    Abstract: "In modern times, death is understood to have undergone a transformation not unlike religion. Whereas in the past it was out in the open, it now resides mostly in specialized spaces of sequestration - funeral homes, hospitals, and other medical facilities. A mainstay in so-called traditional societies in the form of ritual practices, death was usually messy but meaningful, with the questions of what happens to the dead or where they go lying at the heart of traditional culture and religion. In modernity, however, we are said to have effectively sanitized it, embalmed it and packaged it - but it seems that death is back. In the current era marked by economic, political and social uncertainty, we see it on television, on the Internet; we see it almost everywhere. (Inter)Facing Death analyzes the nexus of death and digital culture in the contemporary moment in the context of recent developments in social, cultural and political theory. It argues that death today can be thought of as "interfaced," that is mediated and expressed, in various aspects of contemporary life rather than put to the side or overcome as many narratives of modernity have suggested.     Abstract: Throughout the world, human rights have grown in prominence over the years. Despite this feat, numerous global events in the past and in recent times, especially those driven by political interests, show that respect for the ideals of human rights are far from being realised in practice. With approaches largely state-centred in nature, these events fundamentally point to a marked gap between human rights norms and practice. What is unfortunately and clearly afforded a low priority or no priority at all in these state-based and politically vested contestations are missing links between international human rights norms and cultural or traditional belief systems and practices. Specifically, this thesis argues that when it comes to beliefs in witchcraft and its practices, there remains a sizeable gap between theory and practice, and this creates the thorny and contentious issue of the unpleasant conflict between international human rights and specific cultural belief systems, practices, norms and values. With a view to analysing the dichotomy between culture and human rights, this dissertation positions, explores and indeed questions beliefs in and practices of witchcraft in Ghana, and particularly Ghana`s alleged witches` camps, within the framework of international human rights.     Abstract: Despite a rich history of ethnographic research in Middle Eastern societies, the region is frequently portrayed as marginal to anthropology. The contributors to this volume reject this view and show how the Middle East is in fact vital to the discipline and how Middle Eastern anthropologists have developed theoretical and methodological tools that address and challenge the region's political, ethical, and intellectual concerns. The contributors to this volume are students of Paul Dresch, an anthropologist known for his incisive work on Yemeni tribalism and customary law. As they expand upon his ideas and insights, these essays ask questions that have long preoccupied anthropologists, such as how do place, point of view, and style combine to create viable bodies of knowledge; how is scholarship shaped by the historical context in which it is located; and why have duration and form become so problematic in the study of Middle Eastern societies? Special attention is given to understanding local terms, contested knowledge claims, what remains unseen and unsaid in social life, and to cultural patterns and practices that persist over long stretches of time, seeming to predate and outlast events. Ranging from Morocco to India, these essays offer critical but sensitive approaches to cultural difference and the distinctiveness of the anthropological project in the Middle East. (Umschlagtext)

    Abstract: South-South cooperation is becoming ever more important to states, policy-makers and academics. Many Northern states, international agencies and NGOs are promoting South-South partnerships as a means of `sharing the burden` in funding and undertaking development, assistance and protection activities, often in response to increased political and financial pressures on their own aid budgets. However, the mainstreaming of Southern-led initiatives by UN agencies and Northern states is paradoxical in many ways, especially because the development of a South-South cooperation paradigm was originally conceptualised as a necessary way to overcome the exploitative nature of North-South relations in the era of decolonisation.This handbook critically explores diverse ways of defining `the South` and of conceptualising and engaging with `South-South relations.` Through 30 state-of-the-art reviews of key academic and policy debates, the handbook evaluates past, present and future opportunities and challenges of South-South cooperation, and lays out research agendas for the next 5-10 years. The book covers key models of cooperation (including internationalism, Pan-Arabism and Pan-Africanism), diverse modes of South-South connection, exchange and support (including South-South aid, transnational activism, and migration), and responses to displacement, violence and conflict (including Southern-led humanitarianism, peace-building and conflict resolution). In so doing, the handbook reflects on decolonial, postcolonial and anticolonial theories and methodologies, exploring urgent questions regarding the nature and implications of conducting research in and about the global South, and of applying a `Southern lens` to a wide range of encounters, processes and dynamics across the global South and global North alike. This handbook will be of great interest to scholars and post-graduate students in anthropology, area studies, cultural studies, development studies, history, geography, international relations, politics, postcolonial studies and sociology.

