Abstract: "World War III never happened, and yet material evidence of this contest is strewn everywhere: resting at the bottom of the ocean, rusting in deserts, orbiting Earth. Military Waste examines the lives and stories of American civilians confronted with what is left over and cast aside when a society is permanently ready for war. They encounter risks and opportunities that manifest whether or not any specific war ever takes place, questioning what led to the largest military the world has ever seen and pondering what will become of its remains"--Provided by publisher

Abstract: Wall Street goes to the ends of the earth -- Fast subjects : the rituals of MBA training -- Accounting for business -- The currency of culture -- Managing the margins -- Partial answers : the uses of ethnographic capitalist realism -- Frontiers of capitalism.
Abstract: "A generation of aspiring business managers has been taught to see a world of difference as a world of opportunity. In Making Global MBAs, Andrew Orta examines the culture of contemporary business education, and the ways MBA programs participate in the production of global capitalism through the education of the business subjects who will be managing it. Based on extensive field research in several leading US business schools, this groundbreaking ethnography exposes what the culture of MBA training says about contemporary understandings of capitalism in the context of globalization. Orta details the rituals of MBA life and the ways MBA curricula cultivate both habits of fast-paced technical competence and "softer" qualities and talents thought to be essential to unlocking the value of international cultural difference while managing its risks. Making Global MBAs provides an essential critique of neoliberal thinking for students and professionals in a wide variety of fields"--Provided by publisher

Abstract: "In the post-World War I American climate of isolationism, nativism, democratic expansion of civic rights, and consumerism, Italian-born star Rodolfo Valentino and Italy's dictator Benito Mussolini became surprising paragons of authoritarian male power and mass appeal. Drawing on extensive research in the United States and Italy, Giorgio Bertellini's work shows how their popularity, both political and erotic, largely depended on the efforts of public opinion managers, including publicists, journalists, and even ambassadors. Beyond the democratic celebrations of the Jazz Age, the promotion of their charismatic masculinity, while short-lived, inaugurated the now-familiar convergence of popular celebrity and political authority"--Provided by publisher.

Abstract: "In the last decade, the United States has poured over a billion dollars into a network of interagency intelligence centers called "fusion centers." Fusion centers were ostensibly set up to prevent terrorism, but politicians, the press, and policy advocates have repeatedly criticized these centers for failures. Why have these security systems persisted? Pacifying the Homeland travels inside the world of intelligence fusion and sees past the apparent failure of fusion centers to reveal a broader shift away from mass incarceration and toward a more surveillance- and police-intensive system of social regulation"--Provided by publisher

Abstract: "Getting Wrecked provides a rich ethnographic account of women battling addiction as they cycle through jail, prison, and community treatment programs in Massachusetts. Since incarceration has become a predominant American social policy for managing the problem of drug use, including the opioid epidemic, this book examines how prisons and jails have attempted concurrent programs of punishment and treatment to deal with inmates struggling with a diagnosis of substance use disorder. An addiction physician and a medical anthropologist, Kimberly Sue powerfully illustrates the impacts of incarceration on women's lives as they seek well-being and better health while confronting lives marked by structural violence, gender inequity, and ongoing trauma"--Provided by publisher

Abstract: Introduction: Once sold, twice taken : a life undone -- Dream it, own it : genealogies of speculation and dispossession in the valley -- Put out : bank seizure at the poverty line -- Robbing Peter to pay Paul : relocating the middle class -- Can't work the system : the troubled sympathies of corporate bureaucrats -- We shall not be moved : the shifting moral economies of debt refusal -- You can't go home again
Abstract: "In the aftermath of the 2008 financial crisis, more than 14 million U.S. homeowners lost their homes to foreclosure. Focusing on the hard-hit Sacramento Valley, Noelle Stout uncovers the hellish bureaucracy that organized the largest bank seizure of residential homes in U.S. history. Stout reveals the failure of banks' mortgage assistance programs, backed by over $300 billion of federal funds, to deliver on the promise of relief. Unlike the programs of the Great Depression, in which the government took on the toxic mortgage debt of Americans, these corporate bureaucracies ultimately denied 70 percent of homeowner applicants. In the voices of bank employees and 'dispossessed' homeowners, Stout exposes the tense confrontations between borrowers and banks, reveals how call center representatives felt about denying appeals, and shares the fears of families living on the brink of eviction. Stout exposes the everyday life of rising inequality--for whites who felt their middle-class life unraveling to communities of color who experienced a more precipitous and dire decline. Trapped in a maze of mortgage assistance, borrowers began to view debt refusal as a moral response to lenders. Stout shows how these seemingly mundane bureaucratic dramas came to redefine the meaning of debt and dispossession, opening the door to current contests about the meaning of indebtedness." - Provided by publisher

