Abstract: This volume addresses the 'question of power' in current constructivist securitisation studies. How can power relations that affect security and insecurity be analysed from both a transdisciplinary and historical point of view? The volume brings together contributions from history, art history, political science, sociology, cultural anthropology and law in order to determine the role of conceptions of power in securitisation studies, which has tended to be dealt with implicitly thus far. Using conceptual theoretical essays and historical case studies that cover the period from the 16th to the 21st century, this book portrays the dominant paradigms of critical security studies, which mostly stem from the field of international relations and see the state as a major focal point in securitisation, in a new light

Abstract: With a few exceptions, critical theorists have been late to provide a comprehensive diagnosis of neoliberalism comparable in scope to their extensive analyses of advanced welfare state capitalism. Instead, the main lines of critical theory have focused on questions of international justice which, while no doubt significant, restrict the scope of critical theory by deemphasizing linkages to larger political and economic conditions. Providing a critique of the Frankfurt School, Brian Caterino and Phillip Hansen move beyond its foundations, and call for a rethinking of the bases of critical theory as a practical, freedom-creating project. Outlining a resurgence of neoliberalism, the authors encourage a fresh, nuanced analysis that elucidates its political and economic structures and demonstrates the threats to freedom and democracy that neoliberalism poses. They propose the reformulation of a radical democratic alternative to neoliberalism, one that critically addresses its limitations while promoting an enhancement of communicative and social freedom

Abstract: Embrace the Gritty Reality of Training Ever watched half your class stomp out on you? Fallen asleep facilitating a creativity workshop? Planned a bulletproof lesson plan, then dropped it 10 minutes after you started? Don't worry-it's fine to confess. If you have faced a surprise in the training room, chances are Jonathan Halls has seen it, too. As a result, he doesn't pretend to be a shiny happy trainer anymore; his 25-plus years of training and facilitating in 25 countries have taught him not to stress over a less-than-flawless class-and helped him focus less on himself and more on letting his learners shine. In Confessions of a Corporate Trainer: An Insider Tells All , Jonathan tells relatable and charming stories of what corporate training is really about, drawing from his highly rated train-the-trainer workshops and hundreds of honest conversations with like-minded trainers. He recounts the curveball he was thrown midway through a change management workshop in Zagreb, Croatia-and how it showed him the futility of overplanning. He shares the time a fire alarm disrupted a training program he led in Washington, D.C., and how he embraced the interruption. And he reflects on what conspires to knock trainers off their game (psst: demanding clients, heavy workloads, and frequent travel are only a few of the culprits). Discover the gritty reality of training. Confessions of a Corporate Trainer will entertain you, challenge you, and remind you why you as a trainer are so important in today's workplace.

Abstract: Your one-stop shop for world-class results The most admired organizations in the world have the same basic resources that you have-offices, computers, pencils, pens, phones, Internet, people. The primary difference is the way they use those resources. How do successful organizations consistently succeed? We witness their extraordinary results, but the secrets often remain hidden. In Lead With Your Customer , authors Mark David Jones and J. Jeff Kober offer the key success tools all world-class organizations have in common and explain how your organization can adopt them. To understand their customer-first approach, they offer the World Class Excellence Model-the result of decades of success as leaders at the Walt Disney Company and years of experience and research working with over two dozen Fortune 500 companies. The authors explain how "world class" status can be attained by many organizations, and isn't the domain of only the most expensive, luxurious, or popular brands. Jones and Kober guide you by detailing benchmark practices and illustrating how they are followed by all best-in-class organizations by viewing each person inside and around the organization as your "customer"-internally, as you engage your employees and build your organization's culture, and externally, as you engage your customers and build your brand. For this second edition, the authors present updated examples from organizations including IKEA, Harley-Davidson, Southwest Airlines, Ritz-Carlton, MD Anderson Cancer Center, and, of course, Walt Disney.

