    Abstract: This book deals with the current economic policy of the People's Republic of China. In addition to a brief overview of the economic history since the founding and the economic models, an overview of both the forms of enterprises and the Chinese labor market is given. The book pays particular attention to the development of China's e-commerce sector. Equally significant are China's environmental issues against the backdrop of the climate crisis. Without innovations, for example in energy production and waste management, the Chinese economy will hardly be able to continue growing. Therefore, one focus of the book is on environmental economic policy. Finally, foreign policy, including the Silk Road Initiative, is examined. The aim of this book is to highlight the above developments. It is aimed at practitioners involved in China business as well as first-year students who want an overview of economic policy institutions and current developments.     Abstract: This book provides advanced theoretical and applied tools for the implementation of modern micro-econometric techniques in evidence-based program evaluation for the social sciences. The author presents a comprehensive toolbox for designing rigorous and effective ex-post program evaluation using the statistical software package Stata. For each method, a statistical presentation is developed, followed by a practical estimation of the treatment effects. By using both real and simulated data, readers will become familiar with evaluation techniques, such as regression-adjustment, matching, difference-in-differences, instrumental-variables, regression-discontinuity-design, and synthetic control method, and are given practical guidelines for selecting and applying suitable methods for specific policy contexts. The second revised and extended edition features two new chapters on some recent development of difference-in-differences. Specifically, chapter 5 introduces advanced difference-in-differences methods when many times are available and treatment can be either time-varying or fixed at a specific time. Chapter 6 introduces the synthetic control method, a treatment effect estimation approach suitable when only one unit is treated. Both chapters present applications using the software Stata. .

    Abstract: Why are small and culturally homogeneous nation-states in the advanced capitalist world so prosperous? Examining how Denmark, Ireland, and Switzerland managed the 2008 financial crisis, The Paradox of Vulnerability shows that this is not an accident. John Campbell and John Hall argue that a prolonged sense of vulnerability within both the state and the nation encourages the development of institutions that enable decision makers to act together quickly in order to survive, especially during a crisis. Blending insights from studies of comparative political economy and nationalism and drawing on both extensive interviews and secondary data, Campbell and Hall support their claim by focusing on the three states historically and, more important, in their different responses to the 2008 crisis. The authors also devote attention to the difficulties faced by Greece and Iceland. The implications of their argument are profound. First, they show that there is a positive side to nationalism: social solidarity can enhance national prosperity. Second, because globalization now requires all states to become more adaptable, there are lessons here for other states, large and small. Lastly, the formula for prosperity presented here is under threat: highly homogeneous societies face challenges in dealing with immigration, with some responding in ways that threaten their success.The Paradox of Vulnerability demonstrates how the size and culture of a nation contribute in significant ways to its ability to handle political and economic pressures and challenges

    Abstract: Since the onset of the global economic crisis, activists, policy makers, and social scientists have been searching for alternative paradigms through which to re-imagine contemporary modes of thinking and writing about economic orders. These attempts have led to their re-engagement with fundamental anthropological categories of economic analysis, such as barter, debt, and the gift. Focusing on favours, and the paradoxes of action, meaning, and significance they engender, this volume advocates for their addition to this list of economic universals. It presents a critical re-interrogation of the conceptual relationships between gratuitous and instrumental behaviour, and raises novel questions about the intersection of economic actions with the ethical and expressive aspects of human life. Scholars of post-socialist politics and society have often used 'favour' as a by-word for corruption and clientelism. The contributors to this volume treat favours, and the doing of favours, as a distinct mode of acting, rather than as a form of 'masked' economic exchange or simply an expression of goodwill. Casting their comparative net from post-socialist Central, Eastern, and South Eastern Europe; to the former Soviet Union, Mongolia, and post-Maoist China, the contributors to this volume show how gratuitous behaviour shapes a plethora of different actions, practices, and judgements across religious and political life, imaginative practices, and local moral economies. They show that favours do not operate 'outside' or 'beyond' the economic sphere. Rather, they constitute a distinct mode of action which has economic consequences, without being fully explicable in terms of transactional cost-benefit analyses.

