    Abstract: Finnish Lapland is a historical borderland of Finnish and Sámi cultures. Such a region offers various social-political identifications for people to choose: people may see it possible to identify as Finnish, Laplanders, Lappish or Sámi, for instance. However, the choices have social and political limits, and some identifications are more contested than others. The book examines the processes of identifications in the middle parts of Lapland, just south of the region defined as Sámi homeland in Finland. While the study reveals differences and nuances in people's thinking, it also shows that there is a recognizable sense of shared cultural specifity around the region. Lapland is conceptualized as an extraordinary place with unusual nature and history, characterized by particular livelihoods (such as reindeer herding) and lively cultural interaction. The book concludes that while Lapland is extraordinary as a historical dwelling region of indigenous Sámi, it may be politically significant to recognize it as a unique borderland of cultures with features of its own

    Abstract: The research reported in this publication concerns the second sub-study of the project Administrative Power and the Effect of Professionalisation Incentives in Secondary Education. This sub-study focuses on the various incentives that the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science and organisations affiliated with OCW (for instance NRO, the Inspectorate and DUO, VO-raad, the Education Council and collective agreements) give to various actor groups in education. The aim is to maintain and improve the professional competencies of those actor groups. Incentives' is another word for professionalisation policy instruments (PBIs) and these can be categorised as PBIs arising from legislation or regulations, PBIs of a financial nature and PBIs intended to entice professionalisation activities through communication. For each PBI aimed at secondary education, the actor(s) targeted and the nature of the incentive were identified. For comparison with secondary education, this has also been done for PBIs in PO and MBO. To gain more insight into the familiarity, use, effectiveness and possible side effects, experts were interviewed and asked to fill in a digital questionnaire. Finally, a focus group meeting was held to discuss our findings in more detail on the basis of various propositions
    Abstract: Het onderzoek brengt de stand van zaken met betrekking tot bestuurlijk vermogen en professionalisering in het voortgezet onderwijs in kaart. We doen dat door verschillende opeenvolgende deelstudies. We gaan door secundaire analyses na in hoeverre besturen voor voortgezet onderwijs van elkaar verschillen in gerealiseerde onderwijskwaliteit. Door literatuurstudie en interviews met deskundigen schetsen we vervolgens welke professionaliseringprikkels in het voortgezet onderwijs voorkomen en waar ze toe leiden. De kern van ons onderzoek bestaat uit een combinatie van een surveyonderzoek met (verkennende en verdiepende) casestudies. We onderzoeken in hoeverre besturen beschikken over bestuurlijk vermogen, hoe ze reageren op externe professionaliseringsprikkels en hoe ze interne professionalisering vormgeven. We analyseren de relaties tussen bestuurlijk vermogen, professionalisering en onderwijskwaliteit en gaan de invloed na van bestuurlijke kenmerken. This chapter indicates how invisible data processes pose a threat to the health and safety of the global public and argues for the democratic potential of data practices. This potential is set to become even more influential due to the central role data plays for training contemporary AI and technologies such as machine learning. Our case study explores the role patient datasets have for machine learning research in healthcare and shows that publicly available datasets are central to advancing data analysis research; they can act as a counterbalance to datasets full of absences, biases, and disconnects that often corrupt the quality of data. Given this, we argue for the introduction of 'data solidarity' as a principle of data governance and an effective critical data practice that focuses on the democratic (instead of economic) potential of data; a potential that is far too often overlooked

Considerando la temática de estudio y las implicaciones vivenciales del fenómeno se asumieron los procedimientos del paradigma postpositivista con enfoque cualitativo fenomenológico. Para el análisis de la información en primera instancia se hizo una reducción de ésta, extrayendo los significados que permitieran llegar a nueva categoría, construyendo después una ruta interpretativa de las categorías, finalmente cada nueva categoría fue triangulada desde tres fundamentos: el empírico, el teórico y el descriptivo. Los hallazgos demostraron la necesidad de implementar un modelo pedagógico enfocado en el estudiante como ser humano en todas sus dimensiones, donde las prácticas pedagógicas se centren en sus necesidades cognitivas, afectivas, emocionales y hasta económicas, de manera que se sienta atendido y se desarrolle de forma integral

