Abstract: The region crossed by the upper course of the Tigris River, in south-eastern Turkey, has long been an area little known from an archaeological point of view. The intensification of field research, starting from the nineties of the last century, has produced the evidence on which to base a first reconstruction of the history of the settlement and of the material culture of these territories, located between the high Anatolian-Eastern lands and the Mesopotamian plains. The results of the excavations and field surveys indicate that between the end of the Ancient Bronze Age and the beginning of the Middle Bronze Age a process of transformation and reorganisation of the local communities matured. The appearance of large architectural complexes and buildings in medium-small sites, characterised by particular sets of objects and red-brown ceramics, could reveal the development of socio-political realities more structured than those of the previous period. Moreover, this could be an expression of the Khurrite world which, according to historical studies, would locate one of its main settlement areas in the Tigris region

Abstract: This article is dedicated to relativization in contemporary Russian and provides an overview of the main Russian morphosyntactic relativization strategies (Cinque 2013). The study describes the typological variety of Russian RCs, using data taken from the National Corpus and tested with native speakers' judgments. Three criteria have been adopted to examine Russian RCs: the cross-linguistic linear orders of RC and Noun Head (Dryer 2005), the presence of a resumptive pronoun in the relativization site (Lavine 2003) and, finally, the inflectional completeness of the RC (finite/ non-finite RCs)

Abstract: The aim of the present article is to investigate the aspectual status of the Russian verbs prodolzhat' and prodolzhit'. It is shown that the form prodolzhal is very frequently used in the past tense as a perfective verb with inchoative value in sequences of single events. Furthermore, the diachronic analysis of the examples reveals that, in the past tense, the form prodolzhit' until the 1990s was much less commonly used than the form prodolzhat'. Taking into account these results, in the article is hypothesized that the form prodolzhat' in the past tense may be considered a biaspectual verb

Abstract: Retracing Dessí's collaboration in the magazines "L'Orto", "Primato" and "Cronache" directed by Giorgio Vecchietti, among stories, essays and reviews that have remained largely unpublished, means deepening the writer's artistic development by exploring into the creative laboratory of his debut. The 36 texts collected and commented by Francesca Bartolini allow us to analyse the thematic and stylistic approaches that were further developed and deepened in the subsequent production. At the same time they take into account the years of the fascist dictatorship, allowing us to investigate the development of an intellectual conscience engaged in an anti-fascist, rebel movement typical of many writers of that generation. Weaving the critical discourse with the reading of the correspondence, the complex relationship that linked Dessí to the three editorial offices is noted, testifying to the passion of a young artist eager to follow his inclination, but also aware of the difficulty of preserving his freedom and identity in the limitations of the regime

Abstract: The developments in the globalization process, the increased strength of European integration and the improvements in communication technologies have put the convergence of institutional structures of the different capitalist systems at the centre of the debate. In this perspective, banks play a crucial role. In the new context, movable assets become indeed increasingly profitable, which reduces the weight of traditional activities in the financial statements of banking institutions. Starting from these premises, the volume investigates the extent of the de-intermediation and financialisation processes of the main Italian banks, deepening their connection with the cultural, relational and political dimension

After a discussion of the properties of these sentences (1), we consider the grammatical and semantic characteristics of their components and especially of the null subject (2). In section (3) we consider which verbs occur more frequently in these sentences and in (4) the relationship among the different components of the indefinite-personal sentences. In (5) we conclude by briefly introducing the Italian sentences that most frequently correspond to Russian sentences of this type

Abstract: The aim of this work is to identify the factors which contributed to create Lourdes' success. This analysis starts from the comparison between the 18 apparitions in Lourdes with some similar and contemporary episodes occurring in France, but with a somewhat different outcome, intended as success among the pilgrims. The initial historical, political and cultural contextualization work is accompanied by the analysis of some key aspects of the Catholic Church of that time. In reference to the purpose of the text, two areas are analysed more in-depth: medical science and literature, both closely connected with the question of miracles

Abstract: Size reduction of low power electronic DC-DC converters is a topic of major interest for power electronics which requires the study and design of circuits and components working under redefined requirements. For this purpose, novel circuital topologies provide advantages in terms of power density increment, especially where a single chip design is feasible. These concepts have been applied to design and implement an integrated high step-down multiphase buck converter and to study the miniaturization of a stackable fiflyback architecture. Particular attention has been dedicated to power inductors, focusing on the modeling and measurement of magnetic materials' hysteresis and core losses

Abstract: This volume intends to pay homage to Marcello Garzaniti on the occasion of his 60th birthday and thirtieth anniversary of his career, in recognition of his generous commitment in the field of research, popularisation of science and teaching. The heterogeneity of the contributions offered by colleagues, students and friends testifies to the scholar's erudition and multifaceted interests. The five sections composing the volume range from the history of culture to the history of the Slavic ecclesiastical literary civilisation, from linguistics to Slavic literature, without neglecting the history of Slavistics. The volume is completed by the bibliography of the scientific production of Marcello Garzaniti

Abstract: This volume, born from the collaboration of thirty-four scholars and trade union representatives, has a dual purpose. Firstly, to propose the analysis and theses on the human and political meaning of work contained in Bruno Trentin's main book La città del lavoro (2nd ed., Firenze University Press, 2014), in the current phase of social transformations and theoretical uncertainties. Secondly, to promote a reflection testing the book's fertility and topicality in order to deepen the processes at work at the start of the 21st century, in the belief that the pages written in 1997 by one of the greatest representatives of the history of the CGIL represent a 'classic' of the socio-political thought of the 20th century. The emerging result is surprising in many ways, and corresponds to the extraordinary richness of Trentin's project, as well as to the political and trade-unionist ability of its author. Abstract: With the additional help of archival material, the first part of this volume reconstructs the history of the Institute for Eastern Europe (Ipeo), founded in Rome in 1921, whose activity was characterized by a remarkable editorial production closely connected to the birth and development of Italian Slavic Studies. Despite the inevitable coexistence with fascism and the submission, somehow, to a line of conduct which especially in the 1930s accompanied the regime's policy, the Ipeo's activity was marked above all by a sincere desire to spread knowledge of a world which was still quite unknown in the Italian context under many aspects. The Ipeo operated until the end of World War II, when the government funding and even the political and cultural assumptions which had favoured its birth ceased because of the changed geopolitical context, determined by the end of the conflict. The second part of the volume covers the General alphabetical catalogue of all Ipeo's publications, accompanied by a Chronological catalogue and by an Index of authors, editors, translators and preface writers

