    Kurzfassung: Nicht erst seit dem Aufkommen des Begriffs der »Cancel Culture« scheint es, als könne man schlicht nicht mehr miteinander reden. Die unterschiedlichen Konzeptionen von Ziel und Methode, also von der Strategie gesellschaftlicher Auseinandersetzungen, variieren so stark, dass sie schlicht nicht mehr kommensurabel sind. Diese Situation lässt sich als das Resultat einer langen Geschichte strategischer Entwürfe und Gegenentwürfe begreifen. Christopher Jakob Rudoll gibt anhand der Beispiele von Marxismus, Katholizismus und Feminismus einen systematischen Überblick über Debattenkulturen in Theorie und Praxis seit den 1920er-Jahren - und hilft somit, die aktuelle Sprachlosigkeit besser zu verstehen

    Kurzfassung: The Artsakh/Nagorno-Karabakh region is populated mostly by ethnic Armenians. Cultural traces from over two millennia indicate their long history on site. Due to the armed conflict with Azerbaijan and the violent takeover of the Republic of Artsakh by the Azerbaijani government on September 20, 2023, these cultural assets are currently at massive risk. This volume documents an interdisciplinary conference that took place in Armenia in 2022. It offers the most complete trilingual overview to date on the history, culture and global contacts of this unshielded area in the Southern Caucasus
    Kurzfassung: Die Region Arzach/Berg-Karabach ist mehrheitlich von ethnischen Armeniern besiedelt. Kulturelle Spuren aus gut zwei Jahrtausenden weisen auf ihre lange Geschichte vor Ort hin. Durch die kriegerischen Auseinandersetzungen mit Aserbaidschan und die gewaltsame Übernahme der Republik Arzach durch die aserbaidschanische Regierung am 20. September 2023 ist dieses Kulturgut gerade massiv gefährdet. Der vorliegende Band dokumentiert eine interdisziplinäre Tagung, die 2022 in Armenien stattgefunden hat. Er bietet den bisher vollständigsten dreisprachigen Überblick über die Geschichte, Kultur und globalen Kontakte dieser schutzlosen Gegend im südlichen Kaukasus

    Kurzfassung: Spiel und Theater sind vielfältig verbunden, aber solange der Spielbegriff mit Harmlosigkeit assoziiert ist, nimmt er dem Theater Schärfe und Wirksamkeit. Gunter Lösel fragt deshalb nach einer Begriffserweiterung, die auch die dunkle Seite des Spiels umfasst. Zwischen Spiel, Wirklichkeit und Fiktion entwickelt er ein »Dreiweltenmodell des Theaters« und geht der Frage nach, warum die Spezies Mensch ein performatives Spiel entwickelt hat, in welchem sie sich negative Handlungen oder konflikthafte Situationen vor Augen führt.     Kurzfassung: In this book, the author attempts to debunk some myths about Western exceptionalism and to evaluate critically the characteristics that make the West superior to the Rest. The author suggests that the West does not represent a homogenous group of countries and that the most common characteristic of the core Western countries is imperialism. The author goes on to provide a detailed critique of the proclaimed characteristics of Western countries, including democracy, human rights, judicial independence, transparency, the rule of law, and exclusive contribution to science and technology. A critique is presented of the views expressed by Samuel Huntington, Francis Fukuyama, and Niall Ferguson, arguing that they do not recognize the historical fact that civilizations rise and fall. It is argued that the Western economic system, which is based on neoliberalism, has adverse consequences for democracy, morality, and peace, as well as inequality, poverty, and homelessness. Written in a simple but powerful language, this book is a must read for those interested in international relations and anyone interested in current affairs. Imad Moosa is Professor of Economics at Kuwait University. He has also held academic positions at RMIT, Monash University, La Trobe University, and the University of Sheffield.     Kurzfassung: This open access book explores the ambiguity of East Central Europe during the twentieth century, examining local contexts through a comparative and transnational reworking of theoretical models in postcolonial studies. Since the early modern period, East Central Europe has arguably been an object of imperialism. However, at the same time East Central European states have been seen to be colonial actors, with individuals from the region often associating themselves with colonial discourses in extra-European contexts. Spanning a broad time period until after the Second World War and covering the governance of Communism and its legacies, the book examines how cultural and literary narratives from East Central Europe have created and revised historical knowledge, making use of collective memory to feed into identity models.