Como parte del diseño metodológico, se desarrolló un proceso documental a través de la revisión de literatura disponible acerca de la educación inclusiva, la formación docente y el proceso de enseñanza-aprendizaje en alumnos con NEAE, en fuentes de información impresa y digital. En cuanto al trabajo de campo, mediante un enfoque cuantitativo de investigación, se diseñó un cuestionario para un universo poblacional de 67 docentes, un muestreo de tipo probabilístico simple, con un margen de error del 10% y un nivel de confianza del 90%, cuyas respuestas fueron procesadas en SPSS. Entre los hallazgos se destaca que el 52.9 % de los maestros consideran que los alumnos con NEAE deben prepararse en una institución especial de acuerdo con su condición. No obstante, dicho rechazo hacia ellos deriva de la frustración e incomodidad por no sentirse preparados para atenderlos apropiadamente

It is the case of Social Streets, groups of previously unconnected neighbours, who get to know each other through Facebook and become active by promoting conviviality in the neighbourhood. This book reconstructs trough sociological lenses, the spread of the Social Street phenomenon in the three cities with the largest number of these experiences. It investigates why the spread is not homogeneous within cities. It analyses opinions and feelings of activists, understanding if and how this phenomenon produces effects on those who participate and on neighbourhoods that host them. It explores forms of mobilisation that Social Street promote for the care and sociability of their streets and neighbourhoods and how this phenomenon detaches from more traditional associative realities. Particular attention is given to the comparative approach, to understand differences between those who participate in Social Streets and those who do not, showing how urban conviviality is possible, but facilitated by some factors and hindered by others

    Abstract: This book explores how festivals and events affect urban places and public spaces, with a particular focus on their role in fostering inclusion. The 'festivalisation' of culture, politics and space in cities is often regarded as problematic, but this book examines the positive and negative ways that festivals affect cities by examining festive spaces as contested spaces. The book focuses on Western European cities, a particularly interesting context given the social and cultural pressures associated with high levels of in-migration and concerns over the commercialisation and privatisation of public spaces. The key themes of this book are the quest for more inclusive urban spaces and the contested geographies of festival spaces and places. Festivals are often used by municipal authorities to break down symbolic barriers that restrict who uses public spaces and what those spaces are used for. However, the rise of commercial festivals and ticketed events means that they are also responsible for imposing physical and financial obstacles that reduce the accessibility of city parks, streets and squares. Alongside addressing the contested effects of urban festivals on the character and inclusivity of public spaces, the book addresses more general themes including the role of festivals in culture-led regeneration. Several chapters analyse festivals and events as economic development tools, and the book also covers contested representations of festival cities and the ways related images and stories are used in place marketing. A range of cases from Western Europe are used to explore these issues, including chapters on some of the world's most significant and contested festival cities: Venice, Edinburgh, London and Barcelona. The book covers a wide range of festivals, including those dedicated to music and the arts, but also events celebrating particular histories, identities and pastimes. A series of fascinating cases are discussed - from the Venice Biennale and Dublin Festival of History, to Rotterdam's music festivals and craft beer festivals in Manchester.     Abstract: The most recent scientific literature on the treatment of social problems or controversial social questions in the Social Sciences classroom, and their inclusion into curricula, emphasizes the need to introduce students into large-scale social debates where different points of view exist, different interests are at stake, and where it is desirable that they construct their own opinions in that respect from a critical and reasoned perspective. Work with social problems permits a typology of analysis that includes the relative experience of the past and the expectations for the future in a present that is lived, and to consider the temporal relation on the basis of an analysis of changes and continuities that are observable from a comparative perspective. In the comprehension and interpretation of the historicity of the present and in planning the social future, social problems would have to represent a fundamental curricular tenant that gives relevance to the contemporaneousness of the student. In view of the scarcity of studies in this area, this monograph offers a rich collection of studies aimed at answering two structural research questions: What are the purposes of teaching history and social sciences at today’s schools? What is the place of social thought formation and social problems in learning/teaching in Social Sciences?

