    Abstract: This landmark book provides a comprehensive anthropological introduction to contemporary Central Asia. Established and emerging scholars of the region critically interrogate the idea of a 'Central Asian World' at the intersection of post-Soviet, Persianate, East and South Asian worlds. Encompassing chapters on life between Afghanistan and Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan and Xinjiang, this volume situates the social, political, economic, ecological and ritual diversity of Central Asia in historical context. The book ethnographically explores key areas such as the growth of Islamic finance, the remaking of urban and sacred spaces, as well as decolonizing and queering approaches to Central Asia. The volume's discussion of More-than-Human Worlds, Everyday Economies, Material Culture, Migration and Statehood engages core analytical concerns such as globalization, inequality and postcolonialism. Far more than a survey of a 'world region', the volume illuminates how people in Central Asia make a life at the intersection of diverse cross-cutting currents and flows of knowledge. In so doing, it stakes out the contribution of an anthropology of and from Central Asia to broader debates within contemporary anthropology.

    Abstract: Documenting Impossible Realities explores the limitations of conventional accounts through which belonging is documented, focusing on the experiences of adoptees, deportees, migrants, and other exilic populations. Susan Bibler Coutin and Barbara Yngvesson speak to the current historical moment, in which the dichotomy between an "above ground" inhabited by dominant groups and an "underground" to which unauthorized immigrants, political exiles, and transnational adoptees are relegated cannot be sustained. This dichotomy was made possible by the illusion that some people don't belong, that some forms of kin are not real, or that certain ways of knowing do not count. To examine accounts that challenge such illusions, Coutin and Yngvesson focus on the spaces between groups, where difference is constituted and where the potential for new forms of relationship may be realized. By juxtaposing and moving between entangled realities and modes of expression, Documenting Impossible Realities conveys the emotional experience of oscillating between being here and gone, legitimate and treated as counterfeit

    Abstract: "Argonauts of West Africa examines the paradoxes of kinship in the lives of unauthorized African migrants as they struggle for mobility, employment, and citizenship in Europe. In a rapidly changing and highly precarious context, migrants turn to kinship in search of security, stability, and predictability. Through the exchange of identity documents, assistance in obtaining such documentation, marriage, or cohabitation, new kinship dynamics are continually made and remade to navigate the shifting demands of European states. These new kinship relations, however, often prove unreliable, taking on new, unexpected dynamics in the face of codependency; they become more difficult to control than those who entered into such relations could have imagined. Through unusually close ethnographic work in West African migrant communities in Amsterdam, Apostolos Andrikopoulos reveals unseen dynamics of "siblinghood" through shared papers, the tensions of race and gender that develop in mutually beneficial marriages, and the vast, informal networks of people, information, and documentation on which migrants rely. Throughout, Andrikopoulos demonstrates how inequality, exclusionary practices, and the changing policies of an often-violent state demand new forms of kinship to successfully navigate complex migration routes"--

    Abstract: Theories and opinions about climate change abound - from those claiming that human-induced climate change is already beyond control to those who express scepticism about the real extent of these changes. How should we weigh up the scientific evidence, and what role does climate change play in the history of the Earth? In this comprehensive history of the climate and climate change, Antonello Provenzale explains how the planetary climate system works and how the climate has evolved over millions of years. Starting from the catastrophic events that marked the early history of the Earth, including seas of magma, global glaciations and mass extinctions, he shows that the climate has fluctuated between hot and cold periods: at certain times, the Earth was hot and lush with forests, while at others it was almost entirely covered by a thick layer of ice. The mechanisms that determine the modifications of the climate are multiple and complex and include external factors, such as solar luminosity and variations in the Earth's orbit, as well as internal processes connecting the atmosphere, the oceans, the crust, the mantle and the biosphere, which comprises living organisms. While the climate has fluctuated a great deal in the long history of the Earth, there are two features of our current situation that are a source of real concern. First, the rise in temperature of the last 50 years has been extremely fast, making it difficult for the environment to adapt to the new conditions. Second, the human population is much greater than it was in the past, and this population needs water, food, energy and shelter to survive. If temperatures continue to rise as they have in recent decades, ours will not be an easy world in which to live. To appreciate what is at stake we need to understand how the climate works and how human activity is affecting it - not in order to save the planet, which will do just fine on its own and probably better without us, but to save ourselves.

The volume collects historical reflections concerned with the use of visual material, visualization, and vision in science from a historical perspective, ranging across multiple cultures from antiquity until present day. Für die Analyse spätmoderner, postmigrantischer Gesellschaften, die von Mobilität und lebensstilistischer Diversität geprägt sind, ist diese einseitige Herkunftsfixierung unzureichend. Es gilt daher, Menschen mit Migrationshintergrund in konsequent gesamtgesellschaftlich angelegten Analysen zu berücksichtigen. An die Stelle der Assimilationstheorie soll eine postmigrantisch revidierte Milieuanalyse treten, deren Entwurf in diesem Werk programmatisch skizziert wird.