Abstract: Who polices immigration? : establishing the role of state and local law enforcement agencies in immigration control -- Setting up the local deportation regime -- Policing immigrant Nashville -- The driving to deportation pipeline -- Inside the jail -- Lost in translation : two worlds of immigration policing
Abstract: "Protect, Serve, and Deport exposes the on-the-ground workings of local immigration enforcement in Nashville, Tennessee. Between 2007 and 2012, Nashville's local jail participated in an immigration enforcement program called 287(g), which turned jail employees into immigration officers who identified over ten thousand removable immigrants for deportation. The vast majority of those identified for removal were not serious criminals, but Latino residents arrested by local police for minor violations. Protect, Serve, and Deport explains how local politics, state laws, institutional policies, and police practices work together to deliver removable immigrants into an expanding federal deportation system, conveying powerful messages about race, citizenship, and belonging."--Provided by publisher

Abstract: "The Dream Is Over tells the extraordinary story of the 1960 Master Plan for Higher Education in California, created by visionary University of California President Clark Kerr and his contemporaries. The Master Plan's equality of opportunity policy brought college within reach of millions of American families for the first time and fashioned the world's leading system of public research universities. The California idea became the leading model for higher education across the world and has had great influence in the rapid growth of universities in China and East Asia. Yet remarkably, the political conditions supporting the California idea in California itself have evaporated. Universal access is faltering, public tuition is rising, the great research universities are under growing pressure, and educational participation in California, once the national leader, lags way behind. Can the social values embodied in Kerr's vision be renewed?"--Provided by publisher.

Abstract: "Who are the dominant owners of US public debt? Is it widely held, or concentrated in the hands of a few? Does ownership of public debt give these bondholders power over our government? What do we make of the fact that foreign-owned debt has ballooned to nearly 50 percent today? Until now, we have not had any satisfactory answers to these questions. Public Debt, Inequality, and Power is the first comprehensive historical analysis of public debt ownership in the United States. It reveals that ownership of federal bonds has been increasingly concentrated in the hands of the 1 percent over the last three decades. Based on extensive and original research, Public Debt, Inequality, and Power will shock and enlighten"--Provided by publisher.

Abstract: "Do the United States and France, both post-industrial democracies, differ in their views and laws concerning discrimination? Marie Mercat-Bruns, a Franco-American scholar, examines the differences in how the two countries approach discrimination. Bringing together prominent legal scholars--including Robert Post, Linda Krieger, Martha Minow, Reva Siegel, Susan Sturm, Richard Ford, and others--Mercat-Bruns demonstrates how the two nations have adopted divergent strategies. The United States continues, with mixed success at "colorblind" policies, to deal with issues of diversity in university enrollment, class action sex-discrimination lawsuits, and rampant police violence against African American men and women. In France, the country has banned the full-face veil while making efforts to present itself as a secular republic. Young men and women whose parents and grandparents came from sub-Sahara and North Africa are stuck coping with a society that fails to take into account the barriers to employment and education they face. Discrimination at Work provides an incisive comparative analysis of how the nature of discrimination in both countries has changed, now often hidden, or steeped in deep unconscious bias. While it is rare for employers in both countries to openly discriminate, deep systemic discrimination exists, rooted in structural and environmental causes and the ways each state has dealt with difference in general. Invigorating and incisive, the book examines hot-button issues of sexual harassment, gender discrimination, and equality for LGBT individuals, delivering comparisons meant to further social equality and fundamental human rights across borders"--Provided by publisher.

Abstract: "In 2014, the arrest and detention of thousands of desperate young migrants at the southwest border of the United States exposed the U.S. government's shadowy juvenile detention system, which had escaped public scrutiny for years. This book tells the story of six Central American and Mexican children who are driven from their homes by violence and deprivation, and who embark alone, risking their lives, on the perilous journey north. They suffer coercive arrests at the U.S. border, then land in detention, only to be caught up in the battle to obtain legal status. Whose Child Am I? looks inside a vast, labyrinthine system by documenting in detail the experiences of these youths, beginning with their arrest by immigration authorities, their subsequent placement in federal detention, followed by their appearance in deportation proceedings and release from custody, and, finally, ending with their struggle to build new lives in the United States. This book shows how the U.S. government got into the business of detaining children and what we can learn from this troubled history"...Provided by publisher

Abstract: We understand very little about the billions of dollars that flow throughout the world from migrants back to their home countries. In this rigorous and illuminating work, Matt Bakker, an economic sociologist, examines how these migrant remittances - the resources of some of the world's least affluent people - have come to be seen in recent years as a fundamental contributor to development in the migrant-sending states of the global south. This book analyzes how the connection between remittances and development was forged through the concrete political and intellectual practices of policy entrepreneurs within a variety of institutional settings, from national government agencies and international development organizations to nongovernmental policy foundations and think tanks