Abstract: The San Samuele theatre company from Venice constitutes a perfect example of the extraordinary vitality of the early-eighteenth-century troupes, before the success of Carlo Goldoni's dramaturgy. Reconstructing the chronology of the training activity led by the theatre company manager Giuseppe Imer makes it possible to observe the extraordinary versatility of the actors from the Commedia dell'Arte, and the breadth of a repertoire which, between 1726 and 1749, spaced from dramas to musical interludes, passing through the "canovacci" of the commedia all'improvviso and tragedies. Thanks to unpublished documents and to a critical analysis of the repertoires, the author appoints the actors as the main protagonists of the spectacular Venetian scene, and offers important updates on the migrations of troupes in the second quarter of the 18th century

Abstract: Jeanne (Jane) Oulman Bensaude belonged to a Parisian Jewish upper middle class family related to the world of finance and fully involved in the cultural and political life of Paris in the second half of the nineteenth century. In Memorie Jane recalls the family environment, travels, readings, living rooms, meetings with poets and writers, musicians and politicians. She narrates her passion for music and writing, to which she dedicated herself in Lisbon, where she lived after the marriage to Alfredo Bensaude. The story of a development, of a life divided between France and Portugal, Jane's autobiography offers many reasons of interest: from within the Oulman family life, in the education of sons and daughters, in observance of the rites, in the interweaving of family affairs with the history of France, it represents a rare document of the process of assimilation of French Judaism to the values of the nation

Abstract: Against the background of the cities of Lecce, Parma and Florence (Macrì's well-known "Dimore vitali"), between the 1940s and the 1970s, an almost forgotten author (poet, translator from French, writer) and his "teacher" stand out among the fiercest critics of the twentieth century. There are many stories intertwining in the 142 epistolary pieces collected in this volume, carefully transcribed and annotated by Dario Collini. Personal stories (particularly letters are entrusted with the unprecedented and intriguing portrait of a multifaceted, complex, elusive Pagan) and collective stories, such as those told by «Libera Voce» and «Critone», which count among the cultural initiatives that helped bring the peripheral reality of Salento closer to the major literary centres of the peninsula. Along a wide chronological span, the story of a deep friendship is also revealed, which did not claim to erase the distance between the two correspondents, but which would continue over time nevertheless, nourished by "gratitude", "esteem" and "trust"

Abstract: A Monetary Hope for Europe. This book studies the euro in a global perspective and opens a new series edited by the Jean Monnet European Centre of Excellence of the University of Florence, Verso l'unificazione europea. Most of the chapters have been written by economists who met and discussed their diverse views at a multi-disciplinary conference organized by the Centre in May 2013 under the title The euro and the struggle for the creation of a new global currency: Problems and perspectives in the building of the political, financial and economic foundations of the European federal government. The list of contributors also includes historians as well as European and international law academics. Their essays have been revised on the basis and against the backdrop of an ongoing crisis of both the euro and the whole European project in the last years and months. The volume aims to provide useful data and interpretations to improve knowledge on the euro and the European Union in their economic, historical, juridical and political perspectives

Abstract: What do the words Resistance and public law suggest? On the one hand, they evoke the close relationship between the Resistance, intended as a historical phenomenon, and the institutional solutions and legal problems which arose in that situation and which have soon given rise to a profound renewal of the state. On the other hand, they remind us of what happened, at a given moment, to many jurists, who were otherwise involved in the choice of the path to take, as scholars, public officials or as men. Moving from the evocation of Silvio Trentin's testimony, which functions here as an example, this volume suggests an interdisciplinary path, in which one can try to approach the complexity of the Resistance's legal universe, its many voices and its controversial representations. Seventy years after the Italian Republic's birth, wondering on such issues and remembering the experiences of some of their protagonists can provide a useful starting point to grasp a plural and very rich message, and to renew trust in a constituent legacy which is still capable of innervating the spirit of the country with strength

Abstract: Avanti il divorzio is undoubtedly a fundamental work for the history of women and civil rights. Anna Franchi is fighting, together with the socialists, both for freedom of choice and for the right to civil and political vote, which were denied to women. The texts also deal with the struggles for the right to work and for fair wages. Moreover, they present unpublished profiles of personalities who devoted their fight of little hope and much courage to the cause. Anna Franchi was also the first woman who believed in the movement of the Macchiaioli: she wrote the history of the artistic movement, got to know its interpreters and sought for them a market that recognised their value. The friendship with Giovanni Fattori and the correspondence with many painters are relevant: the letters reflect not only the artistic aesthetic of the Macchiaioli, but also their moods, relationships, travels, successes and many sad moments that were confided to Fattori's friend, Anna

Abstract: What is a comment? What does it mean to interpret a text? What are the skills and methods used by great masters such as Auerbach, Spitzer, Sontag, Segre, Adelia Noferi, Contini, Barthes and Raimondi in their dialogue with the ancient and new hermeneutic theories? What kind of relationship is established between message/text and commentator? What is the common ground where the act of interpreting and that of translating end up meeting? Enza Biagini wonders about these fundamental questions while, between comment and commentary, she carries out an articulated and complex study on one of the major arts born for and around reading: translation. A demanding game is indeed played between interpreter and translator, which Enza Biagini analyses and discusses with great theoretical knowledge, crossing Italian and French experiments, original texts and anthologies, with the aim of verifying theories on the field of literature which, as such, is based on an endless quest for the interpretation of meaning

Abstract: Automi, realtà virtuale e formiche ("Automata, virtual reality and ants") proposes an analysis of the complexity of the war phenomenon through three different approaches: in the microphysics of the individual action, in simulated reality and in a metaphor with the biological environment. The investigation into the nature of the interactions between man and machine presents the attempt to dominate the Clausewitzian uncertainty of the battle through an automated, post-human system. This seems to be resolved in the Omega Point, which the theologian de Chardin had identified as a point of escape from entropy and from the disorder of reality. There is neither a scientific solution, nor a theological fate. Intelligence is shared through the semantics of the satellite, of the drone and through the information passing from machine to machine. While the warriors will act as a swarm, by sharing a huge amount of data, each one of them on the exocrine glands of the machine, St. Basil was right when he warned that whoever claims to speak on the nature of things (and therefore on war) should first of be able to speak of the nature of the ant