    Abstract: This chapter explores the role digital skills, interest in technology, and social support have in home care workers' use of digital applications at work. The empirical research is based on the 2019 University of Jyväskylä survey study on eldercare work (N = 6,903), drawn from the members of four majors trade unions in Finland. In this chapter, a sub-sample of home care workers (n = 1,398) is used in the analyses. Structural equation models are used to estimate the direct and indirect effects of available technology support, digital skills, and interest in technology on the actual use of various digital applications at work. According to the results, technology support has no direct effect on the use of digital applications. However, technology support seems to increase interest in technology and improve digital skills, which in turn promotes the use of digital applications. The availability of technology support appears as a crucial facilitator for home care workers' digital agency at work

Die Ergebnisse belegen die Komplexität von Lernprozessen und zeigen die Schwierigkeit, individuelle Kompetenzzuwächse auf bestimmte Prozesse zurückzuführen. Zum Beispiel konnten hohe Kompetenzzuwächse sowohl für Lernende mit häufigen fachmethodischen Beiträgen als auch für solche mit nur geringen fachmethodischen Aktivitäten festgestellt werden. Des Weiteren gehen experimentell angemessene Aktivitäten in erkennbaren Anteilen mit fachmethodisch unpassenden Vorstellungen einher, wie z.,B. bei einer korrekt vorgenommenen, aber falsch begründeten Trennung zwischen einer Beobachtung und einer Deutung. Die Arbeit liefert damit Hinweise, dass Lernende neben fachinhaltlichen auch fachmethodische Vorstellungen in den Unterricht mitbringen.     Abstract: The story of this book began at a meeting we held at the beginning of the summer (June 9) in 2014. At the meeting, we discussed how to popularize volunteerism at Istanbul University. We talked about the various practices we would be able to bring to life, but emphasized that, whatever we did, the practices needed to be research-based. Thus emerged the research on Istanbul University students' perceptions, tendencies, and experiences of volunteerism. During the process, we added various components to this research, which then turned into the book Üniversitede Gönüllü Olmak [Volunteering in Universities]. Based on this research, the Gönüllü Akademisi [Volunteer Academy] (a 10-week program consisting of activities such as seminars, workshops, film readings, and NGO visits) and the Gönüllü Ol İstanbul Platformu [Volunteer Istanbul Platform] (a platform aimed at established Istanbul University students for getting NGOs, projects, and campaigns seeking volunteers to meet and match up with those wanting to volunteer) were brought to life with the aim of increasing students' awareness on volunteerism. Of course, all the research and practices progressed through our student friends and all our volunteer work. From the very start, we endeavored to take care not to lose the nature of the studies done on volunteerism; we certainly don't know how well we succeeded. More than 1,000 students participated in both the Volunteer Academy and the volunteer activities we organized. In addition, the Civil Society and Volunteerism course became a new course within the Department of Sociology as well as an important elective course in which students showed interest. This was followed by the NGO and Social Responsibility Management non-thesis master's program that opened up within the Department of Sociology. This program is based on lectures given by experienced leading names in the NGO field. We are currently maintaining it as a program in which professionals who work in the sector, those who want to work in the NGO field, and volunteers participate. We've also organized panels and workshops on volunteering, NGOs, and relevant topics. We last conducted the Türkiye Gönüllük Araştırması [Research on Volunteerism in Turkiye] for the Ministry of Youth and Sports. In this context, we as Istanbul University continue to carry out studies in the field of volunteering and NGOs, popularize volunteering among students, and share knowledge and experience as well as develop relations and cooperation in the NGO field. One of the steps in preparing this book was the Volunteering in Universities Course Curriculum Workshop we organized at Istanbul University on April 18, 2018. People such as academicians, NGO professionals, volunteers, and student club representatives attended this workshop, in which we discussed the volunteerism curriculum in universities from a participatory perspective. The ideas the participants had at this workshop have played an important role in shaping the work at hand. The workshop report has been prepared, however, we are unable to publish it. We planned the next steps regarding the idea of elective courses in universities and the materials to be prepared for these courses. With the decision the Council of Higher Education made to establish the Volunteer Studies course as an elective in universities in April 2020, however, we returned to this work we had been unable to carry out at that time due to various agendas and accelerated our book studies. The process has taken a little longer due to the attention we gave to the inclusive and comprehensive nature of this work and our desire to address various topics, but it has finally been completed and here we are. Volunteerism and Working with Volunteers has the aim of presenting readers with many of the contexts and concepts related to volunteering by addressing volunteerism through its various dimensions in our day. Because each chapter is clear on its own, the book takes into account the dimensions that make volunteerism unique. This book claims that relating to the historical and social contexts of volunteerism is possible these days only if volunteerism is addressed in all its dimensions