Einst auf der Gewürzroute zwischen Java und den Molukken gelegen, wurden die Objekte über den Handel in die Region gebracht und als kostbare Gaben in die lokalen Kulturen integriert. Mit der Zeit ist ihr Wert ins Unermessliche gestiegen. Heute werden sie als sakrale Schätze der Ahnen aufbewahrt, mit deren Hilfe Kontakt zu der übernatürlichen Welt aufgenommen werden kann. Ihre offenkundige fremde Herkunft wird dabei negiert. Stattdessen herrscht der Glaube an einen Ursprung von den eigenen Ahnen vor.Über einen historischen Bogen wird beleuchtet, aus welchen Regionen die unterschiedlichen Objektarten tatsächlich stammen und mit welchen Werten sie nach Ostindonesien gelangten. Auf der Insel Flores wird der Prozess der kulturellen Aneignung untersucht, um dem Bedeutungswandel durch Raum und Zeit nachzugehen, der zu erklären vermag, wie es zu deren Sakralisierung in Verbindung mit der Negierung fremdkultureller Herkunft gekommen ist.

    Abstract: Spatial analysis reaches across all the subdisciplines of anthropology. A cultural anthropologist, for example, can use such analysis to trace the extent of distinctive cultural practices; an archaeologist can use it to understand the organization of ancient irrigation systems; a primatologist to quantify the density of primate nesting sites; a paleoanthropologist to explore vast fossil-bearing landscapes.Arguing that geospatial analysis holds great promise for much anthropological inquiry, the contributors have designed this volume to show how the powerful tools of GIScience can be used to benefit a variety of research programs. The encounter of law and culture is a polycentric relation, but these questions draw our attention to law and legal institutions as one site of encounter warranting further investigation, to map out the place of culture in the domains of law by relying on the insights of law, anthropology, politics, and philosophy. Culture in the Domains of Law seeks to examine and answer these questions resulting in a richer outlook on both law and culture"--What does it mean for courts and other legal institutions to be culturally sensitive?     Abstract: Wanderarbeit ist fester Bestandteil eines Lebensverlaufs vieler junger Männer und Frauen aus Nordghana. Die Begleitung von Lasterträger*innen (weibliche kayayei und männliche truck pusher) auf Märkten und Busstationen im südlichen Ghana und in ihre Heimat verdeutlicht diese Praxis als diffizile soziale Aushandlung um Lebensphasen einer modernen Jugend und des Erwachsenendaseins. Teilhabe an diesen äußert sich als kollektives (kayayei) oder zunächst verborgenenes (truck pusher) Bestreben, deren Bedeutung sich erst mit der Rückkehr in den Norden erschließt. Die Begleitung der Wanderarbeiter*innen zeichnet diesen Prozess nach und zeigt so die Bedeutung geschlechtsspezifischer und multilokaler Perspektiven auf Jugend, Wanderarbeit und soziale Mobilität jenseits polulärer Exklusionszuschreibungen von Jugend in Afrika auf.

    Abstract: The Iranian city experienced a major transformation when the Pahlavi Dynasty initiated a project of modernization in the 1920s. The Rite of Urban Passage investigates this process by focusing on the spatial dynamics of Muharram processions, a ritual that commemorates the tragic massacre of Hussein and his companions in 680 CE. In doing so, this volume offers not only an alternative approach to understanding the process of urban transformation, but also a spatial genealogy of Muharram rituals that provides a platform for developing a fresh spatial approach to ritual studies.

Anhand einer empirischen Studie, die Lebenswelten von ghanaischen BildungsremigrantInnen aus Deutschland beleuchtet, thematisiert Claudia Olivier-Mensah den konzeptionellen und analytischen Zusammenhang von Rückkehr und Sozialer Arbeit und zeigt: Remigration muss in der Perspektive der Sozialen Arbeit als Teil eines zirkulären Systems verstanden werden - statt unter einem Reintegrationsfokus in den nationalstaatlichen Herkunftskontext als erstrebtes Endziel gefasst zu werden. Die qualitativen Analysen münden in dem Konzept der »TransREmigration« sowie in einer Typologie, mit welcher verdeutlicht werden kann, welche transnationalen Mobilitäts-, Netzwerk-, Wissens- und Zugehörigkeitsmuster in Rückkehrprozessen eine Rolle spielen.

