Abstract: Introduction -- Chapter 1: An Archaeology of Cosmopolitanism -- Chapter 2: The Multinational World of Ships -- Chapter 3: Nostromo: The Nation, Nation Formation, Cosmopolitanism and Transnationalism -- Chapter 4: The Secret Agent: Transnationalism and Internationalism -- Chapter 5: Under Western Eyes: Internationalism and Nations -- Chapter 6: 'The Polish Problem' and Transnational Activism -- Afterword -- Appendix: A Note on the National Question. .
Abstract: In 1908, Joseph Conrad was criticised by a reviewer for being a man ‘without either country or language’: even his shipboard communities were the product of a ‘cosmopolitan’ vision. This book takes off from that criticism and begins by exploring the history and meanings of the term ‘cosmopolitan’. It then considers the multinational world of Conrad’s ships – and of the Merchant Marine more generally – to differentiate multinationalism from cosmopolitanism. Subsequent chapters then address nationalism, nation-formation and the concept of the nation through a reading of Nostromo; cosmopolitanism and internationalism in The Secret Agent; nationalism, internationalism and transnational activism in relation to Under Westen Eyes; and Conrad’s own transnational activism in his later essays. While drawing distinctions between cosmopolitanism, internationalism and transnationalism as the appropriate conceptual framings for Conrad’s works, this book traces Conrad’s own engagement with nationalism, cosmopolitanism, and transnational activism in relation to the political events of his time. Robert Hampson is Professor Emeritus at Royal Holloway, University of London; Research Fellow at the Institute of English Studies, University of London; and Chair of the Joseph Conrad Society (UK). He is the author of Joseph Conrad: Betrayal and Identity, Cross-Cultural Encounters in Joseph Conrad’s Malay Fiction, and Conrad’s Secrets.

Abstract: The usages of the past, and of antiquity, were felt throughout history, reflecting the fabric of apologetic and ideological narratives. Antiquity is studied to understand time to understand the way in which the past is received, integrated, and used. This work gathers seven essays featuring case studies on ancient cultural identity via interdisciplinary approaches. Interdisciplinarity, thanks to the intersection of history, archaeology, and linguistics, corresponds to the transversal, comprehensive, and complex look essential to understand the intrinsic value of antiquity in each time and in each present. Ancient history and archaeology demonstrate how diverse the ancient world truly was. Socio-cultural change and dynamics in contact situations between groups of distinct cultures produced constant innovations and adaptations. In this book, the reader will access debates on intercultural experiences from the perspective of Phoenician colonists in Spain; the formation of a particular Greek identity built by Greek colonists in Sicily; the dramatic social and cultural transformations in the southern Levant following the regional transition to the Bronze Age; the integration of pre-Islamic Somalia in a trade network connected to the Mediterranean, from the Bronze to Iron ages; the multicultural influences inspiring the Book of Genesis; the cultural identity of early Christians as the New Testament is developed under the influence of Near Eastern traditions; and the complex multi-cultural and multi-ethnic dialogue behind the process of formation of Koine Greek during Byzantine times.

Abstract: Maintaining interpersonal relationships is essential for individuals to achieve successful human social interactions and healthy human development. As such, this book adds to our knowledge about how to develop interpersonal relationships wisely and strategically among individuals of different roles in a variety of dyadic relationships. The book addresses intriguing issues that reflect novel developments and relevant challenges in the field of interpersonal relationships, especially via works conducted with the dyadic approach to interpersonal synchrony and interpersonal divergence. It characterizes how the dyadic relationship is a crucial factor in successful healthcare treatment in clinical settings, gives an overview of how the dyadic approach reveals the role of interdependence between individuals within educational and counseling pairs, and demonstrates how the quality of interpersonal relationships contributes to organizational citizenship behaviors in organizational and management settings.

