Abstract: This important book assembles formative articles that demonstrate how business history emerged as a discipline from the interwar years until the present day. The essays, drawn from authors in the United States, Europe, Asia and Latin America, document the remarkable intellectual achievements of the field, as well as exploring the challenges it faced securing a wider impact on other disciplines. The book will appeal to both social scientists and historians interested to learn how the field of business history was shaped

Abstract: In the cultural and social formations of the past, practices exist for the generation and integration of moments having and giving sense with the objective of strengthening the cultural and social cohesion. Such practices and processes have a constructive character, even if this is not always the intention of the actors themselves. As the production of sense is one of the central fields of action of cultural and political practice, the articles examine with an interdisciplinary perspective how, in different contexts, the construction of sense was organized and implemented as a cultural practice

Abstract: The Politics of Security tells the story of how people experienced the cold war as a war. It is about the impact of the cold war on political cultures. This crucial issue is often forgotten in historical memory. In particular, the book follows British and West German anti-nuclear-weapons activists in their attempts to campaign for and create security after the destruction of the Second World War, and how their own version of security clashed with concepts advanced by their own governments. But the book also demonstrates how, as part of the protests against nuclear weapons, activists and their societies learned to live with the Bomb: it recounts how activists first discovered the dangers of nuclear weapons, but how a different generation of activists came to focus on other issues as the Vietnam War became their primary concern. And it makes comprehensible how activists in two societies who had fought each other fiercely in the battle of dictatorships and democracies of the Second World War could now come to see each other as part of a common campaign. Fundamentally, with its transnational approach, the book highlights how these two societies drew on very similar arguments when they came to understand the cold war through the prism of the previous world war. The book is the first to capture in a transnational fashion what activists did on the marches and what it meant to them and to others. The book thus reminds us that threats are not merely out there, but that they need to be created in a political process that involves struggles for power and contestation.

Abstract: This fascinating volume explores the roles played by entrepreneurship and multinational enterprises in the development of the modern world. Geoffrey Jones demonstrates how multinational corporations have driven globalization through the transfer of innovation and cultural values. -- ‘Harvard Business School Professor Geoffrey Jones has long been a student of the history of multinational enterprise. He has taken a leadership role in the field. This volume reflects the extraordinary breadth of his historical research, spanning continents and industries. His focus is on the firm as an actor on the stage of the history of globalization. This book contains a selection of his unpublished and published articles. Of special interest is his updated previously unpublished 2006 talk that explores how firms and entrepreneurs fit into the scholarly debates on the Great Divergence between the West and the Rest. This is a splendid collection.’ (Mira Wilkins, Florida International University, US)

Abstract: Headline: An interdisciplinary, edited collection on social science methodologies for approaching Roman legal sources. Blurb: Roman law as a field of study is rapidly evolving to reflect new perspectives and approaches in research. Scholars who work on the subject are increasingly being asked to conduct research in an interdisciplinary manner whereby Roman law is not merely seen as a set of abstract concepts devoid of any background, but as a body of law which operated in a specific social, economic and cultural context. This ""context-based"" approach to the study of Roman law is an exciting

Abstract: There are numerous popular myths concerning Hispanic America in German and Austrian textbooks from the first decade of the 21st century, and thus there is a big gap between historical narratives in textbooks and the scientific historical discourse. An analysis of textbooks from four centuries shows, that some of the myths were introduced into the textbooks in the twentieth century – for example the “myth of the flat earth” of medieval times. The myths relating to Hispanic America and the images and assumptions they conveyed were important to many different groups throughout history, became incorporated into collective memory and were uncritically incorporated into German and Austrian textbooks

