Rahel Jaeggi verteidigt in ihrem Buch das Begriffspaar Fortschritt und Regression als unverzichtbares sozialphilosophisches Werkzeug für die Kritik unserer Zeit. Als fortschrittlich oder regressiv versteht sie nicht nur das Resultat, sondern vor allem die Gestalt gesellschaftlicher Transformationen selbst. Indem sie nach den Erfahrungsblockaden fragt, die regressiven Tendenzen Vorschub leisten, entwickelt sie einen Begriff des Fortschritts, der eurozentrische Verzerrungen ebenso vermeidet wie die Vorstellung einer zwangsläufigen Entwicklungstendenz.     Abstract: "In Elementary Aspects of the Political Prathama Banerjee moves beyond postcolonial and decolonial critiques of European political philosophy to rethink modern conceptions of "the political" from the perspective of the Global South. Drawing on Indian and Bengali practices and philosophies from the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, Banerjee identifies four elements of the political: the self, action, ideas, and the people. She examines selfhood in light of precolonial Indic traditions of renunciation and realpolitik; action in the constitutive tension between traditional conceptions of karma and modern ideas of labor; the idea of equality as it emerges in the dialectic between spirituality and economics; and people in the friction between the structure of the political party and the atmospherics of fiction and theater. Throughout, Banerjee reasserts the historical specificity of political thought and challenges modern assumptions about the universality, primacy, and self-evidence of the political. In formulating a new theory of the political, Banerjee gestures toward a globally salient political philosophy that displaces prevailing Western notions of the political masquerading as universal"--

    Abstract: Demokratie gegen Demokratie - illiberale gegen liberale, direkte gegen repräsentative Demokratie, vielleicht sogar "the people vs. democracy"? Es scheint, die Demokratie war noch nie so unumstritten wie heute, während zugleich noch nie so umstritten war, was aus ihr folgt. Jeder tritt in ihrem Namen an und beschuldigt den Gegner, ein Gegner der Demokratie zu sein. Der Demokratie droht heute nur noch Gefahr von ihr selbst. Unsere Lage, so die These Philip Manows, ist von der gleichzeitigen Demokratisierung und Ent-Demokratisierung der Demokratie gekennzeichnet: Es ist die drastische Ausweitung von Partizipationschancen, die im Zentrum der Krise politischer Repräsentation steht. Diese Krise aber transformiert den Streit in der Demokratie zu einem Streit über die Demokratie - der ist jedoch demokratisch nicht zu führen. „Philip Manow bürstet eingewöhnte Perspektiven gegen den Strich. Die Erfolge populistischer Parteien seien keine „Krise der Demokratie“, schreibt der Bremer Politikwissenschaftler, sondern eine „Krise der Repräsentation“. Die Denationalisierung der Politik durch die EU sei der Auslöser dafür.     Abstract: Do elections turn people into democratic citizens? Elections have long been seen as a way to foster democracy, development and security in Africa, with many hoping that the secret ballot would transform states. Adopting a new approach that focusses on the moral economy of elections, Nic Cheeseman, Gabrielle Lynch and Justin Willis show how elections are shaped by competing visions of what it means to be a good leader, bureaucrat or citizen. Using a mixed-methods study of elections in Ghana, Kenya and Uganda, they explore moral claims made by officials, politicians, civil society, international observers and voters themselves. This radical new lens reveals that elections are the site of intense moral contestation, which helps to explain why there is such vigourous participation in processes that often seem flawed. Demonstrating the impact of these debates on six decades of electoral practice, they explain why the behaviour of those involved so frequently transgresses national law and international norms, as well as the ways in which such transgressions are evaluated and critiqued – so that despite the purported significance of 'vote-buying', the candidates that spend the most do not always win.

    Abstract: Volume One of Three Revolutions presents the overall research and discussions on topics related to the revolutionary events that have unfolded in Ukraine since 1990. The three revolutions referred to in this project include: the Revolution on Granite (1990); the Orange Revolution (2004-2005); and the Euromaidan Revolution (2013-2014). The project’s overall goal was to determine the extent to which we have the right to use the term “revolution” in relation to these events. Moreover, the research also uncovered the methodological problems associated with this task. Lastly, the project investigated to what extent the three revolutions are connected to each other and to what extent they are detached. Hence, the research in this volume not only discusses the theoretical aspects but also provides new analyses on such issues as religion, memory, and identity in Ukraine.