Abstract: Learning the basics of photography can seem like a daunting task. At first glance, there is a whole new world of terminology to digest and tons of numbers to master. It can be confusing, frustrating, and overwhelming. It's no wonder many people set their cameras to Auto and hope for the best in whatever situation they're shooting, whether that's a child's soccer game, a birthday party, or a vacation. Unless luck strikes, the resulting images are usually not very good. But it doesn't have to be this way. Enter Make Great Photos: A Friendly Guide for Improving Your Photographs . In this book, photographer and author Alan Hess teaches you the basics of photography by breaking down the topic into its fundamental parts. In the first section of the book, Alan explains what makes a great photo in the first place, examining a selection of images and working through why each one is successful. He then dives into chapters that cover the photographic choices every photographer needs to make. These choices boil down to just three main topics: light, focus, and composition. In the second part of Make Great Photos , Alan addresses specific shooting situations-categorized into travel, sports and action, events, and people-discussing the challenges that each scenario poses and how to conquer them. Finally, you'll learn the top five basic edits you need to know to make your images pop when you share them online. At the end of chapters, there are thoughtful exercises and assignments that push you to learn and grow in your photography. These fun activities help you fully absorb the lessons throughout the book so you can head out with your camera and capture great images.

Abstract: Languages may come and go, but the relational database endures. Learn how to use Ecto, the premier database library for Elixir, to connect your Elixir and Phoenix apps to databases. Get a firm handle on Ecto fundamentals with a module-by-module tour of the critical parts of Ecto. Then move on to more advanced topics and advice on best practices with a series of recipes that provide clear, step-by-step instructions on scenarios commonly encountered by app developers. Co-authored by the creator of Ecto, this title provides all the essentials you need to use Ecto effectively. Elixir and Phoenix are taking the application development world by storm, and Ecto, the database library that ships with Phoenix, is going right along with them. There are plenty of examples that show you the basics, but to use Ecto to its full potential, you need to learn the library from the ground up. This definitive guide starts with a tour of the core features of Ecto - repos, queries, schemas, changesets, transactions - gradually building your knowledge with tasks of ever-increasing complexity. Along the way, you'll be learning by doing - a sample application handles all the boilerplate so you can focus on getting Ecto into your fingers. Build on that core knowledge with a series of recipes featuring more advanced topics. Change your pooling strategy to maximize your database's efficiency. Use nested associations to handle complex table relationships. Add streams to handle large result sets with ease. Based on questions from Ecto users, these recipes cover the most common situations developers run into. Whether you're new to Ecto, or already have an app in production, this title will give you a deeper understanding of how Ecto works, and help make your database code cleaner and more efficient. What You Need: To follow along with the book, you should have Erlang/OTP 19+ and Elixir 1.4+ installed. The book will guide you through setting up a sample application that integrates Ecto.

Abstract: Docker does for DevOps what Rails did for web development--it gives you a new set of superpowers. Gone are "works on my machine" woes and lengthy setup tasks, replaced instead by a simple, consistent, Docker-based development environment that will have your team up and running in seconds. Gain hands-on, real-world experience with a tool that's rapidly becoming fundamental to software development. Go from zero all the way to production as Docker transforms the massive leap of deploying your app in the cloud into a baby step. Docker makes life as a Ruby and Rails developer easier. It helps build, ship, and run your applications, solving major problems you face every day. It allows you to run applications at scale, adding new resources as needed. Docker provides a reliable, consistent environment that's guaranteed to work the same everywhere. Docker lets you do all things DevOps without needing a PhD in infrastructure and operations. Want to spin up a cluster to run your app? No problem. Scale it up or down at will? You bet. Start by running a Ruby script without having Ruby installed on the local machine. Then Dockerize a Rails application and run it using containers, including creating your own custom Docker images tailored for running Rails apps. Describe your app declaratively using Docker Compose, specifying the software dependencies along with everything needed to run the application. Then set up continuous integration, as well as your deployment pipeline and infrastructure. Along the way, find out the best practices for using Docker in development and production environments. This book gives you a solid foundation on using Docker and fitting it into your development workflow and deployment process. What You Need: All you need is a Windows, Mac OS X or Linux machine to do development on. This book guides you through the process of installing Docker. Some basic familiarity with Linux/Unix is recommended even if you're using a Windows machine.