    Abstract: Das Buch analysiert vor dem Hintergrund der aktuellen ökonomischen Verwerfungen die politischen Anstrengungen in der Eurokrise. In den Mittelpunkt rücken nicht nur Machtfragen und der Verlust staatlicher Souveränität. Darüber hinaus werden die wirtschaftspolitischen Strategien des Nordens und des Südens der Kritik unterzogen und die Konsequenzen des Krisenmanagements für Staaten, Regierungen und Parlamente untersucht. Die aktualisierte und erweiterte Neuauflage beleuchtet die Ursachen der europäischen Strukturkrise, gibt einen chronologischen Überblick über die bisherige Entwicklung und diskutiert den Wandel und die zukünftigen Probleme der Europäischen Union. Anhand der Ereignisse vom Beginn der Eurokrise bis zur Bewilligung des drittens Hilfspakets für Griechenland lassen sich die tektonischen Machtverschiebungen und der institutionelle Umbau in der EU verdeutlichen, die in der Bankenunion, dem Stabilitätsmechanismus und dem OMT-Programm ihren Ausdruck finden.     Abstract: Europe is stumbling from crisis to crisis.     Abstract: This Handbook is the first volume to analyse the International Political Economy, the who-gets-what-when-and-how, of global energy.     Abstract: While recent studies have highlighted the phenomenon and risks of increased inequalities between the top and the bottom of society, little research has so far been carried out on trends relating to the median income range that generally represents the middle class. This volume examines the following questions: what are the main transformations in the world of work over the last 20 years in terms of the labour market, social dialogue and conditions of work, wages and incomes that may have affected the middle class? How has the middle class been altered by the financial and economic crisis? What are the long-term trends for the middle class in Europe? This volume also investigates the potential risks and effects of the reshuffling, or even weakening, of the middle class. On the social side, it explores the ramifications of further retrenchment of the European Social Model, which to a great extent has traditionally been funded by the middle class. On the economic side, the book investigates whether this process - especially from the perspective of consumption and human capital - is endangering the long-term sustainability of the current economic model. While presenting evidence of a definite erosion of the middle class, this book assesses the specific situation in each individual EU member state on the basis of detailed statistics and case studies of professional categories that traditionally represent the middle class. This book issues a timely warning about the latest trends and prospects for the middle class in Europe.     Abstract: Die Logik des Kapitalismus heißt teilen. Nur teilen darin nicht die Menschen, sondern sie werden geteilt. Es ist daher problematisch, Commons in kapitalistischen Kategorien zu erklären. Wer die Welt der Commons betritt, begegnet einer anderen Logik, einer anderen Sprache und anderen Kategorien. Nach »Commons. Für eine neue Politik jenseits von Markt und Staat« (2012) erkunden in diesem Band Autorinnen und Autoren aller Kontinente die anthropologischen Grundlagen der Commons und stellen sie zugleich als konkrete Utopien vor. Sie machen nachvollziehbar, dass alles Commons sein oder werden kann: durch Prozesse geteilter Verantwortung, in Laboratorien für Selbstorganisation und durch Freiheit in Verbundenheit. Commoners realisieren, was schon heute machbar ist und morgen selbstverständlich sein wird. Das zeigen über 40 Beispiele aus aller Welt. Elektro-Autos statt CO2-Schleudern, Biosprit statt Benzin, Aquakultur statt Überfischung. Subventioniert von der Politik, unterstützt von Umweltorganisationen, ausgezeichnet mit Nachhaltigkeitspreisen. Wirtschaftswachstum und überbordender Konsum, so die frohe Botschaft der sogenannten dritten industriellen Revolution, sind gut für die Welt, solange sie innovativ und intelligent gemacht sind. Die technikbegeisterte Mittelschicht hört das gern. Doch auch der Rohstoffhunger des grünen Kapitalismus ist riesig: Selbst für nachhaltiges Palmöl, das in Biodiesel und Fertigprodukten steckt, werden Regenwälder gerodet und Menschen vertrieben, wie Kathrin Hartmann in aufrüttelnden Reportagen aus Indonesien zeigt. Ebenfalls schockierend sind ihre Recherchen in Bangladesch: Garnelen aus Zuchtbecken werden mit Öko-Siegeln exportiert, dabei wurden dafür gegen den Willen der Bevölkerung Reisfelder und Mangrovenwälder zerstört. Um den eigenen Hunger zu bekämpfen, zwingt man den Bauern dort Gentechnik-Saatgut auf. Eine schonungslose Abrechnung mit der Illusion des grünen Wachstums, dem Zynismus von Wirtschaft , Politik und NGO und unserem verschwenderischen Lebensstil. (Verlagstext)

    Abstract: Global hyperconnectivity and increased system integration have led to vast benefits, including worldwide growth in incomes, education, innovation, and technology. But rapid globalization has also created concerns because the repercussions of local events now cascade over national borders and the fallout of financial meltdowns and environmental disasters affects everyone. The Butterfly Defect addresses the widening gap between systemic risks and their effective management. It shows how the new dynamics of turbo-charged globalization has the potential and power to destabilize our societies. Drawing on the latest insights from a wide variety of disciplines, Ian Goldin and Mike Mariathasan provide practical guidance for how governments, businesses, and individuals can better manage risk in our contemporary world. Goldin and Mariathasan assert that the current complexities of globalization will not be sustainable as surprises become more frequent and have widespread impacts. The recent financial crisis exemplifies the new form of systemic risk that will characterize the coming decades, and the authors provide the first framework for understanding how such risk will function in the twenty-first century. Goldin and Mariathasan demonstrate that systemic risk issues are now endemic everywhere--in supply chains, pandemics, infrastructure, ecology and climate change, economics, and politics. Unless we are better able to address these concerns, they will lead to greater protectionism, xenophobia, nationalism, and, inevitably, deglobalization, rising conflict, and slower growth. The Butterfly Defect shows that mitigating uncertainty and systemic risk in an interconnected world is an essential task for our future.