Abstract: The volume, originating from the 5th Slavic Linguistics Meeting (Rome, 25-27 September 2014), reflects the state of the most recent research carried out in Italy in this discipline. It aims to continue the tradition already started at the end of the 1980s from the series Morphosyntactic problems of Slavic languages (Bologna 1988, 1990, 1991; Padua 1994, 1995), which has been recently renewed in the volumes published after the Meetings of Bergamo (2007), Padua (2008), Forlì (2010) and Milan (2014). This contribution testifies an expansion of interest beyond the boundaries of morphosyntax, towards other areas of theoretical and applied linguistics, such as pragmatics, semantics, language acquisition and sociolinguistics. Due to the variety of topics and methodologies used, the publication could interest not only those who carry out both theoretical and applied research in the field of Slavic languages, but also scholars in General linguistics

Abstract: This paper describes word formation as observed in the earliest stages of L2 Polish. 31 L1 Italian beginning learners took part in a 14-hour Polish course, which was recorded, transcribed and morphologically tagged in order to correlate learner output with the relevant input features. After 4:30 hours, the learners could produce new words using the derivational suffix -k-, which in the input can be found in the majority of feminine nouns. This finding suggests that after minimal exposure, learners can identify the morphological structure of a class of nouns and reproduce it in their output

Abstract: This is the second of the two volumes dedicated to Hermeticism and Florence published by Firenze University Press (the first one entitled Critici, traduttori, maestri, modelli can be purchased separately). Between 1930 and 1945, a group of young people started one of the most vibrant literary seasons of the 20th century in Florence. Many of them recognized themselves in a common narrative marked by a shared imagination, and in the silent dissent from the rhetoric of the regime, which was contrasted by the radicalism of the ethical request and by the deep bond with the Jewish-Christian, romantic and -symbolist roots of the European civilization. One hundred years after the birth of its protagonists (Mario Luzi, Piero Bigongiari, Alessandro Parronchi, Vittorio Bodini), there are still doubts surrounding Hermeticism, its birth and its distinctive features. Searching for how it changed, why it was surrounded by prejudices and aversion (as done by the two essential volumes collecting the documents of a memorable conference in which Anna Dolfi involved scholars from all over the world), leads to draw a portrait of the Hermetic authors, its critics (Bo, Macrí), its friends (the generational companion Vittorio Sereni), admirers and/or detractors, and to outline the boundaries of a complex chapter of Italian history which began with Fascism and recently ended with the fall of ideologies. Together with its 'players', Florence is in a prominent position, a city which, for a few decades, was exposed to the greatness of the past by a new passion, made of culture, creativity and intelligence

Abstract: The volume describes experiences of the first twelve years of the Social Sciences Library of the University of Florence in its new location. We talk about management contexts, organisational structures, analysis, projects, crises and solutions affecting most of the services. Moreover, we also present an approach and a working method. Our need to write stemmed from the impression of having accomplished a phase of our work and of being called to take stock of the situation, giving account of the work done and critically analysing it, in order to be ready to face the new challenges that the future would present, starting from today

Abstract: What does the growing interest of literary criticism towards the representation of nature and its ethical implications tell us? In which folds of narrative, poetic or cinematographic discourse do the manifestations of a continuously renewed sensitivity for the contradictions of progress, for the precarious coexistence between human, animal and plant agents lie? And what kind of relationships can there be between the semantics of places and landscapes, expressed in a fictional world, and eco-criticism? Sixteen essays suspended between 'text' analysis and theory of criticism are solicited and collected by Nicola Turi, in an attempt to answer these and other questions affecting the function and orientations of contemporary criticism, its ability to give back the forms of artistic language, and at the same time its recurring temptation to confront, as Calvino's Bradamante would say, with the «life behind it that pushes and disarranges all the leaves of the book»

Abstract: This volume was born from a recognition of the experiences and warnings which were needed for the creation of a landscape observatory in Tuscany, and for the definition of the network and interactive methods which the observatory itself can use while aiming at its own operational effectiveness. The analysis was carried out during the formation stage of the Landscape Plan of Tuscany and during the collaboration which the Regional Authority has promoted with the Inter-University Centre of Territory Sciences. Starting from the examination of the organizational and functional models characterizing the main European and Italian experiences, in the plurality of regulatory contexts, forms of landscape planning and regulation and practices of cultural and association mobilization of the reference populations, some working hypotheses are formulated and calibrated on the Tuscan situation

Abstract: The work Intorno a Boccaccio/Boccaccio e dintorni 2015 stems from the international seminar that was held in Certaldo on the 9th September 2015, and is the second edition of an initiative which the ENGB National Association has now made an annual appointment. The purpose of these seminars, aimed primarily at young scholars, is to collect and develop the research prospects emerged in occasion of the centenary celebrations in 2013 and to offer a place for a new and contemporary discussion. The topics covered during the seminar, mainly focused on the Latin and vernacular work of Boccaccio, address (with specific attention to the Decameron) aspects of tradition and textual criticism, history of the language, literary criticism and history of the miniature

Abstract: In Italy, public policies have difficult processing, and even more difficult implementation. It is normal for a number of unexpected side effects to occur as a result of a public policy. Likewise, it is normal that a public policy determines an impact which is appreciated ex post, but cannot be identified with the original, designed one. So much so that many policies resemble a bet, rather than a project. In other words, they are always exposed to a universe of factors and circumstances which may destroy or change their theoretical assumptions, independently from any effective and measurable government capacity. This is the sign of a democratic regime's structural fragility and of the government capacity expressed by it: its difficulty in feeding its policies with sufficient legitimizing doses and tools in order for the policies to achieve the desired effectiveness. It is a classic theme for political science; in this volume, it is revisited in the light of the different types of empirically conceivable legitimization and of the contemporary state's ability to produce social regulation