Abstract: Crystal is for Ruby programmers who want more performance, or for developers who enjoy working in a high-level scripting environment. Crystal combines native execution speed and concurrency with Ruby-like syntax, so you will feel right at home. This book, the first available on Crystal, shows you how to write applications that have the beauty and elegance of a modern language, combined with the power of types and modern concurrency tooling. Now you can write beautiful code that runs faster, scales better, and is a breeze to deploy. Crystal is elegant to read and easy to program like Ruby, allowing full object-oriented development. Its compiler is powerful enough to nearly always infer the type of your variables. So you get the benefits of a statically typed language: more robust code, safety and execution speed, while still reaching high productivity in development. Null pointer exceptions as in JavaScript, Java or C#, are a thing of the past: Crystal annihilates them, just like Rust. Explore the building blocks and design of the language, and how you can use the Crystal tool-chain to build and manage powerful applications. Harness the power of the macro system, as well as how to work with fibers and channels, making concurrency as easy as possible. Learn how to use the Kemal web framework and access databases, and how to tap the potential of existing Crystal libraries. Find the spot that Crystal fills in today's software world with real-world examples. With Crystal, you can combine the best of both worlds: the high-level coding of dynamic languages, and the safety and blazing performance of a natively compiled language. What You Need: To develop in Crystal, you only need Crystal v 0.26 the latest version, a common text editor and a browser.

Keywords: Computer software ; Testing ; ERLANG (Computer program language) ; Elixir (Computer program language) ; Electronic books ; Electronic books ; local
Abstract: Property-based testing helps you create better, more solid tests with little code. By using the PropEr framework in both Erlang and Elixir, this book teaches you how to automatically generate test cases, test stateful programs, and change how you design your software for more principled and reliable approaches. You will be able to better explore the problem space, validate the assumptions you make when coming up with program behavior, and expose unexpected weaknesses in your design. PropEr will even show you how to reproduce the bugs it found. With this book, you will be writing efficient property-based tests in no time. Most tests only demonstrate that the code behaves how the developer expected it to behave, and therefore carry the same blind spots as their authors when special conditions or edge cases show up. Learn how to see things differently with property tests written in PropEr. Start with the basics of property tests, such as writing stateless properties, and using the default generators to generate test cases automatically. More importantly, learn how to think in properties. Improve your properties, write custom data generators, and discover what your code can or cannot do. Learn when to use property tests and when to stick with example tests with real-world sample projects. Explore various testing approaches to find the one that's best for your code. Shrink failing test cases to their simpler expression to highlight exactly what breaks in your code, and generate highly relevant data through targeted properties. Uncover the trickiest bugs you can think of with nearly no code at all with two special types of properties based on state transitions and finite state machines. Write Erlang and Elixir properties that generate the most effective tests you'll see, whether they are unit tests or complex integration and system tests. What You Need Basic knowledge of Erlang, optionally Elixir For Erlang tests: Erlang/OTP 〉= 20.0, with Rebar 〉= 3.4.0 For Elixir tests: Erlang/OTP 〉= 20.0, Elixir 〉= 1.5.0

Abstract: Chaos engineering is a highly collaborative activity. When applied well, virtually everyone is responsible for exploring, surfacing, overcoming, and validating weaknesses in their systems. That can lead to a lot of chaos engineering activity across a collection of systems at any moment in time. How can you keep chaos engineering from becoming, well, too chaotic? One key technique is chaos observability. In this ebook, Russ Miles of ChaosIQ demonstrates how to bring your chaos experiments into the world of system observability. Chaos observability enables you to surface, debug, and even visualize chaos experiment activities across your system in real time and through time series recordings. You'll learn how chaos observability helps everyone in production be aware of chaos activities occurring within and across systems. Understand why it's imperative to make chaos engineering observable Learn how to bring chaos experiments and engineering into the overall system observability picture Make chaos observability actionable and difficult to ignore through alerts and Slack integration

