Die Kritik daran ist vielfältig, aber bisher eher lose verwoben: Wo steht die Debatte – oder: wo stehen die Debatten? Welche Perspektiven gibt es, aus historischer, musealer, künstlerischer, politischer, sportlicher oder denkmalschützender Perspektive? Wo lassen sich Brücken der Kritik schlagen, wo sind unterschiedliche Perspektiven widersprüchlich, an welchen Stellen bedarf es grundlegender Neuorientierung oder Neujustierung der Debatte? Der Sammelband versucht, diese Fragen anzureißen, Wege der Auseinandersetzung zu skizzieren oder zu initiieren, aber auch grundlegende Probleme zu benennen.
    Abstract: Anyone who visits Berlin’s Olympic Park will inevitably stumble across the continued effects of the site's Nazi monumentality—and also its largely unbroken tradition of ethnic and anti-Semitic monumentality. The criticism of this is diverse, but so far rather loosely interwoven: Where does the debate stand—or, indeed, where do the debates stand? What views are there from the perspectives of history, museums, art, politics, sport or monument protection? Where can bridges of criticism be built, where are the different perspectives contradictory, and where is fundamental reorientation or readjustment of the debate(s) required? This anthology attempts to address these questions, not only to outline or initiate paths of debate but also to identify fundamental problems.

    Abstract: This textbook connects three vibrant areas at the interface between economics and computer science: algorithmic game theory, computational social choice, and fair division. It thus offers an interdisciplinary treatment of collective decision making from an economic and computational perspective. Part I introduces to algorithmic game theory, focusing on both noncooperative and cooperative game theory. Part II introduces to computational social choice, focusing on both preference aggregation (voting) and judgment aggregation. Part III introduces to fair division, focusing on the division of both a single divisible resource ("cake-cutting") and multiple indivisible and unshareable resources ("multiagent resource allocation"). In all these parts, much weight is given to the algorithmic and complexity-theoretic aspects of problems arising in these areas, and the interconnections between the three parts are of central interest.

    Abstract: This book investigates state-building, distorted identities, and separatism in the Republic of Moldova. It presents research on the historical preconditions and spread of the secessionist movement in Transnistria, the war in the Dniester River valley, and the diplomatic deadlock of the Transnistrian problem. It examines the conflicting positions that political parties, the public, and experts have taken towards the problems that challenge the nation- and state-building processes in this post-Soviet state. Additional focal points include the reassertion of Russia's power in the post-Soviet space, Ukraine's effort to become a major political player in the region, and Romania’s attempt to retrieve its influence in Moldova. This study demonstrates that separatism generates mutually exclusive nation-building projects on the territory of a single state, that international actors play a significant role in this process, and that domestic and external factors hinder the development of a resolution of the so-called "frozen conflict" over Transnistria.

    Abstract: Between working men and women (which may include "free" wage earners, chattel slaves, indentured labourers, sharecroppers, domestic servants, and many others) and those employing them, there has always been a constant - mostly silent but sometimes overt - struggle concerning employers' discretionary power and over the interpretation of formal and informal rules. There is a constantly shifting frontier of control, that is, an ongoing struggle for control in the workplace, with managers and supervisors trying to increase their power over their subordinates, and their subordinates, in reaction, trying to maintain and increase their relative autonomy. The detailed case studies in this volume span three centuries and cover different parts of the world. Still, they speak to each other in many ways, highlighting the fact that power at work, whether on the shopfloor or beyond, results from a wide range of complex interrelations. Between technological innovations and the ways in which they are actually implemented. Between the division of labour at the site of production or service provision and changing standards of social segmentation beyond the premises of the company, which can be reinforced - or weakened - by management strategies of utilizing labour power as well as workers' reaction to these strategies. And finally, between politics in production, which shape the relations between capital and labour on the shopfloor, and state politics of production, which cannot be understood without reference to broader developments in economy and society

