Abstract: pNotwithstanding its many successes since 1945, the project of European integration currently faces major difficulties, from financial crises and mass immigration to the impending departure of the UK from the European Union. At the same time, these challenges have spurred civil society organizations within and across Europe, revealing a shared public sphere in which citizens can mobilize around refugee rights, opposition to austerity policies, and other issues. emEuropeanization in Sweden/em assembles new empirical research on how these processes have played out in one of the continent's wealthiest nations, providing insights into whether, and how, the "Swedish model" can guide European integration./p

Abstract: In the decades prior to the Revolution of 1917, the Russian intelligencija was strongly influenced by Western European intellectuals, including Friedrich Nietzsche. Nietzsche was one of the European philosophers who played a prominent role in shaping Russian perceptions of reality in this period, although his thought was interpreted by Russians in contrasing ways. The article examines the case of Dmitrij Merežkovskij, reassessing the extent of Nietzsche's influence on his oeuvre. In our view, Nietzsche did not only influence Merežkovskij's early poetry, where aesthetic and anti-Christian views prevail, but also contributed to the sensual and individualist nature of his later prose

Abstract: From 1928 to 1932 Italy's Istituto per l'Europa orientale (Eastern European Institute) published a book series entitled "Piccola Biblioteca Slava." This was not the first book series devoted to Slavic culture nor the last. Indeed, "Piccola Biblioteca Slava" closely resembles current practice at IPEO both for the quality of its collaborators and for the importance of the topics covered. As a whole, the series constitutes a concrete attempt to introduce Slavic literatures into Italian culture and it provides a unique source for reconstructing the history of Slavic studies in Italy

Abstract: The Croatian Moderna is usually defined as the moment when Croatian literature catches up with the literary trends that were current in Europe at that time. This "turn to Europe" was made possible by a series of historical events as well as by the experiences of a number of Croatian students living abroad, who encouraged the transnational debate that would eventually revolutionize Croatian literary culture. We argue, using the terms of Pierre Bourdieu, that the transnational and cosmopolitan nature of Moderna made possible the genesis of an autonomous Croatian literary field

Abstract: This volume presents the results of a research on clerks and managers in large companies of the engineering sector (at the FCA and Leonardo centres), which she conducted using a participatory research methodology. The survey aimed at analysing the changes in professionalism, organization, quality of work and relationship with the trade union in recent years with regard to the main employment domains (administration, commerce, research and development, production support), in the face of the progressive disappearance of a homogeneous professional and social identity of the employment world and of the new 4.0 technologies' growing impact. The research was conducted with qualitative (interviews and focus) and quantitative (a survey of workers) research methods, and revealed discussions and comparisons between researchers, social actors from the involved companies (trade unionists and managers) and a group of scholars who followed the whole process

Abstract: The chapters in this book reflect on the practice of using narratives to understand individual and social reality. They all reveal dimensions of the same concrete reality: contemporary society of Central South Africa. Except for two, all the chapters originated from research in the program The Narrative Study of Lives, situated in the Department of Sociology at the University of the Free State in Bloemfontein, South Africa. Each chapter opens a window on an aspect of everyday life in Central South Africa. Each window displays the capacity of the narrative as a methodological tool in qualitative research to open up better understandings of everyday experience. The chapters also reflect on the epistemological journey towards unwrapping and breaking open of meaning. Narratives are one of many tools available to sociologists in their quest to understand and interpret meaning. But, when it comes to deep understanding, narratives are particularly effective in opening up more intricate levels of meaning associated with emotions, feelings, and subjective experiences

Abstract: According to 19th-century philologist Jernej Kopitar, elite literary traditions and modern written languages originated in folk literature. Leading Slovenian intellectuals of his day, however, including poet France Prešeren and linguist and critic Matija Čop, favored classic poetic forms reminiscent of the Italian Renaissance. In Slovenian literary history, Kopitar has remained a figure of secondary importance; nonetheless, his role in other South Slavic cultures was preeminent. We examine several attempts to revert this tendency and to ascribe to Kopitar, and not only to Čop, a leading role in Slovenian nation-building

Abstract: Exploring the role played by the society in the relationship between citizenship and education is at the heart of the issues addressed in this book, which was the result of a collective reflection held on 8-9 November 2016 during a symposium organized in Besançon. Gathering historians, philosophers and sociologists, three reflection axis are developed: the first focuses on the discourses produced by society itself on citizenship; the second deals with the diffusion of the notion of citizenship in society; the third focuses on the crises of citizenship and their responses.

