Abstract: As scattered pieces of a composite artistic path to be reassembled, the personal notes, writing tests, private letters and reviews kept by Giuseppe Dessí over the years allow Nicola Turi, who had already been following the author's footsteps for some time, to reconstruct the sources of inspiration, the composition and revision processes, as well as the main stages of the critical reception of a work crossing the best part of the 20th century in Italy with an elegant gait which constantly brings it in on the same level as the great European models: a philosophical background which is always up to date, and the very fine sensitivity of someone who knows how to grasp the imperceptible movements of the human soul and the great changes of history at the same time. This volume is the result of a long archival work and, also by virtue of the bibliography (by and on the author) placed in the appendix, it aims at functioning as a journey through Dessí's texts and, at the same time, at offering the readers the necessary hermeneutical support to understand his works

Abstract: The theme of "citizenship" has become very topical once again. Who should be considered a citizen? What does it mean to be a citizen? What are the mechanisms regulating inclusion and exclusion from citizenship? How can these mechanisms be justified and criticized? Using a multidisciplinary approach, the volume presents some studies on citizenship, moving across political science, case-law and social sciences. The aim of the volume is to reconstruct the debate, with references to empirical cases, and, on the basis of conceptual analysis, to enable a discussion on the main models of citizenship and on the different forms they have taken on in history. The suggested functional theory provides a tool to establish whether the attribution of the said status is justified or not

Abstract: The volume examines the crucial and current connection between orientation, training and teaching professionalism. The various contributions make references to the new regulation on the subject, and focus on the institutional task and the pedagogical role played by orientation and training in creating a new physiognomy of the teachers' professionalism: an initial orientation, an in itinere orientation and an outgoing orientation, alongside personal and professional training, intended as an open and ongoing process. These are two fundamental devices to grasp the complexity of being a teacher and working in schools nowadays. They are also accompanied by the traineeship, which in this context is examined through the report of a multi-year work

Abstract: The book goes over the studies carried out on the circadian oscillators in plants, performed using the model plant Arabidopsis thaliana. The plant's oscillators seem to include similar components to those described for other model organisms. A bioinformatic analysis on the Arabidopsis genome found the genes TAF12b, At1g17440 and UVR3, At3g15620. Both the genes were cloned with the GFP green fluorescent protein in order to locate this protein at cell level. Furthermore, Arabidopsis SALK line plants were grown and selected, mutating the genes in question, and in parallel gene expression tests were performed on the main circadian rhythm genes in order to monitor their expression both in conditions of alternating light and dark, and in constant conditions. From the data that has emerged to date it seems that both genes are involved in the Arabidopsis's circadian rhythms

Abstract: In 1911, the Nobel Prize for Chemistry was awarded to Marie Curie, eight years after she had received the Nobel Prize for Physics. An extraordinary scientific adventure ended, and the deification of an iconic character and symbol of the amazing transformations of costume which would characterize the following decades began to take root. During the transfer of the Curies' remains to the Pantheon, Pierre Gilles de Gennes wanted to underline Marie's "beauty of self-denial". The Christmas Lecture pays tribute to the dual inheritance which she left us: the strength of scientific rationality against the obscurantism of beliefs and gender equality. The conference traces the most relevant aspects of Marie Curie's life, sharing her extraordinary scientific discoveries, but also underlining socio-cultural and customary aspects and highlighting the historical context of an era which was tumultuously changing

Abstract: Jorge Eduardo Eielson (Lima 1924 - Milan 2006) and Mario Vargas Llosa (Arequipa, Peru, 1936; Winner of the Nobel prize in 2010) are certainly two 'exemplary Peruvians', as they have both started by digging into the history and social conflicts of their country, before opening up to global culture and reality with an interdisciplinary and intercultural spirit: Vargas Llosa did so using fiction, theatre, non-fiction and journalism; Eielson used poetry, the visual arts, non-fiction and journalism. The volume offers a rich itinerary starting from an interview with Vargas Llosa by José Miguel Oviedo (Florence, 2008), and then goes through individual aspects of the work by the two authors. It is then accompanied by photographic records and a DVD with an elaboration of Eielson's visual works, paintings and poems

Abstract: One hundred have passed, and the journey continues. This work was created by a group of professors of the (former) Faculty of Agriculture of the University of Florence, and has the sole purpose of telling, through a few significant subjects, about the first one hundred years (1913-2013) of an institution which, thanks to its researchers, technicians and administrative department, has contributed as one to the advancement of knowledge in the Agricultural Sciences and, in the local area, to the success of the agri-food sector in Tuscany. However, the real protagonists of this work are not only the Teachers of the School of Agricultural and Forestry Sciences of the University of Florence, but also the thousands of students who, over a century, have attended the National Forestry Institute first, and then the Faculty, and who have brought the fruits of the teachings they received in Florence to Italy and to the whole world

Abstract: In the first pages of the Zibaldone, Leopardi had noted that the "love of learning" induces a passion for philosophy, making it a foundational element of modern culture. In this perspective, then, no doubt remains as to the prominent position of Voltaire's Candide, or of Rousseau's thought, which combines philosophical thinking, educational demands, political passion and autobiography. However, in order to move from the count to the novel, from the apologue and from the treatises to complex characters who also maintain a strong and speculative allure, one had to leave the 18th century, experience Romanticism, feed the rêveries of the new promeneurs solitaires during the following century, with the restlessness and the questions of Dostoevsky, Kafka, Sartre, Camus, and of Pirandello, Proust, Musil and many others; of those who combined the passion for short stories with the unmasking of any deceptive theodicy. Bringing the the novel back to bourgeois intertwining and existential anxieties, starting from Cervantes's ironic way of thinking. In the absence of declarations, however, where does one find the evidence of the presence of the philosophique in the novel, or how does one identify texts pertaining to the definition of roman philosophique? This book, conceived and edited by Anna Dolfi, does not only raises the problem, but tries to solve it as well. At the same time, it brings the ideas of the novel and from the novel together with constructive theories, and compares the insignificant with significance, mythical emblems and codes, semiosis and destiny, while also observing how language, in the parade of the authors, changes itself and even touches the figurativeness of the graphic-novel. This volume constitutes the final point of arrival of a path which, in samples, locks significant fragments in the otherwise infinite kaleidoscope of narration

Abstract: In a time, ours, in which historiography prefers to measure itself with witchcraft as a judicial phenomenon, or with the men who personally led the persecution, or even with the demonological treatises that greatly influenced witch hunters, this book focuses instead on the victims. Women accused of witchcraft are the protagonists of the trials initiated between the late Middle Ages and the early modern age: that was the time when the great witch hunt was unleashed in Europe. The profiles of the alleged witches, even if drawn by their judges, emerge from these pages in all their changeability and drama: women that are reluctant to plead guilty to unspoken crimes, marked by stubborn silence, surrendered to the full confession of every wickedness extorted by torture

Abstract: In many European regions, rural areas are facing major challenges in economic and social terms, consequence of transformations in the role and meaning of agriculture. The loss of the productive character strongly contributed to the emergence of new roles and functions, particularly related to leisure and tourism. The book aims to discuss questions directly related to the connections between rural tourism and local socioeconomic contexts, presenting diverse theoretical and methodological perspectives and diff erent case studies from various European regions. The book addresses the relationships among rural tourism and the complex interactions, confl icts and innovative processes developing in rural territories as consequence of the implementation of tourism activities. The book responds to some relevant and not yet comprehensively researched aspects within this topic, especially in what extent tourism, in its various forms and processes, might give an important contribution to rural development

Abstract: With the 100th anniversary of Giuseppe Dessí's birth approaching, in 2009, the Committee in charge of the celebrations launched in a widespread dissemination activity of the writer's work in many European countries. And since the translations (the main objective of the project) required a complex knowledge of the author, his style, the dialogue and the difference with the reference culture, it was suggested to study and promote them not only through the reconstruction of the history and typicality of the author's narrative path, but also through the reconstruction of his scarce reception abroad within the framework, in the case of Dessí, of the presence, outside national borders, of Italian literature in the second half of the 20th century. Through the examination of books, editorial catalogues, magazines, anthologies, and thanks to the commitment of scholars and young collaborators of Italian and foreign universities, it is now France, England, Spain, Germany, the Netherlands, Poland, Hungary, Ukraine, Finland, Sweden and many more at the centre of the attention, with their reading preferences and aversions, together with Italy, and with the themes, stories, characters of the writer to whom this book is dedicated