    Abstract: Chapter 1: Introduction -- Chapter 2: Marx -- Chapter 3: Smith -- Chapter 4: Ricardo -- Chapter 5: Sraffa -- Chapter 7: Marxists -- Chapter 8: Neoclassicals -- Chapter 9: Conclusions.
Abstract: This book is the first volume in a three-volume series that takes an in-depth look at the relevance of Marx's economics for understanding the modern economy. The focus of this volume is the money prices of commodities. In light of the failure of central banks to stimulate inflation through printing of money, it is now accepted that there are problems with the mainstream approach to the explanation of prices. Howard Nicholas underlines the shortcomings of this and other approaches to the explanation of prices, particularly their concepts of the value of the commodity and money. He argues the problems with all other approaches are manifest in their inability to explain the changes in the relative prices of commodities, taking place in the context of changes in the aggregate money price level as well as independently. He contends that of paramount importance in Marx’s explanation is that prices are set by producers prior to putting their commodities into the process of circulation, undermining the notion they are determined by the supply of and demand for the commodities in the process of exchange. Marx’s approach to the explanation of prices is also contrasted with those of Neoclassicals, Post-Keynesians and Sraffa, with a view to highlighting the shortcomings in these approaches as bases for their understanding and explanations of money and prices. This book will be of interest to academics and students of price theory, money and finance, political economy, and the history of economic thought. Howard Nicholas retired in 2020 as associate professor in economics at the International Institute of Social Studies, Erasmus University of Rotterdam, The Netherlands. He has published in the areas of inflation, development theory, financial markets, the global economy, and the macro dynamics of a number of countries. He is the author of Marx’s Theory of Price and its Modern Rivals (Palgrave Macmillan).

Abstract: This book sheds light on the addressees of online reviewer discourse on wine, perfume and chocolate in order to explore how the discourse construes the consumer of experiential luxury. In the 21st century, luxury is more complex than ever before. Luxury products have become more affordable and hence accessible to new markets and consumer segments, and the groups of consumers seeking luxury experiences are more heterogeneous than ever. Yet, consumption choices as well as how these are thought about, evaluated and talked about still function to position consumers with respect to both how they see themselves and how they want others to see them. Many consumers seek to consume in subtle and sophisticated ways. They strive to develop consumption expertise with a view to maximizing their enjoyment from the luxury experience, avoiding overt displays of wealth while signalling status by means of luxury insight only available to the cognoscenti. One way for aficionados to develop their insight into the diversified and elusive realm of contemporary luxury is to engage with online reviewer discourse. The authors take a discourse analytic approach informed by the Appraisal model to expose the imagined addressees’ characteristics and behaviour, the luxury values they embrace and the goals of their luxury consumption. The authors argue that the activity of online reviewers is such a crucial arena in contemporary luxury that a new form of luxury consumption has emerged, which they label review-based luxury. This book will be of interest to students and academics in the fields of Linguistics, Discourse Analysis, Communication, Argumentation, Media Studies and Marketing, as well as anyone with a general interest in wine, perfume and chocolate as experiential luxury. Charlotte Hommerberg is Senior Lecturer in English Linguistics at Linnaeus University, Sweden. Her engagement with discourse analysis comprises both teaching and research, and her prior work involves application and development of the Appraisal model for the study of wine discourse. Maria Lindgren is Associate Professor in Swedish Linguistics at Linnaeus University, Sweden. She has a keen interest in and a longstanding experience with discourse analysis in both teaching and research.