Abstract: In Russia, the term "Europeanism" first appeared in the 19th century. The russkij evropeec (European Russian) received a European upbringing that incorporated the moral and cultural values developed within European civilization since the 14th century and can be seen as an embodiment of the European spirit. We argue that the apogee of russkij evropeec may be represented by Maksim Maksimovič Kovalevskij (1851-1916), historian, jurist, sociologist, ethnographer, and political activist, who died on the eve of Empire's fall. This article examines the components of the European idea as they are are found in the autobiographical writings of this outstanding intellectual

Abstract: Social security systems are in crisis almost everywhere in the world, partly due to the bad management from the past, especially far back in time, and partly due to their intrinsic characteristics, which were not always well understood by those who designed them, and even less so by those who subsequently intervened to change them. However, removing the many layers that have gradually been added to the debate, it seems possible to focus on the few, truly relevant variables about the issue, to separate the political choices from the exogenous variables (the constraints), to bring out the consequences of the different possible choices in the long and short run, and thus to contribute to safeguarding one of the cornerstones the modern social state, even if it is downsized in the process. In doing so, it also seems appropriate to clarify the compromise point that is intended to be pursued between actuarial equity and redistribution, two unfortunately incompatible, but still very relevant goals, which have always (confusingly) been present in the debate on the social security systems

Abstract: In 1993 Michael Wachtel published Ivanov's Russian Faust, comprising two scenes that appear to continue Goethe's Faust and most likely represent the beginnings of a Faust drama. Ivanov was the first Russian poet to reevaluate the second part of Goethe's poem for its extremely symbolic content. As a result, he was considerably influenced by Goethe's creative experience. This article examines these two Faustian scenes and, more generally, the influence of Goethe's Faust in Ivanov's work; adopting a comparative approach, we explore the assimilation into Russian literature of a Central European myth

Abstract: This article examines travel letters that Ljubomir Nenadović (1826-1895) wrote from Switzerland (1847), Italy (1850-1851) and Germany (1870). Marking three different phases in the literary biography of their author, these texts provide evidence of the travel letter's polyphonic nature. We argue that the dynamic shape and narrative texture of Nenadović's letters find their source in the nature of the differences that he observes and identifies, differences that distinguish these countries from his Serbian homeland and, more generally, from the cultural and geographic space of the Slavs

Abstract: This article argues that the traditional picture of Russian Futurists as fiercely opposed to this war does not correspond to reality. We begin by examining the general historical background for Marinetti's notorious motto "War as the World's only Hygiene" and identify echoes of this conception in articles that Vladimir Majakovskij published in the autumn of 1914. Nationalistic and panslavic ideas, coupled with anti-German sentiments, characterized the early years of Velimir Chlebnikov's literary activity; we explore these ideas and Chlebnikov's gradual passage from this belligerent vision to his utopian project for a world without wars

Abstract: This study explores the controversial arguments that took place around the "teoria del gender" and its perceived impact on education in Italy, particularly between 2013 and 2016. An investigation of newspaper articles, media campaigns and declarations of Catholic Church representatives shows how the "anti-gender" movements have influenced public opinion to oppose gender equality and sexuality education in schools. Through an analysis of educational projects in the municipality of Cagliari, the author highlights the main obstacles the actors of these projects had to face: a widespread lack of awareness on gender equality issues; contrasting political dynamics and interests; strong misinformation campaigns led by a mostly Catholic opposition. This study intends to provide a foundation for further research and for the development of new strategies to respond to these challenges. Education is here understood as a fundamental means to achieve gender equality, because of its potential for the deconstruction of traditional gender norms and for the development of critical thinking

Abstract: The article addresses textual decisions made by Čechov's editors in publishing his early short stories. We demonstrate that choices made by other editors and translators has depended crucially on the configuration of his texts found in academic editions of Čechov's Complete Works. Specifically, in the volumes that these editions devote to the young Čechov, editors place what are in fact the first versions of these short stories in the critical appendix, while furnishing as the featured examples of these texts' versions that Čechov had reviewed and retouched for collections published during his lifetime. As a result, works of the "young Čechov" are often actually works of the "mature Čechov", a situation that has led to a worldwide misunderstanding

Abstract: The paper is about Sergej Ivanovič Zarudnyj, a central figure in Tsar Alexander II's "great reforms". Descended from the family of a Cossack staršyna from Sloboda Ukraine, Zarudnyj had a brillant career in the imperial capital as a engaged reformer of Russia's backwards legal system. His cultural origins, his family's history, and his education at Kharkiv University deeply affected his translation work and legal discourse; in both of these spheres, he aimed to introduce and popularize the products of Italian legal culture in the Russian Empire

Abstract: This article investigates the rhetoric of martyrdom that developed in seventeenth-century Ukraine and specifically the discourse of Orthodox martyrdom as elaborated by Ukrainian Baroque preachers in recounting the life and death of the martyrized princes Boris and Gleb. We focus in particular on one exemplary case, that of Antonij Radyvylovs'kyj's Slovo pervoe na sviatyx strastoterpec kniazej Borisa i Gleba (Kyiv, 1676). Tracing the contours of specific ideologies of martyrdom that arose in 17th-century Kyiv, we also address the issue of interconfessional encounters, in particular those taking place along the Orthodox-Catholic divide