    Abstract: Global Labour History has rapidly gained ground as a field of study in the 21st century, attracting interest in the Global South and North alike. Scholars derive inspiration from the broad perspective and the effort to perceive connections between global trends over time in work and labour relations, incorporating slaves, indentured labourers and sharecroppers, housewives and domestic servants. Casting this sweeping analytical gaze, this book discusses the core concepts ‘capitalism’ and ‘workers’, and refines notions such as ‘coerced labour’, ‘household strategies’ and ‘labour markets’. It explores in new ways the connections between labourers in different parts of the world, arguing that both ‘globalisation’ and modern labour management originated in agriculture in the Global South and were only later introduced in Northern industrial settings. It reveals that 19th-century chattel slavery was frequently replaced by other forms of coerced labour, and it reconstructs the laborious 20th-century attempts of the International Labour Organisation to regulate labour standards supra-nationally. The book also pays attention to the relational inequality through which workers in wealthy countries benefit from the exploitation of those in poor countries. The final part addresses workers’ resistance and acquiescence: why collective actions often have unanticipated consequences; why and how workers sometimes organise massive flights from exploitation and oppression; and why ‘proletarian revolutions’ took place in pre-industrial or industrialising countries and never in fully developed capitalist societies.

Dabei zeigen sich je nach politischem System deutliche Abweichungen: Autokratien nutzen Proxys als "Puffer" gegenüber Demokratien, um für ihre Taten nicht belangt zu werden. Für Demokratien dagegen können Berichte privater IT-Unternehmen "Täter-Wissen" kommunizieren sowie Handlungsdruck infolge politischer Verantwortungszuweisungen reduzieren.

    Abstract: "Es gehört zu den größten Mängeln fast aller Theorien der Demokratie, mit erstaunlicher Hartnäckigkeit immer wieder zu vergessen, dass die meisten Mitglieder des von ihnen lauthals beschworenen Souveräns stets auch arbeitende Subjekte sind". Welche Rolle spielt die Organisation von Arbeitsverhältnissen für die Bestandssicherung eines demokratischen Gemeinwesens? Das ist die Frage, der Axel Honneth in seiner neuen großen Monographie nachgeht, deren Schlüsselbegriffe "gesellschaftliche Arbeit" und "soziale Arbeitsteilung" sind. Seine zentrale These lautet, dass die Teilnahme an der demokratischen Willensbildung an die Voraussetzung einer transparent und fair geregelten Arbeitsteilung gebunden ist. Honneth begründet zunächst, warum es gerechtfertigt ist, die Arbeitsverhältnisse auf ihre Demokratieverträglichkeit hin zu prüfen. Dann zeichnet er die Entwicklung der Arbeitsbedingungen seit dem Beginn des Kapitalismus im 19. Jahrhundert nach. Fluchtpunkt dieses mit eindrücklichen literarischen Zeugnissen illustrierten historischen Streifzugs, der unter anderem in die Welt der Landarbeiter, der - zumeist weiblichen - Dienstboten und der ersten Industriearbeiter führt, ist die Vermutung, dass die heutigen Arbeitsverhältnisse zunehmend die Chancen zur aktiven Teilnahme an der demokratischen Meinungs- und Willensbildung untergraben. Daher wird im letzten Teil des Buches umrissen, an welchen Scharnierstellen eine Politik der Arbeit heute anzusetzen hätte, um den sich abzeichnenden Missständen entgegenzuwirken und zu einer dringend benötigten Neubelebung demokratischer Partizipation beizutragen

    Abstract: Across Europe, people are deeply concerned about the state of democracy. This book shifts the attention away from ever-changing populist politicians that capture newspaper headlines to the centre-left and centre-right people's parties that used to buttress the democratic order over the past decades, but which are now in steep decline. Why does the crisis of these parties contribute so profoundly to today's crisis of democracy? And why were these parties so important for the stabilization and legitimation of democracy in the past century in the first place? By providing a long-term and transnational account of the history of democracy in modern Europe, the book reveals the striking parallels between the history of democracy and the history of the people's parties since 1918. The first part of the book shows how the failure to turn traditional working-class and confessional mass parties into people's parties played a vital role in the collapse of democracy in the 1920s and 1930s. It also explores the attractiveness of the people's party ideal centred on moderation, compromise and openness to pioneering politicians in the mid-century. The second part of the book then traces the practical application and breakthrough of this ideal in the decades after World War II and shows how this contributed to the stabilization and legitimation of democracy in the postwar decades. In the final part of the book, Corduwener turns to the slow decline of the people's parties since the mid-1970s. It explores how their failure to represent volatile and polarized societies was reflected in their aim to turn into 'open' and 'flexible' parties focused primarily on providing governmental efficiency - and how this eventually turned against them by alienating their members and voters. In so doing, Corduwener offers an original and timely study of twentieth century democracy that transcends traditional party groupings, divisions between eras, and national boundaries.

