Against the backdrop of twelve years of newspaper coverage of rape, including many high-profile cases, this study also traces the rise of “celebrity culture”, the emergence of #metoo, and the development of the backlash against it. The author places these historical events and recent trends within broader debates on feminism and the role played by (social) media in shaping contemporary rape discourse. This book provides a much-needed linguistic analysis which will be of particular interest to scholars and students of feminist studies, language and gender, corpus-assisted discourse studies, and gendered crime.     Abstract: Die Max-Planck-Gesellschaft (MPG), eine der erfolgreichsten Forschungsinstitutionen weltweit, steht exemplarisch für das stark von Hierarchien und Abhängigkeitsverhältnissen geprägte deutsche Wissenschaftssystem. Die Studie analysiert ihren soziokulturellen und strukturellen Wandlungsprozess unter Genderaspekten in den ersten fünfzig Jahren ihres Bestehens – von intransparenten Wirkungszusammenhängen informeller Netzwerke hin zu einer modernen, an Gleichstellungspolitik orientierten Forschungsinstitution. Dabei werden zwei weibliche Arbeitswelten in der Forschungsgesellschaft kultur- und wissenschaftshistorisch untersucht: die Wissenschaft, zu der lange Zeit nur sehr wenige Frauen Zugang hatten, und das "Vorzimmer", in dem die meisten Frauen gearbeitet haben. Was hat weibliche Wissenschaftskarrieren in der MPG befördert, was behindert und welche Rolle spielte dabei das "Harnack-Prinzip", das MPG-eigene Strukturprinzip der persönlichkeitszentrierten Forschungsorganisation? Ein weiterer Fokus liegt auf den gleichstellungspolitischen Aushandlungsprozessen, die Ende der 1980er begannen und dazu beigetragen haben, die tradierte Geschlechterordnung der Max-Planck-Gesellschaft aufzubrechen und dort einen Kulturwandel herbeizuführen.

    Abstract: This monograph is a study of the work of British author A. S. Byatt, exploring the cultural representation of the woman intellectual in her fiction. It argues that Byatt’s representations of this figure show narratives of intellectual women to be inherently mythopoeic, or capable of restructuring the myth of the intellectual as male by default. This mythopoeia is, furthermore, intrinsically feminist in function, thus potentially broadening the conventional, limited view of women in intellectual history. The book will be the first study of Byatt’s work to examine this figure in detail, and the first study of women intellectuals in historical and literary discourse to apply concepts of mythopoeia and sexual difference in ways that allow new readings of women’s status and work in public spheres.     Abstract: Offering a new reading of Malory’s famed text, Le Morte Darthur, this book provides the first full-length survey of the alterations Malory made to female characters in his source texts. Through detailed comparisons with both Old French and Middle English material, Siobhán M. Wyatt discusses how Malory radically altered his French and English source texts to create a gendered pattern in the reliability of speech, depicting female discourse as valuable and truthful. Malory’s authorial crafting indicates his preference for a certain “type” of female character: self-governing, opinionated, and strong. Simultaneously, the portrayal of this very readable “type” yields characterization. While late medieval court records indicate an increasingly negative attitude towards female speech and a tendency to punish vociferous women as “scolds,” Malory makes the words of chiding damsels constructive. While his contemporary writers suppress the powers of magical women, Malory empowers his enchantress characters; while the authors of his French source texts accentuate Guinevere’s flaws, Malory portrays her with sympathy

    Abstract: With Faithful Translators Jaime Goodrich offers the first in-depth examination of women’s devotional translations and of religious translations in general within early modern England. Placing female translators such as Queen Elizabeth I and Mary Sidney Herbert, Countess of Pembroke, alongside their male counterparts, such as Sir Thomas More and Sir Philip Sidney, Goodrich argues that both male and female translators constructed authorial poses that allowed their works to serve four distinct cultural functions: creating privacy, spreading propaganda, providing counsel, and representing religious groups. Ultimately, Faithful Translators calls for a reconsideration of the apparent simplicity of "faithful" translations and aims to reconfigure perceptions of early modern authorship, translation, and women writers.

    Abstract: The book addresses one of the most heinous crimes of Saddam Hussein's Baath regime in Iraq, the so-called Anfal Campaign against the Kurdish population in 1988: within a few months, thousands of villages were destroyed; up to 182,000 men and women abducted and murdered; tens of thousands of civilians detained and forcibly reset tled.
    Abstract: Based on longstanding work with women Anfal survivors in the Germyan region of Kurdis tan-Iraq, the author explores their psychosocial situation and coping strategies over more than twenty years. She documents the women's path from victims to survivors, their struggle for truth, justice, and acknowledgement, and their conflicts with both the Kurdish national victimhood discourse and Iraqi national strategies in dealing with the past.
    Abstract: The research gives an exceptional long-term psychological perspective on coping with extreme violence, beyond common discourses of trauma and "healing". It links psycho logical trauma research to memory studies and the debate on socio-political reconstruction in post-conflict societies.