Abstract: This article examine handwriting textbooks from 18th-century Europe. In 1774 the court of Vienna charged Johann Ignaz Felbiger with reforming the schools and his book on penmanship (1775) became the standard reference for how to write. In 1776 the Court sought a book on penmanship to be used specifically in Serbian and Vlach schools; the textbook of Zaharija Orfelin (1778) came into being to fill this need. The textbooks of both Felbiger and Orphelin have their basis in Felbiger's first book on penmanship (1768). We also explore the possibility that other European handwriting manuals served as models for earlier works by Orfelin (1759, 1776)

Abstract: The Vocabolario di tre nobilissimi linguaggi, produced by Ivan Tanzlingher-Zanotti between the latter half of the 17th and the beginning of the 18th century, currently exists in four manuscript versions: one is located in Zagreb, another in London, a third in Padova, and the fourth discovered only recently in Zadar. We focus on the Padova manuscript, which represents Tanzlingher's mature work, to show that it differs importantly from other lexicographical works originating in 17th-century Dalmatia: while those are based on Latin models, here Tanzlingher turns for the first time to the Crusca Dictionary (Vocabolario degli Accademici della Crusca)

Abstract: Empirio-criticism had a huge impact in Russia, where the works of Ernst Mach and Richard Avenarius works were avidly translated and discussed, while the question of whether or not their ideas could be combined with Marxism provoked many disputes within the Russian Social Democratic Labor Party or RSDRP (Rossijskaja social-demokratičeskaja rabočaja partija). Anatolij Lunačarskij, who attended Avenarius's classes and seminars in Zurich, particularly appreciated the opportunity to blend critical evaluation, emotion, and objective knowledge. In this period prior to the Revolution, Lunačarskij developed a sort of 'religious' Marxism, full of hope and enthusiasm for a final human conquest of nature, views that he continued to hold into Soviet times

Abstract: Speaking at the IV International Congress of Slavists in Moscow (1958) on the Second South Slavic influence in Rus', Dmitrij Lichačëv presented his ideas on an "Eastern European Pre-Renaissance". Lichačëv's thesis received some criticism from the young Riccardo Picchio, who was then developing the idea of an "Orthodox Slavic revival (rinascita)". This article revisit the debate between these two important scholars, taking into account both subsequent developments in the research of each and more recent studies on the topic

Abstract: Will the new technological revolution inevitably destroy work? And will we have to get used to a society creating less and less employment opportunities? Shying away from apocalyptic as well as naively optimistic predictions, the Lecture offers some points for reflection on this question, constantly recurring in the media and the public, political and scientific debate. Based on what the past taught, the future depends on business and political strategies, and even on individual social actors

Abstract: The article explores the cultural and linguistic interrelationship of Russia, Armenia and Europe through the lens of quotation and intertextuality in Andrei Bitov's Armenian Lessons (first edition 1969). This text is the ideal site for demonstrating the importance of quotation in the author's prose. We address two different aspects of this question, first Bitov's literary and cultural intertextual references; second, his quotations from everyday language. In both cases, the "language of the Other" seeps into the text, forming bridges that connect apparently distant cultures

Abstract: Numerous and rich materials in yet unpublished archives provide information on the coproduction of several Italian and Soviet films, the first of which is Giuseppe De Santis's Attack and Retreat (1961-1964), representing almost four years' of work. This article examines radically different versions of the script, the minutes of meetings in which these scripts were reviewed by both parties, and other documents relating to process of joint production to reveal a number of curious details. We also demonstrate that this was a far from peaceful process and that the tortuous progress made by the partners was symptomatic of political and cultural issues in their countries of origin

Abstract: This article explores the diplomatic correspondence sent to the Doge of Venice by Peter I (1721) and by his daughter Empress Elizabeth I (1743), informing him of peace treaties that had recently been concluded between Russia and Sweden. Analyzing these letters in the context of Russia's diplomatic and epistolary relations with Venice in the 17th and 18th centuries, we examine their structure and composition with particular attention to the presence of diplomatic and epistolary formulae to identify evolutionary changes in the diplomatic and epistolary etiquette employed by Peter I and his successors

Abstract: Notable among the stylistic tools adopted by Dostoevskij to disseminate the values that he considered crucial for the moral revival of contemporary Russian society is the use of the aphorism. This article explores the origins of the renowned maxim "If you want to overcome the whole world, overcome yourself", a phrase that recurs either in this form or with some variation in the literary and journalistic texts that Dostoyevsky authored towards the end of his life. Abstract: In Ruslan i Ljudmila, Puškin arranges European and Russian sources in a particular dialectic system that may be seen as illustrative of his poetics. Specifically, the poema's dedication and its theme recall the novellas of Giambattista Casti; the narrating cat in the prologue may be connected to the celebrated fables of Tieck, Perrault, and Hoffmann; events and battle scenes in the text derive from the chronicles; and Ruslan's deeds from lubočnaja literatura. Images of the "lascivious East", together with other eroticized descriptive passages point to the well-known models of Moore, Byron, Goethe, and Parny, while in the weave of Ruslan i Ljudmila's individual cantos, we find quotations from Macpherson, Ozerov, and Tasso