Abstract: The volume aims at offering an overview of the studies on the flâneur. It consists of three parts and an appendix. The first part defines the figure of the flâneur. In particular, the flâneur's characteristics are first analysed with respect to a series of oxymorons, to then be declined in relation to some themes, namely: the flâneur's slowness as a combined expression of body and mind, the moods of living one's condition, the birth of the flâneuse, the relationship between the flâneur and other figures at opposite ends of the social ladder, the love and hate between the flâneur and tourists, the constraints imposed on the flâneur in the society of control and, finally, flânerie as a lifestyle. In the second part, the focus shifts to urban places as privileged contexts of action and reflection for the flâneur. In particular, the discussed topics are the "genius loci", the possibility of analysing places through the forms of reverie which undermine the recurrent images marked by accredited methodologies, and finally the inevitably individual in-depth study paths leading to flânerie, which require a more direct contribution than the one given by subjects who practice it. Specific attention is paid to flânerie as the inspection carried out by architects and urban planners, with the additional aim of designing the urban territory for the involvement of the entire community. The third part is dedicated to an illustration of the various ways a flânerie can be achieved. Various types of flânerie are identified and described: from the free itinerant one, to the shadowing and the observation from a fixed place. In this part, there are also some reflections regarding the relationship between flâneur, houses and objects, as well as some final considerations on the development prospects of research on the flâneur himself. Finally, in the appendix, there is a discussion on the protocol in use to create some flâneries with students from different departments and from different Italian universities, followed by some concrete examples of flânerie in compliance with the definition given in the third part

Abstract: A private and distant Sardinia animates the texts of this double correspondence, between archaic landscapes and personal and literary mythologies, in which Ferrara, the town of the authors' youthful years, is occasionally mentioned, with its richness of life, magazines (Bottai's «Primato», «Corriere Padano» with Bassani...), evening meetings in taverns or rented rooms, walks along the Rampari river, and the use of playful nicknames which would continue even after youth ended. A world made of concrete things, animated and enlivened by strong intellectual curiosities and passions, emerges from the letters reconstructing the life and history of Giuseppe Dessí, Mario Pinna and Claudio Varese, which have been carefully transcribed and annotated by Costanza Chimirri. The correspondence opens with the years spent in Ferrara - after Pisa, a crucial moment for their education - and allows the author to reconstruct atmospheres and environments, readings and work, offering a significant cross-section of twentieth-century Italy from within. The letters are never disconnected from one another, but rather united by the continuous call to the triple friendship in the name of Giuseppe Dessí, who is always present in the others' speeches even when he is not actually mentioned. The correspondence also allowed to bring to light unpublished texts by the most secluded member of the group (Mario Pinna, an avid reader of the classics, Spanish specialist, author of poems in the dialect of Logudoro and of short stories set in Sardinia), to strengthen the role that has always been played by the eldest, Claudio Varese, the maître-camarade; and to confirm once again how much Dessí's creative universe, deeply marked by the biographical element, has continued to develop and feed under the wise and affectionate gaze of fraternal friends, in an exchange which can give life to an actual collective imagination

Abstract: This report contains the scientific results of the research project co-funded by Regione Toscana entitled "La multifunzionalità dell'agricoltura nelle zone montane marginali: una valutazione qualitativa, quantitativa e monetaria degli impatti ambientali, economici e sociali". The project involved various partners, whose skills enabled the activity to take an integrated, multi-disciplinary bent; the University of Florence Department of Farming and Forestry Economics, Engineering, Science and Technology - DEISTAF - took responsibility for the scientific side, while the local partners counted the municipality of San Godenzo, L'Unione dei Comuni della Montagna Fiorentina and the Consorzio Marrone del Mugello IGP. The general aim of the whole research project was to prepare guidelines for the endogenous and sustainable development of outlying areas, while extending knowledge of a fundamental aspect of farming, the primary activity, namely its multiple functions

Abstract: The initial idea for this volume was born while rethinking the organisation of the University of Florence following the recent reform, with the aim of retracing the evolution of the Faculty of Engineering throughout its 40 years, telling and documenting its history, collecting memories and documents from a period characterised by significant changes. The research carried out by the curators and many colleagues has progressively broadened the horizon of the work to collect not only the contents of the academic history but also those of the "civil" history of the Faculty, observing its laborious growth, affirmation and consolidation in the Florentine University, and also noting the relationships with the social and economic context (the city, the region, the national and international involvement) that surrounds a significant collective entity such as "our" Faculty of Engineering. This made it possible to explore and document relevant areas that are fundamental for a non-trivial knowledge of how many actors have crossed the scenario of the Faculty and of which phenomena the Faculty itself has been an observer and protagonist. Thus, the work has been enriched with a great number of contents, declined in each chapter with pleasant energy and that are difficult to summarise in a purely historical or celebratory paradigm. If we try and visualise the readers of this volume, we think of those who will find there the path of their life, who will there find the roots of the present and who will want to discover the reasons for the future

Abstract: This volume collects the contributions to the 73rd Congress of the Italian Zoological Union, held in Florence in September 2012, and organised together with the "Leo Pardi" Department of Evolutionary Biology. The Congress, to which many zoologists, comparative anatomists, reproductive biologists, ethologists and ecologists participated, opened with a plenary reading by Marlene Zuk, from the University of Minnesota, entitled "Mate choice and thinkering with evolution". The Congress was then divided into four symposia: I "From sexual strategies to social behaviour (in honour of Tullia Zetto)"; II "Use of space, orientation and migration (in honour of Guido Tosi)"; III "Endocrine destroyers"; IV "Allochthonous species". The Symposia were enriched by the reports made upon request by Paolo Luschi, Gian Carlo Panzica and Piero Genovesi

Abstract: It is a Sardinia out of time, on the threshold of history, the one emerging from the pages of Giuseppe Dessí's novels and short stories. But it is also a living Sardinia, full of the contradictions occurring in the landscape and in the vicissitudes of men. The profound relationship which bound Dessí to his land, nourishing his fiction, non-fiction and intellectual works, stands out noticeably in the correspondence collected in this volume. The unpublished letters, found in four different Italian archives, were transcribed and duly annotated by Giulio Vannucci. They tell about the birth and composition of a 1951 special issue of Pietro Calamandrei's «Il Ponte» dedicated to Sardinia, and reconstruct the genesis of the splendid anthology «Scoperta della Sardegna», issued in 1965 by Alberto Vigevani's publisher «Il Polifilo». In those two extraordinary books, the writer left the narrating voice to others for once. Within them, he built a different choral story of the island not only through the words of friends, but also through those of scholars, historians, politicians and many more. In the case of «Il Ponte», Dessí put himself at Calamandrei's service to find suitable collaborators and talk about post World War Two Sardinia, while choosing researchers who could trace a new and original guide for the cultural discovery of the island for «Il Polifilo». The correspondence goes over all of this, but also over culture in the Sixties and the dialogues and intellectual tensions accompanying Dessí in the writing of two works which, thanks to their anthropological and social acuity, still tell the modern reader of a 'vital home' that was his

Abstract: COST Action 734 was launched thanks to the coordinated activity of 29 EU countries. The main objective of the Action was the evaluation of impacts from climate change and variability on agriculture for various European areas. Secondary objectives were: collection and review of existing agroclimatic indices and simulation models, to assess hazard impacts on European agricultural areas; to apply climate scenarios for the next few decades; the definition of harmonised criteria to evaluate the impacts of climate change and variability on agriculture; the definition of warning systems guidelines. Based on the result, possible actions (specific recommendations, suggestions, warning systems) were elaborated and proposed to the end-users, depending on their needs

Abstract: This book brings together the materials of a study carried out by the Florence Faculty of Architecture in liaison with the Tuscan scientific community (five universities, research institutes and technicians from the Regional Authority) to define the methods and approaches of the new Landscape Plan. The aim was to exploit the opportunities offered by recent legislation, such as the European Landscape Convention and the Cultural Heritage and Landscape Code, in order to formulate public policies and projects designed to enhance the quality of life throughout the entire territory, both valuable and degraded. Different skills, aptitudes and passions have come together in the hope that the recent phase of planning can trigger mechanisms that stimulate the inhabitants of Tuscany to continue to produce the collective work of art that is their landscape, in the exquisitely normal manner and form that left scholars such Desplanques pleasantly perplexed when he wrote: «These people have constructed their rural landscapes as if they had no concern other than beauty.»