    Kurzfassung: The Global IR research programme promulgates a borderless ecology of cultures that has only an inside without an outside. This borderless ecology of cultures reinvents the human condition (including the condition of ‘the international’) as perpetually interconnected at the level of consciousness. While Western-centric IR theories depend on (neo-)Kantian philosophies to emphasize the time-space bounded identities of human beings living in visibly divided phenomenal worlds, the de-Kantian philosophies of the Global IR research programme – exemplified by the Tianxia, Advaita, and Nishida Kitaro’s Buddhism-inspired theories – recuperate the temporally-spatially indivisible phenomenal-noumenal flow of human life, thereby facilitating back-and-forth movement between the Westdominated ‘one world’ and the non-West-embodied ‘many worlds’. The central objective of the book is to demonstrate how this back-and-forth movement offers opportunities to conceive of and found a new world order that recognizes the temporally-spatially indivisible human condition on earth. The book delineates a set of guiding principles to promote an innovative practice of theory-building and policy-making that transcends the geo-centric limitations of knowledgeproduction and knowledge-application, thereby establishing the futuristic foundation of the Global IR research programme.     Kurzfassung: In diesem Open-Access-Buch geht der Autor der Frage nach, warum Technik als wesentlicher Bestandteil der Kultur in der Bildung nur eine untergeordnete Bedeutung hat und begründet mit Hilfe technikphilosophischer Analysen einen Kulturreihenansatz für die Auswahl von Inhalten für den Technikunterricht. Aus dem Doppelauftrag von Schule, Persönlichkeitsbildung und Enkulturation wird zunächst ein Interaktionsmodell für Bildung und Erziehung abgeleitet. Das Problem der Inhaltsauswahl jeder Fachdidaktik wird mit einem Modell zur Verknüpfung von Allgemeiner Didaktik und Fachwissenschaften gelöst. Darin wird die Technikphilosophie als fehlende Bezugswissenschaft identifiziert, um Aussagen zum Wesen der Technik zu ermöglichen. Durch die Analyse technikphilosophischer Ansätze wird der Technikbegriff um eine ästhetische und eine Sinn- und Wertperspektive erweitert. Aus diesem Technikbegriff ergeben sich pädagogische Perspektiven für den Technikunterricht, die schließlich über einen Kulturreihenansatz zu einem Kern Technischer Allgemeinbildung führen. Durch den Kulturreihenansatz wird begründet umrissen, wie die kulturelle Bedeutung der Technik bildungswirksam werden kann. Der Autor Thomas-Hugo Möllers ist Lehrer (Physik, Technik), Lehrerausbilder am Zentrum für schulpraktische Lehrerausbildung, Oberhausen, und arbeitete an den Bildungsstandards und dem gemeinsamen Referenzrahmen Technik (VDI) mit.