Abstract: This tenth volume appearing within the framework of the OEAW interdisciplinary research- project Fontes epigraphici religionum Celticarum antiquarum increases our understanding of several aspects of the religious traditions handed down by Celtic-speaking populations, from Britain and the Iberian Peninsula to ancient Italy and Dacia, all through the Gauls and the Germaniae. This tenth volume appearing within the framework of the OEAW interdisciplinary research- project Fontes epigraphici religionum Celticarum antiquarum increases our understanding of several aspects of the religious traditions handed down by Celtic-speaking populations, from Britain and the Iberian Peninsula to ancient Italy and Dacia, all through the Gauls and the Germaniae. G. Bauchhenss corrects some preconceived notions about iconography; F. Burillo Mozota, J. A. Arenas Esteban and M. P. Burillo Cuadrado investigate the cultural context of an astronomic platform at Segeda; P. Scherrer puts the nautae Parisiaci pillar on a new hermeneutical basis; N. Gavrilović looks for Celtic speakers in Eastern Europe. J. Gorrochategui, M. C. González Rodríguez, P. Lajoye offer partly revised readings of several votive inscriptions and divine names while P. Y. Lambert, B. Rémy, X. Delamarre analyse theonymical epithets in different ways and N. Beck scrutinizes the relationship between deities and ethnics. P. de Bernardo Stempel discusses the transformations to be observed in a provincial pantheon from the first Celtic inscriptions to the latest Roman ones; W. Spickermann questions the continuity between Pre-Roman and Romano-Celtic religion; A. Hofeneder follows the trail of an Old Celtic and later syncretic deity up to the Imperial Roman historical tradition. M. Hainzmann and P. de Bernardo Stempel present – with the help of numerous and easy understandable tables – an innovative systematization of the various syncretic phenomena known as Interpretatio, whose geographic diversity is pointed out by F. Marco Simón

Abstract: Until today, the death of Charles VI and Maria Theresia’s ascending the throne 1740 is seen as a major turning point in Austrian history. But now is the question of whether in different “layers” and “rooms” without doubt fundamental change between 1720 and 1780 not differentiated must be seen against the background of the concept of interface (“Sattelzeit”/Reinhart Koselleck). On the basis of the space “Viennese court”, where the change of rulers in its effects most likely can be documented, attempts from the perspective of different disciplines (the so called “Hofkünste” – literature/poetry, arts, theatre/dance, music) point out continuities and discontinuities

Abstract: Annotation, Between 1989 and 2012 the settlement mound known as Tell Abu al-Kharaz in the central Jordan Valley to the east of the river Jordan was explored under the direction of the author of this volume. The city experienced its heyday in the Early Bronze Age and - following a lengthy gap in settlement - in the Late Middle Bronze and the Late Bronze Age. Concluding a series of three volumes on Tell Abu al-Kharaz, this study constitutes the first complete report about an Iron Age settlement in the Jordan Valley (after Volume I: Early Bronze Age, 2008 and Volume II: Middle and Late Bronze Age, 2006)

Abstract: In these conference proceedings particular attention is paid to the performance of burials and burial rites between 1300 and 750 BC. A change in burial customs took place in large parts of central Europe during the 13th century BC. The dead were no longer buried in inhumation graves - as was customary until then - but were burned and laid to rest in urns. This transformation of burial customs is probably connected to far reaching changes in society and religious beliefs

Abstract: This book explores the effect of the symbolic and mythical representations of the Russian imperial government on law, administrative practice, and concepts of national and imperial identities throughout centuries of monarchical rule. Richard Wortman demonstrates how the ideologies behind such representations shaped the thought patterns not only of the Tsar and the imperial family but also of the Russian political and social elite. He characterizes the monarchy as an active agent in Russia's political experience, one whose dominant role was resisting change until the inevitable collapse facing all absolute monarchies.

Abstract: "Although historic sources provide information on recent centuries, archaeology can contribute longer term understandings of pre-industrial marine exploitation in the Indo-Pacific region, providing valuable baseline data for evaluating contemporary ecological trends. This volume contains eleven papers which constitute a diverse but coherent collection on past and present marine resource use in the Indo-Pacific region, within a human-ecological perspective. The geographical focus extends from Eastern Asia, mainly Japan and Insular Southeast Asia (especially the Philippines) to the tropical Pacific (Micronesia, Melanesia, and Polynesia) and outlying sites in coastal Tanzania (Indian Ocean) and coastal California (North Pacific). The volume is divided thematically and temporally into four parts: Part 1, Prehistoric and historic marine resource use in the Indo-Pacific Region; Part 2, Specific marine resource use in the Pacific and Asia; Part 3, Marine use and material culture in the Western Pacific; and Part 4, Modern marine use and resource management"--Publisher's website.