Abstract: Villa Il Gioiello, built in the measured, harmonious style of the mid-16th century on the hill of Arcetri just outside Florence, is where Galileo spent his last years, under house arrest. Recently restored, it was not simply Galileo's prison, it was also an observatory, a place of study and maybe even a place of leisure when he was tending the small vineyard that grew just over the courtyard wall

Abstract: This study offers a novel approach to a longstanding problem in Slavic Linguistics, the formal representation of the Northern Russian participial constructions in -n(o)/-t(o). Unlike previous works, the methodological stance adopted by the author focuses on singling out all the relevant patterns of variation and on pursuing a unified explanation for them. The key to the solution of the puzzle is the idea that the participial affix -n-/-t- and the agreement inflections are not just pieces of morphology inserted post-syntactically, but true heads that enter the computation and are able to manipulate the argumental roles of the verb and to check the EPP. The author's proposal is properly framed in the context of current debate on interlanguage variation

Between 1930 and 1945, a group of young people started one of the most vibrant literary seasons of the 20th century in Florence, known as Florentine Hermeticisms (or simply Hermeticism). Abstract: In 1865, there was the enactment of the laws of administrative unification for the Kingdom of Italy. On the occasion of the 150th anniversary, the Department of Legal Sciences of the University of Florence organized a study project on the transformations which over the last fifty years have affected the Italian Republic's administrative apparatus and activities. They analysed in its articulated local government and its EU membership. Over nearly two years, the researches have involved more than one hundred and fifty scholars from Italian universities. The results were presented on 15th and 16th October 2015 in Florence, the Italian capital city a hundred and fifty years before, which in 1965 had hosted the conference celebrating the 100th anniversary of the same administrative unification laws. The conducted studies are now published in definitive form and organized into eight volumes. Table of contents I. The organization of public administrations between national state and European integration, edited by Roberto Cavallo Perin, Aristide Police, Fabio Saitta II. Political and territorial cohesion, edited by Gabriella De Giorgi Cezzi, Pier Luigi Portaluri III. Legalization, edited by Barbara Marchetti, Mauro Renna IV. Technification, edited by Stefano Civitarese Matteucci, Luisa Torchia V. Public intervention in the economy, edited by Maurizio Cafagno, Francesco Manganaro VI. Unification and cultural pluralism, edited by Edoardo Chiti, Gianluca Gardini, Aldo Sandulli VII. Abstract: This paper offers a survey of list markers in contemporary Russian, i.e. discourse markers that signal the presence of a list and fulfil specific semantic and pragmatic functions, such as generalization (и все такое 'and things like that'), exemplification (типа 'such as/kind of') or reformulation of the list content (так сказать 'so to speak'). It also explores the structural and functional properties of general extenders within the framework of CxG, focusing particularly on the process of lexicalization and grammaticalization of the discourse marker и все такое 'and things like that'

Abstract: The volume collects the contributions presented at the first Seminar organized in 2014 in Florence by the Section of Intercultural Studies of the Department of Languages, Literatures and Intercultural Studies on the theme "Languages, Literatures and Migrant Cultures". The essays - written by authors from the area of German studies and Germanic philology, Lusitanistics, Hispano-American studies, Sinology and Comparative studies - analyse various aspects of the theme of "migration" in the variety of its expressions: alongside strictly linguistic observations, they investigate the phenomenon of intercultural contact on a social, historical, literary and anthropological level

Abstract: In this thesis we experimentally developed high-resolution groundbreaking imaging techniques and novel methods suitable for nanophotonics materials. The experimental results are carefully supported by theory and numerical calculations. We engineered the propagation of light by exploiting devices that strongly localize electromagnetic fields at the nanoscale. The proposed techniques have a large field of application. We deeply investigated ordered and disordered based single and coupled nano-resonators, called photonicmolecules, and develop a laser-assisted local oxidation of the dielectric environment. These results put the basis for an unprecedented investigation of light behaviour in optical nano-resonators. Therefore, they would pave the way for novel devices that exploit the strong coupling regime between single light emitters and localized optical modes

Abstract: Prison education should be a top priority issue in most societies. Prison conditions must not infringe human rights and dignity and must offer meaningful treatment programmes in order to support inmates in their rehabilitation and reintegration in society. The use of ICTs within a penitentiary context plays a crucial role in that. The present Volume looks at the learning potential in prisons and reports on innovative (e-)learning pathways for basic skills education as designed and tested in Cyprus, Greece, Italy and Romania. Research investigated on what counts as 'educational' in such a complex context and how to combine relevant pieces in a 'learning mosaic' (the broad range of any learning opportunity across it). This Volume argues that such an approach may be adopted in a wider European perspective within the frame of dynamic security

Abstract: This study discusses DPs, Phi-features and Tense in Abyssinian Semitic languages. DPs and TPs have parallel structures. Their subjects are generated within the projection of lexical categories which move to Spec positions of associated non-lexical categories (Fukui 2006). Aspect is indicated by inserting different vowel patterns into the roots of base stems. Tense, however, is indicated by different forms of verb to be (Jelinek 2002). In North Abyssinian Semitic languages, verbs and nouns have similar patterns to indicate plurality and this is due to an economy constraint on the grammar (Siddiqi 2009). Phi-features in the affixes and independent pronouns are closely related (Buccellati 1996). We may assume the development of the latter into the former or vice versa via a clitic stage (Fuß 2005)

Abstract: Following Crimea's incorporation into Russia in March 2014, the Crimean parliament adopted a new constitution granting official status to Russian, Ukrainian and Crimean Tatar. Despite the official multi-ethnicity and multilingualism of Crimea now constitutionally acknowledged, however, there is reason to believe that the formally proclaimed equality of the three languages has not translated into equality in practice. Among the areas where the inequality in language promotion and support is most noticeable, language education policy and language use in public place play a special role

Abstract: Chiara Mastroberti retraces the most decisive moments of Judith Butler's work with the aim of deepening Butler's thoughts on the relationship between political subjection and individual passions. Rereading La vita psichica del potere and Parole che provocano (1997), passing through Vite precarie (2004) and Critica della violenza etica (2005), the author analyses Butler's discussion on fear, paranoia, melancholy and desire, framing it within the philosopher's broader ethical and political reflection. At the core of this reflection, there are the dialectics of "psychic life", oscillating between adherence and resistance to the social norm: passions are the key to reading this text in order to understand the origin and limit of the contemporary subject, its "passivity" and the secret of its survival