Abstract: Conscious and unconscious bias, societal pressures, and discomfort with women's ambition are issues that women are confronted with in any male-dominated setting, and tech is no exception. Statistically, women are a disproportionately small percentage of the technology industry. How did we get here, what is changing, and what can future generations of women in STEM expect? In Crushing the IT Gender Bias , author Kellyn Pot'Vin-Gorman applies her two decades of experience in tech to these meaningful questions, plus many more. As a mentor and sponsor of women in the database and development communities, Pot'Vin-Gorman uses experience, visualizations of hard data, and industry interviews to describe the many challenges that women face in STEM. She then shows you how to inoculate against them. Small, positive changes like these are similar to a vaccine: they build individual immunity and thus create herd immunity to protect the most vulnerable. This shift is accomplished through increased representation of-and direct exposure to-successful role models in the industry. You'll get practical advice related to hiring practices, salary negotiations, and barriers to collaboration. After witnessing multiple female peers depart the tech world, Pot'Vin-Gorman has written Crushing the IT Gender Bias to make her voice heard and to start this necessary conversation productively so that women can thrive. Additionally, this book is for male professionals who desire to grow in their understanding and eliminate bias in their environments. Do not be content with mere survival. Read this book, practice the techniques, and, most importantly, learn how to pay it forward. By arming yourself with knowledge and facing bias head-on, you can be the meaningful change that you want to see in the tech industry. Who This Book Is For Women in any area of technology with a desire to make and lead positive change by eliminating conscious and unconscious bias along with strategically confronting the many issues facing women in a field dominated by cultural bias. The book appeals to those just starting a career through to seasoned professionals, and even to those entering the management tier. This book also welcomes men with a desire to grow in their understanding and eliminate bias in the world around them.

Abstract: Assemble the complete stack required to build a modern web app using MongoDB, Express, React, and Node. This book also covers many other complementary tools: React Router, GraphQL, React-Bootstrap, Babel, and Webpack. This new edition will use the latest version of React (React 16) and the latest React Router (React Router 4), which has a significantly different approach to routing compared to React Router 2 which was used in the first edition of the book. Though the primary focus of Pro MERN Stack is to equip you with all that is required to build a full-fledged web application, a large portion of the book will be devoted to React 16. The popular MEAN (MongoDB, Express, AngularJS, Node) stack introduced Single Page Apps (SPAs) and front-end Model-View-Controller (MVC) as new and efficient paradigms. Facebook's React is a technology that competes indirectly with AngularJS. It is not a full-fledged MVC framework. It is a JavaScript library for building user interfaces (in some sense the View part). Yet, it is possible to build a web app by replacing AngularJS with React - hence the term MERN stack What You Will Learn Discover the features of React 16 to get the maximum out of this library Gain the basics of MongoDB, Express, and Node to build a web app Work with other libraries complementary to React, including React-Bootstrap, React Router, and GraphQL Use tools such as Babel and Webpack required to build JavaScript-based SPAs Tie all the components together to build a complete web app. Who This Book Is For Developers and architects who have prior experience in any web app stack other than the MERN stack will find the book useful to learn about this modern stack. Abstract: Implement successful and cost-effective enterprise architecture projects. This book provides a new approach to developing enterprise architecture based on the idea of emergent behaviors-where instead of micromanaging system implementation, the enterprise architecture effort establishes clear goals and leaves the details to the implementation teams. System development efforts are measured based on their contribution to achieving business goals instead of implementing specific (possibly outdated) requirements. Most enterprise architecture initiatives employ one of the existing system architecture frameworks such as Zachman or The Open Group Architecture Framework, but these are not well-suited for enterprise architecture in a modern, agile organization. The new approach presented in this book is based on the author's experience with large enterprise architecture efforts. The approach leverages research into complex adaptive systems and emergent behaviors, where a few simple rules result in complex and efficient enterprise behaviors. Simplifying the task of establishing and maintaining the enterprise architecture cuts the costs of building and maintaining the architecture and frees up those resources for more productive pursuits. System implementers are given the freedom to rapidly adapt to changing user needs without the blessing of the enterprise modeling priesthood, and the architecture is transformed from a static pile of obscure models and documents into an operational framework that can be actively used to manage an enterprise's resources to better achieve business goals. The enterprise architect is free to stop focusing on building and maintaining models and start focusing on achieving business goals. What You'll Learn Refocus enterprise architecture on business needs by eliminating most of the enterprise-level models Delegate tasks to the development teams who do system implementation Document business goals, establish strategies for achieving those goals, and measure progress toward those goals Measure the results and gauge whether the enterprise architecture is achieving its goals Utilize appropriate modeling techniques that can be effectively used in an enterprise architecture Who This Book Is For Architecture practitioners and architecture managers: Practitioners are experienced architects who have used existing frameworks such as Zachman, and have experience with formal architecture modeling and/or model-based system engineerin...