Abstract: The novelties brought in by the legislature on the Italian vote abroad marked a turning point both for Italian politics, with the introduction of foreign representation, and for the communities of Italians abroad. But what opinion do our expatriate co-nationals have of the Italian vote? And has voting from abroad brought our global co-nationals closer (or not) to Italian politics, Italy and/or their Italian heritage? And then, who are the Italians in the world? How many are there and where are they concentrated? This book offers an up-to-date reading of the experiences of the Italian vote in the world from 2003 to date, analysis of the results of a survey into the participation of Italians abroad in the 2006 political elections, as well as cues, reflections and considerations on the topic of Italian emigration and the Italian vote abroad

Abstract: (Good) government of the consumption of the territory is now one of the most difficult challenges facing planning and all the other sciences that contribute to the design of effective urban and territorial policies. With a view to contributing to debate on such issues, the authors reflect on the new forms of public decision-making, on the potential of territorial equalisation and on other sizing mechanisms, with reference both to the areas under transformation and the consolidated urban contexts. Based on an in-depth investigation of regeneration, requalification and densification projects for urban areas or metropolitan regions in Italy, Europe or the rest of the world, the text suggests various strategies for intervention with reference to the Tuscan case

Abstract: The 2002 Nobel Prize to Imre Kertész is a symptom: Hungary is now weltliterarisch. The historical process - which has seen Hungarian writers working since the 1970s to gain ontological autonomy for their field, to write in a language that is not mendacious, to go beyond the 'modern' of real socialism to a 'postmodern' in which reality is not "described", but "employed", and to anthropic ends - is at a standstill, it is greeted abroad as a common heritage. According to Ungheria 1945-2002. La dimensione letteraria - which concludes a prolonged period of analytical work (see Scrivere postmoderno in Ungheria, 1995, and Scrittori ungheresi allo specchio, 2003) - the Hungarian contribution to the contemporary era lies in its sense for this anthropic function of literature (even though the context now seems to want to thwart this effort)

Abstract: The book aims to study the relationship between the contractual instrument and succession law, in order to identify the categories into which the general device of the succession contract currently seems to be divided. The book starts from an analysis of the 'bans' on succession settlements as per art. 458 of the Italian Civil Code, before going on to examine the categories of 'alternative instruments to wills' and 'exceptionally admitted mortis causa deeds (other than wills)' (that is, the first two forms taken on by the wide-ranging genus of contracts for the purpose of succession). Then it deals with the institution of the 'family settlement' (articles 768-bis of the Italian Civil Code), a device which can be traced back to the phenomenon of 'anticipated succession' (constituting the 'third form' of contracts for the purpose of succession). Having clarified the regulations as well as giving a systematic outline of the institution, the analysis then concentrates on the relationship between the aforesaid contract and the sphere of 'necessary succession'. The concluding part of the book contains an outline of a set of applicative models for the category of anticipated succession; additional innovative models distinct from the current formulation in articles 768-bis et seq. of the Italian Civil Code, which therefore enable the interpreter to make out, from a de jure condendo perspective, the possible lines of development both of contracts for the purpose of succession and for necessary succession

Abstract: Despite the indisputable richness of the Montalian bibliography, there still was no comment on a fundamental collection such as La bufera e altro, published, after a complex and protracted gestation, by Neri Pozza in 1956. The aim of this book is to fill that void, giving a first contribution to the exegesis of one of Montale's densest - and most difficult - works, where the poet draws the conclusions of a long research to restart his own inexhaustible search for new languages and imagery. Between preliminary introductions (proper essays) and notes, she tries to take stock of the matter by comparing the various existing critical hypotheses and proposing - in a close hand-to-hand with the text, verse by verse, problematising rather than glossing over - an original interpretative line

Abstract: Literary trompe-l'oeil intends to emancipate the enigmatic and distinctive figure of Hauff from his long and unjust marginalization resulting from a now outdated current of criticism, to offer a new interpretation of his Märchen for a general rereading of this modern literary caricaturist's works. On approaching his texts, one cannot but notice how they are imbued with continual and insistent, bewitching, caustic and alienating allusions, just like the Mona Lisa's smile. With a constant critical scepticism and a subtle illusionist skill, this demythologized 'budding Satan' looks at the present situation through the 'diabolic lenses' of irony, making his works a sort of literary Befreiungskrieg, in which he lays claim to a heterotopic space of free fantastic-humorist expression, along the undulating route leading from Sterne to Heine via Jean Paul

Abstract: Corollary of the doctrine of the separation of powers and pillar of the rule of law, the principle of the independence of the judiciary is of great importance, especially in the Western legal tradition. Her analysis, focused on China, cannot be separated from an understanding of the reality in which it must be applied, from the knowledge of the legal class, the relations between the powers of the state and the history of the Communist Party. The purpose of this work is therefore to define the independence and professionalism of the Chinese judge at a regulatory level, framing the two concepts in a historical context and with comparisons with Western dynamics in order to recover the ultimate purpose of the judicial function: the impartiality of the decision

Abstract: Pantaleoni and Pareto re-established economic theory on the basis of homo oeconomicus which, despite criticisms, went on to become a strangely popular concept, not only among economists, but even in common parlance, where it has assumed a confusing variety of meanings. With a view to setting things in order, this book distinguishes: the methodological hypotheses, which could possibly be corrected on the basis of new economic psychology; the weak anthropologies, retrievable as 'given abstractions' within typical contexts; and finally the extreme versions, that reduce human nature to absolute egoism. The author makes a radical criticism of the latter, drawing upon the extensive tools derived from psychology, philosophical anthropology and political philosophy, and thus succeeds in demonstrating their lack of empirical foundation, their conceptual inconsistency and their ideological dangerousness

Abstract: This work intends to make a theoretical critique of naturalization, not in the name of transcendental idealism, but in that of a new phenomenology of complexity, while seeking its essential concepts. In this, the crisis of the sciences, the tendency to forget subjective experience and the human world in the broad sense, is traced back, not to the inability to go beyond the level of natural-objective knowledge towards a transcendental fundament, but to the inability to remain there and explore the multiple organizational levels of what is given in it. In this perspective, investigating consciousness as a set of real states and acts within an objective world that exists and has its structures must lead, not to the reduction of subjective experience, but to the complexification of reality. The theoretical critique of naturalization is carried out as part of a genealogical analysis, making it emerge as a tool of biopower, a discursive practice with a performative nature, whose result, perfectly suited to late cognitive capitalism, is to produce that same naturalized subjectivity which it theoretically enunciates

Abstract: The Museum of Natural History of the University of Florence, founded in 1775 by Grand Duke Pietro Leopoldo d'Asburgo Lorena, is one of the oldest and most prestigious scientific museums in the world. The fourth volume on the Collections of the Mineralogy and Lithology Section, published like the previous volumes by the Firenze University Press, fits perfectly in the series dedicated to the collections of the University's Museum System. The first part of the book describes in great detail the paths that led to the formation of the collections, starting with those dating to the Medici period and arriving at the specimens collected during recent expeditions. The second part illustrates and documents the extraordinary specimens of minerals, hardstone carvings and meteorites which represent the material patrimony of this section. Particular attention is given to the holotypes, the Elban Collection and the minerals of pegmatites, as well as the methods and solutions adopted to realize the project of the new museum exhibition set-up. The third and last part describes the studies carried out on the materials: from the minerals of the systematic collections to the rock specimens that recount not only the geodiversity of a region but also the history of a city