Abstract: Ninety years after the discovery of human influenza virus, Modern Flu traces the history of this breakthrough and its implications for understanding and controlling influenza ever since. Examining how influenza came to be defined as a viral disease in the first half of the twentieth century, it argues that influenza’s viral identity did not suddenly appear with the discovery of the first human influenza virus in 1933. Instead, it was rooted in the development of medical virus research and virological ways of knowing that grew out of a half-century of changes and innovations in medical science that were shaped through two influenza pandemics, two world wars, and by state-sponsored programs to scientifically modernise British medicine. A series of transformations, in which virological ideas and practices were aligned with and incorporated into medicine and public health, underpinned the viralisation of influenza in the 1930s and 1940s. Collaboration, conflict and exchange between researchers, medical professionals and governmental bodies lay at the heart of this process. This book is a history of how virus researchers, clinicians, and epidemiologists, medical scientific and public health bodies, and institutions, and philanthropies in Britain, the USA and beyond, forged a new medical consensus on the identity and nature of influenza. Shedding new light on the modern history of influenza, this book is a timely account of how ways of knowing and controlling this intractable epidemic disease became viral. Michael Bresalier is Lecturer in the History of Medicine and co-director of the Medical Humanities Research Centre at Swansea University, in the UK.

Abstract: “Tina Burrett’s book is an excellent addition to the comparative literature on political leadership. It will be extremely valuable to scholars of UK and Japanese politics, helping us to understand the elasticity and unpredictability of the contemporary premiership in both countries. Burrett impressively demonstrates the often-surprising similarities across the two countries, explaining how the revolving door premiership, associated with Japan, has now spread to the UK.” -- Mark Bennister, University of Lincoln, New Zealand. "This book deftly explores what it takes to be an effective leader in Japan and the UK. A must read for politicians as well as academics and students of politics." --Kono Taro, Minister for Digital Affairs This book analyses prime ministerial leadership in Britain and Japan since 1980. Exploring the interplay between personal skill, institutional resources and situational context in explaining the varying power and agency of different British and Japanese leaders, it asks whether the skills, strategies and circumstances needed for effective leadership are converging across liberal democracies. Comparing Britain and Japan reveals leadership trends that might otherwise go unobserved. The book addresses questions important to aspiring politicians as well as scholars, including: What accounts for the short tenure of most Japanese prime ministers? Does comparison with Japan explain the rapid turnover in British prime ministers since 2016? How is the influence of party factions on prime ministerial power evolving in Japan? Are British political parties more factional than commonly acknowledged? And how do changes in media technology affect leadership opportunities and constraints? The book draws on the author’s experience as a political researcher in both the British and Japanese parliaments and on interviews with over 40 politicians and political journalists working in both countries. Tina Burrett is Associate Professor of Political Science at Sophia University, Japan. She is the co-editor of The Routledge Handbook of Trauma in East Asia (2023), and Press Freedom in Contemporary Asia (2019) and author of Television and Presidential Power in Putin’s Russia (2011). She has worked in the British, Canadian and Japanese parliaments.