Abstract: This book explores the phenomenon of the Third Reich from a philosophical perspective. It concentrates on the ways in which the subjects and experiences of Nazi Germany, the Holocaust and Anti-Semitism are conceived by eight German thinkers from the Continental tradition. These eight intellectuals include Martin Heidegger, Hannah Arendt, Karl Löwith, Carl Schmitt, Ernst Jünger, Jean Améry, Hans-Georg Gadamer, and Jan Assmann. Based on careful philosophical examinations of both known and unknown texts of these eight thinkers (including an English translation of two forgotten texts by Schmitt and Jünger), this study exposes and then explores the tension between ideology and philosophy, between submission to authority and genuine critical thinking, all of which constitute the essence of the Continental philosophical tradition. Abstract: In Russian Idea--Jewish Presence, Professor Brian Horowitz follows the career paths of Jewish intellectuals, who, having fallen in love with Russian culture, were unceremoniously repulsed by outsiders. Horowitz relays the paradoxes of a synthetic Jewish and Russian self-consciousness in order to correct critics who have always considered Russians and Jews to be polar opposites and even enemies. In fact, the best Russian Jewish intellectuals--Semyon Dubnov, Maxim Vinaver, Mikhail Gershenzon, and a number of Zionist writers and thinkers--were actually inspired by Russian culture and attempted to develop a sui generis Jewish creativity in three languages on Russian soil.

Abstract: This is the concluding volume of the Archaeology of Fazzān series, bringing to press the combined results of two Anglo-Libyan projects in southern Libya: the pioneering work of Charles Daniels between 1958 and 1977 and the Fazzān Project directed by David Mattingly between 1997 and 2001. The investigations carried out by these two projects allow an entirely new reconstruction and understanding of the historic desert societies of the Libyan Sahara. In particular, the work has shed light on the ancient people known to Greco-Roman writers as the Garamantes, who are now revealed to have been a sophisticated state, with permanent towns and villages and an economy based on oasis agriculture and Saharan trade. This volume presents the results of excavations and survey work at the site of Old Jarma, identifiable with the Garamantian capital, Garama, that also had a long after-life in Medieval and Early Modern times. The Fazzān Project revealed an extraordinary urban story, spanning 10 major construction phases that extended from c.400 BC to the AD 1930s. The detailed publication of the complex stratigraphic evidence and the accompanying finds assemblages opens a fascinating window on the cultural heritage and lifeways of a central Saharan oasis

Abstract: One of the biggest debates in economic history deals with the Great Divergence. How can we explain that at a certain moment in time (the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries) a certain part of the world (the West) escaped from general poverty and became much richer than it had ever been before and than the rest of the world? Many prominent scholars discussed this question and came up with many different answers. This book provides a systematic analysis of the most important of those answers by means of an analysis of possible explanations in terms of natural resources, labour, capital, the division of labour and market exchange, accumulation and innovation, and as potential underlying determining factors institutions and culture. The author juxtaposes the views of economists / social scientists and of global historians and systematically compares Great Britain and China to illustrate his position

Abstract: "The first sustained study of girls and girlhood in early modern literature and culture Jennifer Higginbotham makes a persuasive case for a paradigm shift in our current conceptions of the early modern sex-gender system. She challenges the widespread assumption that the category of the 'girl' played little or no role in the construction of gender in early modern English culture. And she demonstrates that girl characters appeared in a variety of texts, from female infants in Shakespeare's late romances to little children in Tudor interludes to adult 'roaring girls' in city comedies. This monograph provides the first book-length study of the way the literature and drama of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries constructed the category of the 'girl'."--Publisher's website

Abstract: This collection brings together new and original critical essays by eleven established European American Studies scholars to explore the 1960s from a transatlantic perspective. Intended for an academic audience interested in globalized American studies, it examines topics ranging from the impact of the American civil rights movement in Germany, France and Wales, through the transatlantic dimensions of feminism and the counterculture movement. It explores, for example, the vicissitudes of Europe's status in US foreign relations, European documentaries about the Vietnam War, transatlantic trends in literature and culture, and the significance of collective and cultural memory of the era