    Abstract: Das Erstarken rechtspopulistischer Bewegungen führt zu einer Normverschiebung in europäischen Gesellschaften und erzeugt Spannungen, die sich in Polarisierung widerspiegeln. Es geht dabei weniger um Migration selbst als um die Prozesse, die stattfinden, wenn Migrant*innen und ihre Nachkommen ihre Rechte einfordern. Die Frage des Umgangs mit Migration wird so zur Chiffre für Anerkennung von Gleichheit in demokratischen Gesellschaften. Naika Foroutan zeigt, dass die Migrationsfrage zur neuen sozialen Frage geworden ist – an ihr werden Verteilungsgerechtigkeit und kulturelle Selbstbeschreibung ebenso wie die demokratische Verfasstheit verhandelt. »Wie hältst Du es mit der Migration?« steht für die Frage danach, was ausgehandelt werden muss, damit die plurale Demokratie zusammenhält. Die postmigrantische Gesellschaft ist also eine, die sich im Kontext der Debatten um den Stellenwert von Migration neu ordnet. // Quelle: Klappentext.

    Abstract: For the last three decades, Uganda has been one of the fastest growing economies in Africa. Globally praised as an 'African success story' and heavily backed by international financial institutions, development agencies and bilateral donors, the country has become an exemplar of economic and political reform for those who espouse a neoliberal model of development. The neoliberal policies and the resulting restructuring of the country have been accompanied by narratives of progress, prosperity, and modernisation and justified in the name of development. But this self-celebratory narrative, which is critiqued by many in Uganda, masks the disruptive social impact of these reforms and silences the complex and persistent crises resulting from neoliberal transformations. Bringing together a range of leading scholars on the country, this collection represents a timely contribution to the debate around the 'New Uganda', one which confronts the often sanitized and largely depoliticized accounts of the Museveni government and its proponents. Harnessing a wealth of empirical materials, the contributors offer a critical, multi-disciplinary analysis of the unprecedented political, socio-economic, cultural and ecological transformations brought about by neoliberal capitalist restructuring since the 1980s. The result is the most comprehensive collective study to date of a neoliberal market society in contemporary Africa, offering crucial insights for other countries in the global South

    Abstract: From the upheavals of recent national elections to the success of the #MyDressMyChoice feminist movement, digital platforms have already had a dramatic impact on political life in Kenya - one of the most electronically advanced countries in sub-Saharan Africa. While the impact of the Digital Age on Western politics has been extensively debated, there is still little appreciation of how it has been felt in developing countries such as Kenya, where Twitter, Facebook, WhatsApp and other online platforms are increasingly a part of everyday life. Written by a respected Kenyan activist and researcher at the forefront of political online struggles, this book presents a unique contribution to the debate on digital democracy. For traditionally marginalised groups, particularly women and the disabled, digital spaces have allowed Kenyans to build new communities which transcend old ethnic and gender divisions. But the picture is far from wholly positive. Digital Democracy, Analogue Politics explores the drastic efforts being made by elites to contain online activism, as well as how `fake news', a failed digital vote-counting system and the incumbent president's recruitment of Cambridge Analytica contributed to tensions around the 2017 elections. Reframing digital democracy from the African perspective, Nyabola's ground-breaking work opens up new ways of understanding our current global online era.

    Abstract: Moderne Gesellschaften stehen seit je vor der Herausforderung, das Zusammenleben unterschiedlicher Konfessionen, Ethnien usw. zu ermöglichen. Leitbilder wie das der multikulturellen Gesellschaft gerieten dabei jüngst in die Kritik. Zu Recht, so Carlo Strenger, habe der Westen mit der Idee der Political Correctness doch ein "Eigentor" geschossen, da er nun selbst zum Ziel von Intoleranz werde
    Abstract: Dieser kluge Essay hat einen irritierenden Titel, der schon mitten ins Thema führt. Verachtung ist in Zeiten der "political correctness" keine ohne Weiteres vertretbare Haltung mehr. Der israelische Psychologe, der sich seit Jahren mit der Motivlage islamistischer Terroristen beschäftigt, streitet vehement für die Werte der europäischen Aufklärung. Nichts und niemand darf von fundierter Kritik mit nachvollziehbaren, wissenschaftlichen und vernunftmäßig begründbaren Argumenten ausgenommen werden. "Zivilisiert" ist diese "Verachtung" deshalb, weil sie nicht auf Menschen(-gruppen) und ihr Recht auf Meinungsäußerung zielt, sondern gegen deren Meinungen und Werthaltungen. Den linksliberalen Autor treibt die Angst um, dass durch die ängstliche Zurückhaltung fortschrittlicher Intellektueller bei der Verteidigung westlicher Freiheitswerte reaktionären, populistischen und rechtsradikalen Kräften der Weg bereitet wird. Deren Verachtung ist nun nicht "zivilisiert", sondern fremdenfeindlich, dehumanisierend und oft gewalttätig. Ein wichtiger Diskussionsbeitrag, der breit angeboten werden sollte! (2 S) (Jochen Dudeck)