Abstract: Powerful lessons in forward-thinking leadership from the global business pioneer who turned IDG into a $3 billion technology media and venture capital empire Like Steve Jobs, Patrick McGovern created a worldwide multibillion-dollar industry by thinking differently, disrupting old business models, and embracing new global trends. He drove the future forward and never looked back. His company, International Data Group (IDG), quickly became a global powerhouse with information technology publications in markets around the world. IDG broke new ground in the 1980s by opening offices in China, the Soviet Union, Eastern Europe, and other markets deemed off-limits. IDG thrived across a series of technology and media industry shifts- from mainframe computers to minicomputers to personal computers, from print to digital, and through into the age of the Internet and smartphones-that upended many rivals. Living at the intersection of these classic disruptions, McGovern never missed a beat. And he understood well before most that a revolution in information technology was underway and not only was there money to be made but that this business would soon become the world's largest industry. His leadership in the creation of one of the world's leading brain research institutes at MIT only served to cement his legacy. His bold vision and fearless risk-taking made McGovern a legend among leaders. In today's ever-changing global marketplace, his leadership lessons are more timely and important than ever. In Future Forward , leaders will find 10 essential lessons that can be easily applied to any business, from small startups to giant corporations. These include: "Let's try it. Encourage entrepreneurial behavior and back it up with serious commitment." "Decentralize. When building a global empire, every market is local." "Love your employees. Adore your customers." Leaders at every level will discover outside-the-box approaches to employee engagement, entrepreneurial commitment, and radical innovation. These are the lessons of a true visionary. This is how successful leaders take risks, take charge, and take the future by storm.

Abstract: A "Highest Rated CEO" who has transformed his organization into a billion-dollar company and a "Top Place to Work" shows leaders how truly prioritizing employees isn't just good for employees-it's good for business. Imagine a company where everybody loves to work, where employees feel not just "satisfied" but truly cared for, respected, and energized. Think of the impact this would have on recruitment, retention, customer satisfaction, innovation, and overall performance. Aron Ain, the award-winning CEO of Kronos, a global provider of workforce management and human capital management cloud solutions, believes that anything is possible when people are inspired. By embracing employee development and engagement as a growth strategy, Ain transformed his company's culture and built a billion-dollar business. This book takes leaders and managers inside Kronos's highly admired WorkInspired culture, showing them the surprisingly simple rules to follow to replicate that success. Ain's inspiring guide reveals the best practices that have earned Kronos distinctions on coveted lists, such as Glassdoor's 100 Best Places to Work, Fortune's 100 Best Companies to Work For, Forbes's America's Best Employers, and the Boston Globe's Top Places to Work. These include over-communicating and truth-telling, trusting your people again and again, holding managers accountable for being great at what they do, allowing employees flexible schedules and open vacation time, challenging your people to put the company out of business with new and revolutionary ideas, and welcoming back boomerang employees. Many executives talk about how "their people are their greatest asset." Ain challenges leaders to "walk the talk" and put people first, whether they oversee a team of five or an organization of 500,000. When they do, employees won't be the only ones who thank them. Customers and shareholders will, too.