Abstract: Due to decades of systematic work in aerial archaeology a preliminary master plan of the ancient remains of Roman Carnuntum, that remain hidden beneath the ground, could be made. This plan shows archaeological structures that extend over several square kilometers of the densely built-up area, which include the canabae and features related to the water supply. When viewed together with the published research of older excavations, a reassessment of the previous state of research was carried out and a model of the canabae was developed

Abstract: In the past quarter century we have moved from the Cold War to the Post-Cold War era in Austria, Europe and the world at large. Yet relatively little assessment is available what the change from the Cold War to the Post-Cold War era signaled for Austria’s position in the world. Austrian foreign policy went through sea changes. The country lost its exposed Cold War geopolitical location on the margins of Western Europe along the iron curtain. With the removal of the iron curtain Austria moved back into its central location in Europe and rebuilt her long-standing traditional relations with neighbors to the East and South. Austria joined the European Union in 1995 and thus further “Westernized.” Its policy of neutrality — so central to its foreign policy during the Cold War — largely eroded during the past quarter century, even though pro forma and for reasons of identity, the country holds on to its neutral position. Austrian failed to join NATO and gained the reputation of a “security free rider.

Abstract: This book examines the exercise of power in the Stalinist music world as well as the ways in which composers and ordinary people responded to it. It presents a comparative inquiry into the relationship between music and politics in the German Democratic Republic and Poland from the aftermath of World War II through Stalin's death in 1953, concluding with the slow process of de-Stalinization in the mid-to late-1950s. The author explores how the Communist parties in both countries expressed their attitudes to music of all kinds, and how composers, performers, and audiences cooperated with, resisted, and negotiated these suggestions and demands. Based on a deep analysis of the archival and contemporary published sources on state, party, and professional organizations concerned with musical life, Tompkins argues that music, as a significant part of cultural production in these countries, played a key role in instituting and maintaining the regimes of East Central Europe. As part of the Stalinist project to create and control a new socialist identity at the personal as well as collective level, the ruling parties in East Germany and Poland sought to saturate public space through the production of music. Politically effective ideas and symbols were introduced that furthered their attempts to, in the parlance of the day, "engineer the human soul." Music also helped the Communist parties establish legitimacy. Extensive state support for musical life encouraged musical elites and audiences to accept the dominant position and political missions of these regimes. Party leaders invested considerable resources in the attempt to create an authorized musical language that would secure and maintain hegemony over the cultural and wider social worlds. The responses of composers and audiences ran the gamut from enthusiasm to suspicion, but indifference was not an option

Abstract: Known for much of the nineteenth century as "the ever-faithful isle," Cuba did not earn its independence from Spain until 1898, long after most American colonies had achieved emancipation from European rule. In this groundbreaking history, David Sartorius explores the relationship between political allegiance and race in nineteenth-century Cuba. Challenging assumptions that loyalty to the Spanish empire was the exclusive province of the white Cuban elite, he examines the free and enslaved people of African descent who actively supported colonialism. By claiming loyalty, many black and mulatto Cubans attained some degree of social mobility, legal freedom, and political inclusion in a world where hierarchy and inequality were the fundamental lineaments of colonial subjectivity. Sartorius explores Cuba's battlefields, plantations, and meeting halls to consider the goals and limits of loyalty. In the process, he makes a bold call for fresh perspectives on imperial ideologies of race and on the rich political history of the African diaspora
Abstract: Introduction : A faithful account of colonial racial politics -- Belonging to an empire : race and rights -- Suspicious affinities : loyal subjectivity and the paternalist public -- The will to freedom : Spanish allegiances in the Ten Years' War -- Publicizing loyalty : race and the post-Zanjón public sphere -- "Long live Spain! death to autonomy!" Liberalism and slave emancipation -- The price of integrity : limited loyalties in revolution -- Conclusion : Subject citizens and the tragedy of loyalty

It focuses on the history of the continent in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, although also looks back to the era of the Atlantic slave trade. Its aim is to consider the evolution of the field and to set out where, after fifty years of sustained research, it has arrived. To do so, each of its twenty-six chapters explores a particular theme, organized in five sections: Key Themes in African History; The Colonial Encounter; Religion and Belief; Society and Economy; and Arts and the Media.