    Abstract: Who owns the past? Are museum archives and their re-collections of cultural heritage a cult of the dead — and if so, are we living in a necropolis? This book on photography, cemeteries, and the archive evolved out of an experimental research project at the Bibliotheca Hertziana in Rome, with its immense collection of canonic photographs from the history of art and architecture. An artist’s book, it takes on the form of a description of an unfinished film in five acts — a cinematic fragment, so to speak: DOPOSTORIA. The title essay by Christoph Keller is complemented by two contributions on burial cultures in prehistory and in modernity from the archaeologist Maria Clara Martinelli and the modern historian Carolin Kosuch. A sequence of collages at the back of the book conjures up a phantasmagorical journey through an ancient-modern Rome.

    Abstract: Klappentext: "Since the mid-nineteenth century, agricultural development and fisheries management in northern Japan have been profoundly shaped by how people within and beyond Japan have compared Hokkaido's landscapes to those of other places, as part of efforts to make the new Japanese nation-state more legibly "modern." In doing so, they engaged in heterodox modes of analogic thinking that reached out to diverse places, including the American West and southern Chile. Today, the comparisons made by Hokkaido fishing industry professionals, scientists, and Ainu indigenous groups between the island's forests, fields, and waters and those of others around the world continue to dramatically affect the region's approaches to environmental management and its physical landscapes. In this far-ranging ethnography, Heather Swanson shows how this traffic shapes the course of Hokkaido's development, its fish, and the lives of people on and beyond the island. Resulting encounters restructure not only trade dynamics and political economy but also multispecies relations in watersheds around the globe"--

    Abstract: "On September 2, 1945, Ho Chi Minh read the Declaration of Independence via a makeshift wired loudspeaker system to thousands of listeners in Hanoi. Five days later, Ho's Viet Minh forces set up a clandestine radio station using equipment brought to Southeast Asia by colonial traders. The revolutionaries garnered support for their coalition on air by interspersing political narratives with red music (nhạc đỏ). Voice of Vietnam Radio (VOV) grew from these communist and colonial foundations to become contemporary Vietnam's largest producer of music. In the first comprehensive English-language study on the history of radio music in mainland Southeast Asia, Lonán Ó Briain examines the broadcast voices that reconfigured Vietnam's cultural, social, and political landscape over a century. Ó Briain draws on a year of ethnographic fieldwork at the VOV studios (2016-17), interviews with radio employees and listeners, historical recordings and broadcasts, and archival research in Vietnam, France, and the United States. From the Indochinese radio clubs of the 1920s to the 75th anniversary celebrations of the VOV in 2020, Voices of Vietnam offers a fresh perspective on this turbulent period by demonstrating how music production and sound reproduction are integral to the unyielding process of state formation"--

    Abstract: Der inklusive Freiwilligendienst weltwärts ist eine privilegierte Form der räumlichen Bewegung, die als solche selten Gegenstand der erziehungswissenschaftlichen Migrationsforschung ist. Manuel Peters erkundet aus migrationspädagogischer und rassismuskritischer Perspektive die komplexen Aneignungsweisen rassifizierter Ordnungen innerhalb dieser Mobilität. Mithilfe postkolonialer, macht- und rassismusanalytischer sowie bildungstheoretischer Ansätze zeigt er, wie Aneignungsweisen als spezifische, interaktiv hervorgebrachte und (global-)gesellschaftlich verortete Subjektivierungspraktiken bzw. Bildungsprozesse rekonstruiert werden können. Die weltwärts-Mobilität kann somit als bedeutsamer - postkolonialer - Zugehörigkeitskontext gedeutet werden, in dem sich vorherrschende Differenzordnungen der Migrationsgesellschaft aktualisieren.

    Abstract: In diesem Buch wird der politische Entstehungsprozess des Anerkennungsgesetzes im Rahmen einer detaillierten Policy-Analyse untersucht. Der vermeintliche Widerspruch einer policy, die zu einer sukzessiven Rechtsausweitung für auslandsqualifizierte Migrant*innen führt und dennoch restriktive Elemente beinhaltet oder zur Folge hat, wirft die für diese Studie zentrale Frage auf, inwieweit und warum sich liberale und restriktive Elemente in der Genese des Anerkennungsgesetzes durchsetzen können. Zentrale Einflussfaktoren bilden neben einzelnen Akteur*innen auch strukturelle Rahmenbedingungen des politischen Prozesses sowie die diskursive Einordnung der policy in die gesamtgesellschaftliche Debatte zum Fachkräftemangel. Das komplexe Zusammenspiel der einzelnen Faktoren offenbart ein in Reformprozessen von Migrationspolitik präsentes Spannungsverhältnis zwischen einer stärkeren Öffnung und einer gleichbleibenden Restriktion. Die Autorin Amélie Haag promovierte im Fachbereich Politikwissenschaft an der Universität Hildesheim. Sie studierte Soziologie an der Universität Aix-Marseille in Aix-en-Provence und Europapolitik am Institut d’Études Politiques in Straßburg.