    Kurzfassung: Dieser Open-Access-Sammelband hinterfragt, wie sich internationale Kulturzusammenarbeit zwischen Ländern unterschiedlicher Kultursysteme und -traditionen erreichen lässt. In Deutschland ist Auswärtige Kulturpolitik von dem Gedanken geleitet, dass globale Herausforderungen Multilateralismus erfordern. Im chinesischen Diskurs dagegen finden andere Kernbegriffe wie z.B. „Tianxia“ Verwendung, die im nicht-chinesischen Kontext einer Interpretation bedürfen. Um der Differenz – aber auch den Gemeinsamkeiten – auf den Grund zu gehen, untersuchen Wissenschaftler*innen und Praktiker*innen aus China und Deutschland Selbst- und Fremdwahrnehmungen sowie Kooperationen in kulturellen Begegnungen. Auf diese Weise sollen Grundlagen für ein besseres gegenseitiges Verständnis sowie für kulturelle Kooperation zwischen beiden Ländern ermöglicht werden. Die Herausgeber*innen Prof. Dr. Chunchun Hu leitet den Masterstudiengang Europa-Studien an der Shanghai Academy of Global Governance and Area Studies, Shanghai International Studies University.     Kurzfassung: Monuments have always been controversial. In recent decades, however, the debate about the interpretation and validity of monuments in public space has intensified, as their cultural practices of remembrance have been put to the test against the backdrop of a diverse society and related issues of (dis)power. The focus was and is primarily on monuments that are perceived as controversial, which were and are no longer treated only communicatively, but also performatively and interventively in the form of monumental changes. Questions about the effects of monuments and how to deal with them have been addressed primarily in the humanities and cultural studies. This interdisciplinary anthology aims to build on this and, in addition to historical, political or philosophical perspectives, also includes perspectives that broaden the discourse through contributions from law, theology and art studies. They put up for discussion their views on how to deal with controversial monuments in diverse societies
    Kurzfassung: Denkmäler waren schon immer Streitobjekte. In den letzten Jahrzehnten jedoch verschärften sich die Auseinandersetzung um Deutung und Geltung von Denkmälern im öffentlichen Raum. Ihre erinnerungskulturellen Praktiken wurden vor dem Hintergrund einer heterogenen Gesellschaft und entsprechenden (Ohn-)Machtsfragen auf den Prüfstand gestellt. Im Fokus standen und stehen dabei vor allem als strittig empfundene Denkmäler, mit denen nicht mehr nur kommunikativ, sondern in Form von Denkmalveränderungen auch performativ-eingreifend umgegangen wurde und wird. Fragen zur Wirkung von und zum Umgang mit Denkmälern wurden bislang vorwiegend in den Geistes- und Kulturwissenschaften verhandelt. Der interdisziplinäre Sammelband möchte hieran anknüpfen und beinhaltet neben historischen, politischen oder philosophischen Perspektiven auch den Diskurs erweiternde Aspekte durch Beiträge aus der Rechtswissenschaft, der Theologie sowie der Kunstwissenschaft. Sie stellen ihre Sicht auf Fragen nach dem Umgang mit strittigen Denkmälern in heterogenen Gesellschaften zur Diskussion

    Kurzfassung: The volume aims to fit into the existing studies in Italy and Portugal on the Portuguese 18th century, however describing the 18th century from a new, inclusive (and no more separatist), point of view between Portugal, Macao (in the south of China) and Brazil. The related insight does not have the claim to completeness, but offers an overview, allowing the lector to range over three Lusitanian territories. According to this principle of completeness, the volume is divided in three chapters within which historical, iconographical and literary themes of the 18th century are illustrated. The volume higlights historical facts, literary works, also through an European view of the same period, that have marked the Portuguese, Asian and Brazilian 18th century.

    Kurzfassung: This book examines prisons and imprisonment. Historically, prisons and prisoners have been a source of interest to the general public. However, despite near universal acceptance of imprisonment as a feature of society, the reality of prison life, and the effects it has on individuals and communities, remain a mystery to many.     Kurzfassung: The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) adopted by the UN in 2015 have influenced the actions of international and intergovernmental organisations and governments around the world, and have dictated priorities for international aid spending. Culture, including heritage, is often presented as fundamental to addressing the SDGs: since 2010, the United Nations has adopted no fewer than five major policy recommendations that assert its importance as a driver and enabler of development. Yet, heritage is marginalized from the Sustainable Development Goals.0Rethinking Heritage for Sustainable Development constitutes a substantial and original assessment of whether and how heritage has contributed to three key dimensions of sustainable development (namely poverty reduction, gender equality and environmental sustainability) within the context of its marginalisation from the Sustainable Development Goals and from previous international development agendas.0Sophia Labadi adopts a novel, inclusive, large-scale and systematic approach, providing the first comprehensive history of the international approaches on culture (including heritage) for development, from 1970 to the present day. This book is also the first to assess the negative and positive impacts of all the international projects implemented in sub-Saharan Africa by a consortium of UN organisations that aimed to provide evidence for the contribution of heritage for development in time for the negotiation of the SDGs. This book is about the knowledge of plants and where that knowledge came from. How did people use earth and plants in ancient times, and what did they know about their nutritional or medicinal properties? From which plants one could make dyes, such as indigo, woad and dyer’s madder? Is it possible to determine that through technical research today? Which plants could be found in a ninth-century monastery garden, and what is the symbolic significance of plants in secular and religious literature?     Kurzfassung: Dass wir alle in einer gemeinsamen Wirklichkeit leben, setzen wir meist unhinterfragt voraus. Sehen Andere die Welt dann doch einmal anders, mag es uns scheinen, als sähen sie diese einfach nicht so, wie sie wirklich ist. Schwerer fällt uns anzuerkennen, dass andere zuweilen in ganz anderen Wirklichkeiten unterwegs sind als wir selbst. - Tom Poljansek zeigt, wie sich die Vorstellung einer Pluralität menschlicher Wirklichkeiten mit der Annahme einer wahrnehmungsunabhängigen Realität vereinbaren lässt, ohne sich in einen Relativismus der vielen Wirklichkeiten zu verlaufen. In Auseinandersetzung mit »kontinentalen« und »analytischen« Ansätzen legt er eine elegante Theorie menschlicher Wirklichkeiten vor, die konstruktivistische und realistische, phänomenologische und naturalistische Motive unerwartet miteinander verbindet