Abstract: In early modern England, the birth of a human being with congenital physical deformities was an event which aroused horror and fascination, disgust and morbid curiosity. In a time when modern science was taking its first steps, this kind of prodigy sometimes appeared as a sort of divine punishment for a moral fault, sometimes as a bizarre pastime, or political weapon, or a pre-medical investigation. By deepening such a multifaceted and constantly changing phenomenon, "A Marvellous and Strange Event" tries to build a complex analysis perspective on the English cultural and social history between the 16th and 18th century

Abstract: The enforcement of the sentence in a (re)educational perspective is a highly debated topic in different approaches, including the multidisciplinary ones. In this volume, the topic is discussed from a compensatory perspective, namely through the acknowledgement of the need to prepare educational tools to contrast the 'adverse educational actions', to which the prison population may be exposed, and to the phenomenon of repeated infractions. In addition to the elements of the treatment program (which is structured, intentional, legally regulated and procedure-like), every phase of the sentence enforcement, even those taken for granted, includes an educational value and presents itself as a growth and improvement opportunity for each prisoner. As evidence to the variety of experiences (in the educational sense), this volume collects a series of contributions by professionals from the criminal justice system who support the changing processes of prisoners

The result is a text of pleasant and agile reading. Generations of scholars intersect, who do not belong to any academic hierarchy, and who have shared over the decades the long history and the many fields of research of Enza Biagini, also revealing the methodological rigour and the almost boundless openness that has characterized her school. At the heart of the volume is the theory of literature with its concepts and tools of analysis belonging to the tradition of rhetoric, not to be understood here as the taxonomy of tropes and figures, but as the sum of living instances (linguistic, literary, philosophical, semiotic, ideological) which are the bearers of fundamental questions

Abstract: These days, it seems that many people are concerned with borders, confines, and walls more than ever. We chose "transcending borders" as the theme and title of the volume, hinting at the concept of bridging boundaries, in any possible context and domain, metaphorical or concrete. By proposing this theme, we want to reflect on the opportunities that are to be gained through the overcoming of borders, on what can be accomplished by calling into question old norms, on the implementations of less familiar norms, and on the renegotiation of individual limits and horizons. This collection gathers seven articles on the theme of borders: the first four articles deal with Chinese presence in Italy today; the three articles in the field of Japanese Studies elaborate on the concept of borders in literary terms

Abstract: The volume analyses the representation of ceramic artefacts appearing in some Tuscan artistic works dating back to the 14th and 15th century and aims to combine the data emerging from iconographic sources with those relating to material and written documentation. It also aims to grasp the potential of iconography, trying to understand the extent to which it is possible to identify archaeologically well-defined cultural areas; it also attempts to establish whether the representations of specific details of everyday life correspond to a realistic description of everyday life itself, or rather are a reflection of feelings of curiosity, amazement, ambition or appreciation for the beauty of the objects. The study highlights how iconography is able to integrate our knowledge on the medieval ceramic productions and on the social context of use of specific vascular forms and types

Abstract: For many years, the figure of Silvio Trentin (1885-1944) had been forgotten. Then, between the Seventies and the Eighties, the profile of this highly original jurist, acknowledged as the protagonist of the vast and complex anti-fascist and resistance scene, began to attract the attention of many scholars. This volume, conceived on the occasion of the seventieth anniversary of Trentin's death, aims at offering an articulated portrait of the jurist, with focus on the peculiarities of his juridical formation, the tenacity of his political choices and the richness of his family relationships. The aim of the work is not only celebratory: it is a matter of giving back to the Italian Republic a strong witness of the many battles which preceded its birth, and which can still revive its reasons

Abstract: The paper attempts to examine the relation between the verbal aspect in the Slavic languages and the referential status of nominal arguments of the predicate. As is well known, Slavic languages (except Bulgarian and Macedonian) have not developed articles as a grammatical category. It is suggested that in addition to the well-known means of conveying referential information in these articleless languages - such as word order, use of demonstrative/indefinite pronouns, restrictive relative clauses, case alternations and prosody - the verbal aspect also should be taken into account

Abstract: This work outlines the phenomenon of conversions to Catholicism which took place in Florence between the 17th and 18th century, and starts by reconstructing the history of the House of Catechumens. In the second half of the 17th century, thanks to a noblewoman from Florence's bequest, the Institute offered hospitality to "infidels" of all origins, and the number of conversions increased considerably. Such liberality ended up causing a serious economic crisis, which the Lorraine Grand Dukes tried to solve in the 18th century by restricting the field of action to Tuscan subjects only. However, there was no lack of abuse and interference by clergymen, especially towards Jews

Abstract: Through the analysis of the predetermined verbal forms of the Povest 'vremennych let (11th-12th centuries), this book sheds light on the aspectual meanings of verbs with prefix, in order to verify the degree of evolution of the Slavic-oriental aspectual system in the most ancient phase of its attestation. The study on prefixes and the ways in which they interact with the actional characteristics of the starting verbs allows us to identify the consequences of prefixing at the lexical, actional and aspectual level. Terminative verbs with prefix acquire the resultative value ("protoperfective") and are subjected, in part, to secondary suffixation, a phenomenon that will contribute to the grammaticalization of the aspectual category in Russian and other Slavic languages

Abstract: The bibliography proposed takes into account the historiographical works on Middle Ages (VI-XV centuries) of the years 1950-2010: these are years particularly significant for the development and consolidation of studies relating to Italian (and more generally European) agricultural history. In order to facilitate the consultation, the work is organized into chapters and thematic sections, preceded by a brief explanatory note which gives an account of the criteria used to identify the listed works. The Introduction presents thoughts on the salient moments of the historiographical history at the heart of the contemporary discussion

Abstract: This study analyses the crisis and transformations of theocracy as a political model in Europe in the first half of the 18th century. The work focuses on the transition from a positive and normative seventeenth-century consideration of theocracy, associated with the Jewish people, to its description in the 18th century as a universal, negative and primitive model. To this end, three authors are examined in their role of emblematic figures of this change, namely: Jacques Basnage, John Toland and Giambattista Vico. The study then highlights a radicalisation phase in mid-eighteenth-century France in the works by Nicolas Antoine Boulanger, and ends with the description of Boulanger's theocracy in Diderot and d'Alembert's Encyclopédie

