the makams reflected in the production and performance of the melodic scales the way they are described in Ottoman manuscripts.

Since the inaugural broadcast in 1927, the national elite designed radio broadcasting to represent the "voice of a nation." Here Meltem Ahiska reveals how radio broadcasting actually showed Turkey's uncertainty over its position in relation to Europe. While the national elite wanted to build their own Turkish identity, at the same time they desiredrecognition from Europe that Turkey was now a Westernized modern country. Ahiska shows how these tensions played out over the radio in the conflicting depictions and discrepancies between the national elite and "the people," "cosmopolitan" Istanbul and "national" Ankara, and men and women (especially in Radio drama). Through radio broadcasting we can see how Occidentalism dictated the Turkish Republic's early history and shaped how modern Turkey saw itself

    Kurzfassung: Over the last decade, pious Muslims all over the world have gone through contradictory transformations. Though public attention commonly rests on the turn toward violence, this book's stories of transformation to 'moderate Islam' in a previously radical district in Istanbul exemplify another experience. In a shift away from distrust of the state to partial secularization, Islamists in Turkey transitioned through a process of absorption into existing power structures. With rich descriptions of life in the district of Sultanbeyli, this unique work investigates how religious activists organized, how authorities defeated them, and how the emergent pro-state Justice and Development Party incorporated them. As Tugal reveals, the absorption of a radical movement was not simply the foregone conclusion of an inevitable world-historical trend but an outcome of contingent struggles.With a closing comparative look at Egypt and Iran, the book situates the Turkish case in a broad historical context and discusses why Islamic politics have not been similarly integrated into secular capitalism elsewhere.