Abstract: This profound and insightful handbook aims to promote critical reflection on the way we conceptualise and study the radical left and to advance research by asking new questions. Radical left parties in Europe have been the subjects of significant study in the last decade, aided by the demonstrable success of newer parties like the Greek Syriza and Spanish Podemos, as well as the persistence of more established actors like the German Die Linke. Nevertheless, the emergent literature remains patchy and many elements of the party family still poorly understood. This handbook brings together a range of leading analysts to provide a definitive compendium, one that provides both students and scholars with an informative and easy-to-use guide to the radical left in Europe. Through utilising a common analytical framework to analyse the radical left in 19 European countries (within and outside the EU), the Palgrave Handbook of Radical Left Parties in Europe provides a wealth of comparable data on a wide number of cases to provide a sound basis for future studies. This rigorous comparative framework, allied with the unprecedented in-depth overview of the development of the European radical left over the past two decades, makes this handbook an essential starting place for those interested in all aspects of the radical left as a party family. Fabien Escalona is Research Associate at Sciences Po Grenoble, France, and journalist of the French online journal Mediapart. His publications include La reconversion partisane de la social-démocratie européenne (2018), European social democracy during the global economic crisis (co-edited with D. J. Bailey et al, 2014), and The Palgrave Handbook of Social Democracy in the European Union (co-edited, 2013). Daniel Keith is Senior Lecturer in Politics at the University of York, UK. His research interests include radical left politics, populist parties and internal party organisation. He has recently published research on political parties in journals including the European Journal of Political Research, West European Politics and Party Politics. He has also coedited the volumes Europe’s Radical Left from Marginality to Mainstream (edited, 2016) and the Routledge Handbook of Political Parties (forthcoming). Abstract: There are three volumes in this body of work. In Volume 1, we lay the foundation for a general theory of organizing. We propose that organizing is a continuous process of ongoing mutual or reciprocal influence between objects (e.g., human actors) in a field, whereby a field is infinite and connects all the objects in it much like electromagnetic fields influence atomic and molecular charged objects or gravity fields influence inanimate objects with mass such as planets and stars. We use field theory to build what we call the Network Field Model. In this model, human actors are modeled as point-like objects in the field. The influence between and investments in these point-like human objects are explained as energy exchanges (potential and kinetic), which can be described in terms of three different types of capital: financial (assets), human (the individual), and social (two or more humans in a network). This model is predicated on a field theoretical understanding of the world we live in. We use historical and contemporaneous examples of human activity and describe them in terms of the model. In Volume 2, we demonstrate how to apply the model. In Volume 3, we use experimental data to prove the reliability of the model. These three volumes will persistently challenge the reader’s understanding of time, position and what it means to be part of an infinite field.

Abstract: This monograph is the first study to critically examine works of performance made for an audience of one. Despite being a prolific feature of the performance scene since the turn of the millennium, critical writing about this area of contemporary practice remains scarce. This book proposes a genealogy of the curious relationship between solo performer and lone spectator through lineages in the histories of live art, visual art and theatre practices. Drawing on one-to-one performances by artists including Marilyn Arsem, Oreet Ashery, Franko B, Rosana Cade, Jess Dobkin, Karen Finley, David Hoyle, Adrian Howells, Kira O’Reilly, Barbara T Smith and Julie Tolentino, Rachel Zerihan produces research that is both affective and critical. This performance analysis proposes four frameworks through which to examine the significance and challenge of this work: cathartic, social, explicit and economic. One-to-one performance is proposed as a rich portal for examining the cultural politics of contemporary society. The book will appeal to students and scholars from performance studies, theatre, visual art and cultural studies. Rachel Zerihan is a writer and researcher who has taught extensively in higher education and is currently training to become a Child and Adolescent Psychotherapist. She has published widely and is co-editor of a Special Edition of Performing Ethos Journal on 'Ethics in One-to-One Performance' (2014), Intimacy Across Visceral and Digital Performance (Palgrave Macmillan, 2012) and Interfaces of Performance (2009).

Abstract: The increasing recognition of the role of structural racism affecting vulnerable groups motivated the scholarly work presented in this volume. The authors’ rigorous scholarship seeks to help readers identify and understand how structural racism impacts vulnerable groups and how effective practices may dismantle these structural forces. Nine chapters provide unique, comprehensive, and science-based approaches to identify and eliminate structural racism within healthcare, politics, and education systems. Policymakers, system administrators, scholars, students, and the public will benefit from the authors’ critical examples of structural racism within public systems across different countries, as well as from their proposed solutions.