    Abstract: Full of Life contributes to a growing body of literature discussing care during old age in Africa. The main research thrust addresses care arrangements by focusing on experiences of growing old, meanings of old age and the social interconnectedness of the older generation. Contradicting clichéd preconceptions of the sedentary elderly, this study reveals surprising mobility patterns related to care during old age. Being on the move encompasses three dimensions: physical mobility through actual travel; mediated mobility through virtual connectivity via mobile phones; and immaterial mobility through aspirations - all three criss-crossing and extending beyond the geographic locality of the city - as varied dimensions of care.

    Abstract: "The emergence of modern sciences in the seventeenth century profoundly renewed our understanding of Nature. For the last three centuries new ideas of Nature have been continuously developed by theology, politics, economics, and science, especially the sciences of the material world. The situation is even more unstable today, now that we have entered an ecological mutation of unprecedented scale. Some call it the Anthropocene, but it is best described as a new climatic regime. And a new regime it certainly is, since the many unexpected connections between human activity and the natural world oblige every one of us to reopen the earlier notions of Nature and redistribute what had been packed inside. So the question now arises: what will replace the old ways of looking at Nature? This book explores a potential candidate proposed by James Lovelock when he chose the name "Gaia" for the fragile, complex system through which living phenomena modify the Earth. The fact that he was immediately misunderstood proves simply that his readers have tried to fit this new notion into an older frame, transforming Gaia into a single organism, a kind of giant thermostat, some sort of New Age goddess, or even divine Providence. In this series of lectures on "natural religion", Bruno Latour argues that the complex and ambiguous figure of Gaia offers, on the contrary, an ideal way to disentangle the ethical, political, theological, and scientific aspects of the now obsolete notion of Nature. He lays the groundwork for a future collaboration among scientists, theologians, activists, and artists as they, and we, begin to adjust to the new climatic regime"-

It is important to remind ourselves that so far, and despite decades of research, no study in the life sciences has ever provided evidence of any sort of biological otherness among the populations of Kenya and Ethiopia which produce the best athletes in the world of middle and long distance running. This lack of positive results as failure and should logically - if science were the only dimension at stake - lead to the abandonment of the paradigm based on the biological otherness of East-African, and more broadly of "Black" athletes.

Detailing the many ways ordinary Angolans fashion their relationships with the systeman emic notion of their current political and socioeconomic environmentJon Schubert explores what it means and how it feels to be part of the contemporary Angolan polity.Schubert finds that for many ordinary Angolans, the benefits of the post-conflict "New Angola," flush with oil wealth and in the midst of a construction boom, are few. The majority of the inhabitants of the capital, Luanda, struggle to make ends meet and live on under $2.00 per day. The "New Angola" as promoted by the ruling MPLA, Schubert contends, is an essentially urban, upwardly mobile, and aspirational project, premised on the acceptance of the regime`s political and economic dominance by its citizens. In the first ethnography of Angola to be published since the end of that country`s twenty-seven years of intermittent violent internal conflict in 2002, Schubert traces how Angolans may question and resist the system within an atmosphere of apparent compliance.     Abstract: Since the onset of the global economic crisis, activists, policy makers, and social scientists have been searching for alternative paradigms through which to re-imagine contemporary modes of thinking and writing about economic orders. These attempts have led to their re-engagement with fundamental anthropological categories of economic analysis, such as barter, debt, and the gift. Focusing on favours, and the paradoxes of action, meaning, and significance they engender, this volume advocates for their addition to this list of economic universals. It presents a critical re-interrogation of the conceptual relationships between gratuitous and instrumental behaviour, and raises novel questions about the intersection of economic actions with the ethical and expressive aspects of human life. Scholars of post-socialist politics and society have often used 'favour' as a by-word for corruption and clientelism. The contributors to this volume treat favours, and the doing of favours, as a distinct mode of acting, rather than as a form of 'masked' economic exchange or simply an expression of goodwill. Casting their comparative net from post-socialist Central, Eastern, and South Eastern Europe; to the former Soviet Union, Mongolia, and post-Maoist China, the contributors to this volume show how gratuitous behaviour shapes a plethora of different actions, practices, and judgements across religious and political life, imaginative practices, and local moral economies. They show that favours do not operate 'outside' or 'beyond' the economic sphere. Rather, they constitute a distinct mode of action which has economic consequences, without being fully explicable in terms of transactional cost-benefit analyses.