Abstract: The central theme of this book is ecological and territorialist conversion as a strategic response to the crisis. 'The return to the territory' can be conceived as a valorisation of the common heritage of assets (environmental, urban fabric, landscape, socio-cultural) that mould the identity and lifestyles of every place on the earth. This calls for several issues to be addressed: the fusing of fragmented knowledge into a science of the territory that addresses the problems of socio-territorial and environmental decay in an integrated manner; the definition of new markers and policies of public welfare and happiness, including the landscape as a measure of the quality of peoples' life-worlds; the boosting of tools of local democracy and supportive federalism; the restoration of centrality to the rural world in the production of healthy food, hydro-geological protection measures, ecological reclamation, urban and landscape quality and integrated economies

Abstract: The controversial notion of social rights is situated at the heart of the relations between some key categories in the philosophical-juridical lexicon, such as equality, solidarity, citizenship and social state. The book sets out by dealing with their genesis towards the end of the eighteenth century, with particular attention to the lines of argument of Thomas Paine, to go on to examine their development, their juridical configuration and the criticisms levelled at them during the twentieth century, before arriving at basic income theories, namely alternative proposals going beyond social rights (and the juridical-constitutional forms in which they came into being). Hence, the question is dealt with up to the context of globalization and the complicated processes of European unification, also in order to single out ways to relaunch democracy itself 'from the bottom'. The underlying idea is that social rights are legitimately «fundamental» and «human rights» and that to be due they need two structural conditions: to be conceived of as «indivisible», «interdependent» and «interconnected» with respect to other fundamental rights (as ratified by the Vienna Declaration of 1993) and to be rooted contextually within a social and institutional space which today necessarily has to be multilevel but which, at the same time, does not leave aside the states' power of regulation and implementation

Abstract: It has been a long history of Information Technology innovations within the Cultural Heritage areas. The Performing arts has also been enforced with a number of new innovations which unveil a range of synergies and possibilities. Most of the technologies and innovations produced for digital libraries, media entertainment and education can be exploited in the field of performing arts, with adaptation and repurposing. Performing arts offer many interesting challenges and opportunities for research and innovations and exploitation of cutting edge research results from interdisciplinary areas. For these reasons, the ECLAP 2012 can be regarded as a continuation of past conferences such as AXMEDIS and WEDELMUSIC (both pressed by IEEE and FUP). ECLAP is an European Commission project to create a social network and media access service for performing arts institutions in Europe, to create the e-library of performing arts, exploiting innovative solutions coming from the ICT

Abstract: The book aims to identify the prevalent characteristics of the Tuscan landscape in the fourteenth century through the artistic and literary expressions of two of the main protagonists of the century, Giotto and Boccaccio. Emerging from a critical reading of the Decameron by Boccaccio and the paintings by Giotto is the relationship between fourteenth-century man and nature: having overcome the fear of existence, man is aware of the territory/landscape and his capacity of control over nature. This emerges in the relationship between the city and the landscape outside the walls, in the two artists' careful observation of nature, in the sense of belonging to places, in the role of open spaces, in the conditions of well-being of the environment, in the sense of protection and security; and it is also highlighted in the characteristics of the landscape, such as the sense of proximity, distance, time and aesthetics, in relation above all to gardens and the countryside. From the studies performed there emerges a curiosity that was not yet capable of expressing itself in autonomous forms, but was already appreciable in the innovative techniques heralding the next century

Abstract: This book gives an analysis of the role of the bioactive sphingolipids sphingosine-1-phosphate (S1P) and ceramide 1-phosphate (C1P) in the skeletal muscle. The enzyme that produces S1P, sphingosine kinase 1 (SK1) has proved crucial in the biological action of growth factors and cytokines involved in the inflammatory process that follows muscular damage. Indeed, in myoblasts the cytokine TGFβ exercises its fibrotic action through induction of the SK1/S1P axis. Furthermore, the PDGF growth factor, positive regulator of proliferation and motility, activates the enzyme SK1 and the transactivation of S1P1 inhibits the proliferation and induces the migration induced by the growth factor. Finally, the mitogenic role of C1P in myoblasts has been identified, characterizing the signalling pathways involved

Abstract: Karel Teige was one of the leading theorists of the Czech avant-garde, and his activity is bound up with the most enriching cultural contributions made to the Czech Republic in the first half of the twentieth century. Proclaiming himself a Marxist, he was frequently at odds with Czech liberal-pragmatic thought. The emergence of European totalitarianism coincided with a major turning-point in his life when, towards the end of the 1930s, he had to come to terms with the Nazi invasion of his country and with the local version of Stalinism. After the War he was marginalised from cultural life and he died of a heart attack while being persecuted in a ferocious campaign of defamation by the Communist Party. The book offers a portrait of this protagonist of European culture and of the process of rediscovery that in the 1960s reintegrated his work and his thought into the extraordinary cultural revival that blossomed in the Prague Spring of 1968

Abstract: Centred around the topic of dialogue, the philosophical position which Guido Calogero (1904-1986) came to hold at the beginning of the 1950s, and developed in his subsequent studies, establishes a complex relationship with the philosophical research from the years before, interested in the historical origins of the logical and gnoseological problems in ancient thought and their necessary dissolution in contemporary idealism. This work highlights how these bonds condition the formulation of the dialogic principle, despite the philosopher's intention to assert its speculative autonomy; but it also shows, at the same time, how this renewed ethical criterion enriches Calogero's position, opening it to developments that contemporary reflection can acquire and investigate further

Abstract: The stars of the correspondence of Caroline Michaelis-Böhmer-Schlegel-Schelling (1763-1809), one of the most intriguing female figures in the German Romantic movement, are the relations with and between major exponents of the German scene of Enlightenment and Revolution, Classicism and Romanticism. Framed between an introduction dealing with Caroline herself and a detailed critical apparatus, Illuminismo e Rivoluzione, Classicismo e Romanticismo. Caroline Schlegel-Schelling: «Ero seduta qui a scrivere». Lettere proposes some of the most impassioned letters from her extensive correspondence in a document that is at once biographical, artistic, historical and literary. Fifty selected letters (plus an appendix with several letters she received from Friedrich Schlegel and Novalis), in a compilation that aims to cast light on the lively critical sensitivity combined with genuine literary talent that made Caroline the heart and soul of the Romanticism of Jena

Abstract: In the current socio-cultural scenario, the implementation of the university reform aimed at boosting third-level education calls for meditation within the discipline of Architectural Technology (ICAR 12). This review must address the research topics and academic profiles of PhD courses in the Technological Area, also in terms of fostering actions consistent with European strategic lines for the promotion of a knowledge society. Research, innovation, creativity and design are the keywords of this scenario that PhD students and lecturers must bear in mind when considering three fields of study: environmental design and landscape, building production and construction and works and services strategic for the community. This book "Research among innovation, creativity and design" develops the topics addressed during the VII OSDOTTA workshop (the network of PhD courses in the field of Architectural Technology) held at the Mantua campus of Milan Polytechnic on 15th-16th-17th September 2011

Abstract: The book outlines the processes of "bureaucratization" of the financial offices of the Kingdom of Naples, dwelling on the administrative praxis of the Regia Camera della Sommaria. It starts from the critical edition of Repertorium Alphabeticum Solutionum Fiscalium Regni Siciliae, a XVIth century manuscipt produced by Sommaria, rich with information about the whole area of Southern Italy, which became particularly precious after the destruction of the Aragonese documentation of the State Archive in Naples in the fire of September 1943. The research originates in the "slow" reading of a text, in the inquiry on its characteristics, structure, sources, context, events which led to its writing and on the practices of administrative work which it was to describe and orientate. This volume reconstructs also the long process which led to the Sommaria office, between the last decades of the XIIIth century and the first of the XVth century, its competences and working from the Aragonese age, up to the middle of the XVIth centuryt, on the basis of published and unpublished sources, kept in various Italian and European archives and libraries, in a costant comparison with the wide international bibliography

Abstract: A unique political animal, the European Union has given rise to important constitutional conundrums and paradoxes that John Erik Fossum and Agustín José Menéndez explore in detail in this book. The authors consider the process of forging the EU's constitution and the set of fundamental norms that define the institutional structure, the decision-making procedures, and the foundations of the Union's democratic legitimacy. Their analysis illuminates the distinctive features of the EU's pluralist constitutional construct but also the interesting parallels to the Canadian constitutional experience and provides the tools to understand the Union's development, especially during the Laeken (2001-2005) and Lisbon (2007-2009) processes of constitutional reform

