    Abstract: How California’s counterculture of the 1960s to 1980s profoundly shaped—and was shaped by—West Coast artistsThe 1960s exert a special fascination in modern art. But most accounts miss the defining impact of the period’s youth culture, largely incubated in California, on artists who came of age in that decade. As their prime exemplar, Bruce Conner, reminisced, “I did everything that everybody did in 1967 in the Haight-Ashbury. . . . I would take peyote and walk out in the streets.” And he vividly channeled those experiences into his art, while making his mark on every facet of the psychedelic movement—from the mountains of Mexico with Timothy Leary to the rock ballrooms of San Francisco to the gilded excesses of the New Hollywood. In The Artist in the Counterculture, Thomas Crow tells the story of California art from the 1960s to the 1980s—some of the strongest being made anywhere at the time—and why it cannot be understood apart from the new possibilities of thinking and feeling unleashed by the rebels of the counterculture.Crow reevaluates Conner and other key figures—from Catholic activist Corita Kent to Black Panther Emory Douglas to ecological witness Bonnie Ora Sherk—as part of a generational cohort galvanized by resistance to war, racial oppression, and environmental degradation.     Abstract: The works of African American authors and artists are too often interpreted through the lens of authenticity. They are scrutinized for "positive" or "negative" representations of Black people and Black culture or are assumed to communicate some truth about Black identity or the "Black experience." However, many contemporary Black artists are creating works that cannot be slotted into such categories. Their art resists interpretation in terms of conventional racial discourse; instead, they embrace opacity, uncertainty, and illegibility.John Brooks examines a range of abstractionist, experimental, and genre-defying works by Black writers and artists that challenge how audiences perceive and imagine race. He argues that literature and visual art that exceed the confines of familiar conceptions of Black identity can upend received ideas about race and difference. Considering photography by Roy DeCarava, installation art by Kara Walker, novels by Percival Everett and Paul Beatty, drama by Suzan-Lori Parks, and poetry by Robin Coste Lewis, Brooks pinpoints a shared aesthetic sensibility. In their works, the devices that typically make race feel familiar are instead used to estrange cultural assumptions about race. Brooks contends that when artists confound expectations about racial representation, the resulting disorientation reveals the incoherence of racial ideologies. By showing how contemporary literature and art ask audiences to question what they think they know about race, The Racial Unfamiliar offers a new way to understand African American cultural production

    Abstract: Critically reimagines Chicanx art, unmasking its queer afterlife Emboldened by the boom in art, fashion, music, and retail culture in 1980s Los Angeles, the iconoclasts of queer Aztlán—as Robb Hernández terms the group of artists who emerged from East LA, Orange County, and other parts of Southern California during this period—developed a new vernacular with which to read the city in bloom. Tracing this important but understudied body of work, Archiving an Epidemic catalogs a queer retelling of the Chicana and Chicano art movement, from its origins in the 1960s, to the AIDS crisis and the destruction it wrought in the 1980s, and onto the remnants and legacies of these artists in the current moment. Hernández offers a vocabulary for this multi-modal avant-garde—one that contests the heteromasculinity and ocular surveillance visited upon it by the larger Chicanx community, as well as the formally straight conditions of traditional archive-building, museum institutions, and the art world writ large. With a focus on works by Mundo Meza (1955–85), Teddy Sandoval (1949–1995), and Joey Terrill (1955– ), and with appearances by Laura Aguilar, David Hockney, Robert Mapplethorpe, and even Eddie Murphy, Archiving an Epidemic composes a complex picture of queer Chicanx avant-gardisms. With over sixty images—many of which are published here for the first time—Hernández’s work excavates this archive to question not what Chicanx art is, but what it could have been

    Abstract: As sites of turbulence and transformation, cities are machines for forgetting. And yet archiving and exhibiting the presence of the past remains a key cultural, political and economic activity in many urban environments. This book takes the example of Berlin over the past four decades to chart how the memory culture of the city has responded to the challenges and transformations thrown up by the changing political, social and economic organization of the built environment. The book focuses on the visual culture of the city (architecture, memorials, photography and film). It argues that the recovery of the experience of time is central to the practices of an emergent memory culture in a contemporary 'overexposed' city, whose spatial and temporal boundaries have long since disintegrated