    Abstract: Development interventions often generate contradictions around questions of who benefits from development and which communities are targeted for intervention. This book examines how the Baka, who live in Eastern Cameroon, assert forms of belonging in order to participate in development interventions, and how community life is shaped and reshaped through these interventions. Often referred to as `forest people`, the Baka have witnessed many recent development interventions that include competing and contradictory policies such as `civilize`, assimilate and integrate the Baka into `full citizenship`, conserve the forest and wildlife resources, and preserve indigenous cultures at the verge of extinction.

    Abstract: John V. Murra's Lewis Henry Morgan Lectures, originally given in 1969, are the only major study of the Andean "avenue towards civilization." Murra sheds light not only on the way civilization was achieved here which followed a fundamentally different process than that of Mesopotamia and Mesoamerica he uses that study to shed new light on the general problems of achieving civilization in any world region. Murra intermixes a study of Andean ecology with an exploration of the ideal of economic self-sufficiency, stressing two foundational socioeconomic forces: reciprocity and redistribution. He shows how both enabled Andean communities to realize direct control of a maximum number of vertically ordered ecological floors and the resources they offered. He famously called this arrangement a "vertical archipelago," a revolutionary model that is still examined and debated almost fifty years after it was first presented in these lecture.     Abstract: Caste hierarchy has frequently been singled out as the overriding principle of Indian society. This book examines its significance among the highly-educated middle class in the Tamil town of Madurai. As part of their distinctive status as 'educated persons', young graduates form egalitarian constellations by ostensibly subverting the boundaries inscribed by caste hierarchy. Stephanie Stocker explores how these friendships are maintained in wider social contexts, finding that the actors engage in supportive networks throughout career and marriage events. Instead of assuming these relationships to be of an entirely different, 'alternative category', however, Stocker's study proposes a dynamic character of friendship which in fact remains in conjunction with Indian values of hierarchy.

    Abstract: 1951 beauftragten indische Regierungsvertreter Le Corbusier zur Mitarbeit an einem ambitionierten Vorhaben, dem Bau von Chandigarh, Indiens größtem postkolonialen Städtebauprojekt. Skulpturale Architekturen und ein vom rechten Winkel geprägter Masterplan zeichnen seither Chandigarhs urbanes Gefüge aus. Heute, 50 Jahre nach dem Tod Le Corbusiers, leben über eine Million Menschen in der sogenannten »City Beautiful«. Bärbel Högner untersucht den von wechselseitiger Beeinflussung geprägten Entwurfsprozess der Planstadt und beleuchtet erstmals die soziale Seite des künstlich geschaffenen Stadtraums. Dabei wird deutlich, dass Le Corbusiers Regelwerk lokalen Gepflogenheiten gerecht wird: Seine Vision der »funktionellen Stadt« erfährt eine eigene Interpretation.

    Abstract: Juliane Kanitz geht in ihrem Buch nicht nur der bereits vielfach gestellten Frage nach, warum muslimische Frauen ein Kopftuch tragen, sondern konzentriert sich darauf, wie es getragen wird. Dabei geht es ihr um die kulturell-ästhetischen und modischen Präferenzen der Frauen und nicht in erster Linie um die religiösen Motive, die sonst häufig im Mittelpunkt der Betrachtung stehen. Neben einem Beitrag zur Forschung über das muslimische Kopftuch legt die Autorin theoretische und empirische Ergänzungen zu islamischer Mode und zum Islam in Deutschland insgesamt vor. Hierbei geht sie auch auf die Europäisierungsdebatte ein, in der Argumente gegen Muslime in Stellung gebracht werden, und entwickelt, ermöglicht durch den neuen Blickwinkel der Mode, einige bisher unberücksichtigt gebliebene Perspektiven auf das Thema Kopftuch in Deutschland.