Abstract: This book remedies the absence in the history of analytic philosophy of a detailed examination of G. E. Moore’s philosophical views as they developed between 1894 and 1902. This period saw the inauguration of analytic philosophy through the work of Moore and Bertrand Russell. Moore’s early views are examined in detail through unpublished archival material, including surviving letters, diaries, notes of lectures attended, papers for Cambridge societies, and drafts of early work, in order to revise the established view that the origin of analytic philosophy at Cambridge was an abrupt split from F. H. Bradley’s Absolute Idealism. Traditional accounts of this period have highlighted the anti-psychologism of Frege’s logic but have not explored the impact of this movement more broadly. Anti-psychologism was a key feature of the work of Moore’s teachers on the nature of the mind and its objects, in their interpretation of Kant, and in ethics. Moore’s teachers G.F. Stout and James Ward were significant contributors to the late 19th century debates in mental science and the developing new science of psychology. Henry Sidgwick’s criticisms of Kant and Bradley and his leading work in ethics were key influences on Moore. Moore’s Trinity Fellowship Dissertations are essential historical evidence of the development of Moore's new theory of judgment, a theory whose defining role in the origins of analytic philosophy cannot be overstated. Moore’s study of Kant in his dissertations ultimately formed the groundwork for his Principia Ethica (1903), which evolved from ideas that manifested in Moore’s earliest Apostles’ papers, developed through his dissertations, and were refined through his Elements of Ethics lectures (1898-99). This monumental work of early twentieth century ethics is thus shown to be the culmination of Moore’s early philosophical development.

Abstract: “Every once in a while, a book comes along that makes a fundamental contribution that is both profound and practical. A book that every member of the National Space Council, including the NASA Administrator and the Space Force chief of space operations should read. The Space Value of Money will be of interest to ESG and impact investors, government regulators, financial theorists, and outer space enthusiasts.” —Lt Col Peter Garretson, Senior Fellow in Defense Studies at the American Foreign Policy Council “No doubt, the pressing environmental challenges we face make the concept of the space impact of investments even more compelling.” —Dr. Pascal Blanqué, Chairman of Amundi Institute, Former Group CIO of Amundi Asset Management “The Space Value of Money brings much needed conceptual rigour, whilst further advocating the case for a new paradigm shift in financial valuation. This work gives us the lasting frameworks that aggregate impact across all spatial dimensions. Dr. Papazian culminates over ten years of research in this rich book, providing the springboard for further innovation and system implementation in this area.” —Domenico Del Re, Director, Sustainability and Climate Change, PwC “Enthralling and captivating. Papazian offers a clear, thorough, and comprehensive discussion. The Space Value of Money gives us an opportunity to reframe our thinking and to explore what is possible. A great read!” —Daud Vicary, Founding Trustee of the Responsible Finance and Investment Foundation “Armen has developed a novel way to create financial models that are better suited to dealing with the many parameters required if we are to properly consider environmental factors and sustainability in economics and finance. I have found this engaging and look forward to seeing its future use.” —Dr. Keith Carne, First Bursar, King’s College, Cambridge University The Space Value of Money introduces a fresh and innovative perspective on sustainability and finance. It expands our financial value framework, heretofore built around risk and time, by factoring in space, as an analytical dimension and our physical context. The proposed principle and metrics entrench our responsibility for space impact into our value equations, making finance inherently sustainable and acting as a theoretical bridge between core finance theory and the growing field of sustainable finance. The book offers a novel approach to value design, measurement, and creation, discussing the theoretical, mathematical, institutional, technological and data elements of the transformation. The space value framework enables the financial instruments that can help us address our evolutionary challenges/investments, like the transition to Net Zero. Armen V. Papazian is a financial economist, a visionary thinker and innovator. He is a former stock exchange executive, investment banker, lecturer in finance, consultant, and researcher. He earned his PhD at the University of Cambridge, Judge Business School, King’s College Cambridge.

Abstract: Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is the most prevalent neurodevelopmental disorder. Previously, it was considered a disorder that affected children only. Recently, however, there is no doubt that ADHD can affect adults as well, but with different clinical presentation. Thus, it is critical to understand how the clinical picture of the disorder changes with development. Traditional ADHD diagnostic procedures are broadening and incorporating new entities like endophenotypes. Comorbidity is a rule, especially if ADHD is not recognized and treated early. New genetic studies bring deeper and more concise knowledge about the disorder's etiology. This book addresses these aspects of ADHD to bring about more clarity and understanding of the disorder