Abstract: In our age now deprived of the traditional metaphysical certainties, to study the moral dimension of subjectivity in Hegel's The Phenomenology of Spirit is to make one's object of investigation that which is one of the themes of greatest philosophical interest, precisely owing to its great topicality. Hegel deals with the moral issue in a particularly profound manner, aware both of the contradictory and dramatic aspects of that experience and of the centrality of the motif of the «beyond». On the basis of this interpretative thesis, the analyses of Hegel's text made in this research are devoted to focussing on the experiences of the subject's constitution and legitimization together with the unexpected consequences deriving from the problematic relationship that the consciousness establishes with the self-sufficient immobility of substance. The result is a historiographical and theoretical study that slots effectively into the contemporary debate on the great topicality of Hegel's thought

Abstract: The investigation into the living being and sensation conducted by Aristotle in De Anima and his biological works highlight many theoretical correspondences with Merleau-Ponty's notion of perception and the ontology of the sensible emerging from the Phenomenology of Perception and the Courses on Nature. In Aristotle and in Merleau-Ponty epistemological rehabilitation of the sensitive experience leads, at the ontological level, to the theorization of a new idea of living subject and Nature: the biological synol in Aristotle and the notion of Leib in the terms of chiasm in Merleau-Ponty. Furthermore, the Aristotelian notion of synol shows strong similarities with Merleau-Ponty's conception of living body (Leib). On one hand, the speculative results obtained by Aristotle in his biological research (where it emerges that most of the vital functions are realized through a total co-penetration of soul and body), and on the other the theory of the synol that he drew up in De Anima (according to which living substance is an indissoluble unity of matter and form), show many points of contact with the idea of embodiment that traverses the whole of Merleau-Ponty's work starting from the Phenomenology of Perception

Abstract: The topics of work flexibility, precarious jobs, and the relationship between work, the market and production are subjects that are widely debated in the sociological, philosophical, economic and political spheres. Yet these topics are less touched on in the tradition of pedagogical research. The intention of this book is to build a seedbed for reflection on the central position assumed by work in the lives of every woman and man, inhabitants of a planet in which the transformation of work activities is imposing radical changes on lifestyles, community-building and societies. Work is not an abstract concept, but is incorporated into every human person who does it and into the relationships linking them to others. Man, his education and human formation provide the pivot around which to perform a pedagogical survey within the universe of "work", and inside the relationship between the human condition and working/professional life. What sense does work acquire today when going to observe children, young people, adults or migrants? Namely, what sense does it assume when its pivotal viewpoint is shifted off-centre in time and space? The essays intend to spark agile but critical, synchronic and diachronic reflection which, stemming from contextual questions on the meaning of work and on change in the workplace, will proceed to investigate the subjects in their specific lives and existential conditions. Essays by: Vanna Boffo, Pietro Causarano, Giovanna Del Gobbo, Emiliano Macinai, Maria Rita Mancaniello, Stefano Oliviero and Clara Silva

Abstract: Today the city is experiencing new forms of urban culture, between cityscape and mindscape. The cityscape moulded through tangible forms and values, spatialized in architectural and urban layouts, is increasingly linked to a mindscape project which originates from intangible forms and values linked to interests, events, invention and enhancement of resources in continuous movement. The cityscape advanced in this sense can but be planned together with a mindscape that is heterogeneous and complex and increasingly based on the experience that the place can offer. In it event and permanency blend to construct a personalized urban tale that puts the principle of utility alongside that of the desire to become a geographical-spatial, but also existential, landscape. This book reflects on the dynamics of the transformations caused by new forms of production and exchange in order to note down topics to apply to town planning

Abstract: Ricciuti starts from an analysis of some of the most significant projects from the post-war period to identify, for each of the cultural spheres geographically defined by the cities of Rome and Milan, a series of recurring characteristics and motifs that can be traced back to the maestro's desire to maintain a coherent language, albeit in a dual thematic register. Within the assertion that there exists a specificity to Moretti's work, and a close relationship with the different contexts, the author investigates this duality while seeking an alliance with literature and art criticism. This she does by recalling terms belonging to the language of artistic exegesis, but also by citing some authoritative contributions to the history of poetry and of European literature from the twentieth century and much more besides

Abstract: The clear and complete relationship that historically linked city and countryside has gradually faded more and more, up to the configuration of the current situation of urban sprawl by several parties considered unsustainable at the environmental, functional and morphological level. While an approach aimed at recovering lost physical and territorial realities may not appear very effective, it is however possible to attempt to identify paths to restore structure in the contemporary settlement layouts. A structure able to newly weave ecological, functional, morphological and symbolic relations between the urban and rural dimension. In this frame of reference, a decisive role can be played by open spaces, non-built-up natural or farming environments which constitute a resource for regaining the environmental quality of the contemporary city; for the construction of a new large system of public and collective spaces; and for the redefinition of limits, boundaries and thresholds between city and countryside. These are the topics dealt with in the book through a theoretical focus on the "middle landscape", its roots and the more recent planning experiences, and through a planning exercise on the Pistoia landscape. The aim of the volume is to attempt to provide indications and tools in order to read and design landscape with urban boundaries, today a strategic sphere for the regeneration of the contemporary city

Abstract: The dissertation deals with the contemporary city soundscape and fits into the disciplinary field of sensuous urbanism, soundscape studies and emotional geography. The key term, soundscape, is to be understood as all the sounds that surround us, as a perceptual theme, that is, object of a subject's perception, in its sense of 'landscape' including the metaphorical meaning of an emotional or mnemonic emotional soundscape. The dissertation is structured in two parts: the first and second chapters define the disciplinary spheres of sensory urbanism and soundscape studies, while the third and fourth chapters explore the forms that classical sound environment analysis and planning tools take on within the aforesaid disciplinary fields. Finally, the conclusions give a methodological indication aimed at favouring the integration of soundscape studies within the town planning discipline, and propose «tender sound map» and «sound niche» operating tools to help achieve the goal of planning the contemporary city's physical and sound spaces at the same time

Abstract: This book explores several aspects of the variegated relationship that connects the operational principles of a structure to its translation into written form, between the laws that govern its structural rationale and the technical solutions that decree the feasibility of its construction. This is considered an essential subject for the training of aspiring engineers, whose education is often strongly conditioned by a didactic approach that divides the knowledge of construction into circumscribed and independent disciplinary units. This same approach negatively connotes the progressive transformation of the professional profile of the contemporary engineer, from the original figure of a designer of technical solutions to that of a specialist-assessor of structural performance. The result is that such figures sometimes lack the critical instruments inherent to a knowledge that does not begin and end within models of scientific explanation, but has to be comprised within a broader cultural dimension featuring the coexistence and mutual nourishment of different branches of knowledge, including History, Science and Design through to the ultimate dynamics of Architecture

Abstract: A subject that is inexplicably little studied at present, or indeed not at all, is that of the quest for possible applications and feasible objectives in the energy requalification of existing buildings, existing or planned open spaces, old city centres and the monumental and diffuse cultural heritage. At the present time it is crucial that the issues, research and techniques linked to the possibilities of an aware use of energy are applied to the old city centres and the existing heritage. This must start from a knowledge and investigation of the traditional building materials and techniques, which are in themselves inherently sustainable (comprising both the ancient city and the consolidated modern city and their historic stratifications). The historic environment indeed represents an infinite cultural and environmental resource and a very high percentage of the global architectural heritage

Abstract: Leonardo Sciascia e la funzione sociale degli intellettuali collects the translations of three writings that have already appeared in English-speaking scientific journals - L'onore, il qualunquismo e l'essenzialismo ne L'antimonio di Sciascia, Sciascia e La scomparsa di Majorana and De L'Affaire Moro e della (ri)scrittura della storia - as well as an in-depth introduction that provides an overview of the author's research results on Sciascia - from which a much more conservative Sciascia than is commonly believed is revealed - as well as an analysis of Sciascia's poetics (centred on the public self-image of the "spoiler"). The essay ends with a concluding chapter where the last decade of Sciascia's career is examined (the period after L'Affaire Moro and the participation of the Sicilian writer in the Moro Commission) during which the author publishes various collections of essays - such as La strega e il capitano, 1912+1, Una storia semplice - and traces an essay on Telesio Interlandi, ideologue of the discriminatory legislation of 1938