    Abstract: This book explores continuity and ruptures in the historical use of visual representations in science and related disciplines such as art history and anthropology. The book also considers more recent developments that attest to the unprecedented importance of scientific visualizations, such as video recordings, animations, simulations, graphs, and enhanced realities. The volume collects historical reflections concerned with the use of visual material, visualization, and vision in science from a historical perspective, ranging across multiple cultures from antiquity until present day. The focus is on visual representations such as drawings, prints, tables, mathematical symbols, photos, data visualizations, mapping processes, and (on a meta-level) visualizations of data extracted from historical sources to visually support the historical research itself. Continuity and ruptures between the past and present use of visual material are presented against the backdrop of the epistemic functions of visual material in science. The function of visual material is defined according to three major epistemic categories: exploration, transformation, and transmission of knowledge.

At a time when neo-liberal, post-national and nationalist visions alike have challenged democratic welfare nationalism, the book offers a transnational historical perspective to the political dynamics of current changes. While particularly focusing on Nordic countries, often seen as the quintessential 'models' of the welfare state, the book collectively sheds light on the 'history of the present' of nation states bearing the character of a welfare state. Initial chapters discuss the contested roles and meanings of democracy in the formation of the so-called 'Nordic model' of welfare, exploring its development in connection with rhetorical de-ideologization during and after the Cold War and with concerns about global development. Contributors further examine the ways in which national welfare states and their democratic dimensions are reshaped in the context of post-national regulation regimes of globalized and financialized capitalism. In the final chapters, the book explores the implications of welfare nationalism for cross-border mobility, analysing paradoxes and inherent tensions at the heart of contemporary migration politics. The analyses point to the integral role of nationalism in the formation of the democratic welfare states, as well as in the present-day goals of national competitiveness and security. Providing key theoretical insights for the study of welfare nationalism, this book is essential reading for scholars, researchers and students of the social and political sciences who are interested in the enduring transformation of the welfare state, and particularly those investigating the emergence and growth of the Nordic model.     Abstract: Der belgische Schriftsteller und Historiker Reybrouck ist durch ein monumentales Werk über die Geschichte Kongos (siehe "Kongo", ID-A 24/12) schon einem gröe︣ren Publikum bekannt geworden. Die in diesem Buch beschriebene Revolusi (Revolution) bezeichnet die Periode, während der die Indonesier nach der Besetzung durch Japan einen Guerilla-Krieg gegen die zurückkehrenden niederländischen Kolonialherren führten und schliesslich im Dezember 1949 die internationale Anerkennung der im August 1945 proklamierten nationalen Unabhängigkeit erreichten. Für Reybrouck waren diese Ereignisse, die ausserhalb Indonesiens bis heute kaum beachtet werden, weltgeschichtlich bedeutsam. Er schildert die ungemein komplexen diplomatischen, militärischen und innenpolitischen Entwicklungen lebhaft und auch für den Laien gut nachvollziehbar. Dabei bezieht er sich auf fast 200 ausführliche Interviews mit, überwiegend indonesischen, Zeitzeugen. In der fesselnden Darstellung spannt Reybrouck den Bogen von den Anfängen der indonesischen Geschichte bis in die 1950er-Jahre und vermag es, auch den Blick Betroffener einzubeziehen.     Abstract: Die 1948 im Auftrag der US-amerikanischen Militärregierung gegründete Zeitschrift Der Monat war ein intellektueller Brennspiegel der jungen Bundesrepublik, in dem die politischen Deutungskonflikte der Zeit ausgetragen wurden, mit Fokus auf den Nationalsozialismus, den Sowjetkommunismus und die Zukunft der westlichen Welt. Zu ihrem Renommee trug bei, dass sie zahlreiche prominente Autoren wie Hannah Arendt, Raymond Aron, Hans Kohn, Herbert Lüthy, George F. Kennan oder auch die Ex-Kommunisten Arthur Koestler, George Orwell und Richard Löwenthal versammelte.Joachim Gmehling zeigt, welches Bild in der Zeitschrift vom nationalsozialistischen und sowjetkommunistischen Herrschaftssystem gezeichnet wurde und wie der Vergleich der beiden Diktaturen ausfiel. Dabei rekonstruiert er nicht nur den Einfluss der zeitgenössischen Totalitarismustheorien sowie die Imperative der US-amerikanischen Besatzungspolitik in Westdeutschland, sondern geht auch auf die CIA-Hintergründe des Periodikums ein.Eine Studie zu den Anfängen des Kalten Krieges, die angesichts der vielschichtigen Krise der westlichen Demokratien an Aktualität gewinnt.