Abstract: Investigating the contacts between Italians and Irish over the decades separating the two world wars is like opening a small Pandora's box, creating a lively and unexpected portrait of the great number of political and cultural exchanges between two countries. Italy has always been an important cultural and spiritual reference point for Ireland; Ireland, on the other hand, has exerted a particular appeal among the Italians, appearing as a distant and mysterious place, a country of saints and heroes. Two geographically distant yet culturally close nations, whose plurality of relationships are interesting to investigate and deepen. This work brings to light an unexpectedly rich picture of a small world of passions and entanglements, of patriotism and opportunism, uniting two countries which have always been tormented by the same complex: being on the edge of political games in Europe

Abstract: Adverse drug reactions (ADRs) have a significant impact on the patient's health. The purpose of this PhD thesis was to analyse the impact of ADRs on the admissions to the emergency room, using the data obtained from the MEREAFaPS study. Elderly patients resulted the most exposed group to ADRs. Gastrointestinal disorders were the most commonly reported adverse reactions. Acetylsalicylic acid and warfarin were the most reported drugs. 17% of serious ADRs and 32% of the resulting deaths were classified as avoidable. Elderly age was found to be the main risk factor associated with ADRs. It is therefore important to underline the need for a more careful use of drugs in this group of patients

Abstract: Like a two-faced Janus, Siro Ferrone carried out both research on theatre and theatre criticism, combining academic research and stage experience. His reviewer activity, carried out without interruptions, is now for the first time transcribed and organically collected in a volume. The articles, which appeared on the pages of "l'Unità-Toscana", are today an important source for the analysis of significant shows staged in the main Tuscan theatres between 1975 and 1983. The result is the documentation of a period of fertile and avant-garde theatrical production, here retraced through the aware and illuminating testimonies of one of the main Italian historians of performing arts

Abstract: The author discusses the distribution of the reflexive anaphora sebja and the middle voice affix -sja/-s' in Russian. The Russian data are discussed assuming that in languages where the middle voice morphology can encode reflexivity, anaphors can be canceled in standard object position, where Accusative Case is assigned. This entails that direct object anaphors, when realized, are not in the structural position where they receive Accusative Case; it is argued that they can surface in Focus positions. The final part of the paper is dedicated to the analysis of the formal status of the middle voice affix

Abstract: Parole e cose ("Words and Things") collects the works by Silvano Boscherini (1920-2010), Full Professor of Latin Literature in Florence, published on magazine during his long academic activity. The volume is a proof of Boscherini's scientific interests and, in addition to being a tribute to the man and the scholar, proposes still valid contributions in terms of knowledge and, above all, in terms of method. The works are divided into the five fundamental areas analysed by Boscherini over the years, even if a single article cannot always be uniquely placed in a single section, precisely because of the global and historicist method with which Boscherini has always faced the study and the examination of the texts. Within each section the works are proposed in chronological order

Starting from the latest version, the scholars have undertaken a review and expansion that led to this manual. The text is aimed at bachelor students of the courses in Mathematics, Physics and Engineering. Abstract: In light of the dramatic events which have been shocking Ukraine since November 2013, this work's itinerary aims at functioning as a basis for the formulation of new contact points, for a dialogue between traditions and cultures which nowadays are again being shaken by the events of history. The author examines the self-identification paths of the literary phenomenon of Russian language in Ukraine. With the help of interviews with important representatives of the Ukrainian Russian-speaking literary scene, made on the eve of the so-called 'Ukrainian crisis', the author shall closely observe the origins of the marginal nature of these 'post-Soviet hybrid narratives'

Abstract: This volume examines how the definition of art is not to be considered the prerogative of philosophical and aesthetic disciplines, but should rather assume decisive importance for the legal protection of the art object. Based on this premise, this work retraces the evolution of the concept of art and its limits in the case law of US courts, focusing on the constitutional aspect of the freedom of artistic expression. This volume notes how the cases in which judges must decide whether or not an object constitutes a work of art can say much more about the nature of judgement than about the nature of art itself

Abstract: Musint 2 is a text to be read, accompanying the new MUSINT II website, following and innovating the general features of the previous MUSINT. But, as the two on-line projects differ in both technical aspects and content while maintaining similar principles and purposes, so the new volume takes on a role that makes it a novelty more suited to the progress that characterises the archaeological disciplines under a scientific and didactic perspective. The division into three sections is still maintained. The first section contains a series of works directly related to the MUSINT II site. There is an increase in the number of presentations relating to technical and educational aspects, which are considered an innovation of the new site, compared with scientific contributions intended in a more traditional sense. The second section presents an array of significant works of virtual musealisation, specifically chosen from the most varied areas, and tries to underline their educational approach. The third section is developed in continuity with the previous edition, although it presents new features in the choice of the selected research works: in fact, it selects topics which were already proposed in their experimental phase, as well as new research that have been identified over the years through the wider knowledge on the possibilities of a digital and interactive museology

Abstract: This book challenges critical approaches that argue for Giacomo Leopardi's and Samuel Beckett's pessimism and nihilism. Such approaches stem from the quotation of Leopardi in Beckett's monograph Proust, as part of a discussion about the removal of desire. Nonetheless, in contrast to ataraxia as a form of ablation of desire, the desire of and for the Other is here presented as central in the two authors' oeuvres. Desire in Leopardi and Beckett is read as lying at the cusp between the theories of Jacques Lacan and Emmanuel Levinas, a desire that splits as much as it moulds the subject when called to address the Other (inspiring what Levinas terms 'infinity' as opposed to 'totality,' an infinity pitted against the nothingness crucial to pessimist and nihilist readings)

Abstract: The years 1676 and 1774 marked two turning points in the social and legal treatment of madness in England. In 1676, London's Bethlehem Hospital expanded in grand new premises, and in 1774 the Madhouses Act attempted to limit confinement of the insane. This study explores almost a century of the English history of madness through the texts of five poets who were considered mentally troubled according to contemporary standards: James Carkesse, Anne Finch, William Collins, Christopher Smart and William Cowper were hospitalized, sequestered or exiled from society. Their works cope with representations of insanity, medical definitions or practices, imputed illness, and the judging eye of the 'sane other', shedding new light on the dis/continuities in the notion of madness of this period