Abstract: The anonymous Choždenie na Florentijskij sobor is one of four works written by Russian envoys to the Council of Ferrara-Florence (1438-1439), an event that sealed the union of the Catholic and Orthodox Churches. This article addresses the problem of that unknown author's social status, an issue of controversy in the several studies devoted to this text beginning in the 19th century. Our linguistic and stylistic analysis examines the author in terms of his cultural literacy and explores how his conception of literary standards was shaped by specific experiences of reading and writing

Abstract: With this article, we introduce our project for enlarging the Italian-Russian parallel corpus of the NKRJa (Nacional'nyj korpus russkogo jazyka) and outline several of its current and future applications. The newly expanded corpus has now reached roughly four million words, and we expect to reach 20 million, the size required for a corpus that is balanced and reliable. In order to illustrate possible applications for the Italian-Russian parallel corpus, we offer two examples: the first is its experimental use in the teaching of translation at the University of Bologna; the second its use in the context of research in Russian-Italian Contrastive Linguistics on the topic of the non-temporal qualities of the Russian future tense

Abstract: Facing the present in relation to the past, the "outsideness" of Italian Slavic studies can be seen to represent a liminal space between the self and the Other. This article discusses how the image of the Russian poet, who is capable of both satisfying a Russian quest for uniqueness and legitimizing what Western eyes often see as Russian culture's illegibility, intersects with themes raised in the field of diversity studies. Our close analysis of texts and facts, conducted using a polycentric approach and with reference to notions of "approximation" and "contamination", acknowledges differences as a step not towards their elimination or homogenization, but towards the "translation" into one's own culture of voices that were originally distinct

Iłłakowiczówna, who was opposed to nationalism approaches and considered Polish tradition to be of a piece with European culture, translated into Polish several masterpieces from French, English, German, Russian, Romanian, and Hungarian literary traditions. In order to demonstrate the role that different literary traditions and the visual arts played in writings such as Wyznanie, we also investigate Iłłakowiczówna's paratexts - her memoirs, talks, and letters

Abstract: This article considers the presence of modernist elements in poetry from the second half of the 20th century, focusing in particular on Russian and Ukrainian examples. We argue for the necessity of properly recognizing and analyzing modernist phenomena in a period (1960s-1980s) when these have often been eclipsed by a tendency in literary criticism to overstate the role of Postmodernism. We also examine differences in the Western and Soviet cultural contexts and in the roles that Neomodernist poetics played in the poetry of various authors, groups and texts

Moving away from a national and philological approach, we focus on interculturality and imagology. Our conclusions unfold at the intersection of these two fields, as well as "at the edge of literature and philosophy" (in Derrida's terms), where the relationship between Croatian and Italian cultural has been shaped according to various factors - literary, political, historical and also psychological

Abstract: A visually striking intercultural exploration of the use of mobile phones in Aboriginal communities in Australia. Yuta is the Yolngu word for new. Phone & Spear: A Yuta Anthropology is a project inspired by the gloriously cheeky and deeply meaningful audiovisual media made with and circulated by mobile phones by an extended Aboriginal family in northern Australia. Building on a ten-year collaboration by the community-based arts collective Miyarrka Media, the project is an experiment in the anthropology of co-creation. It is a multivoiced portrait of an Indigenous society using mobile phones inventively to affirm connections to kin and country amid the difficult and often devastating circumstances of contemporary remote Aboriginal life. But this is not simply a book about Aboriginal art, mobile phones, and social renewal. If old anthropology understood its task as revealing one world to another, yuta anthropology is concerned with bringing different worlds into relationship. Following Yolngu social aesthetics—or what Miyarrka Media translate as “the law of feeling”—the book is a relational technology in its own right: an object that combines color, pattern, and story to bring once distant worlds into new sensuously mediated connections

Abstract: This book provides a rich analysis of the history of Swedish victim support. With the majority of research on victim support centering on the Anglosphere, this book offers a unique case study for considering the role of the victim in the criminal justice system. While Sweden has enacted many laws to support victims, and victim assistance programs have grown rapidly, welfare policy has become more restrictive and crime policy, to some degree, more punitive. Drawing on archival material and interviews with key representatives for the Swedish Association for Victim Support (BOJ), this book examines what role the victim movement has played in a changing welfare state. It argues that BOJ filled a function in the decentralization and privatization of the Swedish welfare state and explores distinctive features of the Swedish victim movement and the form it has taken, as compared to that in other countries. This book will be of interest to scholars and students of criminology, sociology, social policy, civil society studies, and social work, and those engaged in studies of victims and victimology