Abstract: This book maps out what we now firmly know-and what we are just beginning to know - after four decades of scholarship on women and gender in medieval Europe. Medieval gender rules seem both foreign and familiar today. Medieval people understood religion, law, love, marriage, and sexual identity in distinctive ways that compel us today to understand women and gender as changeable, malleable, and unyoked from constraints of nature or biology. Yet some medieval views are echoed in modern traditions, and those echoes tease out critical tensions of continuity and change in gender relations.

Abstract: When the war was over in 1945, Germany was a country with no government, little functioning infrastructure, millions of refugees and homeless people, and huge foreign armies living largely off the land. Large parts of the country were covered in rubble, with no clean drinking water, electricity, or gas. Hospitals overflowed with patients, but were short of beds, medicines, and medical personnel. In these conditions, the potential for epidemics and public health disasters was severe. This is a study of how the four occupiers—Britain, France, the Soviet Union, and the United States—attempted to keep their own troops and the ex-enemy population alive. While the war was still being fought, German public health was a secondary consideration for them, an unaffordable and undeserved luxury. But once fighting ceased and the occupation began, it rapidly turned into a urgent priority. Public health was now recognized as an indispensable component of creating order, keeping the population governable, and facilitating the reconstruction of German society. But they faced a number of insoluble problems in the process: Which Germans could be trusted to work with the occupiers, and how were they to be identified? Who could be tolerated because of a lack of alternatives? How, if at all, could former Nazis be reformed and reintegrated into German society? What was the purpose of the occupation anyway? This is the first carefully researched comparison of the four occupation zones which looks at the occupation through the prism of public health, an essential service fundamentally shaped by political and economic criteria, and which in turn was to determine the success or failure of the occupation

Mit Beiträgen von Karima Aziz, Gerd Brendel, Ernst Bruckmüller, Christian Danz, Nicolae Dura, Chaim Eisenberg, Zeynep Elibol, Stamatios Gerogiorgakis, Farid Hafez, Raoul Kneucker, Gabriele Kohlbauer-Fritz, Rüdiger Lohlker, Jürgen Nautz, Kurt Salamun, Roman A. Abstract: "The publications of the interdisciplinary and internationally networked Research Platform “World Order – Religion – Violence” seek to improve our understanding of the relationship between religion, politics and violence. It therefore deals especially with the return of religious themes and symbols into politics, with the analysis of the link between political theory and religion, and finally with the critical discussion of the secularization thesis. At the centre of the research are questions concerning the causes of violent conflict, the possibilities for a just world order and the conditions for peaceful coexistence on a local, regional, national and international/worldwide scale between communities in the face of divergent religious and ideological convictions. Its task is to initiate and coordinate thematically related research-efforts from various disciplinary backgrounds at the University of Innsbruck. It creates a network between departments, research-teams and single researchers working on topics of religion, politics and violence. The overall aim of the research platform World Order-Religion-Violence is to promote excellence in social and human science research on religion and politics at the University of Innsbruck and to guarantee the diffusion of this particular competence on a national and international level

Abstract: Over a 1000 tiny bronze artefacts were found alongside the remains of a man in a Dutch barrow that was excavated in laboratory conditions. The objects had been dismantled and taken apart, all to be destroyed by fire in what appears to have been a pars pro toto burial. In essence, a person and a place were being transformed through destruction. Based on the meticulous excavation and a range of specialist and comprehensive studies of finds, a prehistoric burial ritual now can be brought to life in surprising detail. This Iron Age community used extraordinary objects that find their closest counterpart in the elite graves of the Hallstatt culture in Central Europe