Abstract: Despite the interest that has always been shown towards Florence in the Middle Ages, to date no systematic catalogue has existed of the medieval epigraphic evidence from the Florentine area. The work presents a census of 122 inscriptions on stone material, dating from the sixth to eighth century, from the territory of the current province of Florence. It makes an analysis and comparison of their material, graphic and textual characteristics and recovers some evidence which was little known or had even been completely forgotten. The introduction to the catalogue, also accompanied by numerous reproductions, follows the developments and history of medieval epigraphy studies in Italy and attempts to make a summary of the actual graphical aspects of the writings under analysis

Abstract: Cut-stone constructions are made of pre-hewn blocks dry assembled on top of each other. Owing to the formal complexity characteristic of these works, in order to design them it is necessary to have knowledge of the theory of lines, surfaces and their properties, as well as knowledge of the representation methods capable of rendering them on a plane surface. This knowledge set makes stereotomy the science that anticipates, in terms of theory and tools, modern descriptive geometry. These are the reasons for seeking the beginnings of descriptive geometry in stereotomy, that is, the reasons for the transformation of the mason's art of cutting stone into a bona fide science. Frézier's work fits among the last theoretical essays prior to the géométrie descriptive of Gaspard Monge. It is a treaty on solid geometry, devoted to the shape of the bodies, their intersections and the graphical methods necessary to represent them on a plane. In it the author draws up a rigorous theory that puts in place over two centuries of knowledge and experimentation on the subject of cutting stones

Abstract: This monograph discusses scalar verb classes. It tests theories of linguistic form and meaning, arguments and thematic roles, using Estonian data. The analyses help to understand the aspectual structure of Estonian. In Estonian, transitive verbs fall into aspectual classes based on the type of case-marking of objects and adjuncts. The book relates the morphosyntactic frames of verbs to properties typically associated with adjectives and nouns: scalarity and boundedness. Verbs are divided according to how their aspect is composed. Some verbs lexicalize a scale, which can be bounded either lexically or compositionally. Aspectual composition involves the unification of features. Compositionally derived structures differ according to which of the aspectually relevant dimensions are bounded

Abstract: In long-term contracts the topic of contingencies and corrective remedies is particularly important. The BGB (§ 313) and texts that derive from supranational bodies, such as The Principles of European Contract Law, the UNIDROIT Principles and the Draft Common Frame of Reference set out remedies in order to adapt the contract in the event of contingencies and other preconditions. Similar forms of protection are not provided for by the Italian Civil Code, whose remedies in the face of events stemming from a contingency often do not manage to meet the interest to preserve the relationship. The development of the sources highlights in particular the remedy of compensation and specific enforcement of the obligation to conclude a contract set out in art. 2932 of the Italian Civil Code, with important new features with respect to the past. After the direction taken by case law which accepts compensation for damage in the presence of a concluded and valid contract, the compensation remedy assumes the function of correcting the contract and not just upholding the economic operation. In short, what emerges from the compensation and specific protection are facts and operating techniques that justify and enable correction of a contract

Abstract: In recent years the subject of energy planning has come to occupy a role of growing importance, both in relation to the escalating costs, scarcity and impact of energy procurement and consumption and in relation to the increasingly broad future prospects generated by the development of technologies for the exploitation of renewable sources. Within this framework, the development and use of the latter frequently appears to be without benchmarks for integration into the broader picture of territorial planning, and hence of coordination with other human activities and territorial resources. With this in mind, this book aims to compose the elements of a perspective in which energy planning is seen not as an ulterior and separate form of planning, but as an activity integrated within the more general instruments for the government of the territory, and more specifically one that employs the resources of the territory in a sustainable manner also with a view to endogenous local development

Abstract: This thesis has been aimed at investigating the dynamical properties of one-dimensional gaseous nanowires, realized by trapping ultracold gases in laser-light lattice structures. The project was carried out at the European laboratory LENS in Florence, also with international collaborations. In recent years, one-dimensional systems have attracted great interest in different fields of physics, material science and chemistry, owing to their peculiar features: In this work, probing the response of the system to inelastic light-scattering experiments - Bragg spectroscopy - has allowed to explore the dynamics and the correlations inside these structures and the quantum phase-transition from superfluid to insulator, occurring due to inter-particle interactions

Abstract: Other Orientalisms analyses various forms of knowledge about India through the circulation of people, ideas, knowledge, images and objects between Florence and Bombay. In the second half of the nineteenth century Florence became an important centre for studies on India, manifested in the organisation of exhibitions, museums, journals and international conferences. Inspired by the relationship between two Indianists - the Italian Angelo De Gubernatis, a teacher of Sanskrit in Florence and the Goan José Gerson da Cunha, a physician and historian in Bombay - this book discloses an India that emerged from different places, peopled by a multiplicity of voices. The institutional, intellectual and museum experience of Florentine orientalism, albeit peripheral, further enhances the debate on knowledge and colonial power that has engaged social and human sciences in recent decades

Abstract: The book brings together critical considerations and experiences linked to the work of the author, lecturer in restoration at the Florence University Faculty of Architecture, as supervisor of degree theses on restoration. The reflections concern teaching Restoration as a subject, the conditions within which the knowledge and culture of restoration can ripen within our universities and the most recent problems encountered by both the discipline and restoration projects. In the first part of the publication, these aspects are set out in broad and more precisely conceptual and methodological terms in chapters and themed paragraphs which also act as a guide to drawing up degree theses on restoration, as well as a contributing to the didactics and efficiency of the specific discipline. This is followed by a selection of degree theses on restoration discussed in recent years which show the route from the principles, general problems and intervention criteria for every case study to drawing up a project. They are projects that deal with analysis methods and techniques, surveys, specialist restorations, regeneration, and the relationship between old and new. In short, the projects are what gave the final stage in the university education meaning and substance, also in order to acquire fundamental keys to restoration culture and activities in the world after university

Abstract: The book investigates the reflection of Arthur Schopenhauer on education, calling to mind some of the great figures who have underlined his value as educator: Nietzsche of the Third Untimely Meditation, Hadot and Foucault of the Art of Living and Care of the Self; or, from the opposite perspective, the roles that were projected onto the philosopher as a teacher: aesthetic educator who was master of artistic contemplation for numerous generations of artists and writers between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, master of wisdom, revealer of Eastern cultures, eudaemonological model of practical philosophy. The research also examines the recent renewed interest in «formation» (Bildung) in order to repropose the problem of how to return from the viewpoint of Schopenhauer's «anthropological results» to the very conceptual core - the relationship between the educational field and philosophical universe of Schopenhauer in connection with his notion of the human subject

Abstract: At least until the beginning of the 1990s, when the paradigm of recognition seemed to supplant the paradigm of redistributive justice theories, all the biggest contemporary political theories attempted to single out injustice in some form of inequality and tried in various ways to make individuals equal within a particular space for interpersonal comparison: whether this be the space of fundamental freedoms, income, wealth, conditions for self-respect, well-being, chances of well-being or capabilities. The objective of this work is to rebuild the main notions of equality and justice which have emerged from the contemporary philosophical-political debate and, at the same time, account for the critical theories that they have inspired, from the theories in which the language of difference adds to or surpasses the language of equality, to the paradigms located radically beyond all those regulatory positions which more or less explicitly arise from the liberal tradition, such as the paradigm of biopolitics, and that of cognitive capitalism

Abstract: The 7th International Conference of the Gruppo di Studi sulla Comunicazione Parlata, dedicated to the memory of Claire Blanche-Benveniste, chose as its main theme Speech and Corpora. The wide international origin of the 235 authors from 21 countries and 95 institutions led to papers on many different languages. The 89 papers of this volume reflect the themes of the conference: spoken corpora compilation and annotation, with the technological connected fields; the relation between prosody and pragmatics; speech pathologies; and different papers on phonetics, speech and linguistic analysis, pragmatics and sociolinguistics. Many papers are also dedicated to speech and second language studies. The online publication with FUP allows direct access to sound and video linked to papers (when downloaded)