Abstract: We live in the era of the digital revolution characterized by easy access to obtaining, processing and disseminating information on a global scale. The emergence of these global digital spaces has transformed the world of communication. This shift in our understanding of what we should be informed about, when and how, manifests itself not only within mature liberal democracies, which grant their citizens and the media constitutionally guaranteed freedom of speech and rights associated with obtaining information, but also within developing countries with different types of political establishments. Moreover, many media producers, especially journalists and persons claiming to be journalists, abuse their crucial mission and, instead, foster a set of serious communication phenomena that threaten basic human rights and freedoms, weaken them or decelerate their development. The publication is focused on the ways fake news, disinformation, misinformation and hateful statements are spread across society, predominantly within the online environment. Its main ambition is to offer an interdisciplinary body of scholarly knowledge on fake news, disinformation and propaganda in relation to today's journalism, social development, political situation and cultural affairs happening all around the world

Abstract: Since the turn of the century, the liberalization of capital markets has caused exponential growth of foreign direct investment (FDI). However, developments in recent years have shown that countries have placed limitations on foreign investors. In addition, dynamic economic developments in the surge of financial and economic crisis and later have clearly exposed the possibility that FDI will change course and result in foreign direct divestment. This book looks at specific country experiences related to FDI as well as determinants of FDI that could be connected to the new course of divestment

Abstract: This book examines the technical, market, and policy innovations for unlocking sustainable investment in the energy sector. While finalizing this book, the COVID-19 pandemic is cutting a devastating swath through the global economy, causing the biggest fall in energy sector investment, exacerbating the global trade finance gap, worsening signs of growing income inequality, and devastating the health and livelihoods of millions. What is the parallel between the COVID-19 pandemic and the climate change crisis? The impacts of the global pandemic are expected to last for a few years, whereas those associated with the climate crisis will play out over several decades with potentially irreversible consequences. However, both show that the cost of inaction or delay in addressing the risks can lead to devastating outcomes or a greater probability of irreversible, catastrophic damages. In the context of sustainable energy investment and the transition to a low-carbon, climate-resilient economy, what ways can financial markets and institutions support net-zero-emission activities and the shift to a sustainable economy, including investment in energy efficiency, low-carbon and renewable energy technologies? This book provides students, policymakers, and energy investment professionals with the knowledge and theoretical tools necessary to address related questions in sustainable energy investment, risk management, and energy innovation agendas

Abstract: Medical toxicology is a sub-branch of toxicology concerned with the diagnosis, management, and prevention of poisoning and other adverse effects of drugs, cosmetics, personal care products, occupational and environmental toxicants, and biological agents. Poisoning with drugs, herbs, venoms, and toxins is a significant global public health problem. Medical toxicologists are involved in the assessment and treatment of acute or chronic poisoning, substance abuse, adverse drug reactions, drug overdoses, envenomation, industrial accidents, and other chemical exposures. As such, there is a pressing need for safe and specific antidotes, as many antidotes currently in use have a relatively low margin of safety or therapeutic index. This book focuses on poisonings with drugs, venoms, toxins, interaction in clinics, antidotes, and forensics. It provides qualified scientific knowledge on different aspects of medical toxicology, drug and substance abuse, clinical interactions between drugs and herbs, antidotes, antidote networks, and forensic toxicology

Abstract: This book, Casting Processes and Modelling of Metallic Materials, explores the various casting and modelling activities related to metallic alloy systems. The book provides results of research work conducted by experts from all over the globe to add to the research community in the era of the casting process and modelling. The book was edited by two experts in the field of materials science and modelling, Dr. Abdallah and Dr. Aldoumani, whom both have several publications in peer-reviewed journals, worldwide conferences, and scientific books. The book introduces the casting processes and then discusses the various issues and possible solutions. Over the past years, various models have been proposed and utilized to predict the performance of castings. Some of these models proved to be accurate whereas others failed to predict the casting performance. The strength of any predictive tool depends on the employment of physically meaningful parameters that replicate the real-life conditions. This has been illustrated in the current book with such predictive models and finite element (FE) modelling to illustrate the behaviour of castings in real-life conditions