Abstract: The 1992 publication of Pottery Function brought together the ethnographic study of the Kalinga, and developed a method and theory for how pottery was actually used. Since then, there have been considerable advances in understanding how pottery was actually used, particularly in the area of residue analysis, abrasion, and sooting/carbonization. At the 20th anniversary of the book, it is time to assess what has been done and learned. One of the concerns of those working in pottery analysis is that they are unsure how to "do use-alteration analysis on their collection. Another common concern is understanding intended pottery functionthe connections between technical choices and function. This book is designed to answer these questions using case studies from the author and his colleagues for applying use-alteration analysis to infer actual pottery function. The focus of Understanding Pottery Function is on how practicing archaeologists can infer function from their ceramic collection.

Abstract: Major international historical archives of declassified military reconnaissance photographs and satellite images, combined with a range of national collections of vertical photographs, offer considerable potential for archaeological and historical landscape research. They provide a unique insight into the character of the landscape as it was over half a century or more ago, before the destructive impact of intensive land use and development. Millions of such images are held in archives around the world, yet their research potential goes largely untapped.Archaeology from Historical Aerial and Satellite Archives draws attention to the existence and scope of these historical photographs to encourage their use in archaeological and landscape research. Not only do they provide a high-quality photographic record of the pre-modern landscape, but they also offer the prospect of the better survival of archaeological remains surviving as earthworks or cropmarks. These sources of imagery also provide an opportunity to examine areas of Europe and beyond whose skies are still not open to archaeological aerial reconnaissance.Featured in the coverage:The archaeological potential of The Aerial Reconnaissance Archives in Edinburgh and the archive of declassified intelligence satellite photographs of the United States Geological Survey.First World War aerial photography and medieval landscapes.Second World War and post-war aerial photography in multi-period archaeological research in Britain, Hungary, Italy, Jordan, Portugal, Romania, Russia, Spain and Uruguay. The integration of historical aerial and satellite photography for archaeological landscape research in Cambodia and Romania.By describing this massive resource, providing examples of its application to archaeological/landscape questions, and offering advice on access, Archaeology from Historical Aerial and Satellite Archives demonstrates its huge potential and encourages its further use, stimulating a new approach to archaeological survey and the study of landscape evolution among archaeologists, historians, social scientists, preservationists, and cultural heritage specialists.First World War aerial photography and medieval landscapes.Second World War and post-war aerial photography in multi-period archaeological research in Britain, Hungary, Italy, Jordan, Portugal, Romania, Russia, Spain and Uruguay. The archaeological exploitation of declassified US satellite photography in Armenia and Syria. The integration of historical aerial and satellite photography for archaeological landscape research in Cambodia and Romania.By describing this massive resource, providing examples of its application to archaeological/landscape questions, and offering advice on access, Archaeology from Historical Aerial and Satellite Archives demonstrates its huge potential and encourages its further use, stimulating a new approach to archaeological survey and the study of landscape evolution among archaeologists, historians, social scientists, preservationists, and cultural heritage specialists.Second World War and post-war aerial photography in multi-period archaeological research in Britain, Hungary, Italy, Jordan, Portugal, Romania, Russia, Spain and Uruguay. The archaeological exploitation of declassified US satellite photography in Armenia and Syria. The integration of historical aerial and satellite photography for archaeological landscape research in Cambodia and Romania.By describing this massive resource, providing examples of its application to archaeological/landscape questions, and offering advice on access, Archaeology from Historical Aerial and Satellite Archives demonstrates its huge potential and encourages its further use, stimulating a new approach to archaeological survey and the study of landscape evolution among archaeologists, historians, social scientists, preservationists, and cultural heritage specialists.