Abstract: The literature on gender and science shows that scientific careers continue to be characterised – albeit with important differences among countries – by strong gender discriminations, especially in more prestigious positions. Much less investigated is the issue of which stage in the career such differences begin to show up. Gender and Precarious Research Careers aims to advance the debate on the process of precarisation in higher education and its gendered effects, and springs from a three-year research project across institutions in seven European countries: Italy, Belgium, the Netherlands, Iceland, Switzerland, Slovenia and Austria. Examining gender asymmetries in academic and research organisations, this insightful volume focuses particularly on early careers. It centres both on STEM disciplines (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) and SSH (Social Science and Humanities) fields. Offering recommendations to design innovative organisational policies and self-tailored ‘Gender Equality Plans’ to be implemented in universities and research centres, this volume will appeal to students and researchers interested in fields such as Gender Studies, Sociology of Work and Industry, Sociology of Knowledge, Business Studies and Higher Education

Abstract: This is the first book that highlights how socialization is experienced as being a complex concept in everyday life in various countries of the world. The book represents the first attempt to provide an original and multidimensional definition of socialization that takes into account the contribution of different disciplines, such as philosophy, psychology, sociology, education, and even architecture, to underline its importance as a key aspect of human experience. Therefore, it represents an extraordinary opportunity to outline new horizons in the field

Abstract: The STIAS research theme on Being Human Today explores the interrelated questions: What does it mean to be human? And: What is the nature of the world in which we aspire to be human? In the context of post-apartheid South Africa race and racism remain key references in both these questions. Why is this so, considering that the biological basis of race thinking has been refuted? Templates of race and racialism remain at the core of state policy in South Africa, periodic gross incidents of racism surface in public, and notions of the existence of races remain central to everyday thinking and discourse. This book is the result of the work of a group of leading thinkers and their in-depth conversations at STIAS during the winter of 2015 on the effects of race. Convened by evolutionary anthropologist Nina Jablonski and sociologist Gerhard Mar, the group included Njabulo Ndebele, Chabani Manganyi, Barney Pityana, Crain Soudien, Göran Therborn, Mikael Hjerm, Zimitri Erasmus and George Chaplin. The group reconvened annually through 2017. This is the first in a series of planned publications on the their work

Abstract: Social class remains a fundamental presence in British life in the twenty-first century. It is woven into the very fabric of social and political discourse, undiminished by the end of mass industry; unaugmented despite the ascendancy of 'ordinary working people' and other substitute phrases. Absent from this landscape, however, is any compelling Marxist expression or analysis of class. In Class Matters, Charles Umney brings Marxist analysis out of the 19th century textiles mill, and into the call centres, office blocks and fast food chains of modern Britain. He shows how core Marxist concepts are vital to understanding increasing pay inequality, decreasing job security, increasing routinisation and managerial control of the labour process. Providing a critical analysis of competing perspectives, Umney argues that class must be understood as a dynamic and exploitative process integral to capitalism - rather than a descriptive categorisation - in order for us to better understand the gains capital has made at the expense of labour over the last four decades

Abstract: In December of 1984, the members of United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW) Local P-9 initiated a campaign against wage and benefit concessions at Geo. A. Hormel Company in Austin, Minnesota. By summer, they were involved in what many observers would come to regard as the strike of the decade, both because of the energy and imagination of the union members and because of the nationwide response to their cause. Nevertheless, by spring 1986, Hormel had proclaimed victory-and the strikers' unsympathetic International union brought an end to the strike by placing the local in receivership. The Austin strike was far from an ordinary labor dispute: For the 1,500 P-9 families and their supporters, it was nothing less than a crusade to defend the Middle American way of life. As a consultant for Corporate Campaign, Inc., a firm hired by the strikers to advance their cause, Hardy Green offers the first insider's account of this watershed strike. He traces the history of labor relations at Hormel and in the meatpacking industry, and outlines the innovative union techniques employed by the strikers, the "corporate campaign." Using records obtained through a comprehensive freedom-of-information project, Green reveals behind-the-scenes operations of the National Guard and various law enforcement agencies that proved crucial to breaking the strike. And he discusses the meaning of the local's dual fight-with both the Hormel company and with its own International union-within the current labor environment

Abstract: How will work be configured in the future? What new entities and values will emerge following the transformations of the Fourth Industrial Revolution? How decisive will worker participation be for the success of organizations? This book offers concrete experiences of 'creative' participation of workers and managers in companies committed to developing an intelligent organization. The first part of the book offers the contribution of workers, employees or managers who may also have negotiating roles in union bargaining, but who are above all committed to making everything work, offering opportunities that are able to regenerate processes and enhance workers. The second part contains reflections and proposals on how participation experiences can urge the academic world, trade unions, politics and the legislative system to deepen and take into account the new needs of work, in order to build a virtuous circle that supports companies and workers, management and participation in the complex challenges posed by innovation and the competitive world of production