Sonja Engel und Dominik Schrage widmen sich der Analyse von Spießerschmähungen aus historisch-soziologischer Perspektive und zeichnen die Genealogie des Spießerverdikts nach, indem sie sie ins 19. Jahrhundert zurückverfolgen. Die Invektiven gegen Philister, Klein- und Spießbürger als Sozialfiguren der gesellschaftlichen Mitte erweisen sich dabei als relevante Momente der Etablierung und Veränderung von Vorstellungen sozialer Ordnung, die bis in die Gegenwart Wirkung entfalten

    Kurzfassung: Brasilien gehörte in der Nachkriegszeit zu den aufstrebenden Ländern, mit denen die junge Bundesrepublik kulturpolitische Verbindungen etablierte. Anhand der vielfältigen Modernitätsbestrebungen in Brasilien und Deutschland analysiert und vergleicht Susanne Neubauer die Verflechtungen zwischen Museumspolitiken, (Re-)Demokratisierungsbestrebungen und dem disziplinübergreifenden Diskurs um das Menschenbild nach der Zäsur des Zweiten Weltkriegs. Aus außereuropäischer Perspektive wirft sie einen Blick auf die Wertungen des Menschen in den kulturellen Umwelten und beleuchtet damit Mechanismen der Entwicklung westlicher Kanonisierungen der modernen Kunst.

    Kurzfassung: This book, based on field research in the West African country of The Gambia, explores how domestic gun control is shaped by international efforts and how local actors interact with international organizations or opt not to do so. The book also shows how the question of who can have what kind of gun under what circumstances is an intrinsic question to modern societies across the world, but it is seldom one that is addressed in sub-Saharan Africa except in cases of post-conflict countries. Small arms control and gun control are often treated as separate efforts, with the former the domain of international actors such as the United Nations and the latter being of concern to the domestic politics of countries such as the United States. By focusing on a country that has never seen the outbreak of a civil war, the book is able to disentangle the complex roots of gun control in Africa, its origins in colonial era legislation, its reverberations across social life, and how it shapes contemporary understandings of groups ranging for security guards to hunters. Niklas Hultin is Assistant Professor in the Global Affairs Program at George Mason University, USA.

    Kurzfassung: 'Douglas Janoff draws from his wide-ranging diplomatic career, extensive research and rigorous scholarship to provide a highly engaging and accessible exploration of the mainstreaming, complexities and contradictions of LGBTQ+ advocacy in contemporary Western diplomacy. Janoff's book is a much-needed addition to the expanding field of queer international relations and is a thoughtful and useful contribution both for academic scholars and diplomatic practitioners' —Daniel Conway is Senior Lecturer in Politics and International Relations, University of Westminster, UK This book is the first study of multilateral LGBT human rights diplomacy viewed from the perspective of its practitioners: diplomats, LGBT activists, human rights experts and multilateral specialists. It demonstrates how diplomats and advocates work to promote LGBT rights on the world stage, often using Western constructs of sexual and gender identity. In turn, these efforts have triggered conflict and polarization: opposing states often deploy cultural, religious and moral discourses to minimize LGBT rights as a “legitimate” human right. The author, a seasoned Canadian foreign service officer, human rights negotiator and former community activist and researcher, uses insider perspectives to critically assess both bilateral and multilateral diplomatic engagement on LGBT human rights issues. Janoff’s research involved participation in UN meetings in Geneva and New York and 29 interviews with diplomats, human rights advocates and experts, and representatives from the UN and other inter-governmental organizations. Although LGBT issues have been mainstreamed into many areas of bilateral and multilateral human rights policy, his research found a considerable gap: a coordinated diplomatic and civil society approach is needed to more effectively address ongoing human rights violations against LGBT people around the world. Douglas Victor Janoff was appointed to Canada’s Foreign Service in 2009: his career has included diplomatic postings to Washington, D.C., Afghanistan and Pakistan. He is the author of Pink Blood: Homophobic Violence in Canada (2005) and has a PhD in Canadian Studies from Carleton University, Canada.