Abstract: In 2016, $4.6 trillion of merchandise was left in abandoned e-commerce shopping carts. Every year, the U.S. economy loses $3 trillion dollars in productivity due to excess bureaucracy. Red tape and over-complicated licenses have contributed to China's GDP exceeding India's by $82 trillion over the span of just three decades. If you're a business leader, these statistics should give you nightmares. According to science-based marketing and business expert Roger Dooley, they illustrate the real and growing threat of "friction," which he defines as the unnecessary expenditure of time, effort, or money in performing a task. In today's high-speed, customer-empowered world, the levels of swiftness and efficiency of business transactions will determine ultimate success or failure. In this groundbreaking guide, Dooley helps you spot the inevitable points of friction in your organization, and he provides the tools and insight you need to eliminate them. By truly understanding the impact friction can have, you'll be able to establish positive habits and eliminate negative ones-all with the end result of building a company that's the envy of your industry. Friction takes you step-by-step through the process of: •Empowering frank conversations •Guiding individual and team behaviors •Getting ahead of friction •Optimizing the customer experience •Building a frictionless corporate culture Combining scientific research with real-life examples of leaders who have conquered business friction, Dooley teaches you how to identify roadblocks, alter them for the benefit of both business and customer, and create positive, lasting change. If you're in a leadership position, now is the time to declare war on friction-before your competitors do. Stamp out ridiculous rules, pointless procedures, and meaningless meetings. Become a relentless advocate for the customer and for minimizing customer effort. Lubricate every point of friction and make your company run like a well-oiled machine. Friction provides the know-how you need to lead your company to industry dominance.

Abstract: Build a dynamic work culture that inspires employees and promotes organizational growth Evidence shows culture drives fiscal performance. It's no secret that a toxic work culture can drive away employees and drive down profits. Creating a dynamic work culture that promotes both employee and business growth is key to ensuring an organization's success. However, culture is a moving target and hard to get right. In Great Mondays , brand strategist Josh Levine introduces a proven formula for building and managing a workplace culture that maximizes employee engagement, performance, and retention for long-term business success. Written in a punchy, outcomes-driven style, Great Mondays reveals the six components for driving culture change in any type of organization: •Purpose: the motivating force-the North Star of an organization that both inspires and guides •Values: the powerful culture guardrails that establish behavioral expectations of employees and leaders •Behaviors: the culturally-aligned symptoms and actions of a work culture •Recognition: the ways in which organizations can more effectively reward employees •Rituals: the regular activities that create and strengthen relationships between individuals •Cues: the physical and behavioral reminders designed to reconnect everyone to the organization's purpose and goals for the future With real-life case studies drawn from Silicon Valley heavy hitters, prominent nonprofits, major corporations, and respected universities, leaders of all levels will find expert guidance and proven strategies they can put to use to create a dynamic culture where employees thrive and business grows.

Abstract: The rule-smashing guide for motivated working women who want to stop following someone else's rules and take charge of their own success. You leaned in like a palm tree in a hurricane. You cracked the confidence code. You're determined not to be a nice girl, but a #GirlBoss. You've learned you can't have it all, but you still try anyway. You know all of this. You've read the books, downloaded the apps, vision boarded and journaled your way to oblivion and back, to no avail. Whether you're stuck in middle management, stalled in mid-career, or mulling over a major career change, sometimes the proverbial glass ceiling feels very real indeed-a barrier keeping you from fulfilling your potential. Unlike other books, which focus on fixing you, Kick Some Glass empowers you to break through your glass ceiling and guides you toward understanding your context and uncovering what you really want, what your definition of success is, what your values are, and how to set the goals to reach your potential. This is no one-size-fits-all career guide. It's a top-to-bottom, inside-out, do-it-yourself makeover with the focus completely on you. In each chapter, you'll be asked to evaluate specific parts of your work life, home life, personal strengths and weaknesses, past history and present obstacles, both internal and external, so you can: •Live your intention and design a meaningful life at any stage •Identify the underlying values that are the core of your being •Get comfortable with your personal power and understand what it means •Uncover the conscious and subconscious mental models that are holding you back •Take calculated risks through planful action with a clear direction •Let go of things you cannot control or change •Become more resilient, adaptable, and self-aware •Make the choices and tradeoffs necessary to fulfill your goals •Decide if it's time to reinvent your career-and prepare for your next move •Find that elusive work-life balance that's right for you •Create your own definition of success-and make it happen for you Best of all, you'll be able to map out a career course for yourself that is based on your own definition of success, play and win by your own rules, and pay it forward by busting down doors for the next generation of women. In the end, this book will help you uncover who you truly are and approach your professional life in ways that are authentic and most meaningful to you-and no one else. After all, only you hold the answers. It's t...