Abstract: Books tell stories about our lifeworld. In this book Jan Coetzee invites us to critically inquire into the aims, the content, and the context of the stories contained in a collection of old books from an old world. Without opening these old texts and without converting the original print on the pages to meaning and message, Coetzee brings the books into a dialogue with each other. Together with accompanying sculpted and/or found objects these books take on a new, broader function. By gathering them in one volume they attain a different character and tell us more than what the individual books ever could

Abstract: This chapter sketches some key developments in the framing of youth and early adulthood as life course stages, and situates the influence of the recent economic recession with reference to longer-term trends including increased social inequality. The authors explore different aspects of youth and early adulthood as these relate to labour market and family transitions and inter-generational relationships. These are illustrated by developments across the European nations represented in the book, specifically Norway, the UK, Germany, Greece, Portugal and Italy. The authors discuss the theoretical foundations of youth studies and life course research and set the context for the collection as well as framing the chapters in the book

Abstract: Today's society appears increasingly vulnerable, uncertain, complex and ambiguous. In this context, there is an increased need to create efficient and effective ecosystems to locally promote the quality of life and social innovation. The volume offers an excursus of the main innovative practices and policies used within urban development. Each essay explores an area of interest (quality of life, social innovation and sharing economy, smart city, urban mobility, new workplaces, shared living, eHealth, urban security, youth and tourism, food policy, didactic innovation and shared administration) offering a reference overview for the study, design and implementation of new intervention strategies and public policies. This text is aimed at students, teachers and operators working in different positions within the social sectors

Abstract: "This book is available as open access through the Bloomsbury Open programme and is available on www.bloomsburycollections.com. This book examines the trajectory and development of the Japanese religious movement Agonshu and its charismatic founder Kiriyama Seiyu. Based on field research spanning 30 years, it examines Agonshu from when it first captured attention in the 1980s with its spectacular rituals and use of media technologies, through its period of stagnation to its response to the death of its founder in 2016. The authors discuss the significance of charismatic leadership, the 'democratisation' of practice and the demands made by movements such as Agonshu on members, while examining how the movement became increasingly focused on revisionist nationalism and issues of Japanese identity. In examining the dilemma that religions commonly face on the deaths of charismatic founders, Erica Baffelli and Ian Reader look at Agonshu's response to Kiriyama's death, looking at how and why it has transformed a human founder into a figure of worship. By examining Agonshu in the wider context, the authors critically examine the concept of 'new religions'. They draw attention to the importance of understanding the trajectories of 'new' religions and how they can become 'old' even within their first generation

Abstract: Issues of migration, environment, rurality, and the visceral "politics of place" and "space" have occupied center stage in recent electoral political struggles in the United States and Europe, suffused by an antiglobalization discourse that has come to resonate with Euro-American peoples. Race and Rurality in the Global Economy suggests that this present fractious global politics begs for closer attention to be paid to the deep-rooted conditions and outcomes of globalization and development. From multiple viewpoints the contributors to this volume propose ways of understanding the ongoing processes of globalization that configure peoples and places via a politics of rurality in a capitalist world economy, and through an optics of raciality that intersects with class, gender, identity, land, and environment. In tackling the dynamics of space and place, their essays address matters such as the heightened risks and multiple states of insecurity in the global economy; the new logics of expulsion and primitive accumulation dynamics shaping a new "savage sorting"; patterns of resistance and transformation in the face of globalization's political and environmental changes; the steady decline in the livelihoods of people of color globally and their deepened vulnerabilities; and the complex reconstitution of systemic and lived racialization within these processes. This book is an invitation to ask whether our dystopia in present politics can be disentangled from the deepening sense of "white fragility" in the context of the historical power of globalization's raced effects

Abstract: The Sociology of Knowledge Approach to Discourse (SKAD) has reoriented research into social forms, structuration and processes of meaning construction and reality formation; doing so by linking social constructivist and pragmatist approaches with post-structuralist thinking in order to study discourses and create epistemological space for analysing processes of world-making in culturally diverse environments. SKAD is anchored in interpretive traditions of inquiry and allows for broadening - and possibly overcoming - of the epistemological biases and restrictions still common in theories and approaches of Western- and Northern-centric social sciences. An innovative volume, this book is exactly attentive to these empirically based, globally diverse further developments of approach, with a clear focus on the methodology and its implementation. Thus, The Sociology of Knowledge Approach to Discourse presents itself as a research program and locates the approach within the context of interpretive social sciences, followed by eleven chapters on different cases from around the world that highlight certain theoretical questions and methodological challenges. Presenting outstanding applications of the Sociology of Knowledge Approach to Discourse across a wide variety of substantive projects and regional contexts, this text will appeal to postgraduate students and researchers interested in fields such as Discourse Studies, Sociology, Cultural Studies and Qualitative Methodology and Methods