    Abstract: Der Arbeitsgruppe Alternative Wirtschaftspolitik gehören Wirtschaftswissenschaftlerinnen und Wirtschaftswissenschaftler verschiedener Universitäten, Fachhochschulen und Forschungseinrichtungen sowie Mitglieder von Gewerkschaften an. Sie beziehen jährlich kritisch Stellung zu den Wirtschaftsgutachten der "Fünf Wirtschaftsweisen" und bieten alternative Lösungsansätze für grundlegende wirtschaftliche Probleme an. Im neuesten Jahrbuch (zuletzt ID-B 30/11) erläutern sie zunächst zusammenfassend ihre Position zur Eurokrise, um die Aussagen danach mit weiteren Daten und eingehenderen Analysen zu untermauern. Alle Mitglieder der Arbeitsgruppe werden namentlich genannt und bekräftigen so ihre gemeinsam gefundene Stellungsnahme.     Abstract: Die chilenische Wirtschaftselite ist eine wenig untersuchte soziale Gruppe. Dabei gibt es viele Gründe, sich mit ihr zu beschäftigen, hat sie doch mehrmals in der Geschichte ihre Fähigkeit, gemeinsam zu handeln, unter Beweis gestellt. Die Untersuchung rückt deshalb die „subjektive Seite“ ungleicher Entwicklung in Chile in den Mittelpunkt: die Grundbesitzer, Händler, Spekulanten, Industriellen und Banker. Von der Republikgründung bis in die Gegenwart rekonstruiert die Autorin ihre unbeständigen Allianzen und internen Auseinandersetzungen, ihre ideologischen Projekte und politischen Strategien.Die historische Perspektive veranschaulicht die Wechselfälle ihrer Vereinigungen: Die Kämpfe zwischen Liberalen und Konservativen um die Macht im Staat, die unterschiedlichen Strategien der rechten Parteien und Unternehmerverbände und schließlich die Herausbildung eines gemeinsamen marktradikalen Projekts und dessen Durchsetzung im Rahmen des Militärregimes.So selbstbewusst sich die chilenische Wirtschaftselite heute auch präsentiert, verdeutlichen doch 200 Jahre Globalisierungsgeschichte, dass Klassenbildung ein veränderlicher, immer umkämpfter Teil und nicht unumstößliches Ergebnis der Geschichte ist

    Abstract: Neoliberalism - the doctrine that market exchange is an ethic in itself, capable of acting as a guide for all human action - has become dominant in both thought and practice throughout much of the world since 1970 or so. Its spread has depended upon a reconstitution of state powers such that privatization, finance, and market processes are emphasized. State interventions in the economy are minimized, while the obligations of the state to provide for the welfare of its citizens are diminished. David Harvey, author of "The New Imperialism" and "The Condition of Postmodernity", here tells the political-economic story of where neoliberalization came from and how it proliferated on the world stage. While Thatcher and Reagan are often cited as primary authors of this neoliberal turn, Harvey shows how a complex of forces, from Chile to China and from New York City to Mexico City, have also played their part. In addition, he explores the continuities and contrasts between neoliberalism of the Clinton sort and the recent turn towards neoconservative imperialism of George W. Bush. Finally, through critical engagement with this history, Harvey constructs a framework not only for analyzing the political and economic dangers that now surround us, but also for assessing the prospects for the more socially just alternatives being advocated by many oppositional movements.

Focusing on attempts to improve landscapes and livelihoods in Indonesia, Tania Murray Li carefully exposes the practices that enable experts to diagnose problems and devise interventions, and the agency of people whose conduct is targeted for reform. Deftly integrating theory, ethnography, and history, she illuminates the work of colonial officials and missionaries; specialists in agriculture, hygiene, and credit; and political activists with their own schemes for guiding villagers toward better ways of life. She examines donor-funded initiatives that seek to integrate conservation with development through the participation of communities, and a one-billion-dollar program designed by the World Bank to optimize the social capital of villagers, inculcate new habits of competition and choice, and remake society from the bottom up. Demonstrating that the "will to improve" has a long and troubled history, Li identifies enduring continuities from the colonial period to the present. She explores the tools experts have used to set the conditions for reform - tools that combine the reshaping of desires with applications of force. Attending in detail to the highlands of Sulawesi, she shows how a series of interventions entangled with one another and tracks their results, ranging from wealth to famine, from compliance to political mobilization, and from new solidarities to oppositional identities and violent attack