Abstract: The secret to business success? Get REAL and be HUMAN! As human beings, we are built to connect and form relationships. So, it should be no surprise that relationships must also translate into the workplace, where we spend most of our time! Companies that recognize this will retain the most productive, creative, and loyal employees, and invariably seize the competitive edge. The most successful leaders are those who actively form quality relationships with their employees, who honor fundamental human qualities-authenticity, openness, and basic politeness-and apply them day in and day out. Paying attention and genuinely caring about the effects people have on one another other is key to developing a winning culture where people perform at the top of their game and want to work. As a workplace strategist and business coach, Erica Keswin has spent over 20 years working with top business leaders and executives to build successful organizations that honor relationships. Featuring case studies from top brands such as, Lyft, Starbucks, Mogul, and SoulCycle, to name a few, Bring Your Human to Work distills the key practices of the most human companies into applicable advice that any business leader can use to build a "human workplace." These building blocks include: •Understanding your company's role in the world, beyond financial profit •Encouraging employees to be healthy in body and spirit •Running your meetings with clear purpose •Making space for face-to-face interaction •Building professional development into company culture •Inspiring your workforce to give back to the community •Simply saying "thank you" A human company is real, genuine, aligned , and true to itself . A real company flaunts its humanity, instead of hiding it. It's what the most successful, sustainable companies are doing today, and there's no reason yours can't be the same. Keswin's leadership lessons foster fairness, devotion, and joy in the workplace-all critical elements of a successful business. By bringing your human to work, you can design a workplace that is good for people, great for business, and just might change the world.

Abstract: Abstract What is the difference between a virtual machine and a Docker container? A virtual machine (VM) is like a house. It is fully contained with its own plumbing and heating and cooling system. If you want another house, you build a new foundation, with new walls, new plumbing, and its own heating and cooling system. VMs are large. They start their own operating systems. Containers are like apartments in an apartment building. They share infrastructure. They can be many different sizes. You can have different sizes depending on the needs. Containers "live" in a Docker host. If you build a house, you need many resources. If you build an apartment building, each unit shares resources. Like an apartment, Docker is smaller and satisfies specific needs, is more agile, and more easily changed. This IBM® Redbooks® publication examines the installation and operation of Docker Enterprise Edition on the IBM Z® platform.