Abstract: 53 writers invited to speak, as artists, of themselves and their world at the beginning of the new millennium in no more than 2002 keystrokes. A new research criterion with which Fonti di Weltliteratur. Ungheria obtains the real and literary data for a theoretical specification of the state and behaviour of the cultural sphere in the globalized context, in the critical passage constituted - for the political and economic spheres as well - by a transformation of linguistic-national realities. Brief historical notes on the recent and current status of the writer in a Hungary passing from dictatorship to democracy in the end enable light to be thrown on the possible fate of the general figure of the intellectual in the perspective of the realization of a Goethean Weltliteratur. Abstract: The urgency for policies to plan and manage the European Mediterranean coastal landscape is now evident: along the Latin Arch exceptional landscape values are accompanied by a growing anthropic pressure that is speeding up its transformations, creating significant problems; it is here, more than in other places, that the challenge posed by the preservation-development pair emerges. This study looks at the strategies developed within three protected coastal landscapes that have taken up the challenge. Interpreted as test laboratories for landscape policies, they give precious cues for the planning and management of the ordinary coastal landscape

Abstract: Gino Arias (1879-1940), Florentine historian and economist of Israeli origin, was in his later years one of the top theorists of Fascist corporatism, which he came to at the end of an as yet widely unstudied intellectual path. After reconstructing his biography, the book investigates Arias's debut as a law historian, his route towards political economics and subsequent subscription to nationalism, paving the way to his involvement in that Fascist regime of which, paradoxically, he was to be both one of the most feared theorists and most illustrious victims, owing to the exile enforced upon him by the race laws. The appendix to the book offers a wealth of new documentation, including an inventory of his archives, the transcription of 130 letters to Achille Loria and his bibliography

Abstract: What is the relationship between public debt and private wealth? And what do family policies have to do with these financial aggregates? We will see that there is a connection, but let's first clarify what is meant by family. In the common sense, a family includes ascenders, descendants and collaterals. But when we talk about family policies we only think of potential parents or families with pre-school children

Abstract: This volume completes the valuable work of cataloguing carried out on the correspondence of Giuseppe Dessí conserved in the 'Alessandro Bonsanti' contemporary archive of Florence. The research, launched by Chiara Andrei in 2003 with the edition of the Corrispondenze familiari (Firenze University Press) and continued in 2009 by Francesca Nencioni with the publication of Lettere di amici e lettori (Firenze University Press), has its third result in this work by Francesca Nencioni, who has indexed the unpublished editorial and professional material, providing it with exhaustive references. The letters make it possible to trace a profile of the writer from his youth through to the 70s, illustrating the historic, political and cultural backdrop against which the events and activities of both his first and second profession developed. This casts light not only his complex professional career, but also on Dessí's collaboration with newspapers and journals, his relations with publishers and his contacts with the world of the mass media. Of particular importance is the appendix of unpublished letters, meticulously edited by Monica Graceffa, comprising the correspondence with two seminal journals of the 1930s and 40s «L'Orto» and «Primato». In the background are the figures of Bottai and Vecchietti and the complex coexistence between the intellectuals of the time and the regime

Abstract: The coming of Greece under Roman rule marks the beginning of a series of political, administrative and most of all religious transformations, with particular regard to the diffusion across the Greek world of the Imperial Cult as an instrument of territorial cohesion. The present study focuses on a specific period, the second century AD, during which the Panhellenion, a league that incorporates those populations which share a connection with the traditional Greek world, is founded under the auspices of the emperor Hadrian. The analysis of the construction of a new Greek identity has its focus on the Panhellenion, the creation of which stems from the exchange between the imperial power and the city-elites, and on the means employed by the various cities for the renegotiation of their own indentity

Abstract: In 1980 Froebel, Heinrichs and Kreye published the English-language The New International Division of Labour, trying to highlight the consequences of market reorganization after the crisis of the mid 1970s, which was soon to transform into so-called globalization. A third of a century later, the "fantastic adventure" of market integration seems to have been crystallized by the 2007-2008 crisis, opening a further period of great instability. But the geography of wealth production has transformed radically and appears unrecognizable to the early-80s scholar. In a framework of great social, political and cultural change, China, a country at the time defined as an "economic dwarf", is the second largest economy on the planet and has become its "factory". The standardizing concept of "Third World" having vanished, some former colonial economies have undertaken rapid growth processes, while others have ruinously accentuated their underdevelopment. The traditionally advanced regions, then defined as "industrial", have opened out into trajectories defined, vice versa, as "post-industrial", some consolidating their competitive edge and others sparking lengthy declines

Abstract: Among the almost 200 copies containing Plutus, the 23 fourteenth-century codices analysed in the book are the most ancient after the vetustiores and their collation has enabled the construction of a stemma codicum which effectively represents the Byzantine scholars' study environments and how they intersect. The identification of a Tzetzian study circle, which must have drawn from ancient sources, has led to an understanding of the nature of a large part of the fourteenth-century testimonies, thereby avoiding the generic explanation of contaminatio. This work makes further, interesting contributions through its recognition of the characteristics of the "Thoman" edition and identification of a link between Thessalonica and Constantinople, and also has the merit of having created greater clarity in the complex and as yet unstudied tradition of Plutus

Abstract: The volume is a collection of the papers from a study seminar held at the University of Florence Faculty of Education and Training Sciences in March 2012 entitled Formazione e orientamento al lavoro. Le sfide della disabilità adulta. The aim of the initiative was to highlight a topic/problem which has little or no resonance in civil society, or in study and research contexts, namely, training and career guidance for disabled adults. The volume also recounts a course of studies carried out by Le Rose, a cooperative from the municipality of Florence, involving empirical research on the relationship between disability and job placement. As well as proposing an interdisciplinary and multifaceted reflection on a definitely innovative topic, the intention is to emphasize the central place of work in the lives of all people and the role that suitable education and training plays in constructing the adult identity. Care for the place where the job training is carried out, as well as attention to the relationships and actions pursued by the workers undertaking to develop job placement programmes, are central dimensions for the construction of a renewed culture of inclusion, citizenship and social and personal recognition

Abstract: In the long run economic growth does not improve people's well-being. Traditional theories - adaptation and social comparisons - explain this evidence, but they don't explain what shapes the trend of subjective well-being and its differences across countries. Recent research identified in social capital a plausible candidate to explain the trends of well-being. This dissertation adopts various econometric techniques to explore the relationship over time among social capital, economic growth and subjective well-being. The main conclusion is that social capital is a good predictor of the trend of subjective well-being, both within and across countries. Hence, policies for well-being should aim at preserving and enhancing social capital for the quality of the social environment matters

Abstract: The volume analyses the contribution made by companies, institutions and research bodies operating in the region of Tuscany for the development of new technologies in the field of cultural heritage. The aim is to contribute to the current debate on the innovative capacity of artistic heritage and on cities of art, understood as creative environments characterised by the presence of clusters that are capable of generating and developing heritage-driven innovations. Through the analysis of research projects and innovation networks, the studies contained in the volume investigate the instance of laser technologies for restoration and of new ICT technologies for the digitisation of cultural heritage. The volume stems from a three-year collaboration with the "Nello Carrara" Institute of Applied Physics of the CNR of Florence

In this context this precursor project brings to a strong focus on the environment and that after 25 years could be defined as an early solar energy retrofit project

Abstract: The book sets out to reconstruct why and how poetry and prose came to meet and mix in Italy between the second half of the nineteenth century and the beginning of the twentieth century; contrary to what has taken place in France for the petit poème en prose, there has been no overall mapping of the Italian sphere to give refreshed sense to single phenomena. The author begins to fill this gap by looking at three areas of research: the Scapigliatura movement, the experimentations of the last two decades of the nineteenth century (from Ragusa Moleti to Pica, Deledda to Capuana), and «La Voce» 1908-1913. Two works are constantly used as inevitable points of reference: Operette morali by Leopardi and Petits poèmes en prose by Baudelaire