Abstract: Regarding the historical present in Czech narrative the author proposes to distinguish three main modes: (i) the narrative present, which follows the same aspectual opposition system of the past tense narration mode; (ii) the tabular present, which neutralizes the aspectual opposition in favour of the imperfective aspect; (iii) the complementary distribution, which alternates past perfective and present imperfective. This assumption allows to reconsider the hypothesis of a trend to neutralize aspectual opposition in the historical present in Czech (Bondarko 1958)

Abstract: When Courant prepared the text of his 1942 address to the American Mathematical Society for publication, he added a two-page Appendix to illustrate how the variational methods first described by Lord Rayleigh could be put to wider use in potential theory. Choosing piecewise-linear approximants on a set of triangles which he called elements, he dashed off a couple of two-dimensional examples and the finite element method was born. ... Finite element activity in electrical engineering began in earnest about 1968-1969. A paper on waveguide analysis was published in Alta Frequenza in early 1969, giving the details of a finite element formulation of the classical hollow waveguide problem. It was followed by a rapid succession of papers on magnetic fields in saturable materials, dielectric loaded waveguides, and other well-known boundary value problems of electromagnetics. ... In the decade of the eighties, finite element methods spread quickly. In several technical areas, they assumed a dominant role in field problems. P.P. Silvester, San Miniato (PI), Italy, 1992 Early in the nineties the International Workshop on Finite Elements for Microwave Engineering started. This volume contains the history of the Workshop and the Proceedings of the 13th edition, Florence (Italy), 2016 . The 14th Workshop will be in Cartagena (Colombia), 2018

Abstract: This second volume of Quaderni "Cesare Alfieri" offers a consideration on some basic aspects of our academic system. Among the many topics worthy of attention, the Scientific Committee has decided to put the accent on the theme of the relationship between universities and economic and social development. In response to the transformations and the dramatic downsizing of the higher education system, how is it possible to affirm the centrality of the education of the "human capital", aimed at the growth and cohesion of society? The essays gathered in the volume offer, each one from its own point of view, interesting insights and points of discussion on how, at the present time, universities can contribute to the economic and social development of a country in which territorial and social inequalities are deepening, despite reduced public resources, limited degree of autonomy and uncertain relations with other national and local actors

Abstract: In this book, Francesca Nencioni uses semantics to reconstruct, with skill and intelligence, the 'characters' and 'specimens' of the Hermetic prose (Parronchi, I giorni sensibili; Luzi, Biografia e Ebe; Bigongiari, La donna miriade; Gatto, La sposa bambina), proposing a new way of reading the works which marked the early Hermetic period in Florence. Using stylistic tools, analysis of language, rhythm and melody, and a comparative perspective shifting continuously among the genres, the author gives new semantics to the category of absence (through female metamorphosis, transience and death), and explores the coordinates of time (the hours of day, the movements of stars and planets, the alternation of seasons) and space (the four elements, the beloved places and the real landscapes), then combines synchronic investigation with an excursus on the study of semantic variables in the two editions of Biografia e Ebe and La sposa bambina

Abstract: La spugna è la mia anima. Omaggio a Piero Ceccucci ("The sponge is my soul. Tribute do Pietro Ceccucci") is a work born from the sincere affection and esteem of many Italian and foreign colleagues who enthusiastically welcomed the idea of paying homage to their friend and colleague Piero Ceccucci and to his long career as a university professor of Portuguese and Brazilian language and literature at various Italian universities, such as Perugia, Milan, University "Bocconi" of Milan, Genoa and Florence. This volume aims to be a fair recognition of the commitment and dedication that Prof. Piero Ceccucci has addressed to the teaching of Portuguese language and literature in Italy, but also to remind him the gratitude of University of Florence, to which, we are sure, he will always be tied

Abstract: Download the free epub version Listen to the interview on Radio Treccia Ischia TV Is it possible to disseminate science through social networks? Facebook was created to share thoughts, ideas, sensations and anything mild and fleeting; certainly not for the dissemination of scientific and academic knowledge. On the contrary... by combining the obligatory conciseness of a post, the taste for fantasy at the service of the dissemination of scientific knowledge, and the socialization of such a widespread means of communication, there is a metamorphosis turning the irreversible, ineffable volatility of a social network into the lapidary and realistic fixity of this book of digital cameos, dedicated to many aspects of chemistry, a science which is so inextricably enveloped in our daily life. A "chemical" Rector disguises himself as Alice and ventures into a land, the Facebook land, where the wonders coming from imaginative journeys in matter, in its laws and in its imponderable enigmatic nature, take shape

The focus is mainly on spatial deixis offering interesting insights as far as the evolution of the Chakavian variety of Croatian across the past centuries is concerned. A statistical survey shows a significant difference between the old forms and the deictic system of modern Croatian. This kind of evolutionary development in the Croatian deictic system can be explained in terms of a semantic shift due to the obsolescence of the original proximal deictic se

Abstract: This paper attempts to identify the factors that either limit the passivization and decausation of Russian idioms containing transitive verbs of movement. Most of these verbs are highly subject to passivization in free structures and produce causative-decausative pairs. But in phraseological units their transformation is not always possible. The purpose of this research is to reveal the semantic and grammatical features that restrict the above transformations, to identify their primary or auxiliary role and to determine the existence of common features that resist both types of transformation

The study of the expression of purposive interclausal relation revealed that loose coordination prevails in Russian while tighter subordination dominates in Italian (Biagini 2012). However, for the expression of concessive relation, the results do not confirm a predominance of juxtaposition or coordination in Russian when compared with Italian

At the same time it presents the contexts where adults learn: the organized contexts, such as the institutions and services, and the informal contexts. The book is one of a series dedicated to adult learning and education developed under the auspices of ESRALE (European Studies and Research in Adult Learning and Education) an EU supported project. Abstract: The so-called "monochromes" on marble are twelve paintings on marble slabs from the Roman age, mostly coming from Herculaneum, and are now preserved at the National Archaeological Museum of Naples and at the Kunsthistorisches Museum of Vienna. These paintings were included in several publications. Despite that, they continued to raise many questions and there was a lack of studies focusing entirely on them. Furthermore, it had barely been clarified that, despite the name "monochromes", these works are completely polychrome. By combining the archaeological data and the information obtained from the non-invasive archaeometrical analysis, it was possible to achieve brand new results, which allowed for a better understanding of some aspects of these works, such as their iconography, the used pigments used and the clients' choices