    Kurzfassung: Shared Margins tells of writers, writing, and literary milieus in Alexandria, Egypt's second city. It de-centres cosmopolitan avant-gardes and secular-revolutionary aesthetics that have been intensively documented and studied since 2011. Instead, it offers a fieldwork-based account of various milieus and styles, and their common grounds and lines of division. Structured in two parts, Shared Margins gives an account of literature as a social practice embedded in milieus that at once enable and limit literary imagination, and of a life-worldly experience of plurality in absence of pluralism that marks literary engagements with the intimate and social realities of Alexandria after 2011. Literary writing, this book argues, has marginality as an at once enabling and limiting condition. It provides shared spaces of imaginary excess that may go beyond the taken-for-granted of a societal milieu, and yet are never unlimited. Literary imagination is part and parcel of such social conflicts and transformations, its role being neither one of resistance against power nor of guidance towards norms, but rather one of open-ended complicity

Führen Diversitäts-Politiken zu einem höheren Maß gesellschaftlicher Teilhabe unterrepräsentierter Gruppen? Oder ist »kulturelle Vielfalt« nur ein beschwichtigendes Etikett, das die sozialen Ungleichheiten in Institutionen eher verschleiert als benennt? Dieser Band beleuchtet die affektiven Dynamiken kultureller Diversifizierung in zentralen institutionellen Feldern wie Gesundheit, Bildung, Medien und Kultur. Er zeigt, dass es bei kultureller Diversifizierung nicht nur um die Reform von Institutionen, sondern um eine gesamtgesellschaftliche Neuorientierung in einer stark polarisierten Öffentlichkeit geht. Diesen Selbst- und Weltdeutungspraktiken spürt Thilo Neidhöfer am Beispiel ihrer Ehe nach.

    Kurzfassung: The first half of the volume is devoted to the exposition of the ancient evidence, literary and iconographic, for the traditions of Heracles' life and deeds. After a chapter each on the hero's childhood and his madness, the canonical cause of his Twelve Labors, each of the Labors themselves receives detailed treatment in a dedicated chapter. The "Parerga" or "Side-Labors" are then treated in a similar level of detail in seven further chapters. In the second half, the Heracles tradition is analysed from a range of thematic perspectives. After consideration of the contrasting projections of the figure across the major literary genres, epic, tragedy, comedy, philosophy, and in the iconographic register, a number of his myth-cycle's diverse fils rouges are pursued.

    Kurzfassung: Die Autorinnen und Autoren des vorliegenden Sammelbandes untersuchen Umbrüche, Krisen und Widerstände in der Geschichte sowie der Gegenwart der Türkei. Im Zentrum steht die Frage, wie gesellschaftlicher und politischer Wandel in Kunst und Literatur verhandelt wird, welchen Einfluss er auf transnationale Migrationsbewegungen hat, wie er den urbanen Raum verändert und welche Rolle akademische Freiheit dabei spielt. Alleine drei Militärputsche formten die Geschichte des Landes in der zweiten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts. Die anschließend einsetzende neoliberale Agenda der 1980er Jahre hatte nicht nur wirtschaftliche, sondern weitreichende soziale und kulturelle Folgen. Der Band verfolgt einen interdisziplinären und epochenübergreifenden Ansatz, der einerseits Wechselwirkungen zwischen Kultur und Politik untersucht und andererseits gesellschaftliche Strukturen in ihrer historischen Veränderlichkeit beleuchtet.     Kurzfassung: Church and Culture in Seventeenth-Century France brings together the social, religious and intellectual history of the Grand Siecle and focuses on the involvement of the Church in a variety of cultural domains, including literature, art, censorship and ideas. It explores the limits as well as the extent of the Church's influence, especially in its attempt to impose orthodoxy in all areas and on all sections of society. Given that orthodoxy determines the believer's inclusion or exclusion from the Church, thus implying the notion of boundaries in a context of constraint, the study is conceived according to a number of spaces. The notion of space is sometimes interpreted literally, e.g. Port-Royal, the school and the church building, and sometimes metaphorically, e.g. orthodoxy itself, science and theology. The book also deals with religious attitudes to libertinage, atheism and deism, and with aspects of French Protestantism