Abstract: This volume collects a series of writings by Renzo Rastrelli (1948-2008), a long-time professor of Political and diplomatic history of East Asia at the Faculty of Political Sciences "Cesare Alfieri" of the University of Florence. This textual anthology highlights some of the main aspects of the author's scientific work: the analysis on Chinese immigration to Italy, going beyond common stereotypes; the internal dynamics regarding the associative modalities and the forms of dialogue which the Chinese communities have with Italian society; finally, the broader social context which Chinese immigrants find themselves in, drawing attention to the interlacement of restrictive immigration regulations and the facilitation of illegal practices, involving both Chinese and Italian citizens

Abstract: Long-running trends towards increasing inequality between the rich and poor across Europe have been exacerbated by the 2008 global financial crisis and its aftermath. As employment opportunities for young people diminish and as the welfare state is pulled back, pathways to adulthood change and become more difficult to navigate.Transitions to Adulthood Through Recession consists of a collection of papers by researchers from Britain, Norway, Germany, Portugal, Italy and Greece, locating young people's transitions to adulthood in their national social, economic and political contexts. It explores young adulthood with reference to generational continuity and change and intergenerational support. With a cross-national comparative framework, this volume highlights the importance of variations in structural contexts for young people's transitions. Bringing together authors across sub-disciplines such as the sociology of youth, family and kinship, class and inequality and life-course studies, Transitions to Adulthood Through Recession will appeal to academic social scientists as well as final-year undergraduate and postgraduate students interested in fields such as political science, sociology, youth studies, social policy, anthropology and psychology; and a wider public readership

Abstract: For the first time, this book provides insight into the inclusion of people with migrant backgrounds into the party politics of the German Social Democratic Party (SPD) and the French Socialist Party.

Abstract: The main focus of the book is institutional change in the Scandinavian model, with special emphasis on Norway. There are many reasons to pay closer attention to the Norwegian case when it comes to analyses of changes in the public sphere. In the country's political history, the arts and the media played a particular role in the processes towards sovereignty at the beginning of the 20th century. On a par with the other Scandinavian countries, Norway is in the forefront in the world in the distribution and uses of Internet technology. As an extreme case, the most corporatist society within the family of the "Nordic Model", it offers an opportunity both for intriguing case studies and for challenging and refining existing theory on processes of institutional change in media policy and cultural policy. It supplements two recent, important books on political economy in Scandinavia: Varieties of Liberalization and the New Politics of Social Solidarity (Kathleen Thelen, 2014), and The Political Construction of Business Interests (Cathie Jo Martin and Duane Swank, 2013). There are further reasons to pay particular attention to the Scandinavian, and more specifically the Norwegian cases: (i) They are to varying degrees neo-corporatist societies, characterized by ongoing bargaining over social and political reform processes. From a theoretical perspective this invites reflections which, to some extent, are at odds with the dominant conceptions of institutional change. Neither models of path dependency nor models of aggregate, incremental change focus on the continuous social bargaining over institutional change. (ii) Despite recent processes of liberalization, common to the Western world as a whole, corporatism implies a close connection between state, public sphere, cultural life, and religion. This also means that institutions are closely bundled, in an even stronger way than assumed for example in the Varieties of Capitalism literature. Furthermore, we only have scarce insight in the way the different spheres of corporatism are connected and interact. In the proposed edited volume we have collected historical-institutional case studies from a broad set of social fields (a detailed outline of contents and contributors is attached): Critical assessments of Jürgen Habermas' theory of the public sphere Can the public sphere be considered an institution? The central position of the public sphere in social and political change in Norway Digital transformations and effects of the growing PR industry on the public sphere Institutionalization of social media in local politics and voluntary organizations Legitimation work in the public sphere freedom of expression and warning in the workplace "Return of religion" to the public sphere, and its effects

Abstract: Have you ever wondered what makes storytelling and digital media a powerful combination? This edited volume examines the opportunities to think, do, and/or create jointly afforded by digital storytelling. The editors of this volume contend that digital storytelling and digital media can create spaces of empowerment and transformation by facilitating multiple kinds of border crossings and convergences involving groups of peoples, places, knowledge, methodologies, and teaching pedagogies. The book is unique in its inclusion of anthropologists and education practitioners and its emphasis on multiple subfields in anthropology. The contributors discuss digital storytelling in the context of educational programs, teaching anthropology, and ethnographic research involving a variety of populations and subjects that will appeal to researchers and practitioners engaged with qualitative methods and pedagogies that rely on media technology