Abstract: Tackling the realities of the antimicrobial resistance (AMR) situation today is no longer uncommon. Many battles have been fought in the past since the discovery of antibiotics between man and microbes. In the tussle of new antibiotic modifications, the transmission of resistant genes, both vertically and horizontally unveils yet another resistant attribute for the microbe, for it only to be faced with a more powerful, wide spectrum antibiotic; the cycle continues-and the winner is yet to be known. This book aims to provide some insight into various molecular mechanisms, agricultural mitigation methods, and the One Health applications to maybe, just maybe, tip the scales towards us

Abstract: In recent years, coastal environments have drawn an increasing awareness globally, regionally, or locally as in many coastal regions, the rapid industrial, urban, and agricultural development has caused dramatic land use and land cover (LULC) changes and various water pollution events in coastal environments. These environmental consequences of human activities exacerbate the effects of regional and global climate change on the hydrological cycle between the land and ocean, and these effects are frequently hazardous or destructive to coastal regions around the world. Remote sensing and geographic information systems (GIS) technologies are thoroughly adopted and applied to monitor the dynamic change of coastal environments, such as coastal LULC, water quality, and marine ecosystem

Abstract: This book is a contribution to the fast and broad Density Functional Theory (DFT) applications of the last few years. Since 2000, the DFT has grown exponentially in several computational areas because of its versatility and reliability to calculate energy from electronic density. The fast DFT’s calculations show how scientists develop more codes focused to simulate molecular and material properties reaching better conclusions than with previous theories. More powerful computers and lower computational costs have certainly assisted the increased growth of interest in this theory. Each chapter presents a specific subject contributing to a vision of the great potential of the quantum/DFT simulations in high pressure, chemical reactivity, ionic liquid, chemoinformatic, molecular docking, and non-equilibrium state

Abstract: Stroke continues to be a major public health issue. It is the third leading cause of death and disability across the globe. Its early identification and treatment along with prevention are major issues that confront a treating physician. We have understood the importance of early intervention and of the quote ‘time is brain’. Our endeavor now should be directed to the public at large and paramedics in particular. Although a stroke is a common condition, the availability of neurologists or stroke specialists is quite scarce. Today, management of a suspected case of stroke is done by a specialist team of medical and paramedical personnel. Advances in imaging, newer therapeutic agents, and endovascular management have revolutionized the management. Currently, we are witnessing a new era in the management of strokes and I am hopeful that continued research will get us to a satisfactory solution. This book along with another book from IntechOpen titled ‘Ischemic Stroke of Brain’ aims to improve the understanding of stroke medicine for postgraduate medical students in medicine and neurology who have an interest in stroke care

Abstract: To understand and model the turbulent behavior of flowing fluids is one of the most fascinating, intriguing, annoying, and most important problems of engineering and physics. Admittedly most of the fluid flows are turbulent. In the known universe, turbulence is evident at the macroscopic scale and the microscopic scale in identical proportions. Turbulence is manifested in many places, such as: a plethora of technological devices, atmospheres and ocean currents, astronomical or galactic motions, and biological systems like circulation or respiration. With the continuum as an assumption, the equations that define the physics of fluid flow are the Navier-Stokes equations modeled during the mid-19th Century by Claude-Louis Navier and Sir George Gabriel Stokes. These equations define all flows, even turbulent flows, yet there is no analytical solution to even the simplest turbulent flow possible. However, the numerical solution of the Navier-Stokes equation is able to describe the flow variable as a function of space and time. It is called direct numerical simulations (DNS), which is the subject matter of this book