    Abstract: Im gesellschaftlichen Kontext Württembergs zeichnet das vorliegende Buch exemplarisch für den deutschsprachigen Raum die Entstehung und organisatorische Entfaltung des Tierschutzes im langen 19. Jahrhundert nach. Ausgangspunkt ist die erste kontinentaleuropäische Tierschutzbewegung, die in Württemberg von 1837 bis 1840 in einem breiten öffentlichen Diskurs und organisiert in sechs Vereinen einen Tierschutzparagrafen durchsetzte, bevor sie wieder versandete. Warum gerade zu dieser Zeit ausgerechnet im wirtschaftlich zurückgebliebenen Württemberg der Übergang von tierethischer Reflexion zu zivilgesellschaftlichem Handeln gegen Tierquälerei stattfand, leitet die Studie aus Veränderungen der gesellschaftlichen Verhältnisse und aus einer geistigen Atmosphäre ab, die gekennzeichnet war von romantischer Empfindsamkeit, Individualismus und Sittenstrenge, verschränkt mit aufgeklärter, sehr praktisch orientierter pietistischer Frömmigkeit. 1862 gelang die Gründung eines dauerhafteren und landesweiten Vereins, dem in den 1890er Jahren noch zwei kleinere folgten: ein Frauenverein und ein Ableger der Antivisektionsbewegung. Das Buch stellt Praxis, Forderungen, tierrechtliche Ansätze, Zielgruppen und soziale Basis aller Vereine ausführlich vor und analysiert Motive und Netzwerke der Protagonist*innen. Dabei werden die Tiere, um die es ging, nicht vergessen: Basierend auf den Quellen der Vereine entfaltet die Studie ein plastisches Panorama der damaligen Lage der Tiere in der menschlichen Gesellschaft, die jeden romantisierenden Rückbezug auf diese Zeit vor der Massentierhaltung Lügen straft. Der Autor Dr. Wolfram Schlenker ist Politikwissenschaftler und Germanist.

Rules fix the beginning and end of the working day and the school year, direct the ebb and flow of traffic on the roads, dictate who can be married to whom and how, place the fork to the right or the left of the plate, lay down the meter and rhyme scheme of a Petrarchan sonnet, and order the rites of birth and death. Cultures notoriously differ as to the content of their rules, but there is no culture without rules. In this book, historian of science Lorraine Daston adopts a long term perspective for studying rules from diverse sources, including monastic orders, cookbooks, and mathematical algorithms. She argues that in the Western tradition most rules can be characterized as one of the following: tools of measurement and calculation, models or paradigms, or laws. Moreover, they exist on spectra from specific to general, flexible to rigid and the specific-to-general, and universal-to-particular. In analytischen Vignetten, die verschiedene Regionen sowie die nationale und internationale Dimension des Bürgerkrieges untersuchen, gibt Jan Pospisil einen Einblick in die südsudanesische Konfliktrealität.

    Abstract: "If many people were shocked by Trump's 2016 election, many more were stunned when, months later, white power extremists took to the streets of Charlottesville chanting "Blood and Soil" and "Jews will not replace us!" Like Trump, the Charlottesville marchers were dismissed as aberrations -- the momentary appearance of "racists" and "haters" who didn't represent the real U.S. Rather than being exceptional, It Can Happen Here argues these events are symptoms of the country's long history of systemic white supremacy, genocide, and atrocity crimes. And there is a high likelihood that such violence will occur here again. This reality, "It Can Happen Here" demonstrates, is a key post-mortem lesson we have learned from the 2016-2020 Trump presidency. "It Can Happen Here" breaks new ground by raising the alarm about the on-going threat of genocide and mass violence in the U.S. as well as considering path forward for repair. Written from a public anthropology perspective, it is also the field's first book to explore contemporary white power extremism in the U.S"--

    Abstract: "Islam and Heritage in Europe provides a critical investigation of the role of Islam in Europe's heritage. Focusing on Islam, heritage, and Europe; it seeks to productively trouble all of these terms and to throw new light on the relationships between them in various urban, national and transnational contexts. Bringing together international scholars from a range of disciplines, this volume examines heritage-making and Islam in the context of current happenings in Europe, as well as analysing past developments and future possibilities. Presenting work based on ethnographic, historical and archival research, chapters are concerned with questions of diversity, mobility, decolonisation, translocality, restitution, and belonging. By looking at diverse trajectories of people and things, this volume encompasses multiple perspectives on the relationship between Islam and heritage in Europe, including the ways in which it has played out and transformed against the backdrop of the 'refugee crisis' and other recent developments, such as debates on decolonising museums or the resurgence of nationalist sentiments. Islam and Heritage in Europe discusses specific articulations of belonging and non-belonging, and the ways in which they create new avenues for re-thinking Islam and heritage in Europe. This ensures that the book will be of interest to academics, researchers and postgraduate students engaged in the study of heritage, museums, Islam, Europe, anthropology, archaeology, and art history"--