    Abstract: Georges Adéagbo zählt zu den bekanntesten Gegenwartskünstlern Afrikas.     Abstract: Die japanische Populärkultur hat weltweit eine enorme Verbreitung gefunden und ist fester Bestandteil unseres Alltagslebens geworden. Hello Kitty, Pikachu und Co. haben ein Ausmaß kultureller Einflussnahme erreicht, das mit der Hokusai-Begeisterung zur Zeit des Japonismus um 1900 verglichen werden kann. Damals übernahm Gustav Klimt die ornamentale Gestaltung japanischer Holzschnitte für seine Frauenportraits, heute zeichnen junge Frauen in Deutschland Comics im Manga-Stil. Das Buch widmet sich dieser »Nipponspiration«, der Rezeption und kreativen Transformation japanischer Kultur im deutschsprachigen Raum. In Bereichen wie Malerei, Gartenkunst, Film und Manga zeigt sich die Vielfalt der japanischen Einflüsse auf deutschsprachige Kulturschaffende von der Zeit der Jahrhundertwende bis heute.     Abstract: Main description: Als dezidierter Beitrag zur Kunst- und Kulturgeschichte des Politischen fragt das Buch nach der Inanspruchnahme von Kunst zur Herrschaftsrepräsentation, nach Ritualen und Zeichensystemen der Macht am französischen Königshof in der ersten Hälfte des 16. Jahrhunderts. Kunstförderung und Herrschaftshandeln werden hierbei als strukturhomologe Strategien eines (früh)modernen Politikmodells analysiert. Die Entscheidung für einen spezifisch "modernen" Kunststil – den italienischen Manierismus – wurde für den französischen König François Ier zum Politikum: Er schuf sich in Fontainebleau ein Reich mit künstlerischen Mitteln, über das er jederzeit im Sinne der Deutungshoheit als Herrschaftsakt verfügen konnte.     Abstract: Die Studie analysiert anhand von Text, Typographie und Illustrationen verschiedener Festbeschreibungstypen die Topik der Textsorte, deren Aufgabe es ist, die sinnliche Komplexität des höfischen Festes zu reduzieren und allein zeremoniell relevante Daten zu bewahren. Die Funktion der Festbeschreibung wird im Kontext der frühneuzeitlichen Zeremoniellästhetik bestimmt. Die Untersuchung der Paratexte fokussiert das aporetische rhetorische Selbstverständis der Textsorte zwischen den Stilansprüchen von Casualrhetorik und Historiographie. Schwerpunktmäßig untersucht werden die Entstehung der Festbeschreibung im 16. und ihre topische Revision im späten 18. Jahrhundert.
    Abstract: With reference to the texts, typography, and illustrations of various kinds of ceremonial description, the study analyzes the topicology of this text genre, the task of which is to reduce the sensual complexity of courtly festivities and concentrate entirely on ceremonially relevant features. The function of ceremonial descriptions is determined in the context of the ceremonial aesthetics prevalent in the early modern age. Investigation of the paratexts situates the aporetic rhetorical identity of the genre between the stylistic demands of reader-oriented rhetoric on the one hand and historiography on the other. Emphasis is given to the origins of ceremonious description in the 16th century and the topicological changes it underwent in the late 18th century.

    Abstract: Using a wealth of data collected in Israel, this study depicts a complete system in which art is created and evaluated - the scale of Israeli society allowing for a comprehensive and detailed description of all the agents involved in the production and consumption of modern art. The author analyses the patterns of social relations and behaviour created around two art worlds - the world of abstract avant-garde art and the world of traditional figurative painting. She argues that the two worlds differ radically both in terms of the factors that affect the formation of taste, the process of evaluation and the patterns of success in them and in the ways in which these factors exert their influence