Abstract: The progressive growth in the number of older adults worldwide has led to a modification of the current healthcare scenario and a parallel increase in the use of public resources. In this book, we propose a conceptual framework within which aging, frailty, and care are analyzed through the lens of complexity medicine. Therefore, we present a multidimensional perspective that takes into account biomedical, (neuro)psychological, and socio-ecological vulnerability. The theses presented are the result of an inductive approach, based on many years of experience in the field, which has made it possible to identify strategies for frailty recognition and effective responses even in complicated clinical settings. The book is intended to be a tool of concrete and easy consultation, rich in reflections and suggestions

Abstract: Noise pollution is one of the factors that affect the quality of life of the general population, especially in urban areas, where the noise levels are often high due to the presence of numerous sources, such as transport infrastructures, activities production and commercial areas, entertainment venues and other sound sources which, although temporary, such as construction sites and outdoor music events, affect general noise levels. Even if noise is one of the oldest pollutants referred to in history, for years, the problem of noise pollution has been often considered less important than others related to the environment, such as air pollution, water pollution, and waste management. The regulations in force to contain the noise have become increasingly stringent as each individual is constantly exposed to noise and often the noise is treated just as a scourge of modern society. Making noise is becoming easier and cheaper each day, but just the opposite for controlling it. Deeper studies are needed to understand the core of current noise problems; new materials and techniques are needed to control them. This book is a combination of theory and practice based on the latest research. The studies in this book range from evaluation methods for the perception of noise and outline forecast criteria that can be integrated with applications for acoustic mapping as well as the use of innovative techniques and materials for its abatement. The main purpose of this book, organized in 8 chapters, is to provide an overview of the recent studies in this field and the applications in different research studies. The authors, contributing to the success of this book, provide a series of practical applications of their recent studies aimed at the reduction of noise in different environments. The editors would like to thank all the authors who, through their studies and research, have accepted our invitation to share recent discoveries in this field with the scientific community

Abstract: Translational research in oncology benefits from an abundance of knowledge resulting from genome-scale studies concerning the molecular pathways involved in tumorigenesis. Translational oncology represents a bridge between basic research and clinical practice in cancer medicine. The vast majority of cancer cases are due to environmental risk factors. Many of these environmental factors are controllable lifestyle choices. Experimental cancer treatments are studied in clinical trials to compare the proposed treatment to the best existing treatment through translational research. The key features of the book include: 1) New screening for the development of radioprotectors: radioprotection and anti-cancer effect of β-Glucan (Enterococcus faecalis) 2) Translational perspective on hepatocellular carcinoma 3) Brachytherapy for endometrial cancer 4) Discovery of small molecule inhibitors for histone methyltransferases in cancer

Abstract: The liver is one of the organs that receives blood mostly from the systemic circulation. The liver is an important organ in which most metabolic events develop. The detoxification of toxins is also amongst the liver functions. In some cases, liver pathologies can be easily treated, and in some cases, it can lead to the end of life. Liver tumors, bacterial and viral infections, cirrhosis, and Wilson’s disease are among the most common liver diseases. Liver cancers can be primary or secondary due to metastases from other organs. Patients with secondary liver tumors can even be diagnosed without a primary tumor diagnosis. Early diagnosis of liver diseases can increase treatment success. Physicians may encounter liver diseases throughout their professional life. Therefore, our book has been prepared for all physicians. The distinguished authors in our book wrote their chapters by combining their scientific knowledge with their experiences

Abstract: Structural integrity and failure assessment have been considered by many fields of engineers as it is a multi-disciplinary concept. The assessment procedure vitally ensures that structural elements will remain functional throughout their service lives. Structural failure refers to the loss of structural integrity by means of loss at the component- or system-level elements. The main concern of integrity assessment is that a structural failure may be avoided at the service level by designing the structure to withstand its designated loads. Hence, for satisfactory structural performance, structural safety, failure, and interaction between them should be considered throughout the design and analysis stages. This book is a collection of chapters that provide the researcher with a comprehensive perspective on structural integrity and its sub-disciplines