Abstract: Abstract As big data becomes more ubiquitous, businesses are wondering how they can best leverage it to gain insight into their most important business questions. Using machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL) in big data environments can identify historical patterns and build artificial intelligence (AI) models that can help businesses to improve customer experience, add services and offerings, identify new revenue streams or lines of business (LOBs), and optimize business or manufacturing operations. The power of AI for predictive analytics is being harnessed across all industries, so it is important that businesses familiarize themselves with all of the tools and techniques that are available for integration with their data lake environments. In this IBM® Redbooks® publication, we cover the best practices for deploying and integrating some of the best AI solutions on the market, including: IBM Watson Machine Learning Accelerator (see note for product naming) IBM Watson Studio Local IBM Power Systems™ IBM Spectrum™ Scale IBM Data Science Experience (IBM DSX) IBM Elastic Storage™ Server Hortonworks Data Platform (HDP) Hortonworks DataFlow (HDF) H2O Driverless AI We map out all the integrations that are possible with our different AI solutions and how they can integrate with your existing or new data lake. We also walk you through some of our client use cases and show you how some of the industry leaders are using Hortonworks, IBM PowerAI, and IBM Watson Studio Local to drive decision making. We also advise you on your deployment options, when to use a GPU, and why you should use the IBM Elastic Storage Server (IBM ESS) to improve storage management. Lastly, we describe how to integrate IBM Watson Machine Learning Accelerator and Hortonworks with or without IBM Watson Studio Local, how to access real-time data, and security. Note: IBM Watson Machine Learning Accelerator is the new product name for IBM PowerAI Enterprise. Note: Hortonworks merged with Cloudera in January 2019. The new company is called Cloudera. References to Hortonworks as a business entity in this publication are now referring to the merged company. Product names beginning with Hortonworks continue to be marketed and sold under their original names.

Abstract: The Pragmatic Guide to Driving Value and Disrupting Markets with Blockchain "Much has been written about blockchain in the past few years: what it is and what it is not (at various levels of detail), as well as the technology's long-term strategic value for companies, industries, and economies. However, what we've been missing is a practical, operational, 'how to' set of steps for creating, implementing, and operating a blockchain-based solution. This book aims to fill that gap. It's an invaluable tool for anyone ready to take the plunge and start taking advantage of this remarkable technology.' -Irving Wladawsky-Berger, research affiliate, MIT; columnist, WSJ CIO Journal; VP Emeritus, IBM Blockchain enables enterprises to reinvent processes and business models and to pursue radically disruptive applications. Blockchain for Business is a concise, accessible, and pragmatic guide to both the technology and the opportunities it creates. Authored by three experts from IBM's Enterprise Blockchain practice, it introduces industry-specific and cross-industry use cases, and reviews best-practice approaches to planning and delivering blockchain projects. With a relentless focus on real-world business outcomes, the authors reveal what blockchain can do, what it can't do yet, and where it's headed. Understand five elements that make blockchain so disruptive: transparency, immutability, security, consensus, and smart contracts Explore key use cases: cross-border payments, food and drug safety, provenance, trade finance, clinical trials, land registries, and more See how trusted blockchain networks are facilitating entirely new business models Compare blockchain types: permissioned, permissionless, private, public, federated, and hybrid Anticipate key technical, business, regulatory, and governance challenges Build blockchain financial models, investment rubrics, and risk frameworks Organize and manage teams to transform blockchain plans into reality Whether you're a senior decision maker, technical professional, customer, or investor, Blockchain for Business will help you cut through the hype and objectively assess blockchain's potential in your business. Keywords: Object-oriented programming (Computer science) ; Electronic books ; Electronic books ; local
Abstract: Object-oriented programming (OOP) is the foundation of modern programming languages, including C++, Java, C#, Visual Basic .NET, Ruby, Objective-C, and Swift. Objects also form the basis for many web technologies such as JavaScript, Python, and PHP. It is of vital importance to learn the fundamental concepts of object orientation before starting to use object-oriented development environments. OOP promotes good design practices, code portability, and reuse-but it requires a shift in thinking to be fully understood. Programmers new to OOP should resist the temptation to jump directly into a particular programming language or a modeling language, and instead first take the time to learn what author Matt Weisfeld calls "the object-oriented thought process." Written by a developer for developers who want to improve their understanding of object-oriented technologies, The Object-Oriented Thought Process provides a solutions-oriented approach to object-oriented programming. Readers will learn to understand the proper uses of inheritance and composition, the difference between aggregation and association, and the important distinction between interfaces and implementations. While programming technologies have been changing and evolving over the years, object-oriented concepts remain a constant-no matter what the platform. This revised edition focuses on the OOP technologies that have survived the past 20 years and remain at its core, with new and expanded coverage of design patterns, avoiding dependencies, and the SOLID principles to help make software designs understandable, flexible, and maintainable.