Abstract: The article focuses on the main uses of secondary imperfective verbs with the suffix -yva-/-iva- in Early East Slavic texts dated 11th-14th centuries. The verbs with this suffix are used in all different contexts where the imperfective verbal aspect is required. The examples from the texts show a more frequent occurrence of the verbal forms with the suffix in dialogues, that is in passages involving oral communication contexts. Only in the later centuries the suffix will also take the particular function of expressing the "iterative mode of action" (iterativnyj sposob dejstvija)

Abstract: Leo Tolstoy's works are not only masterpieces of world literature, but also mirrors of their time, of the socio-cultural transformations which took place in Tsarist Russia; it is from this perspective that, in this work, this great writer's production is analysed. In particular, the author examines the evolution of the institution of marriage in the second half of the 19th century in Russia, starting from the reading of Family Happiness , Anna Karenina and The Kreutzer Sonata. If Family happiness preludes to the crisis of the arranged marriage, its implosion is beautifully described in Anna Karenina . Anna announces the definitive death of this institution when she defies the society of her time by not hiding her adultery and, on the contrary, by exhibiting it and trying to legitimize it.The Kreutzer Sonata, lastly, demonstrates the successful overcoming of the aristocratic marriage model, replaced by the bourgeois one

The literary and artistic texts analyzed here have been shaped by these author's ruminations on social and psychological marginalization, a process that S. Boym has called 'reflective nostalgia' and that the authors of this volume also refer to as 'toska'

Abstract: The Models and Analysis of Vocal Emissions with Biomedical Applications (MAVEBA) workshop came into being in 1999 from the particularly felt need of sharing know-how, objectives and results between areas that until then seemed quite distinct such as bioengineering, medicine and singing. MAVEBA deals with all aspects concerning the study of the human voice with applications ranging from the neonate to the adult and elderly. Over the years the initial issues have grown and spread also in other aspects of research such as occupational voice disorders, neurology, rehabilitation, image and video analysis. MAVEBA takes place every two years always in Firenze, Italy

Abstract: The purpose of this book is to highlight the relevance of the international Open Access (OA) movement, which aims at supporting and promoting strategies for the dissemination of scientific research products with the support of network technologies and open access policies. The OA Institutional Repositories (IRs) will be presented within the framework of: some guidelines, research evaluation mechanisms, intellectual property issues, long-term storage, Data and Process Management Plan and Trusted Digital Repositories. The work will also present a survey on a sample of 23 (Italian and international) digital repositories in support of communication and of open access to online research content. On the basis of this investigation, a ToolKit will be presented which could be useful for programming and monitoring several different features of an IR. Subsequently, the reader will be presented with a metadata scheme for the description of the scientific research products in IRs, which takes into consideration the Guidelines for the creation and management of metadata in Institutional Repositories (CRUI, 2012) and the Linked Open Data-enabled Bibliographical Data Recommendations (Subirats, Zeng, 2015). Metadata enabled as limit of detection (LOD) data will play a key role in qualifying the semantic profile of the properties of the considered metadata and, consequently, of the information resources they represent. They will also contribute to the enhancement of semantic interoperability and to the online promotion of collaborative dynamics of scientific research content on an Italian and international level, strengthening the effectiveness and efficiency of research itself

Abstract: Architetture nel tempo represents the awareness of the duration, permanence and authenticity of places along the centuries and in their continuous contemporaneity, entrusted to the preservation which passes on to the future, to the dialogue between ancient and modern architecture and to the restoration project. Therefore, they are not only excellent artefacts, but also everyday architectures, artefacts born of necessity as well as of symbolic and grandiloquent will, which have however survived the passing of time in order to acquire the right to become memory and future, in order to exhibit a citizenship which is equally recognized at the borders of past and present, in order to become that material for history which, through research and investigation in the field, turns itself into history

Abstract: This book arises from a three-year comparative research program concerning co-operative enterprises in Australia and Italy. The book explores the historical development, legal framework and the peak organisations of co-operatives in the two countries. Specific comparative chapters focus on consumer, credit, and worker-producer co-operatives. The book deepens the analysis of co-operatives by containing chapters that examine specific theoretical and empirical issues such as the theory of co-operative firms as collective entrepreneurial action. Monographic chapters include more in depth analysis of specific typologies of co-operatives, such as social and community oriented co-operatives, some of which were created to contrast organized crime in Southern Italy. The book concludes with an assessment of the implications of the project for public policy

Abstract: This research offers an integral analysis of the aesthetic thought of the director, playwright and art theorist Nikolaj Nikolaevic Evreinov. The work focuses on the analysis of the treaty The revelation of art, written in Paris in the 1930s, which represents the greatest testimony of the author's research in the aesthetic field. Henceforth, a connection is offered between the known aspects of Evreinov's theatrical thought, relating to the period of the avant-garde in Russia, and others, of a broader nature, which have long been precluded from being known. Through insights on the Russian theatrical history of the early 20th century, reflections touching textual criticism, the history of aesthetic thought and Russian criticism, the complex figure of an artist emerges against the background of the culture expressed by post-revolutionary Russian emigration. An artist who, as an intellectual, begins a dialogue with the Western European cultural tradition. This book thus intends to restore the visibility, as well as an exegetical and historiographic completeness, of Evreinov's rich legacy as a writer, a philosopher and a critic

Abstract: Akrothinia collects the contributions of twenty-three young scholars, with the aim of creating an overall picture of the lines of investigation and of the interests which, in recent years, have animated research in the field of Prehistory and Protohistory of the Aegean area, as seen from the perspective of 'pupils', not of 'masters'. The broad horizon of archaeological and philological themes, as well as the new insights which can be noticed in the works of this volume, clearly demonstrate the liveliness and, at the same time, the value of the tradition of Aegean studies in Italy. In this sense, the common thread linking all the contributions is, on one hand, the balance between the value recognized by the authors and the long tradition of Italian studies and, on the other, the positive interest in projects used as a test for the ability to identify new prospects for investigation