    Abstract: This book sheds light on the theory of political leadership, which is still an under-researched field of political science. It is related to the philosophical argument about determinism versus activism and helps to understand the basic conflict of the 21st century between liberal democracy and new authoritarianism. The book looks at Max Weber’s typology of political rule and his concept of the ethics of responsibility, which are key to the theory of leadership. The author shows that the unfinished contest between democracy and new authoritarianism in the 21st century confirms the importance of leadership in old and new democracies as well as in the neo-authoritarian regimes and calls for a new type of political leaders. Political scientists and political sociologists tend to concentrate on the analysis of social forces, often to the extent of ignoring the active role of leading individuals. Two main trends in 19th century philosophy (Hegelian determinism vs. Carlyle’s romanticism) can be reconciled by adopting which interpretation of history based on the concept of „alternative roads“, the choice between which makes political leadership crucial for understanding politics. Leaders play particularly important roles in times of crises. In the 20th century such crises were created by two world wars (with the crucial role of such leaders as Woodrow Wilson, Winston Churcill, Charles de Gaulle, but also Adolph Hitler und Joseph Stalin) and revolutions (with Wladimir Lenin and Mao Zedong as revolutionary leaders of totalitarian states). During the cold war emerged a new type of democratic leadership devoted to the solidarity of democratic states and to the European integration (Konrad Adenauer, Willy Brandt, Robert Schuman). The transition to democracy in the last quarter of the 20th century depended to a large degree on the quality of leaders as demonstrated both by successes and failures of post-dictatorial regimes (Mikhail Gorbachev and Boris Yeltsin in Russia, Lech Walesa and Wojciech Jaruzelski in Poland, Adolfo Suarez in Spain, Nelson Mandela in South Africa etc.).

    Abstract: When U.S. war resisters turned to Canada as refuge during the Vietnam War and the Afghanistan/Iraq Wars, they not only hoped to forestall deployment to a combat zone but also to build new lives and make a new home abroad. In her empirical study, Sarah J. Grünendahl explores and juxtaposes how well the two war resister 'generations' have been able to establish themselves after all and to what extent they partake in Canadian society. The comparison is instructive for migration and refugee studies altogether: The war resisters in the sample, unlike many other migrant populations, did not have to contend with language and cultural barriers in their destination country, given similarities between the United States and Canada. Sarah J. Grünendahl's research thus allows for an analysis of the effects of residency on migrants' adaptation and participation in the receiving society, isolated from these two common barriers. Further, the study sheds light on how refugees and non-citizens can employ civic engagement to claim a place for themselves and overcome societal exclusion. About the author Sarah J. Grünendahl is research assistant at the Faculty of Social Sciences and Cultural Studies at the University of Applied Sciences Düsseldorf and earned her doctorate in Political Science at the University of Siegen. Her research interests include migration and refugee studies, the effects of legal status on migrants' incorporation, and the nexus between societal participation, place (attachment) and identity.