Abstract: This volume reconstructs the body of sensibility and the discourse which constructed it. The discourse of sensibility was deployed very widely throughout the mid- to late-eighteenth century, particularly in France and Britain. To inquire into the body of sensibility is then necessarily to enter into an interdisciplinary space and so to invite the plurality of methodological approaches which this collection exemplifies. The chapters collected here draw together the histories of literature and aesthetics, metaphysics and epistemology, moral theory, medicine, and cultural history. Together, they contribute to four major themes: First, the collection reconstructs various modes by which the sympathetic subject was construed or scripted, including through the theatre, poetry, literature, and medical and philosophical treaties. It secondly draws out those techniques of affective pedagogy which were implied by the medicalisation of the knowing body, and thirdly highlights the manner in which the body of sensibility was constructed as simultaneously particular and universal. Finally, it illustrates the ‘centrifugal forces’ at play within the discourse, and the anxiety which often accompanied them. At the centre of eighteenth-century thought was a very particular object: the body of sensibility, the Enlightenment’s knowing body. The persona of the knowledge-seeker was constructed by drawing together mind and matter, thought and feeling. And so where the Enlightenment thinker is generally associated with reason, truth-telling, and social and political reform, the Enlightenment is also known for its valorisation of emotion. During the period, intellectual pursuits were envisioned as having a distinctly embodied and emotional aspect. The body of ‘sensibility’ encompassed these apparently disparate strands and was associated with terms including ‘sentimental’, ‘sentiment’, ‘sense’, ‘sensation’, and ‘sympathy’

Abstract: Developments across the millennia suggest that, even though democracies and free market economies are continuously challenged by crises and disturbances, such as natural disasters, wars, or technological revolutions, in the countries where they take roots civil liberties deepen and per capita prosperity increases. To substantiate this claim analytically, the authors emphasize the principles that make free markets a sine qua non condition for democracy and study the nature of the relationship between free market institutions and economic growth. By examining the operating principles, outcomes and challenges experienced by contemporary democracies, many lessons are drawn with regard to how governments should act in order to avoid the pitfalls inherently associated with representative democracy. To illustrate the dangers of deviating from these principles, the authors apply their findings to the Greek democracy and economy since the Second World War

Abstract: This collection of essays in Archaeologies of Mobility and Movement draws inspiration from current archaeological interest in the movement of individuals, things, and ideas in the recent past. Movement is fundamentally concerned with the relationship(s) among time, object, person, and space. The volume argues that understanding movement in the past requires a shift away from traditional, fieldwork-based archaeological ontologies towards fluid, trajectory-based studies. Archaeology, by its very nature, locates objects frozen in space (literally in their three-dimensional matrices) at sites that are often stripped of people. An archaeology of movement must break away from this stasis and cut new pathways that trace the boundary-crossing contextuality inherent in object/person mobility. Essays in this volume build on these new approaches, confronting issues of movement from a variety of perspectives. They are divided into four sections, based on how the act of moving is framed. The groups into which these chapters are placed are not meant to be unyielding or definitive. The first section, "Objects in Motion," includes case studies that follow the paths of material culture and its interactions with groups of people. The second section of this volume, "People in Motion," features chapters that explore the shifting material traces of human mobility. Chapters in the third section of this book, "Movement through Spaces," illustrate the effects that particular spaces have on the people and objects who pass through them. Finally, there is an afterward that cohesively addresses the issue of studying movement in the recent past. At the heart of Archaeologies of Mobility and Movement is a concern with the hybridity of people and things, affordances of objects and spaces, contemporary heritage issues, and the effects of movement on archaeological subjects in the recent and contemporary past

Abstract: In Scandinavian Colonialism and the Rise of Modernity: Small Time Agents in a Global Arena, archaeologists, anthropologists, and historians present case studies that focus on the scope and impact of Scandinavian colonial expansion in the North, Africa, Asia and America as well as within Scandinavia itsself. They discuss early modern thinking and theories made valid and developed in early modern Scandinavia that justified and propagated participation in colonial expansion. The volume demonstrates a broad and comprehensive spectrum of archaeological, anthropological and historical research, which engages with a variation of themes relevant for the understanding of Danish and Swedish colonial history from the early 17th century until today. The aim is to add to the on-going global debates on the context of the rise of the modern society and to revitalize the field of early modern studies in Scandinavia, where methodological nationalism still determines many archaeological and historical studies. Through their theoretical commitment, critical outlook and application of postcolonial theories the contributors to this book shed a new light on the processes of establishing and maintaining colonial rule, hybridization and creolization in the sphere of material culture, politics of resistance, and responses to the colonial claims. This volume is a fantastic resource for graduate students and researchers in historical archaeology, Scandinavia, early modern history and anthropology of colonialism