Abstract: The book begins with a detailed description of the characteristics of the photosynthetic apparatus and the processes that take place there, to then present the general principles of fluorescence. After that, it gives a description of the characteristics of direct and modulated fluorescence and a presentation of the shared and distinctive parameters of these two techniques. Then a brief presentation is made of other innovative approaches to the analysis of fluorescence (Chlorophyll Fluorescence Imaging - CFI, P700 absorbance, delayed fluorescence) and the relative tools. An important part of the book comprises a description of the possible applications of fluorescence techniques for the analysis of various types of stress (aridity, strong light radiations, UV, high and low temperatures, salinity, weedkillers, pollution, etc.) and, consequently, their possible use in agriculture, forestry and to protect the environment

Abstract: Most of the papers collected in this book resulted from presentations and discussions undertaken during the V Lablita Workshop that took place at the Federal University of Minas Gerais, Brazil, on August 23-25, 2011. The workshop was held in conjunction with the II Brazilian Seminar on Pragmatics and Prosody. The guiding themes for the joint event were illocution, modality, attitude, information patterning and speech annotation. Thus, all papers presented here are concerned with theoretical and methodological issues related to the study of speech. Among the papers in this volume, there are different theoretical orientations, which are mirrored through the methodological designs of studies pursued. However, all papers are based on the analysis of actual speech, be it from corpora or from experimental contexts trying to emulate natural speech. Prosody is the keyword that comes out from all the papers in this publication, which indicates the high standing of this category in relation to studies that are geared towards the understanding of major elements that are constitutive of the structuring of speech

Abstract: This work asks questions on the relationship between innovative collective actors, such as the 'new social movements' and the political institutions of representative democracy starting from an underlying hypothesis: the idea that civil society is the main source of political legitimation of liberal democracy. More precisely, what this monograph reflects on is the capacity of the social movements to concretely test alternative forms of democracy. The aim of the contemporary movements is to augment the fundamental values of the "democratic revolution", namely the principles of freedom and equality. They constantly lead to conflict and social antagonism: indeed new conflicts and new antagonisms arise every time that the movements implement radical experiences of democracy in the multiple and different spheres of social life. Only by accepting and setting value by these alternative democratic practices and experiences - and this is the author of this work's thesis - may democratic ideals be revived in contemporary society

Abstract: Author of Architettura del medioevo in Sardegna which won him the Premio Nazionale Olivetti in 1956, Raffaello Delogu was an art historian and Commissioner for Antiquities and Monuments in Sardinia, Abruzzo and Sicily. His correspondence with one of the most eminent Italian writers of the second half of the twentieth century, as transcribed and lavishly annotated here by Monica Graceffa, reveals him not only as a committed intellectual devoted to the study of ancient and modern art, but also as a caustic and playful friend. His dialogue with Giuseppe Dessí commenced in their youth, when Dessí was an amateur painter on the way to maturity, who instead rapidly developed into a mature writer and attentive connoisseur of all forms of art. In addition to their studies and mutual friends (including Claudio Varese and Maria Lai), they also shared an interest in painting and in what Dessí was experiencing (his moves, his political passion) and what he was writing (fiction, drama, essays); important in this regard are the letters touching on the collaboration of both on the Sardinian issue of Pietro Calamandrei's «Il Ponte»

Abstract: City and territory are currently experiencing a phase of development, or crisis, depending on whether they manage to form the know-how to respond to the current exponential evolution. Know-how that has to make a critical assessment of the fabric of structures, cultures and inherited layouts. Between continuity and innovation, contemporary town planning culture creates the basis for a more flexible model that can seek out new continuities by interpreting the present discontinuity, dissent, difference, decentralization and dispersion. This implies a processual space and new aesthetics of sense and therefore presupposes new themes able to redefine the physical-relational relationships by combining cultural roots, functional requirements and spatial layouts

Abstract: In the reform process that has characterised public administrations for years, simplification and transparency represent two innovative and important aspects for the organisational model of universities. A complex issue that involves multiple profiles and urges a deep reflection on still open questions of significant depth. In their interventions the speakers explore different aspects on the matter, highlighting the reasons for continuing towards an overall change of the administration aimed at making its action more efficient, rapid and economical

Abstract: The volume begins with an analysis of the reception of Jean Paul in Italy in order to highlight how the Scapigliatura movement raised this author to prominence. In consideration of the development of Italian culture in the second half of the nineteenth century, the book stresses the importance of the German models in the changes in the macro- and microstructures of the literary text. The core of the research revolves around Carlo Dossi's relationship with the works of Jean Paul: from the enthusiasm of his first literary discoveries to his progressive detachment. In this study, the Note azzurre provide a precious source on the life of Dossi, his relationship with contemporary society and his bond with the maestro Jean Paul, leading to a closer investigation of two aspects: the philosophical-aesthetic conception of humour and the use of digression as a narrative element introduced to disorientate the reader

Abstract: This work aims at filling some historiographical gaps concerning the economy and the commercial activities of Naples and its satellite ports in the decades around the turn of the fifteenth century using unusual and complicated sources such as Tuscan trading practices and Venetian tariffs. To the analysis of these materials the study of commercial letters sent to the Merchant of Prato by operators present in those areas was added. This addition offers two levels of interpretation, the first of which concerns the methodological aspects of the research. From the second, the one of results, a particularly articulated picture emerges in which the Neapolitan region appears as an attractive outlet market for woollen cloths and silk drapes manufactured in the cities of central-northern Italy and, at the same time, as an important supply market of some raw materials and many foodstuffs

Abstract: Seven European Regional Governments, together with Earlall and universities and research centres, have undertaken to refine a first draft of a Joint Progress Report of Regions on Implementation of European Lifelong Learning Strategies in the perspective of the Europe 2020 Strategy. The purpose of this exercise is to demonstrate the usefulness and need to make an instrument available to European Regional Governments that helps to understand and evaluate the educational conditions of the regional population when compared with other regions. The Report shows how, over the decade, all the Regional Governments have undertaken to adapt training systems to the demographic dynamics characterised by the general ageing of the population and by migratory phenomena. Simultaneously the Report also shows the need for urgent improvements in some fields where the impact of policies is still too modest and where the risk of stagnation must be dealt with (for example, lifelong learning policies and NEET reduction)

Abstract: This book continues the collaboration between the department of BioLaw of the University of Florence and the non-profit association Madre Provetta, to contribute to a project of study and research that can build towards a common European law on Bioethics. In view of the professional activity in which they are engaged, the authors are among the leading experts in their respective fields on the issues addressed. Biotechnologies have rendered both birth and death more complex, which explains why the approach must be multidisciplinary. In effect, the research ranges from the medical and scientific sphere to the fields of law, sociology and philosophy and through to the institutional dimension. The leitmotif is the responsibility and self-determination of the individual: an anthology addressing issues concerning the beginning and the end of life. Particular focus is placed on the aspect of legal update in the light of recent case law, which is increasingly called upon, on the one hand to lend support to the legislator, and on the other to adapt national legislation to the rules and principles emerging from the supranational and European institutions

Abstract: The present work explores brain functional changes in drug-naïve Parkinson's disease (PD) patients by means of molecular imaging techniques. Thirty-one consecutive drug-naïve PD patients from the Neurological Clinic of the University of Flor-ence underwent clinical assessment, neuropsychological assessment, MRI, [123I]FP-CIT SPECT, [18F]FDG PET. First, [18F]FDG-PET was employed to identify in drug-naïve PD patients brain metabolic alteration uniquely related to disease process and not modulated by anti-parkinsonian therapeutic intervention. Second, [18F]FDG-PET and [123I]FP-CIT SPECT were employed together to explore the early functional changes in brain function related to dopaminergic depletion in the putamen and in the caudate nucleus

Abstract: Based loosely on Primo Levi's Il Sistema Periodico, the play is set in a Fahrenheit 451 scenario. In this world without either books or memory, a man of the street arrives with a bundle of not easily decipherable papers: with the help of the narrative voice, of his friends - Science, Technology and Nature - and of two actors at length off-stage, Primo and his friend Alberto, the man succeeds in reconstructing the episode of the story Cerio. Through memory he thus reconstructs the lost identity, that is our history. Science, Technology and Nature allow the man without memory to master scientific knowledge and free himself from his state. The drama finds its catharsis in a poignant passage, inspired by the story Carbonio, which lyrically sets up a temporal link between an atom of carbon from the smoke of a crematorium and the same dwelling within the body of each one of us: a poetic parabola of a science immersed in the life and history of man