Abstract: This book provides a survey of different ways in which economic sociocultural and political aspects of human progress have been studied since the time of Adam Smith. Inevitably, over such a long time span, it has been necessary to concentrate on highlighting the most significant contributions, rather than attempting an exhaustive treatment. The aim has been to bring into focus an outline of the main long-term changes in the way that socioeconomic development has been envisaged. The argument presented is that the idea of socioeconomic development emerged with the creation of grand evolutionary sequences of social progress that were the products of Enlightenment and mid-Victorian thinkers. By the middle of the twentieth century, when interest in the accelerating development gave the topic a new impetus, its scope narrowed to a set of economically based strategies. After 1960, however, faith in such strategies began to wane, in the face of indifferent results and general faltering of confidence in economists’ boasts of scientific expertise. In the twenty-first century, development research is being pursued using a research method that generates disconnected results. As a result, it seems unlikely that any grand narrative will be created in the future and that neo-liberalism will be the last of this particular kind of socioeconomic theory

Abstract: After the Second World War, the economies of advanced Countries have long been characterized by inclusive economic growth. In recent decades, on the other hand, there has been a steady increase in inequalities and a worsening for low-income social groups. What is the possibility of rebuilding a more inclusive development like that of the post-war three decades? Is it a viable road? And under what conditions? Or should we instead speculate that divorce is inevitable between economic growth and social cohesion in advanced democracies? There is no sure answer to this question, but it can be a good exercise, especially for those who believe that inclusive development is an essential component of the quality and stability of democracies, asking themselves under what conditions we can try to pursue this goal. The path proposed in this text focuses, in a comparative key, on the significant differences in the forms of economic and social regulation between the various advanced democracies that are reflected in more or less inclusive development paths and models of capitalism. Why have some countries managed to better defend the conditions for inclusive development over the past three decades? Through which economic and social regulatory choices? Moreover, another overlooked question is worth asking. How has politics created consensus around these choices and made them possible, while in other contexts it has supported growth accompanied by greater inequalities? What is certain is that giving up the goal of finding a more satisfactory balance between economic growth and social cohesion not only jeopardizes economic development, but also weakens and impoverishes democratic institutions

Abstract: The volumes on World War I which are published here are the result of a series of seminars held at the Department of Political and Social Sciences of the University of Florence between 2014 and 2015. Starting from the occasion of the war's 100th anniversary, the authors wished to take stock of some specific aspects of the studies related to World War I. Historians, military analysts, political scientists and sociologists have also questioned the meaning of the fracture which inaugurated the 20th century and, consequently, the basic features of the new policy of the 'short century', in both an Italian and European perspective

Abstract: Crisis, malaise and social fragmentation are recurring themes in the representation of the middle classes. The volume, based on the results of an investigation into the forensic profession carried out with the contribution of the Bar Council of Florence, delves into the issue by placing itself in a line of studies that has recently regained vigour within the Italian and international sociological debate. By touching on a plurality of themes and using mixed investigation methods, the research has allowed the authors to verify how different employment situations translate into an unequal distribution of life chances and into different attitudes towards profession, politics and social life, allowing also to explore the role played by lawyers in change processes

Abstract: The volume presents the thesis of the social roots of the European crisis, supported by an empirical analysis that highlights the extent to which the inequality between EU citizens, which grew with the 2008 recession, determines the ideas of Europe circulating among Europeans, helping to influence their sense of belonging. The work develops an original theoretical approach that is experimented in the field through a study that shows, on the one hand, the boundless narrative heritage and the different identity forms that characterize Europe; on the other, the main factors that influence them: the experiences, the socio-economic and cultural characteristics of the individual and the context, the use of the media and the role played by the institutions on the territory

Abstract: The service covered by an obligation corresponds, in the definition offered by the law (art. 1174 of the Italian civil code), to an interest of the creditor. What happens if this interest, in the context of a contractual relationship, can no longer be satisfied due to unforeseen causes not attributable to the parties? The jurisprudence affirms that when an interest is objectively functional and necessary for the realization of the contractual program, its infringement can lead to the cancellation of the legal bond. However, what are the exact legal consequences of such cancellation, and what are its forms? This is the essential content of this work, aimed at investigating the foundation and content of the extra-legislative category of the unexpected unusability of a service

Abstract: The 2017 SIS Conference aims to highlight the crucial role of the Statistics in Data Science. In this new domain of 'meaning' extracted from the data, the increasing amount of produced and available data in databases, nowadays, has brought new challenges. That involves different fields of statistics, machine learning, information and computer science, optimization, pattern recognition. These afford together a considerable contribute in the analysis of 'Big data', open data, relational and complex data, structured and no-structured. The interest is to collect the contributes which provide from the different domains of Statistics, in the high dimensional data quality validation, sampling extraction, dimensional reduction, pattern selection, data modelling, testing hypotheses and confirming conclusions drawn from the data