Abstract: The Neolithic period sees the transformation from hunter-gatherer societies to farming groups, practising agriculture, domestication and sedentism. This lifestyle spread gradually from the Near East into Europe, and archaeologists have long focused on observing the movements of plants, animals and people. However, the changes in domestic architecture of the time have not been examined from an explicitly comparative perspective. Tracking the Neolithic house in Europe: Sedentism, Architecture, and Practice explores the ways in which the transition to sedentism is played out in the earliest houses in the Near East and across Europe. Along with tracking sedentism, Neolithic houses also allow researchers to address changing cultural and group identity, and the varying social and cosmological significance of building. All these aspects alter considerably as one moves westwards and northwards across the European continent and as sedentism becomes more established in each region.Chapters are arranged geographically and chronologically to allow for easy comparisons between neighbouring areas. Contributors address:· Construction materials and architectural characteristics· How houses facilitated certain kinds of routine practice and dwelling· The cosmological dimensions of domestic architecture· The role of tradition and changeThree insightful discussion chapters-on the continent-wide development of Neolithic architecture over time, archaeological approaches to buildings, and anthropological perspectives-round off the volume. Tracking the Neolithic House in Europe: Sedentism, Architecture, and Practice is for archaeologists, anthropologists, and any student of the Neolithic.

Abstract: The book presents the historical evolution of gold mining activities in the Egyptian and Nubian Desert (Sudan) from about 4000 BC until the Early Islamic Period (~800-1350 AD), subdivided into the main classical epochs including the Early Dynastic - Old and Middle Kingdoms - New Kingdom (including Kushitic) - Ptolemaic - Roman and Early Islamic. It is illustrated with many informative colour images, maps and drawings. An up to date comprehensive geological introduction gives a general overview on the gold production zones in the Eastern Desert of Egypt and northern (Nubian) Sudan, including the various formation processes of the gold bearing quartz veins mined in these ancient periods. The more than 250 gold production sites presented, are described both, from their archaeological (as far as surface inventory is concerned) and geological environmental conditions, resulting in an evolution scheme of prospection and mining methods within the main periods of mining activities. The book offers for the first time a complete catalogue of the many gold production sites in Egypt and Nubia under geological and archaeological aspects. It provides information about the importance of gold for the Pharaohs and the spectacular gold rush in Early Arab times.

Abstract: The book is part of the 5-volume series “German Social Policy”, a unique multidisciplinary approach to the history of German social policy written by the doyens of their respective disciplines. The volumes expound the contribution of the German tradition to the rise of social policy in the Western world in the 19th and 20th centuries. Germany pioneered modern social policy in the 19th century when Bismarck introduced social insurance. After the Second World War, Germany’s Social Market Economy became a model of social integration. The volumes cover the history of ideas (volume 1), the legal and political history before and after 1945 (volumes 2 and 3), the German Democratic Republic (1949-1990) and the impact of German reunification (1990) (volume 4). Volume 5 embeds the German case in a major comparative study of European welfare states, complemented by a study of the USA and the Soviet Union. The volumes also yield insights into general theoretical issues of social policy beyond the empirical case of Germany. Each volume has an introduction by the editor who summarizes the contribution made by the volumes and looks into the future of German social policy. This book traces the origins of the German welfare state. The author, formerly director at the Max-Planck-Institute for European Legal History, Frankfurt, provides a perceptive overview of the history of social security and social welfare in Germany from early modern times to the end of World War II, including Bismarck’s pioneering introduction of social insurance in the 1880s. The author unravels “layers” of social security that have piled up in the course of history and, so he argues, still linger in the present-day welfare state. The account begins with the first efforts by public authorities to regulate poverty and then proceeds to the “social question” that arose during the 19th-century Industrial Revolution. World War I had a major impact on the development of social security, both during the war and after, through the exigencies of the war economy, inflation and unemployment. The ruptures as well as the continuities of social policy under National Socialism and World War II are also investigated.