    Abstract: History teaches us important lessons, provided we can discern its patterns. Multi-Polar Capitalism applies this insight to the crucial, yet often underappreciated issue of international monetary relations. When international monetary systems get first put into place successfully, such as the “classic” gold standard in 1879, Bretton Woods in 1945, or the dollar standard in 1982, they structure relations between the system’s centre and the rest of the world so that others can catch up to the leader. But this growth-promoting constellation, a vector for accelerating globalization, runs its course eventually amidst mounting overproduction conditions in key sectors and spreading financial instability. Such periods of global crisis, from the Great Depression of the 1930s to stagflation in the 1970s and creeping deflation during much of the 2010s, force restructuring and policy reforms until conditions are ripe for a renewed phase of sustained expansion. We are facing such a turning point now. As we are moving from a US-dominated world economy towards a multi-polar configuration, we will also see the longstanding dollar standard give way to a multi-currency system. Three currency blocs rooted in the dollar, euro, and yuan will be dominated respectively by the United States, the European Union, and China, each a power centre representing a distinct variant of capitalism. Their complex mix of competition and cooperation necessitates new “rules of the game” promoting the shared pursuit of global public goods, in particular the impending zero-carbon transition, lest we allow fragmentation and conflict shape this next chapter of our history. Multi-Polar Capitalism adds to a century of research and debate on long waves, those roughly half-century cycles first identified by the great Soviet economist Nikolai Kondratiev in the early 1920s, by highlighting the role of the international monetary system in this distinct boom-and-bust pattern. Robert Guttmann is Professor of Economics at Hofstra University, USA, and he is also affiliated with the Centre d’Économie Paris Nord (CEPN) of the Université Paris XIII in France. He studied in Vienna and at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, USA, before obtaining his PhD at the University of Greenwich, UK. He won “Distinguished Teacher of the Year” awards at Hofstra in 1989, 2004, and 2012. Professor Guttmann teaches international economics, monetary economics, financial regulation, and economic integration in the European Union. An expert in money and banking, international finance, and monetary theory, he has published numerous books and journal articles, including his best-selling books How Credit-Money Shapes the Economy (1994), Cybercash (2003), Finance-Led Capitalism (2016) and Eco-Capitalism (2018).

    Abstract: In recent decades, new endogenous growth theory has become popular but the ideas are not new. They go back at least as far as Adam Smith, and the subsequent contributions made notably by Alfred Marshall and Allyn Young. This book critically discusses and provides an historical perspective to the entire spectrum of endogenous growth theories starting with Adam Smith and ending with Paul Romer. It fills an important gap in the literature. While contributions of individual authors are readily available, there is no comprehensive study on the subject covering such a vast ground, critically discussing these authors in a comprehensive framework. Ramesh Chandra received his PhD in Economics from the University of Strathclyde, UK, and studied economics at the Delhi School of Economics, University of California (Berkeley) and University of Glasgow. He has held professorships at Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration and Indian Council of Research on International Economic Relations, India, among others.     Abstract: This is the third corrected and extended edition of a book on deterministic and stochastic Growth Theory and the computational methods needed to produce numerical solutions. Exogenous and endogenous growth, non-monetary and monetary models are thoroughly reviewed. Special attention is paid to the use of these models for fiscal and monetary policy analysis. Models under modern theories of the Business Cycle, New Keynesian Macroeconomics, and Dynamic Stochastic General Equilibrium models, can be all considered as special cases of economic growth models, and they can be analyzed by the theoretical and numerical procedures provided in the textbook. Analytical discussions are presented in full detail. The book is self-contained and it is designed so that the student advances in the theoretical and the computational issues in parallel. Spreadsheets are used to solve simple examples. Matlab files are provided on an accompanying website to illustrate theoretical results from all chapters as well as to simulate the effects of economic policy interventions. The logical structure of these program files is described in "Numerical exercise"-type of sections, where the output of these programs is also interpreted. The third edition corrects a few typographical errors, includes two new and original chapters on frequentist and Bayesian estimation, and improves some notation.
